Excerpt from this story from The Guardian:
Governments risk another decade of failure on biodiversity loss, due to the slow implementation of an international agreement to halt the destruction of Earth’s ecosystems, experts have warned.
Less than two years ago, the world reached a historic agreement at the Cop15 summit in Montreal to stop the human-caused destruction of life on our planet. The deal included targets to protect 30% of the planet for nature by the end of the decade (30x30), reform $500bn (then £410bn) of environmentally damaging subsidies, and begin restoring 30% of the planet’s degraded ecosystems.
But as country representatives dig into their second week of negotiations at Cop16 in Cali, Colombia – their first meeting since Montreal – alarm is growing at the lack of concrete progress on any of the major targets they agreed upon. An increasing number of indicators show that governments are not on track. They still need to protect an area of land equivalent to the combined size of Brazil and Australia, and an expanse of sea larger than the Indian Ocean to meet the headline 30x30 target, according to a new UN report.
Weak progress on funding for nature and almost no progress on subsidy reform have also frustrated observers. At the time of publication, 158 countries are yet to submit formal plans on how they are going to meet the targets, according to Carbon Brief, missing their deadline this month ahead of the biodiversity summit in Cali, where governments are not likely to set a new deadline.
The world has never met a target to stem the destruction of wildlife and life-sustaining ecosystems. Amid growing scientific warnings about the state of life on Earth, there has been a major push to make sure this decade is different, and that governments comply with targets designed to prevent wildlife extinctions, such as cuts to pesticides use and pollution.
Leading figures in conservation and science have raised concerns about the progress governments are making towards the targets in Cali. Martin Harper, CEO of Birdlife International, said meaningful action on commitments was vital.
“We cannot accept inaction as the new normal. This means more action to bolster efforts to recover threatened species, to protect and restore more land, fresh water and sea, and to transform our food, energy and industrial systems. We have five years to raise hundreds of billions of dollars. If we don’t see it materialise, I dread to think where we will be in 2030,” he said

MESSAGE IN ENGLISH / MENSAJE EN INGLÉS
As a Venezuelan, I feel obliged to write a message on all my platforms, even if they are not the biggest, it is a commitment I have with my country and the people I love the most in life.
Nicolás Maduro and his string of criminals have rigged the results of the presidential elections held on Sunday, July 28, 2024, proclaiming himself president of the republic.
Venezuela has been suffering under the Chavista regime for 25 years, people are already fed up, tired and desperate. People no longer want to die of hunger, they do not want to suffer in hospitals for lack of medicines and resources, people do not want to leave Venezuela for reasons of their future, PEOPLE WANT TO LIVE, LIVE IN PEACE AND FREEDOM. And this is impossible under the Chavista dictatorship, of which Nicolás Maduro is in charge.
For this reason, people voted for Edmundo González Urrutia, the people made the candidate Edmundo González victorious, but the socialist party of the Chavistas manipulate everything at their convenience and now people are dying in the streets, fighting for their rights.
There are dead, arrested, injured and missing in all cities of the country, including minors. These people are taken to a place called "El Helicoide", the largest torture centre in all of Latin America (courtesy of the Chavistas, since the main project was for this to be a huge shopping centre). Here they undergo the worst tortures (sleep deprivation, suffocation by putting their heads in plastic bags with pesticides, among many other things), and if these people are lucky, they die and do not suffer anymore.
They also make these prisoners make videos telling people not to go out on the streets, these prisoners are obviously coerced, threatened and with the promise that they will leave them free with no repercussions for themselves or their families.
Just on July 29, a MINOR (15) was killed by a shot in the neck.
And for the people who support Palestine (as it should be) DO NOT FALL INTO THE WORDS OF NICOLÁS MADURO. That man is NOT pro-Palestine, he is only anti-United States.
That talk of "Long live free Palestine" in front of the cameras is pure story, do you really believe it? When not even his own country is free?
VENEZUELA IS A DICTATORSHIP, THERE IS NO ANY KIND OF DEMOCRACY.
In an upcoming post I will collect links so that they can donate for funeral expenses, donations to buy medical products for the injured (saline solutions, gauze, medicines, gloves, etc...) and, if you can't donate, please SPEAK

do you think that Spinner is still in contact with his family or that they can came to visit him in the hospital? if not, Deku is probably the first and only person to visit him. how sad would that be. Deku basically killed his boyfriend and his is the first face Spinner sees weeks after the war ended that doesn't belong to hospital staff.
My first thought is that I hope Spinner's family is still alive, after he was first revealed as a Villain after Kamino. Toga's parents got vilified and their house got vandalized after she committed her first stabbing. The countryside has no qualms about attacking heteromorphs for basically no reason. Spinner got tormented and sprayed with pesticides as a child for walking outside. When the Iguchi family becomes not just the local heteromorph family, but the heteromorph family who raised a terrorist and a Villain, I have to wonder the villagers even let the family flee the village unharmed.
I hope they are alive, and they haven't disowned him, and they are willing to take Spinner back. He's got nothing else left.
If not. Yeah. Deku, the guy who killed his friend, being one of the few people who shows up? Devastating. THE BOY WHO KILLED HIS FRIEND. GOD.
I'm half prepared for Shouji to have also visited Spinner, because Shouji isn't a character so much as a Cool vehicle for the message of "How To Respond To Violent Discrimination The Right Way," so of course he'll nobly visit Spinner.
#thanks for the ask!#sorry the manga is so depressing#nalslastworkingbraincell#spoilers#bnha spoilers

Chapter 2: Storm before the Blushing Morn
Dan Feng x Fem!Reader
WARNINGS/ TAGS: The reader has a default name, OOC, mentioned of blood. (This is a work of fanfiction, events are not aligned or relevant to the original work)
Word count: ~2k
Summary: He met you on a drizzling day when hydrangea fully bloomed on its field. Amidst the sea of mild pastel petals, Dan Feng never thought the flowery domain that intertwined your fate was the precise thing withered with you. They said he was a dragon, a hero, a sinner, but never a person with love, hatred, sorrow, or joy like everyone else in this world. However, it was a demi-truth. He committed the cardinal sin because of you.
Note: Do you like...pain?
He revisited on a sprinkle day, his signature ambergris aroma mixed with the freshness of humid forest note. You did not know why, but the High Elder seemed to be into rainy days because every time he came, water definitely showered outside. It has been weeks since you met him for the first time, and thanks to the frequency of his visits, you learn that the nonchalant Imbibitor Lunae gradually displays the other side. Although Dan Feng never clearly shows his emotion, you can tell his mood through the draconic tail. When he feels happy, his tail swings side to side and stands still as its owner is interested in or concentrates on whatever your information. In addition to your surprise, he sometimes even punchlines on your venting stories.
