#Repost @oceanramsey ・・・ Join the #SharksToo campaign and win a free pareo or t-shirt (see last photos) For many years I’ve talked about how people love and care about dolphins, whales, turtles, monk seals, etc but when it comes to the health of those populations and marine ecosystems sharks are also a vital component too, they matter too, they need and deserve protection too. They need your help and voice too. Please join in helping sharks to get protection too. Use the hashtag #SharksToo and #SharksMatterToo and #ProtectSharksToo Sea cucumbers and many species of fish even have catch/kill limits, there are currently no limits/bans or protection for sharks in Hawaii aside from taking their fins. How to support and get involved with this campaign: -Please like and share some of these images or create some of your own and keep using the hashtags -Encourage people to support the Hawaii Shark bill HB808 for protection of sharks and rays. Link to more info in the bio of @WaterInspired -Encourage people to sign the petition and stay tuned to http://HelpSaveSharks.Org for the next public meeting -Its not just Hawaii, sharks everywhere need your help, please spread this message and help people to care about #SharksToo Please encourage others around the world to use this perspective to gain protection for sharks in other parts of the world. #SharksTOO #SharksMatterToo #ProtectSharksToo #Sharks #dolphins #coexist #sharksinhawaii #sharkresearchhawaii #sharkconservationhawaii #sharkshawaii #hawaiisharks #helpsavesharks #greatwhitedolphins PHOTO ©️ @juansharks ❤️🦈 @oneoceandiving logo ®️™️©️ #Oceanramsey Repost or just make your own and use the # a bunch to win t-shirt or water pareo from @oneoceandesigns (at North Shore, Haleiwa, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwS6c7jhTGn/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wleamgci3im4

Stunning photo of two Galapagos sharks and important caption by @hannah_gabrielson. Please #SpeakUpForSharks, as they are not the enemy; we need them for a healthy planet. ・・・ “Sharks are often misunderstood; they're not maniacal eating machines, eager to devour anything or everything in their path. Only about 30 of the approximately 501 species of sharks are dangerous, and even these rarely attack humans. People, however, are responsible for the death of 11,400 sharks every hour, every day. Since sharks grow slowly, breed late in life and generally bear few young, the populations of many species of sharks are declining dramatically. Without more regulations, many species will become extinct.” @montereybayaquarium #sharks #galapgosshark #stopkillingsharks #saynotosharkfinsoup #stopfinning #stopculling #savesharks #sharks #itstheirocean #hawaii #hawaiisharks #simplysharks #discoversharks #sharkconcervation #oceanconcervation #ikelite #nikon #discoverocean #madeofocean (at Haleiwa, Hawaii) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvdBuQPDh4v/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ll1nfbl4uyyc

Great photo and information  from @hannah_gabrielson on one of our more commonly-sighted shark species, sandbar sharks 😍🦈💙 ・・・ Found in all oceans of the world, sandbar sharks are most common in deep coastal waters. This species has been documented in intertidal areas down to about 900 feet in depth. The sandbar shark is light gray or tan in coloration with white on its ventral side. Lacking distinct markings, its tall dorsal fin is a distinguishing characteristic. The maximum length recorded for a sandbar in Hawai‘i is 6.4 feet; while the average length is 5 feet. With a varying diet, sandbar sharks are opportunistic bottom-feeders, eating bony fish, cephalopods, crustaceans, other sharks, and rays. Pupping season is July to September with a litter size ranging from one to eight pups. Gestation period lasts 11-12 months and birth size averages 25 inches for sandbar sharks. #sharks #sandbarshark #switchtocheddarbroccoli #stopkillingsharks #saynotosharkfinsoup #stopfinning #stopculling #savesharks #sharks #sharklivesmatter #itstheirocean #hawaii #hawaiisharks #simplysharks #discoversharks #sharkconcervation #oceanconcervation #ikelite #nikon #discoverocean #madeofocean (at Oneoceandiving.com) https://www.instagram.com/p/BsZN6zLhGj-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=tneft1ghbkoy

#Repost @himb_soest check out this extremely rare footage of a tiger shark giving birth! ・・・ Tiger shark birthing. While tagging adult tiger sharks with the @himb_soest Shark Lab offshore out of the north end of Kāne’ohe Bay, this female tiger shark on the line gave birth to 10 full term pups, and probably had at least 20 more to go after release. Each pup is in an individual embryonic sac while gestating inside the mother. During birth, each pup breaks out of the sac while leaving the mother (the golden colored cellophane-looking material you see). As soon as the pups leave the mother, they are immediately on their own. Tiger shark pups do not have a placenta, instead the mother provides nutrients to their young via energy-rich fluid provided within each egg case. Fall is the time of year when pregnant tiger sharks give birth around Hawaii, followed soon by mating in the winter months. This is a screenshot of me on a surfboard pushing a tiger shark away for a show I did on shark week 2014 showing how tiger sharks could possibly mistake surfers and swimmers for prey items like sea turtles. The Tiger sharks wouldn't even approach me so they had to put fish guts and blood in the water. I know sounds like a bad place to go for a paddle but I wanted to show they would go for the turtle and they did and I also got to show its possible to easily deter/push them off if you see them coming. Being aware even when you are surfing is a good idea anytime we visit their home, the ocean. I have been surfing north shore since 1986 I have had my share of shark sightings even being chased a few times, I also dive with sharks almost everyday and I can tell you seeing the day to day natural behavior of sharks is comforting to me when I go surfing. Seeing how cautious they generally are and swimming with them more times than I could count I know they don't look at us as a natural prey item. I have a deep respect for their capabilities and role as an apex predator and even more so for their extremely important role keeping the marine ecosystem healthy. A surfer Colin Cook was bit yesterday on the north shore and I am so glad to hear he is in stable condition and alert. @keoniashley a friend who has also been out shark diving a lot went to rescue him. I am so grateful Keoni was there and had the experience and bravery to go help save his life as he probably would have bled to death without assistance. Shark accidents do happen but they are so rare, when they do happen from time to time I hope there are more people like #Keonikabowthorpe around to help be the difference. My best wishes to Colin Cook on a speedy recovery and I hope to share more information on shark behavior and ways to avoid and respond to adverse interactions along with @oceanicramsey @oneoceandiving behavioral research #sharkresearch #sharkconservation #sharkdiving #sharksighted #helpsavesharks #hawaiisharkcount #hawaiisharks #internationalsharkproject (at Tiger Beach)
