“Mingyu, slow down,” you said with a sigh, trying not to roll your eyes.
“What was he thinking?” Mingyu spat, not acknowledging what you had just said. He gripped the steering wheel even harder.
You watched as his knuckles began to turn white and rubbed his arm soothingly. “Baby, take a deep breath. Relax.”
He just shrugged you off and cursed at the car in front of him.
“Don’t fucking tell me to relax.”
“It’s not a big deal, Gyu.”
He actually turned his head towards you and looked at you this time. “You’re joking.”
You shrugged sheepishly. “I’ve had worse.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”
You winced, knowing you’d probably made it worse and that Mingyu was likely now picturing the grimy hands of ill-intentioned strangers all over your body.
“I should have him killed,” he snarled.
To most, that threat would sound completely ridiculous or utterly insane, but your fiancé was the head of the Seoul mob-the South West branch anyway- and he was no stranger to violence. Having someone killed would be as easy as snapping his fingers.
You scoffed to call his bluff.
“You think I won’t?” he challenged and you groaned.
“You promised you were done with that.”
It’s true, one of the conditions of your engagement had been that Mingyu agree to put the more sinister side of his business to rest, and although you trusted him, in all honesty, you weren’t sure how well he was upholding his end of the deal.
“I’d make an exception.”
“Well don’t. I don’t want some poor guy’s blood on my hands.”
At that, the car screeched to a stop right in the middle of the freeway. The cars behind you honked and flashed their lights at Mingyu as they maneuvered to avoid a collision.
You huffed in frustration, wanting to bang your head against the dashboard. This was exactly why you didn’t like for Mingyu to drive himself: he pulled dangerous shit all the time like this. Literally, all of his other men had drivers who took them places and you desperately wished Mingyu would hire someone, but he insisted that it was safest if he was the one driving (yet here you were in the middle of the highway).
“You could’ve fucking killed us!” you shouted, more annoyed than anything.
Mingyu took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. But y/n, he’s not just some poor guy.”
“He was trying to get a rise out of you, Gyu. He fucking hates you, of course, he’d go after me, and he was drunk.”
Mingyu narrowed his eyes at you, foot still pressed firmly on the brake. “That’s not a fucking excuse, you of all people should know that. Why are you trying to defend him?”
“I’m not trying to defend him, I’m just saying he doesn’t deserve to die. Can we please just get home?”
Mingyu relented and put the car back into motion making you breathe a sigh of relief.
Even though he didn’t say anything else you could tell his mind was still going a thousand miles a minute. You watched him chew at his lip in silence and wondered what was going on in that beautiful head of his. Nothing good, you could be sure of that.
Mingyu’s mind was darker than most. Occupational hazard. He carried so much pain that you hadn’t known about when you first met him. He’d let you in slowly, keeping you at arm’s length for months, until he almost lost you. And then he knew he couldn’t keep things from you anymore. It was still a challenge to understand his thought process sometimes, but you liked it that way. How could a ruthless, power-hungry mobster also be the most loving, family-oriented person you’d ever met in your life? How could someone who dropped a grand on a dinner like it was nothing secretly rather spend one more night picnicking with crappy Chinese food on the bedroom floor in your old apartment? You couldn’t think of an answer, and you didn’t want to.
The guy at the bar tonight had been some rival of Mingyu’s. You hadn’t seen him before, but you could tell because when Mingyu got up to get the two of you more drinks he swooped in and laid it on heavy. He looped one arm around your waist and placed his other hand on your knee and began attempting to seduce you. Sure, you were uncomfortable but more than anything you were angry. And tired. Tired of being used as bait, something to get to Mingyu.
You didn’t want to make a scene so you listened to the asshole talk about how much better he’d treat you than Mingyu until your fiancĂ© eventually returned with your drinks in hand, face beet red, eyes dark with anger.
The man, you never caught his name, left the bar with a broken nose. Mingyu left with bruised knuckles. You’d thought it would end at that, but of course, once Mingyu got started it was hard for him to stop. It was a gift in the bedroom, but a curse in the rest of your life.
Then, so softly you almost didn’t hear it, Mingyu broke the silence in the car and said “I know what he said to you,” and it all clicked.
Normally, a hand on your shoulder, thigh, ass was enough to set Mingyu off, but combine that with the filthy words he’d undoubtedly overheard spilling from the man’s lips
no wonder all he could see was red.
“Mingyu, I-“
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I didn’t want to start something.”
“Start something? Is that true? Or do you think he’s right?”
“No, of course not.”
“Do you think he can satisfy you better than I can?”
“Mingyu!”
“Well do you?”
You shook your head and rubbed your thighs together, fighting a shiver. As irritating as Mingyu’s jealousy could be, the effect it had on you was even more infuriating. The man could already turn you on without doing anything and whenever he started acting a little jealous it was game over for you. It was pathetic, really.
“Why the fuck did he even think it was okay to look at you, let alone touch you?”
“I don’t know,” you shrugged finally settling in to play the game. “These big dudes with huge muscles just think they can have whoever they want.”
Mingyu whipped his head back towards you. “What did you say?”
You ignored him. “I mean he definitely wouldn’t be as good as you, but he could do some damage.” Mingyu was full-on glaring at you now, and you wanted to tell him to keep his eyes on the road, but you couldn’t give up so fast. “I mean, just one of his hands could probably wrap around my whole neck. Like they were giant, and you know what they say about guys with big hands-“
“Do you think this is funny?”
Any sane person wouldn’t even think about taunting Mingyu like this, not with his reputation, but you couldn’t be sane to be with someone like Mingyu anyway, and besides, you knew he was a big softie at heart.
“A little,” you admitted. “You look really hot right now.”
He really did. His hair was tousled with silver highlights from the moonlight streaming in through the windshield, his tan skin was flushed with adrenaline, and his white button-up was unbuttoned just a few times to show off his collarbone. You bit your lip. You were so fucking weak.
“That’s not going to work.”
“No?” You quirked an eyebrow and leaned over the console to see that he was already more than half hard in his dress pants. “Because it looks like it’s working.” You reached over and began to palm him through his trousers, smirking when he cursed and rolled his neck at the contact.
“Y/n, if I have to pull over, you’re not going to be able to walk for the next week.”
Oh no, that’d be horrible you thought to yourself and rolled your eyes. He had to know that’s what you secretly wanted, right? Right? Why were men so stupid?
Either way, you took your hand back and moved it up under the hem of your dress to where you were feeling a little desperate for some friction. You sighed deeply when you rubbed yourself over your panties, not even surprised at how wet you were.
“Fuck,” you hissed out and hiked your legs up onto the seat so you could give Mingyu a better view.
“Stop that.”
He said it so forcefully that you froze, fingers hovering over your panties, about to pull them to the side. Then you smiled.
“No.” You went ahead and did it anyway, slipping two fingers inside of yourself easily.
You weren’t one to defy Mingyu often, especially when it came to what he asked of you in the bedroom, but you knew how crazy it drove him and just couldn’t resist.
Mingyu groaned, trying and failing to maintain an angry expression. His eyes betrayed an absolutely sinful lust that made you want to melt and you wished more than anything he’d just pull the fucking car over.
“Fuck, Gyu,” you gasped, “I wish these were your fingers, you’re so good with your fingers.”
“Yeah? You sure you wish they’re my fingers? Not someone else’s?”
You shook your head vigorously. “Never. You’re the only one who knows how to make me cum that hard.”
“Is that what you want? To cum hard?”
“God, yes,” you moaned, pumping your fingers in and out of you faster.
“Take off your dress.”
“What?” you weren’t sure if you’d heard him right, you were still driving down the highway after all.
“You heard me. Take. It. Off.”
Not wanting to push your luck any further you didn’t hesitate to listen this time and pulled the loose fabric up and over your head.
“Good girl,” he praised and you whined. You were still wearing your bra and underwear and as much as you’d love to flash oncoming traffic, you hoped Mingyu wouldn’t ask you to take them off.
“You can touch yourself,” he said and you complied, knowing it was more of an instruction than an allowance.
It felt good, really good, but you still wished it was him instead of you.
“Fuck, darling you look so beautiful like that, God, I can’t believe I get to marry you.”
“If, you stop, killing people,” you managed to get out through gritted teeth and Mingyu laughed.
“I’m not going to kill him, baby. I made a promise. You’re too important to risk losing, even if he is a fucking prick.”
You whimpered, the mixture of complete head-over-heels love you felt for Mingyu and pleasure making you crumble.
“Don’t worry, baby,” he said, reaching over and taking you by the wrist, stalling your movements just as you were about to fall over the edge. “I’m gonna fuck you so hard you’ll forget you ever met that asshole.”
lmk what you think i always appreciate feedback!!

