“lucky ending” extra notes i & iii
Hi, I said I would do it but then I released ver i so long ago that I felt I shouldn't do this unless I had another version out at least so yay! finally! ... I'll add ver ii here when I get around to writing it... *shifty eyes* So as usual, this is just my thought process and ideas while writing lol.
*please do not read if you haven’t read “lucky ending” ver i (dorm leaders) & ver iii (rook & lilia).
It was inspired by an anon ask and the button tradition from Japanese schools.
The anon ask went like this: First at all, I like do much your writing and I hope you are doing well. Second, I was wondering what would happen if the MC (Fem!s/o I guess) decided to not go back to her world, like she decide stay with her villain? Can you do make headcanons of this for the dorm leaders? Thank you very much. – from Anonymous
The button tradition, as narrated by the first years, is done when one person confesses and the other responds by giving them the button closest to their heart. In most Japanese uniforms it’s the second uniform, but in Twisted Wonderland--I looked at the ceremonial robes and the closest button should be the fifth. Maybe. I could be wrong.
The songs I listened to while writing this!
The original dorm leaders (and Rook) was written while listening to “Lucky Ending”, the ending theme of Fruits Basket. The English lyrics (translated by otenkiame!) are:
“Change is important. I want to do it well,/ but I wanna cry. It's still bad. I wanna cry”
“The word "goodbye" has disappeared completely from this world/ All that remains is me fooling around next to you/A day you don't laugh won't come anymore”
“I've understood it since being here/ These feelings of wanting to protect you aren't a misunderstanding/ If we can call what connects us bonds,/ everything changes/ everybody changes/ Even if in a different world, it'll never be different/ everything changes/ everybody changes/ Don't change, ever/ Stay here, stay here”
I think it’s obvious why I chose to use this as the title of the series. It’s a story about change but it’s also a story about the things you don’t want to change... And I think it’s not wrong to want to hold onto things.
I also listened to the same playlist that I listened to while writing “wendy?” “hello peter pan”:
“Can’t help falling in love” cover by Annapantsu, “If you’re not the one” by David Beddingfield, “Who Knew” by P!nk and “All Too Well” by Taylor Swift.
For Lilia in particular, I was listening to three Beauty and the Beast songs on loop. “Evermore” by Josh Groban, “Days in the Sun” by the live action cast and, of course--”How does a moment last forever” by Celine Dion.
“How does a moment last forever?/ How can a story never die?/ It is love we must hold onto/ Never easy, but we try/ Sometimes our happiness is captured/ Somehow, our time and place stand still/ Love lives on inside our hearts and always will”
Also for Lilia, Tolerate It by Taylor Swift.
“You're so much older and wiser and I/ I wait by the door like I'm just a kid”
“I made you my temple, my mural, my sky/Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life”
Malleus was definitely the first piece finished. Closely followed by Vil’s. I believe there was a gap inbetween them before I did the others? I wrote bits and pieces of Leona, Idia, Kalim and Azul’s. I think I finished Leona, Idia, Kalim then Riddle because I distinctly remember saving Azul for last.
One of the most important things for me, is that each story stands distinct of each other. So I gave myself a really hard time trying to figure out how each one uniquely belonged to each of the characters.
For the Prologue... I think because it’s set at the graduation of certain characters, I used that to my advantage and implied the stronger bonds between the Yuu!Reader and the entirety of the cast. Because a lot of time has passed and I feel like--regardless of what other people believe, bonds will be made and relationships will have strengthened enough for it to happen.
Riddle is honestly another really difficult character for me to write. I generally do love him and I enjoy his story, but something about him is difficult and I’m not sure why.
I think a part of me is also really miffed because from Heartslabyul-Savanaclaw, you could feel that Riddle really cared for Yuu on some level but then he just straight up disappears come Octavinelle chapter. I feel like there was potential to develop their relationship even more.
He WENT UP AND TIED YOUR RIBBON I REMEMBER I WENT DOKI DOKI OVER THAT.
I feel like because I’ve established that it’s a Yuu!Reader, it’s impossible for this story to not include both Ace and Deuce. So of course they featured in really big roles for this one, being responsible for telling Riddle the story.
I have to thank my friend, Mes, for bouncing ideas with me. They were the one who suggested what I could do with Riddle’s story by having ADeuce play such a big part!
I also tried my hardest to include Trey and Cater, and I’m pretty happy with their cameo. In a way, they definitely helped Riddle figure out his own feelings for you.
My favourite lines are: “I think you earned that much. I don’t believe anyone’s ever been in your situation before so—there’s no right or wrong about what you’re doing. It’s all about what you want to do.”
I wish someone would tell this to Yuu in general though. They’re the only one who has ever been in their situation (to our knowledge at least) and like... they’re definitely allowed to be even more selfish.
Leona is someone who I used to dislike a lot. I never hid that. It’s primarily because of how disappointed I am in the story of Savanaclaw probably. But like, I was always concerned about writing him properly because I thought that it was only right that I did right by him, because there would be people reading these stories who loved him. And I felt like I had to do right by that love.
I think... it’s wrong to believe that characters... villains... cannot fall in love or “won’t fall in love.” I think it’s wrong also to think that “people don’t change for love.”
In fact, people do change. You definitely shouldn’t change yourself to be loved, but... people change all the time to be their “better” selves. So whose to say that a good person, who you love, will not make you want to improve yourself? Isn’t that what we want when we meet people? To fall in love with someone who will ultimately make you better and never worse.
Or so that’s how I try to write the Twisted characters when they fall in love... With an understanding that “morally” the person they are falling for is “kind” and “good” and how a part of them might just want to be better just for that person. (Especially Leona and Azul). They don’t necessarily have to be nice to everyone, but if they can be better for one person... We stan healthy character growth.
But yeah, Leona is driven by understanding that he’s a very selfish person. But that he’s also very unfortunate and he doesn’t want tie you with someone who, he thinks, is actually worthless. He probably, deeply, thinks you deserve more.
Though his selfishness eventually wins out and well... Won’t you forgive him for it? :) For tying you down to this worthless second prince?
I think his own self-awareness does make him try harder. Not for everyone or everything... but for you. Just for you. I think that would be Leona’s love language--spending time with you, trying for you.
He’d appreciate if you didn’t call him out on it though, that would be very embarrassing.
Looking back, I’m surprised that it was the only version where none of the other boys from his dorm showed up lol. Which means Ruggie is the sole character who has yet to appear in the “lucky ending” series, huh.
My favourite lines from his story that still leaves me breathless and patting my past self in the back: ““I’m home—” you said—even if a part of you felt that home should have been two green eyes, a cocky smirk, and a warm patch of sunlight on the grassy ground.”
Like honestly, what was I on? Who was she?
Azul is, like Leona, someone who is so keenly aware of the things he’s lacking. In fact, he’s someone who thinks he’s lacking when he’s probably perfect in some aspects. He might act proud but a part of him--I think--thinks its not enough. It’s never enough. He can certainly do better still.
In that light, it’s why he thinks he’s undeserving of a partner. Especially one who is “kind” and “understanding.” While ultimately, Azul deserves people in his life who are that and “accepting” of him--I think he still thinks he doesn’t.
And thats why he lets go of the Yuu!Reader. It’s why he doesn’t “chase” after her like Leona did.
It’s because he’s selfish, because he wants her--that he forces himself to let go.
Azul needs someone who’ll tell him that he is worth something and that he’s definitely worth the effort. So please praise him a lot until he’s crying in happiness. I’m sure it’s the one thing he’s always wanted to hear from people around him.
Also my Poly!Octavinelle Agenda has never died and I am pleased Past!Ai got away with so much Poly!Octa hints in this story lol. But honestly, regardless of wht Octavinelle says... god, you can tell they genuinely care about each other.
I recently rewatched Octavinelle’s chapter and... by god, the amount of things I missed out on first watch. Jade’s concern when he realized Azul wanted to get rid of that photo... The fact Floyd was so willing to drop the fight to return to Azul too... Anyways, Poly!Octa Agenda for life.
Favourite lines: “Azul’s pathetic whimpers turned into guttural sobs. His fingers spread to cover his eyes—and his glasses slid off his face, down to his lap and then to the ground—at his actions. His whole body shook as he cried his heart out.”
It’s not as poetic as a lot of my other favourites, but for some reason these lines always get me when I reread them. There’s something so visceral about it.
Azul’s piece is probably the least visually stimulating out of all these stories? His was so emotionally driven compared to the others and I worried a lot about that.
I think I remember I was crying so badly as I was writing this.
Kalim is really hard for me because I feel like I struggle a lot with finding conflict in his character? He’s such a genuinely nice person, I find it hard to believe that the Yuu!Reader would feel alienated from him or something. So I brought in “environment” to get in the way.
My use of celestial imagery for Kalim is because of the Scarabia trailer! I really loved how it put Kalim as the sun and Jamil as the moon. I definitely will take advantage of that when I get around to writing for Jamil.
So because I wanted to use the sun, I chose to use the idea of comets for Kalim? I think I remember something about how meteors are drawn to the gravitation pull of the sun and can “escape” it or “be destroyed” by it. Haha, hot.
Jamil is someone who ultimately cares about Kalim too and I had fun writing his banter with the Yuu!Reader. I think I wanted to decribe the shadows licking his face reminscent to the marks from his Overblot but... I felt like doing that would give Jamil too much focus so I ultimately decided against it.
It would’ve been hot though.
Oh yes, one thing I wanted to talk about is Kalim’s rushed proposal. I remember people talking about it in the tags, comments... even in asks at that time. The reason he does it is because he’s someone who didn’t realize his feelings until you spelled out your own. It was a sort of: “Oh. Right. That is the word I’d use to describe my feelings.”
My favourite lines from his story is: “How does one bid goodbye to the sun?” and “No one ever willingly bids goodbye to the sun.They spend the rest of their lives trying to find the right way back to it.”
My god, who was this genius.
Vil is probably the most visually stunning out of all these stories. I feel like my stories go from super vivid imagery and setting to just complete emotional disasters lol. (Vil being the former and Azul’s being the latter... not that it’s bad, it actually suits the characters).
Oh man, I remember thinking that Vil is such a hard character to write because we don’t know what his motivation for perfection is. All we knows is that he wants to be the best but, why?
It’s like, for example, Idia. His motivations could be otaku-related. He doesn’t want to go to class because he’d rather go play or something. That sounds in character--but Vil was so hard because he wanted perfection.
But we already see him as such a perfect character, so what else did he need to be even more perfect? In that light, Chapter 5 did a really good job on presenting Vil’s motivations.
But honestly, I think I can comfortably say that the Vil I’ve written so far is pretty accurate? To his character. I’m really grateful I read his chat lines because his comment about intelligence really got me thinking about his possible motivations. It made it really easy to understand that Vil wasn’t like majority of the real world’s influencers.
One other thing that I was really happy about with his story is the use of the flower language. It’s something I hope I can use more because it’s so beautiful.
Oh! And the roses the Yuu!Reader talks about are double delight roses. They are specifically bred to have two colors--yellow in the center and pink on the outside. I thought it fitting that the Yuu!Reader breed special roses for Vil.
They can be called... err... Vil Roses?
My favourite lines from his story is: ““My happiness will not be dictated by others—no, Vil Schoenheit is a person who will grasp happiness with his own hands.” [...] “I’m giving you this button because I’ve already found happiness by your side.””
This line was actually inspired by Zelda C.W.’s MYth series. Specifically Hera’s story, Will.
Idia ...for him, I somehow had a very hard time imagining him trying to tell the reader to stay. Like that didn’t compute for me? I felt like his version was better approached in a more comedic light somehow.
I also felt that it would be cuter if the Yuu!Reader had already chosen to stay and Idia would need to hastily retrack his confession... Unfortunately, Yuu!Reader won’t let him.
Honestly looking back on it, I wonder how much of Chapter 6 is going to make me scream and want to rewrite Idia’s part?
My favourite lines from his story is: “He was never particularly good at lying—nor was he good at keeping secrets from you. You were a person he considered a dear friend—and he was always the type of person who ended up spilling everything to you. He liked being able to talk about the things he enjoyed—he liked that he had found someone who wanted to hear him out.”
A lot of my interpretation for Idia is closely linked to personal experience as an anime, manga and gaming fan. It was just a couple of years ago where people would actually be bullied for liking these things--but nowadays its become a norm. It’s... stunning actually but it makes me happy to know that maybe nobody will be judged for loving anime.
That being said, Idia’s longing to find someone he can talk to is something I really relate too--back then, it was so difficult to find someone to talk to about my interests... So I interpreted Idia as much the same. That what he enjoys about the Yuu!Reader is their ability to simply sit and listen to him talk.
Malleus... man, recently I’ve been starting to fall in love with him all over again. He was my first oshi ever... Anyways, moving on. You think I’ve talked enough about immortal x mortal but nope, we are not done. I love this theme in general, romantic or platonic.
I will never shut up about it you can’t make me.
Sebek having a good enough friendship with Yuu!Reader is such a delicious concept. Like mutual respect and Sebek understanding that Yuu!Reader gives Malleus a different type of companionship that Sebek, Silver or Lilia couldn’t...
And also, ultimately, Sebek and Yuu!Reader do love Malleus. In different ways, but I like the thought of Sebek respecting that and respecting the Yuu!Reader.
Me realizing just now that Silver joins Ruggie in the: “has never appeared in a lucky ending fic club.”... Sorry Silver, I swear soon. Once we get more content on you.
Celestial themes for Malleus are primarily, again, because he only ever seemed to meet you at night. And I thought it would be wonderful, if you were a bright spark to him.
Favourite lines are definitely: “Oh, bright light… I would prefer to live the rest of your life by your side… rather than spend centuries contemplating what it could have felt… to hold you in my arms.”
I am, always, going to be such a big sucker for the idea of immortals constantly remembering and loving mortals. Always holding them close in their memories, because in that way--their lovers have become immortal with them.
I also like to imagine that he eventually figures out a way to connect your worlds together so you can still talk to your friends and family from that world. He is one of the most powerful magicians around, I’m sure its possible.
Rook was honestly the most difficult piece for me to write because he’s so hard(?) for me to understand. He’s a mess of contradictions honestly and I... guess I’m excited to see what he’ll do come Chapter 6.
I actually rewrote his story so much. I got about 500 words with a different idea/plot in mind before deleting that completely and restarting from scratch.
I feel like Rook is someone who talks big and talks about love without actually knowing what it truly might feel like. He’s someone who doesn’t understand it and ends up mistaking it for his fascination.
Aside from me enjoying inserting other characters from the same dorm as much as possible, I felt that Vil was the perfect person to snap some sense into Rook.
Epel’s appearance there is basically to reflect how much I really hope the first year kids get really close to one another.
Rook is also someone who I think, doesn’t try to explain himself too much. He’s someone who I think talks a lot, but if people don’t understand him then he doesn’t need to be understood? That’s my impression. Lol, when “lucky ending” became a character study.
I also really loved the idea that Rook was fine with people running from him--to him that makes it all the more thrilling. But then you start running away from him and that just ends up making dread pool in his stomach.
My favourite lines from his story: “‘When something ends, it must be sad. So, tell me then, how an ending could be so beautiful?’ [...] .‘But there was one ending that was beautiful, non?’ [...] ‘That’s right. ‘They lived happily ever after’—are those not the words that define a beautiful ending?’”
I used the dusk metaphor for Rook. My idea is that he starts seeing dusk as an ending and how he can’t fathom how any “ending” is beautiful. When a story ends, it’s not beautiful to him, humu. But when that ending is the happily ever after then... That makes all the difference.
Lilia was actually easier than Rook’s but also fairly difficult. I had written the middle of Lilia’s piece while stumped on Rook’s actually. Lilia’s was probably easier because I love the idea of immortals and mortals.
I don’t really like the idea of mortals becoming immortals. Like, yes, it’s certainly sweet and spending eternity with a one true love is definitely the best possible ending but... I think there’s so much weight in an immortal choosing to love a mortal while knowing that they will ultimately lose them.
The biggest theme for Lilia is definitely time.
Thinking about it now... There’s been a lot of things in real life that’s just... Made me think about how we have less time than we actually think we have. And I think I ended up channeling that through Lilia... Though I feel like it is ultimately things Lilia would think about though.
The most important imagery would probably be the stars.
I honestly wanted to avoid it because I used celestial imagery for both Kalim and Malleus but the words just flowed out in a way that I felt that I couldn’t replace. So I went with it.
Lilia is no stranger to loneliness. One of the reasons he feels less alone is because he has family now and he doesn’t want to rob you of that. Family is so important to him because they are people who are meant to be with you--they are people who will make you less lonely--or so thats how I think? he thinks.
My favourite lines from his story: “He would relish in the way—You made the world pause. You made a moment extend into an eternity. You made an immortal crave just a little more time.”
I’m so immensely proud of this one? I don’t really have much else to say. There’s something so raw about it that I love. Also the part where it continues on to say that “Because there is never enough time.”
Me realizing my extra notes is just half me simping over these characters, half sharing headcanons, have actually giving good advice? perspective?, half song lyrics, half character study/analysis?
“lucky ending” is about change. Whether we want them to happen or not it’s... the human condition to change. For better or worse, we change--day by day. I think we all operate under a small panic about how everyday things are changing...
But “lucky ending” is also about the things that don’t change. Won’t change. Will never change. The things worth holding onto, the thing worth fighting for... or so I’d like to think.

Thoughts after rewatching Episode 4
Okay, so I took a couple of days to get over the excruciating cringeworthyness of a few many moments in episode 4 and have just finished rewatching it.
And I have to say thank goodness for whatever it is in the human brain that allows us to adapt! lol No, but srsly, I found it a much easier watch the second time, and its definitely keeping up the trend of the first three episodes of being something I can enjoy more the second time than the first.
So, my now somewhat less instant reaction thoughts:
I hadn’t noticed that it’s Sylvie that initiates the hand holding on Lamentis 1. And I think I prefer this. One thing I can’t stand is romance in TV or film where it’s all about the guy winning over the girl, like she’s clearly not interested, but somehow by the end of the movie she’s in love. Okay, that’s a bit harsh, sometimes it’s done well, but it’s a convention that gets my hackles up and gets me all defensive, so I think I was taking some of this into the episode with me.
