OK if The BDA Went to camp half blood who would be their godly parent /patron?
Main BDA members:
Eddie Balthazar—Ponos (personified as the spirit of labor, toil, and hardship), Hephaestus (god of fire, volcanoes, forges, and blacksmithing), or Hypnos (the god of sleep).
Maybe Hypnos is his patron and Ponos or Hephaestus is his godly parent/grandparent if he were a demigod? Same could be said for their roman counterparts.
Harry Badun—Nemesis (goddess of retribution), Psyche (goddess of the soul), Dike (goddess of justice, morality, and order), and Themis (goddess of justice, law, order, etc).
Again, one of these (or their roman counterparts, if they have any) could be his mom or grandmother or his patron. Or a mixture of both.
Hermie Bing—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre) or his roman counterpart.
Jace Badun—Hercules (god of strength) or Soteria (goddess or spirit (daimon) of safety and salvation, deliverance, and preservation from harm).
Reza—Nut (goddess of the sky, stars, cosmos, mothers, astronomy, and the universe in the ancient Egyptian religion) or Urania (goddess of astronomy and one of the nine Muses in greek mythology).
Yzla—Hecate (greek goddess variously associated with crossroads, night, light, magic, protection from witchcraft, drugs, the Moon, graves, and ghosts), Mama Quilla (inca goddess of the moon, marriage, and menstruation), Urcaguary (inca goddess of metals, jewels and other underground items of great value), and Urcuchillay (inca god worshiped by Incan herders, believed to be a multicolored male llama who watched over animals).
Mystery the nunchuck welding turtle—Thaumas (an old sea god who personified the wonders of the sea).
Proteges:
Ace—Ares (God of war and courage, civil disturbance, riots, rebellions and uprisings) or Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre).
Avalon Mim-Knightley—Hecate (greek goddess variously associated with crossroads, night, light, magic, protection from witchcraft, drugs, the Moon, graves, and ghosts).
Bill—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre)
Chester—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre), Pan (god of shepherds, flocks, the wilds, hunting, and music), or Thalia (goddess of comedy and idyllic poetry).
Chloe Charming—Tyche (goddess of chance), Nemesis (goddess of retribution), Ares (god of war and courage, civil disturbance, riots, rebellions and uprisings), or Athena (goddess of wisdom, war, and the crafts).
Danny Darling— Pan (god of shepherds, flocks, the wilds, hunting, and music), Thalia (goddess of comedy and idyllic poetry), or Melpomene (goddess of tragedy and chorus. Member of the muses).
Dee and Twee—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre) or Castor (goddess of Horsemanship).
Dora—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre) or Arimanius (god of rats and darkness).
Edith Olympian—Eris (Greek goddess of strife and discord).
Everlee D'Aquire—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre) or Melinoe (goddess of ghosts and nightmares).
Glauco White—Boreas (god of the cold north wind and the bringer of winter) or Pan (god of shepherds, flocks, the wilds, hunting, and music).
Hadie—Hades (god of the dead and the king of the underworld) and/or Persephone (Goddess of the dead, the underworld, grain, and nature, and queen of the underworld).
Katy/Katy—Dionysus (god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre), Apollo (god of god of archery, music and dance, truth and prophecy, healing and diseases, the Sun and light, poetry, and more) or Asclepius (god of medicine and healing).
Khalil Hunterson—Revanta (Indian patron god of hunting, guardian deity of warriors and horses, and protector from the dangers of forests), Pan (god of shepherds, flocks, the wilds, hunting, and music), and Aristaeus (god of bee-keeping, cheese-making, herding, olive-growing and hunting).
Lada Hag—Hecate (greek goddess variously associated with crossroads, night, light, magic, protection from witchcraft, drugs, the Moon, graves, and ghosts) or Nemesis (goddess of retribution).

Paro Imp—Hedone (goddess of pleasure, enjoyment, and delight), Oizys (goddess of grief, anxiety, and depression), or Epione (goddess of soothing pain and the giver of health).
Red—Hecate (greek goddess variously associated with crossroads, night, light, magic, protection from witchcraft, drugs, the Moon, graves, and ghosts), Eros (god of love, desire, and fertility), or Aphrodite (goddess of love, beauty, desire, and sexuality).
Also Hestia (the virgin goddess of the hearth and the home) would make a good patron.
Shan Deja—Ares (god of war and courage, civil disturbance, riots, rebellions and uprisings) and Nemesis (goddess of retribution).
Zuri Crocuta—Agé ( patron god of animals, hunters, and the wilderness in the Fon people's mythology), Demeter (goddess of the harvest, agriculture, and grain), Pan (god of shepherds, flocks, the wilds, hunting, and music), or Ares (god of war and courage, civil disturbance, riots, rebellions and uprisings).
Also Artemis (goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, childbirth, care of children, and chastity) would make a good patron.
Other:
Elle—Poseidon (god of the sea and waters, as well as of horses and earthquakes) or Amphitrite (goddess of the seas).
I know non greeks wouldn't be at camp half-blood but since we know Roman and other non greek demigods exist, I figured it'd be fine.

"But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder, As they tear your hopes apart -- As they turn your dream to shame...!
You can take -- (And still I dream he'll come to me,) You can give... (That we will live the years together,) Let him be! (But there are dreams that cannot be,) Let him live! (And there are storms we cannot weather!)
If I die, let me die! Let him live..."