PIECK knew something was up whenever bertholdt said you weren't answering his texts and hadn't been showing up to work before you even went on vacation. she knew you were on vacation and that you were pissed with her, but even so you never ignored texts from bertholdt.
her suspicions only rose whenever porco and reiner told her the same thing, that you'd suddenly gone awol on the two of them out of nowhere.
they were confirmed when zeke came back into town and said the same thing.
she sits on her couch, shoulders shaking as she cries with porco's arms wrapped around her. reiner, bert, zeke, and annie, who reiner and bert brought for some reason, stare at her in complete worry.
you went awol just this sunday, telling each and everyone of them that you were going on vacation and wouldn't be in town for a little while. bertholdt hadn't seen you at work for almost three weeks now, two and a half of them after your sudden vacation.
"she can't be on vacation," pieck sobs, "she always answers your guys' texts. no matter what!"
"maybe she's just in a different country? she might just not be able to get reception," porco seems unsure as he says this.
"she can't be. she would've told me, pieck, or even bertholdt. god, she would've told all of us," zeke's head is in his hands while his teeth grind together.
"okay, so where would she be if she were still in paradis," annie speaks up while gesturing her arm in a circle.
"who fucking knows," reiner sighs, "when'd you last see her, babe?"
"at work before she stopped showing up. she said she was gonna get coffee at that one café she loves going to. other than that, she didn't say anything about plans or going out with anybody," bertholdt is laced with confusion and his arms are crossed.
"we got into a bad fight that night," pieck sniffles, "she left the house a few hours later, i just thought she was going to stay with one of you guys or yelena."
"what'd you even argue about?"
she grips at her hair with tears rushing down her face, "i can't even remember. it was probably so petty and stupid. the only thing i remember is her telling me that she hated me and me telling her that she was a fuck up."
"i'm so sorry, pieck," porco squeezes her shaky form tight to his chest.
"wait," zeke's standing up abruptly and pointing at bertholdt, "she went where?!"
"oh my god, she went to café scout!!! maybe the workers heard something," reiner perks up along with everyone else.
"holy shit, maybe that one girl is there!! she probably saw something," porco smiles.
"louise! she definitely knows (name)! she probably saw something! let's go," pieck jumps off of the couch and stumbles towards the front door of her house.
the rest of them follow after, all deciding that bertholdt's van, he's usually the designated driver, is the car they'll get into. they all yell at a fumbling bertholdt to hurry up and unlock the car as they stand at the car. he does so while screaming, jumping into the driver's seat and starting the ignition. reiner's jumping in the passenger seat and annie's in the first row of seats behind bert.
before porco can even close the door behind him, bertholdt is driving off towards the café. porco is screaming along with pieck as they're thrown around the van due to their lack of seatbelts and the both of them standing to sit in their seat. their screaming has everyone else screaming as bert speeds up the car despite the oncoming speed bump. bertholdt and reiner hit their heads against the roof of the car, a loud bang resonating throughout the vehicle. pieck and porco's back hit the roof as well, but luckily for pieck she lands on the first row of seats next to annie.
porco, unfortunately, lands on the floor. zeke would've laughed if it wasn't for his own head slamming against the carpeted roof of the van. annie holds onto pieck's arm whenever she's in a sitting position, screaming along with reiner for bertholdt to slow the car down as they see another speed bump.
he doesn't.
porco is once again thrown against the roof.
bertholdt is speeding, even as he gets onto the freeway with other cars. he's stressed out.
when they get there, they all wonder how the fuck bertholdt didn't even get pulled over and how the hell they even managed to survive. bertholdt cries out apologies as reiner and porco puke their guts out in the huge parking lot while annie gags and tries not to vomit at watching reiner and porco do it themselves. pieck is holding her hand and trying to cover her eyes while zeke manages to cover her ears and cringes at porco and reiner.
bertholdt's now sobbing at annie, profusely apologizing, even getting on all fours and begging for her forgiveness.
"how are you gonna get on your hands and knees for annie but not for your boyfriend," porco coughs before he spits out saliva to get rid of the taste in his mouth.
reiner follows behind him in a grimace, hand grabbing at his now emptied stomach and the other going to wipe at his mouth.
"dude, gross!! don't wipe it off with your hands!! pieck and bertholdt usually have tissues on hand," porco shouts to reiner, who drops his hand halfway.
pieck and zeke comfort the emetophobe annie all while bertholdt gives reiner and porco tissues and a breath mint. he gives them hand sanitizer as well, and throws a pack of peppermint frost gum at the two of them, clogging his nose up.
they scoff but oblige, both now looking somehow decent and also smelling it. pieck's calming down a shaking annie, who's buried herself in pieck's warm arms, and zeke stands to the side awkwardly.
porco and reiner rush to the order counter when they all step inside, ordering instead of asking the cashier for the employee they were looking for. annie, who's now calm, pushes them aside harshly.
"ignore them, is that girl louise working today? we need to talk to her," she asks and the poor cashier is terrified at annie's deadpan face.
"n-no!! sh-she should be at home!!"
"give me her address," annie starts to lean her front over the counter, almost pushing the poor girl into a heart attack.
she grabs a napkin and a pen, hurriedly scribbling down louise's address and running off into the back.
"we can get food on the way there," annie shrugs nonchalantly, "preferably wendy's or something."
————
bertholdt and pieck almost feel bad for the poor girl whenever she answers the door.
with annie's glare piercing into her and zeke's towering over her, they were sure she'd pissed herself.
"y-yes... what do you need," she digs her nails into the door.
pieck shoves them both aside and steps forward, louise lights up with recognition.
"don't worry, they aren't gonna hurt you," she waves her hand, completely ignoring how they both still glare at louise even over pieck's shoulder, "i just need to ask you something."
"what is it?"
"have you seen (name) lately? the girl who usually come in with me."
"last time i saw her was around a few weeks ago," louise shrugs, "wait, did she go missing?!"
"yea, we're trying to figure out where she was last on the night of her disappearance. did she say anything to you...? anything at all," pieck steps forward with a desperate hand on her heart.
"she said something about going drinking with two friends... something about them being blonde and short," she scratches at her temple, slight pout on her face, "that's all i can remember."
"did she say what bar," pieck steps closer again, putting her hand on the door frame.
louise shakes her head sadly, eyes dropping down to their feet.
with that, pieck broke into tears again and was led away by porco and annie. the rest of them followed behind, leaving louise inside her home.
"she has to be somewhere," pieck cries into her hands, "she has to be!!"
zeke's got a hand on his forehead while he loosely holds onto his glasses with his other hand. he lets out a choked out sob, and everyone turns to him.
"zeke... are you... crying?" reiner turns to look at zeke over his shoulder.
"fuck.. yea. it just doesn't make sense. she's gotta be somewhere," he rubs the bridge of his nose.
"maybe the guys louise mentioned know something...," bertholdt inserts as he looks in the rear view mirror.
the statement has pieck shouting at the meek boy, "we don't know what they look like!!! all we know is that one is blonde and one is short! we're at a dead end! we're fucking stuck!!!"
bertholdt visibly flinches in his seat while his throat clogs up, hands gripping at the steering wheel. his eyes are welling up with tears that he doesn't let out. reiner's hand is on his arm in comfort, eyebrows bunched up in concern.
pieck wails once more, "god, i'm so sorry bertl. this isn't your fault. you were trying to help."
he sniffles, "it's fine. i understand. we're all just upset and desperate to find (name)."
"we'll find her soon enough."
————
the loneliness is getting to your head.
you're in the secluded dark even during the day.
you just crave to be with someone, so much that you're getting desperate.
a tug at erwin's sleeve has him stopping and turning back to face you. you've got tears spilling over your cheeks and snot running into your mouth while you lean on an elbow to hold onto his sleeve for dear life.
it's not even nighttime, it's early afternoon. erwin had just come into the room to feed you lunch and to just leave after that. but you couldn't handle it anymore. being alone made everything dark and silent.
even if the lights and televisions were turned on.
"please," you beg and rest your forehead against his arm, "please don't leave me alone."
erwin's cheeks are lighting up while his eyes widen. his hand comes up to stroke the back of your head as it now rests on his hip. he doesn't mind the wet spot forming on his pants, this was the first time you ever initiated anything.
"i won't, darling. i need to go put the tray in the sink and let levi know i will be in here," he's taking a step away from you, jumping at your sudden loud sobs and tugging.
"no! no! please, i don't want to be alone," your eyes are squeezed shut while you grip onto his pants for dear life.
"but i need to go put these dishes away. after that, i can—"
"no!" you scream and push your head harder against his leg, "no! please don't leave! i don't want you to leave."
he sighs, putting the tray of empty dish onto your bedside table. he grabs the room key out of back pocket before he picks you up bridal style.
"you run, levi'll break your legs," his fingers dig into your skin, but loosen at the frantic nod you give.
he manages to unlock your bedroom door in a complicated way, which you don't feel like questioning, and strolls outside of the room.
he goes out of your quarters, it's the furthest you've ever been. you're in a large room that connects into other rooms, the amount of doors is slightly overwhelming to you even as you look at them.
to your shock, you pass by people. living people.
they all seem to be staff, and the only sort of acknowledgement you get from them is a wide eyed stare with a dropped jaw.
"levi is still in his study, correct," he asks while shifting his hold on you.
a girl with ginger hair and auburn eyes speaks up, "yes sir! he requested no one to enter."
erwin nods and walks past the girl, who gives you a small friendly wave whenever you look out from erwin's arm.
you turn your attention back to erwin whenever you hear the sound of a door opening and closing.
you're in a new room, which is assumed to be levi's study, that's lighted up by the cloudy and grey natural light that shines through the blinds and windows. there are bookshelves on both sides of the room and you notice that on both bookshelves the order of the books goes from largest to smallest. levi sits at a desk in the middle of the room, facing the door, as his hand holding a pen runs across the paper.
"what do you need," levi looks up for a brief moment, but snaps his head up once more.
"what's the brat doing here," he motions to you in erwin's arms.
erwin's sitting you on a leather couch in the office, wiping away some tears with his thumbs. he steps away from you and takes ahold of levi by the arm, essentially dragging him to the door of the study.
the dawning realization that they're going to leave you alone has you tripping over your feet as you run to the door. your hand grips onto levi's shirt and you tug him towards you, pulling him away from the door.
"i don't want to be alone," you cry while shoving your face into levi's chest, he cringes at your snot and tears soaking through his shirt.
"oh," he blinks, awkwardly rubbing your back with his hand, "why'd you bring her here?"
"because she wouldn't let me leave to put her tray away, which i now need you to do. i'm going to get in the bath with her, which you are welcome to join if you'd like."
"i don't like baths, sitting in your own filth," he scrunches his nose up.
"to each their own," erwin shrugs, giving levi a kiss on his temple and grabbing ahold of your hand.
"come along, darling," he smiles at how quickly you intertwine fingers with him and join his side.
he leads you into a different bathroom than the one that you use. there's not much of a difference besides it size, the tub's size, and the long counter built for two.
"undress for me, love," his giant hands are massaging your shoulders before he pulls away and walks over to the tub.
you look to the bathroom door, only to find a doorknob with a keypad, something you didn't notice when you walked in, and frown. you just sigh and slip off the the pastel pink nightgown you were wearing, the fabric pooling around your feet as it drops to the floor.
you look up into the mirror, and you almost want to cry. you look nothing like yourself. you barely had any life behind those (eye color) eyes and your eyebrows were now naturally furrowed in sadness. you've got fading bruises on one side of your body, trailing downwards all the way to your calf.
you decide to take off your panties before you let your thoughts roam, stepping out of them after they've dropped to the floor.
you hear the door open, to which you and erwin look to. only it's not levi.
it's a young boy with ebony black hair and emerald green eyes that stands at 5'10.
you instinctively cover yourself up and turn your back towards him, embarrassing washing over you in waves.
erwin scrambles to block the boys view, who is seemingly enjoying it, and furrows his bushy brows.
"who are you and what are you doing here? where is levi?!"
"levi sent me sir. he gave me clothing for the girl and then said you would be in here," his eyes try to take a peek over erwin's shoulder.
erwin snatches the clothing out of his hand and slams the door shut in the boy's face. he scoffs in annoyance while he puts the clothes onto the counter, now focusing his attention onto you.
"i'm sorry about that, dear. are you alright," he puts a hand on your back and guides you to his chest.
"i'm okay," you sniff, "just wanna get in the bath now."
he smiles a bit, leaving a sweet kiss on your forehead before he steps away. you watch him rid himself of his white button up and try not to let your eyes bulge out at his body. however, you can't exactly resist the urge whenever erwin is finally naked.
erwin's stomach has abs carved into it, a well groomed happy trail leading to his cock. the thighs in his muscles and back are almost screaming out at you whenever he turns and lifts his hand to ruffle his hair.
you look down to his feet, feeling ashamed for even staring for so long.
he gets into the bath after a moment, knees spread wide for you to sit between. his arms are resting on the rim of the tub while he sighs at the hot temperature. you get in, goosebumps running up and down your body as the heat invades your colder body. you settle in between his legs and lean back against his chest, closing your eyes.
his arms wrap around you, pulling you closer to him than you were before. you put a hand over his arm, silently giving him a message to keep his arms where they were.
his lips kiss at the crown of your head, and it seems sweet enough to where you think you might be able to smile. but you don't.
watching your eyes flutter, he mumbles into your hair, "the hot water make you tired?"
"yeah," you hum, "don't really like the hot outside of this. i prefer the cold."
"so does levi," erwin chuckles as he draws circles into your skin.
"does that mean you like summer?"
"no, i prefer fall or spring. both usually have the adequate temperature," he sighs.
"erwin," you ask after a few seconds, "why is levi so cold?"
"why are you only now asking?"
"i meant to ask sooner but i was never really... given the chance," you say bitterly.
"well, levi has been through a tough life. he almost went to jail before i met him. but it isn't my story to tell," he smiles at the memory.
you nod and finally let out a yawn, "i'm going to fall asleep soon."
from then, erwin washes the two of you so you both can get out of the bath. during this, you find out he's actually quite playful. he gathers up bubbly soap in his hands and blows them into your face, hearty laughs following immediately after.
he stands before you once you're out of the tub, wrapping a towel around his waist and one around your shoulders. you look up at him while he brushes your hair and puts on a few drops of lotion on your face.
you're trying to ignore the voice in the back of your head that maybe he really does care. because at the end of the day,
you still have a collar and chain on.

ITS EYE AGAINST I
... And me against You. Hello random people of the internet, and the select RvB audience I’m intending to talk to. Time for millions to ignore my existence, while a select few look at my fancy garbage. Now, with no sense of decorum, or tact... I present to you. That Red vs Blue seasons 15 through 17 are continuity breaking and noncanon. To be honest, I’m not overly fond of the over all plotlines and more than a few handfuls of episodes were just... dull. And that’s saying something for a series I’ve been attached to for the last decade. That isn’t to say there weren’t parts I didn’t like. There were plenty of things that were just fantastic and launched perfectly. But let’s get to the whys and hows. Let’s set out the point system: First point. The Blues and Reds, our blue visor assmonkeys... were unnecessarily stupid. They were a copypasta team, with a poor excuse to be there, that not only doesn’t fit what is already established but breaks continuity by being there. If we were to take the rest of the 15-17 series, it’d be easier to make them into alternative universe counter parts or what-ifs, from different timelines caused by the series later use of Time travel. Rather than this blessed mess. They spit in the face of Agent Florida’s workhistory. And while you can see where the idea came from, the execution and establishment was lacking. The very fact that it includes Doc already tells you that we’re not with Agent Kansas anymore, and that it utterly destroyed Doc’s history prior to coming to Blood Gulch. Second Point. The Time Travel. [frustrated exhausted ugh-ing] The best I can say is that the series analysis of Time Travel was fantastic. It acknowledged that the inclusion of Time Travel is meant to break continuity and reshape it. The difference here, is that it only broke continuity. In fact it shattered it so badly that we’d have to ask the Homestuck Fandom to pick the remaining pieces back up, and classpect it for good measure. The fact that Human History was so severely fusterclucked by our Teams already shows you how much respect Continuity got in these last seasons, as well as how much respect to Canon. And then there were the “Gods”. Just... Introducing someone for the funny designs and the fantastic graphic and digital movements is nice, but it doesn’t do anything. See every pitfall CGI and 3D ran into for the last few decades. See, RvB is meant to run along side Halo without destroying one another in an “Upstoppable Force meets Immovable Object” sort of way. And if nothing else, its already established that RvB also has ties to Marathon too (which, while muddled up, still works). And while plenty of the shenanigans were fantastic (Loved that Cyclops scene), the reason they got there was Weak, and it just utterly detonates itself like Church and his stomach bomb... Surrounded by people you hate, and being hunted down by the world’s worst player at a knock-knock jokes. The Third Point I despise Jax. ... I kid, that isn’t the third point. But I still don’t like the Jax. His growth into a terrible director was funny, but it doesn’t really save him or his purpose in the series. I digress. Its what I dub the “Super Hero Ex Machina”. In a “Super Hero Ex Machina” situation, reality crashes in, breaks both Narrative flow and rules, for drama. And example is with Spiderman and his web shooting. In his narrative, he can save someone easily from falling with his web shot. But if the Drama Machina Maker is introduced, then the reality of the situation crashes down as the force of the fall would completely shatter the victim’s skeleton if Spiderman caught them. As this is not already established as happening before, its only there to cause drama and not meant for any serious development or character arc. Or if a show adheres to keeping the status quo at all costs. Things that would realistically and permanently mess up the status quo are solved in 1 or 2 episodes. But if Reality crashes because Plot said so, it breaks the established rules of the Narrative (and pacing). Especially if said plotpoint could have already been solved in prior episodes easily. And that’s what they pulled on Agent Washington and his throat injury. Washington is an established survivor. He has survived some pretty messed up stuff, both mentally and physically, and he’s come so far as a character. To a point where he’s almost unrecognizable from when he was first established as the “Noir Detective Soldier Mercenary Man who plays by corrupt rules but still shines that hurting heart of gold once in a while”. Some of the stuff he’s had to survive, and potentially had to survive would’ve killed normal people. Even his writers had to take a step back and say, “No he can’t survive getting cut in half by a car”. RvB is good about changing status quo, and keeping to a rule of “actions have consequences” in order to both forward character and story. So it isn’t like they’re above permanently messing someone up (... Church.) But there are Rules on how its Handled. Story will establish and evolve said rules over time, this is true, but its a “more things change, more they stay the same” situation. And Washington’s injury... breaks that. For easy reason; For one thing, we already have a Freelancer with throat injuries, and he got them in a far worse scenario. Agent Maine was bloody machine gunned in the throat, then tossed off a freeway stories up from a ground we never even saw. And all he got was a messed up voice. There isn’t a good reason to give Wash that injury, realistic as it may be, besides playing it for Drama. And while such a circumstance should be given both the realism and seriousness it deserves, this only works if, you know, don’t play it to make a person or people suffer for Drama. Does this forward Character? No. No it doesn’t. The seasons retreat everyone’s character arcs. What little it does show is how far everyone has come... By making them take 20 steps back, and 5 steps forward. An ultimately useless gesture that neither show cases the human condition of “repeat until you finally get the lesson” or “sometimes shit happens”. Does it move the story? Only for drama. Which is a very weak reason. Even worse, as the series has already established that it can think deeply and use drama as a tool and not a plot point. If not for character or story, is it meant to be a metaphor? Metaphor for what. RvB doesn’t do metaphors. If not metaphor, is it supposed to be informative of the condition itself? RvB has bloody PSAs. No. A story is decent enough if it can mix those questions up without one consuming the other. But there wasn’t a point to do it. Just to see Wash or Carolina or the guys to suffer? To show that sometimes people get injuries they don’t bounce back from? Are you Kidding? We just permanently lost Church, and they set out to find the possibility of his existence again! That right there already Tells you that sometimes folks don’t Bounce Back. There was an entire Arc for Caboose, fer the gods’ sake, talking about it. CABOOSE. What the flyin Fu-- Ahem. There was already a ruling about Actions have Consequences. It was apart of the status quo that went as far back as the Blood Gulch Chronicles. Its filed under “The More things change, the more they stay the same”, and even throughout the Reconstruction series, there were plenty of characters pulling permanently changing stunts that affected them through the rest of their lives, or caused their death for it. [deep breath, lets it out] So. Inspite of my many problems with S15-17, there are things I adored about it. - Donut and Caboose’s arcs. Fantastically done. Caboose getting to the understanding he got in S14 about losing friends was heart breaking and beautiful. Donut’s may seem like retread and flanderization, but that is actually easily explained. When you’re under sufficient stress, your coping mechanisms will boost out from 10 to 100, and just because you’re now fully aware of it doesn’t mean you have the power or development yet to stop. It was a fantastic look into his character. - Sister. They made her into more than just a gimick and Grif’s Sister, which was a problem I had with her in Blood Gulch. Good patch up there. - The Background info and the details in Background Info with our main characters. Ye Gods, we got some backstory! The humor works, the seriousness works, its a beautiful set of puzzle pieces that fit snuggly into both canon and continuity. - Chrovos. Inspite of the time travel plot pitfalls, I actually really liked Chrovos. Wish they did more with them (Him? Her? I don’t remember if they established their pronouns). Did not like Jenkins, inspite of him being created out of a cut character. The Gods didn’t work very much either, and would’ve been better suited as characters that weren’t “gods”. It doesn’t help that they just... had inconsistant rules. - The Freelancers. I love the introduction to the Freelancers and all their nice armor designs. Too bad they’re all feckin’ dead. - Temple. I actually really liked Temple and the idea behind him. However, instead of the malakey we got, and the Time Travel Nonsense that could be theorized afterwards. It would’ve worked better if he had been the leader of a Cult of Personality or sorts, purposely and badly mimicking the hype of the RvB teams’ fame and gathering surviving former stim troopers. The terrorist thing could work, and so could the Church plot. Everything else was stupid. Remove the Time Travel, this isn’t Homestuck Hour. Thanks for you for your continued reading. ... oh Right, I forgot. As awesome as it was to see Locus again, the uselessness of Wash’s throat injury and how he was reintroduced makes him more into a Deus ex Machina (and not that Halo 3 Machinima from way back). Its like fitting a circle peg into a square hole... But getting it stuck halfway and ruining the children’s puzzle toy. ADDENDUM (edited) I hate Hate HATED how Vic parodied Church’s epilogue speech, and I just about wish Church would come back just to beat the shiznet out of him for it.

