haruko strikes me as someone who likes to scrapbook, if that even makes sense ?? like, she likes to cut and paste stuff she thinks is interesting and put them in a notebook dedicated to such things, and even write little annotations on the sides !

and because of that i think she'll like brush pens and pastel-colored highlighters !! she'd love some stickers too, and prints that she can rip up and arrange in her own special way ; shes so cute ilhsm

AND AYAKO !! ayako .. gives it girl energy. And because of that I think that she'll put clothes in her wishlist ! bell bottoms, flare pants, crop tops, tank tops, the list goes on. She'd love some shiny hair pins too ! magpie ayako supremacy !!

ALSO remember the caligraphy she wrote after shohoku lost to kainan ?? because of that i think she'd also like some good quality brushes and inks to write with :DD

the success of slam dunk

Something I often hear from others is that “Slam Dunk is underrated”. To an extent, this is true. The series isn’t very talked about among younger fans of manga, and newer sports series such as Haikyuu are mentioned more by younger fans. However, Slam Dunk is not underrated in the slightest. Its numbers of copies sold worldwide (170 million copies, making it the seventh best selling manga of all time) speaks for itself, but in this essay I want to break down both the numbers and impact that truly show Slam Dunk’s success.

During the time of the series' publishing in Shonen Jump, Japan had been going through an economic fall. The Japanese economy suffered a prolonged recession that followed the collapse of the economic success of the 80’s. Corporations had stopped hiring new employees in order to maintain their current ones. This meant that many people were out of work, and it led to high unemployment. While this doesn’t directly affect Inoue, it puts lots of pressure on his manga to do well. After all, if he couldn’t make something that sold, he was out of a job. He had also stated that his editors were against him making a basketball manga due to it being unknown in the country, yet he did it regardless — despite knowing that he could easily be out of a job and face the financial difficulties many others were facing throughout the 90’s.

Throughout the 90’s, basketball wasn't very known in Japan. The NBA was at its peak in popularity, but this popularity didn’t translate to Japan. Baseball and soccer were far more known sports in Japan, and so Inoue was faced with the task of introducing basketball to his readers. (He did a good job of this). Slam Dunk starts off more comedic and casual compared to an intense sports series, and this was done to appeal to a wider audience. In fact, some of the most popular chapters and episodes at the time had been the gym fight arc, which didn’t exactly have much to do with basketball. But as the series progressed, Inoue was faced with two choices; to continue with the writing structure that was selling, or to double down on the basketball aspect of the series and risk alienating and losing his audience.

But instead of backing down, Inoue decided to take the risk. The story became more and more basketball focused, but he didn’t alienate his audience. In fact, the story was becoming more and more popular. At the time, it contended with Dragon Ball Z, and at times was even outselling.

The apex of the series’ popularity had been towards the end of its serialization in 1995-1996, throughout the Shohoku vs Sannoh match. And then… it ended. Inoue’s editors wanted him to continue the series as it was one of the magazine’s best selling, but instead, he just left. A complete power move. The series had lots of material that could have been used to continue the series, such as what happened to Shohoku (particularly Sakuragi) after the Sannoh match, him getting the girl, him becoming an even better player. I think that Inoue knew the series could have been even bigger if he had continued, but I also believe that it ended where it needed to. If Slam Dunk had been dragged longer, it may have gotten stale, and it might not have been as beloved as it is right now. Additionally, Inoue’s other big titles such as Vagabond or REAL don’t have endings due to long hiatus, and it’s possible that Slam Dunk may have faced similar treatment.

Aside from its overall sales, another interesting metric that encapsulates Slam Dunk’s success is its sales per volume estimate.

Slam Dunk being second only to One Piece (the best selling manga of all time) highlights just how successful it is.

Additionally, here is a sales chart of the best selling manga in September 2022. The fact Slam Dunk places here despite being a series that has been completed for over 25 years speaks for itself.

The series is very impressive sales wise already, but another component on just how successful Slam Dunk is its cultural impact in Japan. I already stated Inoue was forced with the task of introducing basketball to Japan. And to say he introduced it to them would be an understatement; it can be said that Slam Dunk popularized the sport.

Around the 90’s, while basketball was at its peak in popularity due to the NBA, Japan didn’t pick up on this. Baseball and football were still far more popular. As I said before, Inoue was tasked to introduce basketball to his readers.

