【Photography Beyond Frame】Self Evaluation / Stage 2

Stage 2

I was planning to make a book, but I changed my plan to making interactive works. The reason is because I wanted to take advantage of this course, “Vision and Technology” and experiment different visual effects using different medium. Although I knew it could result in a defect of the feeling of a personal belonging, so as weakens the meaning of “security and existence,” I thought it would be worth focusing on interactive and empirical elements, which I almost never would try if it were not in this module.

Although the exhibiting method changed, my aim in this project stayed the same, to show the beauty, energy, tolerance of plants. I was planning to make works that encourage people to feel nature them from 3 different senses, smell, vison, and touch.

Smell

I was interested in the idea of perfuming paper with some kind of plant oil as I had in the Stage 1. The paper was supposed to smell when it was rubbed. But I realized rubbing to smell something doesn’t really happen when you encounter with nature. You smell the nature as you walk deeper in the forest as if you are smelling the breath of nature. So I removed the idea from my option. Instead, I decided to make 3D print of a plant and place it with aroma diffuser in the clear box, so the audience can simulate the encounter with nature and its smell without actually going into the nature. As I made the 3D models, I came up with the idea of making small holes in the plant, so the audience can smell directly from the plant. One problem I had is I was not able to 3D print the bushes with leaves because the leaves is too thin for 3D scanning system to keep track of. In the end, I ended up 3D printing the cactus which was discrete from the original concept.

Vison

Because I really like the idea of taking something under the water, such as water plant, I decided to keep on shooting this object. Taking pictures of plant in the water was technically difficult. I first attempted to do it with Hasselbrad medium format film camera because I thought it can express the deep and delicate colors of the world inside of the water. One of the problems I had was the reflection of the sunlight on the surface of water. I had to find a perfect angle to avoid the reflection. It was especially harder when sun was strong. Another problem I had was the wind and rain that makes waves on water and interfere with the vision to see the object in the water. I had to check whether cast and pick a perfect date and time for the shoot. Although I chose it, London’s weather never kept the promise with me . The last problem was the darkness and weak contrast of the objects in the water. However, if I brought up the exposure, the reflecting surface of the water became more brighter that makes even harder to see inside. So I settled down taking dark image and brought back the contrast and brightness in post production. Apart from this method, I also thought about try photogram of plants from inside of water like Susan Derges. However, because water plant was growing from the bottom of water, placing the photographic paper underneath the it seemed almost impossible unless I made a set in studio by myself.

Touch

I never really got time to work on this one, but the plan was to take picture of one specific tree that can generate paper, and print on the paper made from the fibers of the tree. I was interested in the idea of providing an encounter with nature by just a surface of print. Also, I thought it would be interesting if I make an art object simulating a branch, with the texture printed paper that’s made from the plant.