Interestingly, now that I’m thinking of it, I think this moment and the moment Sylvie asks if Loki is okay while they’re being escorted by the guards are the only moments I can recall where she showed any form of affection for him. *shrugs*
Poor boy also seems so surprised at this. And uncertain how to respond. And I can’t help but see this in relation to the scene in Thor 1 where the frost giant grabs his forearm... :’(
I also think another part of the reason I so disliked the romance on my first watch is that it was just another example of Loki over-doing the emotion thing in comparison to his previous characterisation. He certainly looks more into it than Sylvie, and this just bugs me, because again I think the way Sylvie is acting here is what I would have expected from Loki based on the films.
In the time prison, while I still don’t like the getting kicked in the crotch gimmick, I do like that they showed us Loki attempting to get out of the situation in what seems quite a reasonable way. He explains the situation to Sif and asks for her help to escape. I thought it was quite interesting, because we see his first instinct is to use his skills of persuasion and try to escape. Firstly because it’s an instance where he’s trying to plot an escape, not just avoiding her or fighting her. I like that he seems to have some hope that this is possible and isn’t just 100% resigned to the TVA being all-powerful. And secondly, he speaks to Sif as a person, he doesn’t just treat her like some sort of solid hologram and try and knock her out, or stand by the door to make a surprise attack. It doesn’t work, of course, and we’re supposed to find that funny, but at least he tried in a plausible way onscreen. unlike IW And he asks her to trust him. Which I found interesting because if he’s asking this then he must think there’s some chance that she will, which means there’s at least some level of respect between them. And I like that. I know I’m reading way too much into this that the writers certainly didn’t intend, but let me play over here.
I still don’t like the narcissist line. But I think I can buy Loki exaggerating in his confession to get her to stop. He doesn’t seem to be really particularly bothered by what he’s saying. But when she walks out and says he will always be alone, even after what he’s just said, that seems to have an impact on him.
I do love this image though. He looks so smol. So sweet.
When Mobius retrieves Loki from the time prison after the first time, I can see after a second watch that Mobius is actually a little angry/disappointed that Loki ran off after the variant in Roxxcart. Its subtle well subtler than Loki’s reactions so I hadn’t noticed.
I still dislike the way they did the romance thing. The interrogation scene where Loki’s all “eww no, I don’t like her!” and then has this realisation that perhaps he does. I felt like I was being beaten around the head with it. Like teenagers teasing someone for liking someone else. smh
I’m also reminded that the English language really isn’t very good when it comes to words for ‘liking’ someone. I mean the UK seems to have ‘to fancy’ which would be more accurate, but gotta say I’m glad they didn’t use that here.
I still hate that Loki seems utterly unable to keep a secret or hide his emotions. To me this was a fundamental part of his character, and yet here we have Mobius calling him out because he can’t help but have this pained expression on his face and can’t keep his voice steady. Black Widow wouldn’t have had to spend more than a minute with this variant of Loki.
Mobius: “What are you doing?”
Loki: “Passing the time.”
This line made me laugh this time. Sassy Loki!
I still like the slightly veiled way Mobius apologises to Loki for saying he’s only destined to be the villain to make other people better. Nice, not too over the top. Makes Loki smile.
That animatronic timekeeper stuff was just weird. There better be some good payoff for this in the next two episodes.
And now to the bit I hated the most on my first watch – that super cringey interrupted confession of feelings.
Looking at this again with fresh eyes I wonder if Loki was about to explain Mobius’s theory that their moment on Lamentis 1 might be able to destroy the TVA. It just got awkward because to explain that he’d have to explain how he feels. And I think they exaggerated that to make the impact of the pruning bigger.
First he says “then who created the TVA?” Then he turns away and he seems to be looking around for inspiration, and I think he’s actually thinking about this. It wasn’t just rhetorical. We can see the moment he realises something, and he doesn’t seem particularly happy about it, and then he turns back to Sylvie.
“Sylvie, I have to tell you something.”
“We will figure this out.” I think this is an aside after he’s taken in how upset she is about this. And it’s true that if they take down the TVA then they probably have to learn who’s in charge eventually. And then he gets back to his original point.
“Because… er… back on Lamentis…” I think here he’s trying to find a way to explain that their moment caused the nexus event, and a big one at that, but he’s struggling to do so in a way that doesn’t make him completely vulnerable by telling her how he feels. But it’s not possible to talk about it so clinically, so he hesitates, “This is new for me…” he realises he doesn’t actually know quite how to put this.
Now, if I can rationalise it in this way as being an important piece of information he needed to tell her that would help them bring down the TVA then I can be more okay with this than if it was just a poorly timed romantic confession (which is certainly what it appeared to be on first watch). Again, I’m probably clutching at straws here, but it helps me not want to gag while watching this. lol
I mean I still think it’s just a cringey awful scene and it’s so very cliche to interrupt someone before they can say ‘I love you’. But this is a way I can rationalise his actions and I’ll stick with this till proven otherwise, presumably in the next episode. Ha!
I can’t help but give a nod to another beautiful example of Tom’s eyes matching his shirt in the mid-credits scene. <3
I also think that what I’m experiencing watching each episode the first time is much more from Loki’s point of view. Like I’m more personally invested in him doing well, him not being embarrassed, him looking good to others. And so since the story is actually giving him a hell of a time I’m experiencing a lot of negative feelings on his behalf. And this is because it’s unfolding in real time in front of me and in that moment it could go anywhere! So it feels more real perhaps?? On a second watch I know what’s coming and I’m able to watch it with an eye for the storytelling as a whole, not just as the real events of Loki’s life. I don’t think I’ve been this much of a fan of any character in recent times to have experienced this before. So it’s a fascinating thing to learn about being a fan. *shrugs*
Anyway, in summary, much more bearable on second watch. Some good stuff in there, and I can ignore a good amount of the stuff I didn’t like – at least until next week.
So again I’m sorta somewhere in between loving and hating this show.
@iamanartichoke @scintillatingshortgirl19 maybe some of this is useful to you?

Dating Headcanons for Aomine and Kagami
In honour of my dear friend Jackie @todorokibois finishing her rewatch of Kuroko no Basket, and the accompanying Ace Brainrot she has as a result, I have made this. Is it stupid long? Yes. Did I have fun making it? Yep! Am I going to have her screaming at me tomorrow? Absolutely! Anyway! Enjoy this monster of a headcanon folks!
Aomine Daiki x gn!reader x Kagami Taiga
Wordcount: 2,540
Kinda an awkward fellow at first
He has the emotional awareness of a brick wall so he's not exactly the most in tune with his or others feelings
It would take quite a bit for him to even realize he has feelings for you
Oh man but once he does?
All those feelings he was denying or ignoring hit him hard and all at once
As if Daiki got hit by a bus (a bus made of feelings)
Once he has acknowledged that he likes you
Well, then he gets a little more awkward
Because he has no real clue what he is doing
He has asked Momoi about what he should do, considering she's the more emotionally aware one of the pair
But her suggestions largely consist of classic and almost stereotypical wooing gestures
So with her generic advice in mind
He will buy you flowers and ask you if you would meet him for coffee at "that one place you say you like"
(Like he totally doesn't remember the exact name, location and your regular order after you mentioned it a couple times)
Once you'd get there he would have your drink already ordered, with a nice snack for you there too
And as you sit down to chat and eat, he would hand you a nice bouquet of your favourite flowers
And ask you if you would like to go on a date with him sometime
If you don’t want to see a flustered Daiki, don't mention how this meetup for coffee could be a date.
He will have steam coming out of his ears, because he will internally malfunction.
Daiki will actually be genuinely suave once he figures out he doesn't need to be so performative all the time
You like him for him, not because he acts like a character from a shojo
Honestly there's nothing he enjoys more in this relationship then getting to see you smile
Listens to you so well, he is always attuned to you.
He will play every gift he gives you off as if he didn't remember you talk about how much you loved that piece jewellery because it reminded you of something a character wore in a few episodes of your favourite childhood cartoon one time 2 months ago
And he definitely didn't pick up extra jobs in order to get the cash to pay for it
No way, it was completely a coincidence.
As you may have guessed, the ever blunt and arrogant Aomine Daiki's love language is gift giving
He just wants to see you smile
And if making or buying you a little trinket just because it reminded him of you will do that then so be it
Daiki would honestly pay any amount of money or spend any amount of time if it meant he could make sure you felt loved
Dates are often spent with the two of you just chilling around the house
Netflix and take out on the couch while you wear your PJs? His favourite way to spend a Friday off
Dates where he tries to make you dinner from scratch? Yes please, he wants to impress you through your taste buds. (Which doesn't always work the way he wants)
But he does love to take you out for lunch or dinner
He will offer to pay for everything anytime you go out
Speaking of paying even if you insist on going Dutch
He is absolutely going to attempt to pay before you can even get your wallet out
It honestly becomes a game for you two to see who can pay for dinner first.
The only time he actually lets you pay on a date if say you're going to be driving some distance for a special date
Then he's chill if you pay for the snacks while he pumps gas on your way to that festival in the next city over you both wanted to attend.
He tries so hard to be a gentleman around you
You make him more humble, and he wants to be the best version of himself possible for you. Because you make him want to put in the effort to better himself.
But all that goes out the window the moment you attend one if his games
Then his usual attitude gets even worse, he becomes an actual monster when he plays on the days you watch
The pride he feels when winks at you as he scores the final basket of the games.
Its subtle but its his way of saying "See that babe? That was for you"
This man also lives for post games smooches
His team hates it (they're jealous because you two are so damn cute)
But he will always press his forehead to yours, and ask breathlessly if he can kiss you
Once you say yes, he leans in slow and with a ghost of an I love you resting on his tongue shows you just how he feels
His hands steady on your waist, holding you close as his lips press against yours and takes your breath away. The way you some how always manage to take his away every time he looks at you
When he pulls away for a breath, your noses touching, your lips still millimeters apart, he will tell you that he loves you
All in all, he may not know exactly what he's doing, but man is Aomine Daiki in deep. He wants nothing more than to be the light in your life that you've become for him. Please take care of this Ace's heart, he's trying his best for you.
Taiga is genuinely intense when he likes you
To the point where the moment he knows he likes you, you know too
Now to other people they may think its embarrassing, but he honestly doesn't care
Once Taiga's sure of his feelings for you the man could care less if other people knew
Because why should he hide away how he feels for the sake of other people
Arm wrapped around your shoulder as you walk beside him
Always offering to help you out even if it makes him go far out of his way
Actually telling you straight to your face that he's doing all these things because he has feelings for you and wants you to reciprocate them
Taiga really can be a tactless dumbass sometimes but, hey at least its cute how he's trying to woo you
He wouldn't immediately ask you out though
No he saves that for when he's sure you reciprocate those feelings
Because let's face it, if Taiga likes you, you're most likely already his friend
So when he attempts to pursue you romantically, it is literally everything you could want
He'd honestly know just how to not only fulfill the things he knows you want and even daydreamer about having in a partner while still making it genuine to who he is as a person
Now his love language is absolutely Quality time
So when you two are hanging out together, you have his undivided attention
Taiga honestly would schedule time in his training regiment's schedule when he's preparing for tournaments
Even if its just a 30 minute phone call
He sticks to it
And when you do start dating, he ensures that you go out on a date once every two weeks, minimum
Stay in dates are accepted and appreciated
In fact it was on one of those stay in dates where he asked you to be his significant other
He also texts you quite a bit
Even if its just to say "I know you're busy but make sure you remember to stay hydrated"
Or to send you a cute picture of #2
When you do go out, its usually to do some fun or spontaneous event
A pottery class? Sure why not
Rock climbing at a gym? Let's try it out, maybe you'll even catch each other falling so you can make a corny ass joke
A Tango class? Why not! It could even help with his footwork in basketball
Taiga just wants to spend time with you so he s down to try anything you want at least once
So as long as you're excited for it he'd be happy to accompany you
Even if its just to go get groceries.
He's not terribly jealous by himself, but sometimes if you're out on a date and he's feeling like he hasn't seen you enough in recent weeks
He might steal your attention back from whomever you were speaking with.
Will take you to professional level basketball games
Heck one time you two went to see the Harlem Globetrotters and it was one of the best nights of his life
The both of you were amazed by the tricks and laughing along with the jokes.
You both even got a signed ball after one of trick shots ricocheted off the rim of the basket hit him on the head.
You two have a custody agreement for that ball by the way
But hey that was the risk of sitting court side, and at least it was a great memory
By the time you two left the gym, your cheeks hurt from smiling so widely
And as you two discussed the event as you walked back to his car, the streetlights hitting your face just right
In that moment he realized that he was absolutely and intensely in love with you.
It was honestly really sweet. But did he tell you how he was feeling? N o p e
But speaking of basketball
You are invited to every single one of his games
He wouldn't be mad if you couldn't come to every one, but he hopes that you would come support him at his big tournament games
On the days you go, he plays about 1000 times better
Riko loves those days because he listens to her and the Hyuga when they propose strategies without complaint
She especially likes it because he never loses when you show up
Yes she does ask you to go to every game and practice Seirin has.
And after every game, he takes you out for dinner. Even if its just at a 24 hour fast food joint. You two share a meal after each and every game you attend
He honestly looks forward to those times more than the actual games sometimes
Taiga isn't the type for extreme PDA but you bet your ass he loves to kiss you
No matter where you are, if you’re out together, he's giving you kisses
His hands resting on your cheeks, delicately stroking your skin with his thumbs
As he tenderly presses his lips to yours, passion and adoration oozing from his kiss
Because even though he has a hard time saying how much he loves you
The emotions he can't quite find the right words to say all come through with every press of his lips against your skin
All in all, dating Taiga would be fantastic, he's caring, considerate and always confident in both you and the relationship.
Now let's start off by saying Taiga becomes so much more jealous when he realizes Daiki is also pursuing you
The pair immediately turn it into a competition
If one of them buys you lunch, the next day the other is taking you for an expensive dinner
Taiga asking you to go to one of his games again? Sorry Daiki already asked you to go to his on that day
Daiki asking if you wanted to watch a movie at his place? Nope! Taiga bought & gifted you tickets for the concert your favourite band was putting on and had asked you to go with him months ago
Lord help you if they're playing against each other
Both will show off to the point its detrimental to their teams
You thought they were intense before? HAH! The tension between them is almost crushingly heavy now
(There's a reason for that) They bet that whoever won would be the only one to take you out for a month and the other person can't even ask.
Yes that bet is dumb
Yes their coaches kicked their asses for how they're behaving
After that they realize that maybe they shouldn't fight over you like you were a prize to be won
Because they both notice how much seeing each other fight like that hurts not just their relationships with you
But how it hurts, you in general
So with heavy and begrudging hearts they set their romantic rivalry aside
And come to you hearts in their hands and ask you if you'd give them both a chance
Because they recognize that at this point, if you haven't picked one of them
You probably aren't going to choose just one of them
And they would be damned if you chose to just walk away because of how they were acting
So after some explanations of their jealousy towards the other boy on their parts
And you willing to forgive their weirdness
You are now the happy owner of not one puppy of an Ace as a boyfriend.
But two doting Ace boyfriends!
Their individual relationships with you are mostly the same as above
But there are a few throuple dates, where you all go do something together
Heck sometimes the boys will do something without you and have little boys dates
By god can they be protective of you
Creepy old man staring at you? Taiga and Daiki are already glaring at him like nobody's business
Getting hit on and are uncomfortable? Daiki is dragging the person outside to beat the shit out of them while Taiga makes sure you're okay and feeling safe
They actually make a great team in terms of the relationship. Working in tandem to make sure you're happy, healthy, safe and feeling loved
The cuddle piles you find yourself in, are exquisite
Your back smooshed against Taiga's chest and Daiki's head resting on the top of your head while he holds you tightly
Who needs a blanket anymore? Certainly not you my dear, you have two very hot Aces to keep you warm now!
And you bet your ass those two will eventually end up kissing each other
Because well their competitive spirit towards each other never truly went away
Now their competitions look more like "who can kiss our significant other more"
(BTW the score for that one is Daiki III Taiga II, because Taiga fell asleep 3 hours before you and Daiki did the last time they played that game. Taiga still hasn't forgiven his brain for that)
The boys eventually come to terms with the fact that they think the other is hot, and sometimes (ie. Most times) they want to kiss.
They will absolutely deny it if asked by anyone but you. Because they don't mind you seeing them smooch, because then you may join them in the makeout session.
They may say they're as straight as an arrow, but every arrow has some flexibility to it under the right circumstances.
All in all its actually a really healthy poly relationship, once they get their heads out of their own butts that is

can i rq for insecure s/o that have a beautiful body but she recently gained weight and kept overthinks it, but none of her friends are helping her out cause they think her body is nice and keeps taking her insecurities lightly.. for kuroo and oikawa pls
Imagine for Kuroo & Oikawa with insecure FEM S/O lacking a support system.
A/N: Wow I love this ask with my whole heart. Even chose two of my favorite characters. And may I just say these two might be the best in this situation, given that they’re captains, and aside from Bokuto captains are very aware of their teams and the general mental state and morale of every person on their team, so they might be the best people for this situation.
TW: Body image issues, self-esteem issues
Now: Imagine time!!!
Kuroo Tetsurō
-Kuroo would notice you spending more time in the bathroom. More time picking out outfits. And your generally more disgruntled demeanor
-He can tell you’re unhappy, but he cannot tell what about. As far as he knows there’s nothing that’s happened. But he figures you’ll tell him in time whatever is bothering you.
-And then one day he’s out with you and your friends and one of them compliments your outfit and your body.
-He sees the way you immediately flush and reject the compliment. It’s not a humility thing or a simple deflection out of embarrassment, he can see you wholly and fully rejecting the compliment. You don’t even look like it made you feel good.
-He takes your hand in his and is about to ask you if everything’s okay when one of your friends whines about how pretty girls always fish for compliments
-He notices how your chuckle is feigned and your eyes look beyond hurt, watering a bit. How you squeeze his hand slightly.
-Your mutter out something he can’t quite make out over the sound of everyone else talking, but it’s something along the lines of you mentioning your weight gain. And it clicks for him.
-One of your friends talks about how you still look “fine” and he can’t take it anymore. You’re far from fine. As far from fine as it gets. You’re magnificent, an absolute treasure, and fuck them for not noticing that the most beautiful girl in the entire world is not happy
-Fuck them for not seeing it. Fuck them for hurting you. He is not having it.
- “I’m sorry everyone, we’re headed home now,” he says, already standing up and grabbing your purse to hand to you.
-You follow his lead solely because you’re scared if you don’t you might burst into tears in front of everyone and you don’t want to cause a scene.
- “Awww come on where’re you going? Why can’t you guys stay?”