33,30,36 from the first smutty prompts with royal!tom being kinda jealous of another guy whi tries to hook his girlfriend up
“You heard me. Take. It. Off.”
“I’m gonna fuck you so hard that you forget you ever even met that asshole.”
“If I have to pull over, you won’t be able to walk for the next week.“
yo it’s literally been over a MONTH and I still haven’t answered this skdjdhsh I’m so sorry ahh but here it is!! in one of your other asks you said I could choose mob!tom or royal!tom so I did it for mob!tom I hope that’s okay!!! also this is the first mob au I’ve ever written soooo :))
“Tom, slow down,” you said with a sigh, trying not to roll your eyes.
“What was he thinking?” Tom spat, not acknowledging what you had just said. He gripped the steering wheel even harder.
You watched as his knuckles began to turn white and rubbed his arm soothingly. “Baby, take a deep breath. Relax.”
He just shrugged you off and cursed at the car in front of him.
“Don’t fucking tell me to relax.”
“It’s not a big deal, Tommy.”
He actually turned his head towards you and looked at you this time. “You’re joking.”
You shrugged sheepishly. “I’ve had worse.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better?”
You winced, knowing you’d probably made it worse and that Tom was likely now picturing the grimy hands of ill-intentioned strangers all over your body.
“I should have him killed,” he snarled.
To most, that threat would sound completely ridiculous or utterly insane, but your fiancé was the head of the London mob-the South West branch anyway- and he was no stranger to violence. Having someone killed would be as easy as snapping his fingers.
You scoffed to call his bluff.
“You think I won’t?” he challenged and you groaned.
“You promised you were done with that.”
It’s true, one of the conditions of your engagement had been that Tom agree to put the more sinister side of his business to rest, and although you trusted him, in all honesty, you weren’t sure how well he was upholding his end of the deal.
“I’d make an exception.”
“Well don’t. I don’t want some poor guy’s blood on my hands.”
At that, the car screeched to a stop right in the middle of the freeway. The cars behind you honked and flashed their lights at Tom as they maneuvered to avoid a collision.
You huffed in frustration, wanting to bang your head against the dashboard. This was exactly why you didn’t like for Tom to drive himself: he pulled dangerous shit all the time like this. Literally, all of his other men had drivers who took them places and you desperately wished Tom would hire someone, but he insisted that it was safest if he was the one driving (yet here you were in the middle of the highway).
“You could’ve fucking killed us!” you shouted, more annoyed than anything.
Tom took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. But y/n, he’s not just some poor guy.”
“He was trying to get a rise out of you, Tom. He fucking hates you, of course, he’d go after me, and he was drunk.”
Tom narrowed his eyes at you, foot still pressed firmly on the brake. “That’s not a fucking excuse, you of all people should know that. Why are you trying to defend him?”
“I’m not trying to defend him, I’m just saying he doesn’t deserve to die. Can we please just get home?”
Tom relented and put the car back into motion making you breathe a sigh of relief.
Even though he didn’t say anything else you could tell his mind was still going a thousand miles a minute. You watched him chew at his lip in silence and wondered what was going on in that beautiful head of his. Nothing good, you could be sure of that.
Tom’s mind was darker than most.
The guy at the bar tonight had been some rival of Tom’s. You hadn’t seen him before, but you could tell because when Tom got up to get the two of you more drinks he swooped in and laid it on heavy. He looped one arm around your waist and placed his other hand on your knee and began attempting to seduce you. Sure, you were uncomfortable but more than anything you were angry. And tired. Tired of being used as bait, something to get to Tom.
You didn’t want to make a scene so you listened to the asshole talk about how much better he’d treat you than Tom until your fiancĂ© eventually returned with your drinks in hand, face beet red, eyes dark with anger.
The man, you never caught his name, left the bar with a broken nose. Tom left with bruised knuckles. You’d thought it would end at that, but of course, once Tom got started it was hard for him to stop. It was a gift in the bedroom, but a curse in the rest of your life.
Then, so softly you almost didn’t hear it, Tom broke the silence in the car and said “I know what he said to you,” and it all clicked.
Normally, a hand on your shoulder, thigh, ass was enough to set Tom off, but combine that with the filthy words he’d undoubtedly overheard spilling from the man’s lips
no wonder all he could see was red.
“Tom I-“
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I didn’t want to start something.”
“Start something? Is that true? Or do you think he’s right?”
“No, of course not.”
“Do you think he can satisfy you better than I can?”
“Tom!”
“Well do you?”
You shook your head and rubbed your thighs together, fighting a shiver. As irritating as Tom’s jealousy could be, the effect it had on you was even more infuriating.
Tom whipped his head back towards you. “What did you say?”
You ignored him. “I mean he definitely wouldn’t be as good as you, but he could do some damage.” Tom was full-on glaring at you now, and you wanted to tell him to keep his eyes on the road, but you couldn’t give up so fast. “I mean, just one of his hands could probably wrap around my whole neck. Like they were giant, and you know what they say about guys with big hands-“
“Do you think this is funny?”
Any sane person wouldn’t even think about taunting Tom like this, not with his reputation, but you couldn’t be sane to be with someone like Tom anyway, and besides, you knew he was a big softie at heart.
“A little,” you admitted. “You look really hot right now.”
He really did. His hair was tousled with silver highlights from the moonlight streaming in through the windshield, his creamy skin was flushed with adrenaline, and his white button-up was unbuttoned just a few times to show off his collarbone.
“Fuck,” you hissed out and hiked your legs up onto the seat so you could give Tom a better view.
“Stop that.”
He said it so forcefully that you froze, fingers hovering over your panties, about to pull them to the side. Then you smiled.
“No.” You went ahead and did it anyway, slipping two fingers inside of yourself easily.
You weren’t one to defy Tom often, especially when it came to what he asked of you in the bedroom, but you knew how crazy it drove him and just couldn’t resist.
Tom groaned, trying and failing to maintain an angry expression. His eyes betrayed an absolutely sinful lust that made you want to melt and you wished more than anything he’d just pull the fucking car over.
“Fuck, Tom,” you gasped, “I wish these were your fingers, you’re so good with your fingers.”
You were still wearing your bra and underwear and as much as you’d love to flash oncoming traffic, you hoped Tom wouldn’t ask you to take them off.
“You can touch yourself,” he said and you complied, knowing it was more of an instruction than an allowance.
It felt good, really good, but you still wished it was him instead of you.
“Fuck, darling you look so beautiful like that, God, I can’t believe I get to marry you.”
“If, you stop, killing people,” you managed to get out through gritted teeth and Tom laughed.
“I’m not going to kill him, love. I made a promise. You’re too important to risk losing, even if he is a fucking prick.”
You whimpered, the mixture of complete head-over-heels love you felt for Tom and pleasure making you crumble.
“Don’t worry, love,” he said, reaching over and taking you by the wrist, stalling your movements just as you were about to fall over the edge. “I’m gonna fuck you so hard you’ll forget you ever met that asshole.”

Yay! My school started yesterday, haha. So I’m kinda short on creative ideas right now, but I’ll try! Maybe Madix picks something up at work and has to go to the bathroom to throw up before his shift is even over. He texts Riley telling him what’s going on but he has to finish his shift because there’s an important patient or something. While Riley waits for Madix to get home, he sets up a nice spot on the couch for his boyfriend to rest and relax. Madix throws up more once he gets home. :)
Dude I had so much fun writing this! Thank you!
The day was almost over, just two more hours and then he could crash. Just 120 more minutes of nausea, burping, and dizziness. Madix felt like he was hearing a patient list off their symptoms to him. Every ailment swirled in his head, but most notably in his stomach. He exhaled deeply through his nose and finished up the last stitching on some poor guy’s forehead. It was sloppy and the man’s breath smelt like week-old tuna, but it was over. It might as well have been karma for breathing in a patient’s face while he most certainly had picked up the bug taking down each member of the ER department one by one.
Madix removed his gloves, and quickly excused himself. His departure felt a bit hasty, especially since his patient was being so appreciative, and towards some expendable resident at that. But he had to leave. He had to get away from the crying children, and the ringing phones, and the general noise that wafted around the emergency room. Don’t get him wrong, Madix’s favourite rotation was trauma and emergency medicine, however he really wished he was further away from the noise today.
Before a new arrival could come wheeling in on a stretcher, Madix made a beeline for the nearest restroom. Thank God it was a single one. He lifted the toilet seat as if to pee, and instead just leaned against the back wall with his head hanging above the bowl. His breath came in quick burst, as he fought back nausea. Nothing happened. He wanted to go home so badly before something did happen. By the way his belly gurgled and tossed around his lunch, he didn’t think he’d get so lucky.
For now, Madix splashed some water on his red cheeks and returned to work. The next half hour of his shift went by in a blur. He couldn’t have guessed how many arterial lines he inserted, or how many lacerations he stitched up, but he could tell you how many times his stomach rolled like an overturned car on the freeway. He could tell you that his temperature rose steadily throughout the day, as did his fear that he’d be seeing a reappearance of his lunch.
Shakily, Madix opened the curtain to greet the next patient. He looked down at his clipboard to familiarize himself with the case, but there was no need. The child’s darkened expression cracked slightly as she saw Madix. Her sunken cheeks perked up ever so slightly upon seeing a familiar face. Madix did not have the same reaction.
“Kiara, what are you doing back here?” Madix sighed, but added a bit of mockery in his tone to cheer the child up. He looked towards Kiara’s mother and kept his voice even. “This is what? The third time you’ve been here in the past two weeks?”
“She’s still throwing up after every meal,” the mother said with her arms crossed. “No one is taking this seriously, Madix.”
It was after the second trip to the ER that the family had started calling Madix by his first name. Even after two visits, the child’s symptoms persisted. Kiara was noticeably weaker this time around. Madix was sure that she had an ulcer, but his attending kept dismissing it as indigestion, or hysteria. Upon hearing that, Madix almost punched his superior. For God’s sake the kid was unable to keep anything down for ten days. This was not made-up or exaggerated.
This time would be different. Madix ordered various tests, determined to get to the bottom of this. He’d done all these tests before and each time there wasn’t a significant fluctuation to warrant concern. Still, Kiara warranted concern.
For a moment, Madix forgot about his own problems. He had a stupid stomach flu, while his patient had something much worse. He shouldn’t have been complaining, but it was hard to ignore the growing nausea. While he waited for the tests to come back, he had every intention of speaking more with Kiara and her mom, but his belly demanded immediate attention. For a second, Madix tried resisting the call, then he gagged, forcing him to cover his mouth with his hand and dash to the bathroom.
He threw open the door and crashed to the ground in front of the toilet. A sick belch gurgled up his throat, followed by a gush of vomit. It landed in the water below with a splash, making droplets fly back in his face. Madix breathed heavily. He wiped his damp face and prayed that it would be one and done.
It wasn’t. He heaved emptily, feeling the organ trying desperately to rid itself of its contents. Madix coughed harshly to get things going. Something in his throat was dislodged and a fresh wave of sick filled his mouth. Hopefully the doors were thick enough and the ER loud enough that no one heard his struggle. He burped up a few thick strands of saliva, and flushed away the mess.
His stomach was killing him, but he wanted to be the one calling the shots. He got to his feet, ignoring the way his insides were swirling, and immediately regretted it. His vision went dark and he lost his balance. He caught himself on the sink. God, he felt disgusting and so not ready to leave the comfort of a nearby toilet.
Madix took his phone out from his pocket. He wasn’t supposed to have it with him, but it was nice to look up some stuff when he ran into uncommon symptoms. This time, he was happy just to see Riley’s face on his lock screen. It was late in the evening; Riley would be home and definitely looking at his phone. Madix succumbed to the temptation and called his boyfriend.
Riley picked up on the first ring. “Madix?”
For a quick second, all Riley could hear was heavy breathing and sniffling. Then Madix’s raspy voice crackled in his ear. “I just threw up.”
“What? Are you okay?” The concern in Riley’s voice was clear, but there was a twinge of relief by the fact that he was hiding behind a phone.
“I’m
” Madix was going to say fine, but couldn’t manage it convincingly, also he really didn’t want to try. “
I’m not doing so great, to be honest.”
“Oh baby, are you coming home?”
Madix squeezed his eyes shut and pretended that Riley was in the small space with him. “I can’t. There’s this little girl. I can’t leave her – I can’t.”
“Mads, you sound terrible. I want you home.”
“I want to be home, but –”
“I know,” Riley said quickly. “Deal with this, and when you get back, I’ll have everything set up for.”
“I don’t know if I can make it the rest of my shift without getting sick again.”
“You can. I know you can,” Riley tried to sound convincing but all he could hear was Madix groaning in pain. “You’re so good, Mads.”
Madix ran his hand through his hair and exhaled deeply. “Okay, I’ll be home soon. I love you.”
“Love you.”
Madix wasn’t sure if that phone call made him more determined to help Kiara, or just more anxious to be home with his boyfriend. Either way, he spat the vile taste of puke into the sink and left.
Reading the results of the tests was a dizzying affair. The numbers blended into one large inkblot in Madix’s vision, and the world around him seemed to slow down. The noises of the ER faded, which would have been nice If Madix wasn’t actively trying to remain upright.
One small bit of hope broke his nausea induced trance – the breath test came back showing signs of a peptic ulcer. This would almost certainly convince his attending to at least do an endoscopy and Madix knew exactly what it would show. Madix only wished it didn’t have to take this long to help Kiara and give her a real diagnosis.
With the good/bad news in hand, Madix returned to where Kiara was waiting. She was lying with her head in her mom’s lap, and didn’t even look up when Madix came in. It was only when he explained the true reason for her sickness, that both the mother and daughter breathed a sigh of relief. Madix did as well, and leaned against the bed for support. He reckoned he looked like shit as he delivered the news. His hands shook as he read the results out loud so that the mother could understand, and ran out of breath by time he finished explaining.
Kiara’s mother put her hand on Madix’s shoulder. “Thank you, Madix, for actually taking us seriously. I do hope your shift is over because you deserve a break.”
She had no idea how badly he needed that break. Madix wanted to stay longer and make sure that everything was sorted out with his attending and Kiara’s treatment, but his rotation was over, and he felt like passing out. With his fist pressed into his mouth, he left in a hurry.
The ride back was as one would expect. Madix struggled to keep his insides
inside. His stomach was back to rebelling against him and threatening to open the flood gates. He didn’t think he had much left to throw up, but his body didn’t seem to have gotten the memo.
As soon as he opened the front door, Madix dropped his bags and happily collapsed into Riley’s waiting arms. His boyfriend was warm and smelt like soap. It was comforting and soft for a moment, then his stomach whined again. He shivered and broke away from his boyfriend.
Riley guided Madix to the couch where there was a pile of blankets, exactly two of favourite pillows, and a glass of water on the coffee table. There was also a bucket on the floor. “How are you feeling?”
“Nauseous.” Madix melted at the sight of the comfy bed Riley had set up. He wanted to fall into the couch, but he froze. With his mouth slightly agape, his tongue became slick with saliva. His hand shook as he covered his mouth. He questioned whether he could make it to the bathroom in time.
Before he could make the decision to run to the toilet, Riley shoved the bucket under his chin and caught the sick that splattered in the basin. Madix’s whole body shook as he lurched forward. He took the bucket in his own hands and turned away from his boyfriend. With strangled noises, he resisted each successive retch, causing his chest to hitch.
Riley stayed behind him and rubbed his back. “Let yourself throw up, Madix. Don’t fight it.”
Madix didn’t need much convincing, mostly because his body took over. He relaxed the muscles in his abdomen, only for them to spasms immediately afterward. He doubled over and vomited up more stomach contents. Each gush of puke gurgled in his throat and landed in the bucket with a sickening splash. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled between heaves and mouthfuls of vomit. “I – I can’t help it.”
Riley lowered Madix to the ground, where he knelt, still with his head shoved in the bucket. “That’s okay, I’m fine. Let it happen.”
In reality, Riley’s hands were shaking just as much as Madix’s were, but he ignored it. He ignored the feeling in his chest telling him to cover his ears and run. He thought that if he told himself he was fine, then he would be fine, and so far, it was working. He focused on rubbing Madix’s back in big circles.
Madix finally got a moment to catch his breath. He felt like he got a proper ab workout, and probably grip strengthening with how hard he was holding onto the bucket. He shut his eyes, still feeling like the room was spinning. “I need to lie down.”
“Are you done throwing up?”
“For now.”
So, Madix practically crawled to the couch. He wrapped himself in the blankets that Riley had made into a nest and closed his eyes. He lay with his head in Riley’s lap while hugging his aching belly. Before falling asleep, he mumbled just loud enough so that Riley would hear him.
“That patient is going to be okay.”
“Good. You’re a good doctor.”
“I’m not a doctor yet.” Madix yawned and started to play with the sweaty collar of his shirt. “There’s vomit on my scrubs.” He pouted.
Riley chuckled, a sound that Madix felt privileged to hear so well. “And it’s not someone else’s this time.”

