Just genuinely curious from that poll you posted, why di you hate all those groups you listed?

enhypen: mean-spirited boys who are all untalented besides the one rather normal guy in their group. equivalent of an mba frat boy meeting in kpop. every song is worse than the last and these guys turn into even worse caricatures of themselves. if mean girls were all men and a kpop group, this would be them.

bts: most lacklustre artistic fall-off since the invention of music, terrible and vile fandom, extremely unsympathetic and overhyped members in this group. honestly there is a laundry list of issues from plagiarism to boring music to terrible behaviour and to fandom shit that we could be here until the weekend.

skz: they have some musically talented members (hashtag seungmin solo stan) but their entire vibe is just absolutely off. the music doesn’t hit for me, the fans are absolutely off their rocker, this entire group does not put the money where their mouths are and i have zero tolerance for lacklustre artists that tell me they are god’s gift to the stage. jyp having the nerve to let them follow up after got7 and 2pm is crazy.

nct dream: they walked so enhypen could run, the even worse version of super junior and super junior is already terrible and shouldn’t have happened (ryeowook could have been a soloist) and this is just their formula distilled into a new group. lucky for us the most popular members are just as bad as the ogs and just as untalented. if i could scratch jeno out of public conscience, i would have done so four years ago.

exo: i mellowed out in my old age but i used to be a debut fan up until 2015/16 and due to a terrible personal experience going back with them i can’t stand to see them. also kai has the worst fandom ever.

zb1: more grifting on like two people at most who can dance here. nearly ruined hui’s life. generic-ass westernised pop music. no sauce, no art, no feeling. just disband them and let that one guy do his bls again.

le sserafim: had the gall to have a good debut and then fell off so crazily that i can’t even look at them. can’t sing, can’t perform live, can barely dance and then go on god’s internet to tell me to feel sorry for them. that is absolutely not happening.

hybe: i don’t hate svt (they are my favourite group besides tvxq and red velvet) but seeing hybe turn them into the next bts is killing me slowly day by day.

i mean all of them besides exo fall into the untalented grifter scheme hybe has put onto kpop so that is already enough reason for me to hate them. i am a person who’s worked in live entertainment for the past eight years so i automatically will not pick up if you try to sell me untalented people as uber-talented. it’s insulting to every other artist who actually gives a fuck about their craft.

I'll narrow this to exo since it asks you to say why 😂 baekhyun & kai. kai had me from his very first teaser in 2011 and never let go. I was bewitched by his dance skills & pretty face and then my fate was sealed when I learned of his complete loser boy personality. baekhyun took literal years to get me to like him let alone make him a bias. he was immature and annoyed the hell out of me. I appreciated his voice, but that was it. once he grew up a bit and became the member who made the type of music that I like most as a soloist, he slowly but surely wore me down 😂

彡✎ No Fan Left Behind: K-Pop Stans as Activists for All

Has any fandoms you’re involved in been part of any protest or acts of social activism (e.g. K-pop and Black Lives Matter)?

K-pop: The fandom where fans will take extreme measures to ensure their faves will stay on top. It's honestly shocking what they can do.

As someone who has and is still in the fandom for many years now, I've witnessed some interesting things that K-pop fans have done in terms of protesting and being involved in social activism on different social media platforms. The sort of protesting or social activism involves mainly cancel culture and boycotting. There are already a few instances of this happening in the K-pop community.

Throwback to when Loona stans boycotted their company

Now you guys might be wondering, what is a Loona? Basically, Loona was a Korean girl group that consisted of 12 members that debuted under BlockBerry Creative, an entertainment company (KProfiles 2023). After numerous comebacks, fans of Loona were hit with the sudden news that one of the members, Chuu, was kicked out of the company. This sparked a lot of confusion and rage from fans who were huge fans of hers.

Chuu had requested an injunction in January 2022 to void the terms of her exclusive contract with BlockBerry Creative. She gave several reasons for her request, including unpaid bills, unbalanced accounts, and a loss of confidence (Han 2023). Ultimately, the injunction was approved, and she left the company. Later on, the rest of the members also filed for termination of their contracts with their current company and left the company.

During the whole situation, Loona fans (called Orbits), decided to boycott the company due to the unfairness that the members of Loona faced. On December 8, 2022, the boycott started, and Loona fans were urged not to buy any records, merchandise, concert tickets, or other LOONA-related products. The group's music and videos could not be streamed or played on any platform, and other actions that would benefit BlockBerry Creative were also prohibited (Koreaboo 2023).

Unfortunately, harassment from BlockBerry Creative doesn't seem to be stopping due to the fact that they are always finding ways to sue the members or stop them from performing on stage again.

Either way BlockBerry Creative could not stop them and they ended up debuting in different groups.

K-pop Fancams and Social Activism

If you've been in the K-pop fandom for quite some time, you'd notice that there are a bunch of these fancams that go around on different social media platforms. I personally see them mostly on Twitter. Essentially, fancams are recordings of famous people or public figures that are made and/or shared by fans. On Twitter, they are particularly well-liked by K-Pop fans. Fancams are most frequently recorded during musical performances when idols are typically dancing and will focus on a certain group member (Fanlore n.d.).

