i love being married to a straight guy. this morning we were parallel chilling and i glance at his computer and he's watching a drill fight tournament. as in, guys attaching drills to the same rod and turning them on until one breaks. to find the strongest drill. jose noticed me staring and rolled out of the way so i could see the screen. he knew every drill brand and told me their quality and price. i watched the whole thing without comment. the violence was enchanting. i never would have found this. he's a vector to an entirely alien, often beautiful, world.

Destroyer Album Review: Dan's Boogie

Dan Bejar, lead singer and songwriter of Destroyer, is always winking at his audience. Sometimes, though, he’s not just winking at them: He’s strapping his listener in a wingback chair, pouring them a glass of brandy, bringing it up to their lip for a small sip, placing it down on a mahogany desk, and looking at them dead on as he begins to wink. Yet, right before his one eye closes, an idea creeps into his head, and he blinks with both of his eyes in complete sincerity. Destroyer’s latest album, Dan’s Boogie, has been blinking at me these past few weeks. Bejar’s music is in on a joke that doesn’t make me laugh so much as it makes me think, “Oh, I get it!” and then later on the drive home, realize, “I don’t actually get it, but I really like it.”

Bejar has steadily toured for three years since the release of his 2022 record LABRYNTHITIS, during which he didn’t focus on songwriting. Instead, he allowed his creative impulses to grow without the pressure of producing new music. What started as a brief break after finishing LABRYNTHITIS turned into nearly two years of refraining from writing at all. The result? Dan’s Boogie—and it boogies. “Hydroplaning Off the Edge of the World” was written to mimic a pop artist’s song of the summer that's played by every teeny bopper for months out of the year prior to being cast off and forgotten when the next hit comes. Appropriately, the second half of the song is improvised spoken word, another wink.

Best, groove bursts at the seams of Dan’s Boogie. The title track is a powerful song that encourages you to bop along and boogie with Bejar, even if he boogies a little differently than you do, something you might not see in his performance on stage. Each track showcases instrumentation and variety that hasn’t been as present on Destroyer’s more subtle recent releases. 2020’s Have We Met was slow and contemplative. LABRYNTHITIS jumped from topic to topic and refused to stick to one thorough sound. Dan’s Boogie, among its numerous styles, commits itself to its name.

Destroyer Live Show Review: 3/3, Old Town School of Folk Music, Chicago

Co-presented with Chicago Humanities Festival, the Old Town School of Folk Music welcomed Destroyer's Dan Bejar for a brief show on Monday night. On stage with just an acoustic guitar, performing songs from his dense discography, Bejar gave an intimate and endearing set. Later this month, Destroyer will be releasing their 15th studio record, Dan’s Boogie, via Merge Records, an album I couldn't be more excited for. Unfortunately, he didn't reveal anything off of his upcoming record--not even “Cataract Time", the eight-minute groovy tune with a saxophone lifting the listener up as it comes to a close, that he would drop at midnight later that night. He did, however, play quite a few of my favorites: “English Music", “Your Blood", “Chinatown", and “Trembling Peacock".

Live, Bejar has been known to get down to business, rarely chatting between songs or interacting with his audience, though on Monday, he did sparsely mention a few words of wisdom throughout the show. When introducing “English Music", a Streethawk: A Seduction cut written towards the end of the 90's and wrapped around discourse hyper-fixated on Y2K, Bejar noted that it focuses on, “the end times.�� A crowd member suggested that it still has relevancy today. After Bejar finished taking a sip of water, he mumbled into the microphone, “It’s a song of hope.” The moment reminded me of Destroyer's 2020 record Have We Met, originally concocted as a Y2K album before Bejar scrapped the idea. Ironically, a few months after its release, our world faced an actual global crisis.

Bejar’s solo act is quiet. I love how his songs take on new life in the middle of their runtime. Seeing him with no backing band removes that dynamic element from his records, but it heightens his songwriting skills and his craftsmanship. He's a stellar musician who makes performing look easy. I’ve always found his lyrics to be obtuse, difficult to parse together, but simple to process. I don’t know exactly what he’s talking about, but I understand the emotion and energy that he puts on display, which was present on Monday night.

the most difficult thing about growing as a person socially, as in getting out of your shell and noticing that you are, is that there will still be times when it doesn’t feel like you’ve grown at all! times when you can’t really connect with anyone around you, times when you fail to enter into an existing conversation, times when you say the wrong thing (or nothing at all when in hindsight you probably should’ve). but that’s also kind of the best thing, because that’s the thing that helps you realize that sometimes, it’s not you or your lack of skills or any shortcoming. sometimes certain environments just aren’t for you and certain people aren’t your people, and that’s okay. that’s human. it’s okay to not feel the progress you have made all the time.
