Day 23: a crossover or AU fic

Draco/Harry, 35k, E

Summary:

The tides of Draco’s accidental magic pull him under and leave him gasping. There’s a hungry ache that sits deep in his bones, growing worse every day. Soon it’s all he’ll be, a starving skeleton clawing at its throat. He needs a solution. Unfortunately, that solution looks an awful lot like Harry Potter.

I hope to God that Hogwarts Eighth Year counts as an AU because I just HAD TO include this fic. And while it’s still anonymous no less!

As you know from my day 7 rec I absolutely adore bond fics – and this one de-li-vers. It has all the elements of the trope – the forced proximity, the resulting change of dynamics, the h/c in between, the yearning later on!

The boys are actually pretty mature in this characterisation so they get over themselves relatively quickly (not without hiccups of course, not with our Harry dearest responding to Draco coming out as gay with "That's nice" xd Which is why I used the word mature; I guess you can be that and still completely clueless xd).

Relationship angst aside, we get to focus on the plot and the mistery of the magic exchange between Harry and Draco. And what an alluring take on magical theory it takes! It reminded me of Beholden by @faith2wood (which I have recced as my day 12 fic) and I mean it as a huge complement <3

One more aspect of the writing I have to highlight is the delightful way the boys feel each other’s magic is described:

His magic is a cool breeze on Draco’s cheeks.

It has his heart rabbiting, a sudden swell of magic rising in his chest. It’s less a roar this time and more a crashing wave, rushing up his spine and across his shoulders, drawing blood to his cheeks. He tries to breathe with it and finds he can—an easy breath that feels soothing in his lungs.

Potter’s magic, filling the air again now that he’s close, feels horribly like crawling into his bed at home.

His presence is like standing with your eyes closed in the warm spring air and still knowing exactly where the sun is.

And then they refer to it as „their” magic and suddenly they can feel each other’s emotions and SHARE DREAMS and I am melted into the floor. Now imagine the sex scenes with all the magic between them. You’re welcome ^^

Potter’s anger flares into the room suddenly and Draco shivers at the heat it sends over his skin. Finally. “Why do you keep following me around?” “As it so happens, I’ll die if I don’t.” Potter’s jaw ticks. “You know that’s not what I mean.” “Then use the proper tense, Potter. I know you’re a bit dull, but—” He has Draco by his shirt collar in the next second, and Draco can’t help but grin. “There you are.”

“What are you looking for in the Forest?” “You cry in your sleep.”

Communication skills at your finest Harry, good job xd

Draco is on the cliff edge again. His bed is behind him, lonely, safe. Cold. And in front of him, staggering, terrifying: Potter.

Jump baby jump!!!

„No one to tuck you in and tell you how special you are?” Potter’s face falls, silence with it. Draco feels a sudden chord of pain in his magic. He swallows down the need to fix it.

Yes, please, fix it!!

They don’t breathe a word of it during the day, but the bags under Potter’s eyes are finally fading. Now, Draco simply lifts his duvet in offering when Potter comes out of the bathroom and he crawls in without a word, always a careful distance between them, always a studied silence until they both fall asleep.

Oh my, the “all is normal in daylight as long as we don’t talk about the in between ” 😅

Harry Potter Rec Fest Day 11 - Dark Fics

I don't seek out a lot of dark fics. I'll read them if they cross my browser or kindle, but I gravitate more toward fluff and save the dark stuff for "published fiction" or just "the news". That's probably why these fics stuck out to me particularly, because I wasn't left with the warm fuzzy feeling. Some dark things for @hprecfest day 11 ...

The Unknown Door by @amywaterwings Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 60,970 Rating: E

This fic was part of @hderised last year. Boy does it pack a wallop of feelings. Get ready for addiction, death, child neglect, torture, people experiencing homelessness, discrimination against all kinds of people and creatures. It's a lot. It's also really real because of all that. @amywaterwings creates an apartment building filled with unique and uniformly loveable (but still dark) original characters and the lore goes deep. A beautifully despairing peek into a less magical part of Magical Britain and how hopeless it can feel even when you are in a position to help. It does have a happy ending though!

