The Ugly Duckling
Tumblr media
A/N: Okay...I saw GVF in concert because they’re one of my favorite bands and now I am completely enamored with them, particularly Joshua and Danny so here we are! First piece for Josh. As always let me know what you guys think and enjoy!
Word Count: 9.7k+
Warnings: Smut, 18+ content, DNI if you are under 18! Mentions of insecurities with appearance, teasing about looks, and past childhood issues regarding the warnings mentioned above.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You remember the story we read earlier in the school year, The Ugly Duckling? Don’t listen to anyone else, you need to stay true to you. You’ll find your own group and people one day and you’ll blossom into a beautiful girl, but in the meantime just keep your head up.”
You had vivid memories of your second grade teacher repeating those exact words to you. Recess had just started and after a morning of continuous teasing, your teacher pulled you aside as she saw tears forming in your young eyes.
The words she chose didn’t help, but only spurred on your emotions. You sat at the far corner of the playground, hiding from your classmates, fat tears rolling down your cheeks.
Your front two and bottom three teeth had all fallen out within the last few weeks, leaving your mouth a gaping hole. Originally over excited because it meant that your tooth fairy money had accumulated so quickly had been squashed as your classmates eyed you like some freak.
Bare feet appeared in your vision, shifting from the blacktop to the grass field you sat in. “Why’re you crying?” A loud voice asked the question and as you looked up a tanned, brown haired boy stood before you. When you didn’t answer he poked your shoulder.
“I like your overalls.” You mumbled a quiet thank you, sniffling as your tears subsided. “Where are your shoes?” You asked, staring at the boy's ginormous smile and eyes that peered down at you.
“Shoes are feet jail. The grass feels good on my toes,” he held his foot up, giving you a clear view of the sole, covered in complete filth. You made a face of disgust as he laughed whilst examining his own blackened foot.
He sighed, placing both his hands on his hips as his eyes scanned over you. “Why were you crying?” Your fist jabbed into your chin as you contemplated your response to him. “People were making fun of me because I lost a lot of my teeth. Mrs. Jones called me the ugly duckling,” you sniffled again as you replayed her words in your head.
The boy knelt down and caught your eyes. “Smile,” you hesitated, but he gave you the biggest smile he could manage, showcasing all of the teeth in his mouth and you couldn’t help but to laugh at how ridiculous he looked.
His eyes brightened at your sound and he saw the missing teeth. “That’s so cool, I bet you have so much tooth fairy money! Mrs. Jones is a mean old lady, she yells at me all the time and she’s not even my teacher. How much does the tooth fairy give you per tooth? I get $1 for each one, but I’ve heard some people get like $5 which I wonder why. Do they have bigger teeth and get more for it? Doesn’t make sense to me.”
You sat quietly listening to him ramble on with hardly any stops for breathing, not even getting a chance to answer his question. He did ask a question right?
“Come play with me and my brother,” he grabbed your hand in his and dragged you over to another boy who looked incredibly similar to the one who had you in his grasp. You stopped in front of him as the boy eyed you questiongly.
“Brother, this is my new best friend, Ducky. Welcome her,” he smiled at you as you gingerly waved. “I am Joshua, but I am Josh and this is my twin Jacob, but he is Jake.” Who you had just learned was Jake scoffed and rolled his eyes at his brother.
“She’s your best friend and didn’t know your name?” Josh’s slender arm wrapped around your shoulders, pulling you into his side. “That is none of your business,” he leaned towards you, whispering so only you could hear him.
“Jake’s dumb. Don’t listen to him. I’m older if you couldn’t tell,” your name tumbled from his quick words, shocking you.
“You know my name?” His smile grew at your words. “Course I do. What kind of best friend would I be if I didn’t know your name? Since we’re best friends though I’m going to call you Ducky because Mrs. Jones is dumb and doesn’t know what she’s talking about. We have to have nicknames.” He said it so matter of factly, your heart fluttered nervously.
You had never had a best friend before and now this goofy boy was yours. The bell rang loudly through the playground seconds after. Josh gathered his shoes in one hand, padding off to get in line as he nudged you.
“Wanna come to my house after school? We have a playground, an electric Jeep, scooters, roller skates-” Jake cut him off as he appeared at your other side. “Yeah, it’s a lot of fun, you should come.”
You softly nodded at the two, a tight lipped smile forming as they waved bye to you, saying they would see you after school when you heard Mrs. Jones yell across the blacktop.
“Joshua Kiszka, shoes on, now!”
After that day, you were inseparable. You tagged along with them everywhere they went, the two of them doing the same for you. As Sam grew older he joined your trio as did Daniel as he became incredibly close with the youngest Kiszka brother.
They became your protectors through the horror that was your school years. Your family simply called you a late bloomer, but it never took the sting away from the teasing you endured through the years.
At the eighth grade dance you had been having a blast with the twins and some other friends you had made, but as the disco ball spun on the ceiling, the lights dipped lower, and a slower song began to play, you found yourself slinking back away from the dance floor.
You watched as Jake shuffled around the floor with Tessa McKenna, the girl he had a massive crush on the entire year. Josh’s hands trembled on Lyssa Winslow’s waist, glancing around the gym, waiting for the dance to just be over. Lyssa and Tessa were in the popular circle, practically being ring leaders for the posse that followed them like lost puppies.
You would never tell Josh or Jake about the things the girls had said to you, knowing that they had harbored crushes on them for most of middle school, but these girls were not nice. Especially to you.
The corner of the room had pulled you into its embrace as you watched everyone dance together. Your heart hurt, a knot forming in your throat as tears welled in your eyes. No one had asked you to dance. You had worn your prettiest dress, your mom had helped you style your hair, even letting you put mascara and lipgloss on.
Yet it wasn’t enough. The darkness that enclosed around the space was a welcomed friend as you watched the clique of the eighth grade approach you as the song came to an end, the boys joining their friend group as you stayed hidden.
“Awe, no one ask you to dance? Poor baby. You didn’t think Josh or Jake would dance with you, right? They don’t like ugly girls which is probably why you haven’t even had your first kiss yet,” your bottom lip wobbled as Lyssa’s words washed over you. She was right of course. They would never go for a girl like you.
Your eyes fell down to your shoes as the girls snickered, but stopped quickly as someone spoke up. “Shut up, Lyssa. Ducky is ten times prettier and nicer than you are or will ever be. C’mon, let’s go dance,” Josh’s hand enclosed around yours pulling you from the group as they stood with their jaws hanging open at his harsh words.
You had never heard Josh speak like that to anyone before and it shocked you to hear how angry he had gotten.
He pulled you to a quiet corner, away from everyone else. The bass of another song jumped through the building. “How often does she say things like that to you?” You shrugged at his question, avoiding his stare. “Tell me or I’ll find out for myself.”
You sighed and rubbed at the bottom of your eye, not wanting to smear your makeup. “A lot.” Josh groaned and grabbed your arm. “Ducky, why would you not tell me? You can’t let people talk to you like that! If you won’t do anything about it, you come and get me or Jake and we’ll handle it. That’s my job, ducky!”
You could see the anger in his eyes as he yelled to be heard over the music. “I’m sorry. I knew you liked her and I didn’t want to ruin it,” you sniffled and met his look for the first time and he took a deep breath as he stepped towards you.
Without thinking anymore he quickly pushed his lips against yours for a split second. You barely registered what had happened before he pulled back, eyes wide and staring at you. “There. Now they can’t say you haven’t had your first kiss. I love this song, come on.”
As he took your forearm in his hand and dragged you behind him to rejoin his brother you couldn’t fight the grin that plastered itself on your face. You had just had your first kiss. With Josh. Your first kiss was Josh.
The rest of your night was wonderful and spent dancing and laughing with your best friends, not fully understanding the heat that nestled its way into your chest every time you looked at the dorky boy that had just saved you. Again.
High school's path continued the same. The boys blossomed as puberty hit them like trucks. Josh only had his remarkable features enhanced as he grew up. Jake and Sam appeared more like twins than the actual twins. You thought Danny had always been handsome and he only got better with age.
You however seemed to remain the same through the years. Your features hadn’t matured like you had hoped they would, but with college approaching and being able to escape the narrow minded people you had grown up with, it didn’t bother you as much as it used to.
Too many nights spent crying over aspects of yourself that you had no power to change had deeply rooted insecurity into you. The boys helped you with your confidence though. Just being around Josh was like being on the surface of the sun.
His pure energy made you always feel comfortable and like it was okay to be yourself with him because it was. The boys were your safe space and you wouldn’t have changed it for the world.
Graduation had come and gone and you sat on the back porch of the cabin your parents had rented for you, Josh, and Jake as a graduation present. Your usual group had come on a small camping trip, knowing this was going to be your last chance at a normal hang for awhile.
It was quiet in the house, everyone passed out from the exertion of the five mile hike you had all done earlier in the day to get to a secret swimming spot Sam had somehow heard about. You had agreed to the parents to keep an eye on the younger ones, placing full responsibility in your hands.
The crickets chirped loudly, an occasional firefly would illuminate the grass, a frog's croak tickling the calm air of the early summer night had you feeling at complete peace. The door creaked open as Josh appeared from the back door.
“Why’re you still up, ducky?” The nickname that you heard more than your own name had a sense of familiarity washing over you. “I don’t really want to sleep. I leave Monday and I don’t want this to change,” you offered him a sad smile as he took the open place next to you on the porch swing.
“You’ll only be an hour and a half from here, ducky. I’m literally gonna see you every weekend, mama. Whether you come to me or I come to you, I don’t care. I have to see you,” you groaned and pushed him away from you.
“I didn’t say you could come see me whenever you wanted. That’s quite an assumption you made there,” you giggled as he leaned on you, hand going to your bare knee and squeezing. “Oh, I know you didn’t, but you forget I’m helping you move into the dorm and will know where you live. You didn’t think you could get rid of me so easily did you, duck?”
You hummed contently and leaned into his touch, letting his arm slink over your shoulders, pulling you into his side. The smell of patchouli, lavender, and a scent that was pure Josh filled your senses making your eyelids flutter shut as his hand rubbed your arm. Home.
“Nothings gonna change. I promise.”
Josh held true to his promise to the best of his ability. Your first semester of school had been difficult to cope with. It was the first time you had lived away from home. From the boys. You went home every other weekend and your group would take the opposite weekends to come visit you.
It was the middle of finals, you had been up studying for almost a full twenty-four hours and you had much more to go. Your roommate had taken her finals early to fly home for break leaving the dorm to you which you were immensely thankful for.
You were hunched over your desk, typing a paper furiously. The only light in the room came from your shitty desk lamp and the back glow of your laptop screen. You had no idea what time it was, but a soft knock came on your door, forcing your eyes to peel away from the screen for the first time in hours.
The clock on your bedside table read a little past one in the morning and you sighed, getting up to answer the door as the knocking started again. Your body ached as you stood, allowing your limbs to stretch.
The bright, big smile of your favorite boy greeted you as you opened the door. “Josh? What’re you doing here? How did you get in?” He pushed past you, shopping bag in hand as he made his way into your room.
“I hadn’t heard from you in days. I know it’s finals, but I missed my ducky and wanted to see you. As for me getting in here, that is my secret,” he shot you a wink as he spoke, “I brought snacks for you, a movie for us to watch that I’ve been dying to show you, and a nice bottle of wine that I stole from my mom.”
You sighed, leaning against the wall as you rubbed tiredly at your eyes. “Josh, thank you, but I don’t have time to stop. I have my biggest final the day after tomorrow and I really need to finish this paper and study,” he rolled his eyes, moving the dirty clothes from your bed to the floor as he made himself comfortable on the twin size mattress.
“You have to rest at some point and I’m here to assist in that. Take the night off from studying and start again early in the morning. I will even go get you coffee. Now come on, I’m not taking no for an answer.”
You couldn’t fight the smile that took over your face as you gave in with an over exaggerated groan, watching him do a happy shimmy in your bed. You closed your laptop, making sure the document was saved and stretched your arms above your head, letting your joints pop.
“Okay, fine. I’m gonna run to the bathroom first to shower. I’ll be back,” you made your way from your dorm room, making sure your RA wasn’t near, visitation hours long over. The shower helped you relax, the hot water pummeling against your tense shoulders, happy that Josh had come to see you.
You missed him more than you would like to admit. Annoying boy.
As you shuffled back into your room you saw Josh had cleaned up the space a bit, having his own laptop set up for the movie, your bed adjusted to be able to hold both of you better. He had a fresh pair of sweats and a sweatshirt laid out for you on your desk chair, your string lights turned on, illuminating the space.
“Alright, mama, get changed so we can watch this,” he turned his back to offer you some semblance of privacy as you slipped into your clean clothes, his voice never stopping with his talking about his week. You jumped into the bed before he could, using the opportunity to take up more space.
Josh laughed, jumping on top of you, wrestling for the bottom section of the bed. Your exhaustion quickly hits you, giving up and letting him settle underneath you, letting you fully rest against him.
His voice carried through the space, rambling on about the movie as if every time you had spoken to him in the last month he hadn’t said the same exact things to you. As the movie played, Josh’s hand drew lazy circles on your hip that had become exposed, your sweatshirt riding up.
