Bruce Banner Pairings Masterlist 2
part one
a manic monday in the life of bruce banner (ao3) - agentsimmons bruce/tony T, 8k
Summary: Being a dad to so many kids, a hardworking scientist and the s.o. of someone high profile is bound to lead to stress overload sometimes. Thus, Bruce experiences a very manic Monday morning.
a physicist/part-time gladiator and a demi-god walk into a bar (ao3) - DrRJSB bruce/natasha M, 12k
Summary: Bruce Banner and Thor have just arrived back on Midgard after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. First on Bruce’s list is tracking down Natasha and finding out where they stand.
beauty and the beast (ao3) - Panda365 bruce/natasha, pepper/tony T, 47k
Summary: A few weeks after the battle of NY, the original 6 are adjusting to life at Avengers tower.
Through various missions and time off the clock, the team must put aside their differences to save others and each other from their own demons.
(This is a Bruce/Natasha centered story full of angst, comedy, and friendship. Be warned of potentially triggering topics of suicide, anxiety, and depression.)
by the light of all your bridges burning (ao3) - branwyn bruce/tony M, 39k
Summary: Bruce Banner is twelve years old. It’s not an easy age. For anyone.
Come lay with me, You're safe with me (ao3) - annunziatina tony/bruce M, 48k
Summary: In exchange for a military contract that would save his family from financial ruin, Tony Stark is forced to abandon his desire for love. But the reclusive scientist to whom Tony is promised is far from the army grunt he imagined. And maybe love isn't really out of reach.
cracks (ao3) - seekingsquake bruce/betty G, 6k
Summary: Bruce has never been able to take a breather. The team reminds him that he’s not on the run anymore.
electric feel (ao3) - manias bruce/thor E, 4k
Summary: Bruce Banner never thought he’d end up here, ever in his whole life or his wildest dreams would he had thought that he’d bed an actual god.
Fake (Date) It Til You Make It (ao3) - Blizzard_Fire bruce/clint M, 6k
Summary: ‘Hey Doc,’ Clint said one morning, strolling into the lab, ‘Can you date me?’ Bruce frowned up at him. ‘Why?’ ‘To fuck with Tony, mainly.'
Bruce and Clint start fake-dating to mess with the others. But then it becomes a question of how long they can keep this up, and maybe their “dates” aren’t quite so platonic anymore…
figure drawing (ao3) - thingswithwings bruce/steve E, 20k
Summary: When he gets back to New York, Steve only lasts five days living in Williamsburg before he packs up again and heads, shamefaced, to Stark Tower. The people are nice enough, but they’re a kind of rich that Steve doesn’t know how to deal with, and the neighborhood is crowded and strange, with too many eyes on him all the time.
his true colors (ao3) - Nonymos bruce/loki, bruce/clint E, 103k
Summary: The battle of New York was a turning point for the entire planet – but especially so for Bruce Banner. This is a unique chance for him to find the Hulk a place in this world. It is a staggering hope, but unrealistic as it sounds, it might just come true.
And then his hesitant plan turns out to be too successful. Everyone including the Avengers apparently expect the Hulk to take his turn in the spotlight. But the more Hulk thrives, the more Bruce withers, and nobody seems to notice or care. When Loki extends a hand to him, he is fully aware it is a trick – but he has got nothing else to hold onto.
The Avengers realize just a bit too late how royally they screwed up. The sharp-sighted, ever-watching Hawkeye cannot blame himself enough for not having seen this disaster coming. Can they still be saved from Banner ?
Do they even deserve it ?
(The story is set right after the 2012 Avengers movie with slight EMH dynamics thrown in the middle.)
leanover (ao3) - ballantine thor/bruce G, 6k
Summary: After Wakanda, Thor sleeps sixteen hours a day and Bruce contemplates what it takes to be a person in a broken world.
liar, liar, giant purple pants on fire (ao3) - jdphoenix bruce/darcy G, 4k
Summary: The Hulk tells a lie. Things go downhill from there.
little light of love (ao3) - thebatman06 bruce/thor, patricia/jennifer, erik/t’challa G, 9k
Summary: This is based off of a tumblr post that talks of thor whisking bruce away from earth. It’s set after both films: Thor (2011) and Hulk (2003)
My Unshaped Form (ao3) - atrata bruce/natasha E, 26k
Summary: Of all the people they could have sent, they send Bruce Banner. In his defense, he seems to realize he has no chance of finding her.
news flash (ao3) -robofruit bruce/thor N/R, 31k
Summary: Thor and Bruce have found love in each other, but when the news gets released, the public isn’t too thrilled about their relationship.
smashing is more fun with friends (ao3) - TunaFishChris bruce/natasha T, 8k
Summary: Or, 5 Times the Hulk helped/saved/hung out with an Avenger, and one time they saved him.
Can be read as a stand-alone, but is also takes place after “The Wisdom of Children.”
sun’s getting low (ao3) - mrstater bruce/natasha T, 65k
Summary: SHIELD’s collapse leaves Natasha uncertain of her place in the world. While Bruce enjoys life at Avengers Tower, he continues to doubt whether he’s more an asset than a liability to the team. Can they learn to trust each other–and themselves–enough to help each other find what they’re looking for?
these walls are paper thin (ao3) - IamShadow21 bruce/betty T, 13k
Summary: When most people think of Bruce Banner and The Hulk, they think of it as an either/or situation and assume that it’s easy to tell who they’re face to face with.
Most people are wrong.
Wade In Your Water (ao3) - especiallythezefronposter tony/bruce M, 62k
Summary: In 1984, Bruce Banner is reported killed in action after a bomb test gone wrong. A month later, he returns to Caltech university to finish up his thesis.

bookworm-forever-always said: Im curious…..why do you think this version of the Animorphs wont accept the responsiblity when their teenage versions do?
It’s true: in this AU, I take a pretty unflattering view of the 23-year-old Animorphs, especially Jake and Tobias. There were a couple different reasons I decided to do that. The super-practical boring reasons: I didn’t want to do a note-for-note repeat either of canon or of my earlier adult AU, and I thought that (since it’s fairly realistic for a set of 20somethings to be low in group coherence) that could be an excuse for me to speculate about what would happen if the Animorphs didn’t answer the call.
The more complex reasons? The first is that, as someone who is very close to that age herself (and who has several dozen peers also close to that age) I tend to see a lot of the good, the bad, the ugly, the brilliant, and the shockingly entitled at that age. If I had to characterize this age from my limited range of experiences, I would call it one of simultaneous inappropriate certainty and fake it ‘til you make it. There are a lot of people my age who show really firm convictions that their political views, personal philosophies, understandings of world systems, and insight into human nature have all crystalized, to the point where they don’t anticipate experiencing any ethical or philosophical shifts at any point from here on out. Simultaneously, there’s what Tumblr calls the “how to adult” effect where people at this age are desperately trying to figure out who to marry, whether to have kids, what jobs they want and how to get those jobs, where to live, what standard of living they can and should have, etc. Most of us have figured out that the whole “follow your dreams and it’ll all work out” line of advice leaves its adherents with useless college degrees and no job prospects, but most of us are also not sure what the alternatives are. Ergo, that all struck me as a perfect storm for Animorphs of that age to be more concerned with keeping themselves alive than with haring off on some uncertain adventure. The 13-year-old Animorphs are young enough that they genuinely don’t know what they’re getting themselves into; my headcanon is that the 33-year-old Animorphs are old enough to be duty-bound to protect others over themselves. We 23-year-olds are often so busy trying to figure out the difference between dish soap and dish detergent we have a tendency to be atrociously bad at listening when someone tells us “dude, you need to change.”
The final reason that I went cynical with that particular ask was out of a desire to buck the trend in fan fiction of (and again I’m being super-cynical here) bringing the mountain to Mohammed if Mohammed can’t go to the mountain when it comes to self-insert fan fiction. What I mean by that is that there’s this significant tendency to take works with unfamiliar settings and to recast them in more-familiar settings in fan fiction. For instance, there are lots of stories where characters have superpowers (Avatar, X-Men, Teen Wolf, etc.) with tons of fic AUs that imagine the characters without superpowers, stories with primarily business settings and middle adult characters (Avengers, Mercy Thompson, Angel, etc.) with tons of fic AUs that imagine the characters as young adults in high school or college, stories that either started out as or have become historical fiction (Animorphs, Harry Potter, The Book Thief, etc.) whose fandoms have dozens of modern AUs. What’s striking, however, is that it’s very rare to see any of these AUs the other way around—people rarely write versions of Teen Wolf set in the 1990s, or imagine that the characters of Harry Potter are middle-aged businesspeople. Sherlock and Harry Potter get American AUs on the American-run AO3; if Buffy and X-Men get British AUs then I haven’t seen them on AO3. It’s a natural human impulse to ask “what if the characters came to my setting?”—and an equally natural impulse to make those beloved individuals excel in that setting. After all, you never see college AUs where characters fail all their classes, or high school AUs where the protagonists become catty or bullying, just like there’s no coffee shop AU on the planet that ends with the coffee shop going out of business the way 90% of food-and-beverage startups do within the first year. Ergo, I wanted to fight against that tendency to self-insert many fans’ settings to a different cast of characters and then have the characters miraculously excel to a one when dropped into that new setting.
#fan fiction#animorphs aus#writing meta#that was probably WAY MORE OF AN ANSWER than you were hoping for#sorry i talk a lot#millennial bashing#fandom#seriously tho#has anyone seen a story where the avengers get imagined as kids?#or where an american-set story gets moved out of the u.s.?

Miss American Pie
Chapter Three: Bye Bye
Warning: This series features a romantic Yelena Belova x Fem!Reader relationship.
Summary: After freeing the widows from chemical subjugation and destroying the red room, you and Yelena finally settle down.
Part 1 & Part 2
The widows welcome you, the ones you trained with and the ones you didn’t. After Dreykov was gone and you had nothing but time. Melina and Alexei go to work on replicating the antidote. Creating enough to free all chemically subjugated agents.
It’ll take time. But the more you free the more are willing to help. Some of the widows just leave once they are given freedom. Ready to wash their hands of all of this and start living. You understand that more than anything. Eventually the operation is running on such a large scale they hardly need you at all.
Natasha hasn’t reached out since you separated after the red room. Probably off with the Avengers trying to save the world again. No one blames her, for her inability to be still. Not even Yelena.
“So,” you plop down on the couch beside Yelena. “What’s the plan now?”
“I don’t know.” She admits, staring up at the ceiling. “To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to make it this far.”
“Yeah.” You tug at a loose strand of her dirty blonde hair. “That makes two of us.”
“We could pretend to be normal.” Yelena offers. “What would a normal person do?”
“Don’t know,” you shrug. “I’ve never been one.”
“Maybe...settle down.” Yelena’s eyes are far away.
“Would you have wanted to-“ You break off, trying to sort out the words. “I mean if you could…would you have a baby?”
She raises her brows, “I never thought about it.” A long pause. “I wouldn’t know how to be a mother.”
Neither would you. You’ll never be right. Whatever that is, was, or might have been. Always a little too guarded and rough around the edges. “You never waste time thinking about things you can’t have.” You sink farther into the cushions, her pinky skates over your own. Taking the invitation you twine your fingers together.
“I thought about you.” She lowers her eyes to the coffee table. “Everyday. Until I couldn’t anymore.”
“I-“
“The red room took that from me too.”
You shake your head at her. “They can never take anything from you or anyone else ever again,” you whisper. “And to be clear you can have me.”
A laugh rumbles out of her chest at the news. “I can?”
“I mean if you still want me.” You tease, “I know that the chase is half the fun for you. So I can keep on running. I’m one foot out the door-“
“I am tired of running.” Yelena murmurs, curling up against your side.
“Me too.” Your chin rests atop her head.
“Then stop doing it!” She scolds, slapping your arm playfully in retaliation.
“I will if you will.” You know why she runs. The same reason you do. Because you’re afraid. That maybe some parts of you are too broken to love.
She mulls it over for a moment. “Truce. I don’t run. You don’t run.”
“Deal.” You give her fingers a squeeze.
“Except into the face of danger.” She clarifies, only half kidding. “Then we run, straight ahead.” Yelena motions with her free hand. “But together.”
“Together.” You agree, with a soft smile.
“We could get a dog.” The tone of her voice tells you that she is invested in the idea.
“I wouldn’t mind a dog.” You prop your feet up on the coffee table.
Yelena hates anything but a straight answer. Still feeling the need to convince you, she presents the facts. “Dogs are really cool! They have special powers.”
You chuckle, “dogs do not have powers.”
“Yes!” Yelena argues, “they can predict natural disasters and judge character.”
“That’s a special power?” You quip, “I can do that too.”
She grumbles under her breath.
“I want one.” You sigh. Feeling all the tension leave her body.
“I knew you did.” She smiles, contently.
———————————————————————
Dogs might have powers, but the only thing your puppy currently seems to posses is the ability to chew up anything in her path.
“Yelena have you seen my-“ you pause, taking in the scene before you, “shoes.”
“Don’t be angry,” Yelena holds up a hand.
The tiny puppy beside her squeaks, not quite a bark yet. Your demolished sneaker tumbling to the ground.
“What happened?” You run both hands over your face.
She sweeps the dog into her arms. “I told Fanny we could go for a walk once you got out of the shower. She was excited, Y/N! She was trying to bring your shoes to you. But she got distracted, only a little.”
“A little?” You can’t help but smile.
“Look at this face,” Yelena waves Fanny’s paw at you. “You can’t be mad at this face. Tell her girl. Say, you can’t be mad at me Mom, I’m trying my best.” She brings the dog closer.
You raise a hand to pet Fanny lightly. Yelena’s right of course, there is no being mad at that face. “Let me find a pair of shoes that isn’t mangled. Then we’ll go for a walk.”
“I’ll wait with Fanny.”
“Of course you will.” You retreat to your bedroom. Rummaging through the closet in search of some sort of footwear. You’d settle for slippers at this point. Fanny joins you after a moment. Nuzzling at your ankle as she whines.
It’s not everyday that she follows you, she is Yelena’s dog and never lets you forget it. “You’re really excited aren’t you?” More whining. You scoop Fanny up. “I’m coming, I’m coming.”
You huff, finally locating a pair of sandals. Slipping them on quickly so you can return to Yelena and gloat about being Fanny’s favorite. “Hey baby, I don’t know what you did, but look.” You smile, gazing up as you present the dog…to an empty room. That’s odd. Maybe she’s waiting outside.
You grab the leash Yelena abandoned on the countertop, securing it to Fanny’s collar. “Come on girl. Let’s go find Mama. Where’s Mama?”
Fanny follows you out the door, onto the walkway.
“Yelena?”
Nothing.
You scan the area, no sign of her. “Ok…” Back into the house, you check the bathroom next.
“Yelena!” You shout, knowing you’ll feel stupid once she replies. But she doesn’t.
A buzzing from the cell phone in your back pocket draws your attention. You set Fanny down gently, accepting the call and moving the device up to your ear. “Alexei?”
“Y/N! Oh thank god!” His voice booms through the speaker.
“Are you ok?” You ask immediately. Leaning down to grab the television remote, turning to channel thirteen, still broadcasting it’s usual gameshow.
“I am alone.” He cries through the speaker. “Melina left me with her pigs.”
“What do you mean she left you?” Something is very wrong.
“She disappeared.” He says somberly, “didn’t even say goodbye. I don’t know what I did to deserve this.” The dramatic monologue continues. “I give her back rub every night and then-“
“No,” you cut him off. “Absolutely not.” Under no circumstance is he going to tell you what happens next.
“I have made mistakes, but this! This is cruel.” Alexei, clearly distraught begins cursing in Russian.
“Alexei, I know you’re upset but I need you to listen.”
“What?” He asks. “What is it?”
“Yelena is gone too.” You inform him. Your eyes flicker over the words at the bottom of your tv screen. “People disappeared all over the world.”
You fall back onto the couch, feeling all the air leave your lungs.
More hysteria on the other end of the line. “What are we going to do?”
“I’m gonna find Natasha. Maybe she knows something.” Assuming that Natasha is still here.
“What about me?”
“Come to Ohio. You can dog sit.” You offer, familiar numbness seeps into your limbs.
“I have nine pigs!” Alexei shouts back.
“We have a backyard, don’t worry.” You hang up before he has a chance to argue.
You return to the call screen. Scrolling to find a different contact. Pressing the dial button beside her name.
It rings. And rings. And rings. “Hello.”
“Natasha,” you let out the breath you’ve been holding. “What the hell happened?”
——————————————————————
The Avengers fortress isn’t exactly how you imagined. Not very homey.
You park your car in the lot. Removing your keys from the ignition and stowing them in your back pocket. The clear rectangular keychain with a picture of you and Yelena inside sticks out. Clinking when you round the vehicle to retrieve Fanny from the passenger seat. “Come on, Fanny.”
She wags her tail, waiting expectantly to be carried.
“You’re spoiled, you know.” You sigh, taking the puppy into your arms and closing the door behind you.
The front gate is open but Natasha takes a moment to locate. She cut her hair up to her shoulders, dyed it blonde. “Hello stranger.”
“You got a dog.” She says, in greeting.
“Yeah.” You reply, not in the mood for small talk. “It was Yelena’s idea.”
“I knew she’d sucker you into that.”
“It’s not like she could make me do anything I didn’t want to.” Your finger slides along the edge of the metal table Natasha’s seated behind.
She barks a laugh, “that’s a lie.”
Maybe so. “Nice place you’ve got here.”
“It’s not mine.”
“Still cool. I like the hair too,” you motion toward her blonde locks.
“That’s not really mine either, is it?” She remarks.
“Is anything ever really ours?”
“No.” She frowns. “I guess not.”
“What happened?” You ask again.
“It’s a long story,” Nat crosses both arms over her chest. “You might want to take a seat.”
You clear your throat, pulling out the chair beside her. Fanny curls up in your lap, curious eyes darting about every now and then. You tell yourself it’s because she’s in a new place, but part of you knows, she’s looking for Yelena.
Natasha stares down at her hands. “Have you ever heard of infinity stones?”
You shake your head. “Must be an avenger thing.”
“There were six of them, scattered all over the galaxy. If a person has all six they can use them in anyway they choose. Thanos, used them to eliminate half of all living creatures.”
“Are you the only one left?” You lean in.
“No.” She sniffs, blinking away tears. “There’s others.”
“So where are they?” The place looks abandoned. “Why aren’t you charging into battle?”
“Because we lost. Probably the worst we’ve ever lost.” Natasha clenches her jaw. “By the time we found Thanos again he already destroyed the stones.”
“We’ll try again.” You decide immediately. This isn’t over.
“Will we?” Natasha shakes her head with a smirk.
“If she was gone for good I would know it.” You tell her truthfully. “I would feel it, in my heart and I don’t.”
“You didn’t see it happen. I saw him snap his fingers and-“
You lay your hand over hers, squeezing tight.
“Did you see her go?” She asks, voice just above a whisper. “Yelena. Did you see her?”
“No.” You confess, “I didn’t see.”
Natasha closes her eyes. “That’s why you still have hope.”
“Look maybe you’re right.” You shrug, “even so, now seems like a really stupid time to give up.”
The corner of her mouth twitches. “What’s the dog’s name?”
“Fanny.” You inform her.
“Come on.” She rolls her blue eyes. “You’re kidding right? Tell me you didn’t actually name a dog after one of those stupid aliases Rick made me.”
“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.”
“I guess a dog’s better than a pig.” Natasha reasons. “Are they still here?”
“Not Melina.” You break the news quickly. Like tearing off a bandage. “But Alexei and all nine of her pigs are on their way to our house in Ohio.”
“Sounds crowded.”
“Always room for one more.”
——————————————————————
You stay like that for a long time. Hopeful. Sure that this was all some nightmare that you could wake up from; fight your way out of.
And then five years passed.
Now you come to see Natasha twice a month, just to check in. Alexei and his pigs have taken up permanent residency in the home you bought with Yelena. As for you, you bounce around. Never staying in one place too long.
“Any news?” You wonder, leaning against the doorframe of Natasha’s meeting room.
“No.” She bites out. Kicking her foot up on the desk. “You should move on.”
“Is that what you call this?” You flick your wrist in her direction. “Crying into a peanut butter sandwich.”
“It’s therapeutic.” She waves the bread at you. Tears welled up in her eyes. “You should try it sometime.”
