Yui definitely fell for Ayato first in HDB. From the start, she kept calling him cute and imagining them as friends. After Ayato gave her her first REAL kiss, she began picturing them as lovers, and he kept giving her more of that "cuteness aggression" that only deepened her feelings. Ayato, on the other hand, seemed to start falling for her after waking up from a nightmare, when Yui willingly offered him her blood and confessed that she actually enjoyed it. By the end of HDB, Ayato definitely loves Yui, but it’s clear she fell harder for him, especially given the things she does in the After Story.

Anyway, as for MB, we’re not sure who exactly fell for the other first. All we know, based on his route description, is that they both had feelings for each other even before the Mukamis arrived.

“With the appearance of the Mukami brothers targeting the heroine Yui, the bond between the two who have feelings for each other becomes even more intense. Ayato, who desires her heart, not just as prey, hides his painful feelings behind his rough words and actions.”

I think it was pretty clear that Yui fell for Ayato the fastest, since in the second chapter, after taking the truth, she confessed to him. Ayato also seemed happy when Yui asked for his kisses and bites there, so it’s pretty obvious he had feelings for her too. I also remember a scene from one of the earlier chapters where a classmate gave Yui two cinema tickets, and she wanted Ayato to go with her. Even though Ayato claimed to dislike movies, he was still willing to go with her. It’s clear he liked Yui; if he didn’t, he wouldn’t have done something he wasn’t interested in.

The problem with his MB route lies in how Yui constantly objectified him and pushed him to return her feelings, without ever considering his struggles. I also understand that Ayato’s past gave him trust issues, leading him to the belief that "I won’t make anyone special again because they won’t reciprocate my feelings." His intense bloodlust, likely worsened by the fig curse, pushed him to the edge too. But honestly, it was sooo tiring to watch. It felt like it was the same scenario over and over again, and I can't help but think that everything could have been resolved if they just COMMUNICATED earlier. Yet, I suppose the writer wasn’t feeling inspired when they wrote that route. 🤷🏼‍♀️

As for the After Story, sorry not sorry, but it’s undeniably the best-written one in the entire franchise. The way Ayato went to university for Yui, despite the deep trauma studying caused him, was incredibly moving. He didn’t pressure her to get a job; instead, he wanted to surprise her by building a good future for both of them, which I find really admirable. It’s also heartwarming how Yui continuously praised Ayato and helped him with his studies. In the Vampire Ending, she waited years for him to wake up from the coma, and all those years he kept searching for her in his dreams, therefore in the end, they both fell deeply in love with each other.

On top of that, there’s this official short story, where Ayato mentions not remembering when he started liking Takoyaki but then Yui rizzes him up with this confession:

I'm not a dnd player or even a ttrpg player, so sorry if this is a dumb question, but in one of your latest dnd complaints (love these posts btw) you mentioned the d20 pass/fail system as a negative. Could you maybe explain why? The concept reminds me a lot of how disco elysium's skill check system works, which I enjoyed a lot, and I think I'm just not knowledgeable enough to see any meaningful difference here?

the key difference is that disco elysium consistently 'fails forward' -- when you fail a check in disco elysium hdb often does or saus something ridiculous and you get to experience some of the best dialogue of the game (ice-cop-hat-fuck-show, i want to have fuck with you, mr. evrart is helping me find my gun, limbic system karaoke, going to the island with cuno). the plot or scenario develops--the failure changes the situation in some way, or leads to a new interaction that spotlights a side of a character you wouldn't have seen otherwise.

and while this could happen in your dnd game if you houseruled it in, as the rules stand, the default outcome on a failure is 'nothing happens'. and this doesn't have to be the case! powered by the apocalypse / forged in the dark games have for a long time now made 'failing forward' (as in, failure always results in Something Happening, the plot moving forward, even if that thing is bad) a core part of their resolution systems. that's the main reason why binary 'you do the thing' or 'you don't do the thing' systems are kind of lame.

i mean, i think anyone who's played dnd can attest that casting a save-or-suck spell and having the enemy save or use a legendary resistance, or swinging for your one attack for a turn and missing, fucking sucks and is disappointing and boring. and these mechanics are in the game because of dnd's origin as an adaptation of wargames -- but in wargames you're usually rolling tons of dice because you're making 'saves' or 'to hit' rolls for dozens of individual units, so the chances of nothing happening are extremely slim.

so ultimately the difference is that failed rolls in dnd can (and most often do) result in boring anticlimax. also, because disco elysium uses 2d6, the roll distribution is a bell curve, which means you can be more sure you're going to be able to do something you're good at, while dnd is wildly swingy.