Under the Mulan's foliage, you slowly gaze at the kaleidoscope sky after rain. A mid-summer breeze that carries the scent of white flowers softly blows through, driving the ripples to gleam on the water's surface.
Immersing in your haze, you forget what was going to do until the Long Scion gives out his curiousness about the bush of Datura Metel in a corner garden.
"I have studied an organic pesticide which extracts from their active agents." - The elegant smell of lotus still glistens in the morning dew perfumes in your lungs when nudging into them. Suddenly, you shove the flower cart into his arms and tell him to wait for you at a nearby wooden bench. Dan Feng thinks eternal Spring never leaves this sunlit Shangri-La as he wipes the Mulan's petals out of the seat because the flora seems to blossom in four seasons.
While idly watching Koi fish under silky leafages, the High Elder does not notice you snicker behind. A forgotten raindrop stagnates on the lotus leaf trail like a lost pearl, arousing the quiet pond like his emerald orbs rising in astonishment. Amid the multi-colored palette, Dan Feng finds your smile is the most gorgeous flower when you abruptly pop up with a posy of Emperical Peony. The beam you flashed him still lingering in his mind as Dan Feng reluctantly takes the gift. Your hands lightly brush together via the exchange, reminding him of the existence of those black gloves since he has not seen you take them off once. Nevertheless, he lets it pass and dances his slender finger around the ombre corolla instead.
"Thank you, Yi Ting." - Imbibitor Lunae softly mutters under his breath, and as the lost ray shines through frost winter, a faint smile stretches on his usually glacial face.
On that day in the summer season, Dan Feng realizes that he does not return to your place because of its spectacular. He wants to revisit the Shangri-La because he likes spending time with you.
On an Autumn afternoon painted in a burnt orange hue and wafting with a ripe persimmon scent, you are leisurely proceeding to the Dan Feng's residence while absentmindedly grazing a bunch of white chrysanthemums in hand. Looking at the High Elder Statue at the Dragonvista Rain Hall, your mind winds up reminiscing about the previous conversation.
"Yes?" - Transfering your focus toward his position, you represented the confusion as if hearing him wrong. The quiet Long Scion might befriend you and be your custom guest, but it was an extraordinary phenomenon since Dan Feng has not asked you to deliver flowers to his estate before. He patiently repeated the order while reading his scroll in one hand, and the other halfway was lifting the teacup with expressionless features. Looking at his relaxing manner, you unknowingly realize this house became Imbibitor Lunae's office.
When immersing thought in the past, you are suddenly pulled back to the present by a low thud of a light collision with a follow-up painful cry. Tears are bubbling in the Vidyadhara child's doe eyes as she feels the pain. You swiftly support her to stand up and inspect the body while trying to comfort the child, which results in two news in this situation. A good one is a scratch, and the bad is her cry getting louder even though you used up all your tricks.
"Pain, Pain goes away!" - You singsong to conjure an apple lollipop appearing in hand, and tears stop falling as she eyes your apologetic smile with compensation. When you clean the last drop of trail wet on her chubby cheekbones and apologize with head patting, other Vidyadhara children circle you to admire the little show. A defeated sigh escapes your breath as you look at their twinkle glims and secretly count the remaining candy's quantity. Unfortunately, in addition to your trouble, with an invitation from a brunette-haired boy, the group of children tugs your sleeves to play blind man's buff with their puppy eyes.
"Alright, but I won't be lenient." - You confidently state when settling the bouquet on a stone bench. And you keep your line.
Once darkness invades the vision, you start to track down the children. By listening to their footsteps and sensing the airflow, you catch all of them except Ma Tian, the boy with sheen eyes who cleverly outclasses your skill. Finally, thanks to your florist's exceptional technique, you discreetly declare the endgame while detecting his fabric detergent in the wind's stream.
"Catch ya, little brat!" - You happily exclaim your victory when circling your arms around Ma Tian's figure. However, you immediately realize something is wrong as a familiar ambergris cologne lingers on your nose, and you are hugging a lean body. Hurriedly removing the blindfold, you see Dan Feng mimic your shocked expression while Ma Tian lolls out his head behind the Long Scion.
"How long do you intend to embrace me?" - The High Elder clears his throat with a light reprimand nuance laces in but does not seem annoyed. If there is anything you would admire about Imbibitor Lunae besides his glorious feats, the quick recovery from an embarrassing situation is one of them. As soon as you two detach, Dan Feng grabs the bouquet and leads you out of the Scalegorge Waterscape, leaving the cheerful goodbyes of those children behind. You do not understand why Dan Feng is rushing in his strides until you see a pink tint on his tip ears.
When the sunset light turns golden on the greenery beneath, which gets everything basked in the look of burnished copper, you two arrive at the military memorial area where illustrious warriors rest in peace. Passing through hundreds of black marble graves glides their name, Dan Feng unravels your holding hands as he crunches down to place the chrysanthemum bouquet in front of a stone-carved Bai Heng.
You know that name. She was once a High-Cloud quintet member and a gifted pilot who sacrificed in the third Denizen of Abundance. People say Imbibitor Lunae is never a person with love, hatred, sorrow, or joy like everyone else in this world, but now you can shout out they are all wrong because of the unfathomable somber besieges in his orbs.
"Life is so short when it comes to mortal organisms'' - He mouths in a calm and unwavering tone after a long silence - "No matter what you do, they definitely die." With his back turned to you, it is challenging to figure out its meaning, yet you can degust a longing taste entangled in that clause. Forgotten fragments of sunlight slowly die on your heels while trekking to the way out, and the crescent vaguely takes place in the saturated navy sky. Although the High Elder rarely shared his thoughts with someone else, you hardly agree with this viewpoint.
"Even if it is short-lived, even if fate sometimes turns tragic, limited longevity creates the beauty of lives and valuableness because we learn to cherish life, and not all farewells are regretful. Sometimes, death is also an extrication, and I believe we will rendezvous on another horizon."
Dan Feng follows your graze to the glitter crepuscule, causing the mellow ray to cradle his features. - "Someday, you also turn into ashes?" - A sliver of bitterness in the question soon morphed into those cyan irises as you confirmed with your bright smile. When the two of you pass through the gate, Imbibitor Lunae abruptly informs you of his next arrival with special requests that combine with osmanthus cake and jasmine tea. It is the first time he proactively reserves in advance because Dan Feng neither notices his attendance nor does he appear on sunny days.
"Do I have to wait for the rain to meet you?" - Only one sentence, it has changed your relationship ever since. You guess that might be the way he expresses his feelings.
