You have lived your whole life with a bracelet of solid material on your wrist. Any attempt to remove it has been unsuccessful, but you have had it as long as you can remember. Today, it fell off.

When he looked into her eyes there was this new feeling for him. It washed over him with full speed, tor him down. Crashed his insides. Was it an emotion? Emotion? What did that mean? For him, it meant nothing because all his life he had never felt any of it. The bracelet kept that from him but now that he looked at her it almost overwhelmed him. A form of unknown origin.

Everyone in his city was born with this silver solid thing around their left wrist. The heart, so they said, the heart was the curse of all. The curse of the people, the curse that led to war and destroyed millions of lives, killed almost half the world and let them become emotionless. The new government had decided to give every newborn citizen this bracelet for only one reason. To not have any emotion. First: learn to speak. Second: learn to walk. Third: learn how to use the things around you. Fourth: learn to read. Fifth: learn to be a human being and always do the right thing.

The thing the government wants you to do because from time to time they let you have a little emotion, just as much as they think is right for you to have and to stay in line. To not make sudden moves against them or ask questions, as you don’t feel good in your home because of your emotion.

He knew all too well what love was, he had felt it but what he felt now that he looked into her eyes he had never felt before. It was still unknown.  He tried to figure it out and remembered the books. Love: A strong feeling of affection. Hunger: A feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, coupled with the desire to eat. Sleepy: Needing or ready for sleep. And so on. He knew a lot of emotion but hadn’t felt all yet. He could dedicate them to situations in his life.

This is what caused this. He saw her talking to another man and all of a sudden the emotion came over him, they allowed him to feel it. She had talked to other men before but this time he had lost control over himself. The emotion took over, made decisions for him.

Now without the bracelet, he felt everything but one thing stood out. The fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime. Guilt. How was he supposed to live with it?

As soon as he had stabbed her the bracelet fell off and he realized that they made him do it. It was their fault, not his. They fed him emotion he wasn’t able to control, wasn’t ready to feel yet. And he started asking himself if him always being against the bracelet was the right thing to think? What makes humans human? Emotion from the very first day? Experiencing everything from the start or being fed when the time is right? All he knew that all emotion at once meant destruction, at least for him and he couldn’t take it. While he was trying to get hold of the bracelet again and put it on his wrist it suddenly disappeared and as soon as the police were there he had nothing to defend himself anymore. No one had such a bracelet, it was only him. All along. Strange world.

Liverpool up to second after defeating Newcastle

Liverpool consolidated their place in the Premier League top four as they coasted to a comfortable victory after breaking Newcastle’s brief resistance.

With five minutes left of a wasteful first half for the home side, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain drove through Newcastle’s lines and played in Mohamed Salah for the forward’s 24th goal of the league season.

With no real outlet in attack, the Magpies were under constant pressure and buckled again when Sadio Mane swept the home side further ahead from Roberto Firmino’s pass – the 200th top-flight goal under manager Jurgen Klopp.

The win moves the Reds above Manchester United into second place – at least until their rivals play at Crystal Palace on Monday.

The gap to leaders Manchester City is 15 points, with Pep Guardiola’s side in action at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

Newcastle, whose best chance saw Loris Karius deny Mohamed Diame with a fine save just before half-time, drop to 16th after Swansea’s 4-1 home win over West Ham.

Rafael Benitez’s side are two points above the relegation zone with nine matches to play.

Salah just keeps scoring

This was Egypt forward Salah’s 32nd goal in 38 games in all competitions for Liverpool this season, and the 26th competitive match in which he’s scored.

By comparison, the entire Newcastle squad has managed 31 goals in total this term.

His finish – left-footed, of course, and through the legs of on-loan keeper Martin Dubravka – had a slight element of fortune in that it ricocheted in off Dubravka’s calf, but there was no doubt it came with the run of play.

Newcastle had been camped in banks of five but after Oxlade-Chamberlain, again impressive, pounced on a turnover in possession and opened up space with a determined run and Salah drifted into the perfect spot to put his side ahead. From there they never looked back.

Salah might have had a second, too. As he broke clear in injury time, it looked like he was shoved in the back by Jamaal Lascelles. Klopp reacted with total disbelief – unable to comprehend how a foul was not given.

In the context of Champions League qualification, Liverpool are now seven points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea, who have a game in hand, but first comes Tuesday’s last-16 second-leg with FC Porto in this year’s competition. They lead 5-0 lead from the first leg.

Bigger days to come for Newcastle

In recent matches at Manchester City and Bournemouth, Newcastle started games as they did here – stubborn and hard to break down.

But just as in their 3-1 defeat at City, and their 2-2 draw at the Cherries (after leading 2-0), resilience washed away.

The strategy appeared to be to keep Liverpool at bay for as long as possible and take any chances when they came.

Maybe if Diame’s curling shot – destined for the top corner – had not been brilliantly matched by Karius’ glove, the second half would have told a different story.

Regardless, this defeat at Anfield will not define how Newcastle’s season ends. There are more important games to come.

Three of their nine remaining league matches are against other teams threatened by relegation – and games at home to Southampton and Huddersfield are two of their next three.