Mt Goddard, Mt Goethe & Mt Lamarck via Lamarck Col
youtube
When Asaka was pregnant, we agreed that I would be allowed a backpacking trip for every baby book I read. I read “Brain Rules for Baby” by John Medina and promptly reserved a four night permit in Kings Canyon National Park over the July 4th weekend. The rough plan would be to set a base camp at either Evolution Lake or Wanda Lake along the John Muir Trail via Lamarck Col from North Lake. The main objectives of the trip would be Mt Darwin and Mt Goddard, with an emphasis on the latter due to it’s extreme remoteness. I also planned routes on several other peaks so we would have the option for bonus peaks if energy and time permitted. I was lucky enough to find interest and get a commitment from Colin Gregory and Dave Dully, two JMT alumni and backpacking experts. I figured they were the perfect partners for the long haul towards Evolution Basin. I carpooled with Colin from the Bay Area and we met Dully in Bishop. We ate dinner then chose a campsite along Bishop Creek. The next morning we drove to North Lake where our adventure began.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While I had been to North Lake several times, this was my first time heading over Lamarck Col.
Tumblr media
We conversed about mundane topics as we approached Lower Lamarck Lake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While things were going okay for Dully and me, Colin wasn’t feeling so hot. I tried to walk him through a Wim Hof breathing exercise, but it was a poor effort which didn’t seem to help at all. We continued walking and seemingly out of nowhere, Colin began projectile vomiting all over the trail. It was both a magnificent and gross sight. I was speechless. I had never witnessed someone succumb to such terrible altitude sickness at such a low elevation. We were only at 10,600 ft, and we still had to go over Lamarck Col at almost 13,000 ft. It then dawned on me that our trip was in jeopardy, and there was a good chance we would have to head back down to the car. This was nothing new for Colin and Dully, however. Apparently Colin got really sick on the John Muir Trail, and he recovered while on the trail without having to descend. Colin seemed committed to continue, so we resumed hiking against my better judgement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We continued moving, but at a much slower pace. My dreams of making it to Wanda Lake were fading, and I even started to wonder if we would make it down to the Darwin Lakes. There were too many unknown variables, so I just decided enjoy the scenery and hope for the best.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to give credit where credit is due. Colin was fighting some major demons, but he won small battle after small battle.
Tumblr media
During one of our long rests, I noticed a lone figure with a recognizable gait. I said to the guys half jokingly that it looked like Iris, and I wouldn’t even be that surprised if it was really her. As she walked closer, I became more and more sure of my assumption, so I yelled out, “Who are you?” As she stopped to take out her ear earphones, I recognized how awkward of a question that was, so instead I asked if she was Iris, to which she replied yes. As we were catching up, another couple walked by and yelled out, “Are one of you Sean?” My brain slowly analyzed the question, and I realized yes indeed, my name is Sean! It turned out to be Chad Thomas and his fiance. I met Chad on Stuart Point in the desert the previous winter. Iris followed up by asking if he was Michael Graupe’s Chad, to which he replied, “I guess so. I mean I’ve hiked with him a few times.” What a small world these vast mountains truly are. Iris was on her way to Mt Lamarck, and Chad and his fiance were on their way to Darwin Bench, since Chad was chasing the remaining California 13ers he had yet to climb.
Tumblr media
Iris asked Colin if he had any altitude sickness medication. Colin did, but said he hadn’t taken any. Iris quickly responded, “Well that’s not smart.” Direct, but true. Colin didn’t want to take it because he felt it was like taking a performance enhancement drug. While the basis of his reasoning may have had a slight bit of truth, there are no rules forbidding such recreational usage, so I allowed it without giving him too much grief.
Tumblr media
He took the pill and over time things got better. Lamarck Col came into view. From there we would drop several thousand feet, so there was a good chance that we would be alright after all.
Tumblr media
I had studied the col and came equipped with photographs, as I’ve read of people in the past missing it altogether. As we approached, there was an obvious boot track taking us right where we needed to go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were all relieved to finally reach the col, as this was a major milestone. We took a long rest here, and I most likely named every mountain within our viewshed.
Tumblr media
After a healthy break, we started down the col towards Dawin Lakes. I studied the west ridge of Mt Darwin. There was some lingering snow still in the chute which gave me cause for concern. We came prepared with crampons and ice axes, but it still looked precarious.
Tumblr media
I made the wise decision of following the use trail directly down to the first lake, while Colin and Dully took a more diagonal line over rougher terrain. On a map their route looked better, but in practice mine was faster and more efficient.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I beat them down to the lakes and followed the use trail to intercept their soon to be position. I expected a freeway along the side of the lake, but the use trail wasn’t nearly as good as I expected. I found myself talus hopping and scrambling between giant boulders.
Tumblr media
Once we regrouped, we assessed our situation. It was still early in the day, so we agreed to continue towards Evolution Lake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We followed the outlet of Darwin Lakes to Darwin Bench. Mt Goddard and The Hermit came into view for the first time.
Tumblr media
\
We then dropped several hundred feet towards the JMT. Once we reached the JMT, we followed this uphill towards Evolution Lake. I was getting tired, but we were now in the acceptable range of finding a base camp.
Tumblr media
We reached Evolution Lake and the others voiced their intent to set up camp. I wanted to continue at least a mile further. I now had my eyes set on Mt McGee in addition to Mt Goddard, and I felt a base camp at Wanda Lake would be optimal. Colin and Dully were not sold on my proposal, so I tried to find a mid point that would make us all happy, but they would not budge. They were convinced that there were no campsites between the north end of Evolution Lake and Wanda Lake. I lost the vote 2-1, so I had to accept the outcome. At least I was done back packing for the day.
Tumblr media
I set up camp and took a swim in the lake. My mind raced as always, overwhelmed with all the peaks in the nearby area. Tomorrow was very important, as it would be our Mt Goddard summit day, so I focused on the task at hand. We agreed to leave camp the next morning at 7am.
The next morning we finally broke camp at 7:45am. I was a little frustrated with the lake start, but we had a crystal clear forecast and plenty of daylight, so I decided to let it go. We followed the JMT around the eastern shore of the very long Evolution Lake, taking in views of Mt Spencer, Mt Huxley and The Hermit along the way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the south end of the lake we had a iconic river crossing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mt Huxley stood above us as we approached Wanda Lake.
Tumblr media
We reached Wanda Lake after 4 miles. Oh how much nicer it would have been to start from here instead, saving 8 total miles on summit day and possibly giving us the opportunity to climb Mt Huxley as a bonus peak. One of the guys made a comment suggesting that I should have found better hiking partners, which made me feel bad. It was my job as the group leader to push the group to their upmost limits and maximize our chances of success. At no point did I ever want to make anyone feel inadequate.
Tumblr media
We took our first break on the other side of the outlet.
Tumblr media
The remaining route to the summit would be all cross country. We planned to take Starr’s Route, so we aimed for the toe of the rib.
Tumblr media
Down the valley were Davis Lakes and Mt McGee.
Tumblr media
To reach the start of Starr’s Route, we had some steep snow to cross. The snow was soft so we didn’t need to use our crampons nor ice axes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The route is advertised as class 2, but this rating is outdated. The route is definitely class 3, and the very first move on the rocks borders on class 4. This crux can be avoided by climbing up the talus scree on the west side of the rib before transitioning back onto the rib proper. We took on the challenge of the initial stiff move onto the route, and found it within our abilities and comfort levels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next couple hours consisted of class 2-3 climbing with moderate route finding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The climb was mostly fun, but all of us were sucking wind. The altitude was definitely having an effect on our pace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just when it felt like our route was leading to vertical cliffs, a weakness in the rock wall appeared.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The summit was now in sight, and all that remained was a talus slog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We drudged our way up the barren slopes, stopping every few hundred feet or so to suck in the thin air. Reinhold Messner once said, “I am nothing more than a single, narrow, gasping lung, floating over the mists and the summits.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a toilsome effort, we finally made it to the summit.
Tumblr media
After a short rest, we visited the lower west summit. The sky was clear all the way down to the San Joaquin Valley.
Tumblr media
We then returned back to the true summit where we took our official summit rest.
Tumblr media
To the northwest were Goddard Canyon and Mt McGee.
Tumblr media
To the north were Mt Humphreys, Mt Mendel and Mt Darwin.
Tumblr media
To the east were Mt Huxley, Mt Warlow, Mt Agassiz, Mt Winchell and North Palisade.
Tumblr media
To the southeast were Mt Solomons, Black Giant and Charybdis.
Tumblr media
To the south were Scylla, the Ionian Basin and the Enchanted Gorge.
Tumblr media
There was sadly no writing utensil in the summit register, so I wrote my name in Taco Bell hot sauce. Hopefully future readers will think that I signed in my own blood.
Tumblr media
It was getting a bit late in the afternoon, so while I wanted to remain atop the giant, we began our trek back down towards camp.
Tumblr media
My contacts bothered me the whole descent. My contact solution had exploded in my pack, and my contacts were dirty. I had blurry vision the whole descent, which took away from the enjoyment of the hike.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of following Starr’s Route all the way down, we bailed off the western side of the ridge and plunge stepped down the soft snow. Once it was safe, we glissaded a short distance down to the tongue of the snow.
Tumblr media
What followed was a very tedious boulder hop over the small but not negligible saddle towards Wanda Lake and the JMT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once back at Wanda Lake, we took a dip and began our 4 mile march down gradual trail back to camp.
Tumblr media
We spotted a healthy looking coyote along the way. I didn’t know they ventured to such high altitudes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shortly after a big herd of deer ran across our path. Colin and Dully said they saw more wildlife on this trip than over the span of their whole JMT trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It took us over 12 hours from camp to camp, which was much longer than I expected. There were fish jumping left and right, so I took whatever energy I had left and had a go at fishing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had no luck. The fish here were too smart. At least I had first row seats to an amazing alpenglow.
Tumblr media
I started brainstorming what peak we should do the following day. In retrospect, I overthought everything. I should have planned to do the west face of Mt Darwin, but I had better beta from the Darwin Glacier, and I somehow convinced myself it would be easier to move camp and climb Mt Darwin from the other side. This would also allow me to climb Mt Goethe as a side trip while moving camp. The mental gymnastics needed to justify such a plan was remarkable! I willingly gave up my hard earned base camp next to remote peaks in exchange for moving back to more accessible peaks. I could not see my error at the time. Alas, exhaustion, elevation and cognitive dissonance were getting the better of me.
The next morning, we broke down camp and began our move back towards Darwin Bench.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I somehow got ahead of the others, but I welcomed the solitude in such a peaceful and scenic byway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I reached Darwin Bench and saw some fish jumping, so I decided to try my luck. I fought with the mosquitoes, but my perseverance paid off. After a few minutes of fishing I got a bite, and to my pleasant surprise, I caught my first Golden Trout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I released the beauty and continued fishing. I caught my second golden as Colin and Dully arrived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fishing was good so Colin gave it a shot and had he caught some fish as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We packed up our gear and continued alongside the bench. Colin and Dully noticed a super light tent and began fawning over it. They told me this was the same tent that Chad had, so I put two and two together and realized it was probably Chad’s tent. I called out for him, but instead heard Chad’s fiance yell, “Chad not here!” Chad was out climbing peaks while his fiance rested by the bench. I can’t think of a more scenic place to hang out.
Tumblr media
We continued upstream until around 11,500 ft where we dropped our heavy packs among some rocks. We continued north to two large unnamed lakes. Mt Goethe stood above the opposite shore.
Tumblr media
It appeared shorter to go right and hike across the isthmus of the two large lakes, but we soon reached an impasse. A steep snow bank blocked the way. I did not want to encircle the lake, so I committed myself to finding a way across. I noticed a more favorable angle about a hundred feet above the waters edge, so up I climbed.
Tumblr media
I led the way across the steep snow. At first the snow was soft enough to kick steps, but as I crossed, the snow became slightly harder and icier, making the crossing more difficult than I expected. This was the most dangerous part of the whole trip.
Tumblr media
It took a lot of focus, but I eventually made it. Colin and Dully were not willing to give it a try, and opted to take the long route around the lake.
Tumblr media
Looking back, I think we both had the wrong answer. If I had it over again, I would have looked more closely at taking off my shoes and walking across the shallow edge of the lake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I refilled water at the isthmus and watched the two little dots make their way around the deceptively large lake.
Tumblr media
Rather than wait for them, I thought it would be better to get a head start to make sure that the route would work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What remained was a nasty slope. My pace was slow, but my energy levels remained high.
Tumblr media
I was surprised to find myself making distance between the others. Their self-assured mountaineering hubris had been somewhat shattered by the demanding efforts of trip. They began taking really long breaks, and I started to worry that they would bail altogether.
Tumblr media
At this point, all I could do was worry about myself, so I pushed onward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In due time I reached the top. To the northeast were Mt Humphreys and Mt Emerson.
Tumblr media
To the east were Keyhole Plateau and Mt Lamarck.
Tumblr media
To the south were Mt Darwin, Mt Mendel and Mt Goddard.
Tumblr media
To the southwest were Emerald Peak and Evolution Valley.
Tumblr media
To the northwest were Seven Gables and Southern Yosemite.
Tumblr media
To the north were Goethe Lake and the Humphreys Basin.
Tumblr media
I found a good place to lay down and wait for the others. They arrived 30 minutes later in seemingly good spirits.
Tumblr media
We flipped through the summit register, finding humor in Daryn’s log.
Tumblr media
Rather than return the way we came, we headed south from the summit, aiming for the western edge of Lake 11540.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mt Goddard looked a long ways away.
Tumblr media
We followed the ridge past a lingering snow bank and took sandy slopes down to the lake below. Somewhere along our descent, the others informed me of their desire to skip Mt Darwin the next day. I was disappointed, but felt like I could change their mind after a swim and a good rest at camp.
Tumblr media
I got ahead of the others and found myself on some wet class 3. It wasn’t the best route, and thankfully the others didn’t follow me, choosing a much better class 2 route further right of my descent path.
Tumblr media
I spotted the others on their better route and aimed to meet them at the shore of the lake. They had left some trekking poles along the shore and hoped to recover them.
Tumblr media
What a scenic location! Mt Goddard spied us from a distance.
Tumblr media
The conditions were too nice to pass up a swim. With a fish caught and a summit under my belt already, all I needed was a dunk to complete my second ever triple crown.
Tumblr media
We dried off and continued our walk around the lake. We were surprised when a couple crossed our path, and even more surprised to discover it was Chad and his fiance. It was a pretty obscure and remote location, and they were equally surprised to see us. They were on their way to Keyhole Plateau. In an effort to bolster confidence in the others, I asked him to tell us about his experience on Darwin. This strategy somehow backfired, and he described a dangerous route where ropes were needed. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, considering every other person I asked about the peak said the class 5 rating was grossly exaggerated. Chad realized his mistake after the fact, and sent an email apologizing for his severe critique of the route. While his frightful experience was most likely due to him taking the wrong route, the damage was done, and there was now nothing I could do to convince the others. We said goodbye, and continued our way around the outlet of the lake back towards to our packs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent the rest of the afternoon running through different scenarios in my head, but the decision was simple. I either had to climb Mt Darwin solo, or cut the trip short and head back with the others. We got back to our packs and continued towards the Darwin Lakes.
Tumblr media
With a lot of daylight left, I wanted to camp at the easternmost lake, as this would make our final day easier, but the others found a couple nice spots that they didn’t want to pass up. I lost the vote once again, so we settled beneath the northern face of Mt Gould. It was a marmot paradise.
Tumblr media
I have to admit that I was pretty tired myself. The longer I thought about it, the more I leaned towards cutting the trip short. I started to miss Asaka and Leif. The easy way out became more and more appealing. I decided to hike out with the others, so long as we could tag Mt Lamarck on the way out.
Tumblr media
The next morning we began the dreaded march towards Lamarck Col. I spied some huge trout in the water below. I stopped to try my luck but didn’t get a bite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took my time up to the col. Every now and then I would look back enviously at Mt Darwin. We were so close to the peak and the FOMO was killing me inside. I began documenting several possible camp sites for a return trip. Perhaps I could even do it as a day hike during the Sierra Challenge the next month.
Tumblr media
We reached the pass where I was able to get service for the first time in days. I sent a text to Asaka telling her I was alright.
Tumblr media
We dropped our heavy packs and began up the ridgeline towards Lamarck Peak.
Tumblr media
While this peak can be attained via a class 2 route just below the south side of the ridge, I felt inclined to challenge myself and take a more direct and challenging route.
Tumblr media
I found a keyhole that got me through an impasse, and challenged the others to do the same.
Tumblr media
Dully took my challenge head on and found an alternative way up the granite wall.
Tumblr media
The next challenge was a boulder problem along the ridge. Dully again answered the call.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where was all this enthusiasm earlier? We could have easily climbed Mt Darwin with this newly ascertained zeal. The final distance to the peak was an easy walk up, and we soon found ourselves on the summit. To the north was Mt Humphreys.
Tumblr media
To the east were Upper Lamarck Lake and Owens Valley.
Tumblr media
To the southeast were Cloudripper, Mt Agassiz, North Palisade and Split Mountain.
Tumblr media
To the south were Mt Darwin and Mt Mendel.
Tumblr media
To the west was the higher north peak. The others were interested in bagging this bonus peak as well, so we signed the summit register and continued on to the next objective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The top was easily attained.
Tumblr media
We had enough juice to go for the west summit, which was a sub peak but a fine objective.
Tumblr media
Getting to the base of it was easy and we were rewarded with some fun class 4 scrambling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dully championed up the pitch and conquered the summit fin, while Colin felt the exposure was too rich for his blood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We traversed from the west summit back to the col.
Tumblr media
We stopped along the way to practice our scrambling. I was a little overconfident and inadvertently found myself on stiff class 4 and possibly even low class 5.
Tumblr media
I almost bit off a little more than I could chew, so I very carefully made my way back down. Lesson learned, I suppose.
Tumblr media
We shouldered our packs once more and began the short but steep hike down to North Lake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I began having trouble on my descent and started to overheat. I was out of water and the nearest respite was Lower Lamarck Lake. I toiled down the sunny trail, a little bit concerned for my well being.
Tumblr media
My death march ended with a nice swim at the outlook of Lower Lamarck Lake. Colin caught a fish, but I came up empty handed.
Tumblr media
I was able to keep cool enough for the rest of the hike out. I enjoyed the green aspen leaves quaking in the breeze.
Tumblr media
Once back at the car, we drove to the Whoa Nelly Deli for a well deserved meal. While I didn’t get every peak I wanted, I got the most important one in Mt Goddard. That peak deserves a “Tough Bastard” designation. I was now one step closer to completing the Sierra Emblem List.