Talbott's Death's-Head-Hawkmoth bolo tie // original inspiration for Carewyn's dress
x~x~x~x
Hi all! Recently Hogwarts Mystery put out a rather underwhelming sidequest about Voldemort possibly returning to the Wizarding World, and I decided it'd be a great time to make some Second Wizarding War content for my girl Carewyn...specifically about the good friend she grew even closer to in that time, Talbott Winger!
Even at school, Talbott and Carewyn did discover they were truly "birds of a feather," upon becoming friends in their fourth year. They're both the type to put walls up around their hearts to hide their more fragile emotions, as well as to prefer the company of a few close friends to large crowds, and they both harbor a strong desire to improve the world around them despite the personal traumas of their respective childhoods. Post-Hogwarts both Talbott and Carewyn even pursue careers in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement as an Auror and lawyer, respectively, and it's with Talbott, his Auror partner Tonks, his Auror mentor Mad-Eye Moody, Hitwizard Ben, her own legal mentor Amelia Bones, and fellow lawyer Chester Davies that Carewyn ends up working with most closely, at the start of her career.
When the Second Wizarding War happened, though...well, that list of Ministry associates Talbott and Carewyn had accrued shrank very, very fast. Amelia Bones and her entire family was assassinated not long after Voldemort's return was fully revealed in the spring of 1995. Mad-Eye was killed in the summer of 1997 while trying to get Harry Potter to safety before his 17th birthday. Tonks had to immediately go into hiding after Bill Weasley's wedding due to her connection with the Order, and Ben had to go into hiding not long later from the newly formed Muggle-Born Registration Commission. Even Chester Davies ended up taking an assignment in Romania during a large stretch of the War, so as to support and protect his old associate and fellow Prefect Felix Rosier, who was a persistent mark for Death Eaters trying to force him to join their ranks. Several of Carewyn and Talbott's other friends outside the Ministry, like Chiara Lobosca, Barnaby Lee, and Bill Weasley, had also been forced underground to evade the Death Eaters. This left Talbott and Carewyn largely alone to deal with the blatant rot and evil that had corrupted their Department -- the place where they'd both so desperately wanted to make a difference, and yet now was forcing them to march lock-step with their disgusting whims.
Fortunately one other thing Talbott and Carewyn shared was their determination to not just cowardly shrink in the face of evil. And so covertly, both of them found a way to support the fight against Voldemort. Neither of them ever joined the Order of the Phoenix like Tonks did -- Carewyn had way too much negative feelings toward Dumbledore to ever accept him as her "commander," and Talbott preferred to follow his father's example and not explicitly join any formal organization -- but they were still valuable in their own way in opposing the Death Eaters. Carewyn smuggled intelligence out of the Ministry to anti-Voldemort causes and even took charge of the Ministry and put Umbridge under citizen's arrest during the Battle of Hogwarts. Talbott was a pivotal correspondent at Potterwatch (using the name "Raptor"), reporting on the glossed-over casualties of the War, but also frequently writing and reading aloud inspirational pieces to promote hope in Voldemort's disheartened victims. And they also worked together sometimes to smuggle prisoners out of the Ministry to safehouses, such as Carewyn's future "ward" Erik Apollo and eventual legal partner Orion Amari and his daughter Eos.
Although in retrospect, their fight was not in vain, and their eventual triumph could be seen as worth all of the turmoil and pain they suffered through, however, this doesn't mean that in the midst of it, Carewyn and Talbott didn't experience their fair share of despair, hopeless, and grief. One of these such moments was on Boxing Day, 1997, when Carewyn visited Talbott at his home in Godric's Hollow. He had called into work that day without any warning -- a very unusual occurrence -- and it prompted Carewyn right away to check on him. She arrived very late at night, when just about everyone else in Godric's Hollow was asleep -- and when Carewyn entered Talbott's Secret-guarded cottage, she found her friend collapsed in his armchair, his tear-stained face more worn and exhausted than Carewyn had just about ever seen it. Talbott had immediately bolted up at someone entering, wand raised, and had not relaxed even an molecule of an inch until they exchanged questions and answers that would verify each other's identity.
"What name did I call you, in the poem I wrote after we first met?" "'Looking-Glass Eyes.' What did you bring me on my first night in the Hospital Wing, after Rowan's death?" "A handwritten copy of the poem 'Immortality' by Claire Harner."
It was only then that Talbott slowly lowered his wand and, seeming a bit weak on his feet, swayed back to his armchair. Carewyn immediately rushed over to support her friend as he collapsed back down into it, wiping the moist mix of sweat and tears from his face.
"...Bathilda Bagshot is dead," he said at last.
Carewyn looked up, horrified.
"She'd kind of retreated into her house, these last few months," Talbott explained lowly. "An understandable thing, under the circumstances. But on Christmas, her house just blew up out of nowhere, and the Aurors were sent to investigate, and...well, even if Yaxley's crew tried to cover it all up, I saw her body, before they took it..."
Talbott's head fell as he closed his eyes, almost as if wanting to shut out the image.
"She'd been torn to pieces, Carewyn," he whispered. "Like some disgusting parasite had buried itself inside of her and then just ripped her apart..."
Carewyn slowly eased herself down onto the footstool beside his armchair, her blue eyes rippling with sorrow.
"Talbott, I'm so sorry...I know she was kind to you, when you first moved in here. Mum's always spoken so well of her -- everything I've ever heard of Bathilda Bagshot was how sweet and helpful she was..."
"She was a good woman," Talbott agreed.
He exhaled heavily through his nose as he slowly opened his eagle-like eyes.
"That's not all, though. After the fact, it came out that the reason the Aurors were called out so quickly was that 'Undesirable Number 1' may have been spotted in the vicinity of Bagshot's house."
Carewyn gave a start. "Potter?"
Talbott nodded.
"When I followed up with the rest of Potterwatch, they didn't have any real idea what he might've been doing there or what happened to Bagshot, while he was in her house...but Lupin thinks it's very likely he came to Godric's Hollow because it's where his parents died. If so...then it's possible that Bagshot found him and brought him back to her house, before whatever happened."
Carewyn's eyes softened with sadness. She knew full well Godric's Hollow hosted the old ruins of the Potter home -- she'd passed the old memorial a few times when she'd come to visit Talbott in the past. Talbott even walked over there with Carewyn, Tonks, and Chiara one Halloween not long after he first moved in, so they could all pay their respects.
"I know it's silly for me to wish I was there, but..." Talbott brought his head into his hand, his eyes falling down to the ground. "...He must've come to see his parents. They're buried in a plot only about ten feet away from where my parents are -- a plot I've visited on every holiday, bar this year..."
Talbott closed his eyes and hung his head.
"If I'd just visited this year, maybe I would've been there, when Potter was. He could've hidden out at my place instead -- I could've been more able to fight whatever attacked him and Bagshot -- "
"Talbott, don't blame yourself!" Carewyn said fiercely.
Her hand clutched at his arm, even as her eyes likewise fell down to the carpet, rather than remaining on him.
"...We don't know what it is that attacked Potter and Bagshot. For all we know, it could've been some elaborate trap set up by You-Know-Who, in case Potter ever showed up. After all, you moved here because your parents are buried here...it would make perfect sense if Potter wanted to visit this place as well..."
"Of course it does!" said Talbott, his voice strained. "That's all the more reason to wish I was there. I understand why he'd want to be here...I understand it probably more than anyone else..."
Carewyn's hand ran gently along Talbott's forearm, trying to comfort him. Talbott looked down at his own feet as he once again exhaled.
"Fred and George talk about him all the time. Lupin and Shacklebolt, as well. He's a lot like you, from what I gather -- modest and brave...with the ridiculous tendency to play the hero in every situation," the slightest of wry smiles flickered at the corners of his lips before quickly fading. "...Most of all...I gather he's never forgotten his parents. Lupin said once that the only real memories Potter has of his parents is of the night they died -- of them selflessly trying to save him, even as Vol -- the Dark Lord closed in..."
Talbott's lips twitched unhappily -- he hated the Taboo that forced him not to use Voldemort's real name.
"...I know I've never met the kid, but...I know what that's like. The not being able to forget. The knowledge that your parents gave everything, just so you could live. The shadow it casts over you...and how much it makes you fear losing anyone else...all those people who've become your family, in the place of the one you lost..."
His reddish eyes seemed to burn. Carewyn could feel waves of empathetic pain pooling off of her friend, even without him looking her right in the eye.
"I know it's silly, but...even if I don't really know Potter, and it's not like he'd have any reason to trust me in that circumstance when he doesn't know me from Adam...I wish I'd been there, for him. Because...I've been him, more than once."
The sorrow in Carewyn's eyes deepened. She bowed her head, and her forehead ended up lightly grazing the top of Talbott's head as she closed her eyes.
"You feeling that way is not silly," Carewyn said very softly. "It's noble. It's kind. And I know...if Potter is as much like you as he sounds to me...then he would appreciate knowing he wasn't alone."
Her low volume couldn't mask the strong emotions that choked her voice. Even though Talbott lacked Carewyn's flair for Legilimency, Talbott knew at his heart that -- like him -- Carewyn was likewise full of empathy for Potter's pain...because she, like both of them, also understood how much grief could isolate you...how much time could never take away the phantom pains of that loss.
Do not stand by my grave, and weep -- I am not there, I do not sleep...
The memory of the poem he'd given Carewyn after Rowan's death ran over Talbott's mind again as he looked up at his old friend. He took in the paleness of her face and the pain in her shut eyes, and he found himself bringing his own hand down to hold her arm, the way she was his. Talbott didn't speak, instead just keeping their posture as it was, with both of them leaning on each other and holding each other's arms.
Sometimes true solidarity -- true friendship -- requires no words.

