Before you go typing stuff, I am aware it's the result of needing a video game to have stakes and the writers needing a plot. I understand watsonian and doylist reasoning, im a writer myself. this is purely for the in-universe implications which I believe are crazy.

In episode 12: Teacher of the Year, danny and his friends are playing some kind of online game where the grand prize for beating it is full access to the World Wide Web. I re watched this episode prior to writing this, though it has been a hot minute since ive seen the other episodes, so i don't know exactly if they've actually used the internet prior to that episode. But i do remember technus escaping because Danny deleted his old save of Doomed so i guess that does imply he beat it at some point after episode 12.

The mere fact they can even play an online game in the first place would imply they have some access but not as much as they could. Kind of like how when you have a learners permit you can only drive in the daytime with an adult in the passenger seat. Can you imagine getting online and only being able to access wikipedia and facebook? Thats what I'm seeing from this.

So as far as we know, anyone who wants to get full access to the internet has to play and beat this game. We see danny and tucker make it to the final level multiple times, it takes them all night but that assumes even an average player can make it far if they keep at it. So the game itself couldn't be too difficult.

But what bewilders me the most is what Sam's doing. Why does this game have PVP? Sam hasn't beat the game either, she was likely doing it just to fuck with danny and tucker but she also blasts some random dude at the beginning. The trio seemed to all be able to win the game together at the very end, meaning there isn't any actual reason for pvp since there's no need to claim the prize solely for yourself.

Then there's Lancer. He's already beating the goddamn game! Yet he comes back just to beat it again and fight people! Is he gaining anything from this? Probably not. But why would this be an option for returning players? It's like someone who gets a doctorate degree and then goes around a middle school with a baseball bat bashing any student they see trying to learn and the school staff do nothing about it.

Why is the world set up like this? Did the government decide full internet access is something someone should have to take a test for? Did everyone have to take the test or were they grandfathered into keeping full access? I dunno how old Lancer is but unless we assume he was only playing the game for fun, he had to have beat Doomed when he was younger. so that implies his generation and the one after were all subject to this rule.

Is Doomed the only game like this? are there other games for other kinds of people since not everyone is good at FPS games? Could there be other things like make a character on the sims live for a whole year on max difficulty and then you win? Beat halo on legendary with all skulls on? speedrun mario 64 below the allowed time limit? Whose idea was this!? Not everyone is going to want full access when they're teens like danny, but what about when you get a job? Do you need to put "I beat Doomed" on your resume? this whole this is just fucking bizzare,

It's a minor detail never really brought up again, but the wider implications of it are immense. Anyway, im using this episode as inspiration to write a story because I cannot let this idea just get swept under the ecto-rug.

goddamn it now you've got me thinking about Sonic Minecraft headcanons and shit lmaoooo lemme like... spout a few: -Tails is the redstone nerd, he's the one who would literally learn to build computers inside of minecraft. The others purposefully ignore redstone in caves purely because they dont want him building massive shit that lags the entire server lmao, if he wants the redstone he has to get it himself. -Amy and Sonic are the two who use shaders, Sonic has a beefy-ass PC that Tails made for him so he likes to use shaders to make the world look as cool as possible, but he's also still a freak for high FPS so he tends to use low-end shaders with very basic texture packs. Amy, however, pushes her own PC to it's limits to make shit look as beautiful as possible, and she has a whole slew of texture packs that she's organized and uses. She's the screenshot lover, and the primary builder of the group. -Omega isn't in the server because he would not stop asking for mods that add explosives so he gets his own modded world where it's just.... always chaos. -Amy is also the primary server moderator, while Tails helps her with the technical stuff. -Rouge has been banned and unbanned like 14 times for stealing so now they shut down the server if Amy or Tails isn't online to make sure she doesn't cause trouble again. -Sonic, as you've mentioned, tends to explore a lot, so the others often find random dirt huts every 1000 blocks or so from when he forgets to take food with him and his sprint runs out at night time lol -Knuckles is the primary mining dude, he also absolutely refuses to give up his emeralds to trade with villagers because he wants to rebuild his home ruins in Minecraft and hopes to use emerald blocks for that. -Shadow is.... a bit of a wildcard??? He just tends to do whatever the hell he feels like, which is either building onto his house made of an assortment of random blocks, or causing absolute fucking mayhem for everyone else. He's also the one who spends his EXP on naming his weapons the most batshit insane stuff. -There was a moment in time when they were all in a VC together that Sonic said "Oh hey I found Shadow!" and not even 5 seconds later the message "SpeedyBoi was slain by XxUltimateShitlordxX" appeared in the in-game chat -Tails most likely helped set up some of their Minecraft accounts so many of them ended up stuck with names they absolutely did not choose

