What is this tournament?

This tournament is to determine which woman in the CW's Supernatural (2005-2020) best performed the role of "hag", as defined below with the help of Urban Dictionary and Glee (2009-2015):

Why isn't (x) here?

I have chosen these characters because they have fulfilled three categories: She is a) a Supernatural character, she is b) a woman, and she c) has attempted to hit on/get with an arguably gay guy.

But then, why is Dagon here?

Dagon fulfills a subset of hag: the reverse-hag, who attempts to get with a straight woman rather than a gay man. I feel her relationship to Kelly fulfills this unique niche. I will not be arguing about it. Argue with your vote!

Isn't hag an offensive term?

The writers call women much worse within the the show. This is a celebration of these characters as well as the act of hagging itself. We ❤️ hags here.

The History of Zoinks (Essay)

Includes an etymological and cultural analysis of the usage of "jeepers," "jinkies," and "zoinks." Another post will include the follow-up study.

If you grew up watching Scooby-Doo, it may be easy to assume that groovy green tees, ascots, and vans painted with flowers were all standard 60s fare. However, recall that these teens were not written by teens; when the first episode aired, character designer Iwao Takamoto was 41, main writer Bill Lutz was 47, and creators Joe Ruby and Ken Spears were 36 and 31, respectively. Were they already out of touch? As put by Paul Dini, writer on Scooby-Doo! Abracadabra-Doo: “When you look at those characters, they are characters frozen in time. They’re not really what hippies or hipsters or cool kids were like. They’re what 50-year olds thought cool kids were like” (“Scooby Doo! The Whole World Loves You”).

The most iconic quantifiers of how close these characters were to the “cool kids” is their catchphrases: “jeepers,” “jinkies,” and “zoinks!” When we hear the cartoon’s catchphrases, which claim to characterize this era, we must ask: Did people really say these things? Even though these terms are almost exclusively associated with the franchise today, these words were not born for marketing. The writers were pulling from memories, trends, and histories which, if we trace backwards, may glean some evidence as to their cultural accuracy.

Daphne’s classic “jeepers” is said to have been first penned in 1928 by cartoonist Billy DeBeck, whose popular Barney Google strips coined similar terms as “heebie-jeebies” and “holy moly” (Chakraborty and Dosad 117). The true origin of the word is likely several decades earlier, as Google’s catchphrase “Horsefeathers!” was already coming out of fashion among the construction workers that used it when DeBeck revived it in his parody of Appalachian colloquialisms (Funk and Funk ix-x). At the time DeBeck picked up “jeepers,” it was used as a euphemism for “Jesus!” (Harper, “Etymology of jeepers”).

However, the Scooby-Doo writers were more likely to be familiar with Al Donahue’s song “Jeepers Creepers” (as in, “Jeepers creepers, where’d you get those peepers?”). The song jumped high enough in America’s popular music charts in 1939 that it was covered by Louis Armstrong, Larry Clinton, and later Frank Sinatra (Whitburn 533). As an alteration of “Jesus Christ,” the flexible phrase was perfect for bouncy love ballads (“Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!”) and as a horror movie motif in Jeepers Creepers. The fact that the film was released in 2001 speaks to the staying power of “jeepers.”

As for Velma’s catchphrase, “jinkies,” it may be a variation of a number of old Scots terms dating around the 18th-19th century, so you may as well pick your favorite: a synonym for “jauntily” (as “jink,” to dodge or flee; nowadays “to juke” may be applicable), a nonsense word in nursery rhymes (e.g., “Eetum, peetum, penny pie / Cock a lory, jinky jye”), or a child’s nightgown (Dictionary of the Scots Language); a type of knitted fingerless glove (see Kate Davies Designs); or yet, as a derivation of “high jinks,” a drinking game that dates back to at least the 17th century (Harper, “Etymology of jinkies”).

The term was first recorded as exclamation “By jinkies!” in the newspaper strip “Ella Cinders” in 1936. The first recorded use of the term by a human (assuming comic characters can’t mail in letters to the local paper) was in a 1938 edition of the Northern-Courier in the sports section. Ray writes: “By jinkies, on my next pass day I will surely stop and see that 178 foot wheelbase, fire truck. If I can’t make it in one day maybe I can get an extension. Some truck.” (How many feet is the Mystery Machine’s wheelbase, I wonder���?) Again, “jinkies” is preceded by “by,” which Velma, as we all know, would choose to omit. By Scooby’s birthday, the term was popular among college students and “overly earnest” speakers (Iseli), fitting for the youngest of the gang who is always piping up with a clue to prove her intellectual merit.