“Nah.” You take a seat, reaching across to make a sandwich of your own. “It’s not the sandwich’s fault.”
“Am I interrupting the pity party?” Steve says, announcing his presence. Captain America is as self righteous as ever.
“Didn’t you grieve for a century over a girl you kissed one time?” You arch a brow at him, licking wayward peanut butter from the pad of your thumb. “Five years is just a drop in the bucket.”
Steve purses his lips, you have a point. “It wasn’t a century.”
“Close enough.” You mumble around a mouthful of your dinner.
“Want a bite?” Natasha offers half of her sandwich to him.
“No thanks.” He takes a step closer. “I’d offer to make you a real dinner, but already look pretty miserable. Where’s your dog?”
“Visiting her granddad.” Everyone and their mother loves that damn dog.
“Oh yeah, my great adversary.” How could he ever forget. “Is he still wearing that stupid suit?”
“I’m pretty sure the suits are stowed away. But it’s been a while since I’ve been there.” Your mind wanders to the vest. The one Natasha returned to you after Yelena was gone. The one you retired because it doesn’t smell like her anymore. Nothing does.
Most things remain untouched in the Ohio house. Your pictures. Your memories. Your plans. You can’t get rid of them. Can’t stomach being around them either.
Someone, a man, alerts the security cameras, pounding on the front door. “Hello? Is anyone home? Hello! Can you hear me?”
“How old is this video?” Steve asks, cocking his head to the side.
“It’s the front gate.” Natasha breathes, enlarging the image.
“Do we know him?” You squint at the man in question.
“It’s me, Scott Lang, Antman. I met you guys at the airport in Germany a few years ago. I had a mask on, you probably wouldn’t recognize me.” He rambles on.
Natasha presses the access panel, opening the gate.
You straighten yourselves out, before he makes it down the long hallway into the common room.
Scott paces, a lot. Nervously rubbing his hands together.
“Scott.” Steve finally cut in. “Are you ok?”
“Have any of you ever studied quantum physics?”
“Only to make conversation.” Nat says, voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Ok. Alright so, five years ago. Right before Thanos. I was in the quantum realm. The quantum realm is like it’s own little microscopic universe. To get in there you have to be incredibly small. Hope, she’s my uh-“ he trails off. “She was my…she was- she was supposed to pull me out. And then Thanos happened and I got stuck in there.”
“I’m sorry that must have been a long five years.” Natasha apologies.
“That’s the thing, for me it wasn’t.” Scott replies. “It was five hours.”
“What a trip.” You snort, absently toying with your belt loop.
“The rules of time are different there. See everything is unpredictable.” He explains, getting distracted by the food in your hand. “Are you gonna finish that?”
“I guess not.” You hold it out to him.
He accepts, gratefully stuffing the bread into his mouth.
“Scott! What are you talking about?” Steve demands.
“So what I’m saying is time works differently in the quantum realm. The only problem is we don’t have a way to navigate it. But if we did, if we could somehow control the chaos; to enter the quantum realm at a certain point in time and exit at another point in time…like,” Scott locks eyes with you then. “Like before Thanos.”
You nod.
“Are you talking about a time machine?” Steve sighs, running a hand over his tense forehead.
“No. No of course not. Not like a time machine but like a…yeah.” There’s no other word for it. “Like a time machine. I know it’s crazy. But I can’t stop thinking about it! There gotta be some way.”
“Scott,” Natasha calls his attention. “I get emails from a raccoon. So nothing sounds crazy to me anymore.”
“So who do we talk to about this?” His eyes flicker between the three of you.
“Don’t look at me.” You hold both hands up. “That’s way above my pay grade.”

Remember Me
Chapter 1
Summary: While cleaning up the timelines that he broke, Loki meets and inevitably loses the one person that's understood him in life. But he's not losing you without a fight
A/N: Beta'd by @edgyvege
Warnings: Mentions of death
Word Count: 1619
Happy reading!
It’s a quiet evening, and the Avengers that lived in the compound decided to take advantage of the rainy evening and have a movie night. Steve had called Tony over, who had brought Peter with him. The father and son duo has stopped on the way from the city to pick up a plethora of unhealthy snacks, including everyone’s favorite chips and candies.
They’re currently all settled in the common room watching She-Ra. Peter’s head is resing on Tony’s shoulder, Thor is snuggled up to Bruce, Natasha and Clint are sitting in the same recliner, Wanda and Vision are on one side of the love seat, Steve on the other side of Tony, Bucky and Sam sitting on the floor behind the coffee table.
They’re at the part where Adora is being stalked by Shadow Weaver in Mystacor, when the TV suddenly flickers, the audio warping. There’s a buzzing sound behind them closer to the kitchenette.
Everyone straightens in their seats, suddenly on alert.
“Friday,” Tony barks, pushing Peter behind him, “Lights.”
The lights cut on and everyone in the room watches as the air seems to distort and glow, similarly to when the sun beats down on the pavement, before a blonde man walks out with a cuffed and collared Loki behind him.
Every person in the room jumps into a defensive stance, some already with weapons that are always stashed and hidden throughout the compound, and each ready to fight at a moment’s notice.
Thor leaps over the couch and calls his hammer to him in one swift movement, but he doesn’t look frightened or angry.
He just looks… Mournful.
“Loki?” He says with apprehension, tilting his head.
It looks like Loki, and he’s certainly bound the way Loki should be if he were up to no good. But he watched Loki die. He watched Thanos crush the life out of him and toss him to the floor of that ship as if he were a worthless piece of balled up paper.
The blonde man holds up his hands in front of himself, as if to signal that they’re not here to cause any harm.
“Please, allow me to explain why we are here before this turns ugly.” The stranger pleads.
Thor looks back to his team, making eye contact with Tony and Steve.
They look apprehensive, and Tony has an iron grip on his kid, but Steve nods carefully.
Thor turns back to the stranger and nods, but his focus is mainly on Loki, “Go ahead.”
The man drops his hands and pockets them before beginning his story, “Okay. My name is Mobius, and I am a Timekeeper. My job, like Thor is probably aware, is to keep the timelines safe, intact, and to keep them from ever intersecting. When the Avengers used the Pym Particles to go back in time and retrieve the Infinity Stones; Stark, Rogers, Banner, and Lang went back to the Battle of New York in 2012. When they infiltrated the 2012 Avengers to get a hold of the tesseract, they made an error that caused the tesseract to fall into the hands of that Loki.”
Thor’s brows shot up to his hairline and he whipped around to look at Tony, “What? Why was I not informed of this?”
Now it’s Tony’s turn to hold his hands up, “Okay, hey. We didn’t have time to focus on that, and you were still grieving your brother. It would not have done anyone any good to bring it up while we were still in the fight of our lives.”
“And what about after?” He barks.
“While I agree this is something you all should discuss, I respectfully ask that you do that later,” Mobius interrupts, “I have places to be.”
Thor huffs and gives Tony one last glare before he turns back to the two other men.
“Right, anyways. When Loki took the tesseract and escaped, he broke that timeline. It caused multiple branches off of it,” He starts to take a step forward to the group, but decides against it when Thor’s nostrils flare, “We tracked him down, arrested him, and brought him into custody. He was given the option of life in prison or parole if he agreed to help us fix the timeline and erase the others. And I’m sure you can imagine what he chose.”
“I mean, there wasn’t much of a choice, was there?” Loki mumbles.
“Do you mind?” Mobius mumbles back, then turns to finish his story, “Through several months of helping us, Loki has proved himself to be, well, no longer a universal threat.”
“How do we know you aren’t under some spell of his?” Natasha asks, “Or working with him?”
“You don’t,” Mobius shrugs, “But he does know everything that has happened to him and those around him up until his final death. He was given the choice of choosing where he wanted to go at his time of being released, and I believe it says something for him to choose here.”
“Not much, actually. He’s manipulative.” Steve chimes in.
Mobius holds a finger up, “That he is. But unlike before, he has a lot more to lose this time.”
Thor crosses his arms, “And what would that be?”

You hum as you stock the shelves with the new shipment of books you just received.
It’s a nice day out. Mid April, the trees and flowers are blooming, and it’s finally nice enough outside to leave windows open. The mini fan is running on the counter where the register is, and the music is flowing quietly throughout your shop.
A very pleasant day, indeed.
You hear the windchimes attached to the shop door tinkle brightly, and you call over your shoulder as you finish placing the last few books, “Welcome! I’ll be right with you!”
When you’re finished, you grab the now empty cardboard box and use your pocket knife to break it down as you walk back to the front of the small store.
When you look up, a tall man with dark hair and a black suit is standing by the register, hands in his pockets. He’s incredibly handsome and as your eyes scan his features, you can’t help but feel like you have seen him before.
“Hi! How can I help you?” You ask, tossing the now flattened box onto a pile of others before walking behind the counter.
The man looks at you, tearing his gaze from a picture you had behind the counter, and his eyes meet yours. For the briefest of moments, you think you see grief flash across his emerald eyes. But as quick as you think you saw it, it's gone.
“Hello,” He greets, his voice satiny smooth, “A friend of mine recommended a book, and I was wondering if you could help me get my hands on a copy.”
“Sure!” You lean against the counter and fold your hands, “What’s it called?”
“I believe it’s called Norse Mythology, written by a Neil Gaiman.”
Your eyes light up and you push off your elbows to stand, “That’s my favorite book! Your friend must have amazing taste!” You wink.
He nods, eyes never leaving you, “I like to think so.”
“I definitely have it! Can’t really consider myself a good bookstore owner if I don’t keep my favorite books in stock, follow me.” You walk out from behind the counter and wave the handsome man to follow you. You know exactly where to go, and weave expertly between the shelves of your small shop. You finally come to a halt and reach down to grab the book, handing it to him, “Here you are.”
He takes the book from you and offers a kind smile and he turns it over in his hands, reading the back, “Thank you.”
“Of course, let’s go get you checked out,” You smile, staring at the handsome stranger before you realize what you’re doing.
The two of you walk back to the front of the store, and he lays the book down for you to scan it.
You take another look at him, and you’re not sure what possesses you to say it. You later account it to having been alone for so long.
“Actually- Here...” You lean down under the counter where you have your own stash of books, and grab your own copy of Norse Mythology. You stand back up and place it in front of him, “Why don’t you borrow my copy? I know it’s not as pretty as a new one, but if you don’t like it, you won’t have wasted the money. If you do like it, we can talk about it. Either way, you’ll have to return it,” You look down to the countertop before bringing your eyes to meet him once more, “And I can see you again.”
A beautifully sweet smile spreads across the man’s face. His eyes flicker down, noticing that you’re picking at your nails; it’s your nervous habit. He places a hand on the worn paperback book, “Lovely. Sounds like a plan to me. Shall we say next week, this time?”
Your smile brightens considerably, and you feel butterflies come to life in your belly, “See you then.”
He bends at the waist, bowing slightly, and turns to leave. You watch as his slender hand grabs the door knob, when a thought occurs to you.
“Wait!” You shout, reaching out your hand.
He stops dead in his tracks and turns back to you, an eyebrow quirked.
“What’s your name?”
He stiffens slightly. It’s so subtle that you barely notice it, but you do. Finally, a soft look adorns the man’s handsome features, and he looks a little sad. But he still answers.
“Loki.”

blanket kick
précis— Peter's not the suave man he would hope to be in front of his crush. instead, he's a blushing mess that haunts his memories and causes him to take out his frustrations on his blanket. luckily, you prefer cherry cheeks over smooth lines any day.
pairing— Peter Parker x enhanced!maximoff!reader
a/n— this is my first standalone written story and my first time writing for marvel! i hope you guys enjoy thisss<3 i'm also open to creating drabbles to continue this if anyone's interested????! pls enjoy and pls comment and let me know ur thoughts!!!
there are many ways to describe Peter Parker, but none could ever wholly capture the true essence of the boy
besides the obvious stuff,, his intelligence , his insanely good looks , his teenage awkwardness,,
it was a hard feat to string along words to describe the way he carries himself , the way he is with others , the way his heart loves with the same ability a sponge soaks up water and soap
Peter's had crushes before
perhaps more than he'd like to admit
(can't blame the boy, who gave Ty Lee the right be that cute!?)
but when he sees her, his heart begins to swell and suddenly, he forgets how to breathe..
or how to think... talk. y'know normal human stuff
in all honesty, Peter has tried his absolute hardest to block out their first meeting from his memories
he doesn't regret meeting her, of course not! never would he even repent that embarrassingly wonderful day
he only wishes it would've gone a little differently
let's set the scene, shall we?
the sun was shining brightly, the sky was a Carolina blue, the clouds were the prettiest porcelain color, rimmed with lace
Peter was riding in an awfully silent car that Happy was driving to the airport. despite being terrified of what's to come,, the fight Mr. Stark had recruited him for,, the boy was thoroughly enjoying this adventure.
the car came to a stop, which did little for Peter's nerves. he gathered his courage before stepping out, eyes squinting at the brightness of the yellow sun. once his eyes adjusted, they landed on the prettiest head of hair he had ever seen
(although he did think the same for Hermione Granger)
Peter had never been on a plane before that day. but even then, his sparkling eyes stayed trained on her,, completely ignoring the brilliant private jet behind her
"oh? Happy, i thought it was just us?" her voice made Peter's ears burn. he swallowed thickly. you blinked at Peter, curious but also intrigued , you smiled.
to which Peter choked. on air. your eyebrows furrowed in worry.
"a-are you okay?"
"god, kid, get ahold of yourself."
"i-i'm okay! it's– i'm– i'm fine!" Peter quickly stuttered out.
"well, Yn, this is– uh,, what's your name again?" Happy turned towards the boy who's cheeks were now redder than a firetruck.
"oh! i'm Peter– Peter Parker. it's nice to meet you- not that i don't know you. well i don't, y'know not personally. but like from the news.. not that i believe the news! they're awful to you, but i mean i guess i do sometimes– but never about what they say about you–"
"i'm Yn Maximoff. it's nice to meet you too, Peter." you cut him off before Happy strangled the cute boy. you had an amused smile
he was cute
finally getting on the plane, Peter had hoped he would be able to sit far away from you and wallow in his embarrassment,
maybe sneak a glance or two.. imagine a couple of scenarios where he wasn't a doofus,
but that's not quite what happened.
after witnessing just how much the new kids was able to ramble,, Happy was not about to spend a whole ass plane ride remotely close to him
so he took it upon himself to make the kiddies sit together.. much to Peter's dismay.
like!!? did Happy not see how Peter crashed and burned in font of you?!
you, on the other hand,, had the opposite reaction.
being the youngest avenger, you don't get to be around people your age too much,, which isn't something you're complaining about!!
you totally made the decision to be an avenger and you happily welcomed the consequences..
that didn't mean you didn't get lonely at times. especially now with the accords and the team breaking up., things got a whole lot more lonely
your sister, Wanda, had made her choice to leave the compound. you completely understood why, but a part of you had hoped she would've taken you with her
although, staying at the compound did ensure your safety.
it was a weird time for the avenger's , it felt wrong for you to say some of your teammates were criminals
it left a sour taste in your mouth
you glanced from the window seat to see Peter nervously wringing his fingers. you frowned.
"are you okay?" you asked, gently. Peter's eyes widened and his heart jumped to his throat. he wanted to say something, something cool or aloof, something that would make up for his ranting earlier
"i've never been on a plane before." Peter squeaked out. he dropped his shoulders, rolling his eyes at himself. that was the highest pitch he had ever heard his voice. you took in his clearly anxious posture.
"lets switch seats? maybe looking out the window will help you." you stated. before Peter could quickly shake his head, because how rude would it be of him to take your seat?, you were already stood up.
"oh god!" Peter breathed. he quickly shifted over to the seat you once occupied. he wanted to put up more of a fight, but the way you were swaying due to the turbulence, made his palms sweat in fear for your safety.
"you, like, swing from buildings and stuff, right?" you asked. he turned to you with a nod. "are you afraid of heights? or do you just not like planes?"
oh god. oh. no. you thought– you thought he was scared of being on the plane. Peter wanted to shrink in a hole and hide. you probably thought he was such a baby! that he could handle swinging from hundreds of feet in the air, but a plane is where he drew the line?
but what else is he supposed to say? 'oh, no! it's not the plane I'm scared of. it's just your beautiful smile and the way you smell like cocoa that gets me sweating'
wtf.
that was so wrong in so many ways.
"um, no, no. i'm okay, just– just a little nervous, is all." Peter tried to force out a chuckle. but it come out more like a cough. you mouth formed an 'o.'
"ohh, okay." you paused before your eyes lit up. "how about we play a game? to distract you?"
"o– okay.."
"can you talk with spiders?" Peter lifted his eyes from looking at his hands hovering above yours,; he let out a much more relaxed laugh than earlier.
you took advantage of his distraction to swiftly bring your palm from underneath his and slap the top of Peter's hand. he jumped.
"ouch!" he playfully pouted. you eyes glanced down at his lips. you giggled nervously. your hand went to hover over his, him now being the one to do the slapping. "of course i can't talk to spiders! i– i feel like i should probably be able to shape-shift into a spider in order for that to happen, y'know?"
you nodded thoughtfully. "that's true.. you didn't hear this from me, but i heard there's an Ant-Man going around." Peter looked at you with wide eyes.
"no way! that's crazy! does he like turn into an ant?" you bumped his hand with yours in order to get his attention back to the game. his hand burned at the feeling
"i don't know-" you said in a singsong tone. "it's just what's being said around the compound." you quickly slid your hands to avoid Peter's attack. he huffed.
"how are you so good at this?" he knitted his eyebrows to focus on how to attack quickly without hurting you.
"it's a game i used to play with my brother and sister." you answered. Peter finally took his chance to slap your hands, to which you squealed excitedly as you had tried to move in time. Peter and you fell into a fit of giggles.
you both leaned against your seats, still facing each other. your hands fell on top of Peter's.
the brown haired boy quickly slid his hand out from under yours, not because he didn't enjoy the contact, but because he was worried you'd feel how clammy his hands were
you frowned slightly at the loss of contact.
"a– are we really fighting your sister?" Peter wondered out loud, without a second thought.
you shifted uncomfortably. Peter quickly noticed; his heart sped up and he mentally scolded himself for being so inconsiderate.
"not because i think she's evil! i mean,, i know that's what the news says.. but they also think Spider-Man's like thirty. and i'm not thirty! its just everything's crazy right now.. with the accords., i can't even imagine how you're feeling! probably terrible.. oh, g od wait, not terrible, i'm s–"
you had been watching with an endearing look in your eye. you had come to find that you enjoy watching Peter ramble.
his eyes would become unsettled and shaky, his body would begin to become more and more animated, but his voice
gosh, his voice was something you wanted to listen to for the rest of your life
but you could tell he was getting more and more skittish. so you put him out of his misery
"terrible probably wouldn't be my go-to word, it's up there though.. at least i got to meet you." you smiled softly.
Peter's eyes ran over your soft features. night had fallen, so the windows of the plan displayed an almost picturesque display of the moon and stars. the light hue of color the moon provided painted your face in a way that clouded Peter's thoughts.
with your comment of being grateful to have met him, Peter wasn't in control of his mouth for much longer.
"so pretty." he breathed. both of you guys froze.
Peter's face quickly morphed from love-sick to mortified. you blushed violently.
deciding you didn't want Peter to fall into another rant-like apology (because if you got to listen to him talk for that long in this setting, you might just drop the 'L' word) , you said,
"let's watch a movie?"
the two of you sat, shoulder to shoulder, watching Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, but being too hyper aware of their thighs pressed together and brushing hands to actually pay attention
upon arrival, both teenagers walked off the plane, sleep deprived , but with thumping hearts and dazed grins.
Peter threw himself on his hotel bed that night,, hiding under the covers
his thoughts replayed your interaction over and over (and over and over) in his head
the boy shoved his head, face first, into the stiff hotel pillow and let out a muffled groan
Peter flipped himself over, stared at the ceiling, before remembering his spouts of unnecessarily long explanations
he thrashed his body, kicking his poor blanket in frustration but most of all, out of embarrassment
he calmed himself down once his memories refreshed themselves over your gentle giggles and how soft your hands were
Peter fell asleep with cherry red cheeks and a blissful grin.
because despite those small mess ups, despite the futile way he beat his covers in humiliation, Peter treasures that day like no other.