R-E-S-P-E-C-T—Pt. 2

Inspired by the Hero’s Duty comic from the Comic Zone magazine.

But the next day’s quarter alerts couldn’t help but draw Markowski out from under the covers. After all, he had a duty. A hero’s duty. 

As he hustled to join the rest of the corps, Markowski could already hear them laughing, and he didn’t need to hear a word to know it was about him.

“You get a load of Markowski last night?” Private Marco guffawed.

“Oh, it was prime time viewing!” Lieutenant Loya replied with a hearty chuckle.

“An all-time classic,” Private Maddox concurred with an eager nod.

Markowski felt his cheeks burn red. After the humiliation of last night, he’d accepted that this would always be his lot in life. But that didn’t mean he had to like it.

As the First Person Shooter rolled through the crowd, Markowski could see the goings-on outside the game. A young boy with huge horn-rims and freckles was about to insert his coins when the gun was ripped from his hands by a big-boned brute of a boy, with a face ridden with acne and stubble. 

“Out of the way, you little snot!” The bully elbowed the bespectacled boy out of the way. “Let the best Hero’s Duty player in the county show you how it’s done!”

The boy brandished the gun with an evil smirk. “I’ll bet you all your candy I can finish this stupid game in just one go.” 

In the background of the screen, Markowski could see the other boy backing away, his eyes downcast with shame as he listened to the boastful bully say all those demeaning things. Markowski’s heart broke. For though he was a skinny twig of a boy and Markowski was a mountain of a marine, the private saw himself in the boy—downtrodden, meek, mistreated. 

But he knew the bully’s bragging would come back to bite him. After all, Hero’s Duty had ninety-nine levels, and most kids never made it past the first.

“Follow me!” The FPS robot charged forward as the bully gave a triumphant yell. Feverishly he shot at cy-bugs, with the marines assisting. 

He passed level one with ease, then level two and three. 

Well, Markowski thought as he made short work of some cy-bug eggs on the third floor of the lab. He thinks he’s better than everyone else just because he can beat two more levels.

But the bully forged on. Ten levels…twenty…fifty…

Markowski’s jaw dropped as the bully handled the game with no difficulty. Clearly, he knew Hero’s Duty inside and out. If this kept up, the bully would win, and the poor boy would lose everything. 

He shot a glance at his commanding officer. Calhoun certainly didn’t look happy to be helping this player. But she wasn’t about to go against the program.

Sure, it was the soldiers’ duty to get the player to the top of the tower so they could win the Medal of Heroes. But wasn’t it also their duty to uphold the ideals of bravery, integrity, grace, and dignity—all of which the bully lacked in spades?

He gazed once more at the robot’s screen, at the sighing face of the bespectacled boy, wishing he could do something—anything—to help him out.

Then an idea hit Markowski faster than Calhoun’s fist after he accidentally splattered her with Cy-Bug egg yolk before her first date with Felix. 

If the bully knew the game this well, the only way to make him lose is if something unexpected happened. And Markowski knew exactly where to find that.

As shots ricocheted around the seventy-fifth floor lab, the private hoped he wouldn’t be noticed amidst the chaos as he bashed a hole in the glass window with the butt of his gun. Once it was big enough, he climbed through the hole and escaped. 