- Kuroo doesn’t miss a beat, “I need some alone time with my gorgeous girlfriend.” He turns to you, speaking barely above a whisper, “You ready to go, love?”
-You nod at his gentle words and head back to your apartment together.
~~~~
When you enter your apartment, Kuroo immediately pulls you into a tight hug. “I’m sorry,” he whispers to you, tucking his body into yours, head into your neck, arms wrapped tight around you.
The tears you’d been holding back fall freely from your eyes and into his shirt, “I’m sorry, Tetsu I--”
He pushes you back, holding your shoulder at an arm’s length, “What are you apologizing for, love? You’ve done absolutely nothing wrong.” You can’t meet his eyes, forcing yourself to stare down at the visible extra weight you’ve put on.
“For… not looking like the girl you fell in love with,” it’s all you can say before the sobs start pouring out. Hating your body. Hating yourself. Hating yourself for putting the most caring man you’ve ever known through this with you.
The sobs tear through your body leaving an aching wreckage in your chest and your stomach and your back and your throat. There’s nothing left undamaged. Every bit of you is in so much pain and is shaking, like the pain you’ve been feeling finally exploded and is trying to escape by any means it can, fighting to escape even through your shaking fingertips.
Kuroo puts his hand to one cheek and wipes the tears on that side, he bends down so his face is in front of yours, “Look at me.” His voice is soft and comforting filled with the love, care, and respect you had grown used to, but these words were packed full of them. Even when you knew you didn’t deserve all the affection.
He inhales deeply, “Deep breath in through your nose,” he exhales softly, smiling with his eyes as he blows lightly on your tears sending coolness into your burning cheeks, “And out through your mouth.”
You copy him as he repeats this until your breathing steadies. Until your heart has stopped slamming against your chest. Until the pain in your body is reduced to a dull ache.
Your eyes are still on his, and he’s looking at you with passionate love and fierce compassion, “There she is. There’s my beautiful girlfriend,” he says with a shy smile.
“I’m not---” a sob threatens to reappear, but you catch it in your throat.
“Love, you are beyond gorgeous. Your body is so sexy and still so adorable and pretty. I don’t know how you do it,” he kisses the crown of your head, “you mean the world to me,” a kiss to your forehead, “and if you call my world anything less than a goddess, anything less than perfection,” he kisses both of your eyelids and the tip of your nose in quick succession, “I will have to fight you.” He punctuates his sentence by planting a kiss on your lips.
“Tetsu, just because you’re my boyfriend, doesn’t mean you have to lie to me. It actually means you shouldn’t lie to me. And I know I don’t look good like this.”
His shoulders fall. And he has a sad expression on his face, but his eyes are still happy and you can see the smile tugging on his lips as he looks down, “Oh I get it,” he takes a long pause, “you think I have bad taste.”
You hit his arm playfully, “Tetsu, I’m serious!”
“So am I!” he shoots back, chuckling lightly.
“Okay, love, I know you don’t believe me. But you are seriously gorgeous. Completely, out of this world gorgeous. Beyond any person, place, or thing I have ever seen. The whole cosmos comes together to make the Earth and everything in it and around it, and the only part of any of it that’s worth seeing is you.”
His words feel raw and sincere, but you’re about to reject his kindness when he says the words you’ve been waiting for, “But you don’t see yourself that way. And that means you’re wrong…. But you do deserve to feel as beautiful as you are. And to feel as happy as you always make me. So if you want to come with me on my runs or if you want me to help you with anything let me know. I think you’re gorgeous but more than anything you deserve to be happy with how you look. So I’ll be right there by your side to get you there safely and healthily.”
You start to tear up again, your chest welling with love for the man before you. You collapse into his hold, and he holds you tight. He pulls away slightly to get a look at your face, “On one condition.”
You nod.
“I disagree, but I still believe that you don’t see yourself as beautiful. So even if you disagree ... can you please believe me when I say I know you’re absolutely bewitching.”
You nod again, and he pulls you in close to his body, happy to have brought you peace.
Oikawa Tōru
-It wasn’t intended to wound you. In full honesty, it wasn’t intended for you. But you’d heard it nonetheless and it was roaring through your mind.
- “Pretty people never date down.”
-You’d heard in passing as you walked down the street. But the words bounced around, rattling everything in your mind.
-You never thought of yourself as particularly pretty, but you’d certainly done yourself no favors by putting on a healthy amount of “relationship weight”.
-You tried going to your friends, desperately craving some semblance of comfort or hope for your relationship with THE universally recognized pretty boy Oikawa Tōru.
-They shot back sarcastic comments about your “pretty girl problems”
- “Former pretty girl problems" was the only thing your brain could shoot back, determined to push you into a hole with the crushing anxieties you had about your body now doubled up with losing the person you loved and trusted most in your life.
-You walked into your apartment, your boyfriend on his laptop watching and rewatching one of his games, taking notes on his performance as well as the performance of each of his peers.
~~~~
“Hey baby how was your day?” his words are unfocused. Almost like he’s reading from a script as he jots down more notes and rewinds to rewatch the same play again.
“Terrible,” you say, honestly believing he’d be too caught up in his game to care. Who’d care for the ugly girl they were stuck with anyway? He probably stuck with you out of sheer pity.
He immediately paused the game and turned back to face you, “Aww no, what happened, baby? Come here.” his arms were open wide for you on the couch.
“You know you can leave,” you said before you could think better of it. You regretted it. You didn’t want him to know that. You selfishly wanted him to stay with you forever, even if only out of pity. But… he did deserve better.
“What?” he asks quirking a brow, aware of how serious you sound, “I don’t want to… leave. Do you just need some alone time, Y/N? I can go on a run or something if you need some time to clear your head.”
“I meant ... leave me,” you say, your voice weaker and higher this time as tears that you hadn’t even felt forming started blurring your vision threatening to spill any moment.
He was in front of you in a heartbeat, “I’m sorry. I’ve been focusing too much on other things, haven’t I? I promise I don’t wan--”
“No the problem is you’re focusing too much on me!” your voice comes out as a yell and you see the half-step he takes, backing away from you, “you deserve better Tōru. You should want to leave.” With that, the tears spill over and your legs give in as you fall pathetically to the ground.
This moment is the very reason he should leave. You can’t even hold yourself together. You’re not pretty, you’re not strong, you’ve yelled at him when he’s done nothing wrong… you hardly deserve him.
You feel his hand meet your cheek and you flinch slightly at the contact, but neither of you move. His hand drifts down to your chin, lifting your face up so your eyes meet his. Your anger and sadness triple down on you when you see he’s got a fake smile on, his eyes rimmed red, tears forming because of you.
“I love you. I am not leaving you. Full stop. So please tell me what’s bothering you, baby.”
You want to ignore him. You want to grab your things and leave so he can get started on finding a better match so he wasn’t stuck dating down. With his body and mind and humor and kindness, he’d have no trouble. He had a million fans on standby at any given moment anyway.
But you don’t. You don’t pack. You don’t leave. You instead, pull his body into yours, desperately clutching his shirt with whitened knuckles, sobbing into him.
With time you let his strong arms bring you peace. With your body molded tight against his, you eventually match his breathing, steadying yourself. His smell grounds you, the feeling of his hand in your hair calms you, and the soft, gentle praises he coos into your ear center you. Effectively, he slays every intrusive thought in your mind.
“You’re so perfect for me.”
“I never want to leave you.”
“You’ve made me the man I am today. I wouldn’t be here without you.”
“I know the path to being my best self, is a path I’ll only be able to walk with you by my side.”
“You’re my whole world, baby. Please stop discounting yourself.”
“I wouldn’t change one thing about you, baby. Not even your stupid jokes. Not even the way you tease me.”
“I love your mind and the way you think. How kind and passionate you are. How you support me through everything. How you take such good care of me and everyone you love. God, I love the way you love. I love how wholly and completely you give love. And I love your body, baby. I love how pretty your face is, how perfectly your body fits with mine, how completely, mind-blowingly sexy you are. All of you. There’s not one part of you I am not head over heels in love with. We’re an absolute knockout of a couple, but you are by far the better half. Baby, please believe that because it is the truth.”
Every word is woven between kisses and touches and the easing of your whole body and mind. There was no way these words were planned. They were genuine. You could hear the authenticity in his voice, even though the unpleasant raspiness that had formed as he desperately tried to hold back his own tears. He had you whipped. Completely convinced.
You belonged here right in his arms. Right up next to him. As close as the world would allow any two people to get.
After you’d calmed down completely he asked without looking at you so he could keep you close, “What happened?”
You told him everything. The words you heard. How they beat around in your head, leaving a cold thunderous ache throughout your body. How your support system had failed you. How he had saved you from the treacherous thoughts that were certain to continue sending you spiraling downward if he hadn’t fixed everything simply by being him. And how much you treasure him.
He let out a breathy laugh, that soon grew into a full-on laugh as the tears finally left his eyes.
“It’s not funny Tōru!” you pout, basking in the sweet sound of his deep laughter.
“I know,” he says, still laughing. He clears his throat and does his best to stifle down the laughter, but it keeps bubbling up, “I know, baby. I know. But you know how I feel and you know that’s not going to change.”
“Then why are you laughing,” you ask, giggling as you wipe the last of your tears from your face and wipe the ones from his.
“All I can think of,” the laughter breaks through his sentence, but he regains his composure, “is that you think I’m the prettier one.”
You hit his arm as you two laugh on the floor behind the couch, perfectly at ease with the man who you adore, and who adores you.
~~~~
Also just a reminder: Weight =/= beauty. So whether you are plus-sized, or thin, curvy, or flat, your body is perfect as it is. Just please stay healthy and happy and that’s all it takes. “Fat” does not mean ugly. “Skinny” does not mean ugly. Please stop associating these words. They’re not the same.
Beauty is your kindness and your compassion and your integrity. Your will to fight another day, your will to stand up for others, your will to give voice to the voiceless. It’s the way you look when you’re passionate and the way you constantly bring joy to others. So while I personally do understand associating my worth and my beauty with my weight, we all know that it’s just incorrect. Beauty does not fall into any physical mold, so please don’t try to hold yourself to a mold that was created by people who profit off your insecurity. You are you, and that is a goddamn blessing. You are you and that is more than enough. Your body is perfect. Please be kind.
Hot Cocoa Mix
Type: Kurapika x reader
Prompt: Jour de la Lumière givrée (Frosted Light Day) — A popular Winter Holiday commonly celebrated in the Yorbia Continent and the republic of Padokea. On the day of December 16, some people will go shopping for a gift at local shops to give to family members and/or lovers while others will prepare their snowflake lanterns. Such festivities will continue until 11:05 when strings of lights placed around the city or town will light up and people will begin to release their lanterns into the sky; creating a beautiful sea of lights.
Author Note: I hope you guys enjoy! I’m sorry this took so long, for so reason I just forgot how to write Kurapika’s character like it was insane. I had to rewatch the whole Yorknew Arc just to get a single idea.
(Prompts/Rules) (Holiday Masterlist)
The winter wind howled on from outside. Throwing around the snow that was falling from the sky with it, creating a painful whiplash to whoever crossed its path. Though that was the last thing on your mind at the moment for you could not hear the weather outside nor was aware of it as it was being drowned out by the loud chattering of people. Well, more like a swarm of people, who were interacting with each other throughout the tightly packed and crowded mall.
A clear sign that it was now the holiday season. More specifically, That today was officially December 16 and Jour de la Lumière, or Frosted Lights day, was upon you. Due to this many people, including yourself, were trying to buy lanterns or get a gift to give to family members.
“Oh I want this one! And that one as well!” Neon shouts out as she continues to pull out sweaters and throws them onto the pile of clothes in your hands. As people stare on and whisper to each other, quite confused at your strange group, You wondered if Neon truly even knew that she was supposed to be trying to get a gift for her father instead of herself.
“Miss Neon-n, aren’t we supposed to be finding a gift for your father? Eliza asks, worried about your well-being as well as how much the young girl was spending.
“Oh yeah… Well, I’ll just pay for these and then we can go find a gift for daddy.” Neon says happily, as she gives you her credit card and skips away with Eliza following in tow. Before leaving, Eliza gives you an apologetic look but you only shake your head. There was nothing for her to apologize for, it was your job as a bodyguard to take care of tasks such as this one.
Once the girl is reassured, you stagger over to go wait in line while balancing the large pile of clothes in your hands. Thankfully this line wasn’t as long as the other stores you have visited, so you should be able to catch up to the rest of the group rather fast.
As you wait in line, you let out a sigh while you ponder for a little. You wondered why you just felt so odd. Like as if you were kind of sad or…. gloomy? It was Frosted Lights Day, your most favorite times of the year, so there should be no reason for you to be feeling this way.
“Honey, I think you made a perfect lantern,” A young gentleman's voice says, catching your attention. Looking over, you see the man with an arm wrapped around another young woman. They both were in front of a vendor selling Make-your-own lanterns, the lady painting one herself. They must be a couple, you concluded to yourself as you continued to watch them.
The girl giggles happily to her boyfriend.
“You think so? I messed up the snowflake design though…” She admits, rather embarrassed at herself. The boyfriend laughs and kisses the girl’s temple.
“I think it’s perfect! Come on, let’s go pay for it.”
As the two pay for the lantern, you can’t help but realize your heart feels rather heavy now. Was that what was making you feel down? Because you couldn’t celebrate the Holidays with your own boyfriend, Kurapika?
You quickly took your eyes off of the couple, you were being ridiculous. It wasn’t like Kurapika was gone or anything, you would see him tonight like almost every night. You shouldn’t be feeling down just because Kurapika doesn’t celebrate the Holidays. It wasn’t his fault he grew up in a tropical climate and his people do not have winter-esk holidays.
You let out a groan as you start to feel even more gloomy than before. Why did Frosted Lights Day have to be your favorite holiday?
“Miss!” You are startled as you hear a voice yell in front of you, “It’s your turn to pay.”
You gulp, embarrassed you had spaced out and missed the fact the cashier had been calling your name for a while. Giving an apologetic bow, you walk up to her counter.
“S-sorry about that. I was a little spaced out.”
“I could see that.” The cashier mumbles out as she begins to ring up the items. You clearly heard the rude response but chose to ignore it. There wasn’t any point in starting a fight in a clothing store after all.
Originally you were going to go back to observing the area around you but you feel your phone buzz suddenly in your backpocket. Taking it out and opening it up, you see you have a message from Melody.
‘Miss Neon would like to pick up a cake from the bakery. It’s closer to your location do you think you could pick one up?’
Typing back a quick response in confirmation, you quickly put your phone back away and bring your attention back up to the cashier. You didn’t want to come off as rude or impatient for having your phone out after all.
After punching in the credit card when the cashier tells you the amount needed, you take the bags of clothes and leave the store. As you find a map of the mall nearby, you hoped Melody was referring to the cake shop you saw when you entered the mall. If not then you would have to deal with one of Miss Neon’s “episodes” for bringing her the wrong cake.
Swiftly moving around other crowds of people as you get to your destination, you notice something in the corner of your eye. Looking closer you see near another store stood a hunched over elderly lady seeming to have dropped some of her stuff. People walked by her but it seemed none were trying to stop and help her.
Letting out a sigh, disappointed by other people’s selfishness, you quickly make your way over to go help the elderly lady.
“Oh deary, thank you very much. You didn’t have to help little old me.” She tells you as you begin to pick up the dropped items for her.
“It’s not a problem,” You tell her, give her a small smile as you place the items back into the bag. Though as you were picking some of the items up you would pause for a moment to make sure your eyes weren’t tricking you. Some of them were quite peculiar. Usually gifts that were given or treats that were made for Frosted Lights Day were decorated with a winter theme in mind but this lady had more of a spring theme going on. Cookies and pastries decorated with flowers. Bright yellows, greens and orange colored wrapped gifts. It was far from the usual traditional way of doing things.
As if sensing your curiosity the elder in front of you begins to explain,
“Odd choice huh? Well, ever since I was a child I never liked the winter. Especially the cold weather and snow that came with the season. I much, much preferred the spring. The blooms of colors that came with the buds of flowers that grew. The many scents that you could come across. Just everything about spring was so perfect.”
You stopped picking up the last item to look up at the lady. Amazed at how happy and carefree she looked as she explained her love of spring.
“Though, my friends and family loved winter, especially the holidays that came with it. So, I just added my own signature twist to it.”
“As if it’s your own tradition…” You mumble out almost as if you are in like a daze as a thought comes to you. Finally putting the last item away, you hand the bag back to the lady as you stand up, “Thank you, Miss.”
The elderly lady didn’t understand why at first you had thanked her but when she looked at your eyes, without any words, she suddenly understood. When she had first met you, she saw an anxious storm brewing in you, with your eyes dark and a light sheen over them. But now, the storm was gone and your eyes were bright and shined like stars.
“Your welcome.” The elder mumbles out, giving you a small wave as you leave to travel further into the mall.
—.—.—.—.—
Kurapika lets out a heavy sigh as he punches in his floor number and leans against the wall of the elevator. He was utterly exhausted, taking care of the business in the place of Mr Nostrade was really tough. Though, Kurapika knew it would all be worth it.
As the elevator doors open on his floor, he clutches tighter onto the box in his hands. To anyone else walking by the package would look like a gift given for the holidays. But it was anything but that. For a pair of scarlet eyes laid in the box. Kurapika’s recent item he had obtained from his hard work.
As Kurapika continues to walk down the hall, he tries not to allow his anger cloud his judgement. Though he couldn’t help but feel an itching, almost burning, feeling come over his eyes as he recalls the events from earlier today. Those slimy bastards, Kurapika thinks to himself as their laughter and carefree manner echoes throughout his head. How dare they treat these eyes —the eyes of his brethren— as if they were just some sort of item to decorate their shelves. Some sort of useless toy…
“Kurapika,” The soft touch of your hand touching his cheek and your calm voice brings him out of his thoughts. As he slowly comes out of his trance, he realizes he had already gotten back home.
“(Y-y/n)...” Kurapika mumbles out, still slightly dazed. Even though no words are spoken between you two, you can tell what exact “item” was in the box he was holding. Especially at the fact his knuckles were white from clutching it so harshly.
In a slow manner, you lightly lean over and allow your noses to rest against each other. This Eskimo kiss type of act always had a calming effect on Kurapika, “Come downstairs when you are ready, okay?”
With that, you allow Kurapika to make his way upstairs to do his thing. You knew not to interrupt or press into him when it came to something like that.
