“Downtown” (Shitamachi) Analysis
By Fumiko Hayashi, Translated by Ivan Morris
Image: an old, warm-toned photograph of two large teapots on either side of a smaller one.
Introduction
This short story was first published in 1948, three years after WW2 ended, when the author was in her forties and living in Tokyo. In it a failing tea merchant strikes up a brief romance with an equally dire-straits man, and they find a simple happiness in each other’s company before circumstances tear them apart again.
It’s a story focused on the unpredictability of life, specifically in the context of the working class, and how hope and joy can exist within it.
Detailed Summary
A woman named Ryo hurries through the streets of Tokyo’s Yotsugi district, a working class neighborhood and previous bombsite, selling tea out of a rucksack. She’s been walking for miles in freezing winds- and so when she finally gets a customer, she asks to come inside. He warmly welcomes her in and they share a lunch. It’s revealed over the course of their conversation that her situation is poor; her husband has been forgotten in a Siberian prison and she struggles to support her son. He says he just got back from Siberia and reassures her about her failure to sell anything, citing both as just the luck of the draw. She becomes a regular in his area, and they strike up a small, sweet friendship. She learns his name is Tsuruishi and is curious about him, and he befriends her young son as well. On a day off work, the three of them go on a day trip downtown and visit the temple of the Goddess of Mercy. He tells her that until the air raids it was a towering pavilion, but she can’t visualize it. They spend the rest of the afternoon in an easy bliss, but it begins to rain and she is dismayed. They resolve to make the best of it and shelter in a teahouse. In the teahouse she worries where they will go; neither of their homes can fit three people, and so she rations out her money under the table and settles on an inn. She decides that though they can barely afford it, she wants to go see a movie and have something to eat as well. Tsuruishi likes her idea and tells her they’ll do it all the same, regardless of cost. They end up spending the night at the inn, and her husband looms over her. She feels guilty about staying the night with another man, but tells herself that it’s only because of the rain. While her son is asleep Tsuruishi whispers out to her- He says he used to be married, but came back to find his wife living with another man. She asks him if he was angry, but he states that there wasn’t much he could do about it. She wants to be with him but is hesitant- until he throws his arms around her, and she receives him. Later she and her boy go to visit him, only to find workmen there piling his things. When she pleads with them they state he was killed in a work accident. As she is hit with numbness she remembers what he told her the morning after, that he would look after her whatever happened, and she begins to weep while her son complains about hunger. The next day she goes downtown by herself, and after failing to sell she sits by the river and thinks that she is glad to have known him, and she is glad to have come to Tokyo. Just as she gets up to leave she sees a hut with women working inside, and they welcome her in and buy some tea with the little money they have. She watches them and reflects that they are alike, a sense of warmth coming over her.
Themes (and the symbolism supporting them)
Luck of the draw / Love
Rain- It represents unluckiness, but taking shelter and making the most out of that. Their good day is rained on, but they both try to make the most out of it anyway; exactly how they have both faced difficult lives and still enjoy the moments they have together. Also of note how they take shelter with each other, and her son, finding a symbolic shelter from the chaos within love. And in the morning the rain ceases as they hold each other. I may be reaching slightly but I think this could mean that they’ll find peace at the end of this (their lives). Another part is Tsuruishi himself, as he seems to accept any outcome that befalls him. But he’s not infallible, shown in how Tsuruishi made promises to her and believed he would be back by two. No one can predict their own fate, making a promise a silly concept. It's also important to acknowledge that he died in a workplace accident. Life is especially unpredictable for the poor and often relies on luck to make it through, more so than other classes. This segways into the next large idea, poverty. Quote: “Crazy, isn’t it– after getting through the war and Siberia and all the rest of it, to be killed like that.” A statement on how fragile and unpredictable life is.
Poverty; solidarity and instability
He promises to provide for them… food is a frequent subject, he gives and buys food for both Ryo and her son, and once he dies her son starts whining of hunger. In tradition the man is often the one to provide for the woman and child, and as every man she's had has died she is forced to take on that role (like many women of her era). But in poverty every day is a dangerous rolling of the dice, her life and her loved ones' lives depend on her tea sales.