“How’s college life been, ducky?” You shrugged in response, mumbling out back to him. “Same old same old.” He stayed quiet for a second before chuckling. “No boyfriends? I thought guys would’ve been lining up at your door by now,” you shook your head, feeling his steady heartbeat beneath your ear.
“You know it’s not like that for me, Josh. Never has been.” As the years dragged on you became more okay with the idea of not finding someone. You didn’t mind being alone romantically. Sure, you thought about it every once in a while and how it would be nice to share time with someone else, but you didn’t need it like you thought you would.
Technically, you weren’t alone anyways. You had the boys, your roommate, and some other friends you had made since school started. You were okay. You had to be okay.
“They’re all idiots, ducky. Don’t know what they’re missing out on,” his slender fingers dipped under your chin, forcing your face upwards towards him. He had a soft smile on his face. One of the rare ones that didn’t showcase all of his teeth, but was still big enough to bring out the singular dimple he had.
He swallowed thickly as your gazes met. You searched his eyes trying to place what emotion was coursing through him, but he answered for you as he leaned down, hand splaying out on your jaw as he slowly connected your lips together.
His lips were plush and soft as they met yours, moving leisurely against one another like you had all the time in the world together. His tongue parted your lips, brushing against yours for the first time.
The sensation had a shiver rolling down your back as he smirked into the kiss, hands moving down to your waist and having you climb on him. You placed a leg on either side of his narrow waist, hands trailing up to his mop of curls and tangling them in between your fingers.
His hands kneaded at the flesh on your hips, gently pushing you down to feel his hard on pressing into your core. An involuntary moan rumbled from your throat that had him nudging his hips up into you again.
Josh’s warm hands slid underneath your sweatshirt, grabbing the hem as he went and removing it from your body. His breath stuttered in his throat as you briefly separated to allow him to pull it off of you. Your eyes quickly scanned his features, wanting to remember this moment, searing it into your memory.
One of his hands cupped the back of your neck bringing you back down to him, taking your bottom lip in between his, teeth gently scraping. “Lay down for me, ducky,” his breathing was already growing shallow as he spoke against your mouth, starting to move you to lay underneath him.
Your head hit your pillow, a giggle escaping from you as Josh peered down at you, taking you in like it was the first time he had ever laid eyes on you. Your heart rate increased when you realized how your best friend was seeing you.
“No, don’t do that. Don’t fall back into yourself. Not with me,” he shook his head as he watched you slowly retreat internally from him, fear creeping into you at the prospect of what was happening. “I can’t lose you, Joshy. I don’t want to do this if I’m going to lose you,” your breathing was labored, panic setting in at the sheer idea of losing him.
He knelt down, placing gentle kisses across your face. His lips danced across your cheeks, the tip of your nose, your forehead, your chin, your eyelashes, leaving no section of your face without his lips having touched it.
“You couldn’t lose me if you tried, mama,” your smile slowly came back as he moved down your neck, sucking into the skin, eliciting a hiss from your mouth before his tongue flattened on your pulse, soothing the love mark.
You could feel his smile on you as he moved further down, hands cupping your breasts and pinching your nipples, letting the soft peaks harden before enclosing his mouth around one.
Your back arched off the mattress, pushing him further into your chest as he switched, continuing the motion on you. “Jo-josh, wait, wait,” he immediately pulled back as you moaned out, not wanting to lose his contact.
“What’s wrong?” Your face burned at the admission you were about to speak out to Josh. You were fairly certain he knew, but it still didn’t lessen the embarrassment of the confession. “I just want you to know that this is my first. I haven’t done this before with anyone,” his gaze softened at your words before he kissed you deeply, groaning into your mouth.
“I don’t care, ducky. If you want me to be your first then I’ll gladly do it, baby, but if you want to wait I understand,” you quickly shook your head, letting your hands nestle into his locks, pulling him to you.
“No, I don’t want to wait. I want you, Josh,” his eyes darkened, as his hand slipped into the waistband of your sweats. “Fuck, you’re soaked,” his voice went deeper, his index finger putting light pressure on your clit.
Your eyes squeezed shut at the feeling, a gasp falling from your lips as he made slow circles on you. The familiar heat started to build in your lower stomach as you moaned, his name falling from your lips in a breathless whimper.
He switched his fingers, letting his middle finger slip into you with ease. Josh was quiet as he watched you explode into euphoria, his breathing ragged as he rode you through your orgasm. “God damn, ducky. That was so hot, holy shit,” his smile didn’t lessen as he kissed you again.
He put his finger into his mouth, sucking your slick off of it, eyes fluttering at the motion. “Need you, Joshy. Please,” you rolled your hips up, clit throbbing as his dick pressed into you.
“Needy aren’t ‘cha?” He teased as you rolled your eyes, letting his hands pull your sweats off your body, helping him quickly strip off his own clothes. He put his open palm under your mouth and you eyed him as he smiled sweetly at you.
“Spit into my hand, baby,” you did as he said, noticing his brow furrow and a low moan come from him as it dribbled onto him. His hand went down to stroke himself, letting your spit coat him.
You tensed up as he ran his cock through your folds. His eyes looked up to meet yours, fingers pinching your chin to look at him. “Take a deep breath. Relax, I’m gonna take care of you and go slow, ‘kay?”
You nodded, letting your body go limp as his eyes snapped down to watch his tip slip into you. He shuddered as you moaned. “Jesus, you’re so tight,” he shakily spoke out, pushing his thumb onto your clit.
The feeling of him stretching you out for the first time was one you would never forget. The burning slowly subsided as he sat fully in you, letting you adjust. You accepted him inch by inch, the fullness something you would crave for the rest of your days.
“Let me know when I can move, sweetie,” Josh choked out as your velvet walls held him firmly in you, gently pulsating against him as you tried to adjust as quickly as possible. “Mo-move. Move, babe,” you breathed out, wrapping your arms around his neck as he withdrew from you to snap his hips back into you.
He moved gently and slowly like you were the most delicate flower he’d ever held in his life. Afraid that if he handled you too roughly you would crumple in his hand. He wanted to show you how special you were to him. That you were his flower. He felt honored that you had allowed him to do this with you. That you wanted him to be your first.
You two kissed the entire time, letting your legs wrap around his waist, ankles crossing on his lower back. His hands massaged your breasts, heavy breathing mixed together as you moaned and whimpered into each other's mouths.
“I’m so close, baby,” you nodded at his words, head lolling to the side as he moved his lips across your jaw and neck, kissing the hollow of your collarbones. His hand made quick circles on your clit, trying to get you there with him and a groan fell from you as you tighten your legs around him, meeting his thrusts as you fell over the edge.
He pulled out from you as his cum fell across the soft skin on your stomach. His face was flush, curls stuck to his forehead and neck with sweat, face contorted in pleasure as he jerked himself through his own finish.
You both glistened with sweat, the movie still playing lowly in the back as the string lights cast him in a beautiful glow. You smiled at each other as he climbed off of you, grabbing your towel from your earlier shower and wiping you clean.
You gasped as the rough material rubbed against your core. “Sorry, sorry,” he chuckled as he finished wiping you up, using the same towel to clean himself.
The two of you quietly got dressed as Josh laid in bed, watching as you laid back down with him, laying your head on his chest. “I think I missed most of the movie. Guess we’ll have to rewatch it,” he laughed, kissing the top of your head as your eyelids grow heavy.
“Oh absolutely. Next weekend, ducky.” You two laid in silence as the screen went dark, sleep encompassing you, but you quietly spoke out to your best friend, wanting him to know how much this meant to you.
“Thank you, Josh. Thank you,” he was already asleep.
You nailed, no pun intended, your finals that week. Neither of you spoke of the night again, but nothing shifted in your relationship. He was still Josh and you were still ducky. No one knew and you wanted to keep it that way.
The feelings of content you had come to terms with earlier in your university days came and went in waves. Some days worse than others.
As college continued on for you, you only had one serious relationship. His name was Dominick and he was a total jackass. Of course, you didn’t know that at the time. Maybe you did, but after watching everyone around you become engaged, married, get into serious relationships back to back, you felt like you were missing something.
Dominick was there. A typical business major that lived in his frat house should have been the first clue to his true self, but you wanted to ignore it. Someone was finally interested in you. You felt like you had to take what you were given and that just happened to be him.
When you took him home for the first time, the boys were anything but friendly with him, almost ignoring him entirely. The parents tried to have a conversation with him, but he seemed completely uninterested in holding more than a three word response to anyone.
This was the night of your first fight. You told him how important that night was to you, that you wanted him to make a good impression to the people that meant the most to you. Especially Josh. He didn’t know what the big deal was which only made it worse.
You stopped seeing everyone as often as you used to, Dominick having you with him every weekend instead. The boy's music took off, Greta Van Fleet had become their life. You were so proud of them, watching their dreams come true right before your eyes.
Josh texted you pictures and videos almost every day as they recorded their first album. You were their biggest fan, their first fan. The first Josh girl you liked to remind him.
The first time you saw them perform it was like watching a moving piece of art. They fell into their roles so well and so quickly. Josh’s voice was like nothing you had ever heard before and watching him prance around on stage had your heart soar for him.
Your senior year of university was the most stressful you had endured yet. Your senior thesis had been kicking your ass and Josh invited you to one of their shows, but Dominick insisted you go to his frats end of semester party.
You begrudgingly told Josh you would love to, but Dominick had plans for you both that night already. Hearing the pain in his voice at your words cracked your heart every time it happened. Always a promise of next time, but there hadn’t been a next time yet. You hated it.
That night at the party, you continuously checked your phone for updates from him, but there hadn’t been a single text from him all night. You had been standing in the corner of the house, watching people rithe against each other, alcohol spilling across the hardwood floors, smoke carrying through the room.
You hadn’t seen your boyfriend in almost an hour and making the decision to go look for him was the blessing in disguise you didn’t know you needed. When you opened a bedroom door and saw him fucking a girl from his statistics course, your eyes met his, filling with tears as you turned on your heel, shutting the door behind you as you made your way out of the house.
You walked quickly to your car down the block as you breathed heavily, puffs of air coming out in front of you. You fumbled with your keys, hands a trembling mess as you tried to unlock your door.
As your car struggled to turn over you screamed, hitting the steering wheel over and over as angry tears flowed from your eyes onto your sweater. You grabbed your phone, shaking hands trying to find his contact.
It rang a few times too many and as you were about to give up, sobs wracking your body, his voice came through the speaker. “Ducky, I’m about to go on. I’ll call you back, okay?”
You didn’t respond, hand clamped over your mouth to stifle the uncontrollable whimpers coming from you. A loud cry escaped you as you finally spoke. “Okay. Have a good show,” his worried tone quickly spoke, but you ended the call before he could finish.
“Are you crying? What’s happ-” you threw your phone onto the floor of the passenger side as you took a shaky breath, your car finally starting for you. You made the short drive back to your apartment, sitting in the parking lot for too long when you had a car where the heater didn’t work and it was December in Michigan.
You reluctantly reached over and grabbed your phone, dozens of missed calls and texts from Josh and one text from Dominick. You unlocked your phone, dialing Josh back, but getting his voicemail, knowing he was on stage right then.
“Hi Josh. I’m, uh, sorry about earlier. Didn’t mean to scare you. Um, I was at that party with Dominick and I walked in on him with another girl. Guess it’s a good thing, right? He was such an ass, but he was the only guy that had ever shown any interest in me. I’m that pathetic that I would stay with a guy who told me that he was way too good for me and that I should be thankful to be with him. Did I tell you he said that to me? He did. I just wanted to be wanted. God, I just-I’m sad, Josh. I’m sorry, I’ll talk to you later,” you ended the call and trudged back to your apartment.
You quietly climbed into bed, letting silent tears fall down your cheeks as you tried to will the night to end.
A hand rubbed gently on your back, the smell of patchouli hit your nose. You rolled over, peeling your eyes open and coming face to face with your best friend. His face had a soft smile as he knelt by your bed.
“Hey, ducky girl. How’re you doing?” You shook your head, pulling him into the bed with you. He kicked his shoes off before climbing under the covers, wrapping you up in him. His soft shirt rubbed under your cheek as it grew wet with tears.
His hand went into your hair, scratching your scalp as he held you tightly to him. “Don’t you ever call me like that again. You do not call me and hang up while you’re feeling like that. Scared the shit out of me, mama,” his cheek pressed onto the crown of your head.
“‘M sorry. I knew you were going on and didn’t want to bother you,” he shook his head. “I don’t care about that. You scared me because you were crying like that and just hung up. I tried calling you back and you didn’t answer. Sam literally dragged me on stage. I’m pretty sure that was the worst show of my life because all I could think of was if you were okay. Don’t do that again.”
You nodded your head, letting his hand rub your arm. “We’ll talk about that voicemail in the morning, too. Sleep, ducky.” You didn’t need to be told twice, you were out minutes later.
Graduation happened only two weeks later. Everyone was in the stands screaming for you as your name got called, your degree finally complete. When you met them outside the stadium, you jumped into Josh’s arms, hearing him scream as he jumped you both around, the other boys joining in.
