The Harry Potter Mythology Fest 2024:

The Orchard by fleurdejasmine - M, one-shot - Hermione, daughter of Hermes and Circe, has the ability to remember everything she’s ever read. As Zeus’ record keeper, she is ordered to memorize the scrolls kept in Hera’s hidden orchard. This series, comprising 3 stories, is a wonderful take on the third-person observer. It throws Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape into Muggle America and the sights of precocious twelve-year-old Adela.

Kelly's Minerva/Severus is always rich and complex, and the original characters, especially Adela, are wonderful.

It's wry, and tender, and funny, and exactly what I'd imagine these characters to be like in this situation. It's a lovely read for those who like happy endings without sappiness or doe-eyed visions of happily-ever-after.

Why You Should Check It Out:

Eldritcher's stories cut to the heart of what it is to long for what we know we should not want, and knowing the price, want it just the same.

The main characters are self-aware enough to understand important things about themselves and one another but often helpless to change their course, which is, of course, the most human of failings.

Eldritcher has an excellent sense of the little details that reveal character. The stories have the quality of a particularly lucid dream; they suggest things, but never hit the you over the head with them, allowing the reader to suss out the important bits and the themes that animate them, and there are occasional surprises that shock the reader out of any misplaced complacency regarding what a particular character will and won't do.

Literary and mythological allusions and references are woven deftly through the work, and I adore the way Eldritcher makes Hogwarts castle a character in its own right.

Why You Should Check It Out:

If you're looking for total immersion in the wizarding world, thess are the series for you.

This is truly an epic arc, with over a million words total, but the length allows MMADfan the scope to create an incredibly vivid wizarding world, populated with a huge cast of canon and original characters. The wordlbuilding is impressive, and the storytelling vivid, but what stands out to me are the characters. Not only does the author breathe fascinating life into canon characters we see only peripherally in the HP series, but she creates some of the best OCs I've ever encountered, in fanfic or original fic. (Her Gertrude Gamp and Gertrude's son Gareth are two of the best I've ever read.)

I love stories that show us what characters like Minerva and Severus keep hidden—their foibles, their doubts, and their inconsistencies.

These are not comfortable people, and there are no easy answers here. It’s a guilty pleasure to watch two intelligent characters try, and so often fail, to understand their own motivations and needs. They butt heads, rub up against one another (literally and figuratively), and ultimately provide something that neither of them finds elsewhere.

The comfort they find is matched by the pain they cause one another, as I can only imagine it would be, given these characters and their circumstances.

In addition to the delicious, delicious angst, it includes some moments of lightness and humor, which settle perfectly on these two.

Why You Should Check It Out:

This series is a long-arc story that hits—and artfully subverts—many of the usual tropes and expectations for an Albus/Minerva fic.

The first fic focusses on the development of Minerva and Albus's relationship, from her schooldays to her early days as a teacher.

The second is a brief interlude with Poppy and Rolanda, and the latter's dream of an erotic interlude with their friend, Minerva.

The third continues the Albus/Minerv story, with an additional focus on the James/Lily arc that begins near the end of the first story.

The series wins a place alongside some of my favorites because it delivers what I always want but seldom get from fic about this ship: a deep and unflinching exploration of the complexities of a relationship between two powerful, flawed characters. It digs beyond the obvious issues of power dynamics and age differences to get at fundamental differences between their personalities and worldviews which love may or may not overcome.

This Minerva and Albus are each far from perfect, and far from perfect for one another, and author margaretrevie doesn’t shy away from the less attractive aspects of their personalities: Albus’s enormous ego and his desperate need to be admired, and Minerva’s intolerance of what she sees as frailty or moral imperfection. The length of the fic gives the characters room to change and grow over time, which is part of what makes it such a satisfying read.

