What the HELL is going on? YouTube?
Originally posted on nikkeisimmer tumblr by me -moving to more appropriate rant blog
Ivan Ortega loses YouTube Channel that he put a lot of effort and skill into and to have that happen to a stand-up guy like that is a goddamned shame and an absolute disgrace. This is the kind of shit that YouTube pulls off that really pisses me off. Lord help you if you have a viewpoint the slightest bit different from the gigantic PC echo-chamber. If you voice it, you get shut down. And it’s especially evident in today’s society.
I couldn’t even watch straight through to the end of Ivan’s video explaining what happened because I was so pissed off that Youtube wouldvdo that and they didn’t even give him the benefit of a warning (if he even contravened any rules).
It’s an absolute shitshow over at Disney-Lucasfilm. PC culture is completely out of hand and it’s an absolute shame to see a channel that Ivan put in as a labor of love for the fans of a franchise that many of us have felt has been trashed by Disney.
Censorship will never be right no matter what wrapping you put on it.

By the way the paper by Dr. Cass this is about is a disgraceful hatchetjob, that would get any real academic crucified for its methodology.
Dr. Cass herself is a known defender of conversion therapy, practice most medics in the world consider torture, and consulted, among other things, Ron DeSanctimoipus himself.
So yeah
Are you guys happy about the "brain finishes maturing at 25" myth getting recognition are you going to be happy when you're fighting in the twitter wars and the transmasc you're arguing with goes "um you're actually harassing a 23 year old minor" and in the eyes of the british medical system he's telling the truth

I have zero sympathy with the Sad Puppy movement or gamergate or whatever but the slacktivist cliques that rose to power in the subcultures that organized reaction arose in - these slacktivist cliques are in many ways equally politically retrogressive to any such reactionary movement, with a generous side of pettiness and ruthless ambition. The friendly socdem nerdlingers you're supposed to love and identify with and see as a proxy for your own struggles would be willing to kill you to get ahead, and they each of them have skeletons in their closet, some quite literal.
Like, in all the analyses of Attack Helicopter I've seen, people read the anti screeds with too much good faith; genuinely a large motivator for the initial push against that story and its author was done in staggeringly bad faith, in the style of a livejournal hatchetjob, deliberately inflammatory, lying through their teeth about key details (the principals absolutely knew IF was born in 1988 and that it was not in fact a fash dogwhistle, but they also knew pretending otherwise would get people to see red against someone they disliked), and just generally trying to will someone out of physical existence whom they had written off as "annoying overstepping white boy"when it turned out they were even 1% incorrect about who she was and how resonant people would find her insights on shit like the uncomfortable relationship between institutional queerness and the MIC.
As someone who is a trans minority who writes FSF, aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Sorry if all of this is a mess, but I kind of feel like screaming literally all of the time about it
while we're on the subject of 2000s nerd culture, if you have even a little background on who's who in nerd-culture livejournal drama, it's like having the They Live glasses for the entire FSF scene in the 2010s and 2020s. The leaders of the mob against Isabel Fall were people they argued with once too often on fucking LJ in the Obama administration, and (non-churned) leadership in that scene generally gets away with murder. Which apparently extends as far as trying to suicide-bait a trans colleague; fun world