Now let me write you an essay

So, I think that both HDB and JV are more similar to each other than is shows at first glance, they are both very sensitive (only one is hiding it well under a bitchface and snarky comments) and their work is slowly killing them, plus, especially in Harry's case, Jean has his coping mechanisms for that (ekhm, anger), probably being hated by society for his job where he technically is supposed to help them, only adds to it.

In the post-apo scenario, both the society and the RCM disappear and with them a great source of both Harry's (and Jean's) problems. Of course, there will be all stages of grief at the beginning, and probably some sort of survivor guilt, but eventually he would come to terms with the fact that it happened and they are still here and will manage to deal with it. Maybe even have some fun, because if everything's gone and there is nothing worse that can happen besides death (and such an event probably reevaluates one's sense of the value of own life) and your only goal is to survive to the next day and try to make the most of what you've got... (I agree very much with the comments under that post about Jean, post-apocalyptic worlds are an escapist fantasy, you can do whatever with no consequence, and your life goals become very basic, primitive even)

I feel like at the end of the day Jean would just enjoy his solitude and simple life goals, and Harry... There is a chance that a literal apocalypse would be an event shaking enough to give him a new point of view on life itself and have a sort of "carpe diem" arch. I can see him trying to get the absolute maximum of the time he is given with his two best mates and a dog.

As for Kim, I think that the beginnings would be very hard for him, and would break him in a way. His life was quite all about the work, and now he suddenly doesn't have any goal and everything he cared for is gone... so it's time to get into survival mode. Paradoxically I think that would make him get along with Harry and Jean much better, he would be able to relate to those two broken dudes more. I think that Kim would be the one who will lack some sort of a bigger goal the most, but he will manage. He's not a quitter and he would probably eventually set his goal as "keeping these two here alive".

ANYWAY, this AU is meant to be a silly and light one for me to play (and have some rest from EOE deep analysis), so I could dig deeper into the psychological consequences, all the potential traumas and problems, but that's not the point (let's see how long can I hold back lol) i just wanted a scenario where they will be relatively happy and it's not my fault it takes an actual apocalypse :shrug:

　Cordelia's spite for Karlheinz's second wife, Beatrix, and the announcement of her pregnancy is what bore Ryuuto, from her affair with Richter. Isolated from Karlheinz, his children, and much of the world, Ryuuto was raised almost exclusively by Richter. However, Cordelia's manipulation over Ryuuto saw him become heavily dependant on her as his only female figure in life, using him for her own entertainment.

　After Cordelia's death, Ryuuto's immense distraught saw him swear to revive her, with his father's help. Realising his half-brothers were to blame, he vowed to get revenge, too. Appearing to Yui Komori* - who harbours Cordelia's heart - he intends to steal her away, and initiate the awakening to revive his mother. 

* Ryuuto's story begins during Haunted Dark Bridal, not unlike the other Sakamaki's, and continues on through to the current games.

　However, much like the other Sakamaki sons, Ryuuto is available to be romanced in a route of his own. If not selected, however, he will also appear as a minor antagonist in some of the other boy's routes (in their mini chapters, which are currently still being released).

In some routes of HDB, it was said Yui/MC will become a vampire if she got sucked until reaching the point of awakening.