That night at dinner you sat thigh to thigh with Josh, chatting excitedly with the boys about their upcoming tour. Of course, you were having a hard time with the idea of not seeing them for as long as it was going to be, but you knew they needed to do this.
Your name was called from the other end of the table and you turned to see Karen and Lori with bright smiles directed at you as your moms eyes shined brightly in your direction. “The question that everyones dying to know; what’s next?” Your smile grew as you looked at them and shrugged.
“That was actually a surprise I wanted to share with everyone tonight,” you bounced anxiously in your seat as the table's undivided attention fell to you. “I got offered a position in Nashville. I start next month.” After the shock wore off the boys jumped up from their seats, running around the table to wrap their arms around you, lifting you from your seat and screaming.
You laughed as other people in the restaurant turned their attention to what was happening. Josh’s eyes looked like they were going to bug out of his head as his thoughts came rushing out of his mouth a million miles a minute.
“You’re gonna be so close to me-us. I’m-we’re gonna see you all the time after the tour and on breaks. Do you have an apartment? I have a spare bedroom at mine that you can take! That way you don’t have to worry about finding a place unless you already have one and in that case just forget about it, but I’ll still need to get you a key.”
You giggled as you watched the excitement course through him and the guys, talking over each other about what they wanted to show you when you got there.
None of that happened the way you all wanted. Once you moved to Nashville life swept you all up. The boys had been gone for almost an entire year and when they came home on breaks you were always on a work trip, having to travel constantly for your company. You missed them by a day at a time or they missed you by two.
Everything changed in that year. Your late bloomer, ugly duckling status, had disappeared. It seemed to almost happen overnight. You woke up one day and relationships changed. You were treated differently, instantly nicer. You noticed people looking at you more, men started approaching you and asking for your number on nights out with co-workers.
You didn’t really notice the change in yourself until you went home for a quick weekend and your mom almost fell over as you walked in the front door. Karen and Lori’s jaws hung slack. When they took a picture of you with your mom, you couldn’t help but stare at the image. Puberty had finally hit you. Sure, it was a few years late, but it had happened.
However, it was the last thing on your mind, excitement bubbling over into your workday because tonight was the first night in nearly a year that you were seeing the boys again.
They had a show in Nashville before a bit of a break and your ticket had been waiting in your inbox from Josh the minute it was available. You ended up leaving work early, too riled up to even begin to think about work, your boss giving you the go ahead, excited for you.
As you arrived at the arena you quickly found your seat, your leg bounced with jitters and nerves setting in. It was just Josh and the boys. You had known them since you were seven. Nothing had changed.
It was your Josh. Your best friend that you talked to everyday over text, FaceTime simply not an option as your work schedules rivaled each other so often.
As the lights dimmed and the screams echoed of excited fans, your smile grew as you saw the familiar figure make its way to the center of the stage.
Your smile never diminished, dancing and singing along to every song. You couldn’t believe how much they had grown and shaped into complete public figure personas. Your Josh was made for this life and you knew it. You could see it in the way he eyed the crowd as he sang his heart out night after night. It fed him and the attention he so desperately craved.
Honestly, you were slightly relieved it didn’t solely fall on you anymore, but as you watched him go to the crowd, handing out flowers to those on the barricade, your heart leapt into your throat.
His eyes happened to bounce up to the balcony you were on, but his gaze was quick and fleeting. It was dark, he wouldn’t be able to see you of course.
As the concert was coming to an end, you left your seat, starting to make your way towards backstage to meet them. You were questioned each step of the way, even though you had a badge, saying that your ID didn’t really look too much like you.
When you finally made your way to the backroom where they stood, laughing and chatting loudly about the show, Jita’s gaze landed on you.
Her eyes widened as she took you in, smacking Jake’s arm to get his attention. Jake’s eyes fell on you next, brows furrowing as you nervously shifted from one leg to the next, clearly not recognizing who you were.
You lightly waved and laughed. “Hey, great show,” Jake’s eyes bugged out as he rushed over to you, enveloping you in a bone crushing hug. “Holy fuck, ducky! I didn’t even know it was you,” he was laughing loudly, pulling you back at arms length to see you.
“Yeah, apparently there’s this thing called second puberty. Hit me super hard,” he nodded his head, pulling you back into his embrace. “No shit. God, ducky it’s so good to see you. I fucking missed you. You have no idea how hard it was to handle them. For a year. Alone. I needed my sidekick to help me,” he swayed back and forth as he mumbled into your hair.
“Can’t even imagine, Jake. So sorry you had to handle that. For a year. Alone.” You copied his tone and he let you go, letting Jita take you into a quick hug, saying how good it was to see you.
Josh was nowhere to be found, but Sam caught sight of you next. An actual double take happened as he ran over to you, lifting you from your feet as the same interaction that had just happened, happened again.
As you scanned around for the mop of curls and let your ears tune in to be able to hear him, Danny walked into the room, hair dripping as he clearly had just exited the shower.
His mouth opened, wordless as he took your hand in his, laughing as he pulled you into him. His skin was warm as you wrapped your arms around his torso, head landing on his chest. “Jesus, ducky. Hardly even recognized you. How’re you doing? I want to hear all about this job. They have you traveling all the damn time. We’ve missed you, duck.”
You fell into easy conversation with the drummer, complimenting him on his new hair look, telling him how well the makeup he adorned each night suited him. Your back was facing the entry to the room, Sam and Jake catching you up on their travels and stories when he entered the room.
You quickly turned at the sound of his voice, eyes stuck to his phone screen as he walked towards the group. It fell silent as Josh spoke up, eyes quickly darting over the posse. “Where’s ducky? Has she come back yet? Did she get lost?”
He didn’t look at you again as he walked to grab a drink that sat on the table in the room. You laughed, clearing your throat, causing his head to snap back in your direction, dropping the cup that was in his hand.
“No, I got back okay. I was stopped quite often though, but I am glad they take your guys' safety so seriously! Very thorough,” before you could finish your sentence, Josh had crossed the room and had his arms wrapped around you.
Patchouli. Your eyes fluttered shut as he filled your senses. “Hey Joshy,” you whispered, wrapping your arms around his neck, giggles flowing from you, before he peeled away reluctantly.
“I like the new look. You better take care of it,” you said as he still stood in complete silence. Your fingers ran through his curls, brushing over the newly shaved sides, overly exaggerating your examination of the new haircut.
“Shit, ducky. This is the first time he’s ever been rendered speechless. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him be quiet for this long,” Sam laughed as Josh’s eyes quickly darted around your face and body, confusion evident as his brother took you away from him, wrapping his arm around your shoulders.
“Alright, we’re hitting some bars tonight. Ducky, I challenge you to a drink off,” you leaned into Sam’s side as you walked out, quickly looking back at Josh. He was still rooted to his spot, every emotion he was feeling flashing across his face.
The glass slammed onto the table as you choked down another shot. You were three in and about to call it, still nursing a beer, but Sam and Jake were celebrating the group's complete reunion they said.
You leaned against the bar, going to order another drink for Jake when the third random guy of the night approached you. “Hey, pretty girl. What’re you drinking?” You offered a quick smile, crossing your arms over your chest. “Oh, I’m just ordering for my friend. Thank you, though,” you yelled over the music.
He leaned in closer, the smell of booze evident on his breath. “Let’s have a dance!” You tried to turn him down, but a tall figure stood next to you. “She’s with me, man!” A sigh of relief fell from you as Danny gently pulled you under his arm. The man quickly backed off as you beamed at Danny.
“Thank you. My hero!” He laughed, a blush tinting his cheeks at your words. “Don’t mention it.” You two walked back to the booth to continue chatting, the guys playing pool near the back of the bar as you two sat close, arms brushing each other each time you moved.
You had tears streaming down your face as Danny recanted a tale from Italy about throwing stuff from their balcony window, but it almost got them kicked out of the hotel when Sam tried throwing furniture.
“Ah, I’ve missed you guys so much. Doesn’t feel right without you all here,” Danny nodded his head, hand gently taking yours in his. “I know what you mean. I’ve missed you, ducky.” You felt eyes on you.
Without a second thought your head turned and immediate eye contact was made with Josh. He stood leaning on the wall, pool cue in hand, knuckles stark white from the grip he had on it. His gaze bore into yours, anger and irritation dripping from him as he watched you and Danny.
The boy next to you brought your attention back to him as he started another story. The mood was soured. Josh had no right to be mad. He had hardly said two words to you all night. Literally two words, “Beer and shots?” and it was directed at the whole group, not just you.
You had missed him, but maybe something had changed within him. People were bound to change. You were just silently hoping he hadn’t outgrown you. You weren’t sure what you would do if he had.
The thoughts raced through your mind as the group reconvened, calling it a night as last call was made in the bar. Jake haphazardly took you in his arms, waddling you out of the bar with him, laughter flowing as he stood directly behind you, arms wrapped over your chest, crushing you to him as he yelled in your ear.
“Lunch or dinner tomorrow, ducky. Maybe both. I’ll call you, ‘kay?” He spoke in your ear and you nodded your head, patting his hands as you removed them from you, handing him off to Jita. “Course, Jake. I’ll see you guys tomorrow!” You waved to them as they continued walking off, Josh far ahead of them, not turning to look back at you as you climbed into your Uber.
As you got home, you kicked your shoes off, relief palpable, instantly dulling the ache those shoes had caused from the hours you spent in them.
You jumped, a small scream coming from your mouth as someone pounded on your door. You slowly made your way to it, peering out the peephole.
“Josh?” You spoke out as you opened the door, stumbling back as he made his way in. “What the hell was that?” His voice boomed as he turned to face you as you closed the door, hands on his hips, eyes wide and hair disheveled.
“What are you talking about?” A humorless laugh fell from him as he rolled his eyes at you. “You know exactly what I’m talking about. You and Danny. Really?” You narrowed your eyes at him, irritation bubbling in your gut at his words.
“What about me and Danny? The fact that nothing was happening?” His eyebrows shot up, stepping towards you. “Nothing? Are you fucking joking? Nothing? So Danny just said he was going to take you out for dinner for nothing? Because you absolutely weren’t flirting with him all night? Because all those guys at the bar that came up to you were nothing?”
Your mouth opened and closed as he continued spewing these words, faster and faster. “What the hell are you talking about, Josh? Danny did not ask me out. Those guys at the bar meant nothing. Of course they meant nothing. You know what, no! I do not owe you any explanation. You haven’t said more than two words to me all night! I haven’t seen my best friend in almost a year and this is how I get treated the first night I see you?”
He shook his head, eyes falling down to the floor. “Oh trust me, I know what I’m talking about. I saw it. Sam saw it. Jake saw it. It was all they talked about all night. How much you had changed since we last saw you. Danny most definitely saw it. All those fucking douchebags at the bar saw it. You know why I haven’t said anything to you all night? Because I don’t know how to!”
You stopped in your tracks. A silence fell over you two as you figured out how to respond. You whispered to him as his words settled over you. “What do you mean you don’t know how to? Josh, it’s me,” he had calmed down, but as he looked at you, you could tell he was anxious.
“Is it? Ducky, I don’t-I didn’t even recognize you tonight,” you slowly approached him, taking his hand in yours. “Promise. I haven’t changed. I mean, my appearance changed, but it’s me. Still your ducky.”
Josh quickly moved his hands to cup your cheeks, pulling you into him. His lips collided with yours and it felt like home. It felt like everything you knew. Everything you wanted. Everything was Josh. It was Josh.
You lead him to your room, hands exploring each other for the first time since your freshman year of university. A complete lifetime ago. A lifetime you wouldn’t want to live again without him by your side.
A trail of clothes was left behind from the living room to the bedroom, as you collapsed on the bed with him, eager kisses and heavy breaths filled the noiseless space.
“Mine. You’re mine,” you nodded as he littered your neck with bites and marks. “Always, Josh. Always have been,” a whine flew from your mouth as he took a nipple in his mouth.
He made quick work, kissing down your sternum, landing between your legs. Your stomach caved in, back arching off the bed as he licked a singular strip on your dripping center.
“Oh my god!” He shook his head, teeth nipping the inside of your thigh. “My name. I want to hear my name, mama.” You giggled as a low groan escaped from his lips.
“Still as cocky as ever, Kiszka.” Without hesitation he took your clit in his mouth, sucking hard, thighs clamping tight around his head at the motion. “For good reason,” he mumbled against you as his tongue explored you for the first time.
“Fuck. Fuck. You taste amazing, mama,” incoherent words tumbled from your lips as he continued working on you, two fingers slipping into you, working in tandem with his mouth.
He was quickly pushing you to the edge, curling his fingers and hitting the sweet spot in you. “C’mon, baby. You’re so close, I can feel it,” he rolled your clit in his mouth and you saw white. It was complete bliss as waves of pleasure crashed onto you, mouth gaping as choked moans fell from you.
Josh crawled back up to you, placing his open palm under your mouth, a shit eating grin taking over his features as the deja vu hit you both. You smiled, letting the spit hang from your mouth into his hand, Josh wasted no time and licked your lips as he used his lubricated hand to stroke himself.