So, I stumbled upon my searches some criticisms made by critics about Ariel that led directly to that idiot Jeffrey Katzenberg hiring Linda Woolverton to make a hatchetjob on Beauty and the Beast and its moral in a similar manner to Starship Troopers and for similar reasons. One of the complaints made by them besides Ariel being cloyingly sexist for going for Eric was that she didn't come across as being impressive due to being manipulated by both her father and Ursula, and Eric came across as a more dynamic character.
Well, I can't deny that Eric's a dynamic character by any stretch, and I will acknowledge that Ursula DID manipulate Ariel (but to be fair, Ursula was supposed to be the main villain, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Ariel was manipulated by a villain, even if she were male.). However, Triton never "manipulated" Ariel at any point. He didn't trick her into doing something she didn't want to do, and in fact, part of the conflict actually dealt with Triton being unable to control her and make her do things he wanted, or rather, force her to not do things she wanted to do because he disliked those elements. He at least made clear his likes and dislikes, even openly admitting or at least strongly implying that he would commit genocide against humanity were it fully up to him when Ariel tried to point out that if she didn't save Eric, he would have drowned. And for the record, Ursula aside, Ariel was NEVER manipulated easily even if we WERE to assume Triton did manipulate her, and even THERE, the only reason Ursula was even remotely successful regarding manipulating Ariel into allowing Ursula to attack her dad was because she caught her at a very bad time (in fact, I wouldn't even say it was THAT easy, considering Ariel outright refused Flotsam & Jetsam's direct attempts at suggesting she go see Ursula. I believe her exact words in response were "The Sea Witch? Well, I... No! Get out of here, leave me alone!" So they flicked part of Eric's statue remains at her to get her to reconsider while pretending to take their leave. Heck, even during the deal, Ariel showed noticeable hesitance at going through with it, first stating with hesitation that whether she succeeded in the deal, let alone if she failed, she'd never see her family again, and then citing she didn't have anything to pay with, and even tried to ponder how she could even get Eric to fall for her if she can't even speak. Aladdin had a far easier time manipulating Jafar into becoming a Genie than Ursula did regarding Ariel). You want an example of a character who IS manipulated by everyone? Try Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2 (or to a certain extent Solid Snake in most of the games he was in), heck, even Anakin Skywalker in the Prequel Trilogy of Star Wars if you wish.
And it's sad that this criticism of Ariel, among others, led directly to Katzenberg demanding a complete rewrite of Beauty and the Beast to push a left-wing feminist agenda and even hiring that feminazi Linda Woolverton to ensure it was done, leading to both the film itself and even Belle to be utterly ruined as a result, especially when during the climax of that film when Belle was caught in a similar situation regarding Gaston and Beast, she arguably was FAR WORSE than Ariel there. At least Ariel can claim she was tricked by Ursula for Ursula basically cursing her dad, not to mention a lot of times Ariel seemed to at least show awareness of the risks such as the risk of encountering sharks in the beginning. Belle basically rejected Gaston after clearly deducing from the onset that he was the reason Maurice was being arrested then and there in order to blackmail her for her hand in marriage, then despite clearly being aware of what Gaston's truly like as a result of this deduction, managed to expose Beast to the congregated mob, and based on her yelling "No!" when Gaston started rabblerousing, she clearly didn't even anticipate Gaston would do that, despite it being very obvious especially after the blackmail scheme that Gaston would literally do anything, even extremely amoral stuff, to ensure she married him. And thanks to THAT, she nearly got Beast and his servants killed. So, in other words, in an attempt to fix a perceived problem made by critics who most likely didn't even watch the film (seriously, they'd have to have failed to see it if they literally think Triton manipulated Ariel, which clearly was not the case, or infer that Ariel didn't do anything of note other than pine for Eric, when her literal opening scene had her fighting off a shark, not to mention her iconic song, Part of Your World, made very explicit that she wanted to become human long before she was even AWARE of Eric's existence, let alone met him [as if her plundering a sunken ship at the beginning wasn't enough of a hint that Ariel had some desires to learn more about humanity]. Heck, she even saved Eric twice), they arguably made the perceived problem into an actual, even WORSE problem in the film which made Belle look like a careless backstabber, a rat even [and speaking as someone who was a pet owner of rats, I feel uncomfortable using that term in a derogatory way since rats, contrary to the stereotype, are actually very loyal pets] who is willing to sell out her friends to get out of a jam. Though to Belle's credit, she does at least acknowledge that bit WAS indeed all her fault, unlike earlier in the film where she failed to take ANY responsibility for the whole Wolf Incident.

