Top 10

Kingdom Hearts - Obviously of course. I don’t always even rank KH1 as my favorite KH game but basically this was my “oh games can be like that?” game. Until I played this, I mostly played simulator games and movie tie-ins and Barbie games, and I loved those but this one had a STORY I could bury myself in. I forced the friend I played this game with to sit and wait while I read through every journal entry and character file looking for MORE, because I was so immediately hooked on everything.

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories - This one always ranks high not just because of the story, which I love, but because this was the first game I ever beat entirely by myself. A lot of people skip or can’t stand this game so I’m extra proud of myself tbh. But this is the game where one of my favorite characters became one of my favorite characters, so it’ll always have a special place.

Ōkami - I love this game so much… It’s so visually stunning, I love the unique game play, and Amaterasu is such an amazing protagonist despite the fact that she does talk outside of barking and howling and also she is literally a dog. But she’s so good. There’s a dedicated bark button, which is important. AND THERE’S FISHING!

Final Fantasy X - I’ve literally never sobbed more over a piece of media in my entire life. The game wasn’t even over yet. I had to fight a boss with tears in my eyes. This was my first FF game and oh my god. Oh my god. I can say no more.

Horizon Zero Dawn - I got so sucked into this game. It was all I could think about for months. I love the environmental storytelling and the world-building and Aloy is a female protagonist WITHOUT a love interest in this game and it’s so huge to me and ugh. UGH.,

Hades - This game is so fun… I usually don’t like games that make me feel like I’m struggling but they somehow made it such a joy to die over and over again and see what’s up in the house. The sheer amount of unique dialogue makes it impossible to get annoyed. And it’s just FUN. Full of complicated family dynamics and Greek mythology… Collectibles… WOO (also has fishing)

Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life - This is a really sentimental add, but it’s genuinely one of my favorites. I have so many memories of me and my childhood best friend staying up until the wee hours of the morning playing this game, only to go to bed and set an alarm to get up and play it again. AWL has some of the best NPCs of all HM/SOS games, and also the cutest cows. Ever.

Final Fantasy XV - FISHING. And also stories about bonds we build… friendship… ough.. I love sitting in the back of the car and letting Ignis drive and feeling like we’re all on a friendship road trip together. Random stops for pictures and bathroom breaks included. Luna deserved better but the hours I spent fishing made up for that.

Persona 5 Strikers - It probably seems silly to put this here and not Persona 5, but I really loved Strikers so much. It had such satisfying gameplay, completely different from the source material, yet still somehow felt like such an homage to the classic movesets. It was a really good adaptation to a new genre. I loved the story and the new characters, who MADE ME CRY! and I think it’s such a shame, because a lot of Persona players skipped this one!!! Ryuji gets to say fuck. Come on, people.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - I love the characters in this game so much… I miss them… I love the original AA trilogy, but this one was so much fun for me. I love Herlock Sholmes… I love him so much I forgot that his real name is not Herlock Sholmes. All the characters are so dynamic and the cases are so fun… That was a game I wished never had to end.

Special mention to Animal Crossing: Wild World, Barbie Horse Adventures Mystery Ride, Secret Agent Barbie, Ni No Kuni, God of War (2018), Gris... I love video games. Damn.

About Blitz being regarded as one of the most skilled assassins in the pitch, two things. If the imps are so good at what they do (clearly are known about enough to have sinners who recently died contact them and had multiple clients in spring broken) how come they've never heard of striker? Blitz never heard of another assassin with his own theme song before? You can't even say he wouldn't care cuz he was thrilled to see another imp in a position like him, offering him a job and everything. Striker was hired by demon royalty ffs.

Speaking of which. I'm forever pissed that we didn't have stella hire BLITZ as the assassin to kill uwu owl daddy. It's likely she doesn't remember anything about Blitz after the affair happened (she gives off all imps look the same to me vibes) and IMP used to do missions in hell. If they pay is good enough, they'd definitely take hits from the upper class or those who are powerful. Ofc with the way the story currently is, he wouldn't even think of taking the job. (Pilot Blitz might've considered it) but ik there's gotta be an AU or even a alternative dimension (where viv isnt obsessed with a boring owl) where stella hires IMP to kill "her cheating husband" only for them to find out its the long legged owl. Except he's not a can-do-nothing-wrong twink and an ACTUAL villain like the way he was portrayed before episode 2. Idk I just hate the way they write stolas and the way IMP are simultaneously portrayed as excellent and shitty at their jobs

Pilot Blitz would have absolutely considered it, and even Blitz as far along as Harvest Moon was a little bit torn. Can you imagine how funny and interesting an episode would have been where Blitz has to struggle with the dilemma of whether or not to accept the job of offing Stolas, the rich asshole he fucking hates but also depends on to access the book? Having to deal with Stella who's no picnic herself? And all the while Stolas is blithely fopping around the background, horny and oblivious as always?

