Hawksbill Sea Turtle: Hawksbill sea turtles inhabit the tropical and sub-tropical waters of all of the world’s major oceans. Hawksbills get their name from their unique beak-like mouth, which resembles that of a hawk and is perfect for finding food sources in hard-to-reach cracks and crevices. They are the only species of sea turtle that can survive on a diet consisting mainly of sponges. Hawksbill turtles play a key role in the function of marine ecosystems.

Thanks to @pileofpawns for the idea and loaning me Tir for this snippet, and to my partner @vigoburrito for letting me use their character Tommy the hawksbill seaturtle! Updates at end of snippet.

Tir made her way to the quiet park where she preferred to have lunch. The staff room was always too busy and talkative, but at least at the park she didn’t need to try and make small talk, or have to hide away in her shell when things got loud. 

At the park she also didn’t get strange looks about the food she brought, or get pushed into conversations and then comments when she’d shut her shell. Especially if one of her co workers were gushing or pissed about something. 

Walking the familiar path down to the treeline by the water she wondered if she might luck into some extra mushrooms to add to her meal. The city had started a huge environmental attempt to reduce pesticide use, and let nature break down fallen tree limbs as long as it was out of the way of foot traffic. There had been a log that looked promising for producing some mushrooms. Especially ones that weren’t normally available. She’d been hankering for a good red cap. 

Of course finding a place to get them was difficult. Most anthros were susceptible to the toxins, which instead gave Tir a delightful tingle when eaten. She stepped under the shade of the trees, making her way down the slightly muddy bank, towards a sheltered log. She set her lunch box down and looked around, poking her head into the darkest most earthy smelling areas. 

While there were no red caps, she did find a few mushrooms she did enjoy, and pulled them off the trees and out of the ground. She made her way back to the log, and opened her lunch box, pulling out a fork-spoon-kinfe utensil. She cut the bottoms off the mushrooms, removing the dirt and bark still connected to it. 

She tossed one of the fresh mushrooms in the air, catching it in her mouth, savoring the earthy, meaty, tinglyness it brought with it. 

A splash pulled her attention from her lunch, as a sea turtle made their way out of the water and up the muddy bank. Tir pulled her head back, not quite closing her shell, wondering how long the interloper to her lunch would be around. 

The interloper was not worried about leaving, in fact they made their way over to another log that was closer to the shore. They pulled their own lunch box out of the water proof bag they carried on their shell, opening a small container and beginning to chow down on their own lunch with happy noises emanating as they ate. 

After a few minutes Tir slowly began to eat her own lunch, a salad of mushrooms, chicken and mixed greens. Slowly, Tir began to relax, the happy noises made by the sea turtle was eating close by actually encouraging her own enjoyment of her lunch. Similar to eating with people at home. But she didn’t have to make small talk, or talk at all!

She alternated her bites of salad with the fresh tingly bites of the mushrooms she’d found earlier that day. The mix of the marinated vegetables and chicken with the fresh earthyness of the vegetables paired well with the freshness of the water, the happy noises from the other turtle, and the sounds of the rushing water and the shh-sh-shh of the leaves above and around them. 

Tir did wait for the other turtle to enter the water before heading back to work, but she found she was more energetic and more perked up from lunch than she normally was. 

Soon it seemed to become a bit of a ritual. Tir would arrive and set herself up on the log, checking around for mushrooms or bringing in fruit to augment her lunch. Then the other turtle would show up, sit on the log by the water, and they would eat lunch together, but apart. Tir enjoyed their lunch friend, though they weren’t sure if their lunch friend even knew that she existed, but that didn’t really bother her. 

She could enjoy a few minutes eating with someone else without having to come out of her shell. 

That was until one day, when Tir was running a little late. She hurried through the park, one of her shoes wet from stepping in a puddle adding yet another bad occurrence on the very bad day she was already having. 

She crashed through the underbrush, determined to sit down on her log and eat her lunch, hoping the quiet of the park might help undo the tension and anxiety she felt buzzing in her mind. She sat down, not noticing the damp decaying bark was slippery. Her seat went out from under her, sending her lunch box, which’s lock had failed, sending her to onto her back, and her lunch flying into the underbrush.

She laid there for a moment, the air knocked out of her, before she rolled onto her side, letting the earthy smells rush into her nose as she took a deep breath. Tears welled as she looked at her lunch on the ground, scattered and dirty.

At the sound of footsteps Tir instinctively withdrew into her shell, closing herself off from the scene. Not only did she not have her lunch, but someone had saw! This day couldn’t get any worse. She just wanted to be home, eating the red cap ravioli her mother had sent her as a care package. 

A rap-tap-rap sounded on her shell, sending tingles down her spine. She tried to ignore it, hoping the person would just go away and leave her alone. A few moments passed before she heard, “Uh-oh. Help?” She knew the voice, though she hadn’t heard it say actual words before. It was the sea turtle. She waited a few more moments before cautiously opening and peeking out of her shell. 

The sea turtle was crouching on the ground, holding her cleaned picnicking utensil, a small bit of clear thin food smelling strongly of sesame and carrots held in front of her mouth. She bit her lip, but it did smell good. She took a bite, finding it crunchy, briny, pungent with sesame and most of all that zinginess associated with her favorite mushrooms! She visibly relaxed as she chewed, enjoying the taste.