Your hands tangled into his hair and broke apart as you smiled at him. “I really do love the new look,” crimson stained his cheeks from the heat in the room and your compliment to him. “Thank you, mama. Wanted to look good for you,” you giggled as he kissed across your face.
Josh entered you and went to the hilt right away. The wind knocked out of you at the movement, your head falling back against the pillow, eyes rolling with pure bliss, feelings running through you at a million miles a minute.
“Shit, I missed you, sweetie. So much,” your eyes watered at the pace that he set immediately, pounding into you, not letting you catch your breath. “My girl, always been my girl. Fuck, I fucking need you. Every single fucking day, ducky,” one leg landed on his shoulder, an entirely new angle opening for him.
Whimpers and moans filled the room, skin hitting skin seeping in between the quiet time when Josh wasn’t talking, confessing everything to you.
You pushed him onto his back, straddling him, hand grabbing his achingly hard cock and lining him up at your cunt. “Missed you, too, babe,” the words fell breathless as he thrusted his hips up into you, matching your timing as you rolled your hips over him, small bounces meeting his thrusts.
Your hands landed on his toned chest, a large smile took over your features as Josh continued talking to you. “Oh, fuck, mama. My beautiful girl. Always been the most gorgeous girl I’ve ever seen, you know that? Didn’t tell you enough, ‘m sorry. So sorry,” you silenced him as you leaned down, connecting your lips again, needs and wants mingling.
“‘S okay, Joshy. I knew it was you,” his eyes fell closed as you continued your movements, jaw straining, sweat glistening off you both, sticking you together. “Fuck, gonna cum. So close,” you whimpered, but Josh flipped you both back, placing you on your back again.
“Look at me, mama,” your eyes peeled open to see his gaze staring down at you. Adoration, awe, devotion, love. His eyes said everything you both had ever wanted to say. It pushed you over the edge. The all encompassing feeling of natural, unadulterated love flowed from him to you.
His hips faltered, slowing almost to a complete stop as he finished in you as your last moments of your orgasm fell from you. Your hands pushed the sweaty curls from his forehead, smiling brightly at him. His eyes slowly looked you over.
“I’ve always seen your beauty, ducky. I hope you know that,” you nodded your head at him as your fingers continue moving through his locks. “Oh I know,” his hands landed on your jaw, thumbs rubbing small circles into your cheeks as he kissed you.
When he pulled out, a small whine left you as he laughed. “Don’t worry, mama. Give me twenty minutes and I’ll be ready to go again.” Your laugh mimicked his as it bounced off the walls.
He disappeared into the bathroom reappearing with a warm washcloth, wiping you clean as gently as he could. “I swear we’ve done this before,” he laughed as he finished cleaning you up, lips landing on your cheek.
“God, I hope it was better this time,” he climbed into bed with you, wrapping you up in him. Patchouli. You breathed him in deeply as you nuzzled into his neck. “The first time was perfect, thank you very much,” you spoke out to him, laughing as his adams apple bobbed as he chuckled.
“I knew I was completely in love with you that night, you know that? I had known since the eighth grade dance when I kissed you, but that night totally solidified it. I was just too much of a pussy to do anything about it. I knew you were meant to do bigger things and I didn’t want to hold you back,” you peered up at him, shock taking over your features.
“Me? Me doing bigger things? Joshua, do you know what your job is?” He looked down at you and his dimple was deep as he laughed. “I literally just told you that I love you and have been in love with you since we were children and that’s what you focus on?” You shrugged and moved closer to him, putting your leg over his waist.
“Yeah yeah,” you reached over him and turned the nightstand lamp off, sighing a content breath. “Night, Joshy.” A shocked gasp left him as you rolled over and away from him.
His fingers dug into your side, attacking your neck as you squealed. “Alright, alright! I give, I give! I love you, too.” He sighed, laughter subsiding as he pulled his lip between his teeth.
“Say it again,” your smile grew as you did. “I am hopelessly and madly in love with you, Josh. Better?” He leaned down, head landing in the juncture between your neck and collarbone.
“Much better. Love you, ducky girl.”
You never would have thought that one of the shittiest days of your life all those years ago would have led you to where you were today. Josh was your rock, protector, partner, all of the above. You were never the ugly duckling in his eyes. No, in his eyes you had always been the swan that was meant to be with him and his flock. You were his flock. His ducky.

@sanctuarymade sent: 🍻 + “ is there someone you have a crush on ?”  from jake (when they're smol) / drunken confessions / accepting.
jemma will later blame the warmth that climbs up her cheeks on the alcohol running through her system, on the several beers she’s had by this point. all the same, though, she can’t help the giggle that bubbles past her lips. they’ve slipped into one of their hiding spots on the sullivan property -- this one being one of the haylofts in a barn on the end of the property furthest from the house -- and jake’s gotten the alcohol and she’s leaning against him and she’s content. she’s not worrying about going back to oxford, about all of the work on her dissertations she has left to do, she’s happy to just stay here in this moment. jake’s always been good at creating that peace within her.
dark brown eyes look up at the golden-haired boy that’s been her best friend for most of her life, a different kind of warmth in her gaze before forcing an eyeroll.   “jake. i am a teenage girl. of course i have a crush on someone.”
she looks back down before he gets that unbearably adorable offended look and she breaks and tells him it’s you, you moron. instead she settles back against him, murmuring again, “‘course i’ve got a crush on someone… don’t really matter though, since he don’t like me back that way.”

body + food talk below!
i grew up having a grown woman’s body. i was always thicker and curvier and not in the nicest way—i was 12. i didn’t fit into yet. i was wider than some women who’d already given birth, twice. i had wider hips and a chest and thighs two times the size of anyone else’s. everyone else was still so slim and small. i never saw anyone else with cellulite.
all i wanted was to be thin, and finally, i was thin at sixteen. it only came from being stuck in a toxic space, so anxious i could hardly eat anymore. the only people who noticed were my parents— i hardly noticed any difference. i only saw the body i obsessed over for years and cried over and put through so much stress due to myfitnesspal. (FUCK that app ✨✨✨)
and these days, it fluctuates, it comes and goes. some days are good, some are bad, but it’s so sad! to think about what thoughts would go through my younger self’s head.
“i’ll never be attractive, i’m stuck like this, everyone else is so much prettier, my legs aren’t amazing like the other skinny girls!”
just! no child should worry about that. no child should be left to wonder why their other literal children friends get catcalled and they don’t. (not pretty enough to be validated like everyone else? what’s wrong with me?) we rlly live in a society huh 🥲
some of these thoughts stick around. i still see myself sometimes as that too-big little girl. all that “thick thighs save lives” positivity was about mature, adult women. not quite a surprisingly curvy middle schooler.
but what never truly goes away is the “i’m not good enough.” it’s just stuck in there! i was never attractive enough for anything! in high school i was flat out told i was ugly, dressed weird, had a nose too big, cried too much — and made fun of for one of my personal issues at the time.
some people looked at me different when i lost weight. like losing weight was an ugly duckling moment. i didn’t hear i was a beautiful young woman until i was slim.
as an adult, it just makes it so much harder to be confident sometimes, and that’s okay. nobody’s self esteem is high all the time :’) life is always improving in small ways.

"Mom, why should I do this ?!" he practically yelled into the phone. “Okay, Mom. I understood. I'll call you later." He could hardly contain his anger, not wanting to quarrel with his mother. He hung up and threw the phone on the sofa, kicking it forcefully. From anger it seemed even the air in the hall was not enough.
“This is the first time I've seen you so angry after talking with your parents.” He heard Jaebeom laugh behind him and turned to him.
“Oh, hi, Jaebeom.” He was so confused that he didn't even notice when Jaebeom came in.
"Are you okay?" Jaebeom came closer squeezing his shoulder
“Almost” he sat down on the sofa, throwing his head back
"What happened?" Jaebeom asked anxiously, sitting down next to him.
“There is one, person...” he had to make every effort to restrain himself and choose the most neutral words in the description “she is the daughter of the best friends of my parents. Every time she appeared within a radius of half mile from me, my life turned to hell. She's a devil! And so this ... decided to come to Seoul. And my mother told her friends that I would meet her at the airport and spend her entire vacation with her. For some reason my family decided that I was a personal babysitter for this mad girl !!!” he was just seething with anger.
"Babysitter? She's that so young, how old is she? " Jaebeom laughed while watching him
“She's 5-6 years younger than me,” he shook his head.
“At 5-6? Well, she's not baby anymore, she's around 22. When was the last time you saw her?"
He looked at Jaebeom in disbelief. But really, you was 22. Only now did he realize that the last time he saw you ten years ago. For him you have remained an obnoxious child who spoils his life. He remembered how you beat him, without any physical training, on your first day of martial arts training in his studio, even though he had been in for a year and was older and stronger than you. After that, all his friends laughed at him for several more months. He shook his head, what's the difference how old you were, you hardly changed. “Moreover, if she’s already an adult, then I don’t understand why I should do this at all”
"If it worries you so much, do you want me to go instead of you and meet her, what does she look like?" Jaebeom smiled, clapping his knees
“I have no idea, I only remember her when she was 12. In addition, she will complain to her parents that I personally did not meet her, my mother will kill me after” he moaned, sliding to the floor, quietly and peacefully accepting his inevitable death. He got up off the floor picking up the phone from the couch. “I'll be back soon with this crazy girl, better hide the sharp objects just in case,” he said, heading out the door as Jaebeom bursts into laughter on the sofa.
... ... ...
He was leaning on the railing near the arrival gate. He raised his collar high and lowered the hat almost over his eyes, hoping that no one would recognize him. He looked at the time, your plane has already landed. “How long can she collect her luggage? Did she bring the whole house with her?" He doesn't stop muttering to himself as people keep walking past him. One girl caught his attention, a beauty in skinny jeans and a red jacket over a cropped top. Wow, he seems to fall in love from first sight, he chuckled above himself, unable to take his eyes off her. She walked in his direction, did she really recognize him, he hoped he would be able to persuade this girl not to post a photo in SNS at least until evening. Although he was glad that such a beauty immediately recognized him, despite the fact that dark glasses covered part of the girl's face, her beauty fascinated him and he could not take his eyes off. The girl came up to him and, without saying a word, took a selfie with him, that's stunned him a little, which made him just look at her while she typing something in the phone.
“Sorry, you couldn’t uploading our photo to SNS for at least a few hours later, I’m here not officially, I don’t want a bunch of fans to gather at the entrance.” He asked politely, hoping to negotiate with this girl. “Please, and I'll leave you an autograph and buy you coffee,” he smiled broadly, trying to get her attention. He realized that he secretly hoped that the girl would agree to drink coffee with him, giving him the opportunity to get to know her.
The girl dropped her sunglasses on the tip of her nose and looked down at him before meeting his gaze, "What are you talking about, moron?" the girl answered him in a cold tone, putting on her glasses again and throwing her black leather travel bag at him. The girl picked up the phone, answering the call, heading towards the exit, while he looked in complete shock at the heavy bag in his hands, not understanding what was happening. "Yes mom. Mark met me. Everything okay, so don't worry and stop calling me every five minutes. And I love you" you hung up the phone, turning again in his direction, while he came to himself from the fact that it is YOU! And how that ugly twelve-year-old duckling from his memory turned into this fatal beauty, into which he practically fell in love at first sight?! "Are we going to hang out here until nightfall? Of course I understand the place is cool and all that, but maybe we'll go already?" you said pointing to the exit
“Oh, yes,” he muttered, still unable to come from the shock. He silently trudged towards the car. You got into the car after you greeted his manager, and he continued to stand by the car hugging your bag. The manager walked over to him and took the bag, putting it in the trunk.
"Mark, are you okay?" the manager asked him when he didn't even move
"What? Yes, let's go" he got into the car. You took off your glasses and sat with your eyes closed, why were you so beautiful. He could not think about anything all the way staring at you.
"You're staring!" you said irritably without opening your eyes
He turned sharply forward, turning away from you. What's wrong with you, - he scolded himself mentally. After drove to the agency and taking your bag, he went to the elevator “Let's go. You will have to wait for me. I have a dance practice," he said, clicking on the desired floor.
You entered the practice room where Jaebeom was waiting for the others, who are clearly late. Jaebeom's eyes widened when he saw you. Yep, apparently he had the same reaction, he laugh at himself.
“Hi, you must be ________! I've heard a lot about you, nice to meet you” Jaebeom smiled broadly as he stood up from the couch.
You came closer to Jaebeom shaking his hand and smiling broadly, which made you look even more beautiful. "Hi, me too. Wow, oppa you're so handsome. Can I take a picture with you, I'm a fan of yours” you said sweetly, and his jaw dropped from what he just saw
"Oppa?" he stared at you
“Yes, he's oppa. Isn't that how girls call handsome guys like you?” You didn't take your eyes off Jaebeom, obviously flirting with him while taking a selfie.
Jaebeom laughed, nodding his head, “Well, as you say. I'll leave you, I need to call the others and find out where they are. See you later” Jaebeom smiled at you before heading for the exit.
