i read six books this week, which is really the clearest possible sign i need to up my antidepressants. read the shepherd king duology by rachel gillig (Fine but i had some issues with the authorial style, felt very YA as opposed to NA, did have a very cool magic system, unfortunately i liked the second couple’s banter and relationship Way More than the main couple’s). finished the last three books in the temeraire series, i have not much to say about them except i adored them wholeheartedly. also before i read those i wrote all the below in a fit of pique

the great state of west florida by kent wascom. instagram kept serving me ads for this book and i am once again a little unnerved by meta's advertising.

i had some trouble with this one! on its face it seems like the kind of thing i would eat with a spoon. in practice it's more of a coming-of-age than a just-before-the-apocalypse story and i have a lot of trouble relating to a thirteen-year-old boy. even if he is bisexual. in this interview wascom says he's "re-mythologizing the Western" which i can kind of see? it's very pulp and ultra-violent in a spaghetti western kind of way, and seems written in a way easily adaptable to the screen. not quite vaporwave but a lot of anime influence: the author thanks twelve Japanese directors and manga artists at the end of the book.

there's an odd authorial quirk where the thirteen-year-old boy often points out (internally and externally) that the adults in his life are just talking at him about politics. which is a pretty accurate portrayal of childhood, but lampshading it in this way doesn't really make me excited about wascom's authorial chops? this is your fourth book. this book revolved around a couple brutal fight scenes (and one giant setpiece crowd scene, which has vibes and atmosphere in spades), and that's a perfectly fine reason to write a book, but if that's your strength i would be very happy to have you focus on that instead of sections where both the kid and i the reader are bored.

there's a scene with babysitter/babysittee sexual abuse that unlocks how the abused character makes decisions for the rest of his life, but it was extremely graphic and i wasn't really prepared for that. i don't know that i would have read this book if i had that knowledge aforethought.

overall not quite what i wanted it to be: the author in this interview said he's been working on it for over a decade and had to keep throwing out parts coming true during trump's presidency. i picked this pulpy novel up as an escape from the terrible politics of today, which is not what this books is. i don't know if i buy that he was simply too good at predicting the future, but i do like the choice stated in his interview "I abandoned the predictive stuff and tried to tell a story like it was written on an obelisk in the future, like what Denis Johnson did with Fiskadoro, or Joanna Russ with The Female Man". it does feel very much like the narrator from Mad Max 2 telling his story of meeting Max as a feral kid. again, some interesting ideas in here, does deliver on the Southern Gothic doomed political family aspect, as well as the same flavor of heat-wave climate tragedy as JG Ballard's The Drowned World, but i would have liked to focus more on his cool furiosa-like aunt in a white mustang with an anime mech arm. criminally underused character

watched The Hunter (2011, dir. Nettheim) because of the Temeraire books! they used an archaic name for Tasmania that made me go “where the Fuck is that” and then i looked at the media mentions section of the wikipedia page. beautiful film in a very spare way. lots of long loving shots of willem defoe in the wilderness enduring various weather conditions.

i don’t know if it stuck the landing quite as well as i would like, but like defoe you fall in love with the land and the family so slowly it’s very startling when you finally do fully realize it. i think i was supposed to cry at the end but didn’t quite manage it. one of my favorite springsteen songs is part of the diagetic score in a way that made me cry, which i also did not expect.

I think being a cyborg in a solarpunk future would be way more desirable than in a cyberpunk future. You wouldn't be dehumanized or seen as lesser for your cybernetic modifications and parts wouldn't be subject to planned obsolescence as all cybernetics would be free, customizable, open source and easy to repair. No corporation would own your body in a solarpunk future as there would be no corporations whatsoever in an eco anarchist future. The risk of having your mods taken out because the business that makes those mods shut down wouldn't exist. Solarpunk cybernetics would also focus on being more utilitarian and artistic and less focused on weaponry. there would be minimal risk of being hacked as conflicts between people would be deescalated often. There would be a culture of accessibility and disability pride. Morphological and cognitive liberty would be prioritized and there wouldn't be a eugenicist ableist class dynamic. I think mixing high tech vaporwave with natural ecosystems is such a vibe and there are so many different aesthetics that could arise from a solarpunk culture. There could be indigenous rave aesthetics in one place and psychedelic Art Nouveau in another. from even a writing standpoint, Solarpunk has so much more room for experimentation compared to cyberpunk, which is so homogenous across the genre that it feels like the same story in the same city told over and over again ad nauseam.

