I keep seeing bible analysis atm but I feel sad there’s less talk about old poetry influence in Tolkien’s work atm too. Which in itself is from Christian times or when pagan /Christian’s overlapped, but is also so much more than religious view point of the time too. It’s love, loss, joys, or fun and all parts of humanity and more that’s timeless. Not about who to be by soul, but just life in general or fun stories to share with friends
So here’s some recommendations cose these poems are amazing
The Wanderer
A stunning poem all about grief, yearning and loneliness that’s timeless. Technology changes but human emotions can echo through time. There’s some fun analysis of this poem being a romantic yearning too
Old English version
Where has the horse gone?
Where are my kindred?
Where is the giver of treasure?
Where are the benches to bear us?
Joys of the hall to bring us together?
No more, the bright goblet!
All gone, the mailed warrior!
Lost for good, the pride of princes!
Tolkiens
Where now the horse and rider?
Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberg, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills, into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

The Battle of the Trees
Hard not to see work of famed Welsh poet in Tolkiens imagining of the ents marching to battle. You can imagine this poem almost being hobbits recounting the battle.
The prickly rose-bushes,
Against a host, of giants,
The raspberry brake did
What is better failed
For the security of life.
Privet and woodbine
And ivy on its front,
Like furze to the combat
The cherry-tree was provoked.
The birch, notwithstanding his high mind,
Was late before he was arrayed.
Not because of his cowardice,
But on account of his greatness.
The laburnuin held in mind,
That your wild nature was foreign.
Pine-trees in the porch,
The chair of disputation,
By me greatly exalted,
In the presence of kings
The elm with his retinue,
Did not go aside a foot
He would fight with the centre,
The Riddles of King Heithrek
One of my fav Odin stories from myth and a lessor talked about one. There’s many riddle contests in old Norse mythology Tolkien pulled from for many great moments. I feel Odins ‘what did I whisper to Baldur’ is inspiration for Bilbo’s ‘what do I have in my pocket.’ Both Gollum and the king are enraged by it.
Odin too is in disguise in the poem and when the king rages he turns into a hawk to fly away to avoid being struck by a cursed sword (certain death). I suspect shapeshifting ways of the elves and Sauron and others are inspiration from stories like this.
HEITHREK said: “Good is thy riddle, Gestumblindi, and guessed it is: You sate on a wall and saw a falcon bear an eider duck to the cliff.”
GESTUMBLINDI said: 36 “Who are the twain that on ten feet run? three eyes they have, but only one tail. Aright guess now this riddle, Heithrek!”
HEITHREK said: “Good is thy riddle, Gestumblindi, and guessed it is: that is Óthin riding on Sleipnir.”31
37 Then Gestumblindi said: “Guess one more riddle, since wiser thou seemest than any other wight:32 what said Óthin in Baldr’s ear before he was borne to the fire?”33
The king answered:
“But wicked spellsand wantonness. I ween that it was: the words thou spakest no wight knoweth but thou, ill and unclean wight.”34
Then the king drew the sword Tyrfing and struck at Gestumblindi, but he changed himself into a hawk and flew out through the opening of the roof. The sword reached the hawk’s tail, and that is why it now has a short tail, so heathen folk believe. But Óthin was now enraged at Heithrek, because he had struck at him. That same night the king was killed with Tyrfing (by thralls who sought revenge and their freedom).
Alvissmol
Another riddle/knowledge contest! But this time it’s Thors wisdom. Thor is hard done by portrayed as muscled jock but in few poems and archeological evidence he’s actually more about wisdom than his hammer hitting (tho some poems it’s all hammer time)
This is like in the Hobbit where Gandalf keeps the trolls arguing until daybreak where they turn to stone.
In this poem Thor keeps a dwarf in a riddle/knowledge contest until day break where the dwarf turns into stone.
Thor spake: 33. "Answer me, Alvis! | thou knowest all, Dwarf, of the doom of men: What call they the ale, | that is quaffed of men, In each and every world?"
Alvis spake: 34. "'Ale' among men, | 'Beer' the gods among, In the world of the Wanes 'The Foaming'; 'Bright Draught' with giants, | 'Mead' with dwellers in hell, 'The Feast-Draught' with Suttung's sons."
Thor spake:.3.5. "In a single breast | I never have seen More wealth of wisdom old;
[34. Suttung's sons: these ought to be the giants, but the giants are specifically mentioned in line 3. The phrase "Suttung's sons" occurs in Skirnismol, 34, clearly meaning the giants. Concerning Suttung as the possessor of the mead of poetry, cf. Hovamol, 104.]
But with treacherous wiles | must I now betray thee: The day has caught thee, dwarf! (Now the sun shines here in the hall.)"
[35. Concerning the inability of the dwarfs to endure sunlight, which turns them into stone, cf. stanza 16 and note. Line 5 may be spurious.]
Voluspo
Lot going on in this poem but worth seeing the list of dwarf names as you can spot many Tolkiens character names in it. Even Gandalf as a name of a dwarf.