Introduced is an understatement, and Inoue’s story actually increased enrollment in basketball among Japanese youth. In fact, throughout 1990-1995, around one million Japanese high schoolers were playing basketball as an extracurricular. And when Slam Dunk ended its serialization, this number dropped again.

Additionally, when the NBA came to Japan during the time the series was being published, the stadiums for their games were packed. This adds onto just how much more popular basketball was getting in Japan. And even now, it can be said basketball is a much popular sport in Japan.

But he didn’t just introduce the game itself; he also showed the culture surrounded by basketball.

Basketball culture is another prominent thing shown in Slam Dunk, from the boys hooping in Jordans, the baggy clothes they wear, to the sneakerhead culture. Inoue bridged 90’s American culture to Japan, and he made it a thing among Japanese youth.

Something else I want to note is that Nike allowed for Inoue’s use of their products in the manga. On my initial read, this surprised me, since I figured that Nike would have copyrighted the series. However, the reason they allowed for Inoue’s display of their products was because it essentially advertised their products to the Japanese market. In fact, Jordan’s and Nike’s sneakers had a massive increase in Japanese sales throughout the series’ publication (particularly the shoes worn by Sakuragi and Rukawa). Additionally, Nike also had a collaboration with Inoue to make red Jordan’s with Slam Dunk’s panels.

The series wasn’t known in just Japan, but throughout other Asian countries such as South Korea, China, and The Philippines. And as a result, basketball got popularized in these countries as well. If you were to ask anyone from there from around the 80’s-90’s, it’d be difficult to not find a Slam Dunk reader.

Throughout all this, I firmly believe that Slam Dunk isn’t underrated. It is arguably one of the most influential mangas, and easily one of the most successful.

Since Yohei and Hanamichi are childhood friends, I always wonder abt how they first met!! Maybe their parents were acquainted but I like to think that Yohei meets Sakuragi in kindergarten/playschool and see's Sakuragi eating rocks for fun all by himself on the playground bc everyone else is scared of him. Yohei approaches him, abit weirded out but he can't seem to leave Sakuragi alone

Miyagi househusband/malewife hc because ayako supremacy runs this house ✊✊ so timeskip hc!! Miyagi goes pro and ayako becomes an office women 😳 she cheers her coworkers on and is respected AND feared by everyone (even the managers) Since they both are working, they hire a housekeeper I guess but when miyagi is home, he goes into house husband mode and waits near the door with a pink apron and his two kids to welcome his beloved wife 😔 #inoue_approved_this

He would definitely try being subtle about his feelings and he wouldn’t be obnoxious or anything.

Akagi wouldn’t tell ANY of his homies if he had interest in a girl. Especially not to any of his teammates. He just knows Sakuragi would make fun of him. I think Kogure would pick up on it though.

He would try not to show it, but he would blush alot around you. Akagi would avoid making eye contact too. He would try to act casual though, and just talk to you normally, but he’d find himself stuttering a lot

He’d be a little unfocused during practices and in class. I think you’d come to his mind alot, like on his walk home or if he’s awake in the middle of the night.

Mitsui

I feel like if he ends up falling in love, he’s gonna be really anxious or emotionally sensitive??

Mitsui is 100% the type to listen to music that reminds him of his crush. I just know that boy would jam to Taylor Swift. like omg imagine him singing along to enchanted and screaming “please dont be in love with someone else, i was enchanted to meet you”

Like Akagi, he wouldn’t want to talk about his feelings to anyone. But I think it’d be easier to slip an answer out of him if you ask him enough. He still wouldn’t say who the girl is, but it’d be obvious enough to tell.

I feel like he would always sneak looks at you? Like he wouldn’t want to be obvious about his crush but the minute you turn over and look at him he would look in the other direction. He wouldn’t let his crush affect his basketball practice too much, but I think he’d get a bit unfocused

I just know Miyagi would be OBNOXIOUS. Just based off his little crush for Ayako it’s obvious 😭

Ryota would start showing up to class more “dripped out”, bro would be wearing hella jewelry and have some cologne on to impress you. I think he would want to attract your attention, and his way to do that is with having a flashy appearance.

He does want to be the one to approach you first, but I think first Ryota would “prepare” himself. He’d observe you a little, and try to learn about you more. Like Mitsui, he’d sneak looks at you. But if you looked back I don’t think he’d look away.