I'd like to share my abomination to the world!

INTRODUCING, FRESH!DREAM !!:

INFO:

Fresh!Dream is not possessed by Fresh himself, but was infected by a similar parasite. It lives in his socket and the two co-exist together in a friendly nature solely because Dream doesn't mind being the host too much. He named the parasite Sunshine (or Sunny for short).

Fresh!Dream continues to spread positivity, but RADICALLY.

DESIGN:

-leather jacket that shows the shoulders, short-sleeved

-his undershirt is a yellow collared shirt with a popped collar

-his yellow gloves are actially connected to his arm pads, which are used for skating and archery

-his glasses shades are connected to his crown. the shades are vaporwave and animated!

-he has dark brown leather pants with knee pads strapped to them

-his boots have retractable wheels for skating, basically heelies but cooler

-he has a cartoony sun connecting his jacket :)

-yellow tooth!

-the pupil that Sunny is possessing will be blue. it swaps sockets sometimes.

OTHER:

-his main state of his glasses are "?? ??". the letter O is always replaced with a ? -- so "hello" would say hell?. this is because he's constantly confused!

-he says "yello" rather than "hello", since its slang *and* a pun on the word "yellow"

-he never understands a thing he says and sometimes doesnt even know what hes going on about. "rad! --WHAT AM I SAYING??"

-his parasite is yellow. the tentacles are orange, akin to the sun connecting his jacket

-blushes yellow! :)

-he over-pads himself because he is too much of a coward, for good reason. he Sucks at skating. thus his pads have a lot of scratches

-Sunny is very similar to the original Fresh parasite. he has a yellow body with dark orange spots, resembling a sun or sunflower, around the eye/mouth. the pupil in the center is yellow. he is silly.

Investing in T-shirts! The biggest beneficiaries of Gear Adjustments!

For fashion aficionados like myself, Gear Adjustment is the most exciting part of the upcoming Season. Being able to make small changes to the way your gear is worn is something that opens up a ton of customization while requiring less new stuff (though I'm sure it required a lot of work to add). With that said, for the moment, it is looking like they are limiting the feature to caps and t-shirts. I don't personally think caps are changed very much by the ability to flip them, they're all pretty good as they are, after all. But for t-shirts, being able to oversize them is actually really big. Pun unintended.

T-shirts have the tendency to be modeled in a way that makes them cling really tightly to your character's body, and it is has never looked right to me. Looking at the clothing choices I see in my multiplayer games, I get the impression that is the general sentiment, as well. Oversizing shirts solves their central problem, loosening them up and giving you a less constrained silhouette. In this post, I wanna highlight what I think are the biggest winners of this change are. Shirts I think you should pay attention to once the patch hits.

That said, I should highlight that since we don't have the patch yet I am only assuming these will be Adjustable. We cannot know for sure until the we get the update.

I've picked out ten T-shirts I think are the standouts, split into a couple of different categories, starting with the ones I think you all expected to see here:

Annaki Accessories!

I have to imagine that the Annaki Bracelet Tee and Annaki Choker Tee were some of the first shirts that came to mind when you think of noteworthy T-shirts in this game. They've got nice, dusty colors, the big Annaki A in slick silver, and of course their signature accessories. Oversizing these I think will amplify their punk aesthetic even more, because there's nothing punk about tight-fitting clothing.

Unless it's leather.

And leather these are not.

High-fives for Tie-Dyes!

Tie-Dyes are really fun with their bright, trippy patterns, so it's no surprise that the Takoroka Rainbow Tie Dye and the Takoroka Galactic Tie Dye are some of the better T-shirts in the game. We did see the Rainbow Tie Dye get Adjusted in the reveal trailer, and is it just me or does that just seem right for these kinds of shirts? Something about them screams "wear me at one size larger."