Quote: “There was a simplicity and directness about this man that made her want to talk openly in a way she found difficult with more educated people.” I wasn’t able to properly detail it in my recap, but she likes Tsuruishi because he’s of a similar low class. In general the people who buy her tea in the story are often just as poor as she is, and are the kindest to her, showing understanding and compassion for her situation by welcoming her inside.
Optimism and hope
Throughout the story, despite money, she still values and pursues happiness: rationing out her money for the sake of a good time. Even after the despair of Tsuruishi’s death and her conditions she looks on the bright side, sitting by the lake and reflecting that she’s glad to have known him. She is grateful for the pleasure life does occasionally give her, and though she rarely sells continues to persevere and try every day. Her husband- He is a far away lost cause, it is implied that he is never coming home. He represents survivors' guilt, a painful memory and the looming shadow of the war affecting daily life and inhibiting Ryo to be truly happy. She feels guilty for moving on, but still lets herself have Tsuruishi despite the memory of her husband, showing her strong spirit conquering and allowing herself to enjoy the moment despite all the past.
Commentary on the war
Temple of mercy- In the context of the war, it exemplifies the sheer brutality of it, that Americans quite literally bombed the temple of mercy. Symbolism writes itself, nothing I can say there. But it being rebuilt much smaller… now, that's interesting, representing the vast peace of the Tokugawa period (it was once a towering pavilion) being destroyed in the 20th century. Now that the war is over it’s been reconstructed (a peace treaty) but it still can’t compare to half the way it once was.
Quote: “In the distance she could hear the plaintive wail of trumpet and saxophone emerging from some loud-speaker, mingling strangely with the sound of the wind whistling through the branches of the ancient trees.” Evidence of western influence on the Japanese, especially because she hears it as she stares at the temple with Tsuruishi. Combined together it could be thought that this is a metaphor for how an older Japan was destroyed by the war and rebuilt within a western context, as they later pass “American-style” billboards and buy her son a baseball cap. If it's not clear, the saxophone and trumpet are references to western culture (jazz) and ancient trees represent traditional Japanese culture.
Author
Fumiko Hayashi was born in 1904 to poor merchants (well, peddlers) and spent her youth bouncing between odd jobs in an attempt to make a living. She worked in Germany as well, if there can be an influence there. She was in constant poverty and was reported to have attempted suicide, but wrote feverishly through it all, and found enough success in it to become one of the most famous female writers of Japan by her death in 1951. She was involved in left-wing movements centered around social injustice, but was noted as an outlier among the proletarian school for her cheerfulness.
Concluding statement
This story asserts that life in the working class (and often life in general) is unpredictable and based completely on external luck, and that the current moment is precious and fragile. No matter what is thrown at us it’s important to have hope and enjoy life. All in all, it also shows its value as an interesting observation of history and a look into a very specific period, but will continue to be relevant for as long as society lasts.
Where to read it
I read it from Modern Japanese Short Stories: Twenty-Five Stories by Japan’s Leading Writers by the Tuttle publishing house, which I got from my local library. It’s also my source for everything I didn’t directly link. I found an English version online from the University of Maryland (quite a few things are different from my copy for some reason, like names, ages, and entire paragraphs). On Tumblr there's a translation in Spanish, if you can read that, and there’s also very cheap kindles of it on Amazon in the original Japanese.
PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU HAVE FEEDBACK OR THOUGHTS!!!!! MY INTERPRETATION IS LIMITED BY MY NATIONALITY AND AGE!!!!!!! LET'S HAVE A DISCUSSION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

❥ cigarettes after sex ˚₊·
✦ ┆ featuring: chuuya nakahara && fumiko hayashi
✦ ┆ content warning: bsd oc, chuuya nakahara x oc, suggestive content (mentions of bite marks / back scratches / finger imprints) && cigarette usage.