Unlike “jeepers” and “jinkies,” which have decent pedigrees preceding Scooby-Doo, neither “zoinks” nor “zoink” directly appear in any written work before 1969, although they have a number of distant cousins. The closest approximation comes from television: a famous bit in 1958’s “Robin Hood Daffy” where Daffy swings from tree to tree, calling, “Zoiks, and away!” with each jump, only to crash face-first into a tree every time. His iconic lisp makes it difficult to parse whether he’s saying “zoiks” or “yoiks.” The latter would seem more likely, as “yoiks” and its sister “hoiks” have a long history as hunting words. On a bright and early morning in 1843, Sir Godfrey calls for his friend to hurry and saddle up: “Hoik, 'squire! . . . hoik, hoik! High wind him! Drag on him, yoiks, tally-ho!" (Mills 125). On the tail of a fox chase in 1774, a hunter in pursuit exclaims, “Yoiks, hark forward!” (Kelly 6). Contextually, neither sound too far from the modernized “Zoinks, let’s scram, Scoob!” The first “zoiks” was penned around 1584, in a sonnet of all things: “With mightie maters mynd I not to mell, / As copping Courts, or Comonwelthis, or Kings / Quhais craig zoiks fastest, let tham sey thame sell; / My thoght culd nevir think vpon sik things” (Montgomery 1–4). I can’t claim a clue about what the rest means, but “zoiks fastest” leads me to think this is a “jink”/”juke” situation; in “zoiking”, the narrator is fleeing from the cowersome courts, commonwealths, and kings. Coincidentally, “mynd I not to mell” sounds almost adjacent to “meddle,” another word popularized by Scooby-Doo. All of the “zoinks” family are employed as interjections preceding movement.*

In sum, while “jinkies” appears to have had some relevance at the time of Scooby-Doo’s inception, “jeepers” is a bit dated in comparison, and “zoinks” has a vast etymological tree but no direct precursors. The advantage to having a cast of characters who are, in the words of Paul Dini, “frozen in time,” is that they are living time capsules. We can choose any point within 50 years and see unique perceptions of culture, politics, music, style, and our focus: vocabulary. But how well do these perceptions line up with reality?

*All, that is, except one. “Yoiks” may also be used to refer to egg yolks, as in a cookbook from 1762: “Take a large Fowl, or a Pound of Veal, as much grated Bread, half a Pound of Sewet . . . Mace, two Cloves, half a Nutmeg grated, about a large Tea Spoonful of Lemon-peel, and the Yoiks of two Eggs” (Glasse 38). Add an olive toothpick on top and you have a Shaggy sandwich!

Boo! You're the only contributor to the Harper x Staphanie tag. Thank you for doing such an amazing job. I sure hope something comes of that subtext. What's your hope/take?

Hah, yeah, thanks, there doesn't seem to be much activity, but I'm into them! I just love when characters get have their own defined arcs and development and there's actually time spent on them and their dynamic.

It definitely feels like real subtext to me, especially given that Harper is canon bi. And the scar and wound cleaning, I mean, that is very classically how media does sexual tension, so it's definitely something.

The only confusing part is that almost kiss Stephanie had with Turner the ep before. You know, at the very start of the show, when Turner and Stephanie were hanging out as best friends, it did feel like maybe that's the romance they were going to go with, but then Carrie showed up and that seemed much more the kind of romance set up a show like this would pull. But after the first couple of eps, they've spent less time together, so who knows.

It really has been a mix and match, and I didn't see it myself, but others have really been loving Turner with Duela. So it feels like Stephanie is hardly the only or inevitable love interest here, especially since from the promo, tonight seems great for the Turner/Duela crowd. To make things more complicated, Stephanie and Carrie also have both had moments with Brody, and honestly, Carrie and Duela's teamups have been super fun, although on the canon-wise probability scale, that is definitely on the low end. And to round things off, at the same time early on when Turner and Carrie were bonding, it kind of felt like Duela and Cullen had some nice moments.