In a dream, I see myself in my childhood state with a bouquet of blue hydrangeas. Strolling by the seashore, the shells confound in golden sand rustles underneath my bare feet as I search for someone. End then, an abnormal bloodred butterfly hovers around to lead me toward that person; we have passed zillions of landscapes and territories, from glacial rivers where white snow permanently coats mounts to the vast rug crafted by countless vivid blossoms. From the nameless barren deserts with magnificent starry nights crown aloft to the rich prairie possesses coast breezes. I keep going, going.
"Hydrangeas is the soulmate of rains." A distant voice echoes from those feeble wings in the entire journey. It feels like Amber Periods have flown until we reach a field with full-bloom hydrangeas that unfold our presence. Suddenly, my companion disappears into thin air, and I notice a nostalgic glimpse waving his hand from afar as if he has been waiting for me for an astronomical long time.
"You got my wish fulfilled... Thank you, my comrade." - The boy says in a gentle demeanor. His blue eyes shine brighter than any stars I have ever known, and he also disappears like the bloodred butterfly. His silhouette dissipates into thousands of flower petals as he flashes a warm smile toward me.
"Wait, H...H..." - A tsunami of impuissant waves brews into my heart when I try to call his name, but none of the syllables come out, and tears continuously cascade from my eyes while I witness the lost world fading.
You wake up from a soothing noise of hot steam oozing out of your old kettle and forget the dream cleanly. "You had a fever." - A low tone voice diagnoses as soon as Dan Feng senses your consciousness. Slightly lifting the heavy eyelids, you see him situating beside your headboard with a botanical book in hand. The glorious sun is far high hanging in the sky to pour its honeyed light through your window, which informs you to oversleep impliedly. You do not notice tears rolling down until the Long Scion points out in skimming your complexion and uses his thumb to caress the trail wetness. Sensing no engagement in conversation, Dan Feng shifts his hand to cover your eyesight and tenderly leans forward.
You only feel a pillowy touch on your forehead afterward.
"Please do not leave the bed today, and take the medicine on time because this is a prescription from the High Elder." - He faux-orders when rendering your vision. Astoundedly grazing the lingering sensation, you did not know that Imbibitor Lunae has a bizarre way of assessing the temperature.
Winter at Shangri-La never experiences snow, yet it takes some seasonal features such as the gloomy weather all day with northeast wind seething through every direction. Inspecting the murky clouded skyward, you tug the scarf closer when your breaths dimly turn into silver smoke. As soon as you attempt to lift the white lily cart, a hot stream of fluid smelling like rusty iron runs down your chin, which the soil absorbs its falling drops. When you bring your hand to clean the water, it takes a moment to process it is blood. Your irises squeeze as you dumbfoundedly stare at the ivory gloves tainted with the crimson hue. Just as you intend to step forward, the surrounding spins around as though Earth and Heaven are twitching position, and you kneel only to cough out blood that permeates the fabric. The pollen sparkles in the ether after the collapse, and the shivering lily's petals in chilly winds are the last things in your blurring vision.

*ISRAEL REALTIME* - "Connecting the World to Israel in Realtime"
❗️SUICIDE DRONE FROM IRAQ… at the Golan Heights, fired by an Iraqi based Iranian Shia Militia. “Exposives-laden” drone crashed and was located by IDF troops.
❗️3 SUICIDE DRONES from LEBANON… fell in open areas of Mt. Dov.
▪️LEBANON… Hezbollah announces it fired 30 Katyusha rockets at Kiryat Shmona. Hezbollah launched about 150 rockets, PGMs and anti-tank missiles at IDF positions and towns in the north of the country yesterday.
▪️MORE WAR POLITICS… the argument grows. Says Min. of National Security MK Ben Gvir: “My disagreement with (National Unity leader) MK Benny Gantz is much deeper than the extension of the term of office of the Prison Commissioner.
The same commissioner who conducted negotiations with Hamas to whom I told her that my policy was the opposite. Who gave positive terms to Kotier, a prisoner from a crime family, and I forbade her and told her that it was terrible, who hid entire events from me, as was the case in Ramonim prison when she told me that there were tensions in the wing and in the end it turned out that they tried to murder a warden.
My dispute with MK Gantz is over the fact that he is in favor of fueling Hamas and I oppose this, he is in favor of giving humanitarian aid without any conditions, and I say humanitarian for humanitarian.”
(Amit Segal) Gantz withdrew from the compromise he agreed to today after the cabinet meeting. Part of the plan is to come up with excuses even though the war will last for many months per the chief of staff last night and despite Gantz’s commitment to stay until the end of the war. The next excuse will be the 2024 budget. It's all a show to escape from committing to stay until the end of the war.
▪️JUDICIAL REAONSABLE-NESS DECISION LEAKS… this would be an earthquake if not for the war. High Court overturns the Knesset Basic Law: Judicial Reasonableness:
(1) It’s unreasonable for the Knesset to require the court to control their reasonableness unless by broad agreement, not a narrow coalition.
(2) An exemption is given for the full high court only, and by not making the reasonableness a blanket standard by giving the high court full panel more flexibility, it became unreasonable.
(3) Two of the judges in the decision are past their required retirement date, without them it would be a 7-6 decision allowing, with them it is an 8-7 decision overturning.
To summarize: Former High Court Lead Judge Hayut is going to cancel a basic law on the pretext that it was accepted "by a narrow majority”.
The court says: The writing of the judgment has not yet been completed. We take unauthorized leaks very seriously and will not address it. The judgment will be published after its writing is completed.
▪️ARAB WORKERS TRY TO POISON CHILDREN? Central district police officers detained 3 gardening workers in a city for questioning, on suspicion of spraying pesticide on playground equipment in the park (with the intent to poison the children).
▪️RELATED: ARAB WORKERS AUTHORIZED? Sahar Saad, chairman of the Palestinian Workers Association: "Israel has issued ten thousand work permits to Palestinians in the field of construction. These permits are limited by time of day for the work - from five in the morning to five in the evening. They allow the entry of workers from Judea-Samaria in Israeli territory. They will come into effect on Jan. 6, 2024. The Israeli contractor ordering the work will guarantee the pick up of the workers from the checkpoint.

burgeon employing 'natural insect hunters' which essentially means animals like bluebirds, as well as owls + frogs to control the amount of pests in his garden (which is honestly a HUGE place and has a spiral staircase + this is where you will find it most of the time) because he refuses to use pesticides is honestly... kind of iconic of him when you don't think about all of the atrocities it has committed JSJSJ i mean, because there have been studies done to show that they negatively affect other thing's besides insects themselves, such as the soil of the plants you are putting it on itself and non-target plants along with other creatures.
so you better bet that blamore has some thing's inside his garden that attracts these animals and he treats them kindly. and now that i've mentioned it, i suppose his appreciation for nature is one of the better qualities that blamore possesses — though i think it's bitterness towards humanity in general has still very much left him feeling lonely, and just having the occasional animal as company is not sustainable for it. which i think is part of why blamore has forged a bond with nico morselli because he is one of the few people who he can trust will not cringe at the sight of it / think less of it because he is vastly different from the person he used to be.