Ride the Wave!

Next up, we've got the Firewave Tee, Icewave Tee, and the Vaporwave Tee. There is also a Duskwave Tee, but I am personally not a big fan of the shade of orange they use for the bottom half of that shirt. That said, I think the gradient on these shirts them really make them stand out from the rest, and their color palettes are just very nice and evocative.

Assorted Graphic Tees!

These three don't have a common throughline aside from all being graphic tees, but I think they all have something to recommend them by. The Eelzebub Tee has a really gnarly, radiation-green design that is just really cool, giving an outfit something really eye-catching while still staying nice and simple.

The Green Tee is interesting because its big bold graphic lettering actually extend across the side and even a bit onto the back of your character, which gives it a really unique look I don't think any other clothes can replicate.

Finally, I just think the Mint Tee looks nice. Its color is pretty unique amongst shirts, and the white print design is decorative without being overbearing.

❥ Picks the edgiest weapons lmfao. Definitely a longsword user in Monster Hunter. Went blood build in Elden Ring

❥ *Sigh* he does consult reddit for his builds and is a min-maxer. I'm afraid Choso is a reddit user but in a 'I need a thorough understanding of this' kind of way

❥ Function over fashion: he dgaf if that helmet is as ugly as sin, it gives him +2 endurance and he's gonna wear it

❥ Lets you create his character & name them & everything.

❥ If you can't be present for the character creation portion, he'll make his character you! Definitely made you his dream guardian in Baldur's Gate 3 (which in the early access was called the Dream Lover, which is even cuter)

❥ Not pretentious at all about what is/isn't gaming, and plays all sorts of genres

❥ LOVES NINTENDO GAMES. Mario has a special place in his heart. DEFINITELY mains Shy Guy in Mario Kart

❥ Will literally cry and die if you play video games with him. You don't have to be good because he'll happily teach you. Just watching him play and asking about the details will make his day

❥ Definitely would do those cute Animal Crossing museum dates. Loves the relaxing, chill music so much. Despite his min-maxer approach to other games, he's absolutely not a time traveler in Animal Crossing. He's of the mindset that it ruins one of the core features of the game

❥ Stardew Valley? Stardew Valley. Honestly, I can't decide who he romanced first. My heart is telling me Leah, but chat pls advise

❥ Speaking of chat, you just know he's a fan of let's players. Always watching a YouTuber or Twitch Streamer. He's a Markiplier fan. You know it, just accept it

❥ Tbh that's a cute thought: Choso being a fan of the reader that's a small twitch streamer. Should that be a thing?

❥ Really good at singleplayer games. AWFUL at pvp

❥ He'll play something like Fortnite or Overwatch for Yuji, but needs to be hard carried because he only plays when someone asks him to. He can't stand how toxic those communities are, and doesn't want to socialize with strangers just to play a game

❥ He gets HEATED SO EASILY when people are toxic, especially if it's directed at Yuji or someone else he cares about. Definitely the type to step in and check other ppl when they're being toxic. Like those clips where it's a woman in a lobby and the dudes all start being sexist. Choso will not let that shit fly!

❥ On the note of Overwatch: the only character he can and will play is Mercy, and he just pockets Yuuji the whole time. Yuji has to beg him to heal/boost their teammates

Hello, I've been doing some research into 90s vs 80s aesthetics and fashions. I came across your work and it just looks amazing. May I ask you what you think the difference is? What is your thought process when making a 90s piece vs an 80s piece?

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy the art. As for your question, it's tricky since right now if someone makes 80s or 90s styled anything it's not about being historically accurate. It's about what 'feels' 80s or 90s to us now, usually rooted in whatever that era did uniquely. My work in particular is based in vaporwave aesthetics, which mixes many eras and styles so I'm not a great reference point for accuracy.

I have made a lot of art though so there are a couple of recurring trends I see. Here are 2 abstract designs I made, each inspired by Memphis Group aesthetics.