Little Brother
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Summary: Peter Maximoff wakes up at the battle of Sokovia in another universe. Thankfully, he still has a family here.
Pairing: just some familial Maximoff fun
Warnings: guns, literal war, probably swearing idk i didnt check but i swear a lot, bad writing and thats it i think
A/N: I take no credit for this idea it was purely inspired by this post from @you-said-yes and they gave me permission to write it. I had a blast with this, I'm a sucker for the multiverse triplets. Oh and in this version I'm going with the story that Peter's Wanda is dead, cause thats just how i think of the story since shes never mentioned after DOFP.
Peter's POV
The first thing he remembered was running. He ran faster than he ever had before and he kept running for what felt like eternity until he woke up. In other circumstances, Peter would've brushed it off as just a bad dream, but that proved difficult considering he was laying on the ground covered in rubble. His head was pounding and he felt something warm and sticky near his eyebrow, pulsating from his forehead.
He tried to sit up and groaned, beginning to take in his surroundings. There were beaten up buildings lining the street in front of him, bricks laying scattered all around the ground. Peter had seen plenty of destruction like this; it came with the job of being in the X-Men. But this place was different. If not for the thin air and freezing cold, then for the fact that there were reminants of robots everywhere, some seemingly ripped in half. He squeezed his eyes shut, hoping it was just another dream.
"Wake up, Peter," he mumbled to himself
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of guns and screaming, alerting the young speedster. Without a second thought he got himself together and took off, trying to find the fight. He followed the sound of machine guns and picked up the pace when he felt the ground beneath him shake. It didn't take long until at the edge of the foreign city. He could barely believe his eyeswhrn he saw the fight. There was nothing weird about the fight per se, except for the fact that the city was flying.
Before the silver haired boy got the chance to question his sanity once again, a machine gun went off. He didn't fear the machines -- he could easily outrun them-- but there was a man holding a kid in the line of fire. They both looked utterly terrified and the man turned his back to the bullets, shielding the child with his body.
Peter went into super speed, and everything around him moved so slow, it looked like a still frame. The bullets were frozen in place and everything was deadly quiet, the sound being too slow to reach him. With the arrogance of a boy who'd outrun explosions, Peter casually walked up to the machine gun and poked the bullets out of the way, one by one. But not even halfway through his little charade, something moved in his peripheral. He tured to see a man, running to block the bullets with his body. His hair was so blonde it could be considered white, and his dark roots and facial hair revealed it was simply a dye job.
At the speed the silver haired speedster was going, everything should be practically still to him; yet this man was running. His steps were agonisingly slow, but still. Peter gawked as he realised what was happening. Another speedster. He had never met someone who shared his ability of super speed, and the excitement that bubbled in his veins was indescribable. Finally, there would be someone who understood him.
Peter turned to the bullets once again and removed them with ease. He didn't care to put on a show anymore, too excited to meet his equal.
Pietro's POV
He ran faster than he ever had before, faster than he ever could've imagined he could.
But he knew it wasn't fast enough.
Pietro Maximoff could outrun a lot of things, but a machine gun was not one of them. All he could hope was that his body would save Clint and the child in his arms. He was prepared to die, he had accepted it. At least he would die doing the right thing, though his heart broke at the thought of leaving Wanda.
His body tensed in anticipation for the bullets, but nothing came. The bullets were gone, and in their place was a young boy with goggles and silver hair. Pietro's confusion must've been painfully obvious cause the boy chuckled.
"You know, for a speedster, you sure are slow," he said, a grin spreading across his face. Pietro's confusion only grew at this statement.
"W-what?" His eyebrows furrowed at the silver haired fellow. "What happened- the bullets?"
"Oh the bullets? Yeah, I moved them. And I ripped apart the gun too while I was at it. Couldn't let you get filled with bullet holes," the boy said nonchalantly, as if it was the most normal thing on earth. He stretched his hand out to the older male. Pietro took it, at a loss for words.
"I'm Peter," the boy introduced. "Peter Maximoff." At those words, Pietro froze.
Maximoff.
"Pietro Maximoff," was all he could get out. Peters eyebrows furrowed at the name.
"How do you know my real name? No one calls me Pietro." Before he could explain however, Clint spoke up.
"Hey, you two. We gotta get to the helicarrier, Pietro you go get Wanda." At that, he took the child and brought him to the rest of them civilians. The two speedster were left staring at each other. After a few seconds of awkward silence, Pietro spoke up.
"Well, I have to go get my sister. You can go with Barton over there, then we can talk later, okay?" Peter only nodded, too deep in his own thoughts. That was all the confirmation he needed, so Pietro took off to get Wanda.
Wanda's POV
"Who is he?" She questioned her twin. A boy with silver hair had appeared mid battle and saved Pietro's life by stopped bullets. That wasn't the strangest thing about him however.
"I don't know," Pietro shrugged. "He says he's Peter Maximoff." Wanda gawked at him.
"Maximoff?" She asked in disbelief and her brother nodded. Her eyes turned to the mysterious Maximoff stood in a corner twiddling his thumbs so fast they looked like blur.
Wanda walked over to him and tapped his shoulder lightly, taking him out of his thoughts. He looked up with wide brown eyes. I know him from somewhere, she thought.
"Hi, I'm Wanda. You saved my brother today. I owe you everything, I don't know what I'd do if.." She didn't have to finish her sentence, he simply nodded.
"I'm happy to help, I lost my sister. I don't want anyone to go through that shit." His voice was low and broke slightly at the mention of his sister. Wanda's heart ached for him, and she wrapped her arms around the boy, surprising them both. He returned the hug as she mumbled how sorry she was for his loss.
Once they both let go, the boy started rubbing his neck anxiously. "I've been meaning to ask this but... where are we?" She eyed him to see if he was serious.
"We're at a safe place, outside Sokovia?"
"Sokovia?"
"Yes, Sokovia. You know, the city the flying city?" Wanda explained but the silver haired boy simply stared in utter confusion.
"I-I've never heard of Sokovia. Also, why was the city flying? How did I get here and who are you guys?" Peter's voice rose in panic, and he bit his lip as he awaited a response.
"I don't know how do answer you, but I'm Wanda Maximoff, the man you saved is my twin brother Pietro Maximoff. We're with the Avengers, who were fighting the evil robot Ultron who tried to wipe out humanity."
The boys eyes filled with tears at the mention of her name. And she realised from where she knew him.
Peter's POV
"Wanda?" He looked at the woman in front of him. She resembled his own twin, his Wanda, but she looked different. Something was off, but he couldn't quite place it. His wanda didn't have an accent, her hair was lighter; she was just different. Despite that, he pulled her into a tight embrace. Even if she wasn't the Wanda he knew, she was the closest to family he had right now.
"Wanda, is this real?" He asked, realizing the absurdity of the situation.
"Yes, it is. It's real, Peter." He squeezed her, not wanting to let go. Not when he finally got his sister back. Except it wasn't his sister, he reminded himself.
"I don't know whether to be sad or happy," he said, finally letting go. "Cause I'm finally seeing my sister again, but at the same time you not my sister. You're not my Wanda." He put his hands on his face. Wake up, Peter. To his surprise she didn't find him completely insane.
"You're not like my Pietro either, you're younger and..."-she paused, trying to find the words-"... just different. I can't explain it." He nodded in agreement. Something was off.
A blur of silver entered his vision and Pietro was beside them.
"What's going on?" He questioned upon seeing his siblings tear stained daces. Wanda smiled at him before looking to Peter again.
"I think we just got a new little brother."
the ending was a lil rushed sorry, hope it was still decent jdhdgdg
Ahhh I’m happy to see someone else loving The Devil Judge - it truly is amazing 😭😭🖤✨ I love Yo-Han and Ga-on’s relationship I swear let them be destructive together!
I hate waiting for new episodes so please tell me one of your theories, it can be about anything! 🥰
Right?! I love it so much, it's really good to have our lilttle fam getting bigger, can't wait until it airs on Netflix, we will have even more people going crazy about it in here! (at least I hope it will become a Netflix series after the show ends like Beyon Evil - another love of mine) and yes, lawful husbands can be destructive together but only to the bad people pls 🥺
It's tough waiting for new episodes every weekend and at the same time I wish for it not to end so soon. It hasn't finished but I already want Jisung and Jinyoung in a second season or working together in another drama. Their chemistry on screen is too good to stop there
About the theories, there's a few I saw on reddit/twitter and I make my own based on it and after watching every episode, but I think it's too early to talk about them. However, since you requested it, there's some that come to mind as interesting enough to mention.
The fire and the story behind it narrated by Yohan
1- Some people think Yohan did start the fire because he found out about the dirty politicians real intentions and decided to destroy them all in the same place before Isaac could donate the money bc he is "a devil" and capable of that since he was a kid as told by the priest with the school incident and the nanny with the maid and dog thing. side note: not for pranking some kids who bullied him because that's all it seems like, right? But in terms of observing, thinking strategically and being one step ahead when needing to punish the whole classroom who wronged him even as young as he was and feeling satisfied while watching the result and staying out of it. A type of mentality probably encouraged by Isaac and the books he gave him to read, unlike a regular kid who would just fight back or endure it. And we still have to see if it really was Yohan that contributed to the maid's death or if it was something/someone else and the nanny thinks it was him.
They think that Elijah even saw him in front of the door right before the fire started and smiled at him instead of smiling at her parents, like she did in the gates of the cathedral in the previous scene, so that's why she hates him so much now because she can remember seeing him as the responsible for it. But Yohan didn't intend to kill/hurt Isaac and the rest of the family, thinking he could save them or something, and felt guilty that he couldn't do so. Some even said that Yohan delayed too much in trying to save them after entering the church and seeing Elijah getting her legs hurt, that it may have been shock but why would he remember everything and everyone so clearly if he was in shock?
It's a good theory but I have my own remarks: why wouldn't he tell Isaac about the politicians himself if he knew the dirty about them then? They had a close relationship and Isaac gave him books about punishment and everything, it wasn't like Isaac was too naive and wouldn't believe his half-brother. He wouldn't have donated if Yohan told him. "Oh he was being the devil and finding a way to punish them instead of just letting is slide and not donating" still, Yohan wouldn't risk Isaac and Elijah with such a dangerous plan if he could avoid having Isaac and Elijah at all in the destruction scene by telling Isaac about it. It could have been shock and Yohan wanting to look and commit to mind everyone's face in that day responsible for hurting his niece and not caring about anyone else but themselves, pushing him away and delaying his attempt to get to them in time, leaving Isaac and the family behind (after they almost donated them their money) and things like that. So he can avenge them now, like he did in the school with the kids. That's why as soon as he could, he canceled the donation in the most easy way by saying his brother wasn't sane enough to make that decision before dying.
There's also the theories about Isaac being the insane/evil one, which wouldn't surprise me because I've considered it since episode 3 but at the same time I'll not be touching that topic now and I don't know if I ever will unless proven otherwise in some other episode
2- The other theory I have and saw people discussing (the one I'm most inclined to believe because I'm Yohan biased but again it's too soon to be sure) is that the story Yohan narrated is mostly if not completely true and he experiences extreme guilt for not coming back and saving Isaac when the church collapsed on him, as seen in the character introduction by tvN translated in this tweet that we now know it's about Isaac:
The last words Yohan said to Isaac was that he was going to come back for him, so he experiences nightmares like the flashbacks we saw in episode 1 and that's why we don't see any scene of Isaac in the middle of the church after the fire staring at Yohan or during the fire and turning to stare directly at Yohan when he narrates it. Because they're dreams and his guilty conscience and he remembers them when looking at Gaon. The flashback of Yohan kneeling down and touching Isaac with Elijah's bear close to him could be after he got Elijah out from there and he went back to put the bear next to him kinda like a "Sorry for not coming back in time", a reassurance that his daughter for whom he died for is safe and will always stay with him, a "Goodbye". He wouldn't just let Isaac's body lying there, he would go back even if it was too late.
Another thing is that when Yohan is showing Gaon his scar after telling the story, there's a book fallen at his feet. I think it was the thing that fell when Yohan standed up from the table and choked Gaon (trying hard not to comment on that choking scene as a 🔥 Gahan moment for our delight and imagination bc that's not the point right now lol)
This is the book:
And the first page of this book says "Never again will a single story be told as though it's the only one." - John Berger
I searched about it and it can mean that never again will a story be told as if it's the only one that matters. It could also mean that never again will a story be so encompassing of the elements it tackles that no other story need be written about these elements. A story has many perspectives that cannot be understood by just a single viewpoint. Isn't that what this kdrama is all about?
One of the translations of what Yohan said after Gaon left was:
But there's also another version:
The meaning of what he said changes a bit depending on which translation is more accurate, more so when we add the book quote to the equation.
Kim Gaon and his connection to Kang Yohan
People think Gaon could be Isaac's relative in some way or just a look alike (I think it's just a look alike to contribute to Yohan's obsession/curiosity and their proximity from the start, that's why no one really comments on it, not even Gaon when he sees Isaac's picture). Dear God, let them not be related because it would make shipping our lawful husbands really strange, to say the least.
What I'd like to say and almost everyone is forgetting is that in the tvN character introduction we already have Gaon's past and know he wasn't always a goody two shoes, the man was a juvenile delinquent and can even fight (the rebellious phase he said he made the tattoo in episode 3?). He too sought revenge for his parents when he was 16 because they committed suicide after losing their money and being deceived by multi-level con artists posing as social service workers. But the teacher and Soohyun were able to hold him back.
Yohan's father could be one of the reasons for their death. He was a loan shark and might have lend them money after they lost it all and it caused them to have a great debt, that's why Yohan did a thorough research on Gaon and was interested in him (not only because he resembled his half-brother). They shared one enemy in common and maybe even a place (churches, Yohan's father tended to confess his sins in a church when his debtors killed themselves). Or Yohan might have researched about him at the time he knew Gaon was chosen to be the associate judge sitting on his left side instead of way before, because it's important to Yohan to know who he is dealing with and the dirty of their past if they have any. And then Yohan discovered everything and saw his picture and resemblance to Isaac.
The thing is: they have the same distrust/repulsion of powerful people who deceive the world and had a painful loss because of that. Both of them think they have the other exactly where they want but they get more confused about what it is that they really want from the other and get closer (as said in the summary of episode 5 that tvN released) while figuring it out. They will come to an understanding and probably join forces at some point. We saw it in the end of episode 4, the scene of episode 5 when Gaon says he can understand Yohan's pain but can't trust him if he doesn't tell him everything and then Yohan says Gaon needs to decide if he will get in his way or stay by his side. Gaon might go back to his rebellious days and stay with Yohan to seek revenge together while distancing himself from Soohyun and Jungho who prevented him from doing so
And that's about it! Thank you for your ask and hope my answer is satisfying enough! 💙 The hardest but also most awesome part is having to wait to see.
Second Chances
Sequel to Not Enough (could be read as a standalone)
Pairing: Thor x Reader, OC x Reader
Summary: Years after Thor left you for Jane, he regrets his decision. While he trudged through life, you moved on, finding happiness until a chance encounter sees you both reconnected and he meets an unexpected surprise.
Author’s note: I’m so sorry it took so long to update! Really trying my best to write but the words just keep eluding me. I was hoping I could wrap the story up here but looks like I’m making a next chapter, which would be the final one.
You hurriedly pushed the cart in front of you with one hand as you shoved a bag of tomatoes onto it with the other, half-jogging to follow the little boy in front of you who was bouncing with energy, his imagination getting the best of him.
“Harry, stop! What did I say about running?” you warned your seven year old son who was now battling an invisible force with his shield, pretending to be his favorite superhero. He turned back to you with a mischievous laugh before zooming off, the face he just made instantly reminding you of his father and what once would have made you cry to remember was nothing but a distant, hollow memory now. Just another fact of life that happened to you, a fact that you’ve fully accepted and embraced, the very fact that made you who you were today. Stronger. Better. Happier.
The first few years had been hell, you literally saw him everywhere you went. From social media and TV to the billboards and posters strewn on the streets, it had felt like you would never be able to escape him. Even your happiness at seeing your son for the first time had been stabbed by your longing for Thor, longing for the family you once thought you would’ve had. But slowly and surely, over the years, you began to heal. The likeness and little quirks Harry inherited from his father no longer bothered you. That didn’t matter anymore, he was yours and you were a family. It didn’t matter that Thor’s smile was always written on Harry’s face or his booming laughter always echoed from Harry’s lips. You supposed it all came down to the godly Asgardian blood pumping in his veins. And that was something you didn’t even really want to dwell on now.
“Harry! If you don’t get back here, I’m putting you in this cart!” You shrieked which immediately had him backpedaling.
“Mom, I’m too old for that!”
“Then stick with me,”
He begrudgingly walked back to you, reaching his hand up to rest on your arm on the cart’s handle while he moped. You smiled, despite his protests and playful energy, he was always respectful enough to follow you. But still, you tried to grocery shop as fast as you could with a kid as impatient as your own. Soon, you were in line for the cashier, texting Aaron which lane to meet you at, barely even having your eyes off Harry when suddenly, he surged with excitement and dashed off without warning. You felt your heart drop as you went after him, leaving your cart unattended. ‘This kid is going to be the death of me’ you swore to yourself, following him to the aisle he ran into before he disappeared. Damn, that stupid Asgardian blood for making him so quick. You finally spotted him talking to a man, his neck bent way back as he looked up at him, amazement in his eyes. You didn’t even bother looking at the man’s face, all you felt was relief while you frantically called out his name.
“Harry!” Your voice rang out, laced with irritation, making Thor stiffen. Had he heard right? That sounded an awful lot like… “Y/N?” His breathless voice whispered, barely even audible as he watched you stomp down to them, shrieking what he assumed was the boy’s name.
“What the hell were you thinking? What did I say about running off?” You knelt down to the boy, shaking him, unaware of the hulking man’s presence whose mouth was opening and shutting at the mere sight of you. He couldn’t believe it. After years of searching, you were finally in front of him, alive and well with… wait, was the boy your son?
Scolding Harry, you didn’t notice how giddy he was as he tried to shut you up to tell you something important. You didn’t notice Thor’s eyes burning into you, taking into account how well and healthy you looked. You lost some of the weight you had when you were younger, making your face a bit more mature than he last saw, the barely visible crinkles by your eyes were a bit more pronounced too but you were just as lovely, if not, even more so than he remembered. His heart swelled at the sight of you and there was nothing more he wanted than to crush you into his arms and apologize for all that he has done, hoping against all odds that he could still make things right again.
“But Mom, look! It’s Thor!” Harry’s thrilled voice interrupted you and you felt your blood run cold. The same blue eyes you’ve dreamt about for years stared back at you, confusion marring their icy depths.
“Mom? Y/N, you have a son?” Thor heard himself ask. He had no right to be disappointed, no right to feel betrayed and yet, he was selfish enough to be so. He knew deep down, you deserved a family, deserved to have a life. Unlike how he’d been ever since he broke things off with you.
You couldn’t find the words to speak. You had this scenario in your head for as long as you could remember and yet, nothing could compare to the real thing. You felt your mouth open and close, your body knowing you had to say something even when your brain couldn’t comprehend. What did people really say in these things? You could feel your breaths coming faster, your head shaking at him as you took a hold of Harry. What if he recognized him? What if he wanted to take him away?
“I have to go,” you spoke hastily, turning your back to him and dragging Harry along with you despite his protests. He used his weight to pull you back to the superhero, whining the whole time but determination must’ve gotten the best of you, his tries falling short as you kept walking, your heart heavy.
“Y/N, wait,” you could hear Thor shout, his hand suddenly coming up to your elbow to stop you, turning you around to face him. Harry huffed at your side, his brows furrowing at you, “Mom! Why are you being so weird?”
“Please don’t go,” Thor pleaded with you, completely ignoring the kid who matched his very own frown. “It’s been so long, darling. How have you been? Could we talk?” He asked in a desperate rush, worried that you’d walk out on him again.
“There’s nothing to talk about, Thor,” you yanked your arm out of his grasp, glancing nervously at Harry while his eyes went wide with astonishment.
“Mom, you know Thor?” His gasp was so loud, it made Thor look down at him again, his brows wrinkling in confusion as he stared at the boy, those locks eerily looking like his own, the familiar set of his chin and jaw, the spark in his eyes… it couldn’t be. Shaking his head, he could suddenly hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears, his palms starting to sweat as his breath came in rapid bursts. You felt your heart drop to your stomach the moment realization dawned on his face.