#IT WAS PROBABLY NOTHING BUT IT FELT LIKE THE WORLD: musings.#ALL DARK ALL BLOODY MY HEART: character study.#so yeah... needless to say if he catches anyone who he has not explicity invited over to his greenhouse than it will be more than a LITTLE-#peeved. man's will be liable to at least kick them out on their face in fact because this is HIS sanctuary and it's not meant for anyone-#else + burgeon is so resentful towards humanity that he fears if it were to invite another person into it's life that it would ruin-#everything he's 'built' so-to-speak because it took him quite some time to at least become somewhat comfy with who he is now and the only-#people he loved (aka his father and erich) were killed and didn't approve of his plan to sort of 'wipe the slate clean' in erich's case so-#he's got a LOT of complex hatred towards humanity that was made through perceived betrayals and as well as very real ones.#not to say that i'm condoning him wanting to torch gotham to the ground ofc bc that is HORRIBLE but i'm just trying to explain why he is-#the way he is now.#and honestly... i didn't include thérèse or his mother in the list of people he has ever loved because although he DESIRED for her-#to love him the unfortunate fact of the matter is that she basically did not want him and treated him like trash all throughout the time-#he spent with her even though every kid deserves good parents. however not every parent deserves kids

463 spoilers and theories
Ok this is a little late, I’ve been busy with sorting out my student loans and then I was struggling to find the previous chapters I needed for this post. But it’s here
Vinjin’s baby sister
My first thought when I saw this was “he SAed her” because of the state of her uniform, then I thought maybe he just bullied her to the point of su*cide.
IF that fake blonde fuck didn’t SA her I have a theory for Vins sister’s death.
I don’t remember that chapter but we know that both vin and Mary are from a small town or village and we also know that vin was called a monster due to his condition. It could be that the village (I think it’s a village and I’ll get to it why) they lived in was extremely superstitious and gave vin a hard time due to his eyes. I also thought that maybe his sister might’ve been forced into some weird ass ritual because in the image above there are talismans around her. I also did a quick 5 minute search and found that the bells beside her body are called “Mudang” and they’re used in shaman rituals. Also the tree behind her has several stripes tight around it in different colours. According to my research, that is a scared tree which is usually outside of villages, at the entrances to be exact, and they’re called “scared or spirit trees” and are meant to be shrines for village guardian spirits. These shrines are locations for rituals of protection, good harvest and prosperity. These trees usually have a rope tied around them with stripes of mulberry paper, white cloth or 5 coloured cloth. Just like the one in the picture.
I know this theory is a stretch but the tree and talismans really had me questioning a lot of things.
HOWEVER, if this isn’t the case then I would like to add onto the SA theory because I noticed a couple of things in the previous chapters.
Let’s start off with how vin and Mary’s old mates love her but hate him. I always found that odd because of they hate vin for supposedly killing one of their own then why not hate Mary too, instead all we see is admiration and guilt (from Mc pesticides).
Obviously there’s some kind of misunderstanding because one, both Mary and vin were shocked to learn Taejin is alive and two, the other members seemed to be upset about his “death”.
Did Mary also almost get SA or bullied by Taejin? Did McPesticides know? Why is is he guilty? This would prove the bullying theory I have of Taejin bullying vins sister, maybe he also bullied Mary except Mary didn’t try to commit su*cide? We also know that once you get labeled as a murderer things become extremely difficult both in terms of mental trauma and economically, obviously taking a human life can be mentally taxing for many people and finding jobs with the label of a murderer is also hard; there were theories that maybe that’s why vin decided to become a rapper and Mary followed him because she’s all he had left and he apparently killed for her sake. It’s been stated that vin’s old crew helped him run away and as a result they too received backlash
In this theory I believe that vin and Mary were the only ones who knew of Taejin’s true nature. And obviously Vin is technically not a murderer because Taejin’s nasty ass is still alive.
Either of these theories could be true or both, maybe Taejon did SA vins sister but he did in front of the sacred tree to maybe mock her that the guardian spirit wasn’t protecting her? Honestly the 2nd theory would also explain why Taejin is in workers, he was probably on the run and had nowhere to go, or he got captured by the workers.
Knowing ptj there a high chance it is SA.
I’ll probably come back to edit this post if I remember something else. ✌🏼

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
December 27, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
DEC 28, 2023
Fifty years ago tomorrow, on December 28, 1973, President Richard Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act into law. Declaring that Congress had determined that “various species of fish, wildlife, and plants in the United States have been rendered extinct as a consequence of economic growth and development untempered by adequate concern and conservation,” the act provided for the protection of endangered species.
Just over a decade before, in 1962, ecologist Rachel Carson had published Silent Spring, documenting how pesticides designed to eliminate insects were devastating entire ecosystems of linked organisms. The realization that human destruction of the natural world could make the planet uninhabitable spurred Congress in 1970 to create the Environmental Protection Agency. And in 1973, when Nixon called for stronger laws to protect species in danger of extinction, 194 Democrats and 160 Republicans in the House—99% of those voting—voted yes. Only four Republicans in the House voted no.
Such strong congressional support for protecting the environment signaled that a new era was at hand. While President Gerald Ford, who succeeded Nixon, tended to dial back environmental protections when he could in order to promote the development of oil and gas resources, President Jimmy Carter pressed the protection of the environment when he took office in 1977.
In 1978, Carter placed 56 million acres of land in Alaska under federal protection as national monuments, doubling the size of the national park system. “These areas contain resources of unequaled scientific, historic and cultural value, and include some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife in the world,” he said. In 1979 he had 32 solar panels installed at the White House to help heat the water for the building and demonstrate that it was possible to curb U.S. dependence on fossil fuels. Just before he left office, Carter signed into law the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, protecting more than 100 million acres in Alaska, including additional protections for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Oil companies, mining companies, timber companies, the cattle industry, and local officials eager for development strongly opposed Carter’s moves to protect the environment. In Alaska, local activists deliberately broke the regulations in the newly protected places, portraying Carter as King George III—against whom the American colonists revolted in 1776—and insisting that the protection of lands violated the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness promised in the Declaration of Independence.
For the most part, though, opposition to federal protection of the environment showed up as a drive to reform government regulations that, opponents argued, gave far too much power to unelected bureaucrats. In environmental regulations, the federal government’s protection of the public good ran smack into economic development.
In their 1980 presidential platform, Republicans claimed to be committed to “the conservation and wise management of America’s renewable natural resources” and said the government must protect public health. But they were not convinced that current laws and regulations provided benefits that justified their costs. “Too often,” they said, “current regulations are…rigid and narrow,” and they “strongly affirm[ed] that environmental protection must not become a cover for a ‘no-growth’ policy and a shrinking economy.”