Room 13-13 might be bad luck
Or maybe the people who stayed in it just had a tendency to come down with a bad case of legionnaires or tetanus after staying in a place like this.
Rick crinkled his nose in disgust as the door swung open, it’s rusted hinges squeaking in protest. The carpets were ruined and a little soggy underfoot, the mold spore content in the air was so thick he could taste it, the peeling wallpaper hung limply like it was weighed down with moisture

The room truly screamed misery. It reminded Rick a little too much of the dismal conditions of his and Rickley’s old jail cell for comfort. The thin mattress, the blood stains splattered across the wall, the vague smell of death — Ugh. The only thing that broke the illusion of imprisonment was a small cracked window with broken shades that lit up the room every time lightening flashed outside.
Well. Home sweet home. Beggars couldn’t be choosers, he supposed.
Visibly tired Rick plopped down heavily on the edge of the sad excuse for a bed next to Rickley, doubling over and resting his face in his hands. “I-I don’t know, Rickley. I don’t know.”
What were they going to do? Rickley knew just as well as he did that they didn’t have a plan. They didn’t have a single cent to their names. They didn’t even have a clue where they were, or how far they were from the distant mountains far away from the accursed beach, or what the hell was even going on.
“M-maybe he just wants to shoot us. I dunno.” Rick grumbled darkly, heaving a shaky sigh. He found the strength to lift his head, but he couldn’t bear to look Rickley in the eye. He didn’t want him to see how dead and listless he felt on the inside.
“But - but maybe it won’t matter. I died today, R-Rickley. I
I-I watched you die.” Horrifically, painfully, on that fateful night on the bloodied freeway littered with carnage. Rick rubbed the back of his neck, wincing at the memory. “Maybe w-we’ll just wake up somewhere else again.”
He ran a hand through his hair, which was still wet from the rain they’d been caught in. He was so, so tired. The black circles beneath his eyes were evidence of that much. And his shoulder still ached

“I-I’ll figure something out. Don’t worry,” he assured. It was his duty to keep Rickley from getting too upset, after all. The poor guy just couldn’t handle the twists and turns their lives were being put through. Not that he was doing a great job, either. “For now, l-let’s just wash up and get some slee- eeeEEEEAAAAH W-W-WHAT IS THAT?!”
Rick’s voice suddenly went high with shrill alarm, and he pulled his legs off of the floor like something had just bitten him. He desperately scrambled back on the threadbare bed, nearly falling off the back of it in the process. “Ohmygod g-g-get it AWAY!”
On the floor, crawling out from under the bed frame was
A small black lizard. It flicked its tongue innocently, scurrying across the floor like one would expect a cockroach to do.
“K-kill it! KILL it, R-Rickley!”
Dream State...

KornZombieMoment-pocalypse
Growing up, I had that rebel phase. It wasn’t even really a rebel phase, per se, but more of a “I enjoy rock” kinda phase. I got into Korn. I started out with Life is Peachy in 96, followed by Follow the Leader in 98. I enjoyed every album, and really “socked it to the man” by playing it at volume 100 in my tiny bedroom in my parents house.
Fast forward to now. I’m old, (okay, 32, but who’s counting) and I’ve got a family. I don’t get crazy anymore. Crazy for me is when I stay up past 10pm. Anyyyyyyways. One warm night in early 2016, I had a brilliant idea. I happened to see that Korn was doing a tour with Rob Zombie and In This Moment. And they were coming to a nearby hood. And tickets were within my broke ass budget.
Omg.
I threw the idea to my main squeeze, M-dawg and his man BFF, G-man (who happens to be H’s main squeeze from none other than Thezebitches). They loved it. I asked H, and she was in. Tickets were bought. Children were heaved onto other caregivers. Plans were made. It was on. On. Like. Donkey. Kong.
The concert was at a now defunct outdoor amphitheater about 2 hours away at a peak traffic time. The four of us (me, H, M-dawg and G-man) left about 5 hours before the concert, gleefully happy and listening to a custom playlist, hoping that with traffic, we would be somewhat on time. Nope. We weren’t.
After fighting what felt like every vehicle in the good ole’ US of A on the road in traffic, we stopped for some grub at the nearby Wendy’s. We ate excitedly, and headed towards the venue. Keep Wendy’s in mind. It plays a big role in the evening.
We get to the venue, and park in our “premiere” parking. Heading to the entrance we notice the longest lines. Ever. We had our blankets ready- this was an outdoor venue after all- and we wanted in. That’s when our bubble was first burst- the cranky security person yelled at us that no blankets were allowed. Fine. Be that way. After running back to the car to put the blankets away, we continued to wait. Standing in one of the lines, we happen to notice a line for specific car owners- if you showed your keys, you got in faster. Sa-weeeeet. It just so happened that H and G-man have the car they were looking for. Heading to that line, we didn’t even need to show the keys- we were frisked and let right in. Looking back, that probably should have been our first clue.
Upon entry, we heard In This Moment playing their first song. We hurriedly got two drinks each, and trekked to our grassy knoll and got good seats. It was awesome!! We were sitting (key word here- sitting) amongst fellow music lovers, we had our drinks, and we really enjoyed the set. Up next was Rob Zombie, and I decided in between sets I was going to use the restrooms.
I calmly walk up the little hill we were sitting on, alone, and go to the restroom. It was still daylight outside- about dusk. There was a line, so it took me about 20 minutes. I heard Rob Zombie start up, and I wasn’t too concerned. I, myself, am not a huge Zombie fan- I was there for Korn and In This Moment so I wasn’t too upset I was missing the first song. After washing my hands, I calmly left the restroom and went to head back to our spot.
Do any of you remember the Watts Riots? I was young, but I sure remember the chaos. After walking back to the grassy knoll, it looked like the Watts Riots. It was dark. People were everywhere. Chaos ensued. There were three mosh pits happening. I didn’t know where everyone was. I couldn’t believe my fucking eyes. What the hell?!
I walked to where I thought everyone was. I was wrong. Instead, I was being pushed around by a man, and the group of shall we say angry white men with grudges against anyone with a tan that was next to me had a reallllll problem with it. They pulled me into their circle, and let the man pushing me know that it was unacceptable to be pushing a lady. In so many words.
I thanked them, got lost some more, and finally, H called me. Neither one of us could see over the crowds. I kept telling her I was by the mosh pit, but we were at the WRONG mosh pit. I gave up and went to higher ground- I mean that’s what you’re supposed to do in a disaster situation, right?? I’ve watched enough Dual Survivor to take a shot at surviving.
M-dawg called me, located me, and then led me through the apocalypse to our spot, which was now being taken over by someone lighting a shirt on FIRE and swinging it over his head. At that point, I think we all realized that help wasn’t coming, and we were only halfway through Zombie. Good. Lord.
Korn can be summed up like this. People were pushing and stomping other people. H socked a dude in the face because of it. Moshing was happening in the most chaotic way. I was smashed into a railing. G-man and M-dawg got into a fistfight (the guy lost) which consisted of M-dawg holding a guy in a headlock, G-man had his leg immobilized, and H had ripped a piece of his sweaty shirt off and was slapping him in the face with it. I stomped someone’s body part whilst yelling “I. JUST. WANTED. TO. WATCH. KORN!!!!” Probably not my finest moment. There was so much beer drunk amongst H, M-dawg, and G-man because some sucker kept buying them drinks. I watched a dude grab a girls cell phone and throw it like he was a third baseman for the Dodgers into the crowd below, knocking someone in the head. SO. MUCH. FIRE. I honestly thought a huge brush fire was going to start. There was not a moment of peace. It was literally survive or be stomped. Where was security, you ask?
Good question.
We left early, mostly because physically we couldn’t handle it, and also because of the crowds swarming the exit. In the bathroom on the way out there was a poor girl with a gash across her face. Chaos. It was at the exit that we noticed security and police. Umm. Yes, Mr Officer. You are certainly most helpful yards away from the surging crowd of angst and fury.
Sitting in the parking lot, waiting for the crowd to leave, we assess the situation. G-man has a torn shirt, we all have various injuries, but we all made it out alive. After about 45 minutes of waiting, we left. I drove, M-dawg was next to me, H was behind him, and G-man was behind me.
Remember I told you to remember Wendy’s? That’s because what happened next was what I affectionately refer to as “The Wendy’s Incident”. Not too long into our drive, G-man thought he had to burp. I had already asked if he wanted me to stop, because I could tell he was feeling the effects of the free beer train he had earlier. He said no, so when he burped, it wasn’t a burp. Projectile vomit landed on me, landed on my seat, in my hair, and started rolling down my back. This wasn’t any vomit. No. It was partially digested Spicy Chicken Cesar Salad and lots, and lots of beer.
I immediately pull off the freeway, not giving a shit that we are in the shadiest of shady areas. I pull into a Sevvie, and buy cleaning products and Febreeze.
While my car is being cleaned, it turns out that the 7-11 guy called the cops on us, cuz you know, were suspicious. They roll up, saying “oh you’re pretty far from (insert my anonymous town name here)”. Uh. Yeah. So I saunter up, and being the sweet talker I am, reassure them that it’s just vomit being cleaned from my car so vigorously and not blood, I’m not dealing drugs or murdering my friends, and they slowly, slowly drive away.
We ended up home, much later than anticipated. A year later, we still aren’t over this experience.
Guess what? Korn is coming back this year.