Markowski’s breathing was heavy as he scaled the jagged walls of the tower to the top. There was the lever he’d technically not touched…but today he would touch it, and be proud of it. 

The sounds of laser flares and the horrific metal buzzing of the Cy-Bugs began to fade away. General Hologram was beginning his spiel as he prepared to bestow the Medal of Heroes on the bully. 

With a deep, determined breath, Markowski grasped the lever in his hands and gave it a sharp yank.

Instantly the massive cloud of Cy-Bugs descended. Markowski scrambled down once more, bashing another sizeable hole in the glass window leading to the chamber of the Medal of Heroes. 

All the soldiers turned toward the strange sight, mouths agape. Except, of course, Calhoun, whose mouth was pinched in her usual anger.

“What are you nutcrackers waiting for?” She scowled. “Weapons up!”

The soldiers all brandished their guns—but outside the game, the bully had dropped his in shock.

“What the HECK!?” He shouted. “There’s no final level boss in Hero’s Duty!”

As he scrambled to pick up the plastic weapon, there was a horrific screech as the eyes of the Cy-Bugs turned from a glowing green to a blazing red. As they formed the monstrous image of a giant Cy-Bug, the bully backed away in utter terror, not even bothering to put up a fight as the swarm ignored the other soldiers and lunged straight at him.

GAME OVER.

“Markowski.” Calhoun marched over to the private, her rage making her eyes glow even more fiery than the Cy-Bugs’. “What do you have to say for yourself?” She socked him in the jaw, and Markowski peered timidly out from beneath his visor, prepared for the ridicule he would soon receive.

But there was another emotion on the faces of the soldiers—pure amazement and admiration.

Pure respect.

“Ma’am, I’m so sorry…” Markowski‘s voice wavered. “It’s just…I couldn’t let that boy win…”

“Like fun you couldn’t.” Calhoun bared her teeth. “Private, your off-game privileges are revoked until further notice!”

“Aw, c’mon, Sarge!” Loya protested. “This guy deserves a round after that performance!”

“Yeah! C’mon, ‘Kowski! Root beer’s on me!” Marco whooped. 

“Loya! Marco! Shut your chew holes!” yelled Calhoun. She turned to Markowski once more. “Get back to start position before I rip your head off!”

“Yes, ma’am!” Markowski saluted. And for the first time, he did it with a smile.

As the soldiers scrambled back to start position, Markowski could hear the other soldiers cheering.

He didn’t need to hear a word to know it was for him.

May I request headcanons with Caelus, Dan Heng, March 7th, Welt, Jing Yuan, Sampo, Kafka and Blades reaction to having 2 players in one account? One ABSOLUTELY loves the fighting (and the flirting choices) of the game, while the other is more invested in the lore (ESPECIALLY the garbage can lore). (Ill call em FP and LP respectively).

Both share one main team when they play story mode together but have their own teams when they play independently, they work together like an well-oiled machine when they play together. (FP specializing in fights with equiptment and strategy, while LP aids in lore aspects of quests, and explains lore to FP when theyre confused) The main trio have a special place in their hearts so they lovingly call em "our children"

Id imagine, they'd get petty if one accidentally plays some of the storyline ahead being like " you played ahead...??? Without me?!?!?! JAIL! JAIL FOR 100,000 YEARSS >:o" - LP

Heres some interactions I'd imagine the character may overhear:

A self-aware au in which two players with very different play styles share an account. What do the characters think of them?

The first of the “children”. Caelus feels flattered that the players think of him that way but is a bit curious as to why they call him that considering everyone’s respective age…

Loves the banter between the two players. He’s a quietly sarcastic little gremlin so that’s right up his alley.

Has a soft spot for the lore focused player, mostly since they like the garbage can lore and that’s something he feels he and the player can bond over.

But both players hold a special place in his heart since he’s formed a bond with both of them over the course of the game.

Dan Heng has so many questions. Why are the players calling him their “child”? He’s older than they are. And there’s certainly no biological connection.