In the meantime, you decided to finish up the activity you had planned for tonight. You just hoped Kurapika was up for it.
“Ah,” The sudden voice startled you. Turning around, you are surprised that Kurapika is already back down stairs. Usually, it takes him a while to calm himself when he finds a pair of scarlet eyes. Especially if he wants to find a safe place for it, “(y/n), what is all of this?”
A dash of heat comes to your face as you feel yourself slightly become embarrassed.
“W-well it is Frosted Lights Day and I know you never grew up with exactly ‘Winter’ and my holidays. But, I still thought we should celebrate in our own way.” You explain to Kurapika as you watch him make his way to the coffee table and grab the flowers and colorful paints you have placed out.
You can’t help but feel nervous as you wait for Kurapika to respond. Just waiting for a single word, anything at all.
“These are to decorate the lanterns right?” Kurapika mumbles out, breaking the silence as he picks up a white lantern nearby.
“Y-yes. It’s a tradition to make them.”
“Then, let’s do it,” Kurapika states as he gives you a smile, allowing all your worries to disappear.
Shuffling over to make room for you, You sit down next to Kurapika on the soft carpet decorating the floor. As you two begin to decorate the white paper lanterns you bought, you two converse about your day. You tell him about how guarding Neon at the mall went. While he slowly, almost hesitantly, tells you about his meetings today. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust you, you knew he would trust you with his life, but you knew it was still hard for him to open up to people about his vulnerable side.
“I see…” You say out loud once Kurapika finishes explaining. At this point in time, you were resting your head on his shoulder. In a slight way to comfort him while he was telling his story, “I’m sorry Kurapika. I wish people weren’t heartless, money grubbing bastards.”
Kurapika laughs, almost sarcastically in a way, before kissing your forehead. “I wish for that too. But soon I won’t have to deal with that anymore.”
“Oh yeah, your new job is coming up right?” You mumble, almost to yourself in a way. It was some sort of bodyguard job for an emperor if you were remembering it correctly.
“Yeah—“ Kurapika is cut off by a loud bell ringing out.
“Ah, it’s already time?” You shout out surprised as you take a look at the clock. It truly was already 11:05, you two must have been talking for a while.
As both of you make your way outside, with Kurapika helping you get to your feet, you gasp as you see the sea of blue and white lanterns. Even with the cold pricking at your skin, you can’t help but feel a happy warm-like glee fill you to the core.
“So pretty,”
“Yeah it is…” Kurapika states, almost breathless and amazed at what was in front of him. He had seen the lanterns a couple of times while he was exploring after the Kurta Massacre but always from afar, almost hard to make out the shapes. Never up close. Never like this.
After a little bit more of watching the lanterns go by, you feel Kurapika tap you from behind. Turning around, you see he has already lit both of your lanterns. “Ready?”
“Yeah..” You whisper out, breathless out how handsome your boyfriend looked in the soft warm glow of the lanterns you two had made. Taking your lantern, you two stand next to each other ready to send them off. “On the count of three, okay?”
“1…”
“2….”
“3..—“
“Ah. Wait.” Kurapika suddenly says, quickly searching for something in his pocket. Thankfully even though he caught you off guard, you are able to stop yourself from letting the lantern go. Confused, you look at your boyfriend as he finally finds the item out he was looking for.
“A string?” You questioned confused as your boyfriend grabs the lantern from you. Though, you soon realize what he was doing and can’t help but feel your heart flutter.
“Yeah, I don’t want them to get separated after all,” Kurapika explains as he ties the lanterns together, each with a bit of space in between so they don’t bump into each other when they float away. As Kurapika gives your lantern back to you, you can’t help but feel extra jittery now. “Ready, (Y/n)?”
“Yeah…” You whisper out, finally allowing both of your lanterns to slowly float up into the sky to join the others. In the sea of blues and whites, the warm orange glow from your colorful lanterns stick out like a sore thumb.
After the lanterns start to make their way higher into the sky, you quickly close your eyes and begin to make a wish to yourself. Though as soon as you are about to wish for something you feel something caressing your cheek. It took you a moment but you soon realize it was Kurapika’s warm calloused hand.
Quickly, almost worried you would open your eyes too soon, a pair of soft lips mold against yours. It’s hesitant at first giving you slight pecks but once Kurapika gains more confidence as he goes on, he dives in further to give you something more passionate.
It’s as if the world has stopped when you two slowly pull away from the kiss. It’s peaceful, quiet and as if nothing could ruin this moment.
Kurapika flashes you a rare smile and he rests his arm around your waist when you slowly open your eyes. Even though he ruined your chance to make a wish, you didn’t care in the slightest and press further into his touch by resting your head on his chest and draping your arms loosely over his shoulder. Softly, you two begin to hear some jazz music playing from a band down on the street below. Leaning in to rest his head against yours, Kurapika begins to slowly sway you two back and forth. There wasn’t any reason behind the actions, you weren’t even sure Kurapika knew how to dance correctly. But, all that you two knew was it just felt… right…
Taking in each other’s presence as the aroma of hot chocolate fills the air from somewhere, you can’t help but feel at peace. Especially as you watch your two lanterns float off into the horizon.
Never, ever, floating two far away from the other…
In order to lure Camila Cabello to “Cinderella,” Kay Cannon borrowed a page from Prince Charming’s playbook. Sony told Cannon she could direct the film — she had already been writing the screenplay — provided she could convince the pop star that “Cinderella” should be her acting debut. So off Cannon went to Miami to meet with Cabello, having packed a glass slipper she’d bought on Etsy, even though her producers told her that would be “weird,” she says.
“I was there for, like, 30 seconds. And I’m like, ‘I hesitate to do this!’ And I pull out this glass slipper. ‘Does it fit?’”
However embarrassing, the gesture worked. In May, Amazon Studios bought “Cinderella” from Sony — with Cannon’s blessing — and it will premiere on the streamer on Sept. 3. While it’s disappointing that the movie musical won’t primarily play in theaters, the director, who has a daughter too young to get vaccinated, sees only the bright side.
“If the goal is for people to feel joy,” Cannon says, “I think we’re going to reach more people.”
At 47, Cannon is among the still-too-small group of women directors who have a Midas touch for mainstream, feminist comedies. After getting her start as a writer for “30 Rock,” Cannon wrote the three “Pitch Perfect” movies and directed “Blockers,” an emphatically R-rated comedy with a dirty mind and a loving heart.
In summer 2017, Cannon had just completed filming “Blockers” when her agent told her that James Corden wanted to speak with her about a “Cinderella” project. She jumped at the chance — but only because she wanted to meet the late-night talk-show host, not because she had any interest in fairy tales or princess culture. In fact, Cannon was certain that any new “Cinderella” would be a non-starter, since Disney’s 2015 live-action version, starring Lily James, had grossed more than $540 million worldwide so recently. “Nothing’s going to come out of this,” she remembers thinking.
But when Corden and his Fulwell 73 producing partner Leo Pearlman pitched her the idea of a “Cinderella” musical with contemporary songs, saying she could rewrite the fable however she liked, she immediately changed her mind. “I have no poker face,” Cannon says. “And I was like, ‘I want to do this!’”
Cannon’s “Cinderella” has a thoroughly modern message. Ella isn’t interested in marriage, wanting instead to travel the world and be a designer. Cannon also toned down the canonical cattiness of Ella’s stepfamily, and upped the story’s comedy potential. All the while, characters such as the stepmother (Idina Menzel) and the prince (Nicholas Galitzine) are singing songs like “Material Girl” and “Somebody to Love” and “Pitch Perfect”-style mashups like “Whatta Man” with “Seven Nation Army.”
At every step, her guiding principle was “How can it be different?” “I wanted people to get their money’s worth,” Cannon says, “or why do it at all?”
In an interview with Variety, Cannon talks about how COVID-19 affected “Cinderella,” her experience as a woman director and how things have changed in comedy.
The Cinderella story has been told and retold, and had just been a live-action movie when you signed on to write this. How did you want your version to be different? And is it significant here that Camila Cabello is a woman of color?
Yes, I wanted to make sure it was incredibly inclusive. And her being Cuban Mexican is no small thing, and what she represents to millions of people — not only her fans, but to millions.
The story has mostly been told and retold almost exclusively by men: I feel it when I watch. The 2015 Kenneth Branagh “Cinderella” was hugely successful, and it was beautiful. And I love the Whitney Houston, Brandi “Cinderella.” It just feels a little told from their gaze. And I really felt like it was important to me to tell it through my gaze.
Can you talk about creating the Fab G, and what you wanted from that character?
So many amazing actresses have played that role — so I’d written that role to be a man. And, quite honestly, the only one who fit all of everything I wanted was Billy Porter; I wrote it with him in mind. He’s just such a great singer. He’s just so talented. Because I wrote it specifically for Billy, the character kind of came easy. I just wrote it in his voice, and tried to make it funny. I had actually had another song in there, and then as soon as Billy was confirmed, we picked “Shining Star.”
Is the Fab G gender non-binary?
We talked about it. In having many conversations with Billy, I was like, “I think the answer needs to come from you.” He has said “they/them,” and “magic has no gender.” Non-binary for sure.
You started filming in England in February 2020. Tell me about shutting down because of COVID.
We had shot the ball the first week of March, which is something I do not believe I would have been able to do coming back — and it wasn’t a super-spreader. I’d shot all of the Fab G stuff, and all the basement stuff.
It felt like something out of “The Amazing Race” — like, pack up all your stuff! I’d been in the U.K. for like four months, and my family was there. My daughter was going to school there, and my husband was the writer on set. So we packed everything up, and then Camila and her family and my family, we flew back. My husband’s family is in Maine, and so we just stayed in Maine the entire time.
That sounds so nice, actually.
I did all of post in a boathouse in Maine. It was pretty awesome, actually.
During the break, what were you doing?
It was like getting a second prep, really. I was working with my editor, Stacey Schroeder, and we were putting together what we had. And then I was able to see what I needed and what I didn’t need. And I was doing a ton of rewriting, and I was doing a ton of prep that we didn’t necessarily have. Because I had all the opening, I had the finale, I had “Somebody to Love,” I had “Am I Wrong,” “Material Girl” — all these big numbers.
Movie theaters have reopened, and this was obviously made with a theatrical audience in mind. How did the Amazon of it all happen?
Sony is a business, first and foremost. I know that Sony loves the movie, and that partnership was really great on that level. So I think it was hard for them to give it up, but I’m really quite happy that people can see this in this safety of their own homes with loved ones. And it is a wonderful theatrical experience, especially with the music and the sound and everything. And it will open theatrically in some theaters.
It not being a wide release in theaters means that we’re not healthy yet. And so that’s what’s the most upsetting — that we’re not healthy.
As you were moving from being a performer to being a screenwriter, did you always have directing in mind, or was that something that you discovered you wanted to do?
I was led to it. When I was at “30 Rock,” by like Season 5, I really wanted to direct an episode. And I was too chickenshit to ask. I was the writer/producer who was always on set — at that point, I’d spent my 10,000 hours on set for sure. And it wasn’t until I had a meeting with Nathan Kahane at Lionsgate, and he was like, “You should be directing your own stuff.” I have such a respect for academics, and I never went to film school, so I just didn’t think I could do it. And then once he put that in my head, I was like, “Yeah, you know what? I can do it.'”
And is that how “Blockers” came about?
Exactly. Yeah, they sent me the script with an offer to direct. And with no questions asked. I didn’t have to do any kind of auditioning.
That is very rare! Obviously, things have gotten better for women directors in the past few years, after years of the most appalling statistics. What obstacles do you feel like you’ve faced as a woman director?
Especially with “Blockers,” I had a very good experience. I feel like the obstacles I have to face really are from the powers that be that still fight me at every level on what women want to watch, or think is funny. Or what is funny — forget gender.
My stuff happens to have female leads, and it’s female driven. So the jokes are coming out of women’s mouths. And I cannot tell you the amount of fighting I have about what they think is going to work, and what they think isn’t going to work. And there’s a lot of like, “I have all the expertise, you do not have the experience.”
And it’s just like, ‘I’ve been working in the comedy side for 15 years now — successfully.” And so what ends up happening is, I fight and fight and fight, and then I just do it and get it in. And then it gets put in front of an audience and the audience laughs. And then they have to say, “OK, that does work.” And you might not think that that’s that big of a deal. Maybe that’s creatively for everybody. Maybe it’s not gender specific. I tend to believe that it is gender specific.
Is that at the studio level?
From my experience, it’s mostly the studio level. And maybe I’m just sensitive to it or whatever. But I just feel like there’s a lot of conversations about what is funny out of a woman’s mouth. What’s allowed. And I feel like no matter how much success I had with “Pitch Perfect,” I think it’s still as much of a fight now as it was then. Which doesn’t make sense to me.
With “Cinderella” too?
Oh, especially with “Cinderella.”
And now we’re back on the record after going off for a bit! I rewatched the “Black Tie” episode of “30 Rock” yesterday, which you wrote with Tina Fey, in which Paul Reubens plays an afflicted prince. That was the moment in Season 1 when I realized, OK, I love “30 Rock.”
[Affects Prince Gerhardt voice] “THANK YOU FOR COMING TO MY BIRTHDAY.”
That was the first thing I ever wrote! You know, professionally.
An unbelievable calling card to have as your first screen credit.
Yes! I was asked recently who is my Fab G, and my answer is Tina Fey. I wrote stuff as a friend she was reading. And I never thought that she would consider me for her staff, and she just grabbed me and was like, “You’re gonna do this!” I thank her every day for giving me that opportunity.
There are so many conversations right now about what’s acceptable in comedy. As a screenwriter who’s done mostly comedy, how do you feel about that?
Right now I think we’re in the muck, and I think we’re striving for equality. And we’re trying to work things out! Of course we should look back at things that were done 15 years ago, and be like, “Oh, no!”
I don’t know if this is a story I should tell. But I can remember getting notes to put the f-slur into “Pitch Perfect” as them being bullied like by the cool athletic guys. And I was like: “No! I can’t do that.” I think I put it in for a draft, and a friend of mine read it, and she’s like, “You cannot have that in.” And I was like, “It’s a note I was given!” I was told to do that, you know?’ And then like realizing, no, it’s unacceptable. You cannot use that word. Even if you’re trying to show that it’s awful, don’t do it.
You have to have your moral compass, and know what’s right for you. And there’s just some things we just shouldn’t tolerate anymore. And they’re just not acceptable. I’m certain if I looked back at stuff that I would cringe, you know? Or just, that’s how people thought then. And I was one of those people. But certainly now if you know better, you do better, right? Is that too soapboxy?
Word Count: 3700+
Masterlist
They say that nothing compares to the wrath of a woman scorned.
Well, they hadn't met Y/n yet.
"Are you INSANE?"
Leonard "Bones" McCoy was a great doctor, and had long since been an even better friend to recently made Captain James T Kirk of the Enterprise. With all the titles and fancy stuff aside, Bones knew a thing or two about fear. He had watched everything taken from him when his wife, many years, divorced him and drained him of every penny she could. He had faced a threat from the future most recently who's goal was to wipe the solar system of any species other than his own. He had watched his long time friend almost die. A lot. Like, A LOT. So many times it wasn't even funny and he had almost strangled the man himself when everything settled again. He had faced death himself once or twice though and in the end everyone was safe so he let it be. The point was, he had faced and conquered fear. He should be able to handle it.
Watching Y/n storm up to him filled him with more fear than he had faced looking at even Death itself.
Y/n was stern faced and tense. "Hey there," Bones greeted, ready to get lectured.
Instead of yelling, Y/n did something Bones didn't expect. He took Bones in his arms, hugging him desperately. Bones felt his surprise fade and embarrassment take over. Not because he was one of those people who didn't believe in affection between friends or men, but because he had a gigantic crush on Y/n and the feeling of the man holding him made him feel like a teenager again. He was an idiot, honestly. Good god man, he was a grown adult!
Yet, when Y/n held him at arm's length, Bones was blushing. "You didn't even call me when you got back. I had to hear about your little adventure from the news! From Jim of all people!"
Bones flinched. He had been busy since he'd gotten back. It had only been a few days and there had been so much going on... He didn't think it would have upset Y/n this much. The men were friends, having met a while back through Bones' now ex wife actually. Before he was married to her, Y/n had been a friend of a friend to her. When they'd gotten divorced, Y/n was there for him. Ever since they'd stayed friends, but as time passed Bones has recognized his feelings for Y/n had been... different. Especially when he became friends with Jim, he realized that how he felt wasn't normal for two close friends. He'd never had the confidence to take a shot and as Y/n tried his hand with other women, Bones wrote it off and assumed his chanced were kaput.
The look in Y/n's eyes right now though spoke of panic. Care much more than just one friend to another. It was moments like this that let Bones dream. He tried to put his own feelings down. Y/n didn't have a lot of friends or family. Bones was one of the few people he still had left after a hard life that had left him almost entirely alone. Of course he'd be worried about losing one of those people.
"I'm sorry," he sighed. "It's just been super busy-"
Y/n scoffed and rolled his eyes, cutting the other man off. "I hear you're allowed calls every once in a while." Bones gave him a confused look. "On the Enterprise, Bones! Come on- you're going back out there and if you're not going to tell me shit, then I'm going to demand you set up a call system so that every time you land you have me on the line dialing. I want it to be habit, do you understand?"
Bones couldn't hold back a smile. He tried to play it off as teasing, but his whole body felt warmer. "Oh come on, I'll be fine." His voice was soft.
"You better be." Y/n sighed, seeming to have calmed down. "Look, I just- I get it. Just let me know you're okay next time before I hear the news and go full panic mode, okay?"
Scoffing softly, Bones offered a, "Okay, mom."
Y/n smiled and the world got a little brighter. "You're an idiot." Then he turned and began to walk away. Bones watched, his smile coming in full steam now that he was alone.
Except... he wasn't. It was that second he remembered that there were other people in the Med Bay at that moment. Nurses mostly, but patients too. Every single pair of eyes was staring at him. All of them were amused and accusing. Knowing. Playful. He hardened immediately, scowling back at them. "Okay show's over, get back to work." He turned away and everyone smiled.
Idiots indeed.
-
"Are you insane?" This time it came from Bones and Y/n was on the receiving end.
Y/n wasn't going to take the lecture like Bones had though. "If you're going to be facing death all the damn time, I might as well be here to watch your back. I can't stand staying at home while y-" he cut off, stalling a second as his brain realigned. "As my two closest friends set off into the great space and throw their lives around like they mean nothing!"