80s Style: This is the most defined as a singular aesthetic. Pastels (pink, purple, teal usually), neon signs that feel like they could be out of a Mall and some Art Deco elements as well.

90s Style: This era is a lot less defined. There are a few niches and styles but I haven't narrowed down any 1 big 'this is the 90s' as there was with the 80s. When I do 90s-y things I basically take 80s aesthetics, use more colors and exaggerate it with more child-like 90s Nickelodeon/MTV/etc graphics.

Y2K style and art pulls from 90s aesthetics too and that has a pretty well defined style but I haven't done much in it to post about. I hope this helps some.

Disillusion, an Oneiric Dungeon Crawler

Disillusion, and its sequel DisillusionST, are games I've been following intently, ever since I found out about them on a niche vaporwave forum three years ago.

The sequel is still in the works, but recently has garnered quite a bit of attention as Vinesauce played it on stream. Such attention is well deserved, as the dev's artstyle has come into his own, and the game showcases many extremly charming vingnettes reminiscent of early 2000s point and click games.

However, for this post, I'd like to focus on the original work. While Disillusion is much more primitive in every aspect compared to the demo of ST, it still manages to be a very worthwile experience.

As flawed as it might be because of it's janky combat and color-vomit art direction, the execution of it's main concepts is still very worthy of praise.

In the original game we play as Golem, an amnesiac soul climbing a tower with the intent of achieving either nirvana or reincarnation.

As it turns out, there are many wayward souls in the same journey. Most of them, however, have become lost and succumbed to insanity, as the more time one spends in the tower the more one's memories begin to meld with everyone else's.

In our travels we meet and become allies with Melpomene, the muse of tragedy. She asks for our help in defeating Mara, the buddhist version of the devil, who has perched itself on top and trapped all of the wayward souls. She intends to use the tower to transform itself into a god and remake the universe in it's image.

As for the game itself it is mostly a silly, psychedelic romp through a kaleidoscopic dungeon. Even though it's main themes are spiritual and introspective, the game is mostly meant to be fun and light.

For example, there is a sidequest where in you have to smuggle sweet corn for the obese monarch of a fish kingdom.

Because of this, the game can go from an off kilter-joke to something quite somber in the span of minutes.

It's definitely weird, but it adds to the experience in my opinion.

Wanting to truly immerse myself (and make some fun content), I asked the dev the recipe for one of the game's healing items, a PBJ sandwich. PBJ stands for pickled pork, beans, and jelly. It's supposed to cure poison.

I cooked it up and felt a bit poisoned afterwards.

Paradise Killer:

I just finished this one and am in the middle of writing my review on it. Painfully stylish with a killer vaporwave soundtrack this game oozes aesthetic. Kaizen Game Works understood the hauntology assignment and took it to the MAX. You are an investigator trying to solve an immortal god-like council’s murder in a dystopian society. You’ve returned to this gorgeous open world parasite paradise from your exile of 3 million days (about 8219 years)! If you’ve played Outer Wilds this is among that same vein. (And I will caution you, while not hard, the game relies on you wanting to just explore. It will provide hints but it won’t hold your hand.)

This is an Ace Attorney-esqe collectathon mixed with open world and exploration. There is no combat. Both the writing and the world are spectacular. Don’t deny yourself something this wonderful, because it is.

This has quickly risen among my gaming ranks as a favorite and it hits to being as close of a favorite as my number 2 suggestion…

Outer Wilds:

This is perhaps one of my favorite games of all time. I wanted to talk about this second because Outer Wilds has received more of the notoriety it deserves in recent times and I wanted PK to get the main spotlight. Don’t get it twisted though If it wasn’t for UpIsNotJump’s video (<— Spoilers) I would have never realized what I was missing. And I still think a lot of people don’t understand what they’re missing too. It is an absolute masterpiece. And seeing it getting released physically again is a god send. I want people to play this game. (And it’s DLC Echoes of The Eye)

No combat. You are a scientist exploring your local solar system in your spaceship in an open “universe” instead of an open world. The sun explodes every 22 minutes which sends your memories back in time. Again, I will caution you that the game relies on you wanting to explore. It will not direct you.