Regardless, he knows it’s their way of displaying affection so he’ll take their comments with gratitude, despite their baffling nature.

Has a preference towards the lore invested player, mostly because history and the story behind the story are his interests as well. He feels they can bond over that shared interest.

He also appreciates it when the players find records that get added to the archive. He wouldn’t be able to read as much if they didn’t so he’s very grateful.

Unlike Dan Heng, March absolutely loves being referred to as one of the players “children”. She thinks it’s a sweet term of affection.

She doesn't like playing favourites but she has a preference towards the player that prefers fighting and flirting. She thinks they’re fun!

Like Caelus, March loves the banter between the players, as long as it doesn’t get too serious; she likes to keep things fun.

She always gets nervous when the story progresses with only one player present. She knows they only play the storyline together, so she gets concerned that something has happened to the other player.

Welt is concerned about the players sometimes…why is one of the players calling Screwllum their “hubby”? And is the other player talking about him when they talk about the old man?!

But his concern is just his way of displaying his affection for the players.

The contrast between their playing styles may have confused and annoyed him at first but it quickly grows on him and now he can’t imagine any other playing style.

Doesn’t really have a favourite between the players. If he had to choose, he might lean more towards the lore focused player since flirting isn’t really his style. But he cares for the both pretty equally.

Jing Yuan will argue over who the players are referring to when they talk about the “old men” forever. In his mind, that’s him; if he’s going to be called old, it may as well be in reference to someone showing interest in him…

He’s a general so he has a lot of respect for the players for taking turns when their respective interests and strengths are relevant.

Despite their cohesion, Jing Yuan will sometimes critique the players on their shortfallings. They work well together most of the time, but when one plays ahead, Jing Yuan just shakes his head.

He knows there’s going to be some pettiness to follow the next time both players are on together.

Sampo doesn’t know whether to be flattered or insulted when the players keep talking about him being “just a goofy little guy who’s just a little fruity”.

He loves the fighting and flirting player; they remind him a lot of himself so he feels like they share a strong connection.

Since he’s the only one with the power to break the fourth wall, he often passes on messages from the other characters. He just has to find ways to work those messages into the story so it doesn’t seem strange.

And the other characters have to repay him somehow. Sampo’s not doing that for free, he’s got his own messages to pass along as well.

Kafka is subtly honoured that the players feel so positively about her, especially the fighting and flirting player.

When she came home for the first time, she was bombarded by screams as the players celebrated her arrival.

Doesn’t have a favourite between the players but if forced to choose, she would probably say the fighting flirting player.

What can she say? Undying affection is something she can appreciate and that player certainly has that in droves for her.

Blade is more reserved about his affection for the players. His main way of displaying affection for them is increasing the number of quotes he says about death.

He knows the lore based player likes those quotes and he enjoys hearing the banter between the players after he says something edgy.

He is slightly concerned about them sometimes though. His edginess and depression is fine since he’s just a character. But it’s different for the players and he hopes they’re doing okay.

No preference between the players but he prefers it when they’re both playing together. It leads to less conflict in the future…

Any batfam headcanons you’d like to share?

Here’s some of mine:

-All of the batfamily (including Alfred) is Neurospicy™️ in some form. Steph has adhd, tim has ocd/adhd, etc etc. Jason has extremely unmedicated add.

-After reading Pride & Prejudice for the first time (Jason’s, he stole it for a bit) Damian decided to read the rest of Jane Austin’s work and fell down a rabbit hole, eventually reading Jane Eyre (criticizing Jane the entire time) and the Secret Garden (which is his favorite because of similarities between him and Mary, the mc of the book)

-Jason keeps protein bars and Fruit snacks on him for the kiddos round crime alley (they love him)

-Harley + Steph get along extremely well, especially when it comes to being silly

-Monopoly is banned from game nights, along with Scrabble, Clue/Cluedo and Settlers of Catan due to Tim being outrageously good at them and beating everyone no matter what disadvantages that are placed on him. (Jason always flips, stabs or shoots the game board when he plays Monopoly. On Damian’s first game night, He accidentally shot Dick in the foot once because of it going through the table.)