In his acceptance speech for the Republican presidential nomination, Ronald Reagan explained that he wanted to see the U.S. produce more energy to fuel “growth and productivity. Large amounts of oil and natural gas lay beneath our land and off our shores, untouched because the present Administration seems to believe the American people would rather see more regulation, taxes and controls than more energy.”
In his farewell address after voters elected Reagan, Carter urged Americans to “protect the quality of this world within which we live…. There are real and growing dangers to our simple and our most precious possessions: the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land which sustains us,” he warned. “The rapid depletion of irreplaceable minerals, the erosion of topsoil, the destruction of beauty, the blight of pollution, the demands of increasing billions of people, all combine to create problems which are easy to observe and predict, but difficult to resolve. If we do not act, the world of the year 2000 will be much less able to sustain life than it is now.”
“But,” Carter added, “[a]cknowledging the physical realities of our planet does not mean a dismal future of endless sacrifice. In fact, acknowledging these realities is the first step in dealing with them. We can meet the resource problems of the world—water, food, minerals, farmlands, forests, overpopulation, pollution if we tackle them with courage and foresight.”
Reagan began by appointing pro-industry officials James G. Watt and Anne M. Gorsuch (mother of Supreme Court justice Neil Gorsuch) as secretary of the interior and administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, respectively; they set out to gut government regulation of the environment by slashing budgets and firing staff. But both resigned under scandal in 1983, and their replacements satisfied neither those who wanted to return to the practices of the Carter years nor those who wanted to get rid of those practices altogether.
Still, with their focus on developing oil and gas, when workers repairing the White House roof removed the solar panels in 1986, Reagan administration officials declined to reinstall them.
Forty years later, we are reaping the fruits of that shift away from the atmosphere that gave us the Endangered Species Act and toward a focus on developing fossil fuels. On November 30 the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), an agency of the United Nations, reported that global temperatures in 2023 were at record highs both on land and in the seas, Antarctic sea ice extent is at a record low, and devastating fires, floods, outbreaks of disease, and searing heat waves have pounded human communities this year.
The WMO released this provisional report the same day that the U.N. Climate Change negotiations, known as COP28, began in the United Arab Emirates. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged leaders to commit to act to address climate change, while there was still time to avoid “the worst of climate chaos.” After a year in which countries staggered under extreme weather events, climate change is on people’s minds: nearly 80,000 people, including world leaders and celebrities, registered to attend COP28.
After the convention ended on December 13, Umair Irfan of Vox summarized the agreement hashed out there. For the first time in 27 such conventions, countries explicitly called for the phasing out of fossil fuel…but they didn’t say when or by how much. After taking stock of what countries are doing to address climate change, the meeting concluded that efforts to reduce emissions, invest in technology, adapt to warming, and help suffering countries are all falling short.
In addition to acknowledging the need to move away from fossil fuels, COP28 agreed to cut methane, boost renewable energy considerably, and help countries that are dealing with the fallout from climate change: island nations, for example. But emissions of greenhouse gases continue to rise, and the hope of limiting warmer temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius now seems a long shot. Still, renewable energy capacity grew nearly 10% in 2022, led by solar and wind power.
Today President Joe Biden used the anniversary of the Endangered Species Act to reclaim the spirit of the era in which it was written, urging Americans to protect ecosystems and biodiversity, “honor all the progress we have made toward protecting endangered species,” and to “come together to conserve our planet.” He noted that thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, the Biden-Harris administration has been able to invest billions of dollars in forest management, ecosystem restoration, and protection of watersheds, as well as making historic investments in addressing climate change, and that, as president, he has protected more lands and waters than any president since John F. Kennedy.
And yet the forces that undermined that spirit are still at work. In the 2022 West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency decision, the Supreme Court claimed that Congress could not delegate “major questions” to executive agencies, thus limiting the EPA’s ability to regulate the emissions that create climate change; and House Republicans this summer held a hearing on “the destructive cost of the Endangered Species Act,” claiming that it “has been misused and misapplied for the past 50 years” with “disastrous effects on local economies and businesses throughout the United States.” Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources Bruce Westerman (R-AR) accused the Biden administration of stifling “everything from forest management to future energy production through burdensome ESA regulations.”
While in 1980 voters could react to such a contrast between the parties’ environmental visions ideologically, in 2023, reality itself is weighing in. Brady Dennis of the Washington Post noted today that in this era of rising waters and epic storms, North Carolina has become the fourth state, along with South Carolina, New York, and New Jersey, to require home sellers to disclose their home’s flooding history and flood risk to prospective buyers.

Attal: Between Legacy, Leadership, and a Little Bit of Lutte
Meeting his fellow militants and sharing his visions after his destined secession of the Renaissance party, from his ex, might be amongst the few relaxing moments for Gabriel Attal. He has some busy days and priorities after (or during) the Remembrance Day public holiday, and they are no easy nuts to crack. No longer the Minister calling the shots, the leader of the EPR group has to navigate a fragmented National Assembly and seek to carve his own path within a government he doesn't entirely control. These public sources offer a glimpse into his strategic manoeuvring, a blend of assertive pronouncements, subtle jabs, and carefully cultivated alliances.
Education Reform: A "Choc" Dulled by Budget Cuts?
The education reform that Attal championed as Minister of Education, his ambitious "Choc des Savoirs," faces some budgetary headwinds. The grand vision of Act II has been somewhat dimmed by the realities of fiscal constraints. Anne Genetet, the new Minister, has opted for a more modest approach, particularly in expanding "groupes de besoins" in 4th and 3rd grades. While the core of Attal's reform remains - the "groupes de besoins," the early maths bac, the textbook labelling - the scope has been reduced, prompting criticism that the "choc" has lost some of its punch.
La Voix du Nord believes that Genetet is Attal's pick for protecting his legacy. Budget is a hot topping landing him and his predecessors into hot water. Attal finds himself in a delicate position. He can, of course, claim victory, asserting that Act II builds upon the solid foundations he laid. Attal, ever the strategist, takes a more nuanced approach. As he argues that budget cuts threaten the future of France's children, he also positions himself as the champion for greater investment in education It's a clever tactic, allowing him to distance himself from the less ambitious Act II while burnishing his credentials as a defender of education.
Mercosur: A "Non!" That Resonates Across France
The proposed EU-Mercosur trade deal is causing quite a stir in France. French farmers, always a potent political force, are up in arms, fearing a flood of cheap South American beef that would undercut their livelihoods. Environmental groups, concerned about deforestation and pesticide use in South America, are adding their voices to the chorus of dissent. And in a rare display of unity, the French parliament, both Senate and National Assembly, has expressed its overwhelming opposition to the deal.
