absolutely fucking reeling from puss in boots the last wish. my grown ass friends made me see it and it absolutely fucked. it was mad max fury road for kids. it was a horror movie about the fear of death. it was a western about an ageing outlaw trying to regain his youth with the help of his ex fiance and homeless harvey guillen. it was about found family. it was about needing people and asking for help. it had the best depiction of a panic attack i've ever seen in a mainstream film. the villain looked exactly like boris johnson. there was a wicker man reference. it had a kill count higher than most slasher films. it set up shrek 5. they even said fuck.

i care immensely about harvey being a 6'5" bear. do he and candy travel often or do they stick to one town and just live in separate places

harvey actually lives out of town! he owns a ranch a ways out. candy lives in town; she owns a diner and a beat up house her shitty queerphobe dad left to her in his will as a last ditch effort of getting his kid to care about him while he was dying. didnt work but she still got the house. lol.

harvey frequently comes into town to visit her, but she also likes staying at his ranch :^) she sometimes comes with him when he travels for livestock shows n shit (he's won like 20 sheep shearing competitions 🙄🙄🙄) but that's the extent of the traveling they really do. they're middle aged and tired they don't want to go places. the only reason they live apart is because of business purposes lol. harvey can't leave the ranch and candy does NOT want to make an hour commute to work every day driving on unpaved mountain roads

Movies: Puss In Boots: The Last Wish

Our arrival on the last 72 hours of my annual countdown once again brings us to the honorable mention section.

Here we focus on a creative rebirth for Dreamworks Animation that unexpectedly began via the last character we assumed would get it going.

Puss in Boots, the feline outlaw who gained prominence with the Shrek sequels had many fans and admirers.

Although his origin story was enjoyable it ended up being forgotten via the subpar Shrek finale the year before.

So it’s oddly fitting 10 years and change later a return to that world with a different animation style and mindset would oddly give us the satisfaction of Puss in Boots in his true glory.

Having adventured through many lands, the antics of Puss begins to catch up with him as he loses the 8th of his 9 lives.

When faced with the wolf of the one thing he never saw coming, the life he had seemed too much as he quickly goes into seclusion living amongst cats and a therapy dog named Perrito.

Only his past comes for him in the form of his ex Kitty Southpaws, a bounty hunting Goldilocks and her ursine family, and a pie magnet named Jack who seek control of a fallen star to grant a wish for anyone who reaches it.

Unexpectedly this works very well, not only showing off new animations that make the little golden books seem tame in comparison, but gives heart with Puss who needs to seek out if he can balance his old lifestyle with new realities.

All this does is make everyone want to see the return of a certain layered green thing and right hand stallion. Cause this was a lot better than anyone saw coming.

SUM 22: Puss in Boots gets the resurgence of Dreamworks going great with an adventure that blends old and new in a very contemporary setting.

Mini-review:

My expectations for this were crazy high and, thankfully, it didn't disappoint at all. The story is incredibly emotional, the characters are richly written and the animation is... WOW. Every single shot of the movie is mind-blowingly stunning. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen for even a second. You can just see all the work, love and passion that went into making this film. And also, the story feels so refreshing and original. Like, from an objective point of view, I can tell it isn't that groundbreaking, but the way it's told did feel... new to me.

Another thing I want to highlight is the Wolf, cause I can't remember the last time I saw a villan that was so genuinely terrifying. The character's animation and voice work are pitch-perfect. I know the same can be said about the rest of characters, but this one was particularly striking to me. And going back to the story, I really loved its message and the way they brought all the plot threads/characters together at the end. To sum up, this movie stole my heart thanks to its story, its characters and the sheer beauty of its animation. Let's hope we get to see more stuff like that, but in the Far Far Away setting 👀

Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #12: Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (dir. Joel Crawford)

Talk about the little film that could. I don't think a single person on the face of this planet was ready for the absolute masterpiece of animation that is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. Everyone that I know that's seen it, myself included, went into this with every ounce of doubt, regardless of the heaps of praise the film was receiving. I was originally not even going to watch this at all. It was going to be one of the few films I actually skipped out on in the theater because I have only ever really seen the first Shrek film (and pieces of the second one), but I am so glad I changed my mind. Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Harvey Guillén, Florence Pugh, Olivia Colman, Ray Winstone, Samson Kayo, Wagner Moura, John Mulaney, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Kevin McCann should all be insanely proud of what they were able to accomplish through voice acting, and the team of animators at DreamWorks who worked on this should all be given a massive raise for creating what was, without a single bit of contest, the most unabashedly fun animated experience of 2022, with an opening sequence that immediately sucks you in that is followed by what is possibly the greatest child-friendly story about death, death anxiety, and what makes living life so special that I have ever seen. It's always so refreshing when a film that will most likely be viewed by tons of children the world over talks to them plainly about the realities of death and darker subject matter in general without resorting to sugarcoating, that respects its younger audience to have the capacity to handle more mature themes and not talk down to them in the process. This is where the list shifts from films I loved from last year, to films I worship, and the fact that this beautiful piece of art is only at #12 should be a testament to how truly special the 2022 film season was.
