SONG OF THE WEEK: “That Lucky Old Sun” https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/that-lucky-old-sun
The lyrics of "Lucky Old Sun" contrast the toil and hardship of the singer's life with the obliviousness of the natural world. Yet he sees a silver lining and God's deliverance behind it all. This song was written in 1949 by big band musician Beasley Smith and prolific Tin Pan Alley lyricist Haven Gillespie—who also wrote "You Go To My Head" (another favorite of mine). They said “Ol’ Man River” inspired this song, which gained more presence with me after hearing Brian Wilson's 2007 concept album based on this song. In 2020 I added it to my set list for when I perform in assisted living homes. My arrangement blends the definitive Frankie Laine recording with the soul of Louis Armstrong's (in 1949 both artists released "competing” versions). I've grown fond of singing it and I added a gospel flair to it. Please listen (feedback welcome), and don’t work too hard out there.

You go to my head
Lyrics by Haven Gillespie, Music by J. Fred Coots (1938)
You go to my head And you linger like a haunting refrain And I find you spinning round in my brain Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew And I find the very mention of you Like the kicker in a julep or two
The thrill of the thought That you might give a thought to my plea, cast a spell over me Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself Can't you see that it never can be?
You go to my head With a smile that makes my temperature rise Like a summer with a thousand Julys You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance You go to my head You go to my head

You're a sweet little headache If you keep on that way But a sweet little heartache You'll turn out to be some day (1938, listen)

Music History Today: January 31, 2023
January 31, 1892: Singer and entertainer Eddie Cantor was born in New York City. He began singing and juggling in the streets for money and soon moved to talent contests early in his teens. Cantor's appearance on Rudy Vallee's 'The Fleischmann's Yeast Hour' on February 5, 1931, led to a four-week tryout with The Chase and Sanborn Hour. He joined Chase and Sanborn on September 13, 1931.
He agreed in November 1934 to introduce a new song by the songwriters J. Fred Coots and Haven Gillespie that other well-known artists had rejected as being "silly" and "childish." The song "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" immediately had orders for 100,000 copies of sheet music the next day. It sold 400,000 copies by Christmas of that year.

Chris Thomas worked with Roxy Music among other musicians, so no surprise he also helmed Let's Stick Together, one of the band frontman's solo albums after the 70's breakup of his group. We already talked about the record, which remains a curious disc in his opus, i.e. the LP manages to be both an exception and a sign of things to come for him. He covers standards and his old tunes, but you can also notice the gradual development of his persona that would ferment into the version of Jay Gatsby, which survived. Of course, he was still in the centre of everything during the 70's, yet he observed these foolish things were not for him. Nonetheless, he kept hoping for happiness, the latter didn't seem that elusive back then for Mr. Ferry.

Heinrich Maria Davringhausen Un anno fa mi innamorai del reparto Di un ospedale: stanzette quadrate e allineate, Semplice calcestruzzo, lavelli – un obbrobrio per un esteta, Senza considerare il russare del vicino di letto.