Bones grunted in frustration. "Y/n, you're working as a mechanic."
"A damn good one too!" Y/n threw back. "I'm the King of repairs, and it seems you guys need someone like that on deck. You have the greatest captain, the best second in command-"
"A stretch," Bones grumbled.
"Amazing pilots and a mechanical genius who advanced beaming an insane amount. But even geniuses need help, and while he's a great mind, I'm great with my hands." Y/n rose said appendages, wiggling his fingers. "Plus it doesn't matter. Scotty was more than happy to have me on board and pushed for it himself. Went straight tot he Captain and everything. Jim was more than happy to have me aboard. That's it. I'm coming and you can't stop me."
A long, soft sigh escaped Bones then. "Fine, but if you get ANY injuries, you come to me directly do you understand? This stuff is dangerous."
Just then Y/n got a huge, shit eating grin on his face. "I was planning to, Doctor." Something about how he looked when he said it made Bones both nervous and excited. When they parted ways, Bones tried to not let the moment of seclusion allow his mind to wander too much.
-
"I just burned my hand," Y/n huffed impatiently. "Scotty needs me back, Bones. Just bandage it or something."
Bones tugged Y/n's hand closer by the wrist, glaring at him. "You're being too careless! My god Y/n sit still! You're whinier than Jim." That got Y/n to be quiet. Which in turn made Bones struggle not to laugh. After all, who would want to be compared to Jim Kirk in whininess? Even though he really didn't complain all that often, Y/n and Bones had a running joke that he was secretly a nine year old girl. Simply because it bothered him.
In the moment of silence, Y/n got the opportunity to really look at Bones. He watched quietly as Bones carefully applied an oily cream that made the stinging pain go away. It was soothing and cold; a huge relief. The lapse of pain allowed him to take a second to admire the features of the man tending to him. The smile lines that were hidden because he liked to be grumpy and sassy, but which showed every time he even cracked the tiniest of smiles or smirks. The deep color of his brown eyes and how the concentrated with unbreakable focus. The line of his jaw, hard as his teeth locked together. He had a small scar above his left eyebrow. It was something he'd never seen before. Perhaps he'd gotten it more recently... The curve of his nose drew his eyes straight to his lips.
Only then did Bones finish, of course, and as he looked over Y/n tried to look casual and as if he hadn't been checking Bones out. Which he most definitely had been. "Will that be all, Doc?"
Rolling his eyes, Bones let Y/n's hand fall. "For now. Be more careful."
Y/n hopped down from the bed, grinning widely. "But then what excuse would I have to visit you?" He laughed afterward to play it off as a joke, but there was a false tone to it. A truth in his words overcame the chuckle, so Y/n headed out quickly. Unfortunately it left a rather speechless Bones alone before he could come up with something to reply, and a bunch of smirking nurses all looking at each other with looks that spelled trouble.
-
When Y/n came in limping, Bones thought it would be for something more real than tripping and falling down stairs. The injury had seemed legitimate until only a few hours later Y/n was spick and span- even though Bones hadn't done more than ice it for ten minutes.
When Y/n had come holding his arm and wincing every time someone touched it, Bones was there dutifully even though it was only from slamming it in a door. He wrapped it up and gave Y/n something to help the healing and pain. In a few days he was perfectly fine, even though Bones had expected a few weeks of soreness at the very least.
It got only more ridiculous from there. From smashed fingers and headaches and sore throats and itchy eyes and sore muscles, Y/n was coming into the Med Bay for help from Bones once every few days. It was a record. Even when there was nothing going on, Y/n found increasingly creative ways to get hurt and end up needing some kind of help and attention. Bones took the opportunity with only minimal griping about Y/n's carelessness. To be fair, he was probably trying very hard to enjoy Y/n's company rather than focus on the fact that Y/n was rarely if ever sick and had a habit of being very careful. In severe situations, he was always the one with the least amount of damage. It seemed that he was prone for small accidents and that his luck magically returned every time it counted. Not that anyone was complaining, but it was rather odd.
Or, more fittingly, obvious. Everyone but Bones was seeing right through Y/n. One day the nurses finally decided to intervene.
Nurse Avery began the casual prodding. "I'm sorry that Dr. McCoy wasn't available to help you today."
"It's fine," Y/n dismissed, even though he was obviously very disappointed.
Avery nodded. "You two seem to be very close," she continued. This time her overly casual tone was overlapped with a pointed look, but both only made Y/n confused.
"Well, we've been friends for years. Even before he and Jim were," Y/n offered.
The nurse nodded her head, but her smirk said that she knew something. Or had assumed something. Or that what Y/n had said fed some sort of theory maybe? Y/n wasn't sure. "And how many years have you been clumsy?"
That made Y/n nervous. It was an odd question to ask, unless they knew the real reason he was in here so often. But surely that wasn't possible. "What do you mean?"
"You know exactly what she means," Another nurse, Simon, teased. He rolled his eyes, an amused smile curving his parted lips. "If your blush had anything to say."
Nurse Amy giggled. They were both doing other things but it seemed their attention was on the conversation. Even Nurse Lyro spoke to them now as they treated a patient. "We never see you in here after a big battle. And we all know that you're one of very few that is careful enough not to get hurt during catastrophes, which is odd since you're normally in the middle of it and not hiding like the others."
Y/n's frown wiped the smiles off their faces. "It's because I'm a coward." The nurses exchanged looks with each other. They hadn't meant to upset him. "Are you done?" He looked up at Avery. "With my hand?"
"Yeah," she answered softly. Her own fingers had stilled, resting on top of and below his hand. It had been mostly to keep him in place, but now she let it drop. "Do you-?"
"Thank you for your help." Y/n stood off the table, offering the girl a small smile before leaving the Med Bay. Looks were exchanged between the nurses again.
What had that been about?
-
"Dr. McCoy?" Bones looked over to see Nurse Lyro. They continued when he looked over, giving them his attention. "Have you seen Y/n recently?"
Bones pursed his lips in a frown. "I haven't. Why?"
Lyro shrugged. "Well Avery tended his hand a few weeks ago and we haven't seen him in the Med Bay since, not even for a check up."
It had been three and a half weeks to be precise, and Bones was worried. After seeing Y/n every three or four days, Bones had come into a routine of leaving a looseness in his schedule that would allow him time to tend Y/n. Only a few times did something unpredictable interfere with it which is when the nurses usually took over like last time. But in the last almost month, Y/n hadn't been by even once. Bones saw him occasionally outside of work, but otherwise Y/n made him scarce and the doctor would be lying if he said he didn't miss his friend.
"I'll have to hunt him down once I'm off my shift and make sure he's taking care of himself." Bones gave a short laugh then. "He's probably focused on some project or something. We'll have him back in here in a bit."
Lyro grabbed Bones' shoulder to stop him from leaving. "Last time he was here, we were talking and he said something about being a coward. It seemed to upset him..." They sighed. "I just wanted to make sure our conversation wasn't what upset him."
That seemed to confuse Bones. "A coward?" Lyro shrugged. "Huh. Okay." They shared nods and then parted ways. Right when Bones' shift left, he headed straight for Y/n's room. He knocked on the door a few times before Y/n answered. When he did, the man seemed to be battling between happiness and hurt. It didn't make sense. "Hey Y/n."
"Hi." Y/n leaned against his door. "Do you... want to come in?"
"Sure yeah I'd like that." Y/n moved to open his door more and Bones came inside. When the door closed, Bones turned back so they faced each other. "The nurses wanted me to check on your burn. You haven't been by in a while."
Y/n showed his hand. It looked fine, if only minorly scarred. "It healed nicely. Everyone in the Med Bay is pretty great. It's awesome."
Bones nodded. "I'm glad to hear."
There was a long silence. "Is that all you wanted to say?"
"Why did you say you were a coward?" It sort of slipped out, far from graceful. "You're always right there by Jim and Spock. You've even stepped in a few times for me, and no matter how crazy something is, you're always willing to do it if it saves someone. How could you think you're a coward?"
Y/n sighed, rubbing his eyes. "Jim is the brave one. He's always risking himself and protecting everyone. He's got all of our backs and cares a lot about what's right. Then there's Spock, and despite how much he tries to seem emotionless so he can appear in control, it's only because he's so smart that he hasn't gotten himself killed from how much he puts himself on the line to protect others. And you... Well, they'd both be super dead without you. Not just how great of a doctor you are either, but because you balance Jim's recklessness and Spock's focus on what's logical and such. You guys are like this unbreakable triangle of perfection where you all watch each other's back and without even one of you the other two would fail. I just... hide behind it. I do what I'm told and hide when I can. Do you know how many times each of your has stepped in when I was too scared to do it? How many times you guys have almost died because I hesitated or sat back or stopped functioning because I'm terrible in high stress situations? Scotty is the one who does all the important stuff. I just help him when he needs me to.He could probably do it without me, honestly. I just feel like the extra piece of an already completed puzzle."
It all came out soft and empty. Defeated. Bones rolled his eyes- he wasn't having any of this. "Do you know how many times Scotty has praised Jim for adding you to his team? You know a lot more about mechanics than he does, even though he's really smart about it. I've CAUGHT him just hitting things to get them to work. You might take more time and effort, but when you fix something it lasts longer than when Scotty does- even though he is better in a high stress situation or whatever." Bones scoffed. "If we're being real, no one is actually GOOD in those situations, some are just better than others. And even then, you know how many times Jim or Spock or I have had to clean up the messes of the other? You say we're like a perfect whatever, but half the time I want to strangle both of them and they each other. It's chaotic and we're all trying our best and because of you, we're doing a LOT better than we would be."
Y/n crossed his arms over his chest. "Do you know why I come by the Med Bay so often?"
"Why?" Bones asked, his tone tired as he expected some new reason why he was pathetic. Perhaps it was that he was too lazy to be careful, or that he was clumsy or easily distracted. Bones had arguments for all of those things.
Unfortunately that's not what Y/n said. "Because I'm in love with you." Bones was stunned into silence, processing what had just been told to him. "I only joined the crew because I hated being away from you. I hate flying and I hate space and confrontation makes me anxious. I'm terrible in combat and even worse at social interactions. I'm awkward and quiet and bad at carrying conversation, so instead of just asking you on a date like a normal person I joined the one place I didn't go, even though I graduated school for it. Do you know why I left?"
"No," Bones answered quietly.
"I was sixteen when I joined my very first crew. I was the head mechanic until one thing went wrong and I almost stranded the whole ship. In space. A very long time from help. Everyone said that I had taken a calculated risk in the face of a surprise attack from a planet that was supposed to be hosting us for a peace conference. I saved everyone or whatever." Y/n shook his head. "I used to be a prodigy. One of the youngest mechanics ever to join Star Fleet. And good at my job too. But I was too... I took too many risks. They rationalized that I was effective, but when I left no one asked about it."
Bones tried to remember any news about Y/n. Anything before he'd joined the Enterprise. "Why don't I know about any of this?"
Y/n chuckled darkly. "Because I was too impulsive and hard to control. I was bad with authority and didn't take anything seriously. Until it was almost too late. I was too young, and they'd taken a risk with letting me go to school and test- let alone join an actual ship. I almost got everyone killed because they took a chance. A chance they repeat, until Chekov. But that was years later and he was both dedicated and intelligent. Focused, and very aware if how important his job was. With me, they'd made a mistake, and they weren't about to let everyone know that."
"Is that why you're always so reserved?" Bones asked.
Nodding, Y/n leaned against the wall behind him. "My ego took a huge hit that day. I still haven;t really recovered." He scoffed at himself. "Now I can't even talk to you. We just hang out occasionally and you talk about your life and I listen. I support everyone, quietly. I can't even ask you out when I see you every other day or something. I just get distracted while I'm working then come to you with my newest injury and then I run away without ever saying anything with my tail between my legs. Like I'm eleven and afraid of cooties. It's pathetic."
Bones was still having a hard time wrapping his mind around this. "And why are you telling me now?"
"Well it's time I was honest. You've asked about my past loads of times, and it's not fair to keep bothering you without telling you why I'm always hovering. For once in my life I'm being both open AND level headed. So that you can see how pathetic I am and reject me officially so we can both move on."
"You're an idiot," Bones spat.
"Well yeah that's what I'm-" But he didn't finish that, because Bones grabbed his face and pulled him into a kiss, cutting him off. Y/n tensed but as Bones kept kissing him, he had no choice but to melt into him. What was he going to do? Push the other man away? I think the fuck not.
The kiss was earnest. Words that couldn't be found. Something that could only be explained in this way. Bones didn't give a single shit what Y/n had done in his past, or what he thought of himself now. To Bones, Y/n was... amazing, for some reason.
They parted, but Bones held onto him. "My best friend is James T Kirk and you think that you been a free spirit when you were sixteen was going to scare me away?"
Y/n did laugh at that. "You're not in love with Kirk though. You're just friends."
"But I am in love with you," Bones sassed rather firmly. "Got that?"
For a second, all of Y/n's insecurities slipped away from him, and he grinned. "Yeah. Got it."
"Good," Bones grumbled. Then he kissed him again and they got lost each other. The night had only just begun, and on the high of finally releasing all the pent up emotions they'd both been scrambling to keep under control, they finally took the opportunity to let it all go and make up for lost time. And boy did they.
i got tagged in a quarantino meme by ancient beloved mutual @handcrushedbyamallet okay let’s go
top 10 songs as of late (some of these are pre quarantine because i sometimes listen to music in weird spurts)
big baby by whitmer thomas to the point that even made my parents listen to it today its that catchy... he is a comedian + musician and the way he can switch from like david byrne to jim carrey to bob dylan voice like THAT is just #goals
the 3 am theme in animal crossing is def my favorite... that muted trumpet... omg
stupid love - lady gaga DUH
the new gorillaz releases are really good but i especially like momentary bliss
1000 umbrellas - xtc -- such a good breakup song LOL... learned it on mandolin recently which was easier than i thought it’d be because it was written for violin (which has the same fretboard as mando)
artists only - talking heads ... like.... i dont have to prove that i am creative YA HAA don’t have to prove that i am creative
mesmerizing - liz phair also just that whole album all the time
two trucks having sex. two trucks having sex (listened to this manically while packing my college dorm room For Good)
the waiting - angel olsen
everything on this last braincell playlist tbh
and then here are the quarantine ask meme questions:
Are you staying home from work/school? ya
If you’re staying home, who is with you? my parents and it’s been..... interesting
Who would be your ideal quarantine mate? i miss my college hallmate a LOT tbh because i could just come over with a bottle of wine and vent and then sleep.
Are you a homebody? i have to force myself to go out pretty often so ya, however if i don’t get enough human interaction i die, so, pretty average
An event you were looking forward to that got canceled? i was gonna see car seat headrest at mass moca on april 25th ... and who’s afraid of virginia woolf on april 4th ... also my graduation and play reading LOL
What movies have you watched recently? saw knives out on a plane... that’s actually all i can think of
What shows are you watching? better call saul which has gotten like So good recently wtf? also i watched tiger king like every other person in america. before quarantine i was deep into a mad men rewatch as well (i think season 5 is my favorite)
What music are you listening to? the above songs BUT ive noticed ive been listening to a lot more upbeat/contemporary stuff lately instead of my usual dad rock
What are you reading? for school: basically every bertolt brecht play + his essays...this fuckin guy! also, these plays from the english restoration period which are filthy and hilarious... we should bring back fops. i mean i know the concept of a fop still exists but we should start calling people Lord Foppington again.
outside of that...just a lot of nonfiction pieces. here is a really well thought out article in Current Affairs that makes some excellent points in the case against joe biden. also, as olivia said, a truly embarrassing amount of fan fiction
What are you doing for self-care?
i actually went on a Govt. Sanctioned Walk yesterday for the first time... it lightly drizzled... very restorative. also i had my first zoom class and i got to do some singing which made me feel a lot better also gave me the placebo effect of feeling like i’d worked out because i hadn’t seriously used my diapraghm like that in a while
i will tag @cycloramas @archivalrival @oscarisaacminipig @zazie @babyratparty@toadchavay @towneclowne and whoever else wants to do it lolllll
I am enjoying your comments/spec about S15, and I wanted to ask about the Cas being angry at Sam topic, if you happen to feel like answering. I’ve actually been feeling like Cas has been a bit off toward Sam for a long time (I could be biased; one of my enduring disappointments in SPN is their failure to develop Sam & Cas’s friendship/bond the way I think it should have and could have been). Like, for example, my entire household watched the Apocalypse episode where Sam dies in the tunnel twice and our perception of that scene was still kind of “Did Cas seriously just let Sam get eaten by vampires???” (to be fair, it almost happened to Dean as well). I don’t know if it was the writing or the directing or what, but I felt like they kept showing Cas, really not that far away, unconcernedly stacking rocks even after things were clearly getting kind of hairy for the boys. It took him a small eternity after Sam and Dean were shouting for each other and Sam got bitten to finally wander out of the rock place. And then he was a little quick to be like “welp, Sam’s dead, let’s go, Dean.” I know Misha Collins did the angsty face, but it lacked sincerity for me (the whole scene lacked impact, though, I thought). Did I miss something? And then in the Stepford-ish episode, I know it was supposed to be funny, and it’s nice that Dean and Cas communicate, but I felt not great about Cas sharing everything with Dean, including the embarrassing things. It was played for laughs, but I think Sam’s sense of betrayal was a little sincere (though it is Cas, so I don’t expect him to be able to be perfectly sensitive to this kind of thing) and it sort of drove the point home for me about the disconnect between them. Anyway, I’m just … grumpy about it. I felt like around S9 Sam and Cas were getting to a really good place, getting over some of their earlier hiccups, and then it just … I don’t know, sometimes it seems like Sam has a decent amount of familial affection but Cas is just like “Eh, Sam.” Or may be low-key resentful of him. Is it my imagination? Do you have any thoughts about it, or the Sam & Cas relationship/the show’s handling of it, in general? (That’s kind of a broad question, sorry). If it’s not something that’s interesting to you right now, though, definitely go ahead and ignore. I also had some strong feelings about the whole potential for MCD at the end - saw some disturbing stuff on the blogs as well as some of your tweets, though the interview you just reblogged is mildly reassuring? - and accidentally fell into another rant about MCD and SPN if you feel like some wank.
Anyway - stay cool (as a confirmed pansy who cannot handle anything over 24 C you have my deepest sympathies) and good luck with things! Thanks for your time <3
—-
Yay! SPN discussion time! I miss that.