Harris Clinches Majority of Democratic Delegates (NYT/AP) Vice President Kamala Harris yesterday moved swiftly to assert herself as the de facto Democratic nominee for president, as virtually every potential remaining rival bowed out and she clinched the support of enough delegates to win the nomination. The Associated Press reported Ms. Harris had secured the backing of more than the 1,976 delegates needed to capture the nomination in the first round of voting. The pledged support is not binding until the delegates cast their votes, which party officials said would take place between Aug. 1 and Aug. 7.
Biden Shepherded Europe on Ukraine and NATO. What Happens Now? (NYT) European leaders have been relying on President Biden to guide them through some of the continent’s darkest days in decades. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, they found in him a shepherd of sorts, who worked with them to unite behind Kyiv and shaped the response to Russia’s aggression. He pushed European allies to get it together when it came to defense and to commit to spend more on NATO. And he encouraged them to subscribe to his narrative of being part of a fearless, principled band of countries standing up for democracy against ever-growing threats. What happens now?
Data shows hurricanes and earthquakes grab headlines but inland counties top disaster list (AP) Floyd County keeps flooding and the federal government keeps coming to the rescue. In July 2022, at least 40 people died and 300 homes were damaged when the eastern Kentucky county flooded. It was the 13th time in 12 years that the rural county was declared a federal disaster. These are disasters so costly that local governments feel they can’t pay for it all, so the governor asks the president to declare a disaster freeing up federal funds. In 2023, Floyd County was declared a disaster again for 14th time. And it isn’t even the nation’s most disaster-prone county. Neighboring Johnson County has 15 disasters declared by the Federal Emergency Management Agency since 2011. When it comes to extreme weather and other so-called natural disasters, people generally look to the hurricane or earthquake-prone coasts and say that’s where the danger is. But that’s not where the highest concentration of federally declared disasters are. Eight of the nine counties with the most federal declared disasters since 2011—more than a dozen each—are in Kentucky, with one in Vermont. “California and Louisiana and I would say now even Texas, Florida, for sure, they soak up all the oxygen when you hear about these giant storms,” said Amy Chester, director of the disaster prevention-focused Rebuild By Design nonprofit group. “But what you’re not hearing about are these storms that are happening all the time, and that’s just becoming like, regular to places like Vermont.”
Frustrated Californians May Be Ready for a Tougher Approach to Crime (NYT) Deodorant, shampoo and underwear are all under lock and key in many stores in California. Retail clerks are often told to ignore shoplifters, after a handful of store employees who confronted thieves were assaulted or killed. Video clips of smash-and-grab crews snatching armloads of merchandise have gone viral. Many Democratic state leaders, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, have acknowledged the state’s crime problems. Mr. Newsom was captured on a hot mic in February describing a shoplifting incident at a Target store in which he witnessed a man shoplifting without being confronted by anyone. “I was like, ‘Why am I spending $380—everyone can walk the hell right out,’” he said. Californians of all political stripes have become fed up with the problems plaguing supermarkets and retail stores, not to mention car break-ins and open-air drug use. Now the state’s lawmakers and voters are weighing what to do. A coalition of law enforcement figures, business owners and relatives of fentanyl addicts want to reverse the 2014 ballot measure known as Proposition 47, which reduced penalties for shoplifting and drug possession.
A U.K. Deportation Plan Cost $900 Million. Only Four People Left. (NYT) The previous British government spent far more than previously announced on a contentious plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, it was announced on Monday. The policy, which called for sending asylum seekers to the African nation for processing and resettlement, was championed by successive Conservative prime ministers as their flagship plan to tackle irregular migration. But no asylum seekers were ever deported to Rwanda under the initiative. Four people were put on planes to the central African nation this year, but they were asylum seekers who went voluntarily after being offered £3,000 each. The policy cost the government some £700 million, or just over $900 million, Britain’s new home secretary, Yvette Cooper, told Parliament on Monday. “It is the most shocking waste of taxpayers’ money I’ve ever seen,” Ms. Cooper, whose office is responsible for overseeing immigration, told lawmakers.
Competing and parenting: Some athletes are doing double duty at the Olympics (AP) From training and competing to preparing bottles for feedings and changing diapers, some of the Olympians at the Paris Games will be balancing their roles of athletes and parents. There is the British rower who raised more than $4,000 through GoFundMe to go to Paris “as a full-time mom.” The American marathon runner who trained with his daughters’ support by the track. The New Zealand rowers who sang children’s songs to motivate each other after rough nights waking up to take care of their babies. There will be some help from organizers this time for athletes in Paris juggling the demands of elite sports with the tasks of parenthood. The International Olympic Committee and Paris organizers set up what they call the first Olympic Village nursery to allow athletes to be closer to their children and have quality time with them during the Games.
Russia Sentences Alsu Kurmasheva, American Editor, to a Penal Colony (NYT) A court in Russia said on Monday that it had convicted a Russian American editor for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, an American broadcaster funded by the United States government, to six and a half years in a penal colony for spreading false information about the Russian Army. The conviction of the editor, Alsu Kurmasheva, 47, took place on Friday. A court in Kazan, a major Russian city 500 miles east of Moscow, heard the case against Ms. Kurmasheva rapidly and behind closed doors. It took the court less than 10 days to process the case, the records showed. Ms. Kurmasheva was convicted of “spreading false information about the Russian Army,” a charge that Russian law enforcement has used to silence critics of the invasion of Ukraine. Stephen Capus, the president and chief executive of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, called the conviction a “mockery of justice.” The charges were related to a book Ms. Kurmasheva edited after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, “No to War,” which featured stories of 40 Russians who opposed the invasion.
Ukraine confronts labor shortage as need for soldiers drains workforce (Washington Post) Going to work is an escape for Tatyiana Ustymenko. She rides an elevator down more than 1,500 feet into a coal mine and leaves behind her cellphone—meaning no distractions from the latest developments at the eastern front line just 60 miles away. Were it not for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, however, Ustymenko wouldn’t have this job. The coal mine in Pavlohrad allowed women to work underground for the first time in its history only after Russia invaded in February 2022. It was desperate to fill the many vacancies left by men who joined the military. The mine is not the only workplace experiencing a critical labor shortage. Millions of Ukrainians moved abroad to escape Moscow’s brutal bombardment, and of those who stayed, hundreds of thousands of men have traded their jobs for military service. Now, with Kyiv ramping up its mobilization efforts, businesses expect that workers will be even harder to find, further straining Ukraine’s crippled economy.
Philippine president orders shutdown of Chinese-run online gambling industry employing thousands (AP) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday ordered an immediate ban on widespread and mostly Chinese-run online gaming operations, accusing them of venturing into crimes, including financial scams, human trafficking, torture, kidnappings and murder. His move to ban the Chinese-run online gambling outfits—estimated to number more than 400 across the Philippines and employing tens of thousands of Chinese and Southeast Asian nationals—came amid a crackdown backed by Beijing. That has led to the shutdown of several sprawling complexes where authorities suspect thousands of Chinese, Vietnamese and other nationals mostly from Southeast Asia have been illegally recruited and forced to work in dismal conditions.
Hamas and Fatah sign declaration in Beijing on ending yearslong rift as war rages in Gaza (AP) Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah signed a declaration in Beijing on ending a yearslong rift, Chinese state media said Tuesday, taking a step toward potentially resolving the deep divide between the sides. The declaration by the two heavyweights of Palestinian politics—and other smaller Palestinian groups—to form a unity government for the Palestinian territories is the result of the latest in a series of talks meant to unite the sides. But previous declarations have failed, including a similar deal in 2011, casting doubt over whether the China-sponsored negotiations might actually lead to a resolution. Still, the future of Gaza is undecided, with Israel vehemently opposed to any role by Hamas in governing Gaza. It has also rejected calls from the United States for the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority to run Gaza after the war ends.
Israeli government quietly sends millions to unauthorized West Bank settler outposts (AP) The Israeli government has budgeted millions of dollars to protect small, unauthorized Jewish farms in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, underwriting tiny outposts meant to grow into full-fledged settlements, according to an anti-settlement monitoring group. Documents uncovered by Peace Now illustrate how Israel’s pro-settler government has quietly poured money into the unauthorized outposts, which are separate from its more than 100 officially recognized settlements. Some of those outposts have been linked to settler violence against Palestinians and are sanctioned by the U.S. Palestinians and the international community say all settlements are illegal or illegitimate and undermine hopes for a two-state solution. The Ministry of Settlements and National Mission, which is headed by a far-right settler leader, confirmed it budgeted 75 million shekels ($20.5 million) last year for security equipment for “young settlements”—the term it uses for unauthorized Jewish farms and outposts in the West Bank. The money was quietly authorized in December while the country’s attention was focused on the war against Hamas in Gaza.
Trouble in Kampala (Foreign Policy) Uganda’s main opposition leader, Bobi Wine, said security forces stormed the headquarters of his party, the National Unity Platform, on Monday, and “violently arrested” party officials, ahead of a planned anti-corruption demonstration against the government. Though the Uganda Police Force did not confirm the arrests, it said it was taking precautionary steps to prevent the protest from snowballing, describing it as “potentially anarchic.” The country’s recent protests are aimed at denouncing alleged high-level corruption and human rights abuses under the administration of President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled the country since 1986. Museveni has warned organizers that they are “playing with fire” and has deployed the police and military to various parts of the capital. Dozens of people who tried to march to the parliament building have already been arrested.
A.I. Can Write Poetry, but It Struggles With Math (NYT) In the school year that ended recently, one class of learners stood out as a seeming puzzle. They are hard-working, improving and remarkably articulate. But curiously, these learners—artificially intelligent chatbots—often struggle with math. Chatbots like Open AI’s ChatGPT can write poetry, summarize books and answer questions, often with human-level fluency. These systems can do math, based on what they have learned, but the results can vary and be wrong. They are fine-tuned for determining probabilities, not doing rules-based calculations “The A.I. chatbots have difficulty with math because they were never designed to do it,” said Kristian Hammond, a computer science professor and artificial intelligence researcher at Northwestern University. The world’s smartest computer scientists, it seems, have created artificial intelligence that is more liberal arts major than numbers whiz.