You might be wondering; how can fancams tie back to social activism? Well, there are a few instances where fancams were used as a form of protesting or to even block the spread of false information. During the Black Lives Matter Movement, K-pop fans flooded the iWatch Dallas app with fancams of their favorite artists after the Dallas Police Department requested that people use the app to send videos of "illegal activity from the protests" taking place in the city over the weekend which resulted in overloading the reporting system (Alexander 2020).

Here is an example of a fancam of Seulgi from Red Velvet that was used to block out false information by using relevant hashtags on Twitter:

Hashtag Off-Track

Speaking of hashtags, the K-pop fandom has its fair share of derailing the actual meaning of hashtags on Twitter. We've all clicked on a hashtag only to discover that it was littered with posts that had nothing to do with the hashtag at all. The two main causes of this cacophony are either people grandstanding to gain attention for a trending hashtag or reacting indignantly to whatever they believe the hashtag to be about, which only serves to spread misinformation and obscure the real meaning of the hashtag.

An intentional hashtag derailment is less common. However, white supremacists' attempts to make the phrase "white lives matter" a trendy topic inspired K-pop fans to use the phrase against its proponents. Fans worked tirelessly to fill the White Lives Matter hashtag with fancams, music-related tweets, and tweets about others tweeting about music.

Contrarily, "white lives matter" has continued to trend as a topic for days because of the viral success K-pop fans have garnered for this act. It was briefly presented to me on Twitter as a "K-pop" topic, and it even included the hashtag "#WhiteLifeMatter" as a more popular "music" topic (Romano 2020).

Thoughts and Prayers

In short, unknowingly, the K-Pop fandom has definitely left its mark in terms of fighting for causes such as social activism or partaking in protests to protect their favorites by using their fancams and flooding questionable hashtags on Twitter with their fancams as well.

I woke up around 9 AM (although I was up at 4 AM to feed my cat). I scrolled on tiktok for a record breaking low of 10 minutes while I waited for my coffee to finish brewing. I have a french press, a drip maker, and a keurig available to me. My favorite is french press because the coffee comes out really rich and bold, but I’ve found that the drip maker is much less labor intensive and produces way more coffee. 

I brewed six cups. My roommates never drink any of it even though I’ve let them know they’re welcome to...I really just make six cups because I have a bad habit of not eating breakfast and fueling myself with coffee until lunch. 

Although, I did eat two Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dunkers with my coffee this morning. I bought these a few days ago alongside some chicken potstickers!

I got a text from my sister telling me one of our favorite kpop groups, ITZY, had finally released an english version of their song Not Shy. It definitely banged just as hard as the Korean version, but I’m not used to them speaking English! 

Speaking of kpop, I was checking up on Twitter and saw that #kpop was trending. Turns out, #ImpeachBidenNow had been taken over by the kpop stans, which I loved. (For the uninitiated, whenever a certain kind of hashtag is trending, fans of kpop groups will spam it with videos of their favorite idols during live performances...it’s pretty funny)

After leisure-ing around for as long as I could justify, I decided to get some homework done before work. I started on some concept sketches for Text and Image and only got 3 done before I had to get ready. 

While working on those, I put on Disney Channel’s Gravity Falls. It’s a really nice show to have on in the background when I’m working. Unfortunately, I was getting to the point in Season 2 where the plot really kicks up and I was getting distracted. I ended up switching over to Spotify for the rest of my work time, listening to a lot of TWICE and Red Velvet (...yes those are kpop groups).

For lunch, I popped a Totino’s Party Pizza in the oven. I can’t remember exactly how much the box of 4 I got was, but I know a single pack is like $2. A pretty good deal if you ask me! Regrettably, I ate the whole thing and it made my stomach hurt. It was scrumptious though, so I don’t know if I fully regret it. 

As a palette cleanser, I ate one of those little oranges they sell in the red mesh bags (my roommate is yelling at me to call them Cuties but I refuse because I don’t want to call them that). They’re particularly good this time of year, with the perfect balance of sweet and sour. I’m also just biased heavily toward oranges.

Before heading off to work, I poured some of my morning coffee into my travel mug. It had been sitting on the hotplate of the drip maker all morning, so it’s flavor had...some character to it. I’m not sure if you’ve had coffee after it’s sat out for too long, but it’s got this....crispy taste on top of the bitterness. It wasn’t bad but I don’t think it was good either. 

After my shift, I ate a 2 day old bagel from Panera. I had stopped at the Rosedale Mall Panera with Bryn Adams (shoutout lol) after our Color and Form lab on Wednesday. I got some other food, but I know that bagel cost like $3 dollars tops. It was still good after sitting in a bag for 2 days. 

My roommate also handed me 3 sour cream and onion chips which cost me absolutely nothing. Take that capitalism. 

After eating, I completed the first reading for Design and its Discontents and took notes. I listened to classical music while doing it, which helps me wind down for the night. Some of my favorites are Frühlingsstimmen, op. 410, Nocturne en mi bémol majeur opus 9 n. 2: Ballade en Sol Mineur No. 1 and Peer Gynt Suite 1, Op. 46: Anitra’s Dance. 

Now I’m writing this post, and honestly, it’s been kind of fun to write this stuff down and log what I’m doing. I look forward to the rest of the month!