That would have been amazing.

Ooh!! Such a good question!! I'm going to include series as 1 game, but I'll also indicate if a specific game is my favorite. This is in no particular order either

1. The Harvest Moon games/Rune Factory games (magical melody and rf3 hold very special places in my heart)

2. TWC, obviously. The brainrot is so incredibly real rn.

3. FFXV. I haven't played any other ff game but according to the gorgeous customer I had yesterday who blew a kiss at me, I'd apparently like 9 and 10. But yeah, FFXV altered my entire brain chemistry. Ignis Scientia my beloved

4. I'm starting to realize I don't play as many games as I thought I did djdjdjdjd but uhhh. I've been playing the demo for the IF infamous and I've really been enjoying that one!!

5. Fuck uh..... Luigi's mansion. Specifically the first one for the GameCube. Many memories of playing that with my sister while we blasted Christina Aguilera's music (specifically her song Pero Mi Acuerdo De Ti)

When I see really bad takes in FFVII fandom like "kill tifa instead, she's just right there", " it's "all" of them, "misogyny" there that when killing a woman, uh many other things. I just want to tell any of you, just go play any other game that focuses on multiple routes, and player immersion? Like I dunno, 999, dark souls, tactics ogre, tokimeki girl's memorial, corpse party, Persona 3, 4, 5, fate/franchise by type moon, harvest moon, Etc the list goes on. Just go play visual novels, literally any game you can self insert yourself in because that's the point? But FFVII, rather FF was never that kind of franchise, if there's any, at most it serves a purpose but really could honestly just be unnecessary fan service. FF is about its narrative and the rpg part is about being in that world ,and not being the character yourself. I've been playing a lot of these types of games for years and a huge fan of jp games. So when they imply FFVII is such, I cringe a lot because this game would be the worst in that genre. It wouldn't even qualify 😂. I mean what's the point of still watching or playing a game known for it's story if you don't get the narrative and it's characters.. 😂.

Exactly! Final Fantasy is not and never has been a choose your own adventure game. Idky so many people think they decide what happens in them. The player doesn't decide anything.

If I got to decide what happens in FF then Clive sure af wouldn't be lying on a beach alone. He'd go home and we'd see him happy with Jill. But because there's always and only one story path, Clive is left alone on a beach.

And before some smartarse tries "there's no options in xvi" uhhh yeah there is. You can take Jill or Tarja. There's also a chance for you to hang out with Otto or Gavin, so there are choices in the game, but the plot is the same no matter how much or little you do or who you hang with.

Ffvii always and only ends with Tifa. Cloud is always in love with her. He will always be with her, no matter how fucking salty y'all are about that.

Just go play a nameless protagonist game. It's not like there's no good ones out there.

This has probably been asked before BUT it's my favorite question to ask gamer types: list your Top 5 games/series in no particular order!

Pbbbbbt man okay hold on.

So Kingdom Hearts used to be up there but I was actually kind of... underwhelmed by KH3. Like I liked it and all and it makes me interested in KH4 but idk if I've just grown out of the demographic or if it was really an underwhelming game (its sales tell me that enough people liked it that it probably is just a me problem) but it was enough to make me rethink KH.

Final Fantasy however remains strong. My favorite [mainline] FF game is actually FF4, and my first played is FF10, but I've enjoyed pretty much all of the [mainline] FF games released in the US and more than a few of the side games like Tactics and Crystal Chronicles.

The Tales series also remains one of my favorite series even though, similar to KH, I've been sort of underwhelmed by a few of the recent entries. Arise was probably on level with KH3 for me, Zesteria was... fun, but not really a "Tales game". Xillia and Vesperia were great rides in comparison. I own Berseria but haven't played it yet so I'm still not sure on my feelings on that one. Symphonia will always be my #1 so it's hard to match that quality.