Director: John Ford
Cast: John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz, Harry Carey, Jr., Ward Bond, Mae Marsh, Jane Darwell, Ben Johnson
In the John Wayne/John Ford team-up 3 Godfathers based on Peter B. Kyne's 1913 novel, which had already been screen adapted several time before, including one by Ford himself. Here we have three desperados Bob Hightower (John Wayne, The Shootist), Pete (Pedro Armendáriz, Fort Apache) and The Abilene Kid (Harry Carey Jr., Rio Grande) ride into Welcome, Arizona to rob the bank. They make their escape on horseback but Pete is shot and wounded in the process, and Sheriff Buck Sweet (Ward Bond, Rio Bravo) manages to shoot a hole in their water bag leaving them without water to quench their thirst. Now wandering the desert looking for water and the keen sheriff always one step ahead of them, keeping them from nearby water supplies. They become lost during a sandstorm and losing their horses the trio end-up at a dried-up watering hole where they  they come upon a covered wagon, inside is the Sheriff's niece in labor with a child. They aid her in giving birth, but she dies from complications of birthing, but not before she name the baby  "Robert William Pedro Hightower" after the names of the men, making them promise to save her baby, and naming the godfathers of the child, which they out to do, but when the Sheriff discovers his daughter's death he blames in on the three desperados. This is a wonderful Technicolor  shot western with a terrific cast, the Death Valley backdrop is stunning, especially during the windstorm scenes that look fantastic in restored HD. The restoration looks fantastic, extras include a beautifully restored version of MGM's earlier black and white version Three Godfathers (1936), directed by Richard Boleslavski and starring Chester Morris and Lewis Stone, plus Trailers for both film. I love having the earlier version on here as well, it makes for an interesting contrast and compare as the earlier version is much grimmer, with the Bob character played by Morris being a cutthroat killer, and heavier on the religious analogy, and it's also beautifully shot, making this a fantastic double-feature.

Director: George Roy Hill
Cast: Diane Keaton, Yorgo Voyagis, Klaus Kinski, Sami Frey
In this overstuffed thriller Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) stars as Charlie, an American stage actress working in Europe is recruited by Israeli Intelligence agency Mossad to go undercover to track down a Palestinian terrorist Khalil (Sami Frey, Black Widow) who is targeting high-profile Jews. Directed by George Roy Hill (Funny Farm) and adapted from the 1983 novel of the same name by John le Carré this cloak and dagger thriller also features Klaus Kinski (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) as Israeli spymaster Martin Kurtz, Yorgo Voyagis as spy Joseph who seduces and recruits Charlie, pulling her into a web of lies that ends up with her acting a double-agent being taken to Beirut to train at a terrorist camp before being send on assignment by Khalil to assassinate a Jewish professor. The film takes us to London, Munich, Athens, Jerusalem and Beirut , there's a menagerie of characters that float in and out that make it a bit difficult to stay focused on the main plot. Also not helping is that the film is so overstuffed that character motivations are merely sketches, I never did quite figure out how a pro-Palestinian anti-Zionist left-wing actress was successfully recruited by Israeli intelligence to their cause, let alone to seduce and kill for them. Needless to say, in these current times this is an interesting premise that might get some attention now that its making it;s HD debut, but I doubt it will generate much conversation in that it feels so muddled and muted. This is one that I had never seen nor heard of until it was announced, coming from the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, Funny Farm and The World According to Garp, I was curious about it, but did not end up loving it, even Kinski seems subdued unmotivated this time around, and you could usually count on madman Kinski to deliver the goods, but like everyone else he seems to be struggling with the material. The Blu-ray from Warner Archive is handsomely restored and filmic with uncompressed audio, the only extras is a Trailer.

THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT (1940)
Labe: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region Free

Director: Raoul Walsh
Cast: George Raft, Ann Sheridan, Ida Lupino, Humphrey Bogart, Gale Page, Alan Hale, Roscoe Carns
Amidst the Great Depression independent truckers Joe and Paul Fabrini are barely making ends meet, and at the start of the film are three payments behind on their rig. Paul (Humphrey Bogart, The Maltese Falcon) dreams of spending more time with his wife, and holding down a corporate gig with steady hours and pay, while and Joe (George Raft, Scarface) has his eye on becoming a trucking bigwig someday. At a diner Joe encounters red-haired Cassie Hartley (Ann Sheridan, Angels with Dirty Faces), who is easy on the eyes and quick-witted, they start a relationship and shortly after Paul loses an arm in an accident after he falls asleep at the wheel. Joe ends up accepting a managerial job working for a trucking outfit run by Ed Carlson (Alan Hale Sr.) but finds himself ducking come-on by the guy's wife Lana Carlson (Ida Lupino, The Big Knife), who is straight-up troub le from her first second on screen.  Tired of her drunken husband she murders him and offers Joe a 50% stake in the company, with strings attached, 'natch. However, when Joe announces he's getting married she confesses to the crime, but she's gonna take Joe with her! Joe of her husband's murder in this hard-edged, classic drama directed by Raoul Walsh (High Sierra) starts off as an engrossing wildcat trucker melodrama and evolves into a damn fine noir-tinged thriller with Ida Lupino stealing the show as the increasingly unhinged Mrs. Carlson. Bogart is also terrific, but he plates third fiddle after Lupino's femme fatale and stand-up guy Raft, maybe even fourth after the wisecracking Sheridan who is fantastic as well, but he has presence to spare, and it's not surprise that he went onto Hollywood icon status not long after. The Blu-ray from Warner Archive looks impressive in HD, not a blemish to squint at anywhere, solid grayscale and largely filmlike. Extras include a Lux Radio Theater Broadcast starring George Raft and Lana Turner; a 11-min featurette with historians Leonard Maltin, Eric Lax, and Robert Osborne waxing nostalgic; a vintage 19-min musical-comedy short, plus the trailer.
Special Features:
- Lux Radio Theater Broadcast with George Raft and Lana Turner (6/2/41) (44:22)
- Featurette: Divided Highway - The Story of They Drive By Night (10:35)
- Vintage WB Short SWINGTIME IN THE MOVIES (1938) (19:09)