You waved to him and when Jaebeom left, you called your mom “Hi Mom,” you said when she appeared on the screen. “We just arrived at Mark's dance practice. He's so cute and let me be with them. By the way, he already booked a hotel for me.” You came up to him hugging him “Tell his became so beautiful, it makes to want to take him in arms, no?” you slightly pinched his cheek, smiling broadly
“Hello, good to see you,” he said to your mom, listening to her gratitude for agreeing to take care of you. After you said goodbye, you hung up, shoving the phone back into your pocket.
“I didn't even think that you could be so nice. I thought bitchiness it was your only nature" he said, throwing your bag on the sofa. You turned in his direction returning your cold look, which you gave him before." What hotel? What were you talking about? "
"You didn't think I was going to waste my vacation on you, did you?" You asked raising an eyebrow. “I have my own business here, so let's not interfere with each other. Send me your schedule so that I know where you are if mom suddenly calls. Unfortunately, we will have to have dinner together several times in order to send joint photos to our parents. I will write when I can, when I'll be know my schedule” you continued to say adjusting your makeup while he looked at you in bewilderment “You at least react somehow, otherwise I’m as if talking to a statue” you looked at him in the mirror.
“Great, otherwise I was afraid that I would have to be a babysitter. Tell me your number, I'll send you the schedule. What will you be doing, I need to know in order to answer my parents if they ask" He was not sure he wanted to know for an answer or because he really wanted to know what you would be doing.
"It does not matter. They should think that I am dragging everywhere with you. If I had said that I came here for work, they would not have let me go. "
"Work? Do you know anything other than making life difficult for others?" He chuckled. You took your black stilettos out of your bag and changed your shoes, stuffing your sneakers in your bag. In heels, you looked even sexier. Damn, what is he thinking about?
"Did you come up with a joke yourself or did you find it on the Internet?" you looked at him. "Anyway, let's keep avoiding each other." You said pretendingly smiling “Bye“ you took your bag and went to the exit “Btw...” you stopped near the door, turned and looked at him “Your face is my style” you winked and went out the door, leaving him standing in the middle of the hall with open mouth.
“What a crazy...” he muttered and sat down on the sofa. After receiving the message, he pulled out his phone.
Thank you, sonny. I was afraid that you would send someone else for meet _______. I love you.
He continued to look at your joint photo from the airport, he did not even pay attention to the fact that he was smiling so broadly at that moment. You were smiling too, you seemed so happy and friendly in this photo. He caught himself smiling all this time while looking at your photo. He closed his eyes, leaning on back, as he expected, as soon as you appear next to him, you can say "bye" in his quiet life.

Thanks God, neither his parents nor yours were persistent. Five days passed, and they never called or wrote. As like you ... why all this time he couldn't stop thinking about you. He should have been glad that he didn't need to take care of you, but why then did he not feel it. He was interested in what you were doing, where you were and who you were with. You sent him your schedule, if he could call it that, it was a list of dates marked 'busy' and 'free'. He took out his phone and opened your message, you were free today. For today, his schedule is over and he may invite you to dinner, although it might be too weird. Or not ... you still need to spend time together.
I'm free tonight and not even in a terrible mood, so I can sacrifice my evening and spend it with you.
It seemed to work out naturally, he laughed, rereading his sent message. He got a reply that made him practically growl.
I pass. There are more interesting plans.
An unbearable girl, he muttered, shoving the phone into his pocket.
"Everything okay?" asked Jaebeom, who was sitting next to him.
"Yes, everything is great. By the way, we are already free today and have not hung out together for a long time, besides, tomorrow is a day off. Shall we have a party? " he raised his voice to attract the attention of Jinyoung and Jackson, who were sitting in front.
Everyone made a noise, agreeing to his suggestions, discussing where to go. “How fortunate that we didn't wash off our makeup after the photoshoot. Maybe a club? " Jinyoung smiled broadly and everyone laughed.
"GREAT! A party!" clapped Jackson.
“It’s just worth changing. Unlike our faces, our clothes don't really fit the club.” He said while examining them, and everyone laughed again.
After three hours, they finally drove to the club. Turned out to "change clothe for the club" took longer than he could have imagined. They drove into the indoor club's underground parking lot, which was only allowed by invitation. It was the only place where celebrities could relax and have a good rest without worrying about going out in the morning millions of articles with incriminating photographs. All phones and other gadgets must be lefted at the guard at the entrance. They went inside behind the manager who escorted them to the table. Great, he thought, sitting down at the table. Their table was in a place where they could see everyone, but their no one saw. He looked around the hall sipping his drink while the others discussed everyone around.
“Wow who is this? Haven't seen her before" Jackson said, pointing to the middle of the dance floor. He and Jaebeom turned their heads and he froze wide-eyed when he saw you.
"Is it not a ..?" Jaebeom said with surprise
"Yeah, she is ..." he replied staring at the way you dance. What were you doing here? A thousand questions were spinning in his head.
"Do you know her?" asked Jinyoung, looking at you with interest too.
“Yes, we know” he and Jaebeom simultaneously answered
Some guy came up to you, beginning to dance next to you, obviously trying to meet you. He didn't even notice that his fists were tightening because of it. You smiled at the guy and turned away from him, you were clearly not interested in him. He couldn't deny that he was pleased with it. Unlike this guy who continued to persistently dance next to you and flirt, not wanting to accept your refusal. His jaw tightened and he got up abruptly from the table, heading to the dance floor, when this guy ran down your back and stopped his hand on your ass. He froze when a moment later you turned and twisted the guy's wrist, forcing him to kneel in front of you. He smiled broadly, continuing to walk towards you, apparently martial arts classes were not in vain. He came up to you and grabbed the guy by the collar with force, bringing him back to his feet.
"Are there no more shorter things in your wardrobe?" he asked, giving you a skeptical look.
You tilted your head to the side, looking at him in surprise "Do you really want to discuss the length of my dress now, daddy?!" you asked sarcastically. The way you called him daddy caused a wave of desire in his body. Stop, he was distracted, he kinda angry on you.
I'll be right back and we'll discuss your ‘more interesting plans’!” he said, pointing at you with his finger before dragging the jerk towards the guards. “Throw this garbage out of here, he was touching my friend, although she clearly refused him several times before,” he said when he saw a guard he knew. After the changes, this guy was escorted to the exit, and he returned to the dance floor. “We need to talk,” he said. taking your hand and dragging you towards the back exit, where the quiet zone was.
“Mark, let me go. Where are you dragging me?!" you kept trying to get out all the way. He closed the door behind him so that no one would disturb them when you entered the VIP room.
"What are you doing here and why do you look like this?"
"I look like?" you stared at him
"Like…"
"Like who?" you asked angrily, and you were right, your long-sleeved dress reached almost mid-thigh and was completely covered. But it hugged your beautiful figure, driving him crazy, wanting to run his hands along your curves.
“This dress is too short. What are you doing here? "He said the first thing that crossed his mind.
“You are not my older brother or parents to tell me where to be and how to dress” you shouted at him and you were right. But why was it so angry then that instead of having dinner with him, you chose to go to the club. Why now the only thing he could feel was excitement. "What's wrong with you ?!"
"Everything !!! Everything is wrong with me! Every time you appear in my life everything goes awry! ”
“Excuse me, what? Oh god damn sorry your fucking life is disturbed by my presence, Mr. Perfect Guy! ” you walked up to him poking your finger into his chest with every word.
"Shut up!" he screamed at you, no longer able to control his emotions
"Oh, no really ... let's hear how I destroyed your ..." He grabbed you, pressing you firmly against his body, closing your mouth with a kiss. It seemed that his brain was disabled because he absolutely did not understand what he was doing now. You tried to pull away from him, but he tightened his grip on your hair, deepening that killer kiss. Everything inside him turned upside down, plunging him into an all-destructive fire, not giving the slightest hope of salvation. He enjoyed too much, the sensation of your curves under his fingers, the sweet taste of your kiss, to think about the consequences.
He ran his hands down your back, squeezing your ass and pressing your body against his hard cock. You pushed him hard, causing him to lose his balance falling on the couch behind him. You left the room without even looking in his direction. He fell back on the couch, covering his face with his hands. “Congratulations, moron! You just ruined everything, "he growled, scolding himself. What was that all about. He thought he surprised himself more than you, in the moment he kissed you. How the thought that 'maybe he likes you' turned into a 'destructive passion', from which he could not control himself. But even more frightened him that if you had not pushed him away, he would not have been able to stop himself only with kisses. He pounded his fists hard on the couch before getting to his feet and headed towards exit.
"Have not seen _______?" he asked Jaebeom whom he bumped in the hallway.
“Oh, yes I saw her. She said goodbye, said that she was already leaving because tomorrow is a busy day. Weren't you together? It seems like you left together ... "Jaebeom looked at him in surprise
"Yes together. Well, I told you, she doesn't tell me anything except rudeness "he quickly changed the subject
“I don’t know, with me she’s always cute when we talk.” Jaebeom shrugged.
“That you only saw twice in total less than five minutes, of course she’s cute with you,” he laughed
"Not only when we meet, when we talk on the phone, too sweet"
"By phone?" his eyes widened
"Well yes. We exchanged numbers on the first day while we went down to the parking lot together. She told me to tell her how you are doing, because 'that angry ass, still won't write to her.'
“You seem to know more about her than I do. Maybe then you know what kind of job? " he could not hide that it made him angry
"Yes, she is a model, but her parents are against it, so I had to lie that she was going on vacation."
"I see you are almost the best friends!" he said through clenched teeth, and Jaebeom looked at him questioningly, “I don’t feel myself well, say goodbye to the guys for me. See you" he said as he walked past Jaebeom towards the exit.
He went outside breathing in the cool air. Taking his phone out of his pocket, he dialed your number "Where are you?" he asked when you answered.
"What is it to you?" you snorted into the phone
"Let's talk"
“ 'Let's talk' , or are you going to accuse me of all mortal sins again, and then you’ll kiss me?”
"Where are you?" his tone became calm and soft, least of all now he wanted to quarrel with you
"In a 7eleven a couple of blocks from the club," you answered by hanging up. When he reached the store, a wide smile lit up his face. You sat in a chair and dangled your legs with chopsticks in your mouth, waiting for the ramen to be ready. Now you looked like that the fidget he knew. Going into the store, he bought himself food and a few bottles of beer and after paid for everything, he went to you.
“Models have an interesting diet. Ramen, gimpab, kimchi and beer. Waaaaaa, and this is at one o'clock in the morning ... " he chuckled, putting his food next to yours, sitting down on a nearby chair.
"Who would say," you said took the chopsticks out of your mouth, examining his set. "When I'm angry, I always want spicy ramen," you said smiling broadly, stirring the noodles.
He laughed when you spat the noodles back out because you burned your tongue. "What a ninny" he said laughing. Tearing off your lid from the ramen, he made an envelope and stuck it into your hand. “Even children can eat ramen without burning their tongues. You take some noodles, put them in an envelope, blow on them and then eat them. " he brought chilled noodles to your mouth. “Eat” he said, placing a slice of kimchi on top.
"Yummy" you smiled, chewing on noodles and bouncing in your chair with happy. What a cutie, he thought, watching you.
He opened the beer and put it in front of you, swapping it with your closed “Here, drink”
“I could have opened it by myself,” you furrowed your eyebrows
“Yeah, that's why it's closed. Probably you almost broke all your nails while trying to open the can" he took your hands, turning towards him, examining your manicure.
You turned back and drank a sip of beer returned to the noodles "Did you come to watch on me or eat?" you said pointing to his food.
“Eat more slowly, otherwise your stomach will ache,” he smiled and you laughed
“From trying to fuck me, you went to worrying about my stomach. You never cease to amaze me today "you spoke so calmly about it that everything inside him turned into a tight knot
"I didn't try you ..." he couldn't even finish the sentence
“Okay. As you say" you got up and came to the bin throwing out the trash. "So what did you want to talk about?" You asked when you returned to your place.
“I ... About what happened in the club” he looked at his beer, unable to meet your gaze
“So...” you answered, and he stared at you in bewilderment, “What? It's you wanted to talk,” you raised the can of beer while taking a sip
"Don't you worries about that?" he asked you
“It pissed me off - yes, it worries me - not really. Does it worries you? "
"Yes, it worries me!" he looked at you with wide eyes
"Why?" you looked at him in surprise and leaned forward, getting too close “Mark, I'm not 12 years old. Even if you fucked me, it would have happened not because I could not resist you, but because I did not mind it" you whispered in his ear. “And here is my taxi” you got up from the chair pointing to the black car. “See you” you said and left, leaving him alone.
All he could do, was look at the leaving car. “Great talk,” he muttered, tossing untouched food and beer into the bin.

These few days he was more like a robot that does everything that is told to him. He stared out the window at the lights as his manager drove him home. The head was empty, or vice versa, there were so many thoughts in it that the brain stopped responding to them, simply mute it. Saying goodbye to the manager, he went into the house. You had the weekend ahead, maybe he should call you, he thought as he took the elevator to his floor. In all the case, you have to meet. He was staring at his door when he heard soft music playing from his apartment. Some of the guys came to visit without warning him, he thought, entering the code. His stomach rumbled with the smell of delicious food as he came in. "Whoever you are, I won't kill you just because of the delicious food," he said loudly, walking into the living room. He stopped when he saw you sitting on the couch. "What are you doing here?" he was completely taken aback by your presence, you were the last person he expected to see in his house.