I haven’t actually paid as much attention to the development of Sam and Cas’ relationship as I should have, I must admit that. I whole-heartedly agree with you about the scene in the tunnels. It made very little sense to me overall - why not have powerful/ harder to kill angels bring up the front and the rear? How did those angels (even though one of them was depowered) with their angelic senses not notice that the tunnels were full with approaching vampires? How were they so slow to react? Why didn’t Cas just go grab Sam, dead or not?
I think this was a case of trying to wrap character actions and reactions (and abilities) around a plot, instead of working the plot around the characters. They just wanted Lucifer to show up and heal Sam. It had no meaning and impact and could easily have been written in a way that didn’t make Cas look so incompetent and lacking empathy.
The Peace of Mind (is that the name?) episode was more enjoyable to me. And I didn’t read that Cas sharing things with Dean scene as having a particular negative impact on Sam. His reaction doesn’t really come across as all that negative in my mind. Though it’s true that Cas would not really understand why this wasn’t necessarily something he has to share with Dean. Though I don’t think it was particularly embarrassing for Sam in the grander scheme of things.
Sam and Cas clearly haven’t had the amount of development Dean and Cas enjoyed in the show. I don’t think Cas holds any resentment or cold feelings for Sam at all. I think he loves him deeply, but he’s not really all that good at expressing it any other way than to try to be useful, put them first and sacrifice for the Winchesters. But he seems to be happy to mimic any kind of affection Sam gives him (like, Sam taught him how to hug! And Cas seemed so happy to do it!) The issues is that we don’t really get any idea about Sam and Cas’ relationship. We get bits and pieces of info from the show that Dean and Cas have things they share and do together that go beyond hunting (like watching cowboy movies together). For Sam most of the interaction he has with Cas are case related or problem solving (Dean problems, often, more recently Jack related). They don’t seem to do a lot together beyond that.
And Sam didn’t mourn Cas the way Dean mourned him, neither did he really get any screen time devoted to showing him how glad he was that he’s back. Their relationship was totally side-lined. Which is why I was glad to see them on a case together, just to get a feel of where they’re at, when they’re not being overshadowed by the “more profound bond” (sorry, I had to bring this one up) between Dean and Cas. But then Sam spent a big part of the episode being under a spell. Hah... I feel I should rewatch the last couple of seasons, keeping an eye on Sam and Cas’ relationship.
The reason I mention Cas maybe being angry at Sam is mostly just because I - if I were Cas - would be angry at Sam’s involvement concerning Jack. Sam’s the one who’s more willing to forgive and he put all that effort and faith into Jack. And he didn’t think about calling Cas to talk about Jack and Dean’s plan to lock him up? Sam didn’t like it but he went along with it. He didn’t take Cas’ side for Jack (though he reacted sort of disapprovingly to Dean’s treatment of Cas). Maybe Cas wouldn’t be angry, more disappointed maybe?
And I’m up for any SPN related rants and wank. I have a lot of feelings and thoughts about many things. *lol*
i’m the anon who asked abt the teachertaem thing u recently posted n !!!! i would love if u wrote the thing abt how it’s a rumor n stuff !!! i wanna know how taem would try to handle the situation n stuff !!
The amount of students that had seen the videos of Taemin drunk-crying on his front lawn while also screaming at his fiance was ridiculously high. The amount of students who saw the video of him puking into the dead front porch plant was even higher than that.
The amount of his co-workers that had seen the videos, however, was just downright humiliating. They had all seen it. Some of them had been his own teachers when he was in high school.
Taemin was not having a good week.
He was bent over his coffee in the break room when one of the other teachers sat down next to him and told him to watch a video on his phone. Taemin barely lifted his eyelids, glanced at the phone, and saw himself from two nights ago. He knew exactly who had filmed it, it was the boy who lived next door to him, and Taemin felt sick to his stomach as he had to rewatch the fight he had with Jonghyun over the weekend.
“Just thought you should have a heads up before your students said anything,” his coworker told him.
Taemin let his head drop down onto the table, and he held the side of his coffee cup against his head. A couple other teachers sat down when they realized what was being talked about. When they started questioning him, he didn’t even bring his head up.
“I’m not an alcoholic,” he grumbled when someone mentioned it. “I’d had a bad day, that’s all.”
They kept questioning him, kept asking him things he didn’t want to answer, and it was embarrassing and annoying.
“We had a fight, I left and had a couple drinks, my brother drove me home, and then he fought with my fiance; it’s not that exciting and it’s really not anyone else’s business,” Taemin said.
“Well, a couple students have decided to make it everyone’s business,” someone told him.
“Are you and Jonghyun not going to be getting married?” someone else asked.
“We are getting married,” Taemin seethed. “We had a fight, it doesn’t mean we’re breaking up.”
Taemin ended up having to explain to too many people too many times about how yes, the fight was about the wedding, but no, that didn’t mean the wedding was no longer happening.
“I was throwing up because I wasn’t feeling well,” Taemin explained to one class when they asked him, and he tried to get them to start the lesson for the day, but another hand shot up in the air.
“It looked like you were throwing up because you were drunk,” one smart-ass said, not even having had his name called before he spoke. “Is that why another video said you were an alcoholic?”
“I am not an alcoholic,” Taemin said through gritted teeth. “Now please open your notebooks and we’ll start taking notes.”
When they all started whispering about the videos again, though, Taemin let his book fall loudly onto his desk.
“If I hear one more mutter about those videos, you’re all getting detention. So unless you want your entire class to hate you for getting everyone in trouble, keep your mouths shut and turn to the page we’re on,” Taemin said. “I’m not an alcoholic and I’m not calling off my wedding, so please listen to the lesson, because I guarantee you there will be no questions about my personal life on your next test. Which is on Thursday, if any of you forgot.”
It was a very long, long week, but reminding them all that they had a test at the end of the week kept most of their whispers about his love life outside of the classroom.
Kicking names and taking sass
At the peak of their interests for each other, Genji was asked by Angela to do one simple thing. What he does instead will lead to a chaotic evening in her lab filled with twists and turns that neither would expect.
A play of word of the phrase "kicking ass and taking names" except Genji doesn't get to take any ass action in this fic so I changed it to something more family friendly.
Fluff this time because I was reading the light novel for Re:Zero after rewatching the anime and I'm suffering.
Romance. Kinda suggestive. Mostly stupid stuff though.
In her many years of working, Angela Ziegler has had to deal with various amounts of annoyances and bothersome people in her line of work. From hopelessly confused patients and stubbornly ignorant people to wounded soldiers and cowering civilians without a hope left, she always kept calm and smiled at them as she found the best way to ease their worries and answer them to the best of her ability to a degree of success that got her to where she was today.
However, there was one adversary that she never thought would come. She thought that she had a sweet smile, an iron will, indomitable mental strength, a compassionate heart, and infinite patience all her life. It was what she needed to go on in her line of work, where everything can go so wrong and so quickly that not having any of those things would destroy her and everyone around her.
As it turned out, she only had close to infinite patience and a kind heart. It took only one person to make her realize this.
“Angela? Angelaaa. You’re listening aren’t you?”
She had insisted that he would call her Angela of course. At first, it was out of friendliness, though she quickly realized that his sense of tradition and formality would be hard to change. It was only very recently that she truly wanted to hear him say her name.
And yet.
“Would you like to go out for dinner later Angela?”
A frustrated shout came from her as Angela turned to frown and glare intently at Genji. “Why do you keep all pronouncing my name like that?”
Genji tilted his head innocently, “Like what?”
Angela continued to fume as she knew that he was just messing with her. There wasn’t a chance on Earth or even the moon that he has never heard anyone else call her by her first name. Which meant that he was definitely hiding a smile and that he was just messing with her despite how seriously she had wanted him to call her by her name.
“I mean pronouncing my name with a hard ‘g’ sound! You know how it sounds. It’s an-je-la, not an-ge-la.”
Genji, meanwhile, was busy scribbling something on the notepad he had. It was often used for his own amusement, either doodling or writing down silly things. She had yet to receive an answer about what the doodles and notes were but she did find them useful when she needed him to grab a list of items for her.
As she finished, Genji turned the notepad to her, presenting her with four katakana characters written neatly. “Like this?”
“Yes, ye- … Wait no! That is how you would write it but that’s not how it sounds! You know that!”
“Are you sure … But look-”
“Ugh, I’m done with you! What did I even see in you, stupid Jengi.”
Genji paused for a moment, not speaking as he took his time to comprehend what she had just said. It was hard for Angela to tell what he was thinking especially since she had made a point of turning her head away from him angrily. However, there were two important parts to what she said just then.
While one was definitely promising, there was definitely more relevant. Plus, he wasn’t sure whether he was ready to follow up on the other part just yet.
“Did you just-”
“Yes, Jengi? Were you saying something?”
He had never seen her being so childish and angry before. There were times when she was angry, of course, but they were always about something of great importance regarding her work, others’ lives, or morality. Never had it been about something so silly. And he would have never expected her to act this way back at him.
“Are you really going to do this?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Jengi. I’m busy with work here so can you please make your thoughts more clear or worthwhile?”
“We’ve been just chatting. You finished your work.”
“Sorry Jengi, science never stops. I just discovered another experiment begging for my attention. I most definitely have to attend to it right this instant.”
Genji smiled to himself as Angela continued to not look at him. After a moment of silence, he sighed and conceded, “Alright, alright I’m sorry, I won’t tease you anymore.”
“What was that Jengi? Sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the sound of how mad I am right now.”
She swiveled around expertly on her spinning chair, arms crossed over her chest as she glared at him. However, Angela was never one to hide her emotions overly well, at least not the positive ones. She can suppress her discomfort and worries to some extent for the morale of others but it was hard for her to pretend to feel something she was not. In this case, he knew that it would be a short matter of time before she broke out into a smile.
“I didn’t realize that your chair spinning skill level is correlated to your level of anger.”
Angela huffed proudly and smirked at him, a way to vent some of that smile she had been trying to hold back all this time.
“I’m a quick learner. Of course I would get it down. The timing was just convenient.”
“I wouldn’t say that toppling your chair seven times in a row is considered quick.”
“It was only six times. Everyone learns at a different pace alright?”
“Alright six. But still, how did you manage to fall out six times in a row? Children could spin on this without stopping and not even fall off while dizzy. You did it six times just trying to do a 180.”
Angela stomped her foot and stood up, hands on her hips as she stared down Genji who was still seated. She was never one to back down when she felt her cause was just. Her profession and gender had nothing to do with how menacing and intimidating she could be when she got serious.
And this was definitely a cause worth fighting for.
“Do you want to fight Mr. Shimada?”
Genji smirked and stood up, matching her height as he raised an eyebrow at her. “I know you’re a great doctor with proficient combat skills and a fine grasp on anatomy, especially when it’s my body. However, is that really a fight you want to take?”
Before Angela could reply, Genji leaned in close to her, not quite touching but making her eyes go wide and her thoughts lost for a moment. A perfect moment for his next words.
“With knowledge and skills like that, I’m sure you can figure out a better way to make me submit. Care to come by my dorm and settle this later tonight, Angela?~”
Angela fell back into her seat, her cheeks flushing as she gazed up at him. It was hard, incredibly hard, to try and hold her composure when he said her name like that. It flowed off his tongue so smoothly, as if he had practiced saying it for days. She doubted that the g was his trouble, it was the lack of the letter ‘l’ in the Japanese language. However, it sounded perfect, especially just now as he let her name flowed so smoothly off his tongue.
“Mmm…”
Without thinking, Angela let out a soft whimper in place of the silence that she had no idea how to deal with. Her brain was a mess and she had no way to express all the feelings that she felt. She liked him of course but he didn’t have to go so far. She just wanted to hear him call her by her name. How is it that she was invited to his room … She wasn’t ready to even confess yet and she knew that he thought of her as more than just a playboy conquest.
Even if he had sworn away his playboy days, it was at times like these that she was reminded that he used to be one. And a damn good one at that.
“What’s wrong Angela? I was just offering you a more suitable duel for your skills. Of course, we could spar normally as well but where’s the fun in that? When it comes to doing no harm, my suggestion surely fits that better.”
He leaned in close, right next to her ear now as he spoke is a breathy low tone.
“Besides, I’m sure you would enjoy that much more compared to what you do alone wouldn’t you, Angie~”
The blush went all the way up to her ears now as her lips quivered with her eyes darting away from his face, embarrassment peaking as he pushed her even further. Did this man not know the concept of mercy? He not only struck her unexpectedly by using her name, he went as far as to call her by a nickname and had the audacity to call her out about such a private thing …
“A-at least ask me out to dinner first, you jerk …”
Genji smirked and winked at her. “Ah, but I did remember? A while earlier I asked if you would like to go get dinner with me. Alas, I was painfully ignored.”
“... Ask me properly.”
Genji let out a mock sigh before taking her hand in his, eliciting Angela to hesitantly looked at his hand clasping over hers gently before trailing up to his soft eyes.
“Would you grant me the pleasure of taking you out to dinner this fine evening, Angela?”
Angela pouted and huffed gently, looking away as if she was still mad at him. However, it did not even last a second before she placed her other hand over his with a sweet smile.
“I would love to, Genji.”
The frown returned to Angela’s face once more, though it was far from being serious this time.
“As for your other proposal, I’ll … give it some consideration. I … can see that you were being considerate of my expertise but … Just, don’t get your hopes up or anything.”
Genji smiled and nodded, not letting go of her hand despite his proposal being accepted. If anything, he wanted to hold her hand forever. His flesh hand was in the middle between her two soft ones, meaning that it was in the best place he could want it.
Well, unless she did accept his other proposal. Then he might have to retract that thought just then. But of course, he shouldn’t get his hopes up or anything.
“... How did you know?”
Genji tilted his head as if questioning what she meant. Angela looked away, the frown shy and embarrassed as she asked again in a softer voice.
“How did you know about … what I do alone while thinking of you?”
If Genji’s jaw had not been half cybernetic, he would have needed the implant after his jaw dropped right then.
“I … Uhm, that was … I was just trying to tease you and made a bold move … There was no way I could have known I swear. I was starting to feel bad and was about to apologize actually, since I accused you of something so perverse.”
Angela pulled her hands back then turning her head to look back at him with horror on her face for revealing her own secret. She then turned this expression into a more suitable one laced with anger, though it was not extremely convincing.
“You tricked me! I can’t believe you!”
Genji raised his hands apologetically as he conceded to her accusations. “Old habits die hard. I was surprised I was right. Then again, you aren’t some young teenage girl. It’s not the worst thing in the world for someone else to find out. And besides,” he smiled, “I’m flattered that you think of me in so many different ways. I’ve always seen myself one-dimensionally yet here you are. As expected from the hardest woman I’ve ever tried to ask out for dinner I suppose.”
Angela frowned at him for a moment longer before looking down at her lap, the colors from her cheeks fading now as she contemplated the implications of his suggestions and the things that transpired today.
At last, she looked back up at Genji to give him a small smile as she raised a finger up between her soft lips to think. The finger came away every time she spoke in a cute manner that Genji never questioned, lest she ever thought to change the habit.
“What time?”
“How does seven sound?”
“How about eight instead?”
“I can arrange that. May I ask why?”
“I want to … prepare myself a bit better. And no, you’re not allowed to ask why.”
The soft pink hue on her cheeks at the pout she used to try and dissuade him from asking only made him smirk and want to tease her one last time.
“Ah, I see. Well, enjoy your extra hour alone then. Try not to wear yourself out before the night come. It’s no fun for you to accept my other offer if you’re worn out after all.”
Angela went into a full blush once more, moving her hand away from her lips indignantly even as Genji waved his hand in front of his face with a chuckle. With that, he began to walk out of the lab.
“Well, I do have a few things I should take care of and a nice dinner to reserve and prepare myself for.”
Angela nodded and turned her fist into a small wave, refusing to smile at him after what he just did to her.
“I’ll be seeing you then, Angela.”
With the sweet note of her name lingering just a moment on his tongue, Genji exited the room. And so, Angela found herself left with a warmth in her chest, a sweet sound in her mind, and a date to prepare for.
All in a day at the lab, kicking names about, taking no sass, and doing no harm.
So I’ve been rewatching the Scream movies recently (because hello that’s my favorite movie series so) and I really just wanted to write this so?
This particular ficlet is obviously inspired by Scream 3 and I pretty much wrote this just for myself and my own entertainment but I would also like to write more so?
Honestly, it hadn’t been a surprise to see Ophelia on the news. She hadn’t exactly been a recluse since what happened to them three years ago…That Night. Fitz has no idea how she does it, how she talks about it and handles the questions and the stares and-
In truth, he’s done everything he possibly can to forget about That Night and to ensure that whenever people look at him on the subway or in the grocery store, they just see a perfectly ordinary person, unremarkable aside from his accent.
But Ophelia has never been like that.
It used to make him angry, frustrated with her. At least she’d finally stopped trying to contact him, stopped trying to get him to sit by her side during interviews and be an accessory to her story. The Final Girl and the Other Survivor. There was no special name, Fitz had discovered, for an awkward teenage boy who had survived a massacre.
So, no, it hadn’t been a surprise to turn on the news and see Ophelia there on the screen. She’s been on the news before, countless times. He’s seen her on his television; it’s the only way he can keep up with her, adjust his memory of her in his mind. Otherwise he figures she might be as she was three years ago: sixteen and losing color in her cheeks, her hands and clothes and skin bloody.
It had been a surprise to see the story that Ophelia was attached to. The murder of the police officer who had been instrumental in their survival That Night, one of the people lumped into the story that has defined Fitz’s life.
“Do you think you’re in danger?” One of the reporters had asked Ophelia while practically accosting her on her way to her car hours before.
Ophelia had looked in the camera, had said, “Of course not” without her usual swagger and charm. She had smiled but Fitz had watched the footage over and over again, an embarrassing amount of times, certain that he had seen in her eyes: the doubt, the uncertainty.
A part of him has always felt the same way: doubtful of his own fate. That Night was over, of course, had been for years. But sometimes he felt like it wasn’t quite done with him.
And now here he was, the idiot standing outside the studio currently shooting his life story, being denied energy.
“I can’t let you in,” the guard says, bored and disinterested, not looking at him.
Or the ID Fitz is trying to shove under his nose, his annoyance growing in tandem with his feeling of stupidity. “My name is Leo Fitz,” he says for the fourth time, “I’m-”
“You think you’re the first guy to say that?” The guard asks.
Fitz waggles the wallet. “My driver’s license isn’t enough to-”
To add to his embarrassment, Ophelia picks that exact moment to appear.