[RF] Day At the Office
It’s 6:30 on a Friday morning as Chris parks his weathered ’05 Camry in the parking lot out side of the Regalia building. He had just finished acquiring his bachelors degree in accounting at the University of Florida, and similar to many college graduates he faces a tremendous amount of student loan debt. The fear of not paying off this debt quickly is what’s likely to have pushed him to accept the lower paying position as an auditor at the Rawlinson and Hunter firm in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. Given that this is his first year on the job he spends most of his time ‘ticking’ which is a process that involves taking a list of invoices on a spreadsheet and fact checking them with documents provided by the firm’s clients. This wasn’t a job he envisioned for himself in high school; however, the view from his cubicle on the 38th floor made things manageable. Chris steps out of his car and walks by a couple co-workers as they glance out toward the morning sun.
“Is that a whale that on the beach?” one of them asked. Chris turned around and saw the man pointing across toward the beach at what looked like a blue two ton bag of trash. Chris, now intrigued by the opportunity to see a whale up close, decided to walk across the street in an attempt to get a better look. He untied his dress shoes and took off his long socks and felt the cold morning sand fill the crevasses between his toes with each step that he took. He quickly saw that the whale was alive and struggling to breath as water slowly leaked out of it’s blow-hole. Chris walked up to the whale and placed his hand on the whales slimy rubbery skin. He took in how massive this creature was as he looked in the whale’s eye that was twice the size of Chris’s head. “Hang in there buddy, I am sure help is on the way.” As much as he wanted to help this whale, he knew that there was nothing he could do by himself. He crossed back across the street, walked between two joggers, and headed toward the Regalia building. The grains of sand scrapped against his feet as he attempted to wipe it off and put his shoes and socks back on. Chris didn’t have time to think about what was to become of this helpless whale as quarterlies were coming up and he knew that his boss would have a mountain of paperwork waiting for him. Clearing his head of completely of the whale, he walked through the glass doors and waited for the elevator.
As soon as the elevator doors opened on his floor the window toward the east side of the building allowed Chris to see the glowing morning sun rising above the somber Atlantic ocean. Seagulls can be seen circling above and there isn’t a cloud that could be spotted along the warm golden horizon. He sits down at his desk, not acknowledging the daunting amount of papers loaded into the “In” box. He types in his assigned username and password to log into the companies computer and checks his email as usual. There is an email from his supervisor that reads, “Chris, we need you to prepare a final report by this Monday that ensures our firms compliance with internal control procedures and regulations for the upcoming contract with Ernst&Young. This will look very good for your future here if you succeed with this report, so I suggest that you put in every hour you can to assure excellence. My secretary has already supplied you with the documents that you will need.”
Chris lets out a sigh as he glances to his left and accepts the existence of the two foot stack of papers that will certainly keep him here for the weekend. He hates how his work load premonitions from earlier were spot on. Just as he is about to start work on the papers he is distracted by his cubicle mate, Henry, that is ducking under the maze of canvas walls as to not be seen by the floor supervisor.
“Hey, Chris, Jack didn’t come by looking for me right? He said if I came in late one more time that my ass would get canned” Henry shamelessly explained. Chris was repulsed by Henry’s breath which smelled like aged whiskey from the night prior, and hated that it would be the fragrance in their cubicle for the rest of the morning.
“I haven’t seen him since I got in, but you could maybe put the bottle down a little earlier so you can show up on time,” Chris stated.
“Well thanks, Mom, but I actually did not have a drink last night. A crazy accident on interstate 95 had me stuck in bumper to bumper traffic.” Henry stated this lie as if Chris and a majority of other employee’s did not take this freeway to work. “Man, does the boss plan on keeping you all weekend with those papers? When I have extra time today, I’ll help you get through a couple of those documents as a means of paying you back for covering my ass in the past.”
“That would be great, but by the looks of it I am going to be one of the poor suckers sentenced here for the weekend, regardless of the extra help you give me today,” Chris said begrudgingly. Further, Chris knew that Henry barely finishes his own daily tasks, no matter how insignificant, and had little faith that he would keep his promise. As such, Chris turned to face his computer and began working diligently.
Chris noticed the glare from the morning sun that normally inhibits his view of a photograph he has sitting on top of his cubicle wall has vanished as the sun rises high into the afternoon sky. He hardly noticed the time pass as he was lost in his work, but this picture was able to break his attention from the endless stack of papers. This photo is more important to Chris today than any other typical day, because this Friday marks the one-year anniversary of his mother being cancer free for the second time in the past four years. The photo is of his father, family, and friends that stand joyfully around his mother after receiving the news that her multiple myeloma had gone into remission. He remembers the love and support his mother had at the beginning of her seemingly hopeless battle against cancer. Shortly after she broke the news of her diagnosis to social media, prayer after prayer were posted on her Facebook wall. Chris felt hope for his mother when he read those posts from distant family members and strangers and assumed that it was the one thing that kept his mother as positive as she was during the first few months of therapy. Lost in thought from the photo, Chris comes back to reality as his phone starts ringing. He recognizes the number as his Fathers, who Chris hasn’t seen in over six months, and picks up the phone reluctantly expecting a lecture on how he should visit his Mother more frequently.
“Chris? It’s Dad.” Chris could hear the sadness escape through his Father’s voice. “Your Mother’s cancer has returned yet again and she will be starting her third round of chemotherapy next week.” Chris recalls the first time his Mother told him she had been diagnosed with cancer. They were walking through Monte Sano State park near his hometown in Huntsville Alabama. They had climbed to the top of the mountain in mid September to reach a viewing point that he appreciated more than any morning sun rising above any somber ocean. The tree tops that covered the hills were a variety of yellow, brown, and amber colors as the leaves were about to fall from the tree for the winter months. His mother explained to him here that just as the trees will lose their leaves and appear deathly in the winter, so will she during the next upcoming months when she undergoes chemotherapy. He remembers her assurance when she told him that just as the trees leaves would return in the spring time, so would her liveliness after treatment. At that time neither Chris nor she imagined that she would have to prepare for the winter months two more times after her cancer would leave remission.
“Chris, are you still there?” Chris realized he had tuned out the conversation with his father. He assumed that his father asked when the next time Chris would plan to visit them.
“Work needs me here for the weekend to finish up a report and next weekend I have got a doctor’s appointment, so I don’t think I will be able to make it to her first session,” Chris hesitantly stated, not sure if his Dad would pick up on the lie about the non-existent Doctors appointment.
“Well, just try and make it out sooner rather than later if you can. Your mother needs all the support she can get this time.” Chris heard how disappointed his father was. Chris looks up from his cubicle checking for his supervisors as personal calls are not allowed at work, when he sees a couple of employees crowding around the window facing the beach.
“I will be there Dad. She has gotten through this two times before, so we know that she is a fighter and can put her cancer back into remission. I’m sorry, but now I’ve got to go now. I will see you soon.” Chris exclaims as he rests the phone on the hook in the middle of his Dad’s reply. Chris’s curiosity about the commotion surrounding the window compels him to take a break from work and walk toward the window. He walks up to the window and looks down at the beach to see the same 40 foot sperm whale that had washed up on shore earlier this morning. The two joggers he walked by on the way to work could be seen taking selfies with the helpless whale, without appearing to have the slightest inclination to try and help get this whale back into the ocean. Chris’s coworkers explained their distaste in the decisions these guys made to only take pictures with the whale, however, Chris did not blame the two guys for their lack of effort because two men surely could not take on the insurmountable task of rescuing a whale by themselves. Naturally, a crowd, similar to the one on the 38th floor, had formed within minutes by other various bystanders on the beach. Within a matter of minutes the beached whale was surrounded by hundreds of people and now it seemed that things were more hopeful for the whales survival.
Unfortunately, the supervisor noticed the lack of working employees and instructed everyone to get back to work stating, “You all shouldn’t be so infatuated with a whale that washed up on shore. Not all the manpower in the world could save its life if it isn’t dead already.” Chris found his complete lack of optimism distasteful, but still walked back to his cubicle to put a dent in his massive work load. He heard the whispers through the thin canvas walls of the other employees talking about the status of the whale. They were like pubescent kids in middle school, passing notes after the teacher instated a strictly no-talking rule. This whale was inadvertently demanding Chris’s attention, no matter how many times he tried to ignore it. Chris feels a ball of paper reflect off of his back and assumes that Henry is trying to get his attention again, so he turns around slowly.
“Get this dude, #SaveTheSunnyIslesWhale is the most trending tweet in the area,” Henry stated enthusiastically. Chris remembers how his Mom’s treatment support page on Facebook had hundreds of people posting on it and joining the group after a local B-listed celebrity pledged her support for my mother.
“Ya, people sure do like to come together and give their support when others are watching,” Chris said. He toned out the gossip around the whale and focused on his report. Shortly after, the news on the TV in the break room broke his concentration. Again, the whale was distracting him from finishing the mountain of paper work to be completed by this weekend. He had more pertinent tasks to attend to rather than focusing on this helpless whale, however, he noticed that it was 3:15 and everyone was on their last break for the work day. He decided that he could use a break from his work and walked into the break room to see the local news, CBS Miami, on the TV. All of his co-workers surrounded the TV and appeared to be infatuated with the status of this whale. The headline underneath the reporter on scene read, “ Beached Whale Still Alive and Breathing.”
“How can a whale be breathing above water?” asked an employee who’s eyes were practically glued to the TV.
“Whales are mammals they breath air,” Chris shouts from the back of the break room. He was embarrassed by the fact he just quoted a documentary he watched about whales one lonely Saturday night in his apartment.
The reporter continues, “The around the clock work of all the people at the beach have extended the whale’s life by a few hours as they are able to supply a constant supply of cool water to the Whale’s skin. Furthermore, the generous donations of large packs of ice from the local ice cream and smoothie shops are being laid on top of the whale to keep it from over heating, but if crane operators are unable to move the whale back into the ocean then it will be crushed by its own massive weight.” Chris views these business providing their support as a free advertisement opportunity rather than compassion for the helpless animal. He remembers the various consultations that his mom had when she was entering her chemo treatment for the second time last year. The doctors approached her with a new experimental procedure that seemed promising for patients who had under gone remission before. Chris wonders if those doctors actually cared about his mom or if they just wanted to collect the check from the pharmaceutical company to get their new drug out to as many patients as possible.
Chris leaves the break room as the insurmountable amount of paperwork he will have to complete this weekend does not allow him to worry about a dying whale or free ice cream advertisements. He reaches his cubicle and sees that Henry had not even touched a single document, not surprisingly. The fact that there is only one hour left in the work day, leads Chris to realize he will be completing this report on his own as he originally thought.
People start packing up their stuff and head out of the office as the work day comes to an end at five o’clock. Chris notices the office morale has dropped significantly for the stranded whale in the few hours between his break and the end of the day as the soft whispers amongst coworkers can no longer be heard through the canvas walls, but only the sound of Henry’s computer shutting off could reach a decibel Chris’s ears could register.
“Well, Chris, it’s five so I am leaving for the night. Apparently a marine biologist who was on scene condemned the reporter’s praise for people pouring water on the whale as they were only prolonging its inevitable death. This was after the crane worker in the area refused to work unpaid over time to save a whales life,” Henry said.
“Well, our tax dollars don’t pay crane workers to care about whales. Have a good weekend man. Try and not drink too much.”
“Hey, some one has got to drink for you if you won’t ever have one,” Henry said. Chris did not really understand Henry’s logic in that statement, but chose not to reply in fear of prolonging this conversation he did not want to have in the first place. However, Henry’s update on the whale caused Chris to recall another memory of his mother after her cancer had gone into remission for the second time. The doctors explained callously that with each successive round of chemotherapy her quality of life would only diminish. Multiple myeloma is a cancer that requires successive chemotherapy treatments and as such, his mother’s quality of life certainly would have been better without the life draining chemotherapy treatments. He questioned his family’s true motives, wondering if they encouraged her to keep pushing through treatments for her quantity of life, or if it really was the right thing to do for her quality of life. Of course, no one who supported a loved one battling cancer would admit to that feeling being true, but it was obvious to Chris this was the thought his coworkers had for the stranded whale. The people had the right intentions in helping the whale, however, all they wound up doing was prolonging its inevitable death. This whales predicament has officially stolen Chris’s focus and he could no longer work with these thoughts of quantity vs quality racing through his head and decided to call it a night at eight o’clock.
Chris exits the building from the east side entrance so he can walk past the whale that has managed to remain on his mind throughout the day. He unties his shoes and removes his socks again before stepping onto the evening sand. It was much cooler than this morning. The cool breeze graces Chris’s face that brings out an odd feeling of serenity. Every one has left the whale alone in the cold sand as it takes its final few breaths. Chris extends his hand out toward the whale and caresses its now dry skin. The whales massive eye remains closed and the blow-hole is no longer leaking any water. The tears in the whales skin from the seagulls releases an odor that makes Chris’s stomach twist in nots. This whale never stood a chance when mother nature mistakenly washed up on shore, Chris thought to himself. Saving the whale seemed so infeasible, but now that it is at the last moments of it’s life Chris can only wish that he did more to help earlier this morning. He thinks how much easier it is to ignore problems as insurmountable as this whale, instead accepting the entire weight of the problem solely on his shoulders. He covers his noes with his shirt and whispers somberly, “Just let go, be free from this suffering.” He walks away from the whale thinking about his Mother, and the phone call that he had earlier with his Dad about her possibly entering her third round of treatment. He cringes when he thinks if his mom would be better off freed from her cancer rather than prolonging the inevitable outcome. His stomach twists even more from this thought even entering his head.
The next day, Chris walks into the office early Saturday and sees the handful of co-workers that were unfortunate enough to be sentenced with weekend tasks. Every one is focused at their desk, and Chris does not hear the slightest mention of the whale from yesterday. The TV in the break room could be heard faintly as Chris walks past it; however, Chris only heard the usual reporting of politics and economics. Chris glances out the now empty window that was crowded a mere 24 hours ago and sees the lifeless whale resting in front of the somber ocean. The morning sun rose behind the whale casting a shadow upon the birds that were picking at it’s fat as men threw ropes around her lifeless body. Chris assumed the ropes were attached to the boat 50 feet off shore and would drag her out to sea instead of letting it rot out in the sand.
Chris walks back to his desk and grabs his picture of his mother. He looks at the family and friends surrounding her after her news of remission and thinks how much more positive this picture will be compared to the one that would be taken next week when only his Dad is by her side as she enters her third cycle of the life draining chemotherapy treatment. He reflects on the fact that he has not visited his parents in months because he was drained from giving his mother constant support, and could not stand to see her lose the battle. He felt like the people who had given up on the whale after all their failed attempts at rescue. However, Chris does not want his mother to be alone as he saw the whale last night and this causes him to buy a train ticket to Huntsville, Alabama for next weekend. He just wants to be by his mother’s side, giving her his full support as she takes on this battle for the third time. He does not know what her outcome will be this time around, but he knows it will be better if she is surrounded by her family than if she were to be left alone.