Fully agreed with you there about Woolverton. Her constant bashing of Belle's predecessors (and not just Snow White either, pretty much all of them from Cinderella to Aurora, heck even Ariel since she bashed her as being a clueless girl who married a boy she just met) was just below the pale, especially when half of them were abused by their parents and practically survivors. And yeah, the triplets also got a raw deal as well, even worse in that they never even got ACTUAL inner ugly characteristics beyond crushing on Gaston (which isn't even an actual ugly characteristic anyway, especially when it's left unclear whether they were even AWARE of Gaston's darker nature). Babette got a slightly better treatment insofar as she's at least treated as a good guy for most of the movie (even if she's implied to be sexually loose like Lumiere), unlike the triplets where, similar to Percy the Pug, we're fully expected to boo them as villains despite them not actually DOING anything wrong besides crushing on Gaston. But still, she wasn't really treated all that well all things considered. Funnily enough, however, and maybe it's due to plenty of other franchises and characters (Tifa Lockhart, the various Dead or Alive girls, Barbie, Samus Aran whenever she's not power-suited, Lara Croft, etc., etc.) being closer to their build than Belle's, but I'd argue that, if anything, their beauty actually DOES look that, while Belle's beauty you really can't take seriously at all. And don't get me started on Woolverton's hatchetjob towards Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty (and BTW, here's something to consider: Angelina Jolie apparently was AGAINST making Maleficent a full-on good guy, even had to repeatedly try and dissuade Woolverton from doing so). I've already had to put up with a flaming misandrist professor in college (not to mention three to four radical leftist professors during that time, five or six, tops), and am NOT fond of people of her ilk.
Heck, I wouldn't even say Belle's intelligent at all at this point. I wouldn't even be surprised if she ends up blindly parroting any pretentious individual she finds just because they're deemed "smart". Sort of like Cecile Cosima Caminades from Peace Walker regarding Sartre (bear in mind that this was toned down in the English version. Japanese version? She squealed at the mere mention of Sartre's name by Snake):
youtube
And THAT'S the best case scenario. Worst case scenario, especially given the implied setting of the film being the eve of the French Revolution, I suspect she'll end up behaving exactly like Sephiroth did after he stumbled upon those science journals after a trip to Mt. Nibel reactor:
youtube
Even have her turn against Adam as well, not to mention go all Khmer Rouge on that village. Let's just say that Gaston may have actually had a point behind his decrying of reading, getting ideas, and thinking after similar stuff occurred during that time in real history. In fact, this is such a big fear of mine that the only reason I'd even RISK associating with Woolverton at all, DESPITE knowing her blatant misandry, is purely to determine whether or not Belle actually WOULD end up becoming a Jacobin or not, hoping she doesn't, but being prepared if Woolverton DOES think she'd become a Jacobin. Let's face it, being well-read doesn't necessarily make you intelligent or immune to mob rule, either instigating it or being swayed by it. Just ask Sarte, since aside from his being a philosophical giant was apparently very literate, and a voracious writer, yet he STILL ended up swayed multiple times to sing praises to people like Mao Zedong or Che Guevara.
And seriously, she's an outcast because she loves books? Ignoring for one second that the fact that the village even has a bookstore at all suggests there's plenty others besides Belle who can read, the setting of the film in real life had France being the highest-literacy nation in the world (in fact, ironically enough, it was PRECISELY their highly literate reputation that caused them to undergo the French Revolution due to Voltaire and his buddies hijacking the French Academy to push their anti-Christian screeds). If anything, had it been real history, the villagers would treat Belle like a god due to her literacy (and that's IF her literacy was as advanced as the story claims. The fact that she only seems to read fairy tales in the original movie indicates she's average level at best, if even that. Aurora had more hints at actually BEING an advanced-level reader by being literate during the 15th century).
And don't get me started on the misandry displayed in Maleficent and even Beauty and the Beast (I mean, sure, BATB's misandry wasn't quite as blatant as in Maleficent where ALL the males, even Diavolo, were depicted as either "evil", useless, or in the case of Diavolo, a chew toy for Maleficent to abuse. But it definitely was still apparent when most of the guys were depicted mostly in a similar bad manner. Gaston's pretty obvious, but even the good characters, including Beast, weren't treated well at all.). All Woolverton's handiwork. On that note, I couldn't help but notice she conveniently doesn't have the enchantress reappear at all in the film, effectively getting away with cursing a child and his servants just because he effectively practiced stranger danger, sort of like how Maleficent was treated as good and justified despite cursing a newborn baby just because her ex removed her wings. Instead of using the Enchantress as the villain, which would have been the more logical decision to make, we got a gender studies archetype instead.
Can I ask your take on Linda Wolverton ? I saw this old post and it kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I think there's nothing wrong with preferring reading to baking, especially since back then there wasn't any Disney heroine whose hobby was books yet, but it felt like a jab at Snow White to meet, am I wrong?
https://at.tumblr(dot)com/princessposie/pinkballerinas-belle-books-belle-is-not/20j6l8e6ppry
I'm just going to be blunt- I don't like Linda Wolverton at all and I think she ultimately is a misogynist and you can kind of see that in her writing. The way she took one of the most beautiful and perfect matriarchies, as seen in the original Sleeping Beauty, and distorted it to say true love doesn't exist and the person who will save you will be the one who cursed you and just ruin gender relations and make men entirely inept and making all women but the ones "misunderstood" by society (but are actually evil...like, honestly, who curses a baby on account of the father being their ex???) to be useless idiots. I...I honestly think she's a misandrist who thinks she's intellectually superior to others and you can see that in how she wrote Beauty and the Beast. Belle is the only character allowed to be attractive, but if you're also attractive like Babette and the Bimbettes, you need to oversexualized to the point where no one will ever take you seriously. Ugh I have so much more to say on her, but I'll refrain lol OP is a good blog though and I think that anecdote was about how Linda wanted to keep her work the way she intended it, but Linda does take a potshot at Snow White whenever she can and she just has really problematic views on women and other people and I sincerely hope she can work some of them out when she's not being adored by endless crowds of fans that think she's the greatest thing since sliced bread because she put Alice in Wonderland in pants in the live action

Scruton, riffing on his thought that “consumerism [is] the necessary result of democracy,” takes aim at the “visitor from the East Coast cities” for whom the “suburban sprawl of Texas is an appalling affront to civilization” put together by a kind of American “who is plainly of another species from the liberal” (Fox News would be proud) who is too smug and self-satisfied to see the sprawl for what it is: private property, “the cornerstone of their own independence.” What is going on here? What happened to Roger Scruton, writer and lecturer on aesthetics, scourge of modernist architecture? Where is the editor of the “elitist” Salisbury Review, whose namesake considered Downing Street too common to live in as prime minister? Where is the common sense conservative who recognizes that covering the land of the free in soulless, environmentally degrading, and economically inefficient urban/suburban/exurban “sprawl” is not, by default, the noblest expression of the principle of private property?
Clement Knox, “A Very British Hatchetjob: Review of Roger Scrutons ‘Fools, Frauds, and Firebrands,’” The Los Angeles Review of Books, published on January 18, 2016, accessed at https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/a-very-british-hatchet-job/