“Is this your favorite question? Why do you keep asking it every time you see me? " you asked getting up from the couch. “I didn't know what you like, so I chose meat and wine” you went into the kitchen and turned off the oven, took out baked meat with vegetables and put it on the table.
"_______, what are you doing here?" he asked again because you ignored his question
"Preventing a zombie apocalypse?" you smiled while handing him a glass of wine
"What?" he frowned at the fact that he could not understand if he heard you correctly, "You just said zombie apocalypse?"
"Yes. Jaebeom said I turned you into a zombie. Since you are patient zero, you can still be saved. Probably. Judging by the symptoms and incoherent speech, you are doomed.” You went up to him, raised his hand and gave him a glass of wine, which he had not taken before.
"Really? Are we talking about zombies now? " he stares at you “I think I’m going crazy,” he muttered, drinking all the wine in one gulp. "Why are you here?" he stepped closer, placing the empty one on the table.
“Make a selfie for parents” you raised your phone and opened the camera. He pushed your hand away, causing your phone to fall to the floor.
“If you needed a photo, you would meet on somewhere alse, and not cook dinner with wine at my place!”
“You’re right,” you said with a malicious smile, brushing a lock of hair from his forehead. This angered him even more and he grabbed your hand with force, stopping you.
"Why are you here?" he screamed at you. He did not even understand how a moment later he found himself lying on his back with his hands pressed to the floor.
“Finish what you started” you said, digging into his lips.
His body reacted faster than his brain and he pressed your body against his, deepening the kiss. Rolling over, he was on top of you. He moaned as your legs wrapped around his waist, forcing him to rub his cock against your crotch. Pulling back for a moment, he tore his shirt violently, getting rid of it, not wanting to waste time for unbuttoning. Unbuttoning his jeans, he pulled them down to his hips. He lifted your skirt around your waist, ripping off your panties, pushing inside your pussy. He dug into your lips again, covering your mouth with a kiss as you screamed. He gripped your body tightly as you tried to pull away from him. He pushed hard at you all its length, causing your body to arched under him. He growled as you squeezed his dick hard. His head was spinning with pleasure, blurring the line between reality and ecstasy. He came out of you and pushed into you again with force. Your body relaxed with each deep thrust, making him want more and more pleasure. He pulled your blouse with force, getting rid of it, giving him access to your bare skin. He ran his tongue over your collarbone before biting it with his teeth. You hissed, digging your nails into his bare back. He abruptly left you and got to his feet, dragging you by the hand. He lifted you into his arms, pressing you against the wall again making a hard push into you. You hugged his shoulders tightly as he dug into your lips. This kiss was dizzying, revealing to you everything he felt now. Tenderness changed with passion and vice versa. It was crazy, he lost track of time.
It seemed to him that all eternity had passed, or maybe only five minutes. His moans mingled with yours as everything inside him raged, bringing him closer to orgasm. A wave of heat passed down his back, dropping down as you squeezed his dick hard, cumming hard. He wanted to hear as long as possible how you moan his name dissolving into your orgasm. His thrusts into you hardened, it seemed that something inside him snapped, releasing a wild beast that he was trying to hold back all this time. His fingers and teeth dug into your skin, leaving red marks on it. The more he fucked you, the more he wanted. His orgasm was like the horizon, which receded with each step towards it. Your body trembled violently in his hands with every thrust. He buried himself in your neck, hiding his smile. He growled loudly as he cum, filling you with sperm. The pleasure was almost painful, tearing everything inside him into small pieces. He continued to make shallow thrusts inside you, prolonging his pleasure, until he came to himself with intense pleasure. He put you on your feet, resting his hands on the wall and left a gentle kiss on your lips. He ran his hand over your body and laughed softly as you groaned while closing your eyes.
"Aren't you hungry?" you asked looking at the table with untouched food
“I'm terribly hungry. Let's continue?" he sank down and hugged your legs tightly, throwing you over his shoulder and heading for the bedroom.
"Oh my god ..." you moaned
"Sorry, babygirl, but he can hardly save you tonight" he slapped your ass and you giggled as he walked into the bedroom, closing the door behind him.
... ... ...
“You know that you look like a maniac when you smile like that?” Jackson said as he sat down opposite him. “At first you walk like a zombie for several days, now you giggle almost every second. Tell me honestly, have you lost your mind?"
He laughed at Jackson's words, it must have looked like that from the side. “No, I'm completely fine. I was treated to a delicious dinner.” He smiled broadly recalling that night. Dinner was really delicious, even though you ate it in the morning. He threw his head back on the sofa and closed his eyes, remembering how you yelled at him, saying that now you have to take a bath of bb cream, because your whole body was in red marks from his fingers and teeth. I miss you, he thought to himself. He has not seen you for several days, and why in the last days you have had more work than him. He opened his eyes when sounded a phone notification. He took his phone out of his pocket and laughed as he read the message from you. Oh yes, this is what he wanted to hear now:
I'm not hungry. Let's have dinner?

“Love Me Please is a biography in comics of the amazing rock singer Janis Joplin, which recalls, respecting the chronology, the highlights of her journey from childhood, after the Second World War, to her abrupt death in late 1970.It is one of the most fabulous musical adventures in America n the second half of the twentieth century. Yet it lasted only five years. How did a very young messed up woman, a drug addict filled with doubt, become in a few years a planetary icon of rock music? She went from the shadows to the blinding light of fame in only four records (the last one issued a month and a half after her tragic death). Thanks to a worldwide movement of emancipation which would consecrate for a long time the ideals and modes of alternative lifestyles from counterculture to the flower power generation, Janis, the ugly duckling, gave free rein to her impulses. Fed by the thirst for freedom of the Beat Generation and the desire for emancipation expressed by American youth in the early 1960s, Janis Joplin left for San Francisco, the epicenter of cultural innovation. She will live there a freedom of which she would hardly have dared to dream, abandoning herself to all impulses, overcoming without hesitation all the taboos of the time: bisexuality, alcohol, drugs, doing so not only with delight, but with the taste for excess which came naturally from her spontaneous character. A lively, fascinating story of a woman ahead of her time.”

☕ Night Shift 🍰
Tumblr media
Genre: Slice of Life, Romance, Comedy, Fluff  Rating: PG-13 Warnings: mentions of blood, Taehyung surprising the snot out of you Pairing: Taehyung x reader Notes: vampire!taehyung AU. Single quote marks ‘ ‘ are for thoughts and double “ “ are for talking. Additional Notes: Requested by the lovely @temptaestions hope you enjoy it, dear! ^u^
Summary: Life with a vampire boyfriend was interesting. But you wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Life with a vampire was interesting. Still is.
Not all of the cheesy myths are true, though. The only way they sparkle is if you dump a jar full of glitter on them. They can eat normal foods that mortals eat but it tastes quite bland to them; often even tasteless. Vampires can walk in the sunlight but it makes them incredibly tired. In fact, if a night crawler were to be exposed out in the direct sunlight for too long, they could risk passing out or going on a hunger killing spree.
How do you know all of this? Well........funny story......
Your boyfriend is a vampire. Has been for several years, even before you met him. You’ll never forget how you found out. It was actually quite early on when you two first met. It was a Sunday morning and you had to be up super early for an event you were catering for. Your boyfriend, who at the time was just a friend, offered to help you. He claimed to be great with desserts.
Well......That was fine and all.......till you answered your apartment door only to discover that you friend.......had red eyes.
Now----Most people would say ‘Oh those are just the cool colored contacts that the kids are into these days.’ But there was something awfully.......authentic about these contacts. When you had made a comment about his cool looking lenses, you watched his face freeze up and his eyes go wide. That right there was enough to tell you they weren’t contacts. So if they weren’t fake red eyes......then that could mean only one thing.
So the two of you sat down and he explained that he had been in such a hurry to come over and help you, that he had forgotten to put in his brown colored lenses. That’s when you found out he was a vampire. That’s when everything changed. Finally, all the odd quirks he had made total and complete sense. His peculiar habits were no longer considered strange.
The two of you started to hang out more and as you did so, you began to learn things about him that the rest of the world was not to know. Due to your day job, you could really only spend the evenings with him which worked out great.....till you’d come home exhausted and end up falling asleep on him while he was wide awake. Even on your days off, it was rough because the sunlight made him sleepy. It was like the universe was trying to keep the two of you apart. Till one day, Taehyung made a suggestion.
“What if we worked the night shift somewhere?”
You looked up from your phone as the two of you sat there on the couch in your apartment. Actually.....he had been staying the night an awful lot. Not that you minded. He was a good friend and never tried to pull anything while you were sleeping or resting. In fact, he was quite doting of you. Always pampering you once you got home from your intensive catering job; claiming that they didn’t pay you enough for all the bull crap you endured.
In fact, while you were out working during the day, he’d stay in your apartment and do house chores. Since he wasn’t in direct sunlight, the daytime hours didn’t effect him nearly as bad. He’d have to take naps in between chores but honestly you were just touched he even wanted to make the effort. It was extremely sweet of him.
“Night shift?”
Taehyung lit up with a bright boxy smile, fangs and all, as he nodded his shaggy head eagerly and explained,
“Yeah! We could work together and that way we can rest together during the day. We’d get to see more of each other even though we’re working. It’s better than nothing.”
On one hand, he had a point. It would be nice to spend more time with him rather than him watching you sleep off a hard day’s work just to wake up the next morning and do it all over again. But then you wondered how would your life look if you worked night time hours? Would this pan out? Could you make it happen? Your pale friend spoke up once more as he said,
“There’s a 24 hour food place in town that’s looking for night workers. I could work in the kitchens and you could bus tables. It’d be great!”
You sat there and thought about it. In fact, there was quite a bit to think about. Being an adult was tough sometimes. You had to look at everything from all angles, evaluate all the pros and cons of the situation. You couldn’t just dive into something for fear of the consequences.
Pay. The pay had to be at least what you were making now. You had always heard that waiters and waitresses made most of their money from tips. So perhaps you’d end up making more than what you were being paid now. And since you catered, you already had the experience of waiting on people. Perhaps this could work...... And so with a warm smile, you set your phone down and said,
“Yeah. Let’s do it. Let’s go apply.”
“Sweet! Let’s go! Before someone else snags them instead.”
“Yah, Tae! Don’t forget your contact lenses!”
It was a bit of a mess at first, but the two of you finally got ready and looked presentable and headed out in search of this dream team job of yours. The man who had become your best friend was dressed nicely and kept his true nature hidden very well. You wondered if he’d be able to handle all the heart beats in such a small area for so long. But he had made an excellent point when you brought it up.
“It’s the night shift, cutie. There won’t be hardly anyone there. Especially when there are so many other food places to choose from. It’ll be fine. This will work out. You’ll see.”
“We have to actually get the jobs first, TaeTae. How can you be so certain they’ll even pick us?”
But all you got in response was a sly smile. Your best guess was that your friend had something up his sleeve. Perhaps he was going to use his good looks and charming smile to get you guys in? Then again.....Taehyung really did have a nice smile and he really was good looking. You blushed and felt your heart do a small flip at the thought. If Tae had heard, he never commented. Which you were grateful for.
The place he was talking about was not quite walking distance but it wasn’t far of a drive either. In fact, you’d already be saving money in gas expense with how long it took the two of you to drive there. Thankfully the sun was setting and Taehyung didn’t have to wear a hat or anything. But you did catch him rubbing at one of his eyes. He had mentioned that the contacts sometimes made his eyes itch. You felt really bad about that. Poor guy. He did so much for you.
Upon arriving after finding a decent parking spot on the street, you immediately liked the outside of the place. It screamed cozy and smelled of comfort food; even from outside. Smiling brighter than you realized and suddenly feeling a lot more confident about this whole thing, you found yourself naturally taking Taehyung’s hand in yours and walking through the doors.
If Taehyung wasn’t a vampire, he would have blushed.
Gosh the place was even cozy on the inside too! You could already see yourself working here and being happy. After all, you wanted the simple life. A nice job that paid your bills while still being able to live within your means. That’s all you wanted. The catering job you had right now......well......Life was anything but simple when you had to work for that company.
“Good evening. Just two?”
So engrossed in your thoughts of your current crappy job, you almost didn’t catch what the young woman in front of you had said. She was petite and really pretty. Perfectly sculpted eyebrows and a perfect set of lips. Granted, you weren’t the most prettiest girl out there but man this one made you feel like the ugly duckling. But she seemed really nice.
“Uhh......”
“Actually, we’d like to apply for the two night shift openings you have here.”