Director: Ramon Menendez
Cast: Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Rosana De Soto, Andy Garcia, Ingrid Oliu, Vanessa Marquez,  Estelle Harris
The based-on-a-true-story drama Stand and Deliver (1988) is directed by Ramón Menéndez (Money For Nothing), and stars Edward James Olmos (Blade Runner) as Jaime 'Kemo' Escalante, a quirky teacher at a East Los Angeles inner-city high school where the students routinely under perform academically. When he learns that the school accreditation is on the line he sets the goal of having his kids not only learn calculus but to have them ace the Advanced Placement Calculus by their senior year. The unruly kids are initially reluctant and difficult to reign in, but he wins them over through his oddball and unconventional ways of teaching. This is one of those feel good inspirational movies that while largely embellished and dramatized for cinematic effect is was quite an enjoyable watch when I saw it on cable numerous times as a teen, if a bit trite when pitted against reality these days. That's not to say their are not teachers out there who go above and beyond for their kids, there absolutely are and I was lucky to had a few myself, but this is just a bit too saccharine and overly dramatized to ever hot on an emotional level for me, especially now as a jaded adult, this feels like a Hollywood fairytale more than anything resembling reality. The film also stars Lou Diamond Phillips (Supernova) as a gang member who initially gives Kemo hassles, other actors playing students include Ingrid Oliu (Hellhole), and the late Vanessa Marquez (Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence), plus keep an eye out for Estelle Harris (George's mom from Seinfeld!) as a the principal's secretary and Andy Garcia (Geostorm) who plays an agent from  the Educational Testing Service who show up to investigate how a group of poor inner-city kids could do so well, suspecting cheating has transpired.  That said, this was/is a popular movie, hard to believe it's only now debuting on Blu-ray thanks to the Warner Archive, who do a terrific job restoring it for it's Blu-ray debut.

THE BOOB (1926) & WHY BE GOOD? (1929) SILENT CLASSICS DOUBLE-FEATURE
Label: Warner Archive
Region Code: Region-Free
Rating: Unrated
Duration: 60 Minutes 15 Seconds (The Boob) / 81 Minutes 22 Seconds (Why Be Good?)
Audio: DTS-HD MA 2.0 Dual-Mono
Video: B&W 1080p HD Fullscreen (1.33:1)
Director: William A. Wellman & William A. Seiter
Cast: Gertrude Olmstead, George K. Arthur, Joan Crawford, Charles Murray, Colleen Moore
In The Boob (1926) simple country boy Peter Good (George K. Arthur), the titular boob. is crestfallen when his former gal Amy (Gertrude Olmsted) becomes infatuated by city dandy Harry Benson (Antonio D’Algy). His friend Cactus Jim comes up with a plan to win her back by dressing up Peter in a poor-fitting cowboy outfit and arming him with a six-shooter, so he can round-up some alleged bootleggers, ti impress her. Also around are Peter's pal Ham Bunn and his faithful dog Benzine, the latter of whom actually provides most the this flick's entertainment. The plot involves Peter storming a local club The Booklovers, an alleged book-themed speakeasy. It turns out that Benson is a bootlegger, and we also get an early appearance from Joan Crawford (Strait-Jacket) as an undercover prohibition agent. The silent-era sight gags and comedy are a tad uninspired, but the slapstick shenanigans are not without charm.  An early film from director William A. Wellman (Westward the Women) didn;t exactly set my eyeballs on fire but still an interesting comedy surio of the silent era.
The second half of this silent era double-feature is WHy be Good? (1929) wherein wide-eyed star Colleen Moore (The Scarlett Letter) plays vivacious jazz-era flapper Pert Kelly, who is a good girl who works at a department store, but loves to dance in the trendy flapper fashions, have a good time, and enter dance competitions, much to the chagrin of her father who feel the lifestyle is immoral. After a night on the town she meets Winthrop Peabody Jr (Neil Hamilton, Commissioner Gordon from the 60's Batman TV show!) and hit it off bigtime, but it turns out he's the son of her employer which creates complications at the workplace when it is revealed  that he is the new personnel manager at the store, but that his father had forbade him to date the staff. This one has more substance that The Boob, a good mix of melodrama and comedy, some fantastic dancing sequences, but it's Olmstead who singularly steals the show here, such a cutey, as her virtue is put to the test by Winthrop. Both flicks looks stellar with handsome restorations that are quite stunning for these nearly century old films, the latter shows some scratches and both of brief moments of wonky contrast but otherwise these look marvelous. The Boob is a silent film, but we do get a fun piano score by Arthur Barrow that was added to the film in 2003, and Why Be Good? which is a sound-comedy features the original Vitaphone soundtrack with musical score,  sound effects and synchronized singing, though no other audible dialogue. The Vitaphone soundtrack is nicely restored but does have a light layer of hiss, but never rising to the level of distraction.  No extras for this silent-era double-feature but seeing these nearly 100 year-old comedies get loving restorations is treat enough for me.

Director: Brett Ratner
Cast: Chris Tucker, Charlie Sheen, Heather Locklear, Gerard Ismael, Paul Sorvino
I am used to Warner Archive unearthing flicks from the 30's through the 6o's that are new to me, but it's pretty rare that I see them bring a 90's flick to Blu-ray that I have never heard of previously, as is the case with this Bret Ratner (Rush Hour) directed action-comedy starring Chris Tucker (The Fifth Element) as Franklin Hatchett, a fast-talking small time car wash hustler in L.A. who gets busted after the meddling of tabloid TV reporter James Russell (Charlie Sheen, The Boys Next Door). On a prison bound bus Franklin is seated next to French criminal Raymond Villard (Gerard Ismael, The Last Romantic Lover) when his crew attack the transport, in the bloody aftermath Franklin is wrongfully accused of killing cops, he manages to escape with his life but seeks out the help of news reporter Russell, and both end up wrongfully accused and on the run from the law and Villard and his henchmen. If you're a fan of Rush Hour this certainly falls into that sweet spot of urban action-comedy, we have a straight man, the annoying antics of Tucker, and plenty of L.A. scenery. There's also a stellar cast here, we have both Paul Gleason (Sixteen Candles) and Daniel Roebuck (Dudes) as detectives, Heather Locklear (The Return of Swamp Thing)  as James fiancé, Elise Neal (Mission To Mars) as Paula Franklin's pregger girlfriends, plus Paul Sorvino (The Stuff) and Veronica Cartwright (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) as James's soon to be in-laws. Super breezy, action-packed and slickly made, this was a fun 90's action-comedy that delivered everything I expected, car chases, shoot outs, explosions galore, and snappy banter between the leads. The new scan looks terrific with excellent depth and clarity, color reproduction pleases with lots of punchy highlights, and the uncompressed audio is solid. The only extras is a Trailer, which is a bummer, but otherwise a top-notch A/V presentation for an underserved flick.

Preston fraudster behind £97m designer goods racket splashed £4m on mansion in Harry Styles' neighbourhood
Tumblr media
A Preston man convicted for a £97m fraud could lose the £4m London house he bought using his ill-gotten gains.
Arif Patel used his dodgy Preston-based Faisaltex Ltd to buy a five-storey terrace in a Hampstead estate where neighbours include Harry Styles, Ricky Gervais and Benedict Cumberbatch. Patel was dubbed one of Britain's biggest ever tax cheats as he was jailed over a scheme which involved importing and selling knock-off designer goods.
His gang made millions more from false VAT claims by faking exports of clothes and mobile phones – ploughing it into UK property. Records show Patel’s company bought the freehold of the Hampstead property, which has a blue plaque celebrating former resident Edwardian portrait painter Sir William Nicholson and is on one of North London’s poshest streets.
According to HMRC, Faisaltex Ltd was "the heart of his criminal empire" and provided the base for the counterfeit clothing operation and false export business.” So far, twenty-four associates have already been jailed for 116 years. Last week, Patel and Mohamed Jaffar Ali, 58, were found guilty of fraud and money laundering at Chester crown court.
The pair are both on the run and failed to show in court. Patel, said to have fled to Dubai, was convicted in his absence. A warrant is out for Jaffar Ali’s arrest.
Now, prosecutors want to confiscate it after Patel’s conviction on Tuesday for a £97million fraud. HMRC’s Richard Las said: “Patel lived a lavish lifestyle at the expense of the law-abiding majority.
“Fraudsters like this pair steal money that funds the NHS and other services. We have £78million of the gang’s UK assets restrained and have begun the process to recover all proceeds of crime.”

