One Cut of the Dead (2017, dir. Shinichiro Ueda) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
One Cut of the Dead got me. I can't say much more than that without ruining the fun for people who haven't seen it, and I want you to watch it. Even if you don't think you can handle horror or zombie movies, just stick with it and I promise you you're in for a good time, trust me. There's so much I want to say, but I literally can't without spoiling it, so I'll just let my score do the talking.
Score: 9/10
Currently available for streaming on Shudder.

One Cut of the Dead (Take 2)
Tumblr media
I wanted to share something surprising with a friend, and fortunately he knew nothing of Shin’ichiro Ueda’s ONE CUT OF THE DEAD (2017, Shudder), a great mix of zombie film and NOISES OFF. It opens with a woman trying to cope with the fact that the man she loves has become a zombie. As he moves in to chomp down on her neck, an off-screen voice yells “cut,” something we’ll hear a few more times. They’re actors making a movie, and thanks to the actress’ lack of emotional commitment, they’re on their 42nd take. This is a bit of a joke, as it turns out the film we’re watching unfolds in a single 37-minute take, a bit of cinematic virtuosity that may have you applauding, or at least breathing hard in sympathy with the poor cameraman who has to race up and down several flights of stairs to follow the action. Eventually we learn they’re filming in an abandoned facility in which the government had run tests on restoring the dead to life. And their director may have taken steps to invest his film with a little extra realism.
What struck me this time was how deftly Ueda, who also wrote, works with the standard tropes of backstage comedy. You get the self-important actor who questions the director incessantly, the actress who gets so wrapped up in her role she loses control (the very funny Harumi Shuhama), a not-so-secret drunk and numerous accidents and equipment failures. Yet the company pulls together in the end. As should happen in any good production of NOISES OFF (<cough>like mine<cough>) the company becomes a family. This may just be the world’s only utopian zombie film.

31 Days of Horror! Day Fourteen: One Cut Of The Dead
So I watched this one yesterday. It just took me a day to figure out what to write.
One Cut of The Dead is a really interesting film about a film crew making a zombie movie about a film crew making a zombie movie. There was a lot going on, with both the fiction movie plot which I loved, and the stuff that followed.
This movie is a zombie comedy, written and directed by Shin'ichirō Ueda. It stars Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Kazuaki Nagaya, and Harumi Shuhama.
There is a lot I appreciated about this movie. The comedy was a huge one. Characters freezing, characters jumping back to life and yelling, the facial expressions, the timing. The filming! The filming of the film, specifically the first forty-five or so minutes was done super well, especially considering the camera is actively a character itself. The zoom-ins that hide the character deaths or zombie attacks, the concealment of others. And the fantastic achievement of making that segment of the movie in one take is phenomenal.
Decent film. ^^

ONE CUT OF THE DEAD Review - ***½
ONE CUT OF THE DEAD Review – ***½
Tumblr media
The zombie-film equivalent of Noises Off, with a dash of Charlie Kaufmanesque meta-theatrics, One Cut of the Dead is a fairly delightful little film which almost never does quite what you’d expect it to. If you want to go in cold, accept my recommendation and read no further. But if you don’t mind a little further analysis (I don’t think it merits the name of “spoiler”), read on.

Halloween Day Eleven
I am going to make my first horror movie recommendation of Spooky Season an easy one.  Kamera Wo Tomeruna! aka One Cut of the Dead starts out on a shoot for a low-budget zombie movie where things go very, very badly.  The lead actors are not very good, the makeup lady is a little too into self-defense and the director is a tyrant.  And then there are the zombies.
And THEN, you find out that something else is going on entirely....
To even my most nervous friends out there, trust me, once you get to the wild ride finale of this movie, which is seems like a zombiepalooza but is actually a love letter to filmmaking, family, horror movies, and the power of team work, I promise you the biggest smile a you’ve ever gotten from the undead.  It is truly a fucking delight.
The link leads to the IMDB page and a preview.
If you want to be added to my taglist please let me know.

i dunno if this has been mentioned but it looks like we have at least one other confirmed revice actor, noritaka hamao as “george karisaki”
https://twitter.com/noritakahamao
the revice twitter is also following shuhama harumi which makes me suspect she might have a role as well, though there doesn’t seem to be any official statement yet