Death is Not Fit to House Love by @starlitsilvereyes Pairing: Draco x Harry Word count: 20,919 Rating: E

I'm hesitant to say too much about this fic for fear of spoiling it. This was written for @hd-fan-fair Career Fair this year and I screamed aloud at the end. Featuring Politician Draco and Hit-Wizard Harry Potter.

Serious content warnings: Character death, discussion of suicide, violence

A Nasty Piece of Work written and recorded by @picascribit Pairing: Fenrir Greyback/OFC Word count: 11,198 Length: 1:10:00 Rating: E

Hard to believe that this is written by the same @picascribit who brought us cute little Scorbus at Protego Club with all their queer friends. This fic is traditional DARK. Like make you sick to your stomach dark. But also such an interesting character study. Recorded excellently, as usual, by the author themself.

Serious content warnings: Violence, Rape, Non-con, Underage, Major Character Death - this checks all the boxes, literally all the boxes on AO3

A beautiful, poetic multi-ending fic taking place during the second war. Draco has Hanahaki disease and it's angsty, but it has a happy ending. Mostly it's just like floating through sad space, but like, in a good way.

@starlitsilvereyes writes an incredible story here. It's non-linear, which I personally think is incredibly difficult and impressive. It's suspenseful, has jump scares, and ends with horrible horrible things happening. Possibly the darkest fic I've ever read. Enjoy!

The tattoos he’s familiar with—the bright oranges and reds of the feather on his forearm that wraps around Draco’s Mark. It doesn’t obscure it—because Harry knows Draco thinks of it as something he will have to carry till the day he dies—but it takes away some of the starkness, takes away its focus.

H/D Erised 2021 Submission Information

We’ve started getting some questions about headers and submission info, so here’s the relevant information for the 2021 fest!!

Our full Rules and Guidelines page can be found here and our FAQ is here. We also recommend having a look at our H/D Erised Style Guide. All three have loads of information about submission and posting. For quick reference, here are the highlights!

Important dates Fic and Art due: November 1 Posting starts: December 1

Submitting On or before November 1, email your completed assignment as an attachment to the mods at hderised@gmail.com. Fic must be in .doc, .docx, or .rtf format. Art must be in .jpg, .png, or .tif format. Subject line: Submission - [your name] gift for [your giftee’s name].

Authors: We cannot accept shared google docs or PDFs. If you are using google docs to write, you can go to: “File > Download as > Microsoft Word (.docx)” to get a downloadable, attachable word file.

Please make sure you check that you have attached the most recent version of your work  before submitting. Please make sure that your document meets the requirements outlined below:

Work must be beta’d, and suggestions from your beta must be addressed, and should not remain in the document as comments or track changes.

Written work must either include no HTML coding or simple HTML coding as detailed in the Style Guide. Using more complex HTML, CSS, and workskins can compromise anonymity; it may be possible, but you must check with the mods first.

If you are submitting a chaptered work, all chapters must be in a single document, and you must clearly indicate the start of each new chapter. Please let us know in your submission email that you’d like us to upload your fic to AO3 in chapters.

Headers (available below!) must be included in submission emails. For authors, they must also be included at the top of the written work.

Author’s and artist’s notes can’t compromise anonymity. We may ask creators to edit or wait to post their notes if they name frequent betas and cheerleaders (though initials are great!), reference inside jokes or specific events that may be recognizable to their readers, use the same language that’s often used in their non-anonymous author’s notes, link to social media accounts, etc.

While accessibility needs vary between readers and devices, we ask creators to avoid common accessibility pitfalls, like using long lines of asterisks as line breaks.