-As a follow up, Life is not. Tim always loses at Life and no one knows how.

-Damian is overly competitive at all games and he *will* try to rule lawyer every game he plays. (Because of this Jason, Steph, Selena and Harley like to cheat in various ways. Harley plays it like a kid would be playing chess— ie. making shit up on the spot and calling it apart of the game. Selena straight steals cards/pieces when no one is looking then gaslights everyone about it. Steph finds loopholes in every rule to an exact science. Jason just does what he wants.)

-Cass and Jason play FPS’ together. Mainly Fortnite, Apex and even Valorant. They always win with clutches that make everyone on the other team mad.

-Tim and Riddler are surprisingly on good terms, with Edward sending Tim puzzle box prototypes on occasion. (Edward also has a side gig where he actually designs, produces and manufactures these boxes. It’s how he gets most of the money for elaborate traps. Can’t be doing bank robbing on a consistent basis when most of the other rogues are taking most of his opportunities!)

-Jason really loves throwing stars, he just never gets the chance to use them.

While I know that videogames might not be everyone's cup of tea, let's just pretend that ALL your characters actually do like playing certain videogames. What kind of games do each of them like the most, and are they any good at it?

This one had me do some real thinkin'... 🤔💭

Guzma:

I think Guzma actually really enjoys playing any kind of co-op game with the grunts, even if he's not really good at them. But the grunts think it's funny when he starts raging at a game and he knows it. As far as games he plays alone in his freetime, I feel he prefers adventure/rpg type of game. He doesn't play a whole lot, but when he does find a game he likes, he plays it obsessively and tries to find every little bit of lore and secrets it has. He also always ends up becoming obsessed with games barely anyone's ever heard of and often he pesters Plumeria to play whatever game that is so he can discuss it with someone. (He also likes chill games and farming simulators like stardew Valley and animal crossing, but he's embarrassed about it and will deny it if asked)

Plumeria:

Plums likes rhythm games and strategy/puzzle based games mainly. It's definitely worth noting that she's, like, INSANELY good at them, too. Long story short, all the grunts know to never to take her bet if it invloves beating her high score. She also really enjoys any kind of game that implements any kind of branching path mechanic, so she's definitely played games like Zero Escape, Hades, and any of the telltale games multiple times.

Leon:

Definitely any kind of resource management game. So stuff like slime rancher, oxygen not included, factorio, terraria, et cetera. He's actually had to self ban himself from playing certain games because he missed too many league meetings literally playing for hours without realizing it. It bums him out because they were super fun, but he knows he can't trust himself.

Hop:

He likes minecraft and other sandbox games. He likes playing co-op with friends, but when he's at home, he doesn't have a great internet connection.

Moon:

Like the little gremlin she is, she likes horror games. She especially likes making Gladion and Hau play horror games with her. Or rather, not telling them it's a horror game until it's too late

A & B:

B is stellar at platformers. A is the best at fighting games of all the grunts. They are both equally trash at racing games.

Kalani (oc):

When he was much younger, he spent a LOT of time playing FPS. By the end of high school, he kind of got bored with them and played more MMO RPGs.

Molayne:

Mo also like MMO RPGs. He also likes games like Elden Ring and Bloodborn. He has, very discreetly, played a variety of dating sims and, no, no one knows about this but him.

Kukui:

The professor plays a lot of battle royale games. He's also very bad about getting sucked into gotcha games.

I just discovered your blog and I already love it! Can I ask you what would be the favorite video games of the groups Destiny, Sea salt and Wayfinder please? What would they play or like? Multiple KH Characters and Their Favorite Video Games!

Destiny Island Trio: 

Sora: Fighting games- preferably Smash. He mains himself main characters (Mario, Link, Kirby, FE protags). He sucks. He is the guy who button mashes and corners players to beat the hell out of them. 