Thomas Hughes, 97, Dies; Government Insider and Vietnam War Skeptic
Tumblr media
In 1947, Mr. Hughes moved on from Carleton School with a degree in government relations. He then ventured out to Oxford College, where he spent the following two years as a Rhodes researcher. He remained politically dynamic: Among different undertakings, he went on the BBC in 1948 to safeguard President Harry Truman, and, that very year, he burned through about a month and a half in Italy working for liberal political missions in a political race that took steps to see Socialists take power. In the wake of getting back to the US and moving on from Yale Graduate school in 1952, he burned through two years in the Air Power as a legal counselor. He wedded Jean Reiman in 1955; she passed on in 1993. Alongside his subsequent spouse, whom he wedded in 1995, he is made due by his children, Thomas and Allan, and his sister, Marianne Hughes Nordholm. Mr. Hughes spent the remainder of the 1950s flipping between top positions with Humphrey and Chester Bowles, who had been legislative leader of Connecticut and, in 1958, won political race to Congress. Bowles, who had likewise filled in as envoy to India, was a nearby consultant to John F. Kennedy's 1960 official mission, and when he became representative secretary of state in 1961, he brought Mr. Hughes with him. He was well known enough among the Washington foundation that, in 1969, the approaching secretary of state, William Rogers, demanded he stay set up at INR. Over the complaints of President Richard M. Nixon, Mr. Rogers then, at that point, advanced Mr. Hughes to be second-in-order at the American consulate in London. He left government in 1970 and stayed away forever, regardless of periodic pleas — President Jimmy Carter two times requested that he run the C.I.A. However he was too associated as anybody on the Georgetown mixed drink party circuit, he liked to stay under the radar in the background. "The people who discuss power are the people who need it themselves," he told The New York Times in 1981. "Power ruins, and absence of force debases totally." Read the full article

Richard Allen Harris went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, January 14, 2022, after serving as a pastor and teacher to hundreds for over 60 years. He was known for his love of the Scriptures, his love for his people, and his desire to share the love of Christ and the gospel message with others. He is remembered as a great Bible teacher, a leader in the state of Pennsylvania and in the nation for promoting Christian Education and the preservation of the founding principles upon which the United States was founded.
He was born in Doylestown, PA, to Olin and Flora Harris, the seventh child out of eight. After graduating from Central Bucks High School, Doylestown, PA, he married his sweetheart Erla Pauline (Duckworth) Harris. They were married 68 years. The Harrises had six children: Barbara Ann (Harris) Peev, Richard Dwight Harris (deceased), Dr. Allen Gene Harris, Melvin Paul Harris, Cynthia Pauline (Harris) VanOsten and Rebecca Faye (Harris) Frederick.
He attended Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC, graduating in 1959. He then attended 'Faith Theological Seminary' in pursuit of his Masters degree. While pursuing his Masters, he accepted an interim position at a 'One-room school house' where the First Baptist Church of Perkasie was holding a Sunday School ministry in Rockhill Township, Sellersville, PA. From the Sunday School, Dr. Harris and several families started an independent Baptist Church. The church, Bethel Baptist Church, was constituted on October 31, 1962, with 14 families. Ultimately, Bethel would have a membership of over 1,000.
In 1967, convicted about the need for Christian, Bible-based education for children, Dr. Harris led Bethel to start Upper Bucks Christian School. From the one-room schoolhouse, which still stands today, Bethel's campus now covers over 22 acres in Sellersville, PA. Hundreds have graduated from Upper Bucks and are serving in a myriad of ministries and vocations around the world. Dr. Harris co-founded KCEA (Keystone Christian Education Association) to support Christian Schools across the state of Pennsylvania. He also co-founded the Independent Baptist Fellowship of North America (IBFNA), served on the Council of ten for the Pennsylvania Association of Regular Baptist Churches, (PARBC) was a leader in the American Association of Christian Schools, was a director in the American Council of Christian Churches (AACS), and directed the Grace Independent Baptist Mission, (GIBM), with missionaries in over 20 countries. Dr. Harris was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Hyles-Anderson College, Crown Point, Indiana. He also received the "Defense of the Scriptures" Memorial Award from Bob Jones University and the "Faithful Servant Award" from the Pennsylvania Association of Regular Baptist Churches. In 2000, he retired from Bethel Baptist Church. Since then, he helped four other churches; Bible Baptist Church of West Chester, PA; Kendall Park Baptist of Kendall Park NJ; First Baptist Church of Oxford PA; Shickshinny Baptist Church of Shickshinny, PA; and Dr. Harris recently helped constitute "Bible Baptist Church of Quakertown," PA.

Little Women Hogwarts Houses
Sorting the characters from Little Women into their Hogwarts Houses. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long while now, but I had to really think hard about each of the characters and where they may belong.
Meg- Ravenclaw. Wisdom and intelligence, probably stereotypical to pin this house on the oldest, but it certainly fits Meg well. She is often giving advice to her sisters and is a governess, so we know she is a smart woman to be teaching others. And just like Ravenclaws, she can also appear to be a bit standoffish and is a perfectionist. Think back to the scene in the novel when she fails to properly make jelly leading her to have a breakdown, is something that would ring very true to any Ravenclaw. Motherhood helps her to hone in her wiser side and teaches her how to accept failings, which makes her more insightful. How like a Ravenclaw.
Jo- Gryffindor. Well known for being courageous and daring, as out of all the March sisters, she is the most outgoing of them all. But at their worst, they can be stubborn and hot headed, which is something Jo had to deal with, and just like Harry Potter, she is controlled by her emotions and is short tempered, which has led her into trouble. Her moral compass is very strong which is why she refuses two different publishers who wanted her to write stories that were neither what her beliefs were even though it could have given her money. Daring, nerve and chivalry truly sets her apart and lands her in Gryffindor.
Beth- Hufflepuff. The house of patience and kindness, something that Beth often exhibits throughout the story, as well as loyalty. At her worst, like other Hufflepuffs, they can tend to be pushovers, allowing themselves to be walked over and sometimes afraid to voice their opinions, as well as low self-esteem, as she is the one sister out of them all to have the lowest opinion of herself. But above all, she is loyal, loyal to her family and friends, as we know from her interactions with the Hummel’s, despite others passing over them. Like the badger, she is content to be live a quiet life in their home surrounded by her loved ones.
Amy- Slytherin. No, I do not give this to her simply because it’s what’s left or because she is a bad person (which she is not at all). Slytherins are known for being ambitious and desire for greatness, but they are also intelligent and natural leaders, and as we see Amy grow up, she possesses these qualities. The negative traits associated with the house is a tendency to be a little selfish and smug, which young Amy was, but she is a resourceful woman, who can manage to make a disaster into a success, as it was with the Chester Fair and when she decides her art skills would be helpful to teach others. Amy would have been the one to march up to Voldemort to give him a lecture so good it would make him change his ways.
Marmee- Gryffindor. Like mother like daughter, Marmee has a strong moral compass and is unafraid to take the lead when her husband is away for the war and do what must be done. Helping out in the hospital at home and leaving to go take care of husband and daughter when the time comes, she does right thing, even if it isn’t popular to the rest of society. As we know from the novel, Jo gets her short temper from her mother, but Marmee was able to hone it in and not allow her to be as reckless as most Gryffindors can get, but she fully is aware that it is a flaw she has. Marmee is a lioness through and through.
Mr. March- Ravenclaw. He may not be in the story much, but when he is, his wisdom and curiosity helps to push the girls to explore themselves and see the world differently than they usually would. His biggest flaw is isolation or a disconnection to the world, which could range from being lost in his own thoughts to feeling as if he cannot understand the world around them, which is something Mr. March has felt after coming home from the war. Much like his real life counterpart (who was part of the Transcendentalism movement), he often thinks outside of the box, putting forth his individuality and sticking with it, much like Luna Lovegood.
Laurie- Slytherin. It was tough, going between Gryffindor and Slytherin (not surprising seeing how similar they are to each other), but I have to sort him in Slytherin. Just like Amy, he desires greatness and is ambitious, but he also is incredibly cunning and mischievous, as we know from him cat-fishing Meg and John. He also has a tendency to be arrogant and selfish, as seen from his time in Europe after Jo turns him down, and unable to see that Jo does not love him simply because it’s what he wants. But like some underrated Slytherins, he is not bad at heart, just has trouble at times of putting other before him, but when he does, you know it’s serious.
John- Gryffindor. If Jo is to the overt Harry, then John is to the subtle Neville. Chivalry and a strong moral compass are the traits that ring true to John, often doing what is responsible and right rather than refusing to answer the call, just as he signed up to fight in the war as soon as he was not needed to tutor Laurie. While he may not have the same hotheadedness that Jo possesses, he does have a small streak of recklessness, as he goes into war thinking that no one would care if he lives or dies, invites a friend and carelessly laughs off Meg’s failed jelly not realizing how upset she is until too late. Overall, he embodies the best qualities of being a Gryffindor and deserves to belong to the house of the lion.
Friedrich- Hufflepuff. Hardworking and fair, he is a true Hufflepuff through and through. He spent his life being a hardworking, but poor, professor, who’s unafraid to work hard and be a tutor to others despite him having a degree worthy of a university, which can also show is more humble side. Like Beth, he isn’t one to always speak out his opinions, unless it is absolutely necessary, but it’s because of this flaw, he nearly loses his chance of love, which also leads to his low self-esteem, thinking that Jo deserves someone “better”. The underdog of the whole novel, but is easily the most steadfast and loyal character of them all who deserves to be appreciated more, much like the house he is sorted into.