Eastward:

PC Switch Xbox

Too much exploring. Let’s reel it back with Eastward. A Zelda-like where you control an older man and a little girl with psychic powers in a post apocalyptic world. If you’re looking for those fun pixel games that pack that quirky feel this is it. A bit existential, a great sense of humor, and fantastic writing are all part of the Eastward package. (You startin’ to see a theme here? Ha ha)

All while boasting a seriously killer pixel soundtrack. The original Iron Carbine trailer for the Nintendo Direct had an immediate impact on me as a gamer. I knew this was a game I would fall in love with. Sometimes you just know when something is special. This game is beautifully pixelated and packed with lovingly crafted content. Puzzles are the right amount of challenging and there is so much fun side stuff to do. Including a Dragon Quest-esqe game inside the game! It also received DLC via Eastward Octopia! Which I also love.

Moon: A Remix RPG

I do play games with combat. I swear. Several of these games just don’t have it! (Ha!) This will perhaps be the hardest game to sell to you on this list. I have a soft spot for quirky games like this, but know that this was a PS1 Japanese exclusive game in the 90s. And it sure acts like it. Slow to start, weak tutorial, and doesn’t provide a ton of direction. This game was ported into English for the first time in 2020 and I love it. It is a trial and error experience though.

This cult classic is one of the games that inspired Undertale and when you play it becomes wildly apparent. I dare say it reminds me more of Undertale than its other main inspiration Earthbound. You are a little boy that’s been fallen into his video game and you have to save the souls of monsters the hero has killed using love. (Sound familiar?)

Light hearted and weird this game also has a great sense of humor as it pokes at classic RPG tropes. And that slow intro comes into play providing a unique perspective as you journey through the game befriending people. It won’t be for everyone, I would research this one before sinking the… $18.99 on the purchase. But I think it is worth experiencing if you love Undertale.

I think I’ve yakked enough. If folks like the post I’ll follow up with a part two with a little more genre variety! I wanted to the first post to include my top favorites. So. I hope there’s something in there that invigorates you the way these games did for me.

So I've been massively obsessed with listening to FNAF songs lately I'm definitely very mentally well about it, ah. anywAYYY

Music headcanons about what the egos listen to??? 😁 Feel free to do as many as you want to, but I'm most curious about Murdock, Illinois, engineer Mark, and Wilford. (Also, I have some idea of what's in ur brain with Dark, but any more details would be welcome~) (Also also, Y a n c y)

Murdock - Industrial and Aggrotech are his shit, but also very much into Power Metal and Rock, the heavier the better. Appreciates Classical and Jazz, though prefers songs that sound more brooding and ominous in both cases.

Illinois - Definitely listens to and enjoys all sorts of cultural folk songs and the like native to the places he visits in his travels. Indie, Blues, and Jazz round out his typical tastes. People who don't know him tend to assume he'll like Country music, but he can't say he cares much for it.

Wilford - Disco is a very obvious choice here and it is true, but Wilford's been around for quite a while and has an appreciation for pretty much all types of music. He does, however, have quite a strong fondness specifically for Electroswing.

Engineer - Listens to a lot of sub-genres of Electronic and EDM. Like Wilford, a big fan of Electroswing, and also likes Chiptune a lot. Will put on heavier music like Industrial when he's angry or frustrated and trying to work something out. If he gets too strung out, though, he'll find some sort of rain or - especially after the Wormhole Incident - heartbeat ambience to put on and go decompress. Preferably with the Captain nearby.

Yancy - Musicals is really on the nose but also so very apt. Also Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, and Doo-wop, considering the whole 'greaser' vibes he's got. Also likes some sub-genres of Rock and Alternative. Doesn't actively dislike any genre of music, even if it's something that isn't to his tastes. Boy just loves music too much.