I quietly hope Rejet will made a game/cd/scenario where MC is already bevoming a vampire. The only similar scenario is that one Laito heaven but I crave for more.

happy launch day, kayo! she's my little pookie i love her so much that i bully her constantly through the narrative

in honor of today, i'll be dumping some REALLY old doodles (really old = two-three months ago) when i started working on her! unlike most of my dumps, i'll be describing and giving more context to the drawings! think of it as a little timeline of her development :D

drawing 1: our earliest kayo?!

this was dated january 17 2023. yeah. 2023. this year.

geez, was that really my art style just three months ago?

yes, unfortunately. though i'll attribute the fact that kayo looks 12 here mostly to the fact that i was still getting used to using an ipad to draw--still, you can really see that i had her design 90% down from the start. just changed her parting a little and removed the flower accessory + little ombre(?) in her hair.

at first, she was going to be a LOT closer to yui, but then if she was, she would've intervened as early as more blood, which was not something i was aiming for. plus, isn't it more fun thinking that she barely knows her (and yet pulls the stunt of taking her place for her sake... what a loser)

also, at first, she was going to just be straight up meaner for no reason. like literally just the worst person you can think of, but a problem with that is that she would definitely get killed if she was just horrible and toxic. plus, that was kind of boring on my end as well, so she kind of turned into a meowmeow.

adding to the old concept though, all her endings were supposed to be bad endings! then i scrapped that really quickly when i changed her personality...

drawing 2: our earliest hunter!

same day as the first drawing... yeouch.

as you can see, her hair was supposed to be a lot neater--and flatter--as a hunter. the cross clip is a lot smaller, and her palette was all over the place. like come on, why is her coat pink??

speaking of which, i changed hunter kayo to being a little messier than her old version because of a change in personality. this proto-hunter kayo still feels emotions very well. in fact, even more intensely than bride kayo. she's constantly angry--for what she went through as a young girl, for losing her eye--just a lot of things.

drawing 3: early outfit dump

i made the file for this drawing on january 19, but i believe i updated it as late as early march.

as you can see, it's really just outfit concepts. most of them are the same as the current outfit concept art--thanks to, well, me updating this file until march. you might be familiar with the three on the right, and the lost eden + dark fate outfit is practically the same as the one i posted. the hdb/mb outfit changed the most out of those three: i suctioned it to kayo's body to emphasize her figure more lol (i am the biggest kayo simp in the end)

as for the first two, you can see they were labelled for chaos lineage and lunatic parade! the chaos lineage outfit is probably already like 90% down for me, but the lunatic parade one is peculiar because, well, i scrapped it entirely. it's a cute outfit, for sure, but i didn't think it was kayo's style in the end. perhaps it might get the same hdb/mb outfit treatment and get tweaked to match her better, but i think her current lunatic parade design is solid!

drawing 4: early cg concepts

honestly, this is still really good, and i'm still planning on adding this scenario to laito's route. it's just that, once again, kayo is suffering from the bug-eyed twelve year old syndrome i was going through since january. plus i was (still am) bad at drawing men, so laito kind of came out looking like a really strange looking lady lol. it's so embarrassing i even had to crop it out.

drawing(s) 5: whoa sailor outfits?!

i actually drew this just two weeks after the last one--march 10th! you can clearly see my art style shifting at this point; i'm starting to think it's the switch from sketching with a soft brush to a hard brush.

this was, if you didn't already guess, in honor of the aquamarine series! of course, there are two: one for the hunter and one for the bride!

i have this running theme of "what would reiji (biggest discreet pervert) make bride kayo wear?" and that man loves his kayo legs, so naturally she had to wear thigh highs and an awkwardly short skirt. at least hunter kayo got away with just a crop top.

you can see something hanging on the hunter's waist--it's actually a demon hunting relic!

drawing 6: hunter kayo in ryotei au cgs?!

now, hunter kayo actually doesn't attend ryotei at any point of the series. it just so happens that i thought she'd look really hot in the uniform, and ta-da--i made an au! being an au, it's not canon, but i like to think she has a small route with shuu that doesn't really end well as you'd expect.

still, the sight of her kissing him as he bites on her knife is very very cool. keep up the good work hunter!

i love humans with animal features (i.e. not humanoid animals aka what you'd typically think of when you think of furries...) and genshin already devastated me with not only keqing but DEHYA being fake catgirls, so to recover emotionally i naturally made kayo a catgirl. ougggg she's so cute

BONUS 2: a kayoyui route?!