Note
If Harry remarries will he still be Duke of Sussex or will he be granted new Dukedom like how Charles became Duke of Cornwall after married to Camilla? If FD becomes another Duchess of sussex, but Meghan will still be DOS even after she divorced Harry. I hope he gets new dukedom while sussex become his secondary title. I feel like sussex has become such a curse to Harry.
AFAIK,
Prince Charles has always been the Duke of Cornwall. When he became the Prince of Wales, he got all these titles in one go: Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Chester, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland. They are all given to the Prince of Wales when he becomes the Prince of Wales - a package deal
Charles uses the title of the Prince of Wales as that is his highest rank. His wife should hold the equivalent title for a female, i.e. the Princess of Wales. However, when Charles married Camilla, the title of the Princess of Wales was so strongly associated with Diana that they decided that Camilla would use the female version of Charles’s next highest title, the Duke of Cornwall, and so Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall.
Harry has been created the Duke of Sussex and will remain the Duke of Sussex all his life, unless he is stripped of that title by either HM the Queen and/or Parliament (I forget who exactly is involved). This means that when he divorces, Meghan will become Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and if he remarries, his new wife will become The Duchess of Sussex. It is why the ‘the’ in titles is so important. If the three of them were introduced together I think it would go “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’. She ranks behind his new wife and loses the HRH but keeps the Duchess of Sussex title in a different form.
It is possible that HM the Queen will give Harry a new dukedom if he marries, but I don’t know whether a new one would take priority over the Sussex title. Far better to keep it and redeem it by his actions, in my opinion, unless the people of Sussex think otherwise (and I believe they are calling for Harry and Meghan to lose the title).
@helenaaurellia is the expert on these issues, so I will send out a call for her help. British citizens are also welcome to answer as they probably know more than I do about it.

Top Recommendations for a Young Inventor
Tumblr media
If you are a birthed inventor-- if you feel it deep down within you-- you already recognize that inventing is very easy. But following through with the actions that are important to transform your invention into something that strangers will want, as well as pay money for, is not so simple.
If you don't intend to go on to the following steps or can not because you do not have the resources, that's unfortunate. If you decide to go ahead with any of your inventions-- might be applying for a patent, making a functioning model, and then getting in touch with the business that may be curious about buying or accrediting your license-- you'll require determination and resources. If you decide to create and also market your invention, chances are that you'll need a lot more cash than you would certainly if you were to certify. You can also check https://usa.inquirer.net/56347/everything-you-need-to-know-to-be-a-successful-inventor
So much for basic guidance. Now I'll give you some detailed policies to assist you to do well.
1. Maintain an inventor's notebook.
This serves whether you can immediately pay for towage your full invention plan or not. In your note pad, you can compose descriptions of your inventions as well as draw sketches of them. Someday, possibly after you graduate from college, you can reflect on the many access in your notebook and realize that your study work with very early inventions has enabled you to acquire understanding and practices that might quickly pay off.
Possibly you have seen pictures of Leonardo Da Vinci's note pads; he was the genius that developed the helicopter 450 years before the first effective helicopter flew. But the point is that severe inventors keep a document of what they have invented, even if they never deal with it additionally.
And also perhaps you'll fix the problem in a desire; it's not unusual for inventors to invent that means. In any situation, many inventors and also authors had fantastic concepts that they were certain they would not neglect, as well as think what?
An essential associated rule to your inventor's note pad is to always lug a pencil or pen and paper in your pocket, or some kind of digital form to tape notes. You don't have to resemble a nerd unless you like the image. You'll be surprised by just how commonly you'll wish to tape-record e-dresses as well as a telephone number in addition to notes about inventions, or issues that need inventions.
2. Read about famous inventors.
You might discover that you are a whole lot like Nikola Tesla. He has just recently become a lot more preferred because an automobile is called after him. When I was a child, a couple of individuals had ever before heard of him.
As a man, he was the major inventor of Air Conditioning (alternating existing), transformers that enable the transmission of electrical energy for hundreds of miles, and also the alternating existing motor that powers our factories and also our residence devices. Edison fixed the troubles that had protected against others from earning the title and became recognized as the primary inventor.
Among one of the most remarkable stories of the invention is that of the radio and trendsetters like Tesla, Guglielmo Marconi, Lee de Forest, Edwin Armstrong, and Reginald Fessenden. Never heard of Fessenden? If it weren't for this Canadian's invention of amplitude inflection (AM), early audiences would certainly have listened to only dots as well as dashboards instead of songs. These others produced a drama much better than Harry Potter, including feuds as well as even self-destruction. "Empire of the Air: The Men Who Made Radio," by Tom Lewis is an outstanding publication that I very recommend. You can buy a made use of duplicate on Amazon.com for $1.99 plus shipping.
By reviewing exactly how important inventions were created, you will certainly be better able to overcome your frustrations and also really feel more certain about eventual success.
3. Maintain your inventions simple till you have the ways-- particularly the cash-- to work on complex inventions.
There is nothing as inhibiting as running out of cash after having worked extremely hard on a complicated invention.
Mark Twain dealt with an inventor of the automatic typesetting equipment. The maker was very made complex. It attempted to accomplish what human typesetters did by selecting the metal kind, letter by letter, from a shelf and assembling it into words and also paragraphs for publishing the papers and also books of the 1800s and in the past.
Ottmar Mergenthaler, the effective inventor of the Linotype maker, beat Twain's equipment to the market. The race was neck to neck, the machine that Twain was financing kept on requiring "simply one more renovation," and it would certainly function. Or so the inventor and Twain always assumed.
Chester Carlson, the inventor of the Xerox process that is the basis for our copiers as well as printer today, showed the Xerox procedure in 1938. But the first sensible completely dry photocopier, the Xerox maker, didn't make it to the market until 21 years later. The intricacy and secret of the process hampered economic investment, understanding, and also significant acceptance of his invention. Motto: Keep it straightforward. Find out more help https://azbigmedia.com/business/want-to-be-a-successful-inventor-use-these-ideas-to-help/
4. Research study the marketplace before spending emotional energy and also time on what you think is novel. It most likely isn't.
I do not imply to sound adverse or frustrating, yet almost all of what we (I include myself in the "we") invent is a variant of something that has currently been done. The truest novelty today comes from very modern explorations, such as the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) equipment, or TV, computer system, tablet screens, and so on
. I don't indicate to indicate that there are no possibilities left. Successful wonderful inventions disrupt the old way of doing things, as well as the disturbance, produces small, practical chances for inventors.
Kitchen area gadgets, tools, garden carries out, and also much more are areas that still use possibilities for inventions. Several inventors believe they have an original idea because they don't see their invention being sold in shops.
If you invent something that is a brand-new variation on an old-style and rush to a licensed lawyer, you'll pay a great deal of money for a patentability viewpoint that will encourage versus submitting a license application. It is unlikely that your version of the invention is unique.
Constantly, always, constantly, begin with a market search.
Remarkably, if there are no competitors whatsoever, this might be virtually as poor as severe competitors. If nobody has ever before thought of your sort of invention-- not always your specific attributes and layout-- chances are that there is no market or a really small one. If you proceed, you will have to invent the marketplace as well as your invention. As well as you will be scratching an area that does not itch.
5. Find out how to do your preliminary patent search.
Do not submit a patent application without a professional search, however. Searching is even more of an art than it may appear. I'll e-mail you a duplicate of my guidelines on how to look if you call me at [email protected]. At the same time, have a look at google.com/patents.
6. Join an inventors club if you can find one near you, or begin one.
Your regional paper may run a free promotion article concerning your plan, as well as you'll be on your means. When in operation, ask a neighborhood license representative or patent lawyer to accompany you. You'll have sound expert guidance and a resource of even more members.
7. Nerve and also persistence are vital.
Many ideas do not pan out, so you need to keep browsing and examining. You need to kiss a lot of frogs before you discover your princess or royal prince.