So right now, it feels like we have Carrie/Brody, Turner/Duela, and Stephanie/Harper as the stronger ships, but that could change on a dime, one good ep/scene and a whole new ship could rise. It's also worth noting that Harper has only really had chemistry with Stephanie, though of course there is still Dylan (McKillen), but that door seems pretty shut. If the show wanted to do something same-sex, Harper and Stephanie are currently their best options, though they could decide they have enough queer rep, having her and Cullen on the show to begin with. :o

It's funny, SO often I'll watch something and be like, well, that's chemistry and I'm assuming intentional subtext, and with something like Jack and Keeley that paid off and with Birdie and Daphne it really didn't, lol. Hoping what we saw here isn't just in our minds. :P

Harper hated seeing her this way. So miserable and so tired of everything. He understood that she had recently gotten out of a relationship but that relationship wasn't even great in the first place. Her boyfriend nate was abusive towards her and acted like a dick. He was toxic towards her and for that he hated Nate. He hated the way he treated her and wanted her to get out of that relationship as quickly as she could. Which was why when he learned that her relationship had ended he was rather glad and delighted about it. Even though he knew that the breakup was messy. He didn't particularly care about it. He was simply glad she was out of that relationship. But he knew she had been feeling down lately which was why he had made plans for them both to have fun together. Something that would take her mind of things. When he arrived at her place he was expecting her to have already been dressed and ready. The last thing he would have expected was for her to be lying in bed languishing. He sighed softly at that sight before responding to her again. "I know and I am sorry about that. But you can't be languishing in bed all day either. You have to get out of bed sooner or later and do something fun. Which is why I am here for." He said to her with a charming smile. "Now then get up and be ready. " He said to her with a warm smile.

It had been about a month since her breakup with Nate, which had been a long time coming in the first place. He'd been a terrible boyfriend. He was selfish, and rude, and constantly made her feel insecure about the way she looked. He'd call her horrible names if she wore something he viewed as too revealing, but then get angry at her when she didn't want to have sex. Daphne had finally ended things with him after lots of encouragement from her friends, but the damage had already been done. She was struggling to feel good in her own body. A repeat of the last thing he said to her on replay in her own head. Who'd wanna fuck you anyway, you fat ugly cow.

Daphne sat up as the door opened, pulling her legs up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. "Shit, Sorry...I completely forgot...I'm just having a bad day..."

How this will work

Once submissions are closed, the first round will commence, the family elimination round. I'll tag it #family elimination. Depending on the traction/interest this has received I'll either set the polls for a day or a week, and will be to eliminate family or closely connected characters from competing against each other. The only two families I know of currently in this round are the Blythes (Anne of Green Gables) and the Weasleys (Harry Potter). If you're submitting characters where there are multiple redheads in the family, please make a note of this in the submission. I may also eliminate multiples in the same fandom depending on how many submissions we have, also in this round. (e.g. there are two DC characters currently listed).

After that, I'll set up the brackets and whatnot and the ultimate redhead will, by process of elimination, be chosen!

After it's over, there will also be a redheaded OCs round (can be fandom OCs or from original stories). Feel free to submit your interest at any time and I'll keep the ask in my inbox until we get to handling the OC round with a proper template for information about them. The only child of the Parkinson family. Favorite class is History of Magic, mainly because it’s the best time to disseminate and receive information. She’s particularly knowledgeable on how to twist one’s words and how to use half-truths.

Daphne Elena Greengrass: ISFJ-A/Cancer/1991-1998/Pure-Blood

The eldest of the Greengrass family. Sixth-Year & Seventh-Year Prefect. Favorite class is Astronomy because there’s nothing more soothing than glancing at the night sky. She’s the second-in-command if Celaena is gone.

Astoria Evelyn Greengrass: ENFP-T/Gemini/1992-1999/Pure-Blood

The youngest in the Greengrass family. Fifth-Year Prefect. Favorite classes are also Astronomy and History of Magic. Magical law is her forte, giving the most help when Harry went on trial during the summer before his Fifth-Year.

Millicent Bulstrode: ISFP-T/Capricorn/1991-1998/Half-Blood

The only child of her family. Slytherin Beater (Third-Year to Sixth-Year). Favorite classes are Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. Her senses are highly attuned, often able to detect different materials (most notable, iron). 

Tracey Davis: ESTJ-A/Aries/1991-1998/Half-Blood

The younger sibling of the Davis family with her older brother in Ravenclaw. Slytherin Chaser (Second-Year to Sixth-Year). Favorite class is Ancient Runes because she enjoys different languages. She is the first student to pick up Parseltongue from Celaena and Harry, leading her to be in charge of several groups of Hogwart’s Army.