He’d known she would be here, of course, which was the whole reason he was here. He’d known she was acting as a consultant on the movie, that she’s accepted the same offer he’d turn down a few months before. But even still, seeing here suddenly in front of him, no screen or pixelated images between them, catches Fitz by surprise.
“Leopold,” Ophelia says, surprise in her voice, a Starbucks drink in her hand, disbelief on her face. She pushes her sunglasses up and Fitz gets the full picture of her face: more beautiful than she’d been That Night and any other time he’d seen her in the school hallways before. The last time he’d seen her in person, she had been beautiful of course. Flushed and breathless, her nails pressing into his shoulders and-
Fitz blinks the memory away, focuses on her instead. “Ophelia,” he manages to say her name without stuttering over the syllables. “I…I was just…”
Now the guy at the gate looks up, interest renewed.
“What are you doing here?” Ophelia questions, though she doesn’t look displeased. “I called you a few months ago…you didn’t return my calls.”
An accusation? An observation? Either way, Fitz drops his gaze. “I…I was just…” He looks up at, trying to ignore the attention of the guard. “I wanted to check on you.”
Ophelia smiles softly, tilting her head slightly. “You’re sweet,” she says and she reaches out, putting a hand on his elbow. “Come on, we can talk inside.”
Fitz follows her, feeling smug about leaving behind the guard. His smug feeling fades away quickly when he sees the set built up around them, all the houses and streets that look so familiar, that he can’t forget despite his best efforts.
He can’t help but look around, even though there’s a part of him that can’t stand the sight of all of it, how they’ve managed to recreate That Night so perfectly. Ophelia doesn’t seem to notice at all, sipping her coffee and saying something he can’t hear through the buzz in his ears.
“You heard about what happened to Officer-” Ophelia is saying when Fitz turns his head back in her direction.
“How do you do it?” Fitz questions, his voice sharp even to his own ears.
Ophelia looks surprised. “Do what?”
“This.” Fitz jabs a finger at the structure of her shoulder, a recreation of the house he nearly…of The House. “How do you do this?”
Ophelia looks almost amused by his question, which doesn’t help the way the skin prickles the back of his neck, the way he suddenly feels hot and like all of this was a terrible idea. “It’s just a movie, Leopold,” Ophelia tells him. “And they were going to make it anyway, so I figured I might as well-”
“Make money off it,” Fitz supplies for her.
Now he can see a change in emotion in her. Finally. A crack in the veneer, a fire in her eyes. “No,” Ophelia says sharply. “Make sure they get it right.”
“But you are, aren’t you?” Fitz presses, unsure of why this is suddenly so important. Why it’s easier to look at her like this, to accuse her of this thing, rather than tell her that he came here because he was worried about her, because he wants to know what she thinks about the sudden death of the other living person connected to That Night. That he wanted to check on her, to ensure that she was all right. “Making money, right?” He continues. “Off the book. The interviews. The movie.”
Ophelia swallows, her jaw tightening. She lifts her chin slightly, her posture haughty and defensive. “I know how you feel about me, Leopold,” she tells him sharply. “Is that why you came? To make sure I hadn’t forgotten?”
Fitz opens his mouth, manages to swallow the retort that threatens to slip free. More accusations, he thinks. He sighs, forcing down the impulse. “No,” he tells her, forcing the word free. “No, that’s not what I…I wanted to see if you were okay.”
He can tell all too quickly that he’s too late, that he’s already lost his chance. Ophelia is watching him through narrowed eyes, closed off and cold. Not like she was that night, the last time he saw her in person. She had kissed him first, though he’d been desperate to do it all night and even before then, if he was truly being honest. He’d met her gaze as they pulled away, his eyes locking with hers and he felt like he’d seen her, truly. Had seen a part of himself reflected back, someone who understood him. Someone he could so easily-
She isn’t looking at him like that now.
“I’m fine,” Ophelia says shortly. “Completely fine.”
“I just thought, with Officer Coulson,” Fitz continues, suddenly desperate to redo the last few minutes, to start over. “With what happened-”
Ophelia interrupts him quickly. “I’m fine,” she says again. “Unlike some people, I’m able to put what happened that night behind me. I’m not thinking about it constantly.”
Ophelia quickens her pace then, leaves him standing there, staring after her. Fitz thinks about calling out, apologizing, begging her to talk to him. He doesn’t, because he never does. Instead, he just watches as she disappears into the set that looks like the house, the one where she’d saved his life and her own.
Fitz thinks about following after her but finds he can’t move his feet.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
There’s a knock on his door and, as always, Fitz thinks about not answering it. He has the most expensive security system he could find, his own always close by in case in needs to dial three numbers and hit send. But still, hesitates, uncertain. His neighbors have figured out by now not to bother him unless it’s absolutely necessary.
Fitz wavers, his hand on the door knob. Finally, he looks out the peephole, exhaling in a sudden rush of relief.
Ophelia is standing the porch. She swallows when she looks at him and her eyes look more like they did that last time: open and uncertain, hopeful, asking him something he hasn’t figured out yet. “Can I come in?”
Fitz nods dumbly, standing aside to let Ophelia step into his living room.
Ophelia looks around, her hands tight on the strap of her purse, her lip captured between her teeth. Fitz wonders what she sees: the small townhouse of a young, single guy who is afraid of pretty much everything outside his front door. His TV is playing an episode of Star Trek, a takeout container on the coffee table. They both seem to look at it at the same time.
Fitz clears his throat and asks, “Do you want something to eat? There’s plenty.” It seems like the perfect entry into conversation.
Ophelia shakes her head. And then, “Do you have any wine?”
Fitz heads into the kitchen and Ophelia trails after him. He gets the glasses out of the cabinet, finds a bottle in the fridge: half empty but hey there’s still wine in it so he figures that’s what counts.
“So,” Fitz says as he hands Ophelia her glass, “who do I have to thank for this visit?”
Ophelia sighs slightly, crinkling her brow. “Sorry about earlier,” she says quietly and this time she’s the one leading the way through the small place, back into the living room. She sits on the couch, looking completely at home there with her feet tucked underneath her and a glass of wine in her hands.
Fitz switches off the TV, sitting on the opposite side, studying her. “I’m sorry too,” he tells her quickly. “I didn’t mean to…seeing that place…” Ophelia starts to respond and he beats her to it: “You know what I mean.”
“I know,” Ophelia says with a nod. “I…I keep thinking we might just suddenly click together and see eye-to-eye on things and just…” She waves her hand. “I don’t know. Connect.”
Swallowing, Fitz nods, watching her. “I…” He wants to apologize, swallows down the impulse. “What did you mean earlier?” He asks instead. “When you said you knew how I felt about you?”
Ophelia sighs, studying the glass in her hands. She rolls it between her palms, fixated on the red wine that sloshes against the sides. “You think I’m terrible,” she says, “for writing about what happened. And the book. And now all this with the movie.”
Fitz shakes his head. “I don’t think you’re terrible, Ophelia.”
She looks up at him, her eyes seeming to burn a hole into him. “You left me,” she tells him, “the night we were together. We had sex and then you left me. And you didn’t return my calls after that. What am I supposed to think, Leopold?”
How is he supposed to answer that? How can he explain? He loves her, he’s certain that he does. He’s certain he always has, first in the way a teenage boy loves a girl he knows will be forever out of his reach. And then later, in a stronger and more indestructible way, in a forged by fire type way. He loved her because he could understand her and she could understand him and that had meant everything.
It still does, he thinks.
And, of course, he had loved her that night, in the way he’d always wanted to: real and sincere and brand new in that moment.
But also, there’s the part of him that can’t stand to look at her, to be close to her. The part of him that looks at her and…remembers.
Fitz doesn’t know how to say any of that.
Isn’t sure he can.
He only shakes his head. “I’m sorry,” he says finally. “I…I never meant…I shouldn’t have…I don’t think you’re terrible.” He says this last part quieter, almost an afterthought.
Ophelia studies him for a moment and seems satisfied with whatever she’s ascertained about him. She puts her wine glass aside, reaches into her purse and pulls out a folded piece of paper.
An envelope, Fitz realizes, as he takes it from Ophelia.
“I got that a week ago,” Ophelia tells him. “Before Officer Coulson was murdered.”
Fitz unfolds it, pulling out the letter inside.
Typed words on a piece of paper. It ends with you.
He looks up at Ophelia. “Have you shown this to anyone else?”
Ophelia scoffs. “What should I show them?” She asks, arching an eyebrow. “A piece of paper with a vague threat that isn’t even a threat? Of course not. They’ll think I’m crazy.” She pauses, considering him. “I thought you might understand.”
He does, of course. He can feel the threat from the words, even if no one else could. He can practically smell it wafting off the paper, impossible to ignore. The intentions of the person who sent this to Ophelia.
The implications.
Not just for her but for him as well.
“I’m not okay,” Ophelia tells him tremulously, an answer to his question from earlier. “I don’t think I’m okay.”
Fitz puts aside the letter, feels brave enough to reach for her hand. She wraps her fingers around his instantly, desperately. He tries to smile, isn’t sure he does a successful job. “Don’t worry,” he tells Ophelia, searching her eyes like he did That Night and the ones that came after. “We’ll figure it out.”
What he means is: I’ll keep you safe.
He means: I won’t let anything happen to you again.
He means: I’m sorry I left that night when all I wanted to do was stay there forever.
He means: We’ll get through this together.
Of course, Fitz doesn’t say any of those things.
So I really really really love podcast and I thought I would make this masterpost of podcast recommendations!! There’s a little bit of everything, and I’ve organised it all, so I’m sure you’ll find something you’ll like! I mention possible content warnings, episode lengths and amounts, good places to start, etc. I will update this post as I find more podcasts! Enjoy~
Fictional Podcasts
Limetown: 6 episodes, 30-40 min each. Crime Investigation of a town whose residents all mysteriously disappeared one night. Has sci-fi elements. Possible content warning for animal abuse/testing in episode 3, and deaths throughout. End of episode 2 is also potentially disturbing.
[Website] [Soundcloud] and in iTunes store.
The Message: 8 episodes, ~15 min each with a 30 min finale. A message from space needs to be translated, and our main character Nicky is podcasting the whole time. Obviously very sci-fi. Diverse cast, including a non-binary person! It’s pretty intense, and because the narrator talks directly to you which includes warnings it could be a little distressing but it’s 100% fictional. Content warning for hospital situations and characters on their deathbeds.
[Website] and in iTunes store.
Life After: 10 episodes, ~30 mins each. This is made by the same team as The Message. Ross works for the FBI, and has lost his wife recently. He’s obsessed with listening to audioposts that she made on a audio-social media site. Content warning for cults and hacking.
Available in iTunes store.
Steal the Stars: Currently airing, as of Aug 2017 they have 4 episodes out. It’s about government officials who are guarding and studying an alien who crash landed on earth years ago. There’s also a love story.
[Website] and available in iTunes store.
The Truth: Every episode is different! Often very dark, but some are more light hearted. Very very visual. My favourites include Starbursts, The One about the Dead Dog, and It’s Your Funeral (Pt1 & Pt 2).
[Website] [Soundcloud] and in iTunes store.
D&D Podcasts
Okay just hear me out before you scroll past this section. I have never played dungeons and dragons in my life, I’m not even a fan of fantasy. But I really love these podcasts. It takes time to understand the rules, but it’s so worth it. The stories told are so original cuz everything can change by the role of a dice, and the characters have free will and don’t have to listen to the narrator. The people in these podcasts are so passionate too. But if you are sure that it’s not your cup of tea then you can move on now.
The Adventure Zone: 3 brothers play D&D with their dad. They’ve just finished their first Campaign as of Aug 2017, so you’ll have a completed story if you start now. There’s 69 episodes, each around an hour or so long, so it’s a lot of content to get through. They’re goofy as all hell. It takes some time to recognise the voices if you don’t know the McElroy brothers (they make other podcasts I mention later). Merle is a dwarf cleric (essentially a priest), Magnus is a human fighter, and Taako is an elven wizard. The Dungeon Master (DM, person who tells the story of the world and plays all the non-main characters) is super talented, lots of great voices. The fantasy in this is very non-traditional, so not like medieval britain, so there’s things like trains and space travel and a costco. Hilarious, very original, and emotional. Also the music is sooo good here’s the soundcloud for just the music. also there’s a pretty active fandom if that’s important to you.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Sneak Attack!: 4 player game with 5 friends (including a married couple). As of Aug 2017 they have over 100 episodes, and bonus eps, all about an hour long. Sherwood is a gnome druid (basically a forest wizard) who is antisocial to everyone but animals and plants. Greaek is a dwarf fighter who introduces himself to everyone he meets he’s a good boy. Brenna is a half-elf bard (musician) who plays the banjo and bagpipes and gets into lots of arguments with Greaek, who is her irl husband. She’s the voice of reason in the group. Akio is a human wizard who dreams of owning a noodle shop, and owns a chicken named Alfredo. Also he’s a necromancer. The DM is amazing, and the whole group is just really nice and wholesome?
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Science & Culture
Radiolab: Beautifully edited, usually about science/tech but mostly about telling a good story. Most episodes are about 40 mins to an hour, and there’s also shorter mini episodes. Good episodes to start with is Colors, Laughter, and Escape!. My favourites include What’s Up, Doc?, The Living Room (content warning for death and illness), Debateable, On the Edge, and Cities.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Reply All: Podcast about “the internet”, but it’s much more than that. Their content is all over the place. Episodes are typically 35 mins long, with the occasional longer ep. This is a podcast I would start from the beginning to get used to the format. Today’s The Day and Hello? are two of my favourite audio pieces ever, they make me so emotional, but I don’t think you’ll get this feeling unless you’ve listened to their ‘normal’ podcasts and gotten to know the hosts. This podcast is very good about content warnings for episodes, both at the start and when they’re about to discuss the content.
[Website] [Soundcloud] and in iTunes Store.
Flash Forward: Used to be called Meanwhile in the Future. Each episode focuses on a possible or not-so-possible future, first starting with a dramatisation of what that future would be like (usually news report kinda stuff), and then an in depth discussion with real experts about how possible that future is. In the first season the episodes were about 15 mins but now they’re up to 40 mins long. A good place to start with would be from the start! All the episodes are great in my opinion, but for examples of the range of topics discussed, you can try Sunward Bound and Don’t Lie to Me.
[Website] [Soundcloud] and in iTunes Store.
Imaginary Worlds: About fictional universes and our relationship to them. Episodes usually between 20-30 mins, and often topical to a recent event. My favourites are The Year Without a Summer (about Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein, and volcanoes), Rolling the Twenty Sided Dice (about D&D, would highly recommend if you are unsure about the aforementioned D&D podcast), and In Defence of Captain Hook (about Peter Pan, the last 5 mins of this podcast is amazing).
[Website] [Soundcloud] and in iTunes Store.
Invisibilia: This podcast is about human behaviour/psychology. Episodes are an hour long. I would recommend The Personality Myth to start (but also starting at episode 1 is good). They are usually good about content warning but obviously they often talk about mental health so do with that what you want. As of August 2017 they have just finished their 3rd season.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
This American Life: The most annoying thing about this podcast is there’s only ever the last 4 episodes they’ve aired available at a time, but you can “save” the episode you like on iTunes. It’s about american culture and stories and stuff, sometimes a little hit or miss for me but I’m also not American but there’s still a lot of great episodes. The episode that just came out in August 2017 “We are in the Future is Amazing, about afrofuturism.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Sawbones: This podcast describes itself as “a marital tour of misguided medicine”. Dr. Sydnee and Justin (not a Dr.) McElroy talk about the history of medicine and all the weird stuff we did in the past to try to cure people. Sydnee has the most knowledge in this pair and Justin is mostly there to ask questions and make jokes. Very fun tone throughout usually but obviously they take time to talk about more serious stuff. My favourite thing about it is just how much this couple love each other.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Oh No Ross and Carrie: Two friends go out to investigate fringe-science stuff so you don’t have to. They have joined cults including Scientology, have their pets get psychic readings, and try juice cleanses and soylent. I’d recommend any episode that covers something that you’re interested in! Episodes are typically 40-60 mins.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Comedy
My Brother My Brother and Me (MBMBAM): The same 3 brothers from the Adventure Zone. Justin, Travis, and Griffin have been making this podcast since 2010 and they give “advice” but mostly just laugh at their own jokes. They answer a lot of Yahoo questions, you know the type. Here’s a taster for their type of humor. They also have a new TV show, and the first episode is available for free, which can help you put a face to the name/voice. They’re never rude or mean but can be very dirty boys so don’t listen w/out headphones. Also probably in public with headphones cuz u will laugh out loud for SURE.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Dynamic Banter: Two dudes talk who also mostly just laugh at their own jokes. They like movies a lot. Here’s a 8 min clip where they talk about alternate titles for Tom Hanks’s classic film Big. Episodes are usually about an hour long.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
It Feels Like the First Time: Three guys are watching Lost, the 2004-2010 TV show about people who crashes on a ~weird island~. If were planning to watch/rewatch Lost and want to listen to more than 1 hour of three guys making jokes about the show then you should listen to this podcast. As of August 2017 they’re halfway through the final season, so there’s plenty of content for you to catch up on. This podcast comes out weekly and talk about 2 episodes of the show at a time.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
The Mortified Podcast: People read their childhood/teenage diaries outloud in front of a crowd. It’s embarrassing and cringe-y and hilarious and relatable and will make you more empathetic to your younger self and the kids and teens in your life because it’s hard out there. Episodes are about 25-35 mins long, usually featuring 2 different diary reads on a similar topic, like Prom or Summer Vacation.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Miscellaneous
Terrible, Thanks for Asking: Nora McInerny is the host of this podcast. It’s about how terrible things are sometimes in life. Nora and guests just talk about the horrible things that have happened to them, like death of loved ones, abuse, mental illness, etc. Obviously, it’s not a casual, feel good listen, it is not for everyone and I would advise some people to not listen to this ever, but it’s emotional and raw and important. Nancy: This is a relatively new podcast, as of August 2017 there are 19 episodes. It’s about the LGBTQ+ community and issues, hosted by Kathy Tu and Tobin Low. The first episode, for example, is about Kathy’s coming out story, and how she needs to constantly come out to her mother who isn’t listening to her. These two hosts are really fun, and so are their guests, and i’m sure that LGBTQ+ listeners will relate to their conversations.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Strangers: Podcast host Lea Thau tells stories about strangers. Or at least they’re strangers to you. It’s not as depressing as “Terrible Thanks for Asking”... usually. Episodes are anywhere between 20 and 50 minutes. Her “Love Hurts” series might be a good place to start, although it isn’t her typical episode structure, but it’s all about her interviewing exes about why they didn’t work out. This podcast is usually good about content warnings.