“Thor,” your voice betrayed your nerves as you shook your head at him. Not here, please. Not here.
“Y/N, how old is your son?” He asked, his voice unmistakably low and lethal. The tick in his jaw and his clenched fists, an indication of just how close he was to losing control. You opened your mouth to speak when Harry replied for you, oblivious to the tension, quirking an eyebrow up at his father.
“Seven, but my mom thinks I act younger when she’s mad at me.” His innocent voice punched Thor right in the gut. Seven years since you’d been gone. Seven years, he’d wondered where you were. Seven years, he’d wondered why you didn’t even say goodbye. He didn’t need any proof, the more he stared at the boy, the clearer the picture became. Here you were, in an obscure, small town living your life with his son, while he had been going through life with no direction of his own, just following orders and saving those who needed it with barely a break. Burying himself in work to forget the guilt and regret of the past. Mission after mission without anyone to look forward to. To think he used to trust you with his life, he scoffed to himself. If he weren’t so devastated, he would’ve laughed. Would anyone be able to imagine the irony? A week before his wedding, he broke it off with his intended bride, breaking sweet Jane’s heart because he realized his abiding love wasn’t for the woman he had pined for, the one he thought had gotten away but for you, the only one who had seen him at his worst but stayed by his side through it all anyway. He looked for you afterwards, only to find your empty apartment, your old employer and friends having no idea where you’d gone to.
You watched his throat bob as he swallowed his pride, already feeling his seething anger bubbling below the surface. He turned away from you, his jaw clenched as he focused on his son, easily getting entranced by the way he engaged him in conversation.
“My mom got me his shield for Christmas. Look! I always bring it with me now cause I wanna be like him when I grow up even though mom always says you’re the strongest Avenger,” Harry continued to talk, nonchalantly ratting you out. You felt yourself flush as Thor glanced at you briefly before he kneeled to your son’s eye level.
“Is that so?” He asked him, his eyes drinking him in, observing how alike they were and noticing the little quirks that was unmistakably yours too. Under normal circumstances, he would’ve had a witty return, and joked about proving his prowess but now, he was so quiet, so fascinated with whatever came from his tiny mouth that it wouldn’t have mattered if he had spoken gibberish. All he wanted was to hear his voice.
“Mm-hmm, Aaron thinks it’s the Hulk but mom always says it’s you,”
Hold on a minute.
“Aaron?” Thor had no idea he said that out loud, his face twisted into pure disdain. Who the heck was this Aaron now?
“Yup, mom’s—”
Just when you were about to warn him to stop talking, Aaron’s relieved voice rang loud and clear,
“There you guys are! I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” He strode to your direction, a smile on his face as he pushed a cart full of repair tools when suddenly, he recognized the man who had just stood up, making his smile fall and his back stiffen. Thor watched Aaron with a deep scowl on his face, squaring his shoulders. He had just about too many revelations in one day, he certainly didn’t need to see the man you’ve been with these past few years.
Any other man would’ve cowered under his gaze but not this one. Instead, he looked to you with sympathy, putting a hand on your lower back to lend his support.
And somehow, that hurt him even more.
“Aaron! I was just telling Thor about you!” Harry beamed up at him. Thor felt the unexpected twist of jealousy coil in his stomach. This was supposed to be his family. What the hell had he done to deserve this?
“Oh yeah, Buddy?” Aaron answered back, keeping his voice light as he ruffled the boy’s hair, the tension on shoulders still visible to anyone watching.
“Uh-huh. Tell him about—”
“Harry,” you cut your son off before this awkward situation grew longer.
“Sweetie, why don’t you go with Aaron first and help him find the cart we left?” You smiled down at him sweetly ignoring the dread creeping up your veins at having to face Thor alone.
“But Mom, I’m still talking to Thor,” Harry whined back.
“Don’t worry. I’m not leaving,” Thor told him sincerely, the words holding much more meaning than what his son realized. Harry dragged Aaron off quickly, promising they wouldn’t take long. Thor didn’t miss the concerned looks you exchanged and the little nod of reassurance you gave as they scrambled off. His jaw twitched at the sight of it. He squared his shoulders and crossed his arms as he tried to control the temper brewing inside him, his deadly gaze almost making you cower. Almost. But you stood your ground and lifted your chin up at him instead. The determined look on your face instantly causing him to unravel and before you could say anything, his shoulders sagged, arms dropping as he let out a defeated sigh.
“Why?” He asked you, his voice disbelieving and quiet. His eyes searched yours without the fight you were expecting, looking at you as if you had just stomped on his dreams, making your resolve waver. What did he mean by that?
“I made a life for myself, Thor. What did you expect?” You replied accusingly, justifying to yourself that you had the right to get mad.
“What did I expect? What did I expect? You’re really asking me that when you never told me we have a son?” His voice rose questioningly, looking at you as if he didn’t know you. You felt your anger burst forth, shaking your head.
“Don’t,” you threatened, your eyes cold. “Don’t you dare put this on me when you never bothered to answer any of my calls. You’re the one who made it very clear you didn’t want anything to do with me,” your voice was calm and steady, devoid of the roiling emotions you felt inside, even as your hands shook. Taking several deep breaths, you tried to control yourself, not wanting to give him the chance to break you down so easily again. He shook his head incredulously, confused about what you just said.
“What? What calls?” He asked, pulling his hair back knowing damned well he didn’t receive any calls or even any indication that you wanted to reconnect. As far as he was concerned, you had fallen off the face of the earth, not wanting to ever be found. You shook your head, not believing an ounce of what he said.
“Stop pretending, Thor. It’s pathetic,” you scoffed at him, disgust clearly written on your face. Not being able to stop yourself, you turned around and walked with purpose, away from him and his stupid excuses. You knew it was pointless, he wasn’t ever going to let you go now that he knew the truth. You knew he would fight to be in Harry’s life but you couldn’t seem to stop your feet from moving. How could he pretend to be the injured party here? As if you were the villain who took his son away. As if he gave you any other choice! You still remembered the night you stood outside the compound, alone and pregnant, drenched in rain and still, they turned you away.
“Y/N, please,” he pleaded behind you, his voice holding a kind of desperation you never heard before, his footsteps quick and heavy as he trailed after you. This time, grabbing your hand to turn you around, hoping the small, familiar intimacy would bring you back. Your jaw clenched as you looked down your intertwined hands, pulling yours away from his as quickly as he caught it.
“Y/N, please don’t leave,” he begged, having lost all of his pride.
“I never wanted you out of my life! I don’t even know what calls you’re talking about! Darling, please. Harry deserves to know his father, I need to be in my son’s life,” His voice broke off at the last tone, piercing your heart. He looked to you as if you held all the power to dictate his life, his happiness in the palm of your hands. You had never seen him so vulnerable, the desperation in his eyes simmering your anger and frustration that you found yourself softening up.
“I can’t promise you anything, Thor. I’m not letting you walk in and out of his life whenever you please. You can’t just leave because you need a change of pace, do you understand that?” you willed him to back out now before he promised anything he couldn’t commit to. At least this way, it was only you who was going to get hurt, sparing Harry the future heartbreak.Your words pierced his soul. Is that what you thought of him? That he just left you because he got bored?
“I give you my word, Y/N. I would never do that to him,” he vowed, his voice solemn while his eyes concealed the guilt and hurt he felt at what he’s done to you. Gone was the carefree girl he knew, in place was this woman who built up walls around her heart. Even now, you looked at him suspiciously, weighing your options, wondering if you were doing the right thing.
The sound of Harry’s excited cheer and Aaron’s thwarted attempts at stalling him grew near, making you jump out of your hesitation. You quickly gave Thor instructions to meet you at the local cafe tomorrow before you changed your mind. He nodded his thanks to you, his eyes soft as he watched you whip out out a smile for your boy, all traces of anger and hurt wiped out. You were magnificent; strong, protective and caring, all of the things he knew you would be when you became a mother. A sad smile formed on his face, if only he was there with you through it all.
Harry ran straight to Thor, arms wrapping immediately to his waist. “You didn’t leave!” he giggled, giddy with excitement. Thor was taken aback by the moment and froze. Here was his son, hugging him for the first time. The weight of the moment almost overwhelmed him, his tears threatening to fall as he wrapped his arms around the boy’s back.
“No, kid. I wouldn’t.” he spoke, his voice low and serious, holding more meaning than Harry understood. His son squeezed him tighter, strength he didn’t think a normal child would possess coming from his tiny arms. Thor’s brows furrowed as he looked to you. You escaped his curious gaze, clearing your throat, “Harry, Thor has to get going. Come on, sweetie, say your goodbyes,” you coaxed, having had enough for one day. You needed a rest before you met him again tomorrow to set up the ground rules. He had to understand you were moving in Harry’s pace, you weren’t going to rush him to something he wasn’t ready for.
“But Mom, I just got back!” Harry frowned at you while Thor looked hopeful and all you could do was sigh.
“Harry, come on. We gotta get going if you still wanna help me fix your door,” Aaron smiled at him, hoping he’d catch the boy’s attention but Harry just whined. “Your ice cream will melt, buddy.” he continued to no avail, meeting your resigned eyes. As much as it pained Thor, he knew he had to let him go. He didn’t want to push his luck for today. He already trusts you, he just needed you to trust him back.
“I do have to go, Harry. But do not worry,” Thor paused, his eyes meeting yours, a silent permission before he continued. At your nod, his shoulders relaxed in relief.
“We will see each other again, I promise.”
Buy me a ☕ Character Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Steve Rogers x F!Reader
Word Count: 1801
Rating: E
Warnings: pregnancy
Synopsis: Four years after Steve and Bucky got to the bottom of the HYDRA conspiracy that had led to you and your son being hunted for the first three years of his life, you, Bucky, and Steve have carved out a nice life together. Things are calm and you feel like a family unit. When Geo starts calling Bucky and Steve ‘dad’, a decision is made to try and add to your family.
Things aren’t as calm as they seem. When your pregnancy hits the papers, HYDRA rears its head once again, and Steve and Bucky need to track you down to protect the family they had created.
Chapter 10
The tabloid sites all latched on to the story of you being pregnant very quickly. Due to the fact you were often seen out with either Bucky or Steve or both, there had been speculation about who exactly you were. Theories went from dating one and cheating on them with the other. Being a ‘close family friend’. Dating one and the other being a close friend. Bouncing between them both like a ping-pong ball. Many fans speculated that they were polyamorous. Bucky had even made the mistake of going deep into the ‘Avengers fandom’ and discovered people doing what they called ‘shipping’ the three of you together. Not just the three of you but him and Steve with all kinds of people. He’d stopped looking when he saw people writing stories about him and Tony together. It turned out there were things he was better off not knowing.
None of the tabloids ever assumed polyamory though, and neither he nor Steve was going to confirm it for them. That made your pregnancy the subject of a lot of speculation. Whose baby was it? The most loved version of the story was that it was Bucky’s love child conceived while you were cheating on Steve with him.
It was a little stressful, but Bucky had heard worse. There was still a vocal majority that considered him a threat that should have been tried for his crimes years ago. Bucky had learned a long time ago not to google himself unless he was feeling particularly self-destructive. You, on the other hand, were still learning, so it took some reassuring that this matter was no one else's business.
Besides the ever-present gossip mill, things were going well. Every doctor's appointment showed that the baby was developing well. All the tests you had were coming back fine. You seemed to be full of energy and Geo was starting to get excited about the idea of having a little brother or sister. The new place was nearly finished. Bucky hadn’t been sent on a mission for a long time. He felt happy - and that was a feeling he liked to experience as fully as he could because he knew from experience how fleeting it could be.
The three of you had decided to take Geo along to the ultrasound where you’d be finding out the sex. He had only seen pictures of the baby so far and you’d thought he might like to see them moving around and find out if he was having a brother or a sister. According to you, the baby was kicking a lot at the moment, so you weren't worried about bad news being delivered.
Geo sat on Bucky’s lap while Steve sat beside you, holding your hand as the technician squeeze the gel onto your stomach. “Have they been kicking much?” Brown asked as she began to move the wand around on your stomach. Bucky looked up at the screen, waiting for the baby to come into view.
You smiled and nodded. “So much. The little nugget is going to be a fighter.”
Brown smiled. “Just like it’s dads, huh?” She said. “Has anyone else felt the kicks?”
“Not yet,” Steve answered. “I can’t wait though.”
The baby came into view on the screen. You’d been getting pretty regular ultrasounds with your checkups and Bucky liked how the little blob was getting bigger and looking more like a baby every time. “It shouldn’t be too much longer. I’d bet by the end of the week you get a little flutter against your hand.”
Steve looked at Bucky and grinned and Bucky couldn’t help but lean over and peck his lips. Geo didn’t seem that happy with the action and he wriggled in Bucky’s lap. Bucky chuckled and pulled back. “Can you see the baby, G?” He asked, pointing at the screen.
Geo nodded. “The machine is really cool how it works. It’s using sound to make the shape of the baby inside mom.”
“That’s right,” Brown said. “You’re a smart kid.”
Geo looked up at Bucky and grinned obviously very proud of himself. Bucky smiled and ruffled his hair.
“If you see here,” Brown said. “This is the baby's head, and their spine. They have hands and feet and you can even see their toes and fingers…”
Geo watched on fascinated by the digital image of his new sibling. Not just because that was his new sibling, but because he had a scientific fascination with where it was developmentally and how the machines could show what they show. He asked lots of questions about whether it could hear or see and how it absorbed food. Bucky couldn’t really remember what kids were like, and so he had no idea if this was advance thinking for a seven-year-old or not. He felt like it was advanced though, and he made a mental note to ask you later.
“Do you know if it’s a boy or a girl?” Geo asked.
“I can find out,” the tech said. “Is that okay, Captain Rogers?”
Steve chuckled. “It’s not just my decision to make.”
Brown hid her face behind her hands for a moment and shook her head. “I’m so sorry, that is such a default reaction.”
“It’s fine,” Steve said. “Please just relax. We’re just patients. And yes, we already decided we wanted to find out.”
She moved the wand around to get it into position. “Well, bud,” Brown said. “Did you have a preference?”
“I dunno,” Geo said. “I don’t have either.”
“Well you don’t have a brother,” Brown said. “You’re going to have a little sister.”
“It’s a girl?” Bucky asked, looking over at you and Steve to see your reactions. Steve looked like he’d been lit up from the inside, and tears had pricked your eyes.
“That’s right. It’s a girl,” Brown confirmed.
“A little girl,” Steve said, softly.
“Now we have one of each,” Bucky said, and Geo turned around on Bucky’s lap and hugged him. Bucky closed his arms around the boy, hugging him tightly. “You’re gonna be such a good big brother,” Bucky whispered as he hugged the boy.
“Do you want any pictures this time?” Brown asked.
“Yes, please,” you said, quickly.
Brown cleaned off the paddle and pressed the button to print out the photos of the baby. You grabbed some kleenex from the counter and cleaned the gel off your stomach. “You think Morgan will be excited there’s going to be another little girl around?” Steve asked Geo.
“Probably,” Geo said. “As long as she likes robots too. Umm… you think the baby will be able to talk to the computers like I can?”
Steve furrowed his brow as he helped you up. Bucky shook his head to clear it. It was strange, despite the fact that Geo had powers that he’d clearly gotten from you, and the fact both he and Steve had the Super Serum, the thought of a super-powered baby had never really crossed their minds. It was like all that was just such a normal part of their lives now, they didn’t really think about how it impacted things. You didn’t have powers and it was possible the only reason Geo did was that both you and his father had been through experimentation so close to his conception. It could be that those drugs were now completely out of your system, but no one had thought to look into that first.
“You know what?” Steve said eventually. “I don’t know.”
“Probably should have considered that before we dived in with both feet, huh?” You said.
“You could ask your obstetrician about doing an amniocentesis,” Brown suggested. “Then they could do a genetic workup. Check for abnormalities.”
“Don’t they have risks involved?” You asked.
“Sure, but normally it’s one of those things where there are risks involved either way, and you decide which outcome is worse,” Brown explained.
You furrowed your brow and nodded and Bucky wondered what you were thinking. “Thank you, Miss Brown,” Steve said. “We’ll see you next time.”
“Of course,” she said, brightly. “See you.”
The four of you walked out into the ward and headed to the elevator. “I’m sorry if I upset you,” Geo said as the doors opened.
“You didn’t, G. Don’t worry,” you assured him, kissing the top of his head. “It’s just not something we thought about when we probably should have. Because you got your powers from me and your birth dad, but Bucky and Steve have their own powers.”
“Well, we’re enhanced,” Steve corrected them. “Not the same as what you have.”
“I think…” Bucky said slowly, aware that this was not a discussion that should be held in front of Geo, but also knowing that the boy needed to be reassured that his powers were not a negative, nor would he be losing the sister he really only just met. “I think it might be too late to worry about. I mean… what if they do find out the baby is enhanced? It’s not like we would love them any less, or not want them. They’d just be special, like Geo.”
“Of course,” you said quickly. “We would have done this either way I think.”
“So… let’s just wait and see. We don’t want to risk anything bad happening,” Bucky said. “The baby looks normal, so we know it’s not a tentacle beast.”
Geo started laughing. “That would be so cool.”
“She might not be able to talk to computers even if she does have powers though, G,” you said, stifling your own laugh. “When I had powers I could hear people’s thoughts. And your dad, he could run really fast.”
“Wow,” Geo said. “I hope she can fly.”
“Oh my goodness,” you said. “I don’t.”
“Yeah, imagine having to change a diaper on a baby and it’s zooming around over your head,” Bucky said, making Geo breakdown into fits of giggles.
“Alright, Geo,” Steve said. “You go wash up and we’ll have some lunch. Do you want to see if Morgan can come to play and you can tell her all about your sister?”
“Yeah, alright,” Geo said, running off to the bathroom.
Steve turned to you and Bucky and took your hands. “It’s going to be fine,” he said. “We can face whatever happens, I know we can.”
“Let’s just hope they can’t fly,” you joked.
“We’ll handle that too,” Steve said.
“Yeah, we’ll put a little harness on them, and weigh them down with rocks,” Bucky joked and you burst out laughing.
Steve wrapped his arms around you and pulled Bucky in close so that all three of you were holding each other. Bucky closed his eyes and breathed you both in, confident that together, you could all handle whatever powers she may or may not have.
The Real Hero
This is my baby that I wrote right after seeing Endgame.
Pepper Stark sighed as the mask closed over her face and she felt such a relief. Her body literally deflated and without knowing it was coming, tears poured from her eyes. Tears she hadn’t shed since the day it happened. Since the day she told him to rest.
She had to be so strong. Strong for Morgan and for Peter. Strong for Happy and Rhodey. Strong for Bruce and even Thor. They came around. Tony’s boys. Her boys. And they drank and they cried and she took care of them.
She was so incredibly exhausted.
Just so exhausted.
The suit smelled like him. And she smiled because the smell was fading from her home. Some of his clothes still had it but his pillow. Their sheets. She went weeks before she finally broke down and washed them.
But she was just so exhausted. And so she sat in his suit, alone in their garage, until she heard someone call for her. And then with one last deep breath she stepped out and didn’t look back as she made her way back to her family.
It didn’t occur to her until Thor made an offhand comment about her competing with him in food consumption.
She never really paid much attention to Thor’s offhand rudeness. It’s not like he was purposely trying to be that way. But Happy gave her a look and Rhodey had tried to explain to Thor how you just can’t say that to a woman. But then her eyes dropped to Morgan’s and suddenly she knew. She just knew.
She bought the test that night, sneaking out after Morgan and Peter were passed out in the living room after their movie night. Happy was on the porch with Rhodey, quietly talking. She paused to tell them she would be right back and Happy, of course, offered to go with her. She wrinkled her nose and declined.
Once the test was in her hand, she couldn’t wait to make the drive back so she went into the store bathroom and peed on the stick. It was a plus sign before she even finished.
Numb. She felt completely numb. When they found out she was pregnant with Morgan, it had been the first time she had seen Tony smile since the snap. The first time she felt hope for their future. He had been with her every single step through the pregnancy. They had bought the cabin soon after finding out and had made it their home.