How much should I charge for tutoring?
I'm a senior in high school with over a 4.0 weighted average, and I'm thinking about doing some tutoring work for money, since no local businesses are hiring and I need to start paying car insurance soon, since I'll be driving. I'm wondering what to charge per session, and how long a session should last. I've figured out that I can tutor any subject for levels K-8, along with HS level Biology and Chemistry. Alternatively, for levels K-6, I'm willing to offer general homework help. I have some experience - I tutored someone who was failing two to four hours per week last year in HS Chemistry, and she ended up passing the course, including her NYS Regents Exam, which many people failed. From what I've seen, tutors around here make anywhere from $10 to $40, at my level of education. Is $10-15 unreasonable for a general homework help session? How does $20 sound for levels 7&8 math, or HS subjects? Is this too much? Too little? Could I make it work?""

How much does US health insurance cost per year?
I am considering moving with my wife and kids to Michigan for a year as part of my degree. I have a number of questions, mainly about health insurance. 1. Will my wife and I still be considered married? If not, will that affect the way we buy insurance/are treated at the hospital? 2. She is very active, with slight asthma and bad PCOS. How much (roughly) would health insurance be for her for one year? 3. I am wheelchair dependent and suffer from epilepsy. How much (really roughly) would my health insurance cost? 4. Do I buy separate health insurance for my children (aged 17 months, 1 month and 1 month)? 5. My eldest child appears to be struggling with leg movement and we are considering the possibility that she may have inherited my condition. Will treatment and tests be covered by the insurance, even though we have an idea of what it might be before buying the insurance? I know these must sound like obvious questions to US citizens, but we are not a particularly rich family, so we need to make sure that there are no big bills hiding around the corner! Thank you""

What is the best UK car insurance for me to get?
Ok, i'm a little confused here. Basically my insurance expires in a few days and i'm coming up to 4 years no claims. I've never protected these claims (obviously as you cannot protect less than four years) and on my renewal i've come to a dilemma; 1) I have got a fairly cheap quote which includes courtesy car, legal cover and windscreen cover (this is cheaper offer but doesn't offer protected no claims). or 2) courtesy car, protected no claims and windscreen cover (this is a little more expensive but doesn't have legal cover). Now my question is (since I don't know much about car insurance, i just know its a law), how important is legal cover? i'm assuming its very important but for the last four years i've never had any claims or been in any accidents, and i really want to start protecting my claims since my car is kind of old now and i'm worried about losing the last 4 years, any tips or advice? oh this is on comprehensive by the way. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.""

Appropriate and affordable health insurance for my autistic son?
Here is the situation: My son is seven and severely autistic. He lives with his mom (we are divorced). As part of our agreement, I take care of his health insurance and medical bills, co-pays and things related to his medical care. I pay for insurance for him thru my employer, around $280 a month, just for him. However, although it is pretty good for office visits, it is really bad for hospital. Because he is autistic, he has to be knocked out for some procedures that he wouldn't normally be knocked out for. Recently he incurred a $9000 bill, which the insurance company wont pay because he already maxed out his hospital indemnity for the year. I feel that the time has come to provide him with some sort of hospital indemnity, but I can't find any that I can actually afford. I don't make very much, I make enough to pay his regular health insurance and his child support, and the occasional doctor bill. But I don't make enough to pay the huge premiums that a regular hospital indemnity plan has. To add another wrinkle, I live in New York, he lives with his mom in Connecticut, she is the one who brings him to the doctor/hospital, I'm just the one who pays for it, which I am happy to do. But the problem is, that anything available with NY, only covers providers in NY. CT wont work with me because i do not live there. Am I screwed (as in I have to pay 900 per month in hospital insurance), or is there something I can do? By the way, I make about $36000 per year, not a lot for New York. I just want to provide the best care for my son, but I need something I can actually afford""

How much is insurance for under ground pools?
How much is motorcycle insurance compared to auto insurance?
I'm 19 years old and have have been driving for over 2 years with my dads car using secondary insurance. Last year I really got into motorcycles and after riding a couple on back roads, I want to get one this year. I like the look and feel of an older motorcycle. I want to get something from the 80's. So far my most favourite bike I've ridden is a 1979 Honda with a 125 motor I believe. I don't care for speed, I like cruising. I'm more into chrome and chopperish feel. I'm a full time college student and I found that they offer motorcycle driving training there in the summer. Since I'm a student I will get a good discount. On top of that the parking at school for motorcycles is only $20 a month whereas I pay $7 a day for car parking. I live in Ontario, Canada which probably has the highest rates in the country. I currently pay $100/month for secondary. It used to be $150 but since I've proven to be accident free, they brought it down for me. Primary car insurance on the other hand is more like $300 or more per month for me. So do I have a good case here? 1. Older bike which won't need full coverage 2. I own the bike 3. Parked in a private underground garage at home 4. Parked in a private, security controlled lot at school 5. Question about auto insurance claim pay?
Someone I know got into an auto accident (backed into a parked car). Both parties are insured. The guy I know filed an insurance claim and they find him 100% at fault (duh), but the insurer will not give him any money as a result of this. I've never had to file any auto claims in all my time driving (thankfully), so I don't know as to whether what happened is what's supposed to happen. If you're 100% at fault, is it standard for insurers to give no payout at all? I don't know the terms of this guy's insurance policy (told me he uses farmer's insurance, if that matters, not Geico or some other budget insurer), but I thought the purpose of insurance is to cover yourself in the event of accidents, whether you're at fault or not. Should I tell him to appeal, or something, or is the insurance company 100% justified in their decision?""

How does motorcycle insurance work?
So I just wanted to know a little about the pay brackets with motorcycle. Im not talking specific numbers cause I know to just get a quota for that. What I heard is for things like scooters or bikes under 150cc there is a bracket. Then it goes up for anything between 150cc to less than 400cc. Then after that you can expect insurance to go up more when you get into the 600cc supersports and so on. I know im wording this kind of poorly. It makes sense just like how insurance for a Ferrari is going to more than a pickup truck or economy car. I just remember someone saying on a forum that they got a ninja 400r and they were happy that its technically a 399cc engine bucause if it was just a bit more the insurance would have gone up to the next class in motorcycle insurance. I just wanted to know if someone can help explain how this works. I wouldnt mind having something stronger than a 250 or 300 motorcycle but if it means that insurance is going to double or something for a 600 or 650 then I may stray away from it because I still have insurance for my car. Also on a side note how exactly does super sport insurance typically compare to standard bikes? For example maybe a gsxr 600 or CBR 600 vs something like a SV650. Both have similarly sized engines but Im sure 600 super sports are more aggressively tuned and other factors. Lastly my one friend had a Kawasaki. I cant remember what kind but it may have been like a 2002 ninja 600? Anyways his monthly insurance was like less then $20 a month! Does anyone know what kind of coverage he may have had. When he crashed it, insurance paid for the damages to the car he hit and for himself. The bike however, was not covered at all. Is this a real thing or am I remembering it wrong? Sorry about the book! I was just curious. Thank you everyone for the help!""