Yes. and it's finished. i just have to make the cgs and post it.

i mostly made it as a kind of exercise in making routes, since, well, i have to start making a lot. it only has five individual scenarios in the dark, manic, and ecstasy section, but it still has a prologue and epilogue. there are also only two endings!

it also serves to delve a bit more into the hunter's character, since bride kayo is the main focus of the blog. let's give her a little love, yknow!! even if she can't give any back...

I really love Shu’s development too! It’s amazing seeing how love can change one like that. I mean Shu without love is a really bad person😅 He provokes Laito to drop his facade only for drama, he takes advantage of ayato’s kindness and abandons him to death, he manipulates subaru to take part in his dirty acts and keeps beefing with reiji sometimes but once he gets a taste of love, he starts loving his family and being a better person. Boys like ayato, subaru and Azusa were always kind hearted but it’s nice seeing how characters that were once really bad slowly start getting better thanks to yui!

now I'm curious, I haven't gone deeply in HDB and MB lore because of the poor treatment of Yui so i only read translations of main scenarios like dark prologue, 6-10, epilogue. as I think 1-5 are just some random scenarios irrelevant to plot (it caused me so much confusion in the start because how random starts those chapters had) and i probably went for manga more and started reading whole routes from DF.

so tell me anon about the things you said cuz I'm curious now, it's okay if you don't remember from what specific chapter they are from, you can elaborate it more and tell me what shu did 👀

Your analyzes regarding the boys falling in love before/after Yui are very good and believable, but it's a bit moot since the CDs aren't related to the games storyline. In the games after Yui's death, very few of the boys choose to follow her. We can also give as an example the bad ends of some of the diaboys. If any of them had decided to end Yui's life by their own will or because they were crazy I don't think they would have followed her. A good example of this is the bad endings on Ayato's HDB, MB and CL routes. In the first two games he ends her life himself while in the last one he decides to drink her blood before dying. Also, it's not out of the question that after they lose her they go on with their lives and everything is as before, this of course doesn't rule out having sex with other girls to at least forget the pain for a little bit (Laito does that when he loses Cordelia ).

P.S. This is just my opinion and I do not intend to cause hatred or controversy with this request. I've been following the blog for a long time now and I always love how seriously you delve.

Ummm.... interesting point. Let's check this better. You see all games and CDs have separated storyline. About CDs it's right they have different storyline from the games but at the end they all are official from Rejet. Except of Tokuten CDs we can consider other CDs as canon scenarios. ( as we all know Tokuten CDs are just fun and cute scenarios. )

I'm trying to say that Drama CDs are like what if scenarios. So what if Yui dies when she and her lover have a good relationship. So they will follow her after death. So that's why we can say that they really can't leave without her if they really love her.

About games I don't think we can consider HDB endings or even MB endings real love as some diaboys are still fighting with their own emotions. My point is when they really love someone from the bottom of their heart they will follow them even after death. I doubt diaboys really fell in love with Yui in the first games. As you can see they really treated her badly in first games but after MB they really had development so we just can consider their love real when they treat Yui good. That's why after MB you can see how they grow it's also same for Drama CDs.

So my last answer: yes if they really love someone they can't love someone else after them.

I did state that Jean was a 99% jerk and that we only observed him for a single week. 🤔 But alrite we can go down the rabbit hole.

There's this one scene where Jean gave Harry enough time to find his badge, so HDB didn't get in deep trouble with the Captain.

Throughout the whole game, Jean has done the very bare minimum of being a functional "partner", out of spite for being ditched during HDB's breakdown/meltdown/rage-quit?

I noticed that Jean holds some level of respect for Judit and Cuno, even though he's of a higher rank.

Most of the "redeeming qualities" comes from hypothetical yet possible scenarios which I like to read about from fanfiction. Can't disprove or confirm those possibilities. They're like Schrödinger's Cat of "Jean could be a better person outside of the game". Just like how Harry is the Schrödinger's Cat's of "Is he a good or bad person? Will he help or hurt others more?"

The main thing i like about Jean is that he's really fun to bully ngl. Also the Jeancourse fights. Peak amusement

It's not like "character finds themselves in dire conditions where it's very easy to empathize with them AND MANAGES TO BE AN OVERPROPORTIONALLY HUMONGOUS ASS ABOUT IT" is unheard of, either. Dros. René. Nilsen. Evrart. Ambrosius probably. Dolores Dei also probably. Tereesz. You name 'em. But no it's just Jean for whom the circumstances excuse any degree of cruelty.