✦ ┆ notes from chuuya's angel: gonna be honest, i kind of self projected into this (<//3) but fumichu are very precious to me and this will help me get inspiration to write for my bsd book on wattpad :))
as the moon shone down on the sprawling city of tokyo, chuuya stood on the balcony of his apartment, a cigarette dangling from his lips as he watched the twinkling lights of the cityscape come to life. the faint sounds of traffic and distant chatter filled the evening air as he took slow drags from his cigarette, the calming routine a moment of respite in the midst of the bustling metropolis below.
the sight of the city below, with its towering skyscrapers and neon signs, was a reminder to chuuya of the heartbeat of tokyo, a place where dreams were made and lost amidst the ceaseless motion of the urban landscape. as the smoke from his cigarette curled lazily into the night sky, chuuya felt a sense of peace wash over him.
every time he moved his cigarette holding hand towards his mouth for another inhale of nicotine, the deep claw marks in his back opened up slightly as a reminder of the events that happened before. as much as the tar in his body was giving him some serenity, nothing could compare to his angel that treated him and his marked up body with all the affection she could give. thinking back on it, chuuya hoped that he was able to give fumiko the same thing to.
turning back to look through the glass door that reveals the inside of his bedroom, chuuya puffed out the smoke slowly as he eyed a sleeping fumiko, who had matching bite marks on her neck and finger marks imprinted on her soft arms. he never liked seeing fumiko come back from missions covered in bruises or blood (especially since he knows how much she hates getting dirty), but knowing the marks on her right now came from nothing but his undying love for her made him feel at ease.
just the sight of her was able to put chuuya in a state of euphoria, nevertheless when he has a cigarette in his hand. if fumiko asked him to get rid of every cigarette packet he carried on him, he would do it in a heartbeat. she was his true nicotine, his true reason for making him feel as though he was actually a human. because the feelings she gave him were able to bring anyone back to earth, even if someone like chuuya felt like he was from a different dimension sometimes.
with one last inhale and puff, the grey smoke cleared out in a heartbeat as chuuya shoved the cigarette into the ash tray on the table beside him. '3:43 AM' was what was read on the clock and that was a perfect time for chuuya to lay in bed again with his beloved. truth be told, he regretted leaving to have a smoke break since when he came back to the bed, he could see the goosebumps on fumiko's body that sadly wasn't covered up enough to warm her up.
but that's alright. chuuya was here now, fully able to give fumiko the same kind of warmth she always gave him by resting her head on his chest and gently pecking her forehead a couple of times. regardless if she was asleep or not, chuuya refuses to sleep himself without muttering a small yet adoring "i love you".

Hello there! For the mini event may you please do gintama with the au avatar the last airbender, thank you!
Hello there, my lovely anon! I definitely can do that - I really couldn't come up with solid ideas, so I admit to taking the lazy way out, so have a pretty comprehensive list on what type of Benders everyone would be in this AU! And guys, there are so many characters in Gintama so I swear it wasn't as easy and lazy as it looks! Thanks for sending in a request and I hope you'll enjoy!
Okay, so we're going into this AU with there being the four major bending types - Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Each bending type is as it is portrayed in Avatar: The Last Airbender, with people possessing different degrees of bending and different skills being present within each bending type.
So, when considering which type of Bender each character would be, I kind of broke it down into personality types and traits and qualities to look for, based on what I figure the 'stereotypical' Bender is for each of the four.
Earth Benders are a little rough around the edges, slow to anger, slow to decide on things, but stubborn once their mind is made up. They can be sensitive and they are often very patient.
Air Benders are gentle souls, respectful and adaptable, changeable. They're fast, both in their movements and in their thoughts.
Water Benders are typically calm and easy-going, flexible enough to adapt to their companions or situations. They're often quite easy to talk to and rather content with their lives.
Fire Benders are often prideful and confident individuals who are loyal, determined and ambitious. They can be very playful and fun but they often also have very short fuses on their tempers, which can be very volatile and explosive.
Keeping that in mind, this is what I figure the characters would be for Benders.

The matter I’d been tasked to investigate had to do with Kan’ichi and the nature of his return. Kan’ichi Hiraizumi came home after the bureau sent out a notice, entirely separate from the first and second waves of repatriation. He had been admitted to a military hospital during his duty. After the war, he had also been detained as a prisoner of war in a place that was well-known—even to those with limited knowledge like myself—for having far from humane conditions. Still, he sustained no major injuries or infections, and with his mental and physical health cleared, he returned home on foot, alone. Although it was a miracle worthy of celebration, this kind of story wasn’t particularly rare at the time. The problem was with how Kan’ichi looked since returning. There was little to no resemblance between photos of Kan’ichi from before the war and his current appearance, so much so that it seemed likely that a complete stranger could do a better job at mimicking him. In short, he had returned a completely different person.