V4VELINDRE IS OUT AND THE REVIEWS ARE IN!
Tumblr media
V4Velindre was released on the 1st of October to rave reviews and excellent sales, with the album raising £1,147 for Velindre Cancer Centre on its very first day. A large part of the album’s success must surely be down to the support of music critics, national and local radio stations all across the UK, and even into Europe, North America and South Africa. You can add to that sum by downloading the album from  https://v4velindre.bandcamp.com/releases
Here are some of the albums key supporters -
John Harris
John Rhys Harris (born 1969) is a British journalist, writer and critic. He is the author of The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock (2003); So Now Who Do We Vote For?, which examined the 2005 UK general election; a 2006 behind-the-scenes look at the production of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon; and Hail! Hail! Rock'n'Roll (2009). His articles have appeared in Select, Q, Mojo, Shindig!, Rolling Stone, Classic Rock, The Independent, the New Statesman, The Times and The Guardian.
John was been incredibly engaged with V4Velindre, calling it a ’brilliant and lovingly compiled album’ and then consistently tweeting and retweeting on its behalf. He has also secured an article on the album in a forthcoming issue of https://thenewcue.substack.com/about.
Adam Walton https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0079gnt
The Adam Walton Show is broadcast on Saturday nights, and you can hear the likes of Sun Ra, Fairport Convention, Big Black, War and Westlife, all rubbing shoulders with the finest new Welsh musical talent.
Adam's the resident DJ and occasional promoter at Telford's Warehouse in Chester and he enjoys computer programming when he's not mowing down legions of newbies during an online Quake III frag-fest.
Perhaps it is these 'geek-oid' tendencies that drew him inexorably to presenting Radio Wales' science and technology show Science Cafe.
Adam is the author of On Making Music, a guide for bands and artistes on how to make music and how get it out into the public domain, and also produces The Janice Long Show for BBC Radio Wales.
Adam was playing music from V4Velindre as early as the 18th of September and has continued to support the album on and off air. Last Saturday, he played three tracks and talked about the fundraising nature of the album. He has called V4Velindre ‘a great album’.
John Kennedy  https://www.radiox.co.uk/radio/shows-presenters/xposure/
John Kennedy is a British DJ and radio presenter and podcast host, best known for his longstanding role as the host of the music show X-Posure on Radio X and for the music podcast Tape Notes. X-Posure is currently broadcast on Friday and Saturday nights from 11pm to 2am. The show introduces music from up-and-coming artists primarily, although not exclusively, from alternative and indie styles, and regularly includes live sessions and interviews. Over the years the show has featured a huge range of artists and Kennedy has been credited with discovering countless musicians who have gone on to find success, including the likes of Adele, The xx, Razorlight, Kate Nash, The Ting Tings, The Futureheads, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip and Mumford & Sons. The Independent described the show as one of the "most eclectic...on British radio".
John has featured V4Velindre on his renowned show X-Posure on a number of occasions - last Saturday’s show featured a triple header of tracks and a lengthy chat about the fundraising aspect of the album - he even spelt out the name for those considering downloading it. There was a significant uptake on Sunday morning, which I 100% put down to John and Adam playing tracks the night before. John has called V4Velindre ‘an amazing overview of various musical styles’.
Dr Art Jipson
I was fortunate to be interviewed by Dr Jipson for the popular music course he teaches at the University of Dayton, Ohio, a couple of years back.  Although an Associate Professor in Sociology, Dr Jipson is also the host of the Tuesday Afternoon Alternative broadcasting at https://udayton.edu/studev/leadership/involvement/student-life/org-radio.php
It is a show which Dr J is proud to say concentrates largely on the local music scene in Dayton, but which also takes the occasional detour, in the name of authentic music, further afield. Dr J played a fistful of tracks from V4Velindre, as well as talking at length about the fundraising aspect of the album. He also generously penned the piece below for his blog
https://yourtuesdayafternoonalternative.com/2021/10/05/v4velindre-a-collection-with-heart-and-purpose/
Pete Paphides
Pete Paphides started his career in music journalism at Melody Maker before going on to write for Time Out, the Guardian, Mojo, Q, Observer Music Monthly and The Times, where he spent five years as their Chief Music Critic. He has made several music documentaries for BBC Radio 4, including ‘Lost Albums’, ‘Follow-Up Albums’ and the New York Radio Festival Gold Award-winning ‘The Songs of Molly Drake’. Over the years, he has been a regular contributor to BBC Four music documentaries and he also made two series of Vinyl Revival for BBC 6 Music. Since 2015, he has hosted a weekly music show for Soho Radio and in 2020, Quercus published his first book, a memoir about childhood and music entitled ‘Broken Greek’. The book has been warmly received and was featured as BBC Radio 4’s Book Of The Week in May. ‘Broken Greek’ has since been optioned by Andrew Eaton (The Crown, 24-Hour Party People) for a television series.
Pete has described the album as ‘A magnificent anthology’ and has tweeted and retweeted his opinion that people should buy it. The fact that I have been able lead tweets and press releases with quotes from Adam, John Harris, John Kennedy and Pete has made a massive difference as to how the album has been received.
There have been radio stations from all over playing the album. Starting locally: https://www.gtfm.co.uk/ interviewd me in the run up to the 1st of October and played songs on the day, while others to have played tracks are Montreal’s