Harper Selwyn: INTP-A/Libra/1993-2000/Pure-Blood

The eldest sibling with one younger sibling (five years). Favorite class is Arithmancy and Alchemy, surprisingly enough. It was her who first figured out the Heir of Slytherin, due to the Selwyn family being close to the Slytherin line. 

Vaisley Shafiq: ESTJ-A/Aquarius/1992-1999/Pure-Blood

The middle child of the family with one sibling already graduated, and the other six years younger. Slytherin Chaser (Third-Year to Seventh-Year). Favorite class is Astronomy and Potions. She specialized in elemental magic, often able to predict the weather accurately.

@divinityburnt. she's heard the stories, talk in this town about the pikes and who they are to this little community. the father, a pastor, the daughter a prophet, it's something strange for a girl who's not sure she believes in god anymore - but she won't willingly admit that to anyone around here. heavens no, she doesn't need to be seen as a blasphemous outcast among the ranks of the holy and righteous in this town. when she came here, it was for solace. a place to hide amongst her inner most demons, wanting to work things out in her own time. her family abandoned her after the death of her older brother, a car accident claiming his life when she was just shy of eleven years old. from that point on, she learned to live with silence, despite how deafening it could be. slipping on a pair of tennis shoes, she reached up and grabbed her keys from the hook by the door and headed outside, cigarette pressed between two digits. she fumbled with the tobacco stick, nearly dropping it onto the pavement before scrambling to catch it. if anyone would have saw her - which, when she looked up, she caught the eyes of harper pike. sheepishly trying to play it cool, the brunette flashed her a smile before deciding a little detour on her way out wasn't a bad idea. if anything she could catch up a bit on the town gossip, hear what the preacher's daughter had in mind for doing today - see if it was worth her time to stick around. smoothing her hands down the front of her flannel, she dropped the half-crumpled cigarette onto the cement beneath her feet and scurried over across the street, where the girl was sitting drinking some sort of hot beverage. was it coffee? hot cocoa? she wasn't sure, but the idea of tiny marshmallows was something that she could certainly fuck with right about now. "heeeeeey, harper," she said, lifting up on her toes and smiling over at her friend, before sidling up into the little seat next to her. "think i can bum a cigarette? kinda...well you saw what happened to my last one," she said, a wrinkled nose to follow. when given one from the package, fresh and clean and without the impending possibility of being dragged through the muck, she slipped out the lighter from her jacket pocket and lifted it to her lips, setting it ablaze. the inhale of tobacco smoke into her lungs was a godsend at this point, nicotine having been just as much of a craving as early morning coffee. puffing on the cancer stick for a few moments, there had been a slightly awkward silence that settled between them, and she chose to break rank and speak out - if only to keep conversation going. So I was wondering. Given the pattern of the show, introducing actors/characters and kind of creating a mystery/arc, I can’t shake the feeling that the recent casting announcement about Francesca has more to do with our Kanthony than it may seem. Hear me out—the actress is committed to another show, I understand that, but if the role is a minor one anyway, why would that make a difference? I was reading an article where Johnny Bailey (superb actor by the way—just brilliant) says there will be some complications in store for Kate and Anthony as they are not simple people and he said though that Anthony is very devoted to her and they are definitely in love. So I don’t think the complications are going to be between the two of them. But in the Harpers Bazaar article he hinted that Kate, although she has had responsibility towards her own family, has no idea how that would work with the Bridgerton family. When breaking down the family members themselves, it seems that both Daphne and Eloise approve of and like her, Gregory and hyacinth would have gotten to know her, and Colin and Benedict seem quite cordial to her. And of course Violet is the one who encouraged Anthony not to let her go in the first place. So the missing family member that we don’t know, the X factor that maybe hasn’t interacted w Kate is actually Francesca. So my question is, you think there is a potential for conflict between Kate and Francesca? Something to create a little angst or something to shake things up as Kate tries to take her role as Viscountess? I know I sound like a Sherlock Holmes or Game of Clue haha

It's possible. However I think it's more probable to me that the conflict (or at least a little bit of conflict) is going to be between Kate and Violet. Ironically, even if I think that Edwina wouldn't have made the perfect Viscountess Bridgerton, she was young, naive and a lot more malleable than Kate and would have given Violet more time to adjust to her new role, while Kate has already experience on how to manage a family, since she took that role with the Sharmas after her father died, and will step in immediately.

Remember how we saw Daphne kinda clashing with the governess when she became the duchess? I think we're going to see something similar between Kate and Violet (of course in more depth), with Kate wanting to change some things here and there, while Violet would want a more traditional approach. We'll see.