Riku: Fighting games- preferably Tekken or Street Fighter. Mains Jin or Lee. Attempts to be strategic but gets way too competitive fast and is busy mashing all the buttons off the controller. 

Kairi: Way too good at fighting games. But she’d probably play lots of Pokemon or monster collecting games. She has many setups that are both competitive or just fun ones for a fun challenge. 

Sea Salt Family: 

Roxas: Persona fanboy. He hasn’t played 1-2 but he can’t pick a favorite between 3-5. Plays all the spinoffs or has someone else play them for him. His favorite characters are the protagonists. Hears jazz music and assumes this is a Persona 5 reference. 

Xion: Resident DMC and Souls-like player. Girl is a monster on the controllers despite being just being born. The way she can effortlessly combo and dodge all attacks makes her a fearsome opponent. 

Axel: Mario Kart. Axel is pretty average at video games (unless they’re like, retro or arcade) but Mario Kart? He’s on it like Donkey Kong. He mains Funky Kong. 

Saix: He has two wolves inside him- the logical gamer and the second, more absurd gamer. Sometimes he wants to unwind, so he might pick up a basic platformer like Mario or Sonic, but on the other side- he’s a menace in a Warriors game. He’s hacking and slashing. He’s killing everyone in his path. Also, he’s a completionist.  He has to get the best markings and everything. Won’t settle for less. 

Wayfinder Trio: 

Terra: Minecraft and fighting games. He tries his best lmao. He’s just got pretty big hands so often he messes up with combos but he’s also pretty impatient and tends to spam certain moves.

Aqua: Rhythm games definitely. Watch her effortlessly get all perfect scores in one try. Even the hardest OSU! map has nothing on Aqua. She also kicks ass at fighting games. 

Ventus: He likes Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games and Mario Party. He always loses at almost any game against his friends though. 

Bonus Characters: 

Namine: I feel like she enjoys visual novels and Okami. She really loves aesthetic games and is a patient player. 

Xemnas: does not play video games beyond Candy Crush or Solitaire. You kids and your “Splatoons” or “Bayonettas”, go pick up an old Final Fantasy game smh. 

Xigbar: Call of Duty. Fortnite. PUBG. Overwatch. He’s a menace and plays all sorts of FPS games. His sniping abilities IRL translate very well into games. Also likes the Hitman games. 

Vexen: Bookworm and civilization manager games. He’s big on Age of Empires and is a top talent within the community. He loves playing as the Vikings or Mayans for competitive play. He’s also made many custom maps. 

Zexion: Tower Defense managers and Ace Attorney. He loves deducing the crime or finding the best way to defend his base with the minimum amount of units possible. 

Xaldin: He doesn’t play games (lie). He plays romantic visual novels. Plays all kinds of them. Otomes too. He is a lonely man. Also loves cooking games. 

Lexaeus: farming games. He just has a fun time playing Story of Seasons. Rune Factory is nice too but he prefers SoS because he loves the farming aspect more. 

Demyx: Guitar Hero. No argument. This man did all the crazy achievements and was going at it for days.

Luxord: Yeah yeah solitaire and gambling- have you considered he loves playing the Yakuza games? Well now you do. He loves the games dearly and cherishes them and likes to be the biggest Yakuza on the block. Also yeah, he plays lot of gacha games. 

Marluxia: Doesn’t really play video games, but he’d most likely play some horror games with Larxene or town management games. 

Larxene: Horror games or multiplayer games where she can troll people. Banned from multiple servers and people refuse to play with her minus Marluxia. Aesthetically though she loves Trish from DMC and thinks Vergil is number one.

Watching Halo, Episode 9

The grand finale, people! This is not a drill!

We begin in media res, with John fighting his way back to consciousness after getting the crap beat out of him and then getting blasted by the artifact’s shockwave. At first it’s not clear where everyone is—on the ground, is the answer. John finds Makee and the artifact gone (she’s elsewhere in the base making her escape) and returns to Silver Team to find Riz and Vannak holding Kai hostage (how dare!). John and Kai try to tell them the truth about Halsey, but it’s not until Keyes breaks the stalemate by coming clean—in front of Miranda!—that they believe and stand down. John rallies them to deal with the present crisis: Kai goes after Halsey and the other three go after Makee.

