Little Said But Much Spoken

CW very minor injury, little bit of blood An experiment in writing a fic with nearly no dialogue. Concrit welcome - did the silent communications make sense, is the pacing fast enough, is it still interesting without dialogue?

Aderyn slinks into the Septim-Broussard residence like a cat, trailing in dried mud and the syrupy dawn sunlight. Stationed at the base of the stairs, Alexine – a new Blade Sister – raises an eyebrow. Aderyn gives a sheepish smile and a little wave. With an uptick of her chin, Alexine indicates the shedding boots and mucky coat should be abandoned on the coat rack. Aderyn accepts this with a tired grimace and does as bid. Alexine nods her approval, but stops with a frown as Aderyn starts to pass her on the stairs. Aderyn pauses, looking back. Alexine taps her own cheek, causing Aderyn to mimic the move. Her fingers come away with dried brown flecks. Aderyn gives the older Blade a laconic shrug, waving away the concern on Alexine's brow with a laissez-faire flick and continues her ascent before anything can be said.

Aderyn's room, a tiny little nook of a space, is at the very top of the old townhouse so it takes two flights to get there. At the landing on the first, Buck – another of the new Blades cadre – is currently guarding the master bedroom. Aderyn starts to ascend the second flight, when Buck softly clears his throat. Aderyn glances back to see him beckoning her with perplexed wrinkles in his forehead. With a curious head tilt she does so. Buck starts to say something but Aderyn quickly shakes her head, pressing a finger to her lips and looking pointedly at the bedroom door. He gives an understanding nod. Telegraphing his movements with enquiring raised eyebrows, Buck reaches for her hair. Aderyn might be unsure what he wants, but she helped train him, and so trusts him with a quick nod. From the skeins of hair escaping her slowly disintegrating bun, he plucks several leaves. For lack of anything else to do with them, Buck scrunches them into a pocket. His brow still wrinkles with confusion and concern, so Aderyn gives a half-shrug, head twisting in askance. Like Alexine, he touches his own cheek to indicate the rusty marks; again, Aderyn dismisses the worry with a quick grin and an airy hand-flick. Patting a hand over an affected yawn, she swiftly turns away – bam! – into Roliand, coming from the bathroom.

The older Blade's assessment is swift, and he makes a sweeping gesture towards the still open bathroom door. Aderyn draws a breath, bringing a hand up to make a point. Roliand's face settles, hard as rock, his gesture towards the bathroom sharper; she's not going to skate past him like she did the others. Resigned, Aderyn goes into the bathroom. Roland's gentle with the swab and sterile water. More gentle than Dr Ivers might have been, and he certainly doesn't bluster and huff and demand answers as Dr Ivers would.

It's only once all Aderyn's cuts have been cleaned and covered; once he has delivered her safely to her room, that Roliand takes her hand, radiating a fierce protectiveness she can only think of as brotherly love, and asks, "Who did this to you?" Aderyn's laugh is an embarrassed hush of breath between wide, smiling lips. "A tree." Aderyn watches with puckish, pursed lips as Roliand's zest softens into confusion. "God's honest," she continues, hand over heart, as his brows steepen. "A job went Pete Tong and I fell out of a tree."

Author’s Note

The chapters that are titled are still subject to change, depending on how the book goes and if I want to split a certain chapter into 2 because it’s too long. There are I believe a minimum of 3k words per chapter and depending on how far I want this book to go it could end up being more than 50 chapters.

I do have a small child, as well as dealing with the death of an immediate family member, so currently writing is paused until at least the day after thanksgiving.

This book will hopefully be fully published by March 15th 2025, I will be updating this post with new chapter titles as I go so the progress can be shown, I do edit and proof read as I go but I will be doing a final edit and proof read the day or two before publication.

I started this book a few months after I finished bleeding heart and I’m trying to make this an all in one book rather than two or more. As there are 2 more books in the Fallen Forged Forever series bleeding heart is just book one.

I think I've just written one of my most favorite metaphors to date 😄️

"My most pressing concern currently," the Fox said, drawing the words out like marmite from a jar

The Fox's voice is rich, cultured, with a little bit of an unusual accent. Marmite is rich, umami, with a little bit of an unusual aftertaste

Marmite is a viscous fluid, trying to get it out of the jar is the same as with honey - you get a lot at once and then it trails off, echoing how the Fox is measuring his words with care.

Marmite (like vegemite and other types of 'yeast extract') is very divisive; Aderyn is either going to love or loathe whatever he's about to say next.

Aderyn starts off as a happy-go-lucky character. She knows the world can be a dark place, but is the sort of person who combats that by dragging the light in with her. She's also fiercely independent, oftentimes to her detriment. As her story goes on, her personality shifts, becoming darker and more jaded by the intense situation she's found herself in. Conversely, she begins to learn that taking a helping hand from the right people won't impact her freedom as much as she fears. With the ending of the intense situation and away from the cause of it, she turns back into the person she was; and is perhaps the stronger for it.