YOSEMITE TO SAN FRANCISCO: JUNE 2000
I hung out with King every single day from that moment on. He became a regular fixture in our cabin, which was great, because as the days wore on—though Leah would never admit it—I could tell that she was already starting to long for the city life and restaurant dinners and her big white bed and her sweet-smelling soaps and lotions, and she began to dissolve back into a shallow pool of depression and self-loathing, which was mixed into a brutal combination of never wanting to accept any help from anyone. I got so frustrated with her that I could pretty much immediately tell that it was the beginning of yet another end, and I ended up hiking off into the dark and sleeping in my sleeping bag by the river most nights. But before all that happened, we had some pretty insane moments outside of all the sweeping and dusting of cabins, folding of towels, and making of beds. There are too many insane moments to write about right now, and telling them all would be an unnecessary feat of memory and imagination, anyway. There are two that really capture the feeling of that summer—the seed that summer planted in me that I knew would end up growing until I had to return to that island of weird that lies out there in the great open west, somewhere northeast of the Mojave Desert.
The first actually came in the sweltering heat of June, when King, Leah, and I all had a weekend off and decided that we needed a couple days in the city. King offered to drive to San Francisco and we spread the word around the park that we were going, so we had a few other girls join us: Laura, an extremely attractive but equally weird, blonde hippie type from Los Angeles who was in the park for the summer, waiting tables at the Ahwahnee; Heather—sweet Heather—who I already told you about going to visit in San Francisco a year later; and Allyson, a short, skinny, soft-spoken black-haired photographer who was really into birds. We all packed a change of clothes and some toiletries, and we piled into King’s bus one afternoon with our packs and thermoses of hot coffee and plenty of weed for the six of us, and we drove out of the park.
King chauffeured us through the mountains as Leah sat in the front passenger seat and smoked her own personal bag of weed, and Laura, Heather, Allyson and I passed a joint around in the back. And after an hour of nothing but that, Laura was talking about Los Angeles and about coming up under a couple of librarian parents, and she was talking about hanging out in the library as a teenager and reading Bukowski and then wanting to be bad and drinking and finding boys to make out with amongst the tall shelves of dusty books, the smell of old leather and musty yellowed pages. I started to get turned on. Then she sat on her knees on the floor and I snuck little peeks down at her legs, bent back beneath her firm, round butt that was ever so slightly touching my bare calf. Laura was strange, certainly, but she was a woman. King turned up the stereo, and arpeggiating guitar chords floated over all of us. He rolled down his window, and pine-scented air swept through the bus. Then I looked at the back of Laura’s neck as she pulled her hair back, and I was all of a sudden in the middle of this schoolboy fantasy where she would lean back against me, fall into me as we wound our way out of the mountains, and we would start kissing, and I didn’t care if Leah was sitting right there or not, I would have just gone with it.
I was high.
Then suddenly there was a yelp from the front seat, and the bus jerked hard to the right and weaved back and forth dangerously, sending Laura sprawling across the floor. Heather and Allyson clutched at her, and Leah waved frantically at her pant legs in the front seat as ashes and golden embers from her lit bowl flew around the bus.
King steadied the wheel. “Holy fucking shit, did you see THAT?!” he yelled.
Laura screamed, “Pull over!” She leaned forward and gripped the headrest of the driver’s seat, screaming directly into King’s ear. “Pull over, RIGHT NOW!”
King eased the bus onto the shoulder of the highway, and before he had even come to a complete stop, Laura was out the sliding side door, sprinting across four lanes of traffic in her pretty little flower-patterned sun dress with her bare feet. Heather leaned forward and put her hand on King’s arm.
“What happened?” she asked.
Leah, looking around the floorboards and reaching under her seat, said, “I don’t know, but I lost my bowl.”
King said nothing, but pointed a thumb back behind us, over his left shoulder. A huge two-trailered feed truck roared by, and after it passed we all saw Laura in her sun dress, bounding across the road to a deer that was writhing in the gravel behind a small sedan at the base of a hill of pine trees. A young man in a grey hooded sweatshirt and khaki cargo pants had stepped out of the sedan, the front of which was completely crushed. He looked at his demolished car for only a second, then started attempting to flag down passing cars as Laura knelt in the gravel and lifted the deer’s head into her arms. She began petting it and trying to calm it while simultaneously yelling at the guy.
“What the fuck were you doing?!” she yelled. Her voice echoed across the road and through the pines. “Weren’t you watching the fucking road?!” She sobbed. “This is a living, breathing being, and it was here long before you were! This is his land, not yours!”
Allyson turned to look at me. “Girl has completely lost it,” she said.
Heather nodded. “Let's leave her here.”
But King shook his head and opened his door. “C’mon, guys.” He looked back at Allyson, Heather, and I. “We have to go help this poor bastard.”
Across the highway, Laura was crying with the dead deer’s head in her fuckin’ lap of all places, and the young man was still trying to flag down a car and looking at Laura like she had a horn growing out of her face or something. He looked up at King and I as we approached. He said he was sorry, but formed it as a question. “I’m sorry?”
“Aw, c’mon man,” King said. “It’s not like you meant to do it.”
“This is bullshit!” Laura yelled, still sobbing. “Complete bullshit.”
Allyson started talking to Laura and running her hand through her hair, calming her, and she finally got her to let go of the deer and stand up just as a big green pick-up truck stopped just in front of the smashed sedan, the driver of which offered to call a tow truck. We wished the young man luck and walked back to the bus, Laura wiping at her tears with the back of her hand, gravel and dirt and deer hair all over her dress.
“We have to say a prayer for the deer,” Laura said. “Come here, stand in the grass with me.” Leah rolled her eyes, but got out of the bus nonetheless, and we all stood in the grass just off the gravel shoulder of the road, holding hands, a light breeze blowing through the pines overhead. Laura said her prayer, which consisted of her quietly chanting “Om mani padme hum,” over and over again—I’m not even kidding—as we all breathed deeply and tried not to fidget or cough or anything. Then we climbed back in the bus, and King started it up and pulled back out onto the highway.
King turned up the stereo and drove faster than he had before. And we cruised through the sun drenched Central Valley and wound our way up the MacArthur Freeway through Castro Valley and San Leandro, and up around big gray Oakland with its rows of drab houses along the side of the highway, and the sun was hanging at a low angle over a purple and red horizon as we got our first view of the bay and rolled on the bridge over strange little Treasure Island, with its big rectangular buildings and trees that just looked like perfectly round green bushes from that distance.
“I’ve got a surprise for you guys,” Laura finally said, breaking the silence. No one had said anything for a good hour or so. “I was going to wait until we got to the city, but I think I should tell you now.”
King shot a look over his shoulder and smiled that big smile of his. “I like surprises!” he said.
“It’ll help us get over that poor deer,” Laura said, which was funny, because she was the one who about lost her goddamned mind over the whole thing. She was digging in her shoulder bag on the floor, from which she produced a small plastic box, no bigger than a harmonica. She opened it, and there were several little squares of paper inside.
“I brought us each a hit of acid,” she said.
Heather shook her head.
Allyson howled and yelled, “I love it!”
I looked out west past the Embarcadero and the hills of San Francisco to where the Golden Gate sat amongst pillows of low-hanging fog, and I yelled, “Hello, Japan!” as a flurry of butterflies was unleashed in my belly.
Laura scooted off her bench and sat cross-legged, directly in front of me on the floor of the bus, and she closed her eyes and breathed deeply and leaned into me before reaching up her hand to put a hit of acid on my tongue. Then she turned to Allyson and did the same for her, and Allyson said, “You are crazy, but you are also very sexy.” Heather took hers in silence, but her round face broke into a beaming smile after she had the hit on her tongue. Leah got hers and said, “Here we go!” and King turned his head to the side while keeping his eyes on the road and his hand on the wheel, and he got his, after which Laura tapped him on the nose with her long index finger and said, “Thanks for driving us to the promised land, King James.”
As you can imagine, everyone was all of a sudden really very excited.
“What are we doing tonight, anyway?” Leah asked. “We should pro’ly decide before we all start tripping our faces off.”
“Yeah,” Allyson agreed. “We need to make a plan and stick to it. Otherwise we’ll just be wandering around looking at the pretty lights all night long.”
“Or getting robbed,” Heather added.
But King had a plan, and illustrated that to us by turning down the stereo and raising one finger into the air. “My whole reason for wanting to take this trip in the first place is that some movie called The Natural California or The Wild California or something like that is playing on the biggest IMAX movie screen in the WORLD in downtown San Francisco exactly...” (he pulled a watch out of his pocket and looked at it) “...one hour from now. I heard the movie has a bunch of scenes from Yosemite in it, and it’s playing on a screen that’s like four times as big as a usual movie screen. So we can make other plans, but we are definitely doing that first.”
“Shit, man,” I said. “You expect us to go into an IMAX theater right now? On acid? That’s going to be...something.”
Everyone laughed nervously.
We pulled into the city as the fog was rolling in over the bay, exiting on 5th and driving past apartments, a gas station, some tall glass hotels, and the San Francisco Chronicle building with its modern clock tower and iconic old sign. Then we turned right onto Mission past the old Pickwick Motel and a gigantic and grotesque Bloomingdale’s, and then up into a massive concrete parking garage, where we wound around and up three dark and fog-dampened levels before finding a spot between a cement pole and a big black Escalade.
“This garage’ll pro’ly cost us, but it’ll be worth it,” King said. “Bring anything you want for the whole night with you, just to be safe.”
We all threw our bags over our shoulders, and Leah rolled up her Ziploc bag of weed and stuffed it in her pocket. She got out of the bus and wiggled her arms and legs around. “I already feel a little funny,” she said.
I nodded. I felt like I was about nine feet tall, and something weird was going on inside my torso. “I am a hollow giant,” I said, much too loudly. We all giggled like maniacs and started walking together, arm in arm, down the ramp towards the exit. Leah was on the end, her arms locked with King’s, and I was on the other end next to Laura, who put her arm around my waist. “If I smoked a little weed right now,” I added, “I think I’d be entering the fifth dimension.”
“Yeah, we should smoke before we go in the theater!” Allyson said. “Really get us going.” Then she turned to King. “How did you know right where this place was, anyway?”
“I stopped here and saw Gladiator before I drove to Yosemite back in May.”
We all laughed. Laura said, “Russell Crowe is a disgusting little troll,” and Leah, Heather, and Allyson all agreed.
When we got out onto the street, the sky was already a bit darker and all the streetlights and signs were aglow. Taxi cabs and minivans and luxury sedans and SUVs and a pick-up truck or two roared by, and there were honking horns and well-dressed pedestrians rushing past us, maybe heading home from the office, or heading in to work if they were in the service industry. Our theater was on the corner, with a bunch of rowdy teenagers milling around outside. The theater’s five-story-high sign was beaming up through the fog into the purple sky like a tractor beam from a UFO.
“Would’ja look at that.”
I got a little paranoid about being so touchy with Laura all of a sudden, so I found Leah and put my arm around her. She squeezed it.
“C’mon, let’s go over here really quick!” Allyson said. She grabbed our arms and herded us all quickly down the block, past the teenagers, over past the theatre entrance and around the corner to a big square of grass—an urban park with some wide concrete steps up leading up to it. We sat on a small slope under a tree next to a concrete building covered with ivy, and Allyson produced a joint from her shirt pocket.
“Oh, you are so wonderful” Laura said through a wide smile. Her eyes were squinting and tearing up a bit, and she wiped at them, then opened them really wide and giggled. “We have to go in there IMMEDIATELY after we smoke this, because I’m going to lose it pretty soon.”
King got really serious for a second. He touched each of our arms, and looked us all in the face. “Everybody get your $20 ready and don’t say ANYTHING to ANYONE when we get in there,” he said. “Seriously, guys. I’m SERIOUS!” He was practically yelling.
I laughed. “We’ll be fine, man,” I assured him.
We sat there and smoked the joint in silence, watching all the city dwellers march by on the wide sidewalk and staring at an old red brick cathedral across the street, which looked so insanely out of place with all the towering, modern skyscrapers behind it. And when the joint was gone and Allyson was leaning back against the tree with Laura, Heather, Leah, and I all lying back with our heads on her legs, King snapped out of his stoicism and jumped up in one spastic movement. He shook his arms and legs around and hopped up and down a couple times. “Let’s go see The Wild California!” he yelled.
None of us moved. My arms and legs felt like they were filled with maple syrup. “We’re in the wild California,” I mumbled.
“Yeah,” Laura agreed. She put her hand on my stomach.
A city bus roared by, and Leah pointed at it. “That is most definitely not wild.”
“Well, no,” Heather offered, “but you should see the creatures inside it!”
King looked like he was about ready to start goddamned crying or something, though, so we all finally relented, stood, and walked towards the theater with him. Even on acid, he really did want to see the goddamned movie pretty badly. And he had driven us all there, after all.
The entrance to the theater was just as extravagant as the sign outside, with flashing lights everywhere, and colored tiles on the floors. My trip had extended beyond my body at that point and was working its way up into my head, where my eyes were dilating and letting in the maximum amount of light possible, and my head was swimming with what seemed to me like the thoughts of just about everyone we passed—like I had acquired telepathy or something. But Leah managed to very primly and properly buy us some bottles of water from the concession stand, and we all made it into our theater and into our six adjacent seats without causing much of a scene.
There was the quiet chatter of people settling in for what seemed like a couple hours—dates talking in hushed tones to one another, flirting, entwining their arms on the arm rests, groups of teenaged kids throwing popcorn and horsing around—and then the house lights dimmed and the biggest movie screen in the world lit up and sucked us in. I was pretty much in a trance for a good two hours, but a few things I remember from the movie were: 1. the feeling that rushed through my body when the fancy plush seats we were all sitting in reclined on their own (a feeling which King certainly shared, as the second the seat started reclining he let out a long, sighing “Ooooh!”), 2. someone a few rows ahead of us turned around to tell Laura to be quiet, which sent her into an outrageous giggle fit that only ended when Allyson took her sweatshirt off and threw it over Laura’s head, and 3. the first time they showed Yosemite, it was an aerial shot from a plane that was swooping down over the Sierra Nevada, and everything seemed to get really big and three-dimensional all of a sudden, and King actually stood up right there in the middle of the theater and yelled, “That’s our HOME! We LIVE there!” which made the girls crack up, and made me anxiously jump up to pull King back down into his seat and tell him to shut up before someone called the police and we all got put in jail or something.
When the movie was over, pretty much everyone around us made snide remarks to us out of the corners of their mouths as they left, fortunately none of which I could comprehend. My head was swimming with images from the movie as I turned away from the screen and attempted to adjust my massive pupils to the light in the theater. The patterns on the walls and floor were all swirling around and sliding around each other like oil and water. Allyson and Laura and Heather and Leah were hugging in one big pile of limbs as they attempted to squeeze their way out of the aisle, Allyson struggling to put her sweatshirt back on as they did so, and King had avoided their whole tangled mess and gone straight back, jumping rows of chairs on his way out.
“We need to get OUTSIDE!” he was yelling. “Let's go to the BEACH!”
And it may have just been the acid, but I swear that theater lobby had a whole section in it where the floor was comprised of translucent tiles that light up all sorts of different colors, so that was another distraction on our way out—a great enough distraction that Leah actually sat down on the lit-up floor at one point and said, “I’m not leaving. I don’t want to go outside. This place is perfect.” And we all tried to caress her and comfort her and cajole her, but eventually King just picked her up and tossed her over his shoulder, and she laughed hysterically as we finally emerged from our palace of light out onto 4th Street.
The next two or three hours were spent wandering around laughing and taking in all the sights and sounds and smells of the fog-dampened San Francisco night, while probably frightening the hell out of anyone we ran into by yelling, “Where's the BEACH?!” right in their faces. Nearly everyone we asked at least tried to give us some sort of directions before they realized we were completely out of our minds—bless their hearts—and there was also one crazy and possibly schizophrenic old homeless man who got into a surreal 20-minute conversation with King and then thought it was a good idea to hang out with us for a while before he, too, realized that we were crazier than he would ever be. “Y’all a bunch o’ wackos!” he yelled. Then he ran off screaming something about our mothers and bad parenting.
Eventually we did end up in North Beach, and I tried to explain to King and the girls that the City Lights Bookstore was a mecca not to be ignored, even on acid. So Joe and I stood in the window and I talked a bunch of gibberish about Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso and William Burroughs and Neal Cassady and my man Jack for a while as King at least pretended to pay attention and we ogled the book covers and the pretty reflections in the glass. Leah wandered across the street with Allyson and Heather, who were drawn by the book-shaped lights hanging from the telephone wires right there on that great historical old corner of Broadway and Columbus, by The Condor and Big Al’s Adult Bookstore and Lenny Bruce’s Hungry I Club, where busty strippers in sparkly sequin gowns stood on the sidewalk and later said to King and I that we “looked fun” and should bring our dates inside “for a good time,” and King said, “Free love is a better time!” in a strange and alien voice that I had never heard come out of his face before—a voice that seemed to visibly frighten the poor sequined strippers, who quickly retreated inside.
When you are tripping on acid or mushrooms—and I mean really tripping, not just getting a little body buzz or having a laugh or whatever—every giant and seemingly ultra-significant thought in your head is instilled with not only a comforting sense of human interconnectedness, but also an underlying sense of dread and a sort of hyper-awareness of our mortality. And the thing is, it really doesn't take much to get that dread to bubble up to the surface, especially when the trip is on its way out. So around one o’clock in the morning when all the bars were starting to close and the streets were emptying of people, and the five of us were still wandering around without much of a clue where we were, and King had lost his shoes and Allyson was looking at his dirty feet and very coldly and methodically listing about all the possible diseases he could have contracted through over the course of the evening, and we still hadn’t found ourselves a beach at all, but had really just been wandering around in circles for a good four or five hours, it only took Leah to say, “This isn’t fun anymore,” to pull us all down into a deep and muddy mire of anxiety and paranoia. We were no longer prancing around like stupid little drunken elves on a holiday, we were clutching at each other and stumbling through dirty alleys and over cracked sidewalks through the streetlight-lit urban night, craning our necks at each large building and street sign, hoping to just randomly stumble upon our theater and our parking garage and our blessed, blessed powder blue 1964 Volkswagen Type 2 split-window microbus.
And eventually, some two hours later when we did find our parking garage, it happened just like that—we stumbled upon it. We saw a concrete building with a big tree behind it, and when we walked around the building, planning on crashing under the tree for a quick rest, a few of us flopped in the grass completely oblivious to everything around us, but Allyson realized that the tree was the same one we had smoked a joint under before watching The Wild California.
“Guys,” she said, “the theater is RIGHT THERE.”
And the next thing that happened is maybe just about the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. You see, we were all really very wasted at that point—all kinds of messed up, as you can imagine—and we all just kind of piled into the bus right there in the parking garage in a tangle of limbs and moved around until we were comfortable. Heather immediately fell asleep in the driver’s seat, and the rest of us were smashed together on the fold-out mattress in the back. Then Leah got out and said she had to throw up, and whether she did or not, I’m not sure, but when she got back in the bus she sat up in the front passenger seat and passed out. King leaned up into the front seat to turn the key halfway in the ignition and put some Leonard Cohen on the stereo, and he lit a couple of candles that he put up on the little counter in the back of the bus and got some blankets out of a little cupboard back there and threw ‘em over all of us while Allyson rolled a joint. And sitting back there, 19 years old, coming down from that physical and emotional roller coaster and smoking a joint, I was just feeling really relaxed and good.
Then, under the blankets, Laura put her hand up pretty high on my leg and moved it over my crotch, and she nuzzled into me and I got excited. And I’m not going to go into any details or be all pervy about it or anything—basically because I still to this day feel really bad about it. But the thing is, after we smoked that joint there by candlelight in that little bus, King laid down and put his arm around Allyson and the two of them fell asleep, and Laura pushed herself into me, put her soft lips right up next to my ear, and her hot breath washed over my face as she whispered, “I want you.” Then she rolled over on top of me under that blanket—right next to King and Allyson—and we kissed passionately for what seemed like an hour before she fell asleep on top of me, and Leah was right there in the same goddamned vehicle the whole time, and holy shit do I feel bad about all that.

How do you find another person's insurance carrier for an auto accident?

Am i paying too much for car insurance?
I am in my early 30s. A single male, no kids. I have a pretty much spotless driving record. The only ticket i have had in the past 10 years that i can think of off hand was for not using a turn signal, that was over a year ago. Other than that, nothing in around 10 years. No claims on my insurance in over 10 years either. I drive a 2001 Ford ZX2, its a compact car-for those not familiar with it , it would be similar to a Chevy Cavalier or Dodge Neon. Oh, im paying $700 every 6 months for full coverage car insurance through Nationwide. I have been with them ever since i started driving. This seems like alot. Is it? How much damage will the other drivers insurance have to pay?
My son was involved in a collision this morning. The driver of the other vehicle pulled out right in front of him and he rear-ended them. The driver of the other vehicle was cited for failure to yield and the state trooper that handled the accident said that the collision was unavoidable on my sons part. The question concerning me is that my son did not pay anything for the car he was driving because it was given to him by my daughter. The car has a salvage title because it had apparently been totalled before but had been restored. The car probably would not be worth very much even had it never been in an accident because it is a 1986 year model Pontiac 6000. Now he is without transportation unless I provide it. Will they only be required to pay a salvage price for damages or what?
How much is Progressive auto insurance for one car?
I'm 18, almost 19 years old and I recently figured out that with American Family Insurance that my parents have for me, I'm actually paying like $40 more than everyone else in my family just because I'm a young male driver. I think that our current insurance company is total **** so I wanted to look up how much a different company would be (in this case progressive because it seems to be one of, if not the best insurance company out there). But I went to their website, and I couldn't find jack about how much car insurance would be with them. I saw stuff like discounts, information about bundling (or something like that), but not a goddamn thing about how much it would be to be insured by them. How will this 15-20 mph speeding ticket affect my insurance?
I just turned 18 and I am a senior in high school. I live in a small area that is just between two towns. This area is known for its police; they have a tendency to give speeding tickets out like crazy. They hide in places so that they can catch people speeding; the area is generally a 30mph zone. I had a good morning and got a little foot-happy...I sped right up to a cop that hides next to my neighborhood. Needless to say, I was going 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Without a seat belt. I was extremely honest, so I got a speeding ticket but the seat belt issue was simply a warning. This is my first ticket ever; the only other time I had been pulled over was because I forgot to turn on my headlights...I was 16 at the time. I have State Farm Insurance and have an extremely decent rate for my age. I have no issues paying the speeding ticket because I did speed...I just don't want my insurance to be crushed. I went through driver's education, State Farm's Steer Clear Program, and I have maintained my grades to ensure that I get a decent rate. What will this ticket do to my rate? And what is the best I can make out of this situation?""