Makee gets away clean, but Halsey is stalling, too obsessed with her science to leave, despite Adun’s useless pleading. (He also says “the package is secure”, which I didn’t catch the first time and which a recapper I saw took to mean “Makee has the artifact”, but, uh…) They’ve just taken off when Kai, like the badass she is, jumps onto the fleeing ship, blasts her way in—and gets distracted demanding info from Halsey instead of dealing with the crashing ship. She does manage to kill that creepy little weasel Adun, but Halsey ejects in a life pod and the ship crashes. AND FOR A MINUTE THEY LET ME THINK MY GIRL IS DEAD, before she PULLS HERSELF OUT OF THE FLAMING WRECKAGE LIKE A BOSS. GO KAI.

Back to searching the Aspero system, their only lead, which they’ve almost given up on before they remember gravitational lensing exists? Seriously? (The “sparkles like glass” imagery is lovely though. If a little menacing, given the use of the term “glassing” in this universe.) I appreciate that Parangosky gave Chief a pep talk instead of continuing to argue he can’t go, or whatever. With a stupid and potentially personally distracting attempt at apology from Keyes, we’re off! (The future reckoning is gonna be a doozy.) The Spartans bickering like a family again is sweet, in a we’ll-shoot-each-other-if-necessary kind of way. They haven’t taken the time to remove Riz or Vannak’s pellets yet.

On Reach, Halsey gets captured, which I’m sure isn’t going to end well. Nothing ever does with her. Which Keyes should have learned years ago and is paying for now, as Miranda freezes him out entirely. You made your choices, buddy.

Speaking of people who made choices they regret, Makee is back with the Covenant. One leader snipes at her for not bringing back Master Chief’s head, even though she accomplished all of her other mission objectives brilliantly. (And probably handed them the location of Reach, if I’m right and they don’t have that info already.) She’s looking for reassurance after everything she saw and did in human space, asking if she gets to come on the Great Journey. They answer in the creepiest way possible, and she notices and hides her mutilated finger. (You can just tell them the nasty humans tore it out!)

Cortana is coming clean about being able to take John over, which I’m frankly surprised and impressed by. John’s response just seems to be “sure, whatever, of course” which, fair. It’s been a hell of a Standard Galactic Time Unit. (Still doesn’t clear up whether she’s had the ability all along and why she didn’t use it during his 'test', but w/e.) After a very Galaxy’s Edge-style thrill ride through the gravitational fields (are there piloting levels in the games or just FPS?), wherein we learn that these people don’t stow their gear for crap and Vannak learns the term ‘spaghettification’, we arrive at Planet CG!

Wrapping up the Reach arc, Miranda has a final showdown with her mother while her dad watches through the monitors. She flatly explains that Halsey’s been sentenced to death and leaves, appearing to think that it’s justice for all her mother’s done (and emotionally I quite agree). I was waiting to see what escape plan Halsey would cook up—except she already pulled it off, as Miranda figures out when Halsey collapses, seizing, in the interrogation room. It’s another flash clone, designed to die the way the Spartan kids’ clones all did. Miranda tries to demand Halsey’s whereabouts as the clone flatlines. Once again, Halsey’s fucked-up convictions are so strong that even the versions of herself created just to die aren’t willing to give her up. I assume the other Halsey is the ‘package’ Adun claimed was secure (did he ever realize that he was with the clone, not the original, and him dying or getting arrested was part of the plan? Apparently not.) Unanswered: whether Keyes was in on Halsey’s clone escape plan. Also unanswered: whether Halsey expected people to buy her death, or whether it was just meant to be a temporary decoy (in which case it worked perfectly). Halsey is shown getting ready to head off to parts unknown, while Miranda and the others hunt her down.