She drove home in silence and walked up the steps to the cabin. Happy and Rhodey still there. She paused, staring through the front door. She couldn’t see the kids but she knew they were there. Peter on his back on the couch, one arm tossed over his head, the other wrapped around Morgan, who was tucked between him and the back of the couch, her head nestled on his chest. She always ended up in Peters arms when he stayed over. Even if Pepper puts her to bed in her own room, she finds her with Peter in the mornings.
The kid doesn’t mind. Insisted it was fine and she stopped worrying about letting him have his privacy as the two grew closer than any pair of siblings she’s ever known.
“Everything okay Pepper?” Rhodey asks in a quiet voice and she nods.
She nods and then says the words out loud, “I’m pregnant.” Her breath hitches and she hears them both gasp. She nods again, “Pregnant. I assume I’m five months considering….” her voice goes out and she clears it.
“Pepper.” Happy is beside her and she crushes her purse strap in her hands.
“Let’s not tell the kids just yet.” She says nodding to where Morgan and Peter are sleeping. And they both agree to keep it between them.
She lies in their, her, bed after Happy helps her get the kids settled in their own. Tears silently slide down her face as she watches a hologram of Tony. It’s on silent, because even though she needs him close, sometimes hearing his voice is just too much for her. It’s one of his holograms from when he was stuck in space. One from the beginning, when he is still optimistic about returning to them. To her. And he is all over the place, his hands moving, his eyes bright as he explains their plan. How he’s certain it’ll work. She has it memorized and can hear his voice in her head as he says the words.
“You were supposed to be here.” She whispers to him. The hologram leans closer and presses a kiss and she closes her eyes. Five months without feeling his lips on hers. Five months without feeling his arms wrapped around her.
Five months is far too long and she can’t stand to think the days, months, years will only continue to add up.
-----
She’s sitting alone in one of the lawn chairs by the lake when a mug of steaming coffee appears in front of her. She glances up from the fog covering the lake to find Peter. She smiles softly at him as she takes the mug and thanks him. He returns the smile and turns to leave but she stops him.
“Peter, join me?”
He only hesitates for a moment, his brown eyes showing surprise. He sits in the other chair, Tony’s chair, and leans forward, his forearms on his knees. He glances over at her, one of his knees starting to jiggle. She reaches out a hand and gently squeezes his arm, “Tony and I spent many mornings out here, just like this. Most of the time we didn’t talk, just remembered. Remembered all we’ve lost, everything we still had.”
Peter sucks in a breath as he drops his head and she slides her hand down his arm, taking his hand in hers and linking their fingers, squeezing hard. He returns the squeeze but doesn’t look back at her.
“But when we did talk, it was ninety percent of the time about you. Especially before Morgan. He told me so many stories. Probably every single moment between the two of you, he talked about.”
Peter shakes his head and Pepper turns back to the lake but not before she sees tears drop to the ground. He is squeezing her hand even harder now and it’s almost painful but she doesn’t complain.
She barely knew Peter before. She knew of him, of course from Happy and then Tony himself. She remembers laughing at the way the kid had worked his way into Tony’s heart. How Tony had tried so hard to resist but she had known. Oh had she known. Peter is the reason she began to imagine having children with Tony. Peter is the reason she knew Tony would be a good dad.
Because he was a good dad already.
“Morgan may be our biological daughter but you, Peter, were every bit his son in his heart. There was no difference between his love for you and her.”
----
Now that she knows, she can’t believe she ignored all the symptoms. Not that she ignored them, just she brushed them aside as grieving symptoms.
Overly emotional, check.
Exhausted, check.
Nauseous one moment, ravionious the next, check.
It’s quiet at the cabin for the next week and it’s exactly what she needed to get her head wrapped around what would be coming in another four months. But then she goes to her doctor and is given even more shocking news.
“It’s twins.”
Happy drops the glass in his hand, it shatters on impact and Peter comes sliding out of his room, swinging down to them from the ceiling, before the glass has even finished shattering.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa.” Pepper steps in front of him as he lands, stopping him from stepping on the broken glass in his bare feet.
“What did we say about doing that inside the house, Kid?” Happy chastises and Peter looks sheepish as he tries to explain his reasoning.
“I heard the crash, I thought someone was attacking. I thought ….” his eyes meet hers and he cringes, “I’m sorry, Mrs. Potts … um Stark.”
She reaches up and squeezes his shoulder, “Pepper, Peter. I’m Pepper to you. And as you can see,” She waves behind her at the broken glass, “We’re all just fine here. However, I do need to talk to you and Morgan. Will you go grab her and come back down here?”
“Use the stairs.” Happy says harshly from the floor, where he is picking up pieces of glass.
“Of course, sir.” Peter says and bounds up the stairs loudly, like the teenager he is.
Happy leaves and returns a moment later with a broom and begins cleaning up, “Twins?”
Pepper lets out a harsh laugh, “Yes. Boys.”
Happy pauses looking at her, “Both of them?”
Pepper nods, “Of course he couldn’t just die a hero’s death. He had to leave us all with a parting gift.”
“Sounds like Tony.”
They both roll their eyes and Pepper can’t help the small laugh that escapes her.
____
When the boys finally arrive in the world, most things are back to normal. Not for her, or the Avengers. But the rest of the world has more or less righted itself. People are no longer walking around as if they’re in a daze. They’re getting their lives back to normal. And she suppose’s in a way she is too.
But she’s also not. Because when she wakes in the middle of the night with contractions, she plays the last hologram Tony made while on the ship, before informing anyone else she is in labor. The sound is on this time, because she needs his voice and she tells him it’s time.
He doesn’t answer her. Not the way she wants and she reaches out to him. Her fingers poking through his cheek as he tells her he’s going to go to sleep.
“Please don’t.” She whispers. But the hologram Tony is quiet as he closes his eyes.
There’s a soft knock on her door and Peter peeks his head through, “I’m so sorry Mrs., Pepper, I heard his voice and rushed down here, only..” he drops his eyes and she holds a hand out to him. He shuffles in and sits beside her on the bed, taking her hand. He sees the hologram and sucks in a breath, before letting it out.
“I miss him so much.” Peter says as they both stare at the sleeping hologram.
“I know you do.” Peter lies his head on her shoulder and she wraps an arm around him as she hugs him closer.
“I hear you in here at night, listening to his voice. I can hear you cry.”
Pepper sucks in a breath, “Oh Peter I’m so sorry. I forget your Spider senses make you more sensitive to sounds.”
He shakes his head, “Most nights I go on the roof so you can have privacy. You try so hard to be strong for all of his.” He chuckles to himself, “All these big bad superheroes and you’re the one that has to be strong for all of us.” He picks his head up and turns to her, “We should be the ones being strong for you.”
Pepper smiles, as she brushes his hair across his forehead, “You are. All of you are. We all have our moments of weakness and we lean on one another.”
She means to say more. Wants to say more but a contraction hits her and this one is stronger than the others. Peter senses it and jumps up, “Oh God, are you?”
Pepper nods as she grinds her teeth. Finally it passes and she takes a deep breath, “I think we should call Bruce.”
“Right.” Peter is heading for the door
“And maybe wake up Happy,”
“On it.” Peter calls out as he leaves the room.
After that it’s chaos. Controlled chaos but still chaos as Happy flutters around her and then Bruce arriving with Dr. Cho. She sees Rhodey briefly and then the boys are coming and she’s closed off in her room for some time.
She delivers six hours after her first contraction started. Identical twin boys. Both with dark hair and dark eyes. Both screaming as they enter the world. And she knows she has her Tony back times two.
The boys are a week old and she still hasn’t named them. Everyone is getting anxious and suggesting names. It’s to the point where they’re just throwing pretty much any name they can think of her way. Last time, she did this with Tony and they agreed on a name within a week of knowing the gender. And although she’s not exactly alone in naming her boys this time, she just really, really wants her Tony here to contribute.
She does know she doesn’t want to give one boy their father’s name and not the other. And she’s not sure she wants to have his name on her tongue so soon. So that is off the table.
Peter is the one that suggests it one evening when it’s just her, Rhodey, Happy and the four kids. She is breastfeeding one, while Peter is burping the other.
It’s amazing how fast the kid has caught on. When she first placed one of the boys in his arms, he had looked so incredibly terrified. But as May took nearly a hundred photos, he had started to relax and by the time he held the other twin he was comfortable.
Peter suggests using Tony’s name as both of their middle names, “That way it’ll be like he’s here again because the only time you’ll use their middle name is when you’re getting onto them.”
“Kid has a point.” Rhodey says and Pepper laughs.
So she names them.
Parker and Roman Anthony Stark.
Peter tears up when she tells him.
Clint cries when he meets them a week later. She waited to tell him and she’s glad she did. He holds Roman just a little bit longer then he does Parker and that’s okay.
Peter did the same.
The boys are very much loved. Not only by her and Morgan and Peter. But by everyone that loved and respected Tony. Pepper worried so much during her pregnancy, about them not knowing their father, but they know him. They hear his name daily as story after story is told to them and Morgan.
So many stories are told. And as the years go by the stories are less sad and filled with more laughter.
They see him on the holograms and hear his voice every single day.
The years start to pass and as they boys learn to crawl then walk, they start to talk and she sees her Tony in them. They are both so incredibly smart. All of her kids are. Peter goes to MIT after high school and still manages being Spiderman and spending every weekend at their house. When he turns twenty-one she gifts him with the CEO of Stark Industries title and everyone hoots and hollers as he stares wide-eyed at her. She smiles and hugs him, whispering in his ear “It’s what he wanted. One of the last things he said to me was if this works, the kid gets it all.”
“But Morgan? The twins?”
Pepper shakes her head as she pulls back but places her forehead against his to keep their conversation private, “They’ll be fine. And if they want a part in the company it’s theirs. But you,” She squeezes his neck, because even after all these years of trying to convince him he’s still too stubborn to see it, “are his first born and it is rightfully yours.”
After that, the alcohol is opened and Pepper leaves with the younger kids before they can see Thor karaoke drunkenly his favorite song (Thunder by Imagine Dragons from 2018. ALWAYS that song). Or Bucky and Sam singing “You’ve Got Me Babe” to a laughing Steve.
Morgan follows in her big brother’s footsteps. She rebels a bit in her teenage years. Dates a boy they all disapprove of (he doesn’t last long, bad boys don’t exactly like being around the Avengers) and she screams at Peter and Rhodey and Thor after they pull out the muscle, lightening and spiderwebs and scare the boy away. He breaks up with her on his way out the door screaming about how “Any boy would be insane to date you Morgan Stark.”
Morgan in turn screams at them about how they ruin her life being superheroes and always being around and how she wishes they weren’t in her life.
Pepper holds up a hand to silence the men as her normally calm sixteen year old daughter races up the stairs and slams her door. She follows her once she has the twins settled with Peter, a movie and a snack. Rhodey and Thor having already left after apologizing to Pepper.
Knocking softly on the door, Pepper opens it and steps inside, closing the door behind her. Morgan is laying on her stomach on her bed, her head on her crossed arms, her face towards the open window. It’s Spring and a breeze blows through making the curtains dance. Morgan’s eyes are bright with tears.
“I didn’t mean it, Mom.”
“They know you didn’t mean it sweetie. They aren’t upset with you.” Pepper sits on the end of the bed and Morgan sits up, crossing her legs and facing her mom.
“Sometimes I feel like they’re only here because dad isn’t and I,” Morgan looks down at her hands in her lap, her hair falling over her shoulders and covering her face, “And I feel bad because I would rather have Dad here then all of them.”
“Oh sweetie.” Pepper leans over and pushes Morgan’s hair back so she can see her face, “That’s nothing to feel bad about.”
Morgan looks up at her, a tear dropping from each eye, making their way down her cheeks, “Isn't it?” She asks in such a small voice that it’s like she’s four again and Tony is still here. He was always so good at wiping his daughter's tears away.
Pepper brushes her thumb across one cheek then the other, “I can almost guarantee every single one of them would rather your dad be here then them. They would give anything for you and your brothers to have him here.”
“What about you mom?”
Pepper sighs, “Almost anything. I wouldn’t give up you or Peter or the boys.”
Morgan crawls into her arms and they hold each other for a good while, “Is Peter okay?” Morgan asks after a bit.
“He’s fine sweetie. But Im sure he would love to come hug you and talk, you know how he is.”
Morgan smiles as she pulls back, wiping her face, “Will you send him up?”
Pepper stands and kisses the top of her daughters head, “I love you.”
Morgan smiles, “I love you too, Mom.” And just before she steps out the door she’s hears the words that make her breath hitch “Three thousand.”
Morgan graduates six months early, on a cold December morning and although she is enrolled for MIT the next fall, she is on a beach in another country twenty-four hours after graduating. She travels for the next eight months and only returns when it’s two weeks before the start of the fall semester. She graduates with her Bachelors in medicine in two years and continues working for Peter while traveling the world, healing millions with their minds and creations.
When the twins are nine years old, Pepper begins to feel the strain of being a single mom. The others don’t come around as often and it’s okay. She one hundred percent understands. Happy is still with her though and Peter takes the kids as often as he can. But then Roman runs away. And although she tries not to panic and tries not to involve the others. When twenty-four hours have gone by and no one has heard from him she begins to question whether he ran away or not and she allows Peter to call in the old and new Avengers. Everyone shows up. And she means everyone. Thor and T’Challa, Hulk, Captain America (young & old), Clint, and the Fantastic Four. Scott and Wanda and even Nick Fury himself walks in a few minutes late as usual and with a scowl on his face but all serious when he asks questions as Peter debriefs everyone.
It isn’t until they call in Doctor Strange a day later that they find him. T’Challa approaches her after everyone has reassured themselves that he has been found and is okay. He asks permission to speak with Roman alone and of course she allows it. She only learns they talk about the pressure of losing a father and following in his footsteps. This begins a friendship between the two that continues to grow as T’Challa realizes the brilliant mind in the boy.
The twins graduate high school at fourteen years old, however, Pepper refuses to let them enroll in college She has always felt the disconnect between Tony and the real world (when she first met him and the first ten years she worked for him, you know before the whole Iron Man scene) was because his dad forced him to attend college at such a young age. Fourteen year olds should not be expected to be surrounded by eighteen and nineteen year olds and make realistic sound decisions.
Instead they intern for Peter and travel with Morgan and became so immersed in the company that by the time they are seventeen, they don’t need to attend MIT, other than to continue the Stark legacy. Parker attempts it for a year before leaving all together and taking up the Iron Man persona, creating such a worldwide phenomenon that it is the number one story on every news outlet for a good two years straight.
And as much as it terrifies her, if anyone were to ask her, Pepper would have known it would be Parker since he was four years old and he first put the Iron Man mask on his head.
Roman goes behind the scenes. Creating and helping his brothers with their superhero antics. He spends two years in Wakunda and comes back with far more knowledge then he would have ever dreamed of if he had gone to MIT. He tells Pepper he is far too selfish to wear a superhero cape but she knows that’s not true. He just has more of her in him then his siblings. She explains how it takes a village and that those behind the scenes, like Shuri and Happy and now him, are just as important as those out there doing the hero gig.
And so her children all grow and bring her grandchildren and she lives a long, good life surrounded by her loved ones. Many go before her, Happy and Rhodey within a couple years of one another. Peter's Aunt May and finally Steve.
She starts to feel the exhaustion again.
But she fights it, pushing through another birthday, smiling as her grandkids graduate high school and carry on the Stark name. Great Grandchildren are born and she holds them in her fragile hands feeling so blessed.
But still the exhaustion is there. And she starts to think maybe she doesn’t have to fight it anymore.
Stephen Strange comes to her one warm evening and it’s odd because he never visits unless it’s for a mission. They share a warm cup of tea and talk about her kids and grandkids and then he stands to leave. His lays his hand atop of hers and says, “You’ve done so well and you’ve made him so proud. Every single day.”
Tears well in her eyes and she tries to respond but nothing comes out. Strange squeezes her hand, “He is waiting for you. Go home to him, Pepper.”
He is gone before she can respond but she understands and she is ready. She makes her way out to her chair by the lake. There is a fog already rolling in as the sun sets. Soon she sees him, walking towards her.
Her Tony.
She stands and his arms wrap around her. And she smiles.
Imagine: Being Life long friends with Sam and meeting Bucky unexceptionally when your in the middle of a life crisis
Being Sam Wilson best friend, and his family and your being family friends made your life fun growing up. It was like having a brother- but a brother you could send away too his home when you wanted too be more “girly” and play with his sister Sarah. Growing up with Sam it was a adventure he always got you in trouble. But it made life Fun.
You were one of the billions of people who Blimped. However when you returned. You were stunned too learn your husband Not only remarried but was married too the opposite sex of what you are. And that was a Curve ball you weren’t expecting. You and his new Partner fought for a week over who was the home wrecker. He stated you were since you were whipped from existence, while you said He was. Since you married your dum dum of a husband first. In the end your husband said he wasn’t going back too you.
Honestly you were relieved- you were having issues before you disappeared and you simply said that you wanted your stuff and you would leave... that’s when he informed you that he sold your stuff within a Week of dissapearing and giving your Favorite panda bear teddy bear too the neighbor who had a girl who was now five years old. You were MORE upset about the Teddybear then the marriage, or your stuff being Gone. Mr. P (your trusted companion thru out your life) has been their for you Thur heartbreak, the ups and the down. And you ere heartbroken that he gave up hope so quickly. But Mr. P being gone was the last straw.
luckily the neighbor understood and felt pity that you returned too Nothing and your husband left you for a man. And that you didn’t have a Job anymore. And basically had the cloths on your back and the few pieces of shirts you took from your husband. So they gave you back Mr. P.. who was missing a eye now and smelt of someone else. It didn’t smell like you and it made your return home too your parents depressing.
Sam was gone, he was blimped. Your friend Sarah was left with two little kids as you helped out. But when you got the divorce papers seeing your no good of a husband was claiming abandonment and wanting everything. You snapped. And you went too Europe for the summer.
Traveling, the food, the culture. Yu were Never alone in bed. It was a well needed mental break, No responsibility, No husband, No drama, just a break from reality. Then you returned home too see Sam was back. Captain America was Gone, and your life came crashing back. Fun was over. Time too restart your entire life.. and try too move on with your life.
Sam returned home as you and him had a few beers after work. Talking about life, the Avengers, Europe. (Most stories were glazed over. Mainly because you didn’t want too talk about the string of lovers you left behind in Europe that wasn’t you. You weren’t the sort of person too kiss or tell. Plus Sam was struggling he wasn’t mentioning it out loud but the lost of Tony Stark, and Now Steve he’s close friend in Washington it took a toll on your friend.
you use too ask about the Winter soldier The hot mysteries Killer who just Dissapeared and then was helping the avengers with the battle of basically life. Sam said he was a ass and that he wans’t much. You disagreed saying the mystery man was Hot. Which only made him question your values.
Sneaking over too the Wilson family was a common thing, you always walk right in, and they do vise versa. Today you got in early with a box of donuts from your mom shop you got up at 4 am too bake them as you got inside exhusted from your short shift it was almost eight am. As you got in seeing the boys were playing with a Captain America shield you walked over seeing someone sleeping on the sofa. Stepping over looking at it, ‘Holly crap that looks so real.”
“it is! Uncle Sam brought it over.”
“Shut up!” The youngest handed it too you as you held it. It was lighter then you imagined as you three played with it until you heard a deep voice. “Hey”
The three of you turned seeing the man awake he had a smile on his face as he waved at the three of you as you gasped, “Scatter!” The boys bolted as you put the shield down as you spoke, “Sorry-..” putting the shield down you spoke up, “I’m Y/N... ugh... sorry i walked in on the boys playing with it and- i couldn’t help myself.” He chuckled weakly shifting up as he said No worry as Sam walked into the kitchen.
“Hey Y/N” he reached over kissing your cheek it was a common greeting you both had. Since you were seven. You smield saying hey as he spoke, “what’s going on here? Your face is all red?”
Laughing weakly you shook your head, “Nothing! Nothing hey where is Sarah?”
“Not here- she went too the boat i think.”
You groaned hearing that. You were just at the docks at her boat looking for her- she wasn’t there. “No i was just there-“
“Sorry- oh so you meet?”
Shaking your head, “no- i mean i gave my name. He didn’t give his.”
Sam spoke, “good lets keep it that way.” You rolled your eyes, ‘your a prue gent Sam.” He rolled his eyes as the man chuckled as he spoke ‘I’m Bucky.”