Thank god for Kim Taehyung. Seriously. There you were standing there like a bump on a log and he yet again came to your rescue. As the young woman smiled and excused herself to go get the applications for employment, you immediately ducked your head and felt the heat radiating off your cheeks. Feeling incredibly embarrassed, you mumbled,
“Thanks, Tae. You’re always saving my butt. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
Before the moment could get too deep, the young woman came back and politely explained a few things while handing the both of you an application. She explained that they had a few other applicants already but that there was still plenty of time to put your hats into the ring. It was then that your vampire friend spoke up and said sweetly,
“We’ll be right back. We’re just going to step outside to fill these out real quick.”
“Oh you don’t have to do that. You guys can sit right over there and fill them out if you’d like. It’s pretty slow right now so there’s plenty of tables. Please. Have a seat and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give me a shout.”
Despite being really pretty, you could tell this girl was genuinely nice. Perhaps even humble and down to earth. Smiling and feeling much better now that your blush had died down, you both took a pen and sat at the table. This was really happening. You were taking your first big step into living a better life. But that was of course under the impression you got picked. What if you didn’t even get an interview???
“Cutie. Relax. Your heart sounds like it’s going to pound right out of your chest.”
“Aish. Sorry, Tae. I’m just really nervous. What if we don’t get picked? Or what if you get picked but I don’t?”
Your pout faced off with his sly smile as he gently shook his head and said in a soft whisper,
“I told you, don’t worry about that. I’ve got this. We’ve got this. We’re a package deal, okay?”
Gosh this man was going to be the end of you. How could one person be so incredibly sweet? Furthermore, how did you wind up so lucky to have him in your life? It was beyond you but the gratefulness was still there.
With renewed confidence, the both of you sat there and filled out your applications. You stated in yours that you were applying for the waiter/waitress position while Taehyung noted down that he was applying for the kitchen. It felt great to put down that you had experience seeing as how you worked for a catering company. Taehyung, having lived for so many years, was great in the culinary arts.
“Here they are, miss. If you could, could you just take a look over them to make sure we filled everything out correctly? We’d really appreciate it.”
The moment the vampire’s skin touched the female’s it was like things got....weird. You watched the young woman look over the applications as if she were in a trance of some kind. Your eyebrows furrowed and you itched to look over at your pale friend but resisted. Something was up. After taking a few extra minutes to look over the paperwork, the young woman cleared her throat and said lightly,
“Wow. You guys are definitely qualified. I’ll make sure you both get an interview.”
Wait what???
“Thank you, miss. That means a lot to us. We’ll be eagerly awaiting your phone call.”
Just like that, you were half way there. Your mind was blown as you faintly felt Taehyung helping escort you out of the restaurant and across the street to where your car was parked. Numbly, you unlocked the vehicle and the two of you climbed inside to buckle up. Sitting there still staring off into space, you mumbled,
“What just happened?”
“We’re one step closer to getting you a better job and spending more time with each other. That’s what just happened.”
You looked over to see the pale man smiling his signature boxy smile while wiggling his eyebrows in a cheesy, greasy fashion. It was enough to snap you out of your stunned stupor and you instantly started to giggle. Blushing lightly and playfully swatting at him, you said in amusement,
“You’re terrible. What did you do? Bewitch her or something?”
“Maybe? Does it really matter?”
Silence filled the car as the two of you had a small stare down. It was odd seeing him with the brown contacts in. In all actuality, you preferred his red eyes. His natural ruby red orbs. Just as you were about to start the car, he said suddenly but softly,
“I’d do anything for you.”
Within two days, you both got the call giving you a date and time for your interviews. Even though the young woman had claimed she’d make sure you guys got that far, you never actually believed her. You’d never forget squealing and jumping all around your apartment while Tae just laughed and watched you from the couch. Seeing you happy was all he really wanted. If he could have just one wish, it was to see you happy.
But that happiness......was short lived.
It was three days later and you came home bawling your eyes out. Taehyung had just went to bed after seeing you off for work that morning. He had a few chores around the apartment that he’d do for you later when the sun would start to go down but first he’d nap since the sun was pretty intense today. However, he had only just gotten comfortable in the spare bedroom that was practically his now, when he heard the door slam open.
With his vampire traits kicking into high gear, he was down the hallway and back out into the living room in the blink of an eye. The sight broke his heart despite it having not functioned for hundreds of years. Frowning deeply, he helped you out of your shoes and gently walked you to the couch where he sat you down. A gentle hand rubbed at your back as he waited for you to tell him what happened.
“Fired???”
“Yes, Tae. They fired me. They had this planned all along. I walked in and they handed me this paycheck and told me I was free to go.”
On one hand, the vampire was overjoyed to see you get out of that hell hole of a catering company. For as long as he had known you, which was going on two years now, they had never once treated you the way you deserved. You worked so hard and was so underappreciated. However, seeing you this upset killed him. It felt like a knife was twisting his insides all to hell and back.
Needless to say, the two of you spent the day in bed. Taehyung had convinced you that this waitress job was as good as yours and so now would be the perfect opportunity to start getting your sleeping schedule in order. Sleep and rest during the day so that you could be awake and functioning at night. It was hard to fall asleep at first, the whole reality of being unemployed still shaking you to the core, but with Taehyung’s help you were able to sleep like a baby.
It was the night before the interviews and the two of you were just sitting and chilling watching some cheesy kdrama. You were munching on popcorn while Tae was sipping on a tumbler full of blood. At first, you thought living with a vampire would be tough. In all actuality, it wasn’t that different from having any other kind of roommate. Taehyung was super clean, respectful, and he was your best friend. You couldn’t have asked for a better roommate.
But sometimes.......your curious nature got the better of you.
“TaeTae......Have you ever wanted to taste my blood?”
When all you heard was a muffled noise, you looked over to see the male in the middle of a sip from his cup to which he was scrambling not to spit out. You certainly caught him by surprise and while the thought of having blood spat all over your living room should have grossed you out, it actually amused you more than anything. The look on his face was quite comical.
“Well I um......Well.....I mean....Um.....I mean yeah of course I have.”
But he quickly added after safely setting the tumbler down on the coffee table and turning to face you, his expression completely sincere despite speaking a bit frantically,
“But I would never do that. You’re my best friend, not a walking blood bag. I see you as a person and not as food. I would never use you like that. That’s why I’ve never brought up the topic of blood donors.”
The nanosecond the term ‘blood donor’ left his mouth, Taehyung could have cursed himself ten times over. Way to go, blockhead. Mentally cursing himself, he watched your face as it twisted and turned into an expression of further curiosity. With raised eyebrows, you naturally asked in all innocence,
“What’s a blood donor?”
“It’s noting, cutie. Forget I said anything.”
“But Taaaaaeeee. We tell each other everything! Please! Please please please please please please please please please please pl----”
“Aish! Okay! Okay!”
Your giggles were muffled as he had slapped a hand over your mouth to silence your persistent pleading. He could never deny you no matter how strong of a night crawler he was. You were his number one weakness. He could take on armies of thugs and murder a whole city over night. But when it came to you, he was weak and at your mercy.
That was how you learned what a blood donor was. It was a contractual agreement between the vampire and a willing party. The contract was completely consensual and honestly made perfect sense. While the donor would offer their blood, the vampire would take care of his or her donor almost like a pet. Providing them with shelter, food, water, all of those basic needs. The two would live in perfect harmony.
“Tae.......Why haven’t you ever said anything? I can totally be your donor.”
“No. Absolutely not. This is why I never told you about it in the first place. You deserve to live a normal life. Not a life where you keep a blood sucker like me alive.”
“But Taehyung----”
“No buts. I don’t want to talk about it anymore.”
Despite the pout you were sporting, you respected his wishes and dropped the matter. But it was hard not to think about. Your mind lost focus on the TV and instead you were daydreaming about what it’d be like to be your best friend’s blood donor. What would it feel like when he sunk his fangs into your neck? Would it hurt? Would he have to numb the area first? Would it leave scars on your skin?
When morning came, you decided to take a nap since your interviews would be during the mid afternoon. As you laid there in bed watching the sun rise behind your curtains, you couldn’t help but fall asleep to the image of your super hot best friend sinking his teeth into your neck. Needless to say, you woke up a couple hours later with wet panties and feeling the need to clean yourself twice as thoroughly as you normally would.
The interviews had went smoothly and it looked promising. Although you couldn’t help but wonder if Taehyung had worked his vampire magic because the managers seemed to be awfully impressed with the two of you. After being told you both would get a call if you were chosen, you were once again playing the waiting game. You hated that game.
A couple days went by where you spent the daytime hours sleeping and spent the night hours doing things like paying bills online and getting your affairs in order. Just on the miraculous chance that the two of you get this night shift job.
“Relax, cutie pie. I told you, we got this in the bag.......Uh oh.....”
You had been tidying up around the living room when you heard his nervousness from his spot in the kitchen. Turning to face him, since the apartment was a very open floor plan, you watched him stare tensely into the refrigerator. His body was stiff as a board and you wondered what was wrong. But then it hit you too........There was no blood left in the house.
Save for yours.
“Tae----”
“Nope. Don’t say it.”
“But T----”
“No. We discussed this and it’s out of the question.”
“Kim Taehyung!”
He was shocked when you walked up to him only to punch him in the arm. Of course, he hardly felt it and you probably knew that too, but still. Your actions surprised him all the same. He stared at you with ruby eyes that held a mixture of emotions. Anxiety, sadness, frustration. This was hard for him and you weren’t helping. The temptation had been there forever and he had fought so hard to resist his natural urges as a vampire.
“Taehyung, you do so much for me. You’re my best friend. And best friends are always there for each other. Please.......Please let me do this for you. Let me be your blood donor.”
You had him right where you wanted him. The poor boy was already weakened from the lack of blood so his resolve was already crumbling. With a heavy sigh of defeat, he flicked his wrist and out of thin air, a piece of parchment paper with elegant calligraphy scrawled all over it appeared right in front of you. A couple seconds later, a quill and bottle of ink appeared as well.
You didn’t even have to read over the contract to know you wanted to sign it. So there you stood, in your modest kitchen signing a blood contract with your vampire best friend. Your life may not be that exciting, but Taehyung certainly kept things interesting for you. Something that you were completely okay with.
Life with a vampire was interesting. Still is.
It was then decided that he would go ahead and move in with you. It only made sense and he practically lived here anyway. So you two spent the next two nights and early mornings moving his stuff from his apartment and into yours. As part of the contract, he insisted on paying the rent in full himself but you convinced him to at least go half and half with you. It would be easier once you both got jobs.
“TaeTae.......what if we don’t get the call? What if they’ve already picked someone else?”
“Don’t think like that, babe. The jobs are as good as ours. I’m sure of it.”
The pet names. They had changed quite a bit since your best friend had moved in permanently. As much as it shouldn’t, babe had become your favorite and it never failed to make you blush like a schoolgirl in love. It was hard to control your heart beat as well around him. But fortunately he never commented on it.
Being Tae’s blood donor had went from something intriguing and fascinating, to something of a second nature. It was so natural for you to crane your neck so that he could easily access his favorite spot. Of course, as stated in the contract, he steered clear of major arteries and always kept the ‘transaction’ clean. At first, it hurt. Quite a bit, actually. The first couple times left your neck feeling sore and stiff the next night. But now you were used to it.
Just as your unemployment checks were starting to run out, you were starting to lose hope in the night shift jobs. Taehyung could tell too. Your mood was horrible and you looked like you could be an advertisement for antidepressants. Pouting, he walked over to you and crouched down at your feet with his hands on your knees.
“Let’s go to the restaurant and see if they’ve filled the positions. Maybe they’re just slow in processing?”
Sniffling and rubbing your red rimmed eyes, you nodded and got off the couch. If anything, this trip would at least give you closure so that you could start looking for another job. The trip of course was short since the restaurant wasn’t very far away. Getting a great spot on the street right across from it, you parked the car and headed for the entrance.
Walking in, you saw one of the managers that had interviewed you was standing at the pedestal; ready to seat any customers that would come in. You were nervous; heart pounding in your chest and palms sweaty. What if they had already filled the position? Finally standing in front of her, you offered a shy smile while Taehyung was the one who spoke up in his polite and charming tone.
“Hello there, we were just wondering if the two night shift openings had been filled yet. We haven’t gotten a phone call but we wanted to check in anyway as we’re still very interested in the positions.”
“Oh yes! Actually we were just......”
But then the manager locked eyes with your best friend and again.....something weird was going on as you looked back and forth between the two. Just like the young female employee from weeks ago, the manager appeared as if she were in some kind of trance. Smiling, she suddenly beamed and said happily,
“We were just about to call you both! What a happy coincidence!”
Happy coincidence your butt. Taehyung had done it again. Somehow, someway, he managed to get you two the jobs and it was like everything changed. The following days were full of uniform fittings and lots of human resource paperwork. You had forgotten what all went into getting a job. None the less, you were beyond happy. And that’s all Taehyung ever wanted for you. Was to see you happy.
He would do anything for you.
It was a rough start but you were a quick learner. Mostly getting used to sleeping during the daylight hours and working through the night hours. It was a full time position but thank the good lord you both got weekends off. How you managed that, you weren’t sure. It made things like doctors’ appointments interesting but you managed.