10. Very few of the dwarfs named in this and the following stanzas are mentioned elsewhere. It is not clear why Durin should have been singled out as authority for the list. The occasional repetitions suggest that not all the stanzas of the catalogue came from the same source. Most of the names presumably had some definite significance, as Northri, Suthri, Austri, and Vestri ("North," "South", "East," and "West"), [fp. 7] Althjof ("Mighty Thief'), Mjothvitnir ("Mead-Wolf"), Gandalf ("Magic Elf'), Vindalf ("Wind Elf'), Rathwith ("Swift in Counsel"), Eikinskjaldi ("Oak Shield"), etc., but in many cases the interpretations are sheer guesswork.]
12. Vigg and Gandalf) | Vindalf, Thrain,
Thekk and Thorin, | Thror, Vit and Lit,
Nyr and Nyrath,-- | now have I told--
Regin and Rathsvith-- | the list aright.
13. Fili, Kili, | Fundin, Nali,
Heptifili, | Hannar, Sviur,
Frar, Hornbori, | Fræg and Loni,
Aurvang, Jari, | Eikinskjaldi.
14. The race of the dwarfs | in Dvalin's throng
Down to Lofar | the list must I tell;
The rocks they left, | and through wet lands
They sought a home | in the fields of sand.
15. There were Draupnir | and Dolgthrasir,
Hor, Haugspori, | Hlevang, Gloin,
[12. The order of the lines in this and the succeeding four stanzas varies greatly in the manuscripts and editions, and the names likewise appear in many forms. Regin: probably not identical with Regin the son of Hreithmar, who plays an important part in the Reginsmol and Fafnismol, but cf. note on Reginsmol, introductory prose.
14. Dvalin: in Hovamol, 144, Dvalin seems to have given magic runes to the dwarfs, probably accounting for their skill in craftsmanship, while in Fafnismol, 13, he is mentioned as the father of some of the lesser Norns. The story that some of the dwarfs left the rocks and mountains to find a new home on the sands is mentioned, but unexplained, in Snorri's Edda; of Lofar we know only that he was descended from these wanderers.]
Dori, Ori, | Duf, Andvari,
Skirfir, Virfir, | Skafith, Ai.
16. Alf and Yngvi, | Eikinskjaldi,
Fjalar and Frosti, | Fith and Ginnar;
So for all time | shall the tale be known,
The list of all | the forbears of Lofar.
There’s so much more like Gaelic poetry and sagas and old Persian poetry etc Beowulf too
There’s some old YouTube and podcasts out there addressing the poems and Tolkiens academic studies too esp ones I didn’t talk about

okay i'm gonna post a bunch of pics i took at the seattle art museum with my phone lol - i pasted the full captions onto/beside the images but i'll put the titles and artists underneath in text too.
Tumblr media
Weltempfänger (World Receiver) (2018) - Isa Genzken
I started in the modern art area specifically in the section with post-war german art mostly engaging w/ the war in some way, which is neat, but the presentation left me kind of wondering who had curated it. there was a lot of vague language and i'm not sure that any of the artists were like... jewish...?
there were like three pieces by a sculptor who is apparently one of the top 1000 wealthiest men in germany though. lmao. didn't take a picture of those though.
anyway then was the rest of the modern art.
Tumblr media
View from the Other Side of the Mountain (1985) - Roger Brown
i liked this painting. the sense of scale etc. w/ the little tiny people is good.
Tumblr media
A Cloud Index (2020) - Spencer Finch
Tumblr media
Untitled (2001) - Cameron Martin
Thought this was striking. I like that the background and the tree body are slightly different shades of white.
Tumblr media
(background): You Mist, Again (Rattle) (2019) - Natalie Ball
(foreground): IF I RULED THE WORLD (2018) - Jeffrey Gibson
There was a section on modern art by marginalized groups which included some indigenous artists, black artists, and stuff, that was pretty cool.
Tumblr media
Architecture of return, escape (the British Museum) (2022) - Nicholas Galanin
(this is a floorplan of the British Museum in the context of indigenous American art pieces that have not been repatriated)
Tumblr media
Painting, 1950 - Ad Reinhardt
Tumblr media
Untitled (1963) - Mark Rothko
I was a little bit psyched to see this. I didn't check what they had ahead of time so I had no idea they had in person Rothko paintings (two of them! though i only took a pic of this one) I always liked his color paintings since I learned about it in college so it was really neat to see this up close and be able to see the like... texture of the paint and stuff.
Tumblr media
(left): Frog Feast Bowl (1997)
(right): Whale Hat (1999)
Both by Preston Singletary.
I thought these were neat. Glasswork has such an interesting feel.
Tumblr media
There was this as well—Shaman's Soul Catcher (2000)—by the same glass artist plus underneath it an 1860 Tsimshian bone soul catcher, as a contrast/comparison. Both very pretty in very different ways.