Smiling at him Sam spoke, ‘hey- so.. Don’t mention the shield okay.”
he nudged his head at the shield that was leaning against the wall as you shook your head, “didn’t see a thing.. it’s not the real one is it?”
“yea- long story.”
you gasped gripping his arm, “Will I meet one of the Avengers? If I the Avengers are involved I’m going home too change out of my floured covered shirt.”
“No- No this is just Steve stuff.”
you meet Steve and even commented too Sam (when Steve went home) that if you weren’t married you would drool over Steve But at last.. you were married and couldn’t. But he was Fun too look at.
You nodded your head, “okay. Just- dont break it! With playing with it.”
Bucky grinned hearing that, you soon left as Bucky spoke, “So who’s that?”
“Family friend, she’s the kids godmother. And she’s like a sister so No flirting with her!’
“she’s not your special friend?” Bucky grinned seeing how he kissed her when he arrived as Sam spoke “gross No1 she’s like a sister she’s my best friend growing up she’s sensitive leave her alone.”
Later that day you arrived too Sarah’s Boat seeing Sam and Bucky were fixing it up for Her. As you walked over too the boat staying on the docks. Staring up at the two. they were having a drink as Bucky noticed you instantly wearing a plaid oversized shirt, some jean shorts that were covered in flour a grey -T shirt under the open plaid shirt and a grey hat. You wore sneaks as he smiled brightly, “hey Y/N.”
Smiling up at him saying Hey as Sam turned seeing you, “Yo Y/N what’s up?”
“where is your sister?! I haven’t seen her all day! It’s a small town!”
Sam rolled his eyes, “if you just carried a Phone you could joint the 21st century and Text her.”
Rolling your eyes at that. You stopped carrying your phone once you return from Europe mainly because you were getting Way too many text’s from the one night stands and everyone you wanted too talk too- you saw all day. You knew you should carry it for security and safety reasons. Plus playing music while you are alone in the morning working at the bakery would be nice. But you just keep forgetting. “I shouldn’t have too! She’s always other three places!”
Sam didn’t have the energy too fight but Bucky asked why you needed her so badly. As you spoke, “oh- Me and Sarah had planned something for tonight and I needed help with something nothing major I’ll keep looking for her-“
“Y/N!”
you all turned seeing Strewart dash over too you saying he had the fireworks . Which made you smile brightly, “seriously? “
“why you need fireworks?” Sam called out as you waved him off saying he would see later. You and Strew dashed off. Bucky couldn’t help but grin seeing you so gleeful.
“Hey- Stop looking at her-‘ Sam spat as Bucky chuckled softly saying okay.
It took you all day too find Sarah and too Get the “ritual” all set in motion. The Only thing your no good for husband had was your wedding dress. Mainly keep it because it was so exprience and he let he’s new Love wear it for a drag show. (The top was stained with makeup and it was in desperate need of some TLC ) but you got it.
Sarah suggested you just get ride of it. Which was such a marauded response. Get Ride of it? You couldn’t bar the thought of it being worn by anyone else. And the fact your husbands lover wore it. And ruined it. Made you decided too burn it. Too fully start anew.
your mom wasn’t thrilled with that idea. But Sarah was soon convinced espically seeing that the ball gown dress took majority of your closest.
it was her sons idea too attach it too a firecracker and fling it up into the air. And set it off. Which was a perfect idea.. which wasn’t very realistic So instead you figured. Fireworks by the water, and a huge Fire on the beach burning your dress and burning everything you had left of your former life.
Sam didn’t care one way or another that you did all this. He never personally liked your husband. By the time the fireworks were done, the parents went home and Sara’s kids went home which meant she went home. So Sam, Bucky and yu were sitting around the fire having drinks as you watched your dress burn.
“Y/N?” Bucky asked as you looked up too see him As he’s eyes brow frowned looking a t you, “you alright?”
nodding your head weakly you took a big gulp of beer as Sam spoke, “Hey maybe you should slow down.”
Shaking your head as you spoke, “I’m being reborn. Tonight Sammy.. No more stupid husband. i am officially Miss Y/N Y/M/N Y/L/N again! I dont feel guilty anymore.”
“what you have too feel guilty for?” Sam said as you shook your head, “it wasn’t working before i dissapeared. Honestly we fought all the time. He was so controlling and demanding. LIke remember when i said that Winter soilder dude was incredibly Hot?” Sam chuckled as Bucky was stunned as he spoke “yea i remember you mentioning it.”
“that Jack ass- got so jealous. And of Steve! He kicked me out one night just because I had lunch with him and you.- that guy was a jackass and who gives up on their love after a week?” taking another drink you looke d at Bucky you were Far passed just a little tipsy. You didn’t care how drunk you got. Sam was here. And you were safe. “Would you give up on me. If we were in love? After a week?”
Bucky took a drink of his beer debuting on his answer mainly because he was worried he was overstepping on something between you and Sam. “No” he finally said as he spoke, “No i wouldn’t..” you nodded your head as you reached over patting his shoulder, “that’s because your a true gentleman!” He chuckled as Sam spoke, “okay.. your clearly drunk if your calling him a gentlemen.”
you laughed as you spoke, “i may be drunk Sir! But i can tell a gentlemen when i see one-“ you got up as you stumbled as Bucky swooped up fast catching you as you grabbed his arms. Feeling the hard metal arm as you chuckled weakly. “Hey you got a metal arm like that incredibly hot guy.” He chuckled as he went too talk but you patted his face, “you know- I told Sam the guy probably didn’t have enough hugs growing up.. you know your suppose too get ten hugs a day? Doctors prove it helps-“ you stumbled again as Bucky spoke, ‘I’m sure that’s it.” You chuckled as Sam got up, “Okay Y/N time too go home.”
“okay.... hey your getting blurry-“ and with that you passed out. Bucky grabbed you before you fell down as Sam sighed, “she’s having a hard time adjusting— I’ll carry her-“
“I got her.. lead the way.”
Sam didn’t argue he iddn’t really want too carry you all the way home.he could do it. But Bucky wouldn’t stugggle as much. Plus he was slightly tipsy and wasn’t sure he could carry you- without dropping you.
Sam let you all into your house. As Bucky carried you too your room. As Sam followed seeing how Odd how careful Bucky was with you. When you settled into your bed you mumbled something as Bucky covered you up As he smiled too himself before turning and leaving with Sam.
Sam watched as they left.
“So she doesn’t knwo about me huh?”
“No- thought i can’t wait too tell her tomorrow” Sam stated as Bucky grinned weakly. He couldn’t wait too see you tomorrow
Pet Peeves in Thor Stuff
Inspired by a few posts doing this, so thought I’d vent and get it out here.
1. MCU Loki’s Name
I don’t care what the fan-run wikis say. All the official MCU material, including the text of the actual movies themselves, call him Loki Odinson or, for a brief period, Loki of Asgard. Loki Laufeyson is the name of a character from Marvel comics, and him having that name makes sense for that character’s backstory, which is very, very different from ‘adopted at birth and a late discovery’ MCU Loki. Incidentally, Norse Mythology Loki is not Loki Laufeyson, he’s Loki Laufeyjarson, which is a matronym because Laufey is his mother in most Norse Myths.
Loki in Thor 1 was Loki Odinson, Avengers was Loki of Asgard, and he certainly seemed fond of Odin again in Ragnarok and officially reclaimed the title Odinson in IW. He’s called Odinson over and over again in official Marvel publications such as the illustrated dictionary. Please stop using the wrong name. It’s weird and wrong to assume his name MUST default to his birth-father’s upon discovery of adoption, no matter what he’d been called his whole life. Especially when I think it’s pretty clear that Loki vehemently rejects any relationship with that namesake. He literally murdered Laufey to prove to Odin he had only one father, I don’t know how he could be more clear about his preferences.
And yes, I do think that this invalidates the fan-wikis as good sources of information. If they can’t get a name right, you probably shouldn’t trust anything in the article below it. Stick with canon publications.
2. The Transformation Spell
And heck, while we’re on this page, yes, the spell keeping Loki Asgardian is Odin’s. I don’t mind fanfic that posits a different origin, because hey, we’re just trying to have fun here, do what you want and I’ve probably read a lot of it already - but this is the canon explanation, please stop messaging me to tell me I’m wrong when I say it’s Odin’s spell doing it. Also, the reason it didn’t break when Odin died is because magic can outlive the caster, as Doctor Strange said. This ain’t the Phantom Menace.
(Incidentally, this dictionary is fun and even has entries for Huginn and Muninn!)
3. Step-brothers and Half-brothers are different things and neither is correct for Thor and Loki’s relationship. Nor is Odin Loki’s step-father.
I don’t see this in the Thor Fandom much, it’s more in articles and reviews I’ve read, but it’s kinda appalling how people don’t know the difference between brothers, step-brothers, half-brothers, and blood-brothers. Not being sure who your second cousin twice removed is I get, but I would hope that these are much more commonly understood. Just to get it off my chest, even though I’m sure no-one reading has ever thought different -
Step-brothers are when two unrelated families are joined by marriage. The children share no biological parents, but their parents are married. Unless Odin married Laufey at some point, he is not Loki’s step-father, and Thor is not Loki’s step-brother. (I mean, Odin’s had a long and probably very interesting and mysterious life, so I suppose it’s POSSIBLE he had a real bender at one point, but even if he had a Vegas wedding to the King of the Frost Giants and then decided to throw away the ring as if nothing had happened, the relationship he has with Loki has always been identified as ‘Father’).
Half-brothers are when children share one biological parent, but not two. So unless that bender with Laufey got REALLY crazy, Loki is not Thor’s half-brother either.
Blood-brothers - So some people will use this phrase to refer to people who are related by blood, but that’s sort of an older phrase. However, for most elementary school kids and in the context of Norse Mythology, it has another meaning - two people, unrelated by birth, who undergo a ceremony that involves blood mixing as an oath of brotherhood. Norse-Myth Loki is usually depicted as blood-brothers with Odin (and, in a few rare stories I read, with Thor, instead, but that’s a long story about how Thor was slowly starting to replace Odin as chief patriarch and therefore subsuming a lot of his traits and relationships). However, in the MCU, neither of these meanings currently applies to Thor and Loki. They are not blood related, and they’ve not undergone any blood oath ceremony either (although you can bet your briskets I’d LOVE to see that and it’s been in my general prediction box/wish-list since 2011. Imagine how happy it’d make us to see Thor and Loki choose to have their relationship, rather than feeling like it was Odin’s decision and they’re just living with it.).
Brothers - if in doubt about any brotherly relationship, just say this and you won’t be wrong. Thor and Loki are brothers, or adopted brothers, full stop. So no more step-half-blood nonsense.
And to be clear, if you’re writing fanfic that re-imagines this relationship, this is in no way directed at you. I’m more venting at the dearth of articles, presumably written by university graduates with an English degree, who can’t seem to keep this straight.
4. Brother is a Proper Noun
While I’m on this brother train, a small grammatical note - ‘Father’, ‘Mother’, and ‘Brother’, if being used in place of a name, are proper nouns, which means they’re capitalized.
Ex. “Stop smearing your booger on my shirt, Brother.”
It’s not capitalized if it’s not being used in place of a name, but is simply referring to the noun.
Ex. 2 “My brother once ate a whole goat without noticing it was still alive.”
Ex. 3 “I never knew we had a sister.”
Sorry, sorry - but I see this mistake a lot while I’m reading and I daresay I make it myself all the time!
5. Frigga isn’t perfect
Real talk, one of my least favourite tropes in fiction is ‘Woman on a Pedestal’. I really feel it denies female characters agency if they’re made out to be perfect lovely angels loved by everyone. I’ve read a ton of great fics that explore the flaws Frigga is suggested to have in the MCU but never got the screen time to deal with, and they are some of my favourites. I’ve also read a ton where she’s endlessly patient, wise, righteous, and oh-so-much-better than that heartless Odin or oaf Thor, if only she’d been in charge the whole time, nothing would have gone wrong! It’s a matter of taste and I’d never tell anyone to not write what makes them happy, but I really do think Frigga’s a better character when you engage with her mistakes and oversights and less-than-noble aspects. Women in the MCU have really gotten a short shaft when it comes to character arcs, flaws, and general humanity. Almost all the mothers are on pedestals in it, and with that comes a lack of introspection. Frigga could be argued to be in that category, but at least there is some material to suggest her imperfections that can be exploited. (Unlike Quill and Stark’s mothers, say.)
I leave it up to everyone to interpret the character for themselves, but for me her weaknesses are that she
tends to deflect blame for her choices onto others, particularly Odin.
sometimes acts to smooth things over without really acknowledging hurt, either caused or experienced.
has a manipulative streak and isn’t afraid to leverage her sons’ affection for her to get them to do what she wants, which is often ‘smoothing things over’.
probably spoiled her kids a bit
has an allergy to giant knives
Personally I like these things about her. They come from her life as a peace-maker, both in her role as a politician and a Queen and in her role in the family. She’s loyal, clever, witty, a confidant, and had the best scene in Endgame by a long mile. Frigga is the mom we’ve seen the most of, and I would love to see more in any form.
AH.... that felt good. I might do another post on my problems with how Thor is sometimes portrayed, but that’s a whole other, very personal, thing. Thanks for reading this dumb thing.
Essential Avengers: Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1-3
May, 1984
THE WAR BEGINS
Oof, here we go.
Just gotta replicate the pace that let me do the Hawkeye miniseries in one go, three times in a row.
This is probably too much effort considering its Secret Wars (or more accurately Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars) and maybe there’s not going to be a lot of big changes from this in the Avengers book to really justify it.
But we’re getting Jim Shooter writing the Avengers and his non-consecutive runs were a lot better than I had remembered. And it continues the theme he had from the Avengers book.
It just makes sense in a nonsense way to cover this story.
Last relevant time in Avengers! Acting Completely Normal Vision warned the Avengers about some weird, possibly hostile energy surges right in time for an energy surge to surge energetically in Central Park.
When the Avengers went to investigate, they found a weird structure that looked like a techy coliseum maybe. When some of the Avengers wandered into it (apparently the most bankable Avengers? Sucks to be Vision and Wanda, shrug) they vanished.
In the next issue, after several days, these heroes returned, speaking of a secret war they fought. Weird stuff like She-Hulk taking the Thing’s place on the Fantastic Four happened. In other books, Spidey got a cool new suit.
Would you know more?
After being raptured in their various books, the missing superheroes all end up on one of those distinctive structures like the one that appeared in Central Park, except IN SPACE.
Its cool that the Avengers will have some company.
We’ve got a terrific 3/4ths of the Fantastic Four, the X-Men (including Lockheed but not including Kitty Pryde for some reason), the Avengers, Iron Man, Spider-Man, the totally Articulate Hulk, and hilariously Magneto is also here.
Maybe Secret Wars is just setting up the most awkward moment in the universe, as a prank show.
I think I’d enjoy a big event that turned out to be a prank show at the last minute. The fan discontent. Imagine.
Everyone introduces themselves to each other but mostly the audience and Ben Grimm claims his new codename as the Easter Bunny.
Checking, marvel wiki doesn’t have Easter Bunny listed as one of Ben’s known aliases. Cowards.
Looking up into space, Captain America spots another one of the totally cool constructs and Professor X scans that it contains EEEEEEEVIL.
Specifically Amora the Enchantress, Ultron, the Wrecking Crew, the Absorbing Man, the Lizard, VICTOR VON DOOOOOM, Kang the Conqueror, Doctor Octopus, and Molecule Man. Also, hilariously, Galactus is there.
I’m more convinced than ever that this is a prank show.
You know what would be more hilarious? If Punisher ended up on this construct.
The distribution of villains is kind of odd though. Galactus and Doctor Doom map to the FF. Doctor Octopus and the Lizard to Spider-Man. Ultron, Molecule Man, and Kang are Avengers foes. The Absorbing Man and the Wrecking Crew can go a couple ways but started off as Thor villains. And Amora is usually a Thor villain but supposedly has chilled out around this time or at least is less of a pain than her horny sister.
No X-Men villains. Because Magneto is chilling with them in the generally heroic pod.
Also, all the heroes were raptured from Earth while the villains were grabbed from Earth, from space, from Asgard, resurrected just to be here, or from the FUTURE.
I know marketing is wagging the dog but be consistent, secret organizer who we don’t know yet.
The Thing points out that Magnet is off-sides, re: being in the hero construct, and Magneto is like ‘hey, chill out dudes’ and denies specifically doing murders.
Magneto: “I know not what power transported me here from my secret lair, nor why I was placed among you -- but I find it more appropriate to ask why such as you were judged fit to be placed in my presence!”
Oof.
Burn.
Then the conversation is put on halt on account of the wildest shit any of them have ever seen.
An entire galaxy vanishes but probably not due to a wave of anti-matter.
Thor: “It’s gone! Gone -- ! Swept away like dust before some unseen, giant hand!”
And then around that last star left unswept, various chunks merge together to form some sort of world, perhaps for battle.
A nice touch for later is that you can definitely see that one of the chunks is a stray chunk of city.
Some of the villains start squabbling because close quarters, ego, etc.
But Ultron goes hey we’re allowed to fight? I’m the best at that.
Ultron: “I am Ultron! I do not understand the events transpiring! I do not understand how I came to be resurrected... nor how I came to be here! Nothing computes... Insignificant! I am Ultron! My purpose is to slay that which lives. You are all living things, ergo -- Ultron must destroy you!”
With the benefit of having read all the Avengers up to now, I feel that Ultron got up on the wrong side of the resurrection a little.
He’s not not like this but he’s not usually this turned on?
(Then again, maybe he just came back cranky)
DOOM grabs and shakes Molecule Man to do something about this because given enough time even the mighty DOOM might fall before Ultron.
Ultron is famously annoying to defeat, what with that adamantium.
But Molecule Man is in therapy after the Avengers kicked his shit and Tigra yelled at him for being a punk. He doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
So Doom with all his brilliant genius tells MM a cool way to help out that won’t hurt anyone. Directly.
Using his Molecule Man power over molecules to lightly toss Ultron into Galactus.
So that Galactus goes ‘who the fuck scuffed my boots’ and rips out all the energy in Ultron’s Ultron.
He can do that.
Why wouldn’t he? If he can do that to a planet, he can do it to a pissbaby robot. Even one apparently containing more power than an atom bomb.
Then, because this is one of those plots where things are always thenning, a rift opens in the nothingness of space and a heavenly esque light shines out. A warbly voice commands the action figures beat each other up.
I mean. Its more like
The Beyonder: “I am from beyond! Slay your enemies and all you desire shall be yours! Nothing you dream of is impossible for me to accomplish!”
But you have to admire that this toy commercial of a comic book is being honest and upfront about being a story where action figures bonk off of each other.
Galactus just hears ‘i can finally shake off these persistent forever munchies’ and flies off to demand prepayment for action figure bonking, with DOOM following behind him.
The Beyonder speaks up warning Galactus that hey, personal space. And that a guy that can effortlessly wipe out a galaxy is gonna have a sweet barrier but Galactus wants the hunger pangs gone and does not listen.
DOOM recognizes a bad idea when he sees one once in a while and hangs back but still gets blown out of space by the force of Galactus bonking off the Beyonder’s barriers.
Captain America: “They were swatted back like flies!”
Professor X: “To the Beyonder, even Galactus is less than a fly, Captain!”
Interruption dealt with, the Beyonder gets the show on the road and sends the two constructs to different parts of the patchwork planet.
The Marvel Super Heroes And Magneto land on some hill and quickly make sure that there are no villains excepting Magneto around.
With Magneto around, the non-X-Men raise an objection to Magneto being around.
He sank a Russian submarine with all hands back in X-Men #150 but he insists that it was self-defense and also they started it.
The X-Men’s position is ‘hey he’s a jerk but he’s our jerk plus we could use his help? The bad guys get GALACTUS, how is that fair?’
Well, they don’t say it but they’re probably thinking it.
And Hawkeye decides to be a little racist today.
Hawkeye: “You mutants stick together, huh? Well, sticking to a blood-soaked maniac like him doesn’t speak well of you, pal!”
Dude, Clint. Your dear old friend is Wanda.
Wait, why ISN’T Wanda here? Did the toy people really not want her? Fools. Her husband is toyetic as all get out.
Also, point of order, Wolverine? If anyone qualifies as ‘hey he’s a jerk but he’s our jerk!’ here its you.