The story also features some powerful magic of a kind that one encounters in other fics, but rarely are the practical and emotional ramifications for the characters who practice it so thoughtfully and poignantly explored. I won’t spoil it for you with too much detail, but the author takes a trope particularly beloved of AD/MM shippers and gives it a realistic (in the HP realm) treatment that delivers a punch to the gut.

Added to all that, you’ll find satisfying and surprising backstory for several familiar HP characters as icing on this lovely, richly textured cake.

Day 17: A fic that made you cry

Jumping in to join!! I was scrolling through my bookmarks and found a few that really need more attention, but this one in particular needs so much more.

Summary:

There are some stories that exist over and over again. And over and over again. And James Potter is part of one of them, and always has been, even if Sirius was the only one to see it.

You guys. This fic. The first time I read it, I was blown away by the sheer creativity and genius of how the Arthurian legends are incorporated in here. The second time I read it, I laughed, cried, and somehow managed to smile the whole way through. It takes skill to characterise the Marauders as well as they’re characterised here: Sirius’ single-minded focus is very in character in addition to being very charming; Remus’ calm is both a reality and a front, and I was pleasantly surprised when he jumped in to join Sirius’ shenanigans without too many pointed jabs at Sirius’ ‘instability’; Peter’s loyalty is somehow still unwavering even post-betrayal, which feels incredibly on point; Harry’s confusion is so me the first time I read this he’s SO well written in this one; and James, who (quite literally) pops up a bit later in the fic (in an official capacity), is just… *chef’s kiss*. The Marauders were a tight knit group made up out of genius and tired people, and this fic showcases them PERFECTLY. I cannot stress that enough. It is 100% Marauder absurdity, and that makes it so real.

Archetypes has 41 kudos and was posted in 2019–I’m certain that the reason for this is because it’s tagged very sparingly, and a lot of the ‘hard hitters’ that apply to this fic weren’t added. It just hasn’t reached the visibility it deserves.

A snippet:

“Hey Sirius, what’s happening? Can you tell us?”

“I suppose. Yes. See in sixth year it was just a game – a backup plan – but now it seemed back in fashion. I couldn’t say – I didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up or get told to drop it.”

“Not that you would have done.” Lupin interjects.

“No. No I wouldn’t have done.” Sirius is still grinning but there’s a dark gleam in his eyes. “But it’s the same story again and again over history; it would be almost a crime to not try to bring him back.”

Harry sees, for the first time since their first meeting in the Shack, exactly why people thought Sirius could have been a death eater. Right now he looks very, very dangerous.

“Arthur?” He asks, swallowing his apprehension – but he still doesn’t understand the urgency behind this.

“No.” Sirius shakes his head. “No. James!”

“My dad?” Harry’s head shoots up.

Sirius and Lupin both nod. Harry’s mouth drops open; now he understands. His dad. Wow.

16. if you had to choose the main pairing in one of your fics, which one would you choose, and what would you change the ship to? how?

hm this is a really hard question because i always find that characters shape the fic? like, all the characters i write have such insanely powerful personalities, fuck. that said You (need to run, trust too easily, liar liar liar) ((which, sidenote, is objectively my worst titled fic ever)) i might change to a hestia carrow/ginny fic because i think i actually wrote it initially for a non-fandom thing so all the characters were really vague so nobody would say “hey that’s harry fuckin potter” and hhh sometimes i feel like they’re not quite harry and tom. however i do think that it would suit ginny and hestia? idk. it also has the benefit of being genuine femslash rather than genderbent

i also think that maybe i should’ve done ffslg as poly harry/ginny/tom lmao

uhhh okay so i’m just gonna run thru a couple. red dragon inspired when we’re alone; hunger games inspired only one survives; heathers has probably been tangentially related to almost everything i’ve ever written; the love hypothesis inspired kissing a stranger (i read the book to spoil the ending for a friend i was pissed off at and went ‘well i can do better’ but i loved the concept lmao); bbc sherlock inspired a couple fics; norse & greek mythology inspired a few more.