As the first signatories, Attal emerges as a leading voice against the Mercosur Agreement. The joint declaration with other parliamentary leaders boasting a remarkable 622 signatures has urged the European Commission to reconsider the deal. He also adopts the mantle of "Guardian of Standards," arguing that the deal threatens French agriculture and environmental commitments. With France increasingly isolated in its opposition - countries like Germany and Spain see significant economic benefits from Mercosur- Attal is using this moment to position himself as a defender of French interests on the European stage, something he might be able to work with his ex, as the latter will be appointed as the EVP of trade and prosperity, and had promised to 'not sign' the treaty should it harms European interest.
National Assembly: A "Socle" Shaky and Full of Frictions
The National Assembly, that grand stage of French democracy, currently resembles a rather chaotic dance floor.... The current government, led by Michel Barnier, depends on a fragile "socle commun," a coalition of parties that includes Attal's EPR, the Republicans (LR), the Modem, and Horizons. But this "socle" is proving to be rather shaky, riddled with frictions and power plays....
Attal, leading the largest group within this coalition, is facing a delicate balancing act. He's acutely aware that the French public, weary of political instability, craves a semblance of unity and stability. He's also conscious of the need to assert his own influence and carve out a distinct identity for the EPR.
The recent pension compromise, orchestrated by Laurent Wauquiez, the leader of the LR group, has exposed the tensions within the "socle". While Attal publicly supports the government's efforts to find a compromise, frustration within the EPR ranks simmers as Attal's troops feel sidelined, outmanoeuvred, and somewhat "humiliated" by Wauquiez's deft handling of the pension issue.
Can Attal Juggle It All?
Attal's current challenge is reminiscent of a high-wire act, requiring delicate balance and strategic precision. He must appease the demands of a fragmented National Assembly, maintain his legacies, assert his own political vision, and carefully navigate the ambitions of his rivals, all while maintaining an image of unity and stability.
Will he stumble or soar? That remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Attal is a force to be reckoned with in French politics, and his journey will be captivating to watch. And see you next time.

so... i mentioned a dream i had last night about my spidersona and so i decided to take the motivation to draw and write out ideas. Ill put it all under the cut cause its a bit long and goofy.
First things first. Not in New york. This takes place in a city more akin to richmond. or some other southern city. Not too big, not too tall, and near enough to tobacco that that is something that is thought about.
second things second, gotta clear this from my chest. Bitten by a beetle. A Lasioderma serricorne, aka Tobacco Beetle. Agrioscorp was developing and presenting pesticides to use against such creatures. Martha, our tiny hero, was there for a school project about crops and bing boom. Beetle that the pesticide was supposed to murder actually didn't murder the beetle and it gave the magic bite of powers.
Name: Martha Anne Taylor
Hero name: The Dynamic Tobacco Beetle. or Baccy
Alignment: HAHAHHA she watched too much a-team, red dawn, and Smokey and the Bandit growing up. while respectful, she does not see the system as the end all be all and often tries to talk to her villains. Drags them to a good meal.
powers: Climbing walls, super strength, enhanced senses, immunity to certain toxins, can digest less nutritious food (like rotten food) with no problem, good at riding horses (not a power... .. .)
toolkit: rope shooters, ginger cinnamon molasses cookies to offer villains. Armor (the dark brown bits under her jacket)
weaknesses: Cold!! gets slower and slower as she gets colder. at 39.2 Fahrenheit (4 °C) she passes out. she learns to layer pretty fast. Homemade Biscuits and iced sweet tea. offer those and she'll be distracted enough for you to go commit crimes
age: 16ish.
backstory: Lives with her maternal grandpa after most of her family was killed. by hurricanes. :/ dang. Her grampa runs a horse carriage service within the city and she helps care for the horses in her downtime
foes: mostly based on tssm versions. because beloved. BUT we have some changes and some dynamic shake-ups and name changes because.
vulture-> to Falcon (Adrian Toomes): He is an old inventor whose work has been taken over and over and he is done. Osborn (like in tssm) took his design and this was the breaking point. Hes bent on revenge. and Baccy is bent on getting him to calm down and eat a Snickers. eek.
Tinkerer( Phineas Mason): Owns a technology repair store and has underground dealings in tech that the store acts as a front for. Quentin lives with him due to him owing Quentin's deceased parents a huge favor. Quentin used to live in new york city and had to move with tinkerer down south.
mysterio-> Mysterium (Quentin Mason nee Beck): Northern City Kid who feels pretty out of water. Goes to the same school as Martha. They end up as pals. but that's a complicated story.
Tombstone: similar to tssm. crime lord. of a relatively small city so its a bit easier. Also!! Baccy cant go in his office. He keeps it too cold. He has no idea that's the case. She leaves notes on his window to threaten him. Like cut out letter ransom notes. He leaves some in reply on occasion.
---
other people ive thought about:
Ella Osborn is the sickly daughter of Norman. She can do some things but tires easily. Very easily. Martha is a tutor for her, as she is mainly homeschooled. it gives her a chance to interact with other kids her age. Not by her parents though. There are people they can pay to do it instead.

Excerpt from this New York Times story:
As president, Donald Trump’s sweeping attempts to roll back federal environmental regulations were often stymied — by the courts, by a lack of experience, even by internal resistance from government employees.
But if he retakes the White House in November, Mr. Trump would be in a far better position to dismantle environmental and climate rules, aided by more sympathetic judges and conservative allies who are already mapping out ways to bend federal agencies to the president’s will.
“It’s going to be easier,” said Myron Ebell, who led the transition at the Environmental Protection Agency after Mr. Trump won in 2016. “They’re going to have better people, more committed people, more experienced people. They will be able to move more quickly, and more successfully, in my view.”
On the campaign trail, Mr. Trump has promised to repeal federal regulations designed to cut greenhouse gas pollution that is rapidly heating the planet. Many of his allies want to go further. They are drafting plans to slash budgets, oust career staffers, embed loyalists in key offices and scale back the government’s powers to tackle climate change, regulate industries and restrict hazardous chemicals.
Those plans, while wildly ambitious, may be more attainable next time around. Perhaps the biggest change in Mr. Trump’s favor is that over the past two years, the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority has significantly curbed the legal authority of the government to impose environmental rules on businesses.
At the same time, Mr. Trump has proposed reclassifying tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to fire them. He has said that move, which he tried to implement at the end of his first term, is necessary to “destroy the deep state” that he says secretly worked against his presidency. The result is that a second Trump administration might not face as many legal or bureaucratic guardrails as the first.