Liverpool are unbeaten in 22 successive home league games against Newcastle United. They last lost to them at Anfield in April 1994.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Sport: “I very often forget the result during the game so even though we were 2-0 up I did feel we had to control the game better.

“But then when you step out on the pitch, you realise the wind, so it was difficult to do the right thing in the right moment. We scored two wonderful goals and for sure should have had a penalty but didn���t.

“They defended really well and are a good team with quality. We lost a few balls we don’t usually lose and Roberto Firmino didn’t have much support. It caused a few problems but not too many.”

Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez, also speaking to BBC Sport: “We were playing against a dangerous team. We know they have the pace up front. We managed to 40 minutes then it was a mistake.

“We had to go for it in the second half and were then more open. You have to keep the balance to be stronger in the defence and create chances in attack.

“We are learning but we are still making mistakes against teams. We are improving but this team has to get points.

“I am pleased with the fans. The Liverpool fans were really good for me.”

What’s next?

Liverpool play FC Porto at home in the Champions League last-16 second leg on Tuesday. They next play in the league at Manchester United on Saturday (12:30 GMT kick-off).

Newcastle’s next match is at home to Southampton in the league on Saturday (15:00).

You have lived your whole life with a bracelet of solid material on your wrist. Any attempt to remove it has been unsuccessful, but you have had it as long as you can remember. Today, it fell off.

The dark dull walls of the room made a stark contrast to the shimmering bracelet, laying between her naked feet. With every passing second it seemed to dim. A dying organism deprived of its life source.

Nyx stared at it for several moments, unmoving, waiting, expecting. Finally the bracelet died.

Something stirred within her. Propelled itself into being. Like a crushing tide swallowing her whole, consciousness arrived, pulling her back into the messy ocean that was existence.

Where the fuck am I? - is the constant mantra that runs like a freight train through her mind, shaking her to the core.

Time fractured and tender knees hit solid ground. Sharp Pain induced by cold metal suddenly became awareness. Lungs denied their service, sweat started running down her neck.

The world blurred to an unfocused photograph. Then suddenly, it was over. The moment had passed.

Reality snapped into presents and brought with it a clearness she never before experienced. She got to her feet once more, drinking in her surrounding anew. A smile, small as it might have been, tucked on the corners of her mouth.

He never was the coffee kinda guy. Made the teeth go yellow faster than you could’ve said DNA three times in a row. Not to mention the breath one cultivated after coffee. That and tea all around just tasted better. So there he was, Asher Hill, executive scientist of the human resource R&D Team. Brewing tea, escaping boredom, fighting the good fight.

A single touch on the smooth glass screen, embedded in the workspace in front of him, was all it took to activate the complex mechanism that ran the entire facility.

Slender, with high cheekbones, big radiant eyes, unaffected of course, by the faker than fake smile that was playing on rose petal shaped lips. An epitome of lifelessness. Asher’s fingers flew over the digital key board. An audible thumb on the glass accompanied each figure or letter that was send to the digital abyss of his data screen. The power, according to the related time stamps, has been shut down for about three hours. Three hours! Almost everything could happen in three hours.

“Am. Open the shutters! I need to check something”

Once the Windows were fully drawn up, the only thing that stared back at him was his own reflection, encased in utter and complete blackness. His eyes appeared shaded, and the glasses he wore blocked out all the detail.

The mere sight left Asher with an uneasy feeling.

“Put on the lights, please”

A sharp smack brought the main lights to life, flooding the rooms around Asher’s control station, showing him an outcome only his worst nightmares could have produced.

A van stops in front of you, and everyone inside looks exactly like you. One of them tosses you a gun and says “No time to explain, get in the van!”

You are, however, not surprised at all. As soon as you saw the white beast cross the corner, an internal force took over. A hive mind, undeniable, uncompromising, just relieved you of control.

“There’s no need to.” You tell him, and shrug off your jacket before getting in the car. Fifteen other versions of yourself watch and wait patiently. They understood, no, knew that by shrugging off your jacket you shrugged of your life up to this point. Like a shed skin, worthless.

“We’re to secure specimen 0016, an extremely dangerous and highly intelligent humanoid test subject.”

There was little to no visibility in the interior of the vehicle. The only source for light was a screen roughly the size of two chess boards packed together in the front of the storage area.

It glared back into sixteen pairs of eyes, as they internalized the information fed to them by your own grave voice. The synchronicity should at least have startled, if not outright terrified you.

It did not. In fact, it almost seemed natural.

Your inner workings and outside bearing somehow found the same frequency, you just got lost in the middle somewhere. Reduced to a mere bystander, you could just lay back and watch the whole thing unfold. So you did just that.

“Everybody ready your weapons, check your equipment, we’re almost at our destination.”

How and when you equipped yourself was not entirely clear. There was movement going on at some point and if you really had tried, you might’ve been able to recall putting on the tight black membrane suit and the faceless rubber mask, with its in-build sight and sound sensors.

You reacted instantly to your superior you. Somehow, you accepted this version of yourself as being in control and checked your charger clips and iron sight.

“Clear!”

The union of fifteen voices, matching in sound and expression, made the situation somehow more abstract. It was like being in a dream and constantly violating the measure of stimulation one could take before waking up, but staying fast asleep. By now, the world should have felt more real, but it slowly drifted away with every new detail.