now onto the more interesting stuff! i associate that one buzzcocks song (ever fallen in love) with ffslg to the extent that when i finish & podfic it (yes that’s in the future!) i’m using it as the opening for chapter four. it emphasises just about everything tom is feeling—he’s fallen in love with his best friend, and said best friend is marrying someone else, AKA his OTHER best friend who he also doesn’t want to hurt. it’s a lose/lose scenario for tom, because he can either hurt one or both of his best friends or suffer alone!! it’s like he managed to find one of the two people he should never have fallen in love with and fell in love with him!!! he’s well and truly fucked lmao

i don’t remember who the poem is by but it goes ‘there is something wrong with you / there is something wrong with you that is also wrong with me’ and when i speed wrote a fic to stopgap the schedule of bloody kisses fest due to the number of people dropping out or asking for extensions last minute this played in my mind a lot! i was focused on the concept of a shared otherness: harry is hated by the town for being a freak, tom comes up from london a stranger and a monster. they bond over this otherness and further their otherness, but they do it TOGETHER. they become vampires and lose their capacity to feel and ruin their own lives but the thing that’s wrong with them is wrong with both of them!! a shared otherness!! ostracised from society to the extent that they could find one another!!

Harry Potter - the OG, love of my life

A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), Throne of Glass (ToG), and Crescent City (CC) by Sarah J Maas - the way these books have consumed my life for the past year, ACOTAR gets all the hype and has its own special kind of magic, but Throne of Glass is SJM's true epic masterpiece. Love that SJM has easter eggs for her other books in each series. Currently reading CC2 🎉 You can find me reigning supreme and feilding new reader questions over on r/throneofglassseries. Honestly, I could go on and on here, but this is just the start of the list.

From Blood and Ash (FBAA) by Jennifer L Armentrout was my go-to series after SJM. There's currently 4 books out (with the recent release of TWOTQ 🎉) as wells the first book out in a prequel series that will tie into the main storyline. (The Kieran and Reaver snark-fest is currently carrying this series lol)

The Folk of the Air trilogy (TFOTA, better known by the first book The Curel Prince) by Holly Black - devious faeries, court politics, badass MC, what more can I say?

Grisha Verse (this encompasses the Shadow and Bone trilogy, Six of Crows duology, and King of Scars duology) by Leigh Bardugo. (I am living for Ben Barnes as the Darkling in the Netflix adaptation)

Lord of the Rings (LotR) and A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF, aka Game of Thrones) - the high fantasy classics. Currently doing my first in-depth Tolkien read to follow-up with the Silmarillion because I'm a whore for book lore. Wheel of Time is also on my TBR for this summer.

Books that aren't in my bio but probably should be and I'll talk about them anyways because there can never be too many books:

The Plated Prisoner by Raven Kennedy - Gild, Glint, Gleam, and Glow comes out this May 🎉. This one is a bit of a dark horse the fantasy romance genre right now because everyone is recommending it but it doesn't really have its own fanbase yet. It started to come into its own in book 2, and book 3 left us realing. Just check the content warnings for this one

Kingdom of the Wicked by Keri Maniscalco - I love a morally grey character and desserts, so this one got an automatic pass lol. Witches and prices of Hell make a pretty good team, and book 2 definitely picked up, so I'm looking forward to book 3 this fall.

✨Manacled✨ by SenLinYu - now it may be unorthodox to include a fanfic in a book rec list, but Manacled is better than many published works I have read and it's had me in a deathgrip since I read two summers ago.

Twilight and The Mortal Instruments (Shadowhunter Chronicles) - there's a post that goes around saying that whatever you were obsessed with between the ages of 12-14 stays with you for life...well it's been 14 years and everytime I think I'm out, something sucks me right back in again lol

Percy Jackson and the Olympians (see the explanation from above lol) - I don't know if these are a had to have been there at the time, but they definitely sparked my interest in Greek Mythology. Rick's two follow-up series are on my neverending TBR.