Johnny “good life choices” Storm decides he’ll just kick Magneto’s ass and end the debate but yeah. Yeah, no. Magneto makes a fool of him.
And then Magneto decides eff this noise and flies off.
With Magneto alienated (good job, guys), Professor X decides this group needs some dang leadership and throws a nomination to Reed Richards. Reed defers since he’s thinking of Sue, left at home and not able to participate in the event.
Wasp, the cool leader of the Avengers, nominates instead Captain America.
Wasp: “We’re off in a strange land, up to our ears in a little secret war that may decide the fate of the universe! Some people don’t know me well! They might have doubts... and there’s no room for that!”
I’m baffled that there’s people here who don’t know Wasp who has been heroing since the 60s but sure. Cap(tain America) probably gets more crossovers and whatever.
I mean, heck, we’re talking a group of heroes consisting of the Avengers (who she already leads), the Fantastic Three (who she’s well acquainted with), and the X-Men (who I’m sure she’s met, although awkwardly its going to later be revealed that Wasp is in the Hellfire Club, but only the sex parts).
And I guess Wolverine’s extensive backstory with Cap doesn’t exist yet because Wolverine isn’t keen on him being the leader, describing him as the least of the assembled heroes. When Hawkeye is right there!
I kid because I love.
Meanwhile, DOOM wakes up adjacent to Galactus ankle and heads to a nearby fortress which he correctly assumes is where the villains have ended up.
Wait, the heroes get beamed down to a random hill while the villains get sent to an advanced fortress with weaponry and we later learn vehicles sold separately?
Kinda stacking the deck, the Beyonder.
You gave the villains GALACTUS and A FORTRESS PLAYSET right out of the gate.
The other villains tell Doom that they’ve (mostly) decided that he should be their leader. But Doom has bigger fish to fry than the prizes that the Beyonder is offering.
In typical Doomesque fashion, he wants the whole kettle. But the other villains what with their petty concerns think he’s too afraid to fight.
So he ditches.
He goes to steal-borrow a spaceship and even though he hates the thought, takes off to go talk to Richards. And then Kang shoots him out of the sky with a GIANT GUN THAT THE VILLAIN FORTRESS ALSO HAS? to stop him from allying with the heroes.
Said (marvel super) heroes see the distant explosion and fly as a group in the most hilarious way possible to check it out.
God, I have always loved this image. Its squished down into the bottom third of the page but its a delight.
They find Doom sprawled in the crash site, rambling that he’ll only speak to RICHARRRRRDS and about the Beyonder’s power. But Cap offends Doom mightily but offering him a hand up and because Doom sees pity in Cap and RICHARRRRRRDS eyes.
So he blasts the heroes and fucks off.
How very Bakugou of him.
And right as the heroes recover from that, a bunch of villains arrive to get this secret war started.
I have a fondness for this particular issue. For a long while, issue 1 was the only issue of Secret Wars I could find. So I just had the start of this story with all these non-Spider-Man non-X-Men heroes I barely knew cliffhangering into an attack by villains I really didn’t recognize except for Doc Ock and the Lizard.
It was a window into another side of the Marvel Universe. And for child me, this first issue worked perfectly to intrigue me. All these characters, the very straightforward conflict, all the complications that immediately pop up like Magneto, Galactus, and Doom. Alas, small child resources.
June, 1984
PRISONERS of War!
The heroes react slowly to the sudden villain attack but thankfully, the villains aren’t working together well. Unthankfully, half of the heroes were already knocked out by the first attack.
Meanwhile, over at Doctor Doom’s side of the plot, he flies back over to where Galactus just in time to see him finally rouse from being slapped down by the Beyonder.
Galactus floats to his feet and wanders off.
Doom: “He ignored me! As though I were a gnat buzzing at his feet! And so I am... Just as all of us, even Galactus himself, are but insects to the all-powerful Beyonder! Thus, the others have chosen to play the Beyonder’s simple game -- thereby, in effect, paying homage to him. Should I, too, pay homage? Should I worship at the feet of this god-like being -- or chose another path... one only Doom would dare!”
I think anyone that knows Doom knows which option he’s gonna choose.
He heads back to the villain fortress and finds Ultron’s deactivated body and decides Doom can use this.
Meanwhile, back at the first secret battle of the secret war, the heroes rally and start fighting back under Cap(tain America)’s leadership.
She-Hulk even gets a designated girl fight with the only female villain on the villain team.
I’d complain, I would. But at least She-Hulk isn’t the only heroine on the hero side.
She-Hulk: “Hiya! I’m the She-Hulk! You must be the Enchantress! Gee, I’ve heard so much about you -- ! You’re a not-nice lady!”
Enchantress: “A green woman? Is there no end to the varieties of mortals?”
The Enchantress magic slaps She-Hulk away and comments that she could crush She-Hulk physically but its beneath her.
Yeah, all Asgardians have some level of super strength, that’s right. Even the squishy wizards.
But all She-Hulk heard was, ‘someone I can really punch!’
She-Hulk: “I don’t often duke it out with someone solid enough to really unload on -- and slow enough to let me! Oh, wow! That was, like tubular, you know -- to the max!”
Uh. Jen, are you okay? Did you have a stroke? You don’t usually talk so much in Mario World secret world levels.
I think maybe Jim Shooter didn’t have a good grasp on her. I don’t think he’s ever written for her. And the other heroes mostly don’t vary too much from generic hero speaking patterns. Add some smart for smart characters, add some rude to Wolverine, and so on.
The battle wraps up with Kang, the Enchantress, and the Wrecking Crew captured and the rest of the villains fleeing when the battle didn’t go their way.
Cap sends Storm off to scout for a cool playset that they can use as shelter and she does so, noting that the winds on Battleworld are super easy to control. Like Battleworld was created to create ideal fighting conditions for everyone. Pretty neat, the Beyonder.
Storm finds a particularly rad fortress (”Bigger than fifty-four and a half Pentagons, I’d estimate!” Wow!) and the heroes move in.
I unironically enjoy how toyetic this story is with the fortresses and the vehicles and the weapons. Because I’m almost positive that Mattel barely capitalized on it.
There were only two playsets. Pitiful.
Over in their new headquarters, Reed stashes the captured villains in some form of psychostasis which “works by controlling aggression through brainwave modulation!”
He also sticks Enchantress in a healing pod to address that nasty case of being She-Hulked right in the face. Nothing will salve her ego though.
Captain America: “It’s no wonder that the name Mister Fantastic is renowned for compassion as well as courage! You give added meaning to the word hero, Richards!”
Whenever someone loudly announces that Reed is super compassionate, it makes me feel like they’re overcompensating.
Nobody ever makes note of, say, Captain America’s compassion.
With the prisoners (of war? Is that the whole reason for the title?) accommodated, Cap calls everyone for a meeting in a cool meeting dome he found which has a small waterfall for aesthetic and so everyone has to yell to be heard.
Wolverine yells that they should mop up the rest of the villains and get this over with.
Not mentioning that in order to “win it” they’d have to kill the villains, which none of the heroes have shown any interest in doing so far.
Cap(tain America) replies that A) planet big and they have no idea where the villains got to. And B) the remaining villains slash antagonists are Galactus, Doctor Doom, Molecule Man, Doctor Octopus, the Wrecker, the Absorbing Man, and Magneto. Not really people you mop up.
In a fun logistics bit, Cap sends out a patrol to make sure the area is secure but he also sends out two additional groups to find if there are any places in this fortress they can sleep and whether there's any... food.
Makes me imagine a Secret Survival War where the sides have to wrestle over limited resources.
Hours later, the villains that escaped the fracas arrive back at their fortress.
I’m sort of confused here.
Maybe it took so long because they had to make sure they weren’t followed. Or maybe because they didn’t have the sweet tripod vehicle anymore. But think about the flow of events of: everyone beamed down to Battleworld > Doom ditches the villains and gets shot down > heroes investigate and Doom ditches > villains show up for cliffhanger fight.
The villain fortress should be pretty close to where that fight took place. And then the heroes find a nearby fortress of their own so their fortress should be pretty close to the villain fortress. Maybe not in the same neighborhood but surely the same zip code.
Anyway, they find that while they were gone, Doom swanned in and renamed the place the Doombase.
If they have problems with it, they can talk to his Ultron.
Which I’m surprised he didn’t rename Doomtron.
Doom also tells them that he’s in charge now.
Absorbing Man: “Aw! Who gives a hoot! I need a meal an’ sleep! You wanna be in charge, Doom? Okay by me!”
If you think about it, this is just some steps added what the villains wanted all along.
They wanted Doom to be their leader but he told them he had bigger fish to fry and fucked off. Now he’s fucked back on and told them all that he’s their leader. They initially object before reconsidering due to Doomtron but, yeah, its all gone full circle.
Doom is a lot more cordial to Molecule Man though.
Doom: “Molecule Man... uh, Mr. Reece, I believe it is? I trust you were not inconvenienced.”
Molecule Man: “Well, being absolute master of molecules I can just assimilate molecules when I want, so I never have to be hungry, and I can just shoo away dirt molecules, so I’m always nice and clean -- but I am tired!”
Doom: “I have prepared a special chamber for you! I hope you like it!”
Molecule Man: “If not, I can always reconstruct the molecules -- !”
Heh.
Nice to see Jim Shooter able to follow up on the trajectory he sent Molecule Man on.
The rest of the villains head off but Doctor Octopus, the only other brain cell in this group, hangs back to talk to DOOM.
He wants to know what he plans to do about Galactus and then shows Doom on the biggest screen TV that Galactus is standing on a mountain glowing with an awesome power.
Doom just retorts that his plans are for his forces to triumph.
Doctor Octopus: Something tells me he’s got ambitions that dwarf merely triumphing in the Beyonder’s little contest! The question is whether he will destroy us in trying to achieve them -- or immediately after fulfilling them?!
Like I said, the only other brain cell in this group.
Meanwhile, while Magneto secretly sneaks into the hero fortress for Reasons, the heroes have a quiet moment that lets this Secret Wars biz really sink in.
Wasp: “I’d be having tea in my studio now, Jenny... And lunch on my patio tomorrow... This... um... situation we’re in... is kind of... much, you know? I feel there’s just a little thin wall inside me holding back a flood of despair!”
Its a nice touch, if intentional, that Wasp only admits this kind of thing now that she’s passed off the leadership responsibilities to Captain America. Its been a recurring character beat that she’s been keeping these sorts of worries to herself as chairwoman.
Over in another part of the fortress, Cyclops complains that he was right in the middle of his dang honeymoon when he was yanked into this event.
Cyclops: “I don’t know about you, Richards, but more than angry or afraid, I feel cheated! I -- I was on the verge of real happiness...”
Oof. This really sets the tone for his marriage with Madelyne Pryor.
Spider-Man and the Human Torch even have a little conversation.
Spider-Man: “You mean it doesn’t shake you, Torch, being here? What if we don’t get home?”
Human Torch: “The Fantastic Four have been off on space missions a couple of times, Spider-Man! We’ll get back! Believe me!”
I like when they’re friends.
So, I’m not sure what Magneto’s plan actually was. He was going to sabotage the fortress’ fusion generator as a distraction but Spider-Man’s Spider-Sense Spider-Alerts him to shenanigans afoot and he runs off to the power plant while Johnny Storm goes to get the other heroes.
Magneto decides to abandon whatever his plan was and captures Wasp as a consolation prize.
Gasp, another prisoner of war!
The Thing tries to give chase but inexplicably turns back to normal, smooth skinned Ben Grimm.
Also, Magneto escapes with the Wasp.
It’s like the aardvark says, you can get what you want and still not be happy.
Captain Marvel is holding the randomly anti-mutant ball for Hawkeye here and comments that none of the X-Men showed up to help stop Magneto.
Cap(tain America) tells her to belay that.
Captain America: “Let’s keep our minds on solving problems, not creating more!”
And they can’t even go after Magneto or rescue the Wasp right now because they have bigger problems: Galactus glowing with an awesome power and a massive storm that’s forming on Battleworld.
July, 1984
TEMPEST WITHOUT, CRISIS WITHIN!
The Beyonder has thrown in a nice stage hazard to keep things fresh in the form of a massive storm raging on Battleworld, with lighting that shatters mountains and winds that could tear someone’s limbs clean off.
Or perhaps its the unintentional result of just slapping a planet together out of random stuff you have lying around. The climate must be shot to shit.
I like it either way. Secret Wars has a lot of very toyetic collisions between groups of characters so its nice when Battleworld itself manages to be an obstacle.
Over in his giant U-shaped fortress, Magneto finally unwraps Wasp from the ball of random metal crap he has her in.
He lets her wander around until she finds him so that he can be all casual and eating a space scone.
Magneto: “Do not bother trying to attack me, my dear! My person is magnetically shielded!”
Wasp: “Well, la-de-da!”
Wasp: -blows up his space scone- “You think I have to strike at you directly to hurt you, monster?”
Hilarious spite, thy name is Janet van Dyne.
She also makes the point that magnetic shielding or no, she could bring this whole room down. Her being able to knock over a small house with her pew pew hasn’t stopped being true.
Magneto hastens to ask her not to do that because neither of them want to be out in the storm outside.
Besides, he just wants to talk! And flirt!
Magneto: “You are obviously a woman of intelligence and understanding as well as great beauty -- and I am not the monster you believe I am -- which is precisely what I wish to discuss!”
Wasp: “Oh? My intelligence, understanding and beauty or your non-monsterhood?”
Magneto: “Why... both!”
Back at the hero base (which is apparently ROUGHLY THE SIZE OF CHICAGO?? I want that playset), the storm has almost completely flooded the area, leaving just the top dome and such poking above the water.
The storm keeps dropping chunks of mountain at the base but Thor is standing on top, protecting it while grinning like a loon.
Captain Marvel even speculates that Thor could calm the storm but is whipping it up into a greater frenzy instead. Those storm gods, amirite?
Hawkeye is also standing by, with his explosive arrow, thinking to himself that if Thor fails, Hawkeye will totally save the day.
I don’t know whether that’s sad or endearing.
Mostly though he’s trying to distract himself from thinking about the new wife he left behind.
Cap, Reed, and Hulk are watching the villain base because apparently they do know where it is. The storm is keeping the villains in too but Cap figures they’ll pull one desperate attack as soon as the storm breaks.
They’ve already lost four of their dudes. Plus, Galactus isn’t a team player.
Spider-Man is just swinging around, enjoying how good for swinging the random technological pipes and tubes and whatsits are when he stumbles upon the X-Men having a secret meeting.
Professor X has decided, possibly on the basis of two (2) rude comments from Hawkeye and Captain Marvel, that the X-Men just don’t belong here and that they’d be better off going and teaming up with Magneto.
This... sure is a take.
Rogue comments that the Avengers don’t trust her because of that time she kicked their asses collectively. Which, hey, very possibly. They haven’t really had a thing to say about you though. They’ve mostly been grouchy about Magneto.
Which is kinda born out by the way he tried to blow up their base and definitely kidnapped the Wasp?? And is even now aggressively eating scones at her?
That’s the Magneto you guys want to go join because he’s more your people than the Fantastic Avengers and friends are?
You know, there’s a pattern I sometimes see with the X-Men where they loudly insist that the other superheroes don’t help them and don’t care about mutant stuff while at the same time doing shit like this.
“Should we get Reed Richards, smartest dick in the world to help with the legacy virus or the techno-organic virus Stryfe shot into Xavier? NAHHHH Beast can handle it.”
“Should we stick with the other superheroes or go hang with Magneto instead in a cool mutants only U-shaped fortress? Well, U is the coolest letter that isn’t X...”
If you squint, you can definitely see Krakoa all the way in the future.
Anyway, Spider-Man overheard all of this and goes ‘I’M TELLING!’
Wolverine tries to tell him that snitches get stitches but the thing is?
Spider-Man is ridiculous. He’s a ridiculously good combination of skills and powers which lets him make chumps out of entire groups at a time.
He’s embarrassed the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and now he’s about to embarrass the X-Men.
After making them all feel foolish, Spider-Man gets away and goes to tell Reed what that doody-head Xavier said when Xavier uses his psychic powers to just wipe the entire encounter out of Spider-Man’s memory.
Yeah, it’s to cover their imminent blowing off but also? I don’t think he wants anyone else to find out how badly his X-Men just got stomped.
Psychics are too OP, I tell you what.
In fairness IN FAIRNESS, the X-Men kind of have the right to fuck right off if they wish. I don’t even know what it had to be in secret. In fact, doing it in secret is a massive dick move of its own for reasons.
What would the Fantastic Avengers have done if the X-Men had just said ‘hey we’re heading out’? Would they have put them in stasis tube jail? I doubt it.
Professor X made the decision to handle this the stupidest way for whatever reason. That scamp.
Speaking of Magneto, he’s over at the U-Lair turning down a partnership offer from DOOM. So, hey, he has standards.
Wasp has become less ‘i’ll blow up this room and your breakfast’ about him over the course of whatever the hell they discussed in their offscreen chat.
Magneto even starts to make out with her and Wasp is like ehhhhhhhhhh what the fuck why not.
Why is this happening?
I guess he has a...................... magnetic personality?
Eh? Eh??
No, but seriously, I do have a theory that I heard someplace but it’ll have to wait.
What’s weird is that there’s a Marvel What If about some spinoff babies that come about if the heroes and villains got stuck on Battleworld and never managed to leave.
Wasp has a son with Human Torch. Which is pretty weird and comes from nowhere. I guess a lot can happen during a massive time skip. My point being though, its weird that they didn’t have a Wasp/Magneto baby instead given the weird chemistry they have here.
Meanwhile, over at DOOMBASE, DOOM has some women in giant tubes.
That’s So Doom.
Doctor Doom: “All is ready -- ! This alien technology, so rich, so subtle... so easily harnessed to serve my purpose... Energy, tapped from the raging tempest... And two mortal subjects who dare to gamble for power -- knowing that to lose is death, for truly, here I shall test the limits of power a human body can contain! With the throwing of a switch... so -- the die is cast! Hear me -- ! Power must be seized -- ! Crave it! Welcome it! Drink it in, despite the pain... or it will destroy you.”
And thus are Volcana and Titania created!
Talk about lasting effects of Secret Wars! Titania is going to be around forever! Mostly annoying She-Hulk!
Where did Doom find two random women to give superpowers?
Denver, Colorado.
No, seriously.
That city chunk we saw as Battleworld formed? That’s Denver, Colorado, USA, EARTH.
Why isn’t there a miniseries or one-shot about a normal ass civilian from Denver having to deal with OH MY GOD WHERE DID EARTH GO?
I actually read an interesting thing re: this scene. It exists because Mattel asked Marvel to introduce some new female characters so Shooter wrote in these two and a third who I’ll get to when I do.
Mattel then promptly used none of these characters for the associated toyline.
The toyline, in fact, used none female characters at all. It made toys of characters who weren’t in the story but did not have a single female character.
So its very weird that they asked Marvel to introduce some but I’m not going to knock the results.
Doom introduces these two new characters to the other villains.
Hilariously, Absorbing Man guesses that Doctor Doom just made women from scratch. Because doesn’t it sound like something he could do?
Volcana and Molecule Man immediately hit it off, her being attracted to his sensitivity and him being attracted to... positive attention at all, I guess?
He muses that he could easily stop the storm outside, because molecules, but his therapist told him to let nature take its course. “Unless Doom asks me to!”
And Titania and Absorbing Man. They don’t hit it off. She either wants to hit him or hit that and its not clear and it might be both.
(Spoilers: Its both)
Titania: “You! Absorbing Man! You look like the toughest man here! Get up!”
Absorbing Man: “Whatcha got in mind?”
Titania: “I’m going to do anything I want to you! Everything I always wanted to do to everybody who used to be bigger and stronger than me! Maybe I’ll just play with you... or maybe I’ll make you eat dirt... or maybe...”
Absorbing Man: “Woman, if you got somethin’ to prove, prove it tomorrow against the guys we’re fightin’!”
Titania: “You’re backing down?”
Absorbing Man: “Nope! I just ain’t getting up! I got nothin’ to prove... to a dame!”
Would you believe that they become one of the healthiest and most stable romantic relationships in Marvel?
Speaking of weird relationships, back over at hero base, Thor goes and pops the lid on Enchanteress’ healing tube because he’s bored and wants to talk to a peer. A god peer.