Don’t know if you noticed as well but Yui’s personality started worsening as the games passed by. In HDB I found most of her reactions to her circumstances and background realistic. She had some dumb moments here and there but they weren’t as frequent as in the other games. Sometimes I wonder why they decided to change her so much but I don’t see it as a good idea T_T

Everyone keeps calling her out on things she is supposed to already know, and that’s sometimes hard to witness, because it gives me second hand embarrassment. 😭😭

At the same time, I remember hearing many Japanese players say they don’t like it when the heroine is more successful than they are. So, I guess writing her that way makes her come across as more approachable. To be honest, I’m not a big fan of overly serious or mature heroines either, which is why Yui still suits my taste better.

She kneels down besides him, slowly wrapping her arms around the Vampire.

Sharon: You must have been terrified, huh?

Shuu: ...

Sharon: Everything will be okay now though.

Sharon starts to stroke his head.

Sharon: ( This feels so surreal... )

( I never thought I’d have to comfort a Vampire like this. )

( However, I just can’t stand seeing him like this... )

( It doesn’t matter if he’s a Vampire or a human. I can tell by his eyes. This is real fear. )

( I always thought Vampires had nothing to fear since they’re immortal. )

( But I suppose that was naive of me. )

( Perhaps Vampires and humans...Are more similar than I initially thought? )

Shuu: Uu...

Sharon: ( Hmー He’s still shivering. )

( Is there nothing I can do to soothe him? )

...Ah!

She begins to loosen her ribbon and collar.

*Rustle rustle*

Sharon: Shuu-san...Please have some of my blood.

( I can barely believe I’m saying this but... )

( I’m sure this is the best way to calm a Vampire down. )

Sharon carefully guides his face towards her neck.

Shuu: ...

He bites her.

Sharon: ーー Uu! 

( He’s not holding back at all... )

( As if he’s desperately trying to get every single drop... )

( It hurts butーー )

Shuu: ...

Sharon: ( His expression softened...His shoulders aren’t nearly as tense anymore either. )

( I guess my plan worked. )

I’m...glad...

She tightens her grip around him.

*Rustle*

Sharon: ( I’m sure we’ll both get scolded by the teachers later... )

( But for now...We can stay like this just a little longer... )

Laito considered himself a hard man to win over. He’d had his fair share of relationships and been with plenty of women, the previous one as different as the next. When he met Yui he’d had a reputation as a playboy. But the thing about being a playboy, he always thought in that private part of his heart, is that you’re tossed around just as much as you toss around others.

Yui was so unlike him. So different. The first time they knew each other intimately, on the altar of her church, there was a look in her eyes that told him she’d never forgive him. Laito told himself that he didn’t really care. But the more time they spent together the more that look softened.

“Laito, I don’t get this.” Yui mumbled, brow furrowed in confusion at the crossword puzzlebook in front of her. “’All you need, no score’... what does this clue mean?”

“Really, Bitch-chan?” He chuckled. “That one’s obvious.”

Yui gazed at him pleadingly from the other end of the sofa. “I’m still not very good, am I?”

Laito’s only response was a laugh. He set down his own book in favour of running his fingertips over her legs, which she’d thrown over his lap earlier that evening. Since when had they got this intimate? He wondered, watching her eyes run across the puzzle page over and over. Since when had she let down her guard around him, a vampire, so easily?

“Perhaps not, Bitch-chan.” He said softly.

She hummed in thought. And why, he wondered, had she decided to pick him? Forgive him for everything that he’d done to her? After he hurt her a thousand times over, toyed with her, cast her aside? Why had she stopped insulting him, screaming at him, calling him names? But more importantly, he realised, why had he become so weak?

“I’ve got it!” Yui suddenly yelled.

Laito watched her smile spread across her face. She pencilled the word in quickly, triumphantly, and the glow in her expression made the corners of his own mouth twitch up.

“The answer’s love.” Yui grinned.

Maybe it is, Laito thought. Maybe it is.
