since a lot of padme's handmaidens are no longer working actors (or just randomly played by Sofia fucking Coppola an insane detail) I've been hcing more active actors in my head and honestly I think this lineup is pretty solid
obviously sabe remains Keira knightly. I need to see her in a queer role and book!sabe is a tragic lesbian icon 10/10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for eirtae who looks the least like padme i HC rose ayling-ellis as young eirtae and Marlee maitlin for when she's older. both are deaf actors so there's an opportunity for more representation there. however I am aware that ayling-ellis uses bsl while maitlin uses asl. I think in universe this could be portrayed as there being a difference between sign language on naboo and coruscant and it's a good opportunity to inform viewers that not all sign languages are the same
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sache (who was played by Sofia Coppola goddamn) is described in the books as having been left the most hurt/scarred from the battle of naboo so I'd also go with a disabled actor for her. personally I think Kiera Allen for young sache and Ruth madeley for older sache
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the og movies rabe was portrayed by a Brazilian actress so I think it's right to keep her a woman of colour. I think Madeleine madden would be great for that role not least cos in the deleted attack of the clones scenes all padme's family have Australian accents so it's probably safe to say the nabooian accent sounds more Australian than the coruscanti accent which probably sounds a lot closer to Nat portman's new York accent
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ek Johnston who wrote the queen's trilogy about padme said she considered making verse trans which I think is a great idea even if she didn't end up including it in the books. therefore I think hari nef of and just like that and Barbie fame would suit the role well, especially cos she's also Jewish like nat portman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't really have opinions on the other handmaidens cos I haven't even finished the book yet but I think they're a really good vehicle to add more diversity into the series and metaphorically they work well for feminist discussions of star wars as you can play with the theme that all these women who may look quite similar actually have strikingly different experiences

Saw Barbie, loved it.
Thoughts under the cut;
I usually don't enjoy movies that are so...surreal?Avant-garde? Expressionist? Idk, weird and detached in a deliberate way, anything where the premise hinges on "don't think about the physics of it too hard", but it worked for what it was, and the existentialist vibes combined with the bright, plasticky, childish, consumerist, hollywood visuals was really interesting to me.
Yeah, the discussion of feminism vs patriarchy was a lil basic and with clunky dialogue but like...it's Barbie. Not Leslie Feinberg in conversation with Audre Lorde. Not sure what people expected. And in a way I think it's important that people do have access to media that's a little oversimplified because I think it nudges them towards the more complicated, nuanced, intersectional stuff. Maybe that's daft, but it's my thought for now.
Everybody in this movie was perfectly cast.
"SUBLIME!" made me laugh til I cried.
Barbie not being in love with Ken felt like a big deal to me on a personal level but I don't have the words rn to explain why and I'm sure other people have articulated it already.
I would absolutely not be surprised if Allan became the new nonbinary icon among young people.
There was something in Hari Nef being the Barbie that's like "oh no, I have glasses, what if other people don't think I'm pretty ...😒". that Barbie is sure of herself and having that role be played by a trans woman felt just wonderfull.
My only real complaint is that I felt they sort of "straightened out" some of the dolls. Kate McKinnon's Barbie makes a joke about finding Ryan Gosling's Ken hot. Magic Earring Ken appears but his necklace is a Barbie pendant, his iconic cock ring got taken away. Let these dolls with no genitalia be gay, goddammit!

Positives Review:
Margot Robbie is excellent as Barbie.
The script is funny and heartwarming.
The film is visually stunning.
The supporting cast is great.
Negatives Review:
The film is a bit too long.
Some of the jokes fall flat.
Overall:
Barbie is a fun and heartwarming film that gives a subversive take on the Barbie brand. The film is well-acted, well-written, and visually stunning. While it is a bit too long, it is still a worthwhile watch for fans of Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig, or simply good movies.

'With the release of the much-awaited Margot Robbie-starrer Barbie movie on 21 July, movie lovers will finally get to enjoy a good weekend. Other than Barbie, the Hollywood movie Oppenheimer is also set for release on Friday next week...
Barbeinheimer: Barbie vs Oppenheimer
As the two much-awaited movies of completely different genres are set to compete in the movie theatres on July 21, the internet is flooded with memes and jokes about the two movies. Both movies have a completely set fan base and are enjoying a lot of attraction due to their movie date clash.
Barbie
The movie is based on the famed Mattel doll which finds a special place in the childhood of all the children. The comedy movie stars Margot Robbie as a version of the title character known as Stereotypical Barbie. Later, the doll experiences a full-on existential crisis and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. The movie was directed by Greta Gerwig and was written by herself and fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach. The movie production was done by Robbie alongside LuckyChap's Tom Ackerley and Mattel's Robbie Brenner and David Heyman.
Other than Margot Robbie, the movie also casts Dua Lipa, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Ana Cruz Kayne, Sharon Rooney, and Ritu Arya.
Oppenheimer
Known for his iconic movies, this time Christopher Nolan has come with Oppenheimer. The movie will be released globally on July 21, 2023.
Christopher Nolan is known for giving more exciting and certified puzzlers. The movie is an adaptation of the 2005 book American Prometheus. It was authored by Kair Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The book revolves around the true incidents that occurred at the tail-end of World War 2.
The protagonist of the movie is a theoretical physicist who is widely credited with developing the first nuclear bomb or weapon. He was fondly known as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’.'