“Because of the Supreme Court in particular, he’ll be able to get away with a lot more than anyone ever suspected,” said Christine Todd Whitman, who led the Environmental Protection Agency under President George W. Bush. She said the courts have effectively given a second Trump administration a “free hand” to slash regulations.
That could mean a drastic transformation of the E.P.A., which was created by a Republican, Richard Nixon, and for five decades has played a powerful role in American society, from forcing communities to reduce smog to regulating the use of pesticides. Businesses and conservative groups have long said that excessive regulation drives up costs for industries from electric utilities to home building. Environmentalists say that handcuffing the E.P.A. now, when time is short to contain global warming, could have dire consequences.

The Vegan's Voyage: General Hux's Quest for Purity
(For @nisimelaudaslaudamme)
Summary: "The Vegan's Voyage: General Hux's Quest for Purity" follows General Hux, a vegan and germaphobe, as he seeks a solution for dwindling vegan food supplies aboard the Finalizer. His quest leads him to a partnership with the Lumarians of Rylis, ensuring fresh, uncontaminated produce for the crew. Hux's commitment to his principles inspires respect, while showcasing the importance of integrity in the midst of war.
General Hux stood tall on the bridge of the Finalizer, his starched uniform impeccable, his red hair slicked back with utmost precision. He exuded an aura of power and authority, commanding the respect of the officers under his command. However, beneath this facade of confidence, Hux carried two peculiar traits: he was a vegan and a germaphobe.
As the Finalizer traversed through space, Hux found himself facing a challenge that threatened to disrupt his carefully crafted lifestyle. The galactic supply lines were strained, and the quality of vegan food on board was dwindling. The crew had grown accustomed to the processed and tasteless rations, but for Hux, who valued nutrition and taste, it was an unacceptable compromise.
"Commander, report," Hux barked, his voice crisp and authoritative.
His subordinate approached with a respectful nod. "General Hux, our food supplies are running critically low. We've exhausted most of our vegan options, and the quality has diminished significantly."
Hux's brow furrowed, a rare sign of concern. "We cannot afford to compromise on our dietary principles, Commander. Find a solution, and find it quickly."
He saluted and hurried off, leaving Hux deep in thought. The general couldn't fathom the idea of consuming animal products or compromising his values. But as the days passed, the situation became dire. The vegan options on board had become practically nonexistent, leaving Hux with limited choices.
One evening, as Hux stood alone in his quarters, contemplating his predicament, an idea struck him. "What if," he murmured to himself, "I could find a solution that satisfies both my veganism and germaphobia?"
With newfound determination, Hux delved into extensive research, exploring alternative food sources that would meet his dietary needs. He scoured scientific databases, consulted agricultural experts, and studied reports on sustainable farming practices. In his quest for a solution, he stumbled upon a small, remote planet called Rylis, renowned for its pristine and uncontaminated environment.
The planet's native species, the Lumarians, possessed advanced agricultural techniques, ensuring the utmost cleanliness and adherence to organic practices. Hux's interest was piqued, and he reached out to establish contact with the Lumarian authorities. Negotiations ensued, with Hux emphasizing the need for clean, vegan food that met his strict standards.
A few weeks later, the Finalizer arrived at Rylis. Hux and a small delegation were greeted by Lumarian ambassadors, led by Ambassador Orla. The Lumarians had prepared a feast showcasing their organic produce, an impressive display of colorful fruits and vegetables that seemed to sparkle with freshness.
As they walked through the lush fields of Rylis, Hux observed the meticulous care taken by the Lumarians in their agricultural practices. "You must understand, cleanliness is of utmost importance to me," Hux expressed, his voice tinged with a hint of apprehension. "I cannot tolerate any compromise on that front. Can you assure me that your farming methods meet my stringent standards?"
Ambassador Orla, a Lumarian with a serene demeanor, smiled warmly at Hux. "General Hux, our agricultural practices are centered around maintaining the highest levels of cleanliness and purity. We employ advanced filtration systems to protect our crops from contaminants. Additionally, our commitment to organic farming ensures that no harmful chemicals or pesticides are used in the cultivation process. I can guarantee that the food we provide will meet your exacting requirements."
Hux visibly relaxed, his rigid posture easing slightly. "Very well, Ambassador Orla. Your assurances are appreciated. We must maintain the higheststandards, not just for the sake of our dietary preferences but for the health and efficiency of our crew."
Ambassador Orla nodded in agreement. "Indeed, General Hux. We share a common goal in prioritizing the well-being of our respective communities. We understand the importance of nourishing the body while ensuring utmost cleanliness and purity."
Back on the Finalizer, Hux eagerly awaited the arrival of the first shipment from Rylis. The cargo bays were transformed into makeshift greenhouses, meticulously designed to replicate the optimal growing conditions of Rylis. Hux personally oversaw the preparations, wearing gloves and a mask, ensuring every surface was sanitized to his exacting standards.
As the cargo bay doors finally opened, revealing the crates of fresh, organic produce, Hux's eyes gleamed with satisfaction. The vibrant colors and enticing aroma permeated the air, a stark contrast to the processed rations they had endured for so long. The crew members gathered around, their curiosity piqued by the sight of these unfamiliar, enticing fruits and vegetables.
Lieutenant Mitaka, a loyal and disciplined officer, approached Hux cautiously. "General Hux, what are these?" he asked, pointing at a vibrant purple vegetable.
Hux smiled, a rare expression that softened his stern demeanor. "Lieutenant, these are eggplants, a versatile and nutritious vegetable. They will add flavor and variety to our meals, ensuring our dietary needs are met."
He examined the eggplant with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. "And they are safe to consume, General? No contaminants or impurities?"
Hux nodded confidently. "Rest assured, Lieutenant. These crops come from Rylis, a planet renowned for its uncontaminated environment and strict organic practices. The Lumarians have assured me of their cleanliness and adherence to rigorous standards."
With Hux's reassurance, the crew's skepticism transformed into anticipation. They eagerly began incorporating the fresh produce into their meals, relishing the burst of flavors and textures that had been absent for far too long.
Over time, the presence of fresh, organic food on board the Finalizer had a transformative effect. The crew members noticed improvements in their energy levels and overall well-being. Hux himself felt invigorated, his vegan diet providing him with the nutrients he needed to lead with clarity and focus.
In the following days, Hux implemented additional measures to maintain cleanliness on the Star Destroyer. Enhanced hygiene protocols were enforced, with increased frequency of sanitation procedures and rigorous inspections. Hux's own personal habits, such as frequent handwashing and the use of gloves, set an example for the crew to follow.
As the Finalizer continued its missions across the galaxy, Hux's commitment to his veganism and germaphobia remained steadfast. The trade agreement with Rylis flourished, ensuring a steady supply of clean, vegan food for the crew. Hux's strict adherence to his principles earned him respect and admiration, as his crew witnessed the unwavering determination of their leader.