Assassin's Creed, of course, and though I'd argue that again the most recent entries haven't really been "Assassin's Creed" games, they have been incredibly fun and a good return to the series after my Ubisoft divorce.

Pokemon, obviously, I've played every single mainline entry (though tbf I haven't progressed past the first town in Black/White because, uh, reasons) and nearly every side game lmao I was obsessed as a child and I'm only less obsessed now because I have no money to spend on frivolous things like every single Pokemon entry known to man.

Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons- I've loved these games since A Wonderful Life and Magical Melody, but again, recent entries have been more than a little underwhelming and I'm not interested in the nostalgia-bait of the remakes. I've already played these games to death and I'm not really interested in doing it again.

Ys- honestly this is a weird one for me because I've played almost every single Ys game that's hit the US but at the same time I'm not like. Obsessed with it? I like the games a lot and I find them very fun but I also don't really care about the story or the characters. Like I got into them because of the pretty art during the PSP era and it's not that I dislike really anything about it but I think I'm mostly just in it because I like following my pretty red-haired swordsman around on adventures. Must appeal to the Kenshin fan in me. If you asked me what the story was about in most of these games I'd stare at you blankly because I very don't remember so it's definitely not the story drawing me in, and a lot of time the combat is pretty simplistic so it can't be the gameplay either. I think it's honestly just because it's a fun game with a passable enough story to let me enjoy it while I play, but not strong enough really to stand on its own among all the other fantasy jrpgs I play.

And, lastly, Fire Emblem. I started with the GBA Fire Emblem (Blazing Blade, tho it was just "Fire Emblem" on the box) and loooooooooved Sacred Stones and just stayed from there. Again, despite having played pretty much every Fire Emblem game that's been released here, I can't really tell you that the story was particularly strong except for the two GBA games which had such a great story that I played them over and over and over because I loved them (and also I loved Erika and Lyndis). Good enough for me to enjoy them, not really good enough for me to say the story was the strongest part. I will say the gameplay was probably the main draw, these were my first tactics games and what I always judge every other tactics game off of at this point. The idea that it was all a game of chess, except the chess pieces talked and would die if you weren't careful (back in the days of permadeath at that!!!) and you could get them to marry each other etc was very appealing to me.

That was more than five, but there you go.

Random ask that may or may not be foreshadowing; if you were to completely drop persona cold turkey, what other rpg series do you think you'd hyperfixate over instead?

Hmmmmmm hard to say.

If it's something I've yet to play then I dunno.

But if it's going back and playing older games I've played the hell out of.....hmmm let's start there I guess:

I like Pokemon, but I'm not gonna compete to be the biggest know-it-all with that franchise (esp with the amount of conflicting info and canons and possibly mistranslations). It's astronomical compared to MegaTen.... (what applies to Pokemon can also be applied to Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh too....)

Dragon Ball.......Tbh I'm not that into fighting games, maybe if I ever get a Legacy of Goku 4 fkjdlajf; Gimme some good RPG DB games and I'm down (I have Kakarot and the Legacy of Goku games tho)

There's really no plot/character/story analysis I can do on the Tony Hawk games.....

I like DMC and Nioh, but I feel like those games and fandoms are more focused on the gameplay mechanics....plus they aren't exactly easy games to just "kick back and enjoy" I have to really concentrate which is draining...... (more so Nioh than DMC, but I'm more invested in Nioh than DMC so that's an issue TT0TT)

I love Assassins' Creed, but even I know the amount of content I'd have to hard core consume (between AC and AT LEAST Watch Dogs......oof). Just thinking about it might explode my brain. u_u

Love Rule of Rose, but other fans have dug deeper done everything with it. So there's nothing for me to really bring to the table.

.hack.....maybe I could get back into that? My knowledge is mostly in the novles/manga I've read tho. ("But Silly! Isn't that technically a fantasy game?" I mean.....yes but it's modern day chars playing a video game. I dunno I always found that idea novel alongside 'oh people are dying' mystery. It's why I watched SAO because it reminded me of .hack! ....I'm not getting into SAO tho >_>)

Most heavy fantasy.....probs not likely but not impossible. The thing with Persona/Megaten is that they usually have a very "grounded in real life" kinda vibe going on. Which was nice because it felt like less stuff I had to memorize to understand the world. Plus it was more of a vibe I liked..... (but I'll mention some of the well known franchises....mostly cause they are the ones with the most entries to get into)

Love KH but I don't really wanna deep dive into it (I think the writing was best in KH1 and CoM, I think Sora's char has really devolved over the games, and I hated 3D and KH3). I am keeping an eye on KH4 and maybe even Verum Rex (which I'm pulling for us to get, outta all the FF games, FFvs13 was always one I was super interested in).