The sea turtle nodded, pulling out their own fork, pulling out a bite for themselves as they settled in next to her, “Yummy, jellyfish!” He took his own bite, crunching loudly and holding out the dish with her utensil sitting inside, offering to share. 

And so, despite all the bad things that had happened, Tir found a new friend in the sea turtle, bonding over zingy food, and a promise that she’d bring enough ravioli to share tomorrow.

The hawksbill sea turtle is a magnificent marine creature known for its distinctively shaped beak and stunning patterned shell. Found in tropical and subtropical waters around the world, these endangered turtles play a vital role in maintaining the health of coral reef ecosystems. With their sharp, curved beaks, hawksbill turtles feed primarily on sponges, helping to control their population and promote coral growth. These graceful swimmers undertake long migrations and are known for their nesting behaviour on sandy beaches. The hawksbill sea turtle serves as a symbol of beauty, resilience and the importance of ocean conservation.

Второе название биссы — настоящая каретта — означает, что именно эта черепаха дает самые ценные, "настоящие" роговые пластинки, из которых изготавливают различные сувениры: гребни, шкатулки и прочие мелочи. Очень жаль, что любовь человечества ко всяким безделушкам привела вид к такому плачевному состоянию. Впрочем, мясо биссы тоже ценится в некоторых странах. Разумеется, нелегально, так как настоящая карета уже давно внесена в Международную Красную Книгу и находится под охраной различных организаций. При этом гурманов вовсе не пугает тот факт, что деликатес может оказаться ядовитым из-за пищи, которую сама черепаха ела накануне.

Встретить ее можно в Атлантическом и Тихом океанах: ареал настоящей каретты простирается от умеренных вод северного полушария до умеренных вод южного. Вот только гнездится бисса исключительно в тропических широтах. Населяет преимущественно скалистое мелководье, коралловые рифы, лагуны и заливы с мангровыми берегами. Мелкие прибрежные воды, заливы и устья рек с илистым или песчаным дном — о��ычные места обитания биссы. Она держится чаще в тех местах, где подводной растительности мало. Настоящие каретты всеядны, но отдают предпочтение животной пище- их рацион составляют бентосные беспозвоночные, медузы, анемоны и морские губки, причем только определенных видов, а некоторые из них и вовсе ядовиты для других существ.

Еще один интересный факт этот вид черепах способен светиться в темноте.

The hawksbill turtle (Latin Eretmochelys imbricata) is one of the rare species of sea turtles that is threatened with complete extinction. In appearance, it can be confused with the green turtle, from which the hawksbill differs only in its smaller size and weight: an adult has a body length of 60 to 90 cm with a weight of about 45-55 kg. It is a pity that humanity's love for all sorts of trinkets has led the species to such a deplorable state. However, hawksbill meat is also valued in some countries. Of course, illegally, since the real carriage turtle has long been included in the International Red Book and is protected by various organizations. At the same time, gourmets are not at all afraid of the fact that the delicacy may be poisonous due to the food that the turtle itself ate the day before.

You can meet it in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans: the range of the real carriage turtle extends from the temperate waters of the northern hemisphere to the temperate waters of the southern. But the hawksbill nests exclusively in tropical latitudes. It inhabits mainly rocky shallow waters, coral reefs, lagoons and bays with mangrove shores. Shallow coastal waters, bays and river mouths with a muddy or sandy bottom are the usual habitats of the hawksbill. It is more often found in places where there is little underwater vegetation. True carettas are omnivorous, but prefer animal food - their diet consists of benthic invertebrates, jellyfish, anemones and sea sponges, but only of certain species, and some of them are completely poisonous to other creatures.

Another interesting fact is that this species of turtles can glow in the dark.

The developer of a controversial proposed Ka‘ū residential and commercial community on the Big Island will have to wait to find out if it will be approved for a special management area use permit to move forward with project — or if it will be considered at all — following a special meeting Monday of the Hawai‘i County Windward Planning Commission in Hilo.

Commissioners granted standing for petitions in a contested case hearing filed by the Center for Biological Diversity and ‘Iewe Hanau o Ka ‘Āina. Both organizations object to the special use permit sought by Black Sand Beach LLC to develop Punalu‘u Village on 147 acres around Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach Park, about 6 miles southwest of Pāhala.

The proposed development, which could cost up to $350 million, has run up against a wall of opposition from Ka‘ū community members, residents from elsewhere throughout Hawai‘i and even people from the mainland who say it not only threatens the environment, it would desecrate cultural sites.

There also are concerns about the cost of living increasing because of the development, outside influence in the community, destruction of the pristine Punalu‘u coastline, threat of wildfire because of the state of the former resort buildings, larger numbers of people in the area and loss of a way of life along with historical and generational knowledge, among others.

The Center for Biological Diversity has a legally protected interest in the survival and recovery of endangered and threatened species and their habitats.

Members, some of whom are descendants of Native Hawaiians who inhabited the Hawaiian Islands prior to 1778, have a vested interest in the species, habitat and natural and cultural environment at Punalu‘u, which would be impacted by the proposed development.

The spike in how many people are in Punalu‘u and water quality issues also will impact the animal and plant life there. ‘Iewe Hanau o Ka ‘Āina, which also has members descended from Native Hawaiians who inhabited the islands before 1778, is concerned about the endangered and threatened species of the area.

That includes the threatened nēnē (Hawaiian goose) that hang out on the golf course, endangered green sea turtles and critically endangered hawksbill turtles that nest at Punalu‘u.