─🏀─ Slam Dunk : sakuragi hanamichi celebrating haruko's birthday

⸝⸝ summary : title says all, a little fanfic about sakuragi giving haruko a homemade (and delicious) birthday present !

⸝⸝ note : t'was my own birthday a week ago ! turned one year older and now my bones are crumbling to dust as we speak /j also, first-ever time writing for him, so i might edit this as time goes on !

poor thing doesn't know what to give haruko at first. he'll try to ask his friends for ideas but to be honest they weren't much help (god forbid hanamichi gifts her cheap jewelry or plain clothing or a dollhouse-). so after the usual distribution of headbutts for such bad suggestions, mito had the brilliant idea to make hanamichi gift her a home-cooked bento.

and of course, hanamichi took that idea as his own and dragged the others into the nearest market for fresh ingredients. they pooled all the money they could find in their pockets and threatened bargained the store owners into letting them buy it for cheap and walked out with a bag full of vegetables and meat.

at home, the five friends got to work, teaching hanamichi how to make the perfect bento - they instructed hanamichi how to boil an egg without burning the stove; they taught hanamichi how to fry sausages without turning his fingers into soot; they helped hanamichi cook the rice without busting the electric cooker.

"the genius doesn't need anyone teaching him how to cook !" - hanamichi, as his pan starts smoking and flames start appearing.

when the practice-bento was finished, everyone crowded around it for the taste test. admittedly, the potatoes were undercooked and the meat still a bit hard to chew, but for hanamichi's first time cooking a full meal, it was a damn good first try.

 look, you can't look at me in the eye and tell me hanamichi doesn't live on cupped ramen and packed food from the local convenience store -

tomorrow arrives - haruko’s birthday.

hanamichi is up before the sun even rose, his eyebrows furrowed in concentration as he watches over the boiling eggs and the rice bubbling on the cooker.

twice he forgot his friends' instructions and panicked (was it two teaspoons of soy sauce or three?), but he still managed to get it cooked and arranged in a neat little bento box.

steaming, shiny rice goes in one corner, sausages and meatballs go into another; boiled potatoes and eggs cluster together in a little square of warmth and homemade sweet-and-sour sauce sits delicately in its own little place.

so he goes off to school, haruko’s bento box wrapped in a thick, red-gingham patterned cloth.

everything that day seems to pass by in a whirlwind - one moment he and the sakuragi squad was laughing and joking on the train, the next the bell was already ringing for the school lunch.

 he was out of his seat before anybody else could exit, and found haruko walking out of her own classroom, laughing with matsui and fijii and then smiling as she spots him.

"hi, hanamichi !" she says, and hanamichi's heart melts into a gooey puddle on the floor. "is that your lunch?" she asks, nodding to the bento box he was holding.

"u-uh, no," he says gruffly, and he bows to her with the bento box outstretched in his hands. "it's for you, happy birthday haruko." even when bowing she can see the intense red blush spreading across his cheeks.

haruko beams, and she takes the bento, admiring the warmth it emitted. hanamichi straightens up. "did you cook this yourself?" she asks, a smile playing around her lips. hanamichi nods.

she beams even wider, her smile as bright as the sun, warm enough to melt even the coldest of hearts. "thank you," she says, and she stands on her tiptoes and gives hanamichi a soft peck on the cheek.

streamers and confetti and the loud, celebratory noise of a party popper erupts from the end of the corridor ; matsui and fijii’s jaws dropped.

hanamichi is shocked. he touches the spot where haruko’s lips met his cheek and opens his mouth to say something, but before he could, the sakuragi squad jumps up from behind him, laughing and patting him on the back.

"congratulations, hanamichi !" "so our all-nighter didn't go to waste !" "hey hey, haruko, didn't you know he almost burned the kitchen last night-"

"SHUT UP !" hanamichi manages to shout, and he gives his four friends a strong headbutt. haruko laughs ; she always did love their weird little antics.

"d-do you like it?" hanamichi asks, his demeanor so different from how he was acting just a second earlier. haruko shrugs. "not sure, want to eat lunch with me and know how it tastes?"

sakuragi squad jumps straight up, shouting at hanamichi to go with her amidst laughter. matsui and fijii gasps out loud and giggles.

 "alright, then," he says, blushing intensely as she slips her arm around his. he looks back at his friends as the two of them walk, and sends a dashing grin and a thumbs up.