Getting an Extension If the due date is getting close enough for you to be sure you’ll need an extension please email the mods. Note: discussions for extensions need to take place before November 1. If we haven’t heard from you before or by the end of the 1st and don’t receive your completed work, we may need to assume that you have dropped and call in a pinch-hitter.

All emails requesting extensions must have your Work In Progress attached (not as a shared doc, please!) and must include an estimation of how much more time you’ll need as well as your anticipated final word count. This goes for 2nd and 3rd extensions as well.

We will not grant extensions without a copy of your work as it stands so far. This goes for everyone, whether you’ve been in fandom for eons and have participated in a million previous fests or are a brand-spanking-newbie, and even if you’ve been the most reliable fest participant in all of fandom. Your WIP must be submitted as an attachment with the email asking for your extension; if it is art, it must be scanned or photographed, if it is fic it must be typed up. Please plan ahead to make sure that you can do this before making your request.

Based on the extent of your WIP, we will decide on whether or not to give you an extension. Please note that, given the number of moving pieces in an exchange fest, we may not be able to give you as much as an extension as you’ve requested; for instance, asking for a two-week extension does not guarantee that you will receive a two-week extension. If we determine that you have not made sufficient progress on your fic, you may be dropped from the fest.

Humiliation licks up his rigid spine, but along with it is a prickle of ill-advised anticipation, a foolish thrill at what Malfoy might do. Harry is a little lost. His house is rejecting him and his friends and family are busy and moving on. To cope, he turns to what’s tried and true; following Draco Malfoy. The first time was an accident. Sort of.

This sounds like my favourite post-war Harry, lost in the world, with Draco somehow always in his way ^^

An HDErised Rec and an HDErised Claiming

An Erised Rec @noeeon and I were so, so lucky to get an amazing Erised gift from @dictacontrion that we LOVED. Dicta wrote us a beautiful 130K novel that centers around Draco coming back to England from a life he's built in Paris in order to help cure Harry from an affliction that revolves around the Elder Wand. I don't want to give the plot away, but suffice it to say this fic has a really intriguing examination of wandlore, magical politics galore, and a Millicent with whom I am absolutely in love. Weeks after I read it, I still have images from this fic lingering in my mind--the apple orchard for one!--and bringing me shivers of joy. It's a wonderful read, and I'm hoping to have time this week to curl up with it again. (Thank you so, so much, Dicta--I can't tell you how much happiness you brought me with this story!!! I wish I could go back and leave more kudos on AO3 for you!) Such a wonderful fic--please do give it a read!

An Erised Claiming And as for the fic @noeeon and I wrote together, well. :) It was a bit of a novel as well, written for the lovely @blithelybonny. I had a hankering this fall to write a werewolf fic, particularly one with a few Gothic overtones, and my wife, bless her, was more than willing to indulge my wishes. Together we came up with an Edwardian magical AU (with Noe reining me in so our plot didn't get too terribly wild, lol, because she is a brilliant, brilliant plot strategist) and we dove into the London of 1910, complete with suffragettes, murders, early forensics, werewolf politics, secret societies, rather a lot of Harry/Draco sex, a touch of Yeats' et al's Golden Dawn, and a bit of Tom Riddle, pre snake-nose. It was great fun to write, and by our second round of edits, we'd ended up with 116K's worth of Edwardian drama. (So together, Dicta and we were responsible for almost 250K of fic...whoops!) I really love this fic, and Noe and I are ridiculously proud of it. We'd love for you to take a look at it, if you get a chance.

Inspector Harry Potter--widely believed to be the lead candidate for next Deputy Head Auror--is called in to investigate a possible magical crime. To make matters worse, his occasional lover and former school-nemesis, Viscount Draco Malfoy, now billing himself as a consulting criminologist, shows up at the crime scene to aid in the investigation of the suspicious death. Neither man will go away from the case unchanged, but will their combined forces be enough to fight the tide of danger that is sweeping London in the summer of 1910? And if they plumb the depths of the case, what bones of the past will they uncover?)