FF.....I'll play them, but I'm not that invested into them. (12's ok, 7's ok, 7R's ok but I need to finish those three first.... I liked 15 even tho it was messy, I hate 13 with a passion, I should try 10 cause it reminds me of Destiny Islands. 15 and 10 are the best contenders for me to be invested in tbh).

Tales of...... tbh Xillia always interested me the most. I should go through my backlog......I'm like halfway through Arise so I should probs pick that back up.

Maybe I should try Ys? Or finish the Trails of/Legends games I have too, tho I'm not very invested in that that.

Atelier series.....I should finish the games I have of that....then again....it's related to Mana Khemia right? I actually played and liked the first game of that (I sucked at it so I don't think I finished, that and I think I got P4 within that year so that ended up consuming me not long after)......I should give Mana Khemia another chance.

Oh there's also the Lunar series......I was always interested in that after I was graced with the game Lunar Dragon Song as a kid. :'D Weep for me yes, weep. I know. u_u IYKYK

I like Harvest Moon/Story of seasons.....but not enough to like...deep dive into stuff.

I mostly play Slime Rancher for the gameplay loop than the analysis too tbh.....

Far Cry 5 is a heavy contender. I did get lucky, outta all of the FC games....at least this one not only got a direct sequel with New Dawn (even tho it deals more with the Highway men than the cultists *sobs*), it also got a tie-in DLC with FC6......plus I got that novel, and the little bit of supplementary material. The issue, which is a double edge sword....is that it ends there. There's a lot of side content I could probs find and dissect, but once I find it all it ends.

At least with Persona, I can expect the world to keep going and expanding (either it's main continuity or the larger continuities in general). FC I'm not sure.....they might have diff timelines but no in an interactive way like MegaTen does.....

I guess I can try a swing at Mind=0, Tokyo Xanadu, Caligula 1/2, or Monark. Both with finishing and attempting to hyperfixate....but they just don't hit the same. Plus I run into a similar problem as with FC5....it's pretty much it when it ends (and unlike FC5, I doubt those games have as much content).

I am very Avatar-pilled atm....and I'm going through those games. Which was something I meant to do like 10 years ago during my last hyperfixation on the franchise (but I think I got distracted by PQ1 jklsdfj;). So maybe expect a small deep dive on those? Platinum's Korra will probs reign supreme for me tbh klfdjsa;f

Hmmmm I've heard good things about Suikoden......same with Phantasy star, Chrono trigger, Mother/earthbound.....maybe actually finish FE 3Hs......

Tldr; I dunno. At least game wise. Other media (either exclusively a diff format or one that's multimedia'd)? That's a bit more easier/open ended. (I'm juggling Atla/Korra, Addams' Family, and Naruto like a lil' court jester, we'll see how this goes)

It started about 22 years ago…

I got Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland for PS2

I joined a Harvest Moon forum to ask questions and ended up getting pretty involved in RP and the community

Lots of people on the forum were also FF fans and started a spin-off FF fan site which I joined

I had played 7 and 8 but never beaten them, but now my friends were telling me all about FF so I was intrigued and picked up 10 and loved it

A bunch of forum friends were starting 11 and I was like. yes. Picked up that HDD and convinced my mom to let me start a subscription lmao (thanks mom)

Played FF11 on and off for years, got really into it, made a bunch more friends, played 12 and 13 also, played a bunch of the older FFs too and at this point I’m a certified FF fan

FF14 is announced but my PC is a potato. I buy 1.0 but never start it. I hold on to it just in case, but then my car engine goes bang and poof there goes my extra PC upgrade money

1.0 gets awful reviews and I kinda give up on it and keep playing 11 and WoW on my potato

Years later ARR is announced and I’m like oh man that would be cool but not holding my breath

ARR actually comes out. on PS3!! My PC is still kinda garbo but… I have a PS3!!!!!!! YEAH!