Enchantress is at first more characteristically worried about what her face looks like after being She-Hulked.
But she then creates a portal so she and Thor can go have a chat.
Later, it’s morning and Hulk has been too busy stressing over losing his Banner smarts to actually keep watch or wake up Cap for watch like he was supposed to.
So when the villains ram an airship into the hero base, the heroes are not at all prepared.
Titania hurls a giant slab of wall through the room the Terrific Three are sharing, breaking Johnny Torch’s arm and ribs and knocking out the other two. He manages to get himself and co out of danger by melting through the floor.
Meanwhile, She-Hulk is carrying a big heavy as she’s been doing since the previous night and is caught unaware by Volcana who blasts her off her feet and then collapses the room on top of her.
Doctor Octopus knocks out Captain Marvel who is in the hot springs dome but gets chased away by Hawkeye, claiming that long-range firepower is his weakness.
I’m stunned at the implication that Doc Ock is one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous foes but could be scared off by Hawkeye while Spider-Man could pretty easily drop Clint’s ass. There’s some rock-paper-scissors nonsense at play here.
Spider-Man and Iron Man are also taken unawares by Ultron but manage to hide under some rubble.
Hulk leaps into the fray at Molecule Man and Doom but Cap convinces him to fall back to a defensible position.
The villains reconvene with all the captured villains freed except Enchantress (since she fucked off to have a chat with Thor) and the heroes scattered and buried under various rubbles. How the fortunes of Secret War turn.
Sure would have been nice if the X-Men had been around to help or if they mentioned they wouldn’t be. Sure would have been.
Doom: “We have accomplished much here today! And to finish it, we shall level this place so that no stone remains on stone!”
No wonder Mattel didn’t make a playset of this base! Dammit Doom, you’re ruining the merchandising!
'This DC comics Character' 'That Pulp Fighter' How would The Shadow fair against Mrs. Frizzle?
(God yes please pitch me weird crossovers outside of superheroes and pulp, I'll cross over The Shadow with literally anything).
AGAINST Mrs Frizzle? That's not a fight he, or anyone else for that matter, is winning. There's not really anything they would have to fight over to begin with, at most there'd be some initial discomfort on The Shadow's end over child endangerment but Frizzle clearly has everything under control with her godlike expertise on everything and magic. Frizzle works on Genie/Mary Poppins rules, and I guess ultimately there's not much place for her in a typical Shadow story because chances are those would either be ignored or she would just solve everything in a flash. But I absolutely would love for these two to be in a story together, I definitely can imagine them as allies, even friends, rare as they may be for The Shadow.
The main thing they have in common, besides the aquiline schnozz and fondness for dressing up, is that they are both the extraordinary figures at the center of narratives usually starred by other people, the extremely resourceful and clever and theatrical weirdos who have everything figured out and whom you never know too much about, but you do know they are on the side of good. They may be in vastly different settings and with some very different areas of expertise, but that's always what makes for the best teaching partnerships.
I'm extremely fond of narratives where The Shadow takes on a teaching role, and now more than ever I'm convinced that I find the idea of him aging and retiring into a supporting/secondary role much more preferable than him just staying a grim avenger of the night forever (not that he ever truly stops being The Shadow, he may have a thousand faces but The Shadow is forever the only true identity he has and always had). He'd consider Frizzle an indispensable, if highly unorthodox, force of good to have on his side for any circumstance, and Frizzle would encourage this mythical being of mystery settling down to just pass on knowledge to the next generations (it's what she did, after all). And if the kids are going to be in danger sometimes, it's only sensible to have more than one mystical protector looking after them.
I'm imagining a lot of scenarios where The Shadow shows up in one guise or another as a character in the typical Magic School Bus adventures. Not as The Shadow specifically, no, I imagine neither him nor Frizz would want to bring that particular bit of darkness to the kids until it was necessary, but in any hundred other faces he may use, and you could actually tailor them depending on the episode. Like you have one episode starting off with the bus on it's way somewhere, and in the front of it Ms Frizzle is talking to a mustachioed janitor with dual slingshots in his pockets (because of course he's not gonna be carrying guns around schoolchildren in a kid's show) and Arnold asks one of his classmates who is this guy, and they reply: "Why, that's Old Man Fritz! He's a janitor at our school, haven't you seen him before?" to which he replies no, he hasn't, none of them have, and they all agree and note that's weird, but promptly ignore him.
Frizzle wants to teach the kids a bit of Russian history so she invites a friend of hers named Kentov Allardvitch who speaks Russian to help them out on field, whether that's a tour through a museum or a travel through time. She walks up to class one day and tells them that, as a safety precaution in an emergency and there's no adult to count on, she's calling in Fritz to teach them some lockpicking basics. "I loze my hause keyz all ze time, ja?" and Arnold could swear that he didn't have this thick of an accent the last time he heard the two talking, but all the other kids find it really funny and it never gets brought up. None of the kids notices when he shows up in other guises.
And considering all the kids on Magic School Bus have different talents and strengths and so on, I imagine The Shadow would most like to encourage that they see said talents and strengths be developed to the best of their ability, seeing as that's what he did with the agents. The agents could all play roles too. Maybe Frizz wants to take the kids on a tour through Chinatown, and when they get there, they meet up with Dr Roy Tam who's all too happy to share the history of the community with them. Jericho Druke helps them on a trip through Harlem and a tour through Black History Month, and when the bus gets stuck somewhere, he uses his bordering on superhuman strength to lift it along with the kids helping out, and thus was learned today's lesson about teamwork. The kids all love Shrevy because he always has really funny stories to tell and likes to race Frizz sometimes, and despite being an old cabbie he somehow manages to keep up with the magic bus. "Aw it's nothin kids, it's all in the peripherals that's all".
Frankly I imagine these crossovers could be a very positive experience for both parties, and particularly for The Shadow who gets to help people out on adventures and mentor them without the risk of loss of life and darkness permeating them. I imagine he'd have some suggestions of classes that Frizz might have to turn down, and others that, sure, are a little darker than what she usually does, but she's not one to turn down an important learning experience just because it might be a little messier or riskier than normal.
"You wish to teach the children about bats by pretending to be a vampire?....Ha Ha HaHaHa... I have a spare cape and a castle I can borrow you."
Becoming A Stark || Chapter One Being A Stark|| Masterlist
Life finally feels normal again. At least as much as it can for missing five years in the middle of your life, having a new sister, and living in a new house. But your dad is home which is the biggest thing. Dr. Cho is talking about having to send him to a specialist to deal with the after effects on his arm, but for now she’s let him come home with the sling holding the dead weight of his arm. The marks freak Morgan out so Tony has been wearing a lot of flannels over his arm so she doesn’t have to see it. You’re not supposed to know, but you overheard your parents talking about how Dr. Cho thinks most of your dad’s arm will probably need to be cut off. She hadn’t done it in hopes of saving it, but her messages about your dad’s case with the specialist said there is little hope that the arm can be saved. Especially since it’s causing your dad pain, which you didn’t know. You try to imagine your dad without his arm, but it just doesn’t seem right.
A knock on your door pulls you from your thoughts. “Shouldn’t you be asleep kiddo? You’ve got the second first day of ninth grade tomorrow?”
“In which I will be the only one starting the year since everyone else started last week.” You say with a roll of your eyes as Tony walks over to sit on the edge of your bed.
“Even so, you’re not one to stay up late on a school night unless you have homework and seeing as I know you already finished it…” He trails off. “Wanna talk about it?” You slide towards the left side of your bed to make room and Tony moves to sit next to you. His good arm wraps around your shoulder and you lean into the smell of him, cinnamon from his cologne and mint from his aftershave. The only scent missing was the smell of him being in the lab, but until he was cleared to work on things like his cars and other science projects, he was restricted from going into the garage.
“I, uh, heard you and Mom talking the other night.” You say softly. You didn’t mean to eavesdrop, but you were going back to your room after using the bathroom and had heard them from the top of the stairs.
“Heard us? Talking about?” Tony asks, not following what you’re talking about.
“Your arm. How they might cut it off.”
“Ah.”
“How you’re in pain.” You mutter the words.
“I wasn’t keeping that from you, if you’re up late feeling bad about overhearing it.” You look up at him. “Your mom and I were going to talk to you about it after meeting with the specialist. We didn’t want you to be worrying if you didn’t need to be.”
“I’m not up because I felt bad.” Your bottom lip slips between your teeth as you pull at some of the skin there. “I don’t like that you’re in pain.”
“I feel the same way when you hurt kiddo. But that’s what this appointment is about. They think the stones did something to the tissue and nerves. They think it’s basically corrosive. So by taking the arm away, it would hopefully stop the pain.” Your eyebrows fall together as you think about this.
“But how would that affect everything else?”
“Well, I will have to use a prosthetic. And I’ll have to relearn how to do some stuff. But if it gets rid of the pain it will be worth it. Maybe Bucky will teach me all about having a detachable arm.”
“That guy who was bad but now isn’t, that’s a friend of Steve’s?” You ask, having heard the name but never having met the guy.
“That’s the one. He was brainwashed for a little bit into being a bad guy. But he’s all better now. I wouldn’t risk myself being around him if he wasn’t. And he did help us fight Thanos.” He smiles at you. “I think that makes him a good guy.”
“Fuck Thanos.” You mutter.
“Summed up my feelings entirely.” Tony says as his hand rubs your shoulder slightly.
“How do you just jump back into life after being gone for five years?” You ask the other question that has been simmering in your mind for the past few days. “Like my life just stopped? How do I get that back?”
“You seem to be doing a good job at getting it back so far. Hanging out with Mom and Morgan and your favorite old man.” He teases.
“Dad, I’m serious.” You lean into him as you let the words leave your lips. “The past couple weeks have… they felt like they are a part of my new life. But by going back to school, I’m having to be old me all over again? How do I just slip back into that?”
“New life?”
“My old life didn’t include a little sister or waiting for my dad to come home from being injured. It was a whole different thing. I’m in a new house, I haven’t had to do anything that seems like things I would have done before I just poofed.” You didn’t want to admit it, but you had been avoiding Peter partially for that reason. Peter was pre Blip. Morgan was post Blip. How do you make them go together?
“What things are you nervous about having to deal with?”
“I…. I’m scared it will all go away again.” You admit. Every day when you wake up, you feel like crying that you’re still there.
“Being scared is a normal reaction. We all get scared sometimes.”
“You’re Iron Man. You’re saying you get scared? You literally save the world.”
“I lost you. I lost half the universe. I wake up at night and think that you’re still gone. I’m scared I’ll wake up and this will all be a dream. There’s stuff from before the Blip that still causes me to have panic attacks. I get scared easily kiddo. I’m far from perfect at dealing with things.”
“And how do you deal with all of it?”
“I lean on Pepper. I hug you and Morgan as close as humanly possible. I tried therapy once, but should find a different doctor. I tinker. I focus on the things I can control.”
“So I should just keep going even if I’m scared?” Tony nods slowly.
“Is this fear why I haven’t seen a certain Spider-boy around?” You bite the inside of your cheek and don’t answer. “I may not like the idea of you dating people for selfish reasons, but I know he makes you happy. So maybe lean on him instead of pushing him away? Just a suggestion.”
“I…” You trail off, not knowing if you should voice the other thought going through your mind.
“You…?”
“Have you ever thought about how the world would look without you in it?”
“Sure, in a dark moment. Why do you ask?” Tony’s concerned but wants to see where you’re going with this.
“I left, and you guys just moved on. So what’s the point of slipping back into what I did pre Blip if everyone was fine without me?” You ask, not looking at your dad. You find you can’t meet his eyes after saying it.
“We continued living. But we didn’t move on.” Tony wishes he had two working arms so he could pull you into a tight hug and not let go.
“You had a whole other kid while I was gone. How is that not moving on?”
“Morgan was on her way before you Blipped.” You look up at your dad with all the confusion you’re feeling painted across your features. “If the Blip had happened seven weeks later, you would have Blipped knowing that you had a sibling on the way. The last thing we wanted to do after losing you, was try to replace you. And Morgan could never replace you.” He pulls you in closer with his good arm. “I came back from being lost in space with Nebula, thinking I was going to have to tell you I lost your boyfriend. Then I took my first step off the ship and my eyes were searching for you and Pep- hoping I didn’t lose my family. But the moment I saw Pepper’s eyes, I knew it. She didn’t even have to say it. And when I knew you were gone, my whole world fell apart. It felt like my heart had been ripped out. I was sure my lungs were being crushed. I couldn’t breathe. I had a panic attack in front of the remaining Avengers because we lost, but more importantly I lost you, my kid. It took a week before I could even talk to anyone besides Pep. Nearly a month before I could manage to talk about anything Avenger related. It hurt too much. I broke the one promise I swore I wouldn’t. I swore I would keep you safe and I hadn’t done that. I was across the galaxy as you faded into dust. So I promise you Y/N, we never moved on. We just did what we could to make losing you not hurt so much. We were far from fine without you.”
“I didn’t know.” You whisper, not knowing how much pain your dad had gone through. “I’m sor-”
“Don’t you dare finish that sentence. You have nothing to be sorry for. If anyone should apologize, it should be me for not stopping the Blip from happening.”
“That’s not your fault though. You may be an Avenger, but the world doesn’t rest on your shoulders.” You pause before saying. “If I’m not allowed to apologize, then neither are you.”
“You’re making demands now?”
“Mmmhmm. You perfected time travel to bring me back. And you brought my boyfriend back, willingly nonetheless. So I say there’s nothing to apologize for. No apologizing.”
“Ok, no apologizing.” Tony leans against your head. Tony decides to bring up a more positive subject. “Morgan loves that you tell her actual bedtime stories.”
“Actual bedtime stories? What have you been telling her?”
“Once upon a time there was a Morguna who went to bed, the end.”
“That’s the worst story I’ve ever heard. No wonder she likes my stories better.” You shrug. “They’re not that special. Just stories I would have made up when I was her age.”
“Vivid imagination?” You nod.
“Still have one. It’s why I love reading. Imagining far off places and new things to see. It’s amazing.” You lean into your dad’s shoulder as you explain.
“Ever thought about writing your own?”
“Story?”
“Book.”
“I’ve… contemplated it before. But never actually given it a try. What if I have nothing to say?”
“You’ll never know if you don’t try.”
“Wow, it’s cuddle time and I wasn’t invited?” Pepper stands barefoot in your doorway.
“There’s still room.” You pat the bed on the other side of you. Pepper smiles and comes to sit down next to you.
“What are we contemplating instead of sleeping?”
“Dad’s trying to convince me I should try to write a book.”
“You could write a book that is solely Morgan’s bedtime stories and I know you would have at least one reader.” Pepper agrees.
“That’s just made up… shit.” You shrug off your parents’ suggestions. “It’s not a real story.”
“It’s a real story to Morgan. The person who decides the story is worth it is the person who wants to read it. But if you want to do something completely different, that’s ok too. You have plenty of time to figure out what to do in life.” Pepper says. “But, it is getting late and you do have to get up early to drive into the city.”
“You were the ones that chose to move out of NYC proper. So really it’s your fault.” You joke.
“True, but either way, you need to get some sleep so you don’t fall asleep in class.” Tony kisses your cheek. Pepper stands up, but then leans over to give you one more hug and a kiss. “Get some sleep kiddo. Tomorrow is going to be fine.”
“Whatever you say Dad.” Tony pulls your quilt around you and tucks it in tight. “Love you.”
“Love you too sweetheart.”
“Love you kiddo.”
Movie Review: Promising Young Woman
Your reaction to the opening scene of Promising Young Woman might say a lot about you. A trio of finance ‘bros at a strip club talk about a female colleague in unflattering terms. One of them notices a woman who is drunk, by herself and who might be suggestive if she were sober. Two of the men don’t much care whether she’s sober or not, but the third seems concerned, and tries to help.
Have you seen the film? If not, I’d suggest you stop reading. You want to go in blind, not because the story has any fantastically inventive or original twists, but because of the fresh way it presents otherwise tired revenge-fantasy tropes.
If you have seen it, I’d like to quiz you on your reaction to the opening scene. Did you think:
A: “It’s good one of these guys is decent and wants to help.”
Or
B: “Something about this whole thing seems off to me.”
The very-much-not-drunk woman’s name is Cassie, played by the perennially underrated Carey Mulligan, and she makes a habit of this. The “nice guy” of course attempts to take advantage of her, and she leaves his apartment the next morning with blood on her, not hers. She does this not for herself, but for a friend who was sexually assaulted in college.
If you knew anything about the film going in, you expected that. What’s refreshing is where the story goes from there. Cassie returns home to her parent’s house. Her “lair” is her room, an ordinary, if upper-class, quarters. She works at a coffee house, drives an ordinary car, and eventually acquires an ordinary boyfriend (Bo Burnham) who is cute enough but not Hollywood Hot.
Most revenge-fantasy films strictly avoid questions of where a character lives, how they earn money, who their family and friends are, and what they do when they aren’t revenging. That’s even more true of movies starring women. We seem unable to imagine them as both hardened action stars and having a regular life. In movies like Atomic Blonde or Ocean’s 8, the heroes operate out of temporary digs, and if we do catch a glimpse of an apartment, it’s not the kind of place humans actually live---there are never any messes, and nobody spends even a single night on a Netflix binge. One recent film simply titled Revenge gave our heroine absolutely no background or story at all.
This often works, on a sleek, superficial level. What elevates PYW is that it eschews that sleekness for messy reality, so that when Cassie takes revenge on one of the many people she blames for what happened, she still has to walk out onto an ordinary street, drive to a real house in a real car, and so forth. Most avenging angels are simply transported from one setpiece location to another by editing. You cannot picture one of Liam Neeson’s retribution-obsessed action heroes actually driving somewhere---he simply teleports.
The movie later suggests she does not kill her targets, but instead terrorizes them and sometimes tortures them. You may well wonder how she gets away with this---how she fools assholes into taking her home despite leaving them alive to spread the story. The movie never says, but if you’ve been around this particular type of guy, you already know. Men such as Cassie’s victims never see a woman as being their equal, and thus cannot perceive one as a threat to them. And if a woman does get the best of them, they’d never tell the authorities. Both things would threaten their sense of dominance. When they tell their friends the story, you better believe they re-write it to make themselves look good.
All of which naturally begs the question: what is Cassie achieving? A lesser film in this vein might be content to say that revenge is enough. Emerald Fennell clearly found that approach lacking. Cassie is not a mindless, emotion-free robot of automatic vengeance, but a broken person driven to break people who deserve it. One of my favorite comics, 100 Bullets, is built around the ability to get away with justified murder, and ranges widely in terms of the fates of those who take that chance.
Cassie would fit right in as a character there. The men she targets deserve their fate. Yet her crusade is destroying whatever was left of her as her ends justify more and more extreme means. She eventually confronts the Dean of her former med school (Connie Britton), a woman who has a history of allowing abusers to walk free because she places her social class above both her gender and justice. The Dean deserves to squirm, but however correct Cassie is in what she says, what she does to torture the women would make any parent hate our protagonist.
There is no way this is not deliberate on Fennell’s part; you cannot write a hero such as this one and expect us to agree with everything she does. She is not out to ruin the lives of merely abusers, but of those who looked the other way. The moral dilemma is that Cassie does not care who else she hurts to make those people hurt. Anyone is fair game for her schemes if it accomplishes her ends. There’s no way for a person with a soul to be that focused on getting the job done without internalizing some of it, taking that darkness on themselves.
The pivotal moment showing the damage Cassie is personally incurring is not very dramatic. She visits a woman who was a friend when they were kids, and talks about the friend who is gone. This is simply an ordinary woman---we have not seen her before this scene, and we do not see her after, because Cassie has isolated herself from her life. She lives on an ordinary street, and the two talk like you or I might talk, not like a screenwriter would. You could quite easily walk down this street and past them talking, and not know anything important was being discussed.
Could this be a comment by Fennell: “Sexual assault doesn’t appear dramatic, and is all around you”? It works on that level. I chose to see it as a means to ground Cassie in a life like ours, to elevate her above the killing machines we see in many movies. Real survivors don’t become superheroes; they have to go on with life. Cassie is a great hero because she has to do that, too. Our satisfaction at seeing assholes punished is muted somewhat by how much of her soul it costs her. Verdict: Must-See
Note: I don’t use stars, but here are my possible verdicts.