The places I've lived have often had coastal tribal art in various areas but going to the museum and seeing a lot of the artworks in this section was neat because at least half of the stuff on display has abalone shell so it's very sparkly in person. the public carvings and paintings outside usually don't have abalone lol
There was a lot of Native art from all up and down the coast from like, oly to canada, which was really cool to see. I'm not sure how much of it is donated by the tribes or not but I know that's a thing—the MAC in Spokane does that. Plus there's the Burke here which has the Native American Advisory Board. But there's still a chance some of the stuff at the SAM is like... less than ethical.
this is on their website though:
it seems like most of their stuff is probably ethical but there's always a chance some of it isn't, esp since the section on Native art mentions that "grave goods and certain categories of cultural objects" may be repatriated which kind of implies some don't have to be.
a huge chunk of the very large collection comes from one guy:
Tumblr media
Headress with frontlet (sakíid) (ca. 1870) - Simeon Sdiihldaa (skil kingaans)
This is very pretty and seems important and valuable.
Tumblr media
(background): Interior housepost (Dłam) (ca. 1907) - Arthur Shaughnessy (Hemasilakw)
(foreground): Mask of the Hux̱whukw-Cannibal Bird (Hux̱whukw'iwe') (ca. 1940) - Mungo Martin (Nakapankam)
There were a bunch of these (as well as some other masks) which were pretty cool, and I think the lower beaks are hinged. It would be neat to see them used.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mask of the Hux̱whukw-Cannibal Bird (Hux̱whukw'iwe') (ca. 1938) - Willie Seaweed (Hilamas)
this one was really big.
Tumblr media
more on the house posts and their history. there was another pair (two big faces stacked) on the opposite side of the room I didn't take a pic of. All of the stuff is very pretty but obviously there's a lot of shitty history—like potlatch bans and houses being dismantled—that's just kind of inextricable in both the US and Canada.
adjacent to the large local native art there was a section of Australian Dreaming art as well, with a small short documentary/interview with one of the artists playing nearby.
Tumblr media
Kalipinypa Rockhole (2003) - Elizabeth Marks Nakamarra
I only took a picture of this one. It's very striking. The entrance to this area had a hot pink wall with a black and white painting and then inside was all very dark walls. I think it's one of those things that's best in person (lots of art is, really)
nearby was some Japanese art and they had a whole case of netsuke
Tumblr media
Seated Monkey Poking at a (Turtle? I think... got cut off lol) (ca. 1770) - Okatomo
It was hard to photograph cause they're so small and in a glass case but they all had such fine details, it was neat to look at them and see all the little tiny lines
Tumblr media
There were quite a few, ivory and wood, plus fish sculpture... this one didn't photograph very well though. the fish is really beautiful.
Tumblr media
I like these deer-shaped bronze water droppers too. There were a bunch of them of various sizes.
Tumblr media
Concretion of Chinese porcelain fragments and coral from a shipwreck, 17th/early 18th century
There were sections on Japanese art, Chinese art, and some Vietnamese porcelain and I thought this was neat. I didn't take a photograph but directly next to this was a modern porcelain sculpture that was definitely intended to be a pairing in overall form and shape and material but still very different.
Tumblr media
Ivory, ostrich egg, and silver pieces. I think this section was meant to be a kind of comparison of similar art forms separated by location and temporality—the ways similar forms convergently exist in different locales and time periods. There was an insane-looking Tiffany silver goblet near a much older and simpler silver goblet. Or tankard? it may have been tankards. I didn't take a picture.
next place I went was the ancient art cause that was the nearest bathroom lol—actually it was next to the Italian and Christian European art which I didn't take any photos of. I like medieval and renaissance European art fine but after like. 2 or 3 hours at the museum I was more interested in the Ancient Egyptian and Greek stuff lol.
Tumblr media
like this 1st century snake bracelet from Roman Egypt. Phone camera refused to focus though... But like, hey that's wild, that bracelet is probably almost 2000 years old. it's so pretty and i wonder what the red coloration in the lines is. maybe it's a gold alloy? or pigment?
Tumblr media
they had a bunch of Roman glasswork as well which is always fun to see. Lots of people think of pristine white marble (it was painted!) when they think of Classical art but glass was such a distinctive thing in those periods—the iridescence and color especially
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
They had some Greek vases as well, and this Etruscan krater lid with sirens painted on it, which was pretty cool.
Tumblr media
also Check out these Sumerian (and one Elamite) frogs!!!!!!
Tumblr media
look at them!!!
Tumblr media
Babylonian clay foundation peg with cuneiform inscription ca. 2400 BC—think about that. That's like. over 4000 years old. Crazy.
Tumblr media
next to the Egyptian art was Islamic art, and I really liked this silver pen and ink holder. It had so many fine details. The entire section was really beautiful. for some reason this also ended up my highest resolution photo? lmao? i don't understand my phone camera at all.
Tumblr media
this Turkish floral tile from the 16th century is so pretty
i hit the image limit so i'm gonna add the last four pictures on a reblog

"Somaliske erindringer" ("Somali memoirs")
In the community play "Somaliske erindringer" seven Danish-Somali citizens took the stage. Together they presented a mosaic story, made both from memories and hopes for the future. The play was presented in the heart of Gellerup, a part of Aarhus which the Danish government had declared a "ghetto" at the time.