[Website] [Soundcloud] and in iTunes Store.
Mystery Show: Podcast host Starlee Kine solves weird mysteries like what is Jake Gyllenhaal’s real height, or a video rental store that disappeared in 1 day, or the owner of a really really cool belt buckle found on the ground years ago. There’s only 6 episodes, and there won’t be more. They’re between 25 and 70 minutes long.
[Website] and in iTunes Store.
Harry Potter and the Sacred Text: The tagline for this is “What if we read the books we love as if they were sacred texts?”. Hosts Vanessa Zoltan and Casper ter Kuile discuss one chapter of Harry Potter per episode, and analyse it using techniques usually reserved for religious texts. The hosts are Religious and Divinity scholars. Episodes are half an hour long, and as of June 2017 they are about halfway through the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Diakko things I missed or liked: Episode 2
I decided to slowly rewatch the series and log all the things I felt important! Mostly Akko and Diana things, but maybe some other stuff too!
Navigation: Episode 1
So I finally got to rewatch episode 2! I had forgotten this episode was so early in the series, and while I could have probably remembered the gist of the story, I definitely had forgotten some of the finer details. Now that I’ve seen it again, I’m really starting to doubt myself now. How could I miss such a strong opening episode for Akko and Diana’s relationship?
I haven’t watched episode 21 yet, and this post is free from spoilers past episode 2.
Akko doesn’t notice Diana until lunch time. Until that point we can see Diana being the kind of girl I remember her as. She makes no hesitation to correct someone if they are wrong, and doesn’t mind bringing attention to herself and her intelligence. Diana no doubt has a huge amount of confidence in her abilities, which in my mind is pretty respectable. That said, her sidekicks Barbara and Hannah are something else.
Meanwhile Akko is already bored and venting her frustrations at lunch.
Diana giving Akko a hard time about Chariot. Meanwhile Akko has already unknowingly become the target of Sucy’s pranks and is starting to grow.
This is a really interesting scene, especially given that Diana is/was a major fan of Chariot. I of course missed that my first time watching episode 1, so this is kind of a recent revelation to me (and I only knew about it otherwise because of episode 19). Anyways, this is the first time Akko and Diana introduce themselves to each other and it’s kind of precious in its own way. Also, even though Akko was dozing in class, she remembers that Diana was the one standing up and being smart. Kind of a nice touch!
Akko introduces herself very casually, and Diana very formally. It’s kind of fitting given their personalities. Diana’s sidekicks let Akko know Diana is famous and the best witch at Luna Nova. Diana’s conversation here, which is about how Chariot is no longer recognized as she once was, strikes a pretty big contrast with the younger Diana we know.
Without going out on too much of a limb though, it’s easy to see that Diana hasn’t lost her interest in Chariot. As soon as Akko mentions the Shiny Rod, Diana is all ears! Meanwhile Barbara and Hannah are concerned, perhaps terrified? Perhaps that Diana is wrong...?
Diana is very interested in the Shiny Rod, everyone is in fact, but importantly Diana clearly doesn’t feel compelled to believe it’s the real thing. Akko goes to great lengths to prove to Diana otherwise, but fails and makes a fool of herself.
And now I can finally talk about the important part!
Up until this point, the strong impression of Diana’s character has been created not from what Diana has done, but what Barbara and Hannah have done. At every chance Barbara and Hannah butt in to make snide remarks. It reflects back negatively on Diana, and leaves a ‘harder’ impression of who Diana is. Anyways I don’t think Akko is very deterred just the same.
Diana is certainly a little full of herself this episode, but in my mind it amounts to self esteem. She comes across as someone that clearly knows what she’s doing. What is more hidden in the pages, in my opinion, is that Diana’s ‘believing heart’ isn’t what it once was. She is extremely skeptical of the Shiny Rod and Akko. But this didn’t stop her from following Akko to the schoolyard, and while her words for Akko over lunch weren’t the nicest things to say, I don’t think she intended to actually hurt Akko’s feelings.
Instead of intending to be cruel to Akko, I’d say Diana felt a glimmer of hope here. It started to come out of her closely guarded box in the cafeteria, and Diana shut it away. It poked out again when Akko mentioned the Shiny Rod, and the glimmer reappeared. Diana had to put herself at ease, and so took up Akko’s offer to show her the Shiny Rod... but even then she couldn’t believe it when she saw it. When Akko failed to do anything with the Rod, that glimmer faded back into its treasure box.
After trying to hard to move the statue, Akko is pretty disheartened. Diana casts a real spell to move the statue. The scene has dramatic music, and the statue advances on Akko. It would be a pretty scary scene if it wasn’t Diana and Akko, but it was them and rather it ended up being quite the opposite of scary.
Removing the plant. It had actually grown several new leaves!
Diana, in her own way, showed Akko some affection here. It was masked as something frightening, but really this was Diana showing off and showing, at least discretely, she cared about Akko enough to remove the plant growing on her head.
Why a plant? I have a feeling this has something to do with calling a person ‘green’, in reference to a person that is new to something, which in this case is Akko and magic. It’s fitting that Diana would be the one to help push Akko through her naive days, both symbolically and in actuality.
Of course, Akko is totally surprised by the turn of events. She makes an adorable sound of confusion, followed soon by a mild chastisement from Diana to study more (which Akko probably deserved).
Barbara and Hannah again make it clear that Diana is of an ancient magic heritage. Diana tellingly says nothing and dismissively turns around to walk away. She has an air of superiority still, and perhaps she’s upset that that glimmer of hope she might have had is gone.
A really beautiful thing about this episode is that it’s all a setup for Diana to be challenged, briefly validated, and then subsequently turned upside down by Akko. Furthermore, it’s Diana that catalyses this change, having been drawn in by Akko’s emotional attachment to Shiny Chariot.
Diana thinks she knows the answer.
Inadvertently, Diana causes the butterflies to mature. Akko comes rushing in to find her in the thick of trouble.
Diana, being Diana, is trying to be smart. In any regular circumstance, this might have worked in her favor. But nothing is regular with Akko around. And while the details of the scene are pretty clear, I want to gush about what actually happened between Akko and Diana.
Diana’s confidence in her knowledge versus Akko’s believing heart. There’s nothing to really indicate that these chrysalises are the same butterflies as that on her Shiny Chariot cards, but Akko believes it anyways. Actually, this is a good example of Akko applying her knowledge and perhaps Diana becoming frustrated that her healing spell ‘failed’. But it took more than that to snap Diana out of her temperament. Diana had to hit Akko with a destructive magic spell first.
Fluttering before her eyes are fragments of Akko’s believing heart. Of the believing heart she locked away.
Crumpling before her on the ground is Akko. Akko, the one that challenged her modality of traditions and intelligence. The one that dared her to open her believing heart once more.
It hit Diana very suddenly as a multitude of things.
Akko wasn’t the person she thought she was. Akko was someone that genuinely cared, someone that acted emotionally but also selflessly.
Akko was telling the truth. Perhaps Diana didn’t want to accept that Akko was right about the Shiny Rod. Maybe Diana didn’t want to accept that Akko was the wielder. It didn’t matter why.
Diana’s understanding of Akko had to change.
Akko and Diana, both equally awestruck. Their first scene so close to each other!
Diana, forgetting herself for a small while, helps Akko incite the spell to release the butterflies.
It’s so early in the series, but we are treated to a great Akko and Diana moment. Diana is shaken to her foundations and can see Akko’s true self. This is only the beginning, but it is such a strong introduction to this great pair that it’s been difficult to summarize well. A lot of what this episode entails is character development, and fortunately for Diakko fans there is a lot of interpersonal development too. We really get a feel for the limits of Diana’s confidence, and the ability for Akko to astonish her.
What started as a mutual but guarded interest in Chariot turned into something so much more.
Akko embarrassing herself in front of others, only for that embarrassment to be obscured with a kind gesture.
Diana failing to cure the tree and and finding herself frustrated, only to have her temperament incidentally whisked away by Akko in a truly selfless act.
Together making mistakes yet catalyzing change; in a burst of hope the metamorphosis of Diana; the awakening of her believing heart.
Green Eyed Monster: Daehyun
Hey y’all here is another request that I was suppose to do a while ago! Sorry for being such a slow sloth! (Too lazy to type anymore…fingers hurt TT_TT) Thanks Nonnie for your patience and I hope you like the scenario!
Hi!! Can I get a scenario of a super jealous Daehyun because I baby Junhong sooooo much but me and daehyun are not together however we end up together since we like each other a lot but are afraid to confess first? (Don’t know if this even makes sense lmao)
A/N: Why he so beautiful *o*
You squealed as you held the giant maknae close to your chest. Unknowingly burying the poor boy’s face into your boobs. Though he didn’t mind too much. He was a man afterall. You stared at the screen as you rewatched B.A.P’s cover of Mirotic on MBC. You still couldn’t believe how sexy the boys looked, but you couldn’t help but explode with giddiness at the sight of Zelo being cute yet sexy. It was paradoxical. “Yah, Junhongie! How can you be so precious, but sexy at the same time!?” You unburied his face and decided to pinch the boy’s cheeks instead.
“Cause I’m that amazing.” He playfully squished his cheeks and did a cheesy smile. You wanted to squeal again. Seriously how can this over 6 ft tall giant be so adorable! You loved all the boys to death, but Zelo was special in that he was your cutie baby. You knew Zelo back when he was still a trainee as mini you was shadowing your producer older brother. He had become something like a younger brother to you as you watched him grow and develop his craft so he got special doting.
To most the scene between the two of you was cute and endearing. Except to one man that was sitting at the other end of couch with a glare on his face at the scene. Daehyun wasn’t too happy to see how clingy the two of you were. He never liked it actually. He knew that the two of you were close and Zelo was your giant baby chick so the skinship and closeness wasn’t all to surprising. It only started to bother him when he started grow feelings for you. When he first met you he was shocked to find out you were going to be the producer for B.A.P’s next album. You were so young yet already so talented. And not to mention beautiful. But beyond that you were kind, funny, sassy, and ambitious. At the time Daehyun wanted to hug the maknae and even kiss the kid on the cheek for being so close with you because that meant that you would hang out with the gang outside of the work environment, but now all Daehyun wanted to do was glare a hole into the poor maknae’s head.
“Aish…” Daehyun let out a sigh as he got up from the couch and headed towards the kitchen. Your eyes followed Daehyun at the sound of his sigh, your eyebrows furrowed in confusion at his sudden sullen mood.
Recently you had noticed that Daehyun’s mood tended to sour more frequently and it always occurred when you were around. A small part of you prayed and hoped that maybe he was just having bad day and you just happened to be there. You didn’t want to think or even play with the thought that Daehyun may despise you. Especially when you had a major crush on the boy. You didn’t know when it had developed, if anything you thought you would have fallen for Zelo with how much time you spend time with him, but they did. Maybe it was Daehyun’s infectious laughter, his love and care for his members and fans, that endearing nature of his to always keep those he loves close to his heart. How much cares and is passionate about his music and others, yet at the same time can be such a dork that you didn’t understand how it could be the same person. You didn’t know which part did it for you, but it did. And you fell hard.
“Um I’m going to grab a bottle of water. Do you want anything Junhong?” You removed yourself from the couch and cautiously went towards the kitchen.
“Yes please!” Zelo shouted as he turned his attention back to the other performances.
As you entered the kitchen you saw that a certain grumpy pants was blocking the door of the refrigerator, chugging down a bottle of water like an elephant. “Hey Dae, can you move a bit so I grab some water?”
Daehyun eyed you before he opened the fridge once more, not speaking a word. That concerned you. Daehyun never stopped talking. Sometimes you had to throw pillows at him and Youngjae just to get the two chatterboxes to shut up for 5 minutes. You were about to open your mouth to ask if he was okay. Though a small of part of you feared that the reason he was feeling crummy was because of you. You weren’t wrong, but the reasons weren’t the ones you were thinking of. Daehyun began chugging down all the water bottles he could, making sure you wouldn’t have enough to give Zelo.
“Yah! What the hell Dae!?” You stared at him dumbfounded at his actions. Daehyun simply turned to glare at you, cheeks puffed out full of water. “Pffft, you look so cute!” You couldn’t help but giggle at the sight. He looked like a pouty chipmunk!
At your comment and laughter, Daehyun’s eyes soften as he gulped down the water, but he still wasn’t going let up and give you a bottle of water for you and Zelo. “Sorry, Y/N but it seems like we ran out of water.” You rolled your eyes at the silly, cute fool.
“And whose fault is that?” You put your hands on your hips, eyebrows raised. Daehyun shrugged innocently, causing you to scoff. “Junhongie~ there aren’t any cold water bottles left do you want something else?”
“Hot chocolate sounds great!~” Zelo called from the living room, his eyes fixated on this new dance show that he discovered.
“Okay!” You began to step towards the fridge when a certain Busan obstruction was in the way. “Yah, Dae, I need to go grab the milk.” You slightly whined.
Daehyun didn’t reply and rapidly grabbed the carton of milk from the fridge, causing you to stare at him like a madman. Had he gone completely insane!? He began opening the container, but you lunged at him before his beautiful lips could touch the opening. “Hey Y/N! Stop it! You’re going to make me spill!”
“You stop it! Like what the heck!? Do you plan to eat the entire fridge!?” You began clawing at the carton that Daehyun put high in the air. You weren’t a shortie, but you were definitely shorter than Daehyun. “Ack! Daehyun I swear to God I’m going to dead leg you!”
“I’m a growing boy, Y/N. I need milk!” He countered as one had was raised high in the air, while the other hand held onto your arm to keep his balance.
“Uhgggg! That’s it!” You let out a frustrated groan as you latched onto Daehyun’s arm. “Junhong! It seems like we ran out of chocolate syrup! Daehyun and I are going to go to the market to get some.”
“Wait, we don’t need choco-” You glared at Daehyun to shut up.
“Do you need me to come Y/N?” Zelo called as began shuffling off the couch.
“No, no, we’ve got this!” You kept your tone as pleasant as possible hiding the irritation and frustration that was boiling in you. You dragged Daehyun outside of the dorm, pulling him down the hall to the small patio of their dorm building. “Okay, Dae, what the hell is your problem!?”
“I don’t have a problem.” Daehyun grumbled as he crossed his arms across his chest.
“Oh yes you do!” You let out an exasperated groan, running your hand down your face. “For the past few days you’ve been irritated and grumpy every time you see me. Like if you didn’t like me then just tell me so!” You really hoped. Prayed that that wasn’t the reason for his sour mood, but if it was you would rather have him tell you outright then play this stupid game.
Daehyun’s eyes soften at your words and he slowly let his arms fall to his sides. You looked so angry, frustrated, and tired. He didn’t mean to make you feel like he hated you. Hell if he could all he wanted you to feel was his love for you. But everytime he saw you with Zelo, the green-eyed monster always popped out and took over “Aaaaaggghhh!” He let out a frustrated groan as he squatted down, shaking his head in dismay. “That’s the problem. I do like you….” His voice was a small mumble.
“You what?” You looked down at him, frozen in disbelief. Did you hear him right? He liked you. As a friend? A foe? A lover? At this moment you were so happy you weren’t hated.
“Uhg! It’s just everytime I see you all over Junhong, cooing and doting on him…It’s just annoying as hell to watch…” Daehyun grumbled, looking everywhere else but in front of you. “I get that you guys have history, but you know…” He let out a sigh before gulping in a large amount of air. “I like you a lot so seeing you being all intimate with another guy…well let’s say that I planned to prank Junhong that would embarrass till no tomorrow in retaliation. But it doesn’t even matter anymore…I freackin blew it with my immature butt.”
You couldn’t help but allow a small smile to appear on your face. Daehyun was jealous. Acting like a fool. Plotting revenge. All just because he liked you. You couldn’t help but feel giddy with joy that the love that you thought would never happen beared fruit. You squatted down so that the two of you were at eye level and a small chuckle escaped your lips as you watched Daehyun puff his cheeks out in a pout. You tilted your head to the side to get a better look till you couldn’t resist anymore and poked his cheek.
“You did screw up pretty bad…” You chuckled as the wrinkle between his brows began to form. “But even so, I still like you.” Daehyun’s ears perked up at that and he immediately turned around to face.
“Really!?” He stared at you, jaw dropped and eyes wide with disbelief.
“Yes, of course!” You giggled at his cute reaction. “What I have with Junhong….It’s like a brother and sister relationship. I have a baby brother back in my hometown so I tend to be very doting on people I see as little brothers. Old habits die hard.” You shrugged your shoulders.
“Hmmmmm…” Daehyun pursed his lips in contemplation.
“What are you plotting now?” You cocked an eyebrow, curious at what he would conjure, but also slightly fearful…well for Zelo anyways.
“I’m thinking about whether I would rather have you see me as a little brother than a lover than.” He smirked slightly, flashing you his adorable canine teeth. This was the Daehyun that you loved. Though grumpy Daehyun was cute too.
“I think you’ll like the latter because I don’t do this,” You leaned in and gave Daehyun a kiss on his plump lips. The kiss was slow, sweet, gentle. A Kodak moment kiss. When you parted a smug little grin was on your face. “To people who are my little brothers.” A large grin spread on Daehyun’s face.
“I hope not, or else I might have to kill Junhong instead.” He chuckled, leaning in and giving you an eskimo kiss, his hands holding yours and playing with your fingers.
“Now come on, silly. We still have to go get Junhong his chocolate syrup.” You chuckled as you pulled Daehyun up along with you. Once the two of you were standing, Daehyun immediately wrapped you up in a back hug, his chin resting on your shoulder.
“Should I consider this our first date then?” Daehyun chuckled as he nuzzled into your neck.
“I didn’t know you were so cuddly on first dates.” You chuckled as you attempted to walk with Daehyun clinging to you like a koala.
“Hey, if Junhong gets doted on for being your little brother then I get to be spoiled for being your boyfriend,” You rolled your eyes at his chuckle, but still rewarded the cutie with a peck on the lips. “As my first act as spoiled boyfriend, I refuse to let you be so cuddly and snuggly with Junhong. That is reserved for me.”
“Oh my God, you are so cute when you’re jealous!” You bursted into laughter, pinching Daehyun’s cheek.
