‘It looks much better on Kamitani,’ Ryuuichi thought to himself, after looking down at his own form and then watching his taller friend sit down on one of the pillows beside the low table in the room. Kamitani brought one of his legs up and rested one arm on his knee as he leaned back against his other arm. ‘So, cool…’ Ryuuichi thought, staring at the baseball player a little wistfully.

Kamitani looked up at him then and their eyes met for a moment before Kamitani turned away. “Stop staring at me like that,” Kamitani chastised, closing his eyes. “You look like you want to eat me or something.”

100 Days of Prompts

1. Intro

At first glance, no one would have thought the boy was anything special. He was of average height, scrawny, auburn hair hanging lank over plain brown eyes. He was a good student, near enough to the top of the class to avoid attention from the teachers, with enough mistakes that he didn’t get labelled in the same way of his more studious peers. He had artist’s hands, his mother said, fingers long compared to his palms, suited more to piano keys or the delicate holding of a paintbrush than fighting - though it was plain to anyone who gave him a second glance he did more of the latter, from the scrapes on his knuckles and bruises dotting his pale skin, the frequent cuts that appeared on his cheek or lip marking him the target of someone else’s fists.

When the bruises first started appearing, his teachers thought it was trouble at home - after all, there was no reason a good student like him would get into fights at school - though these beliefs were quickly dispelled in one meeting with his parents - his father, a detective in the city’s police department; his mother, a member of the school board - both parents involved in every high society function and, to all appearances, model citizens.

He was just rebellious, the adults determined, a phase that would pass soon enough - and it might have, had he not already met Hayato.

Because at first glance, Hayato knew everything the adults didn’t, and without even saying anything at all, he drew the boy into his small group of friends and offered him everything he’d been missing.

Because at first glance, he knew they were going to be best friends.