Damien/Dark - Classical, Oldies, and some Blues and Jazz are all very obvious and fitting picks (all moony and lovesick), but only very close friends and family know that he also adores Metal, with Symphonic Metal being his favorite of the genre. You'd be hard-pressed to catch him listening to it, though, especially after the events of the Party. It reminds him a little too much of a certain someone who used to listen to and play it with him...

Bonus (cause his music taste jumped out at me):

Bing - Vaporwave and Chiptune are his favorites, but he likes almost all kinds of Electronic and EDM. Always surprises people when they find him listening to Industrial music and its sub-genres, of which Dark Electro is his go-to.

So we can have more information about the species of angel, (Type function, appearance of the wings, etc.) I wanted to make an OC angel, but we don't have much information about them.

I keep some vague for people to just add their own ideas to characters so they aren't bound to hard rules.

But some basic info-

All angel types have one set of white, light blue tipped wings and have conventional human eyes friendly forms.

Angels: Angels are sort of the average joes of the angel classes. Their kingdom is where most common humans end up living and their towns/cities are meant to reflect architecturally. Very much small-town energy. Their jobs are the most varied since their job is to tend to the needs of humans( and even angels) so things like bakers, cooks, delivery, maids, town mayors/city officials, carpenters, etc. if the town needs a role filled then an angel will be assigned to it! Angels true form are just humans but with wings

Archangels: Archangels typically have one of these two jobs. Being an arch guardian or a transporter/shepherd. Arch guardians watch over individuals or families down on earth, essentially acting as guardian angels (I just wanted to give em a different name), and protect. The second one is a transporter/shepherd and they pick up and drop off souls at the proper afterlife based on their death reports and the life they lived. They are essentially grim reapers or ferrymen. Archangels true form is a dragon and depending on how well they are with magic and age they have additional eyes on their body. Their kindgrom is the weirdest of them all as, to summarize it, looks very vaporwave/weirdcore. Usually, a human gets promoted to this class or the Angel class.

Principalities: Scholars, magicians, wizards, archivists etc basically anything that required high amounts of intelligence. Principalities angels value knowledge and truth above all else. Principalities true form is very nimbus-y in appearance and even in the more conventional form they have very textured and/or fluffy hair. Their kingdom is composed of many libraries and schools specializing in various fields of academia.

Virtues: Artists, writers, philosophers, architects, actors, singers, etc these angels embody everything that is beaufiul in humanity both physically,spiritually, and morality. Though, less importance has been placed on morality. Their true form is similar to angel's forms but they exclude a bright radiant light from their entire body and are extremely beautiful. Virues angels also have 4 wings similar to the Seraphim but are still tipped blue. Their kingdom is one of, if not, the most beautiful kingdoms with artistic beauty in even the smallest blade of grass to the grandest buildings.

Powers: Military branch of the angels. They protect Utopia and Earth from the forces of evil threatening them. Powers angels begin basic training from a young age and are divided into teams once they have mastered their fighting style. Melee, ranged, magic, healer, etc you basic RPG/DnD classes you get it. Other angel types can enlist themselves into the Powers branch even if they aren't natural born powers angels. They can master multiple types of combat but generally have one signature that they stick to. For powers angels that use weapons their weapon can be summoned at any time (unless fallen like Noel) and take form/adapt to the user. Powers angels true form are giant moving masked statues with wings that harden into steel.

Cherubim: Cherubim angels are the angels of nature in that everything that is living was made by them. Animals, plants, mountains, oceans, were all designed by them. Their kingdom is at one with nature with many of the buildings being built into or decorated with it. Their true form is a multi-headed beast hybrid.

Thrones: Lawmakers and work beside dominion angels, having a hand in everything to ensure it is running in perfect harmony. Their true form is (play the game and use process of elimination to find out!) Mostly "extinct" since Lucifer's fall. Remaining thrones angels that didn't rebel with Lucifer were absorbed into the dominion class.

Dominions: Dominion angels work(ed) alongside thrones angels to establish the law and order of the mortal and afterlife. The enforce the law and tasks to the other kingdoms that they and The Choir have decided upon. Their true form is (play the game and use process of elimination to find out!)