In the vastness of space, General Hux had found a way to navigate the challenges of maintaining a vegan lifestyle and upholding his germaphobic tendencies. His conviction in his beliefs propelled him forward, inspiring those around him to recognize the importance of principles, even amidst the chaos of war. And with each meal, the Finalizer became a testament to the power of a determined mind and a compassionate heart.

In the face of increasing scrutiny over environmental issues and labor practices within the fashion industry, H&M and Inditex have made significant investments in lab-grown cotton through a partnership with Boston-based startup Galy. This investment represents a pivotal shift in how major clothing retailers are addressing the sustainability challenges tied to traditional cotton production. Traditional cotton farming has long been criticized for its heavy environmental toll. The process involves a multitude of steps—ginning, carding, spinning, and so on—which collectively contribute to a significant carbon footprint. Moreover, the cultivation of cotton drains enormous quantities of water and requires extensive use of pesticides and fertilizers. To illustrate the severity of this issue, consider that for every t-shirt washed, about 50 times the amount of water is consumed during the cotton-growing process itself. Cotton accounts for 16% of all insecticide sales globally and takes up approximately 2.3% of the world's arable land. Enter Galy, which promises a revolutionary solution. Through lab-grown cotton technology, Galy has presented a method that, at an industrial scale, claims to reduce water use by 99%, land use by 97%, and the negative impact of fertilizers by 91% when compared to conventional cotton farming. This staggering reduction in environmental impact can position lab-grown cotton as a viable alternative in an industry often marred by ecological concerns. Galy was founded in 2019 by Luciano Bueno, whose journey began in the textile world during high school, selling t-shirts to make ends meet. Following his tenure at Deloitte, where he worked with textile companies, and after attempting to create moisture-wicking shirts with his startup, Bueno shifted his focus to lab-grown products after observing the growth of lab-grown meat ventures. His vision culminated in Galy's innovative lab-grown cotton process, which involves taking cotton plant cells, feeding them sugar, and manipulating their genetic makeup to produce cotton fibers. The traction gained by Galy in the investment community reflects a broader trend of sustainability-driven initiatives within the fashion sector. These efforts have garnered commitment not just from H&M but also from Zara-owner Inditex, both of which are significant consumers in the cotton market. Martin Ekenbark, head of H&M’s circular innovation lab, noted a rising consumer preference for cotton-based fabrics due to their tactile appeal. This demand is juxtaposed against the backdrop of H&M's decision to cease sourcing cotton from China's Xinjiang region, due to allegations of forced labor, which brought accusations from critics of contributing to human rights violations. This pivot illustrates the urgent need for sustainable cotton sources free from ethical dilemmas. Inditex’s long-term commitment to environmental innovation is evidenced by its investment in over 300 startups aimed at discovering environmentally friendly materials. Collaborative efforts with Galy focus on enhancing fiber quality, ensuring that lab-grown cotton maintains the integrity and attributes of traditional cotton while reducing its ecological footprint. However, challenges remain. Lab-grown cotton production is still in its infancy, with Galy only capable of producing small quantities today. To transition from experimental phases to scalable production, significant financial backing is essential. Galy recently announced a $33 million funding round led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, with participation from industry giants H&M and Inditex. This brings its total funding to $65 million, crucial for advancing research and development. Despite the enthusiasm and infusion of capital, the startup landscape for lab-grown cotton is still fragile. The hurdles include navigating the complexities of biological processes and addressing market dynamics that might favor conventional cotton due to its lower price point. For context,
cotton prices hover around $1 per kilogram, while the meat market, which has experienced significant investment rapid growth in lab-grown options, has far greater financial resources—exceeding a trillion dollars globally. Galy's unique approach benefits from simplicity—plant cells require only sugar for growth, which sidesteps the expensive bioprocessing seen in lab-grown meat. Moreover, since cotton is not a food product, Galy’s production process does not need to adhere to the same stringent hygiene standards, potentially lowering production costs further. The future of lab-grown cotton is promising yet uncertain. Experts believe that competitive ventures are likely to emerge as the sector gears towards commercialization, echoing the trajectory observed in lab-grown meat industries. For instance, in 2013, the debut of a lab-grown hamburger prompted a rapid influx of investment and innovation—an evolution that could mirror Galy's journey in the cotton domain. As the fashion industry gears up to respond to consumer calls for transparency and sustainability, the collaboration between Galy, H&M, and Inditex could serve as a model for others. The integration of lab-grown materials lies at the intersection of ethical responsibility and innovative design, reflecting a wider commitment to a sustainable future in fashion. As these brands push towards greener alternatives and strive to redefine what's considered ethical in the industry, stakeholders and consumers alike will be watching closely. The implications of their success—or lack thereof—could reshape how we think about sustainability in fashion for generations to come.

Why Choose Natural Wine?
Natural wine is a type of wine that is produced using organic or biodynamic farming methods and minimal intervention during the winemaking process. This means that natural wines are made without the use of chemicals, additives, or industrial techniques that can alter the natural flavour and aroma of the grapes. In recent years, best natural wines have gained popularity among wine enthusiasts who are looking for a healthier and more environmentally friendly option. In this article, we will explore some of the reasons why you should buy natural wine online.
Better For Your Health
Natural wine is made without the use of additives such as sulphites, which are commonly used in conventional winemaking to preserve the wine and prevent oxidation. Sulphites can cause allergic reactions in some people, and studies have shown that they can trigger migraines and other health issues. Natural wine is also free from other chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides, which can be harmful to human health.
Better For the Environment
Natural wine is made using organic or biodynamic farming methods, which prioritise the health of the soil and the ecosystem. These methods avoid the use of harmful chemicals and promote biodiversity by encouraging the growth of cover crops and other vegetation. Natural winemakers also tend to use less water and energy during the winemaking process, which reduces their carbon footprint.
Authentic Flavours and Aromas
Because natural wine is made using minimal intervention, it retains the authentic flavours and aromas of the grapes. Conventional winemaking techniques can often mask or alter these natural characteristics, resulting in a wine that tastes and smells artificial. Natural wine is often described as having a unique and complex flavour profile that is a reflection of the terroir and the winemaker's style.
Support for Small Producers
Natural wine is often produced by small, independent winemakers who are passionate about their craft. By choosing natural wine, you are supporting these producers and their commitment to sustainable farming practices and minimal intervention winemaking techniques. This helps to promote diversity in the wine industry and ensures that small producers can continue to thrive.
A Growing Trend
The popularity of natural wine has been growing in recent years, with more and more restaurants and wine shops offering natural wine options. This means that it is easier than ever to find natural wine and to explore the different styles and flavours that are available. By joining this trend, you can be part of a community that values authenticity, sustainability, and quality.