So The Legend of Spyro Trilogy has been on my mind a lot lately and it also just so happened to have been the 25th Anniversary of the Spyro Series. I don't plan on making a fanfic but I had ideas for a story that takes place after Dawn of the Dragon.

Basic premise of the story: The War with Malefor and his Dark army is finally over and Dragons who have been surviving in hidden Haven cities all around the world are starting to return to Warfang the Dragon Capital. Spyro and Cynder are finally free to be young dragons for the first time in their lives, but they are not entirely sure how to be normal young dragons, they are both basically child soldiers, Spyro has the instant notoriety of being the legendary chosen one Purple Dragon, and while Cynder helped defeat Malefor not every dragon is going to forgive her from her time being The Dark Master's Monster. These kids need a break. I am tired of seeing people making Ember and Cynder fight over Spyro, it's stupid. So here Ember is baby. She's like 5-6 years old and loves both Spyro and Cynder, and also ships them kinda like Pearl from Ace Attorney Flame is also a child, probably 7-8 years old and wants to be Spyro's sidekick. The Guardians are too old for their jobs now so they need to train up a new generation. I came up with 6 characters of my own Viridian the Earth Dragon (Smart Nature boy) Aestella "Star" the Electric Dragoness (Positive and Social performer) Aeoryn the Wind Dragoness (Stoic and Serious Warrior) Borealis the Ice Dragon (Roguish Outlaw Vigilante) Phoenix the Fire Dragoness (Adorkable artist and craftsperson) and Maelstrom the Water Dragon (Himbo Surfer bro who is good vibes)

Current WIP is Self-Indulgent AU (which may or may not get a real title*). Rubbish elevator pitch (because I'm sleepy ^.^'):

Girl has no dad. Girl joins bodyguard agency. Girl gains found-family dad (CEO). Girl discovers found-family dad (CEO) is real dad! ~Shenanigins~ occur. Bad guys kidnap girl. *Whump* occurrs. It's a tragedy, everyone is cursed by the narrative, there is no happy ending.

Since this was supposed to be a short work (currently still under 20k), there is no WIP intro for it, but I suppose its genres are Action/ Espionage.

Dying Embers AU

Firefighters have a series of responsibilities; among those are having long hours, answering distress calls, putting out fires (as they should be), etc. However, one of these responsibilities can slip their minds on occasion.

Because of their long hours and paramedic training, firefighters are one of the first lines of defense in multiple ways. Some fire stations house what's called a Safe Haven Baby Box, an anonymous drop off crate in which parents can surrender their babies if they don't have the means to care for them.

One morning, however, Firefighter Characters A, B, C, D, & E wake up to the sound of rustling from the direction of the baby box. Upon further investigation they find four infants in the safe haven -- in retrospect, they totally understand that the parents who surrendered them likely did so because of the raging blizzard outside, but the firefighters themselves can't leave for the same reason, nor can they transfer the babies to the proper channels until the snow lets up.

Without any other option, Characters A-E must find a way to care for the four infants for the next week while attending to their regular duties. That and, of course, attempting to keep the babies warm while not resorting to the obvious wrong choice (lighting a fire).

1) Describe one creative WIP project you’re planning to work on over the summer

I'm planning on continuing to split up a lot of my original drafts of Fangthane's Folly, The Trouble with Meredith and The Wizard's Tale into multiple stories so they can be added to the relevant series. I also want to create a proper playlist for both Fangthane's Folly and The Trouble with Meredith at some point (The Wizard's Tale already has one, but more can and will be added to it).

2) Recommend a book

I've started re-reading Sabriel by Garth Nix recently. Ok, so it's a ya novel, but it still hold a special place in my heart and I love the whole series. It's one I will continuously recommend to people because the worldbuilding and magic system in it is top notch.

3) Recommend a fic

From my own writing I'll be more than happy to recommend the 'The Trouble with Meredith' series. It's made up of short stories so it's the easiest one to get into.

For other's writing: I'll go ahead and recommend @druidx's Haven's Ember series because the character writing in it is absolutely wonderful. Really, you should just check out all her stuff, but I maaaay be slightly biased.

4) Recommend music!

I absolutely must recommend Find Me by the Aviators. It's my go to piece of music for when I need something low key inspirational to listen to while mulling over plot threads and playing solitaire.

5) Share one piece of advice!

Get ye outside and into nature at some point over the summer. The best time to go, in my opinion, is around dusk if possible because that's when any wildlife that's around tends to come out. Just seeing some trees and/or grass will help immensely, I promise.