At last, the showdown. Makee gets ready for the ceremony alone, and we find out that even the Covenant leader we thought was fond of her despises her, and that the ceremony involves her death (either as a necessary part of the activation or as a ritual sacrifice they’re choosing to make, it’s not clear). Poor Makee. Remembering Kwan’s accusations against Master Chief, it’s clear they have equal amounts of blood on their hands, for equivalent reasons—they people they were raised by turned them into weapons, pointed them, and said shoot, and neither of them learned to question this in time. But one of them is the protagonist, and the other was raised by the protagonist’s enemies. There’s only a few ways this can go.

The battle commences, as all FOUR of the Spartans drop from the sky and fight their way in. I have a lot of the same complaints as I did in the other big battle scene—four people, no matter how skilled, are too likely to be separated and defeated in detail for me to buy this as a viable strategy. Especially once the waves of goons start showing up and nobody’s using good tactics. Where are the defensible positions? Where are the bottlenecks and chokepoints? Bring down some of these pillars or something! Hell, don’t you people have mines or grenades? Sigh.

It also brings to mind my questions about the relative tech bases here—sure, Spartans themselves are hardcore and everything, but their weapons and armor shouldn’t be heads and shoulders above the rest of the UNSC, that doesn’t make sense, unless they’re made of stuff so ungodly expensive the gov won’t shell out to outfit the rest of the troops with them. They clearly have a bunch of alien tech they’re backward-engineering, too. Why are the regular troops so ineffective, on both sides, vs the Spartans? And why are human troops so ineffective vs the Covenant? If 1 Spartan = 100 marines but 1 Spartan can defeat 100s of aliens… shouldn’t regular troops have a better chance than we’ve seen? At least two or three marines per alien? Are humans roughly equivalent to the Covenant, or is the Covenant far ahead? Or is it a resource issue?

Either way, with just four, Silver Team kicks ass, but not enough ass to pull off their mission objective. Riz and Vannak go down and Kai and Master Chief are overwhelmed. Fortunately for them, Makee is watching and when John goes down, she impulsively uses the combined artifact to blast the whole plateau practically flat. A star map presumably to the Halo lights up the sky (I assume Cortana records it.) Unfortunately for John (and for Makee), this sucks John into the Halo vision with Makee, leaving him out of commission. It’s unclear what powers she has with it and what she would have chosen to do, because Kai, unable to wake John any other way, shoots Makee to break her connection to the artifact.

It brings John back just in time to see her die, try to rejoin the fight, and realize it’s hopeless… for him. He asks Cortana to finally merge with him to retrieve the artifact and save the team. After some arguing, she does, and the newly-empowered Master Chief, with Kai and AIR SUPPORT, Cortana, where was THAT five minutes ago?—manage to get the team and the artifact (but not Makee’s body) onto the ship and away. Cortana/Chief manages to save Riz. Kai, having noticed that John didn’t activate the artifact when he hauled it aboard, asks if it’s him in there. Cortana/Chief doesn’t respond.

And there we leave them. The Covenant has lost both of these artifacts, though we know they have others, and the person they needed to activate them. The UNSC now has both these pieces and the chance to find more, but no one to activate them unless Cortana can disentangle herself from John. And both sides presumably have the (according to the irate Covenant elders, partial) star map to the Halo.

Whatever it actually is.

Sooo, answering your question. Obviously, in a real fight I would literally lose to everyone in the roster because even a flight of stairs defeats my ass everyday when I go to class. However...if you want something funny and stupid...

I would beat Iosef in an FPS game, doing a incomprehensible amount of psychic damage so that he ends up just laying on the floor and crying.

I would beat Tracker by convincing him to invest in a crypto scam. Robbing him of his life, financially.

I would beat Zero by catfishing him, pretending to be John Wick on a High-Table Grindr or whatever they have. I would arrange a meeting, where Zero think it's a date and John thinks it's an assassination attempt. Basically I will make John kill him for me. And that's it I reached my quota of "being silly on the internet" for today