Most importantly of all, you got to spend so much more time with Taehyung. The two of you had quickly formed a little habit of him winking at you whenever he’d ring the bell telling you that an order was ready. It always made you blush and you had to try and cool yourself down before you could reach a customer’s table.
Your best friend had quickly built a name for himself as the months went by. His food was amazing and he always asked the managers if he could put his own little spin on certain dishes because he felt the customers would enjoy it better. And sure enough, the customers were rolling in. Dinner time became the busiest time of the day for the place and the managers noticed.
You weren’t doing too bad yourself. The tips really did make a difference. After your first three months working, you ran the numbers and concluded that you were actually making way more money doing this job than you were when you were still under the thumb of that stupid catering company. It blew your mind. And it was all because of Taehyung. Your best friend. He truly was amazing.
Life with a vampire was interesting. Still is.
You donated your blood and he helped make all your dreams come true. You were more than living within your means. The two of you actually went on small trips together on your days off. Watching the stars where they couldn’t be covered by city lights. You’d spend the daytime hours resting or if you were feeling restless, he’d watch movies with you till you could sleep again. It all felt so......domestic. And you honestly loved it. You thrived in it.
And then one day, while you were just collecting a table’s drink order, your best friend blew everyone out of the water. Including you. You watched him suddenly walk up to you and your face flushed red since he had never done this before. He was to always stay in the back where the kitchen was. But now he stood there in front of you with everyone able to watch.
“Everyone---- I’m sorry. But if I could just have your attention for a moment, please.”
Dear god your face was so hot that you felt like you were going to pass out. What the hell did he think he was doing??? Trying not to scold him right then and there, you watched with a tomato red face as he smiled at you and started to speak.
“I was supposed to wait till our shift was over, but my 15 minute break is coming up and I can’t wait any longer......”
Your heart was pounding in your chest and you could see out of the corner of your eye that your managers were watching too. Dear god. This was it. They were going to fire you both for making such a scene. But your vampire’s voice brought you back to the moment at hand.
“Everyone......this lovely young lady right here is amazing. She’s worked hard to get here. And I think I can speak for everyone when I say she’s great at what she does. Am I right?”
You were shocked to see the collective nods of heads in agreement and some even spoke up with yeah’s and yes’s. It certainly didn’t help your blush any and you ended up shamelessly fanning your face to try and not pass out. Chuckling, he continued as he smiled down warmly at you.
“Today is her birthday and so of course I made her a little something. It’s not much but I am an expert with desserts.”
You along with the rest of the restaurant laughed softly. Taehyung was right, today was your birthday and you had spent it sleeping and getting all the rest you could. But you didn’t care to work on your birthday because it was just another day in your book. Nothing special. But it would seem your best friend was bound and determined to make it special.
“But before I give you your dessert.....which is of course what I’m holding behind my back......I just......want to say a little something.....”
You felt your throat closing up as you wondered what it could possibly be that he had to say to you. Trying to swallow, you watched him nervously bite his bottom lip but was careful not to show his fangs.
“Cutie......Babe........We’ve been by each other’s side for quite a few years now. We live together and life is great with you. Being your best friend is one of the greatest gifts. But.....I’m greedy. I want more. I thought before all I wanted was your happiness. But I quickly realized I want more.”
Dear god what was happening???? Your heart was surly going to explode if he didn’t shut up.
“I want your happiness, but I want to share that happiness.......as your boyfriend. So would you......do me the amazing honor.......of being my girlfriend?”
There was a soft collection of gasps including yours as you stood there nearly dropping everything in your hands; your managers long forgotten about as you stared up at him. Your best friend. He felt......He felt that way about you? It wasn’t your imagination??? You stood there with your mouth agape before one of the customers who you were currently waiting on had gently nudged you and it helped snap you out of your stunned state.
“I----Well I mean of course. I----- We’ve practically been together our whole lives. We might as well be some domestic married couple, honestly.”
And without missing a beat, Taehyung sported his signature boxy smile while strategically hiding his fangs before finally showing you the slice of cake he had prepared just for you.
“Great. Because I was really hoping you’d be my wife too.”
And there it sat perched on top of a pile of whipped cream. A beautiful engagement ring that sparkled under the light of the restaurant. Your eyes turned into dinner plates as you stood there feeling lightheaded. This was really happening. You were staring at a piece of cake with a freaking rock for decoration.
“Well.......what do you say? Will you marry me?”
“Yes! Yes, she’ll marry you!”
You both along with everyone else in the restaurant looked over to see the two managers. It was then that you made the connection. The managers were husband and wife as well. They weren’t going to throw you out. In fact, they were part of the plan all along. They knew what Taehyung had planned for tonight. Your jobs were never in any danger. Of course you wouldn’t learn this till after your shift was over later that next morning.
Speaking of.......
The sun was starting to rise but you could care less as you laid there in your bed. The room darkening curtains were long pulled in for the morning to help block the annoying light. You laid there smiling like an idiot as you stared at your newly husband-to-be. Of course he was sporting one of the most smug smiles you had ever seen him wear.
“You’re a pabo. You could have waited till we didn’t have such a large audience. I was so embarrassed from all the crying I did. Everyone kept asking me questions and I was supposed to be waiting on other tables.”
All he did was laugh softly as you tried to act all grumpy with him. But your vampire knew better. You could never be grumpy with him for long. Grinning, he reeled you in and held you in his strong arms. This was the best. This was your dream. Living the simple life while being perfectly content. You just had no idea that it would require a vampire.
Life with a vampire was interesting. Still is.

Don’t think I am hating on cosmetic surgery
I am an advocate for it if it is done for the right reasons. Not to turn an ugly duckling at 13 and chop half her nose off in a poorly done rhinoplasty. Then all the rest, boobs, jaw shave, chin implant, cheek implants, second then third nose job, possible eye lift before high school graduation.
I worked at a 5 star country club for years and befriended all of these women doing all this stuff so I know a lot about it. I’ve had my boobs done, use botox and filler when I can afford it which has not been since 2016. I have seen overweight alcoholics nearly die with 3 draining tubes fresh out of the hospital where she nearly died after a second boob job and tummy tuck. She was pounding down white russians and taking me into the members bathroom and showing me all of this. There was hardly a female member that didn’t want me to feel them up and they were married. There were also cancer survivors which would have incredible work done.
I’ve seen fresh face lifts, new staples and all the bruising, butt lifts, jaw jobs, most everyone has there jaw broken, you name it, I saw it. Men too.
What was allowed to be done to a young teen is not ok, you wait till your 18 at least. She had that nose done and started bleaching at 13 or 14 maybe 12. Just to try to make her pretty enough for showbiz or snag a rich husband. Don’t know how that happened when she’s bald and was wearing a cheap plastic fake veneer you can buy from the back pages of penthouse.
If you are considering a breast augmentation DO NOT DO IT. It ruined my life and I plan on speaking to groups of girls about what the real cost is if something goes wrong and how my health was fine in 2004, New Years Eve I had a tumor removed from my head. A plastic surgeon did it so I thought WTH, the insurance picked it all up. I showed her a picture of Heidi Klum and ended up with DD’s. Literally the worst choice I have ever made. Heidi’s chest wall is much smaller than mine and that makes a huge difference to achieve that look, with my body type, not achievable.
If you actually read this thank you, and contact me if your thinking of boobs. Seriously, be happy with what you have, your health is the only thing that matters. Beauty is internal, as we see almost everyday with fabulous, gorgeous, confident Kate.

(Disclaimer: treat 1950s articles like they’re RPF/fanfiction. This is from 1960, but it still reads very much like a 50s article)
Photoplay Magazine- July 1960
WHY MILLIE PERKINS HAD TO SETTLE FOR A RUNAWAY MARRIAGE by Elaine Blake
When Millie Perkins and Dean Stockwell slipped off to Las Vegas for a secret marriage just before Easter Sunday, people in Hollywood didn't have the nerve to ask them, "But why the runaway? What's all the hush-hush about?" Hardly anyone knew them intimately enough to ask such personal questions. But they wondered plenty. For if Millie and Dean were older, or anyone of Hollywood's multi-divorced-and-married couples, you could more easily imagine them climbing into his three-year-old Chevy or her tiny English job and casually taking off for the Gretna Green Wedding Chapel in Vegas. But Millie and Dean are young! And though the newspaper stories were as brief and uninformative as this secretive couple themselves, you still read seven very romantic little words. "It was the first marriage for each." First marriage! To any girl that's a big-wedding dream woven of satin and lace, perfumed with flowers, set to organ music whispering in a hushed church till it swells triumphantly for a radiant bride and bridegroom. Mostly this is a girl's dream, a magic charm to keep romance alive forever. It's Her Day, her audience smiling and weeping just a little at the lovely vision coming down the aisle to meet her waiting bridegroom.
Millie had no part of the dream. You could understand Dean's not caring for it - many a male goes through the ordeal only because a girl loves a big wedding and he loves his girl. But Dean loves his girl, too. And wouldn't you expect a little girl from Fair Lawn, New Jersey, to want her family around when she says "I do" to the first love of her life? Why, then, did Millie Perkins, with a great big wonderful family - father and mother, four sisters and a brother - who could have made her wedding the most wonderful, exciting day in her life, settle for slipping off to a secret ceremony like a pair of runaways?
They drove up to Las Vegas just before eleven, that Good Friday morning. Millie was wearing a simple little blue dress. Everything about her is always tiny and unfancy, and her wedding outfit was no exception. But, for Millie, this was quite dressed up - a nice change from her eternal blouse-and-skirt-and-high-socks.
THEY WERE MR. AND MRS.
Their first stop was the Gretna Green, one of the many "marrying chapels" in Vegas and one of the nicest. They told the hostess, Mrs. Anderson, what they wanted in the way of a ceremony - a simple one, naturally. Then they headed immediately for the Clark County Courthouse to take out the license. A Las Vegas newspaperman just chanced by a stroke of luck - his - to be in the County Clerk's office. Hopefully, he followed Millie and Dean to the elevator, asking when and where they were getting married.
"No publicity," Dean said flatly. All further tries got the reporter nothing but a brush-off. What frustration! The only newspaperman on the scene and he was getting nowhere. He pleaded plaintively, "I wish you'd help me!" Dean shook his head, took Millie's arm and walked her away without another word.
Back at the Gretna Green, with the license, they found a minister summoned by the management, the Rev. Alan Robertson, pastor of the Church of Christ. The single-ring ceremony didn't take long. Millie
and Dean, alone with their love, seemed completely unaware that there were no attendants for a girl with four sisters, no best man for a boy with an older brother. No mother smiling through tears, no father choking down a lump.
"I now pronounce you man and wife," the minister said. They were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dean Stockwell, looking into each other's eyes as they spoke a Beverly Hills address for the license to be forwarded to after it was duly recorded. Then, they left town - all this within a few hours. Nobody had seen the star of "Diary of Anne Frank" married to the star of "Compulsion" except a stranger, the chapel hostess.
Secrecy? Hollywood says that Millie's idol is Greta Garbo the Sphinx, and that Dean deals curtly with the press like HIS idol, Marlon Brando. Millie's studio got a taste of the same. All they knew about the marriage was what they read in the papers. Their frantic phone calls finally reached Millie after the weekend, and when they asked, pointblank, "Are you married?" she answered, "My personal life is my own."
But is a passion for privacy all that was back of the slip-away marriage? Hollywood thought not. People who wouldn't dream of asking either of them such an outright blunt question, immediately began asking each other more round-about ones. "Why do you suppose they had to run off like that, dodging reporters, and refusing to say if THEY DID or THEY DIDN'T marry?" For a while, there was even a revival of an old rumor - that this celebrated pair of "loners" were actually married more than half-a-year before, when a top movie columnist reported their secret union from "very reliable sources."
Now, this was all some people needed - Millie and Dean refusing to deny or confirm a new report of a new secret marriage - and the old one was stirred to life. Some began insisting, all over again, that they must have been husband and wife the whole time.
If all the uproar and theory doesn't seem to make sense, neither do most rumor binges in small towns where everybody knows everybody - except the rare handful who REFUSE to be known. Actually nothing could be simpler than to explain Millie's and Dean's kind of wedding, once you accept them not merely as two secretive people, but two highly individual ones.
"LITTLE PEOPLE"
Both are what Millie calls "little people" - meaning they make no pretenses and are sturdily against being pushed into any. And before they fell in love, each had a shattering capacity for loneliness. But right there is a nub of difference. For Dean has known, since childhood, what it is to be so apart from others and so hurt by the apartness that he'd die before he'd let it show. That's loneliness, from way back and deep down.
But Millie was never a hermit girl - not until she came to Hollywood. Home in Fair Lawn, in the tree-shaded house full of lively Perkinses, you couldn't be sad unless you worked at it. "A lot of living went on there" she recalls wistfully, "and I was always part of it." Her chief grief was peering into the mirror and deciding she was the one ugly Perkins. She still isn't sure the duckling has, as yet, made it to swan.
That's a tell-tale symptom. The ground isn't firm under Millie's feet because her big breaks came with luck, not the hard work she believes in. When she left the safe nest for New York, fashion modeling fell
into her lap - someone liked photos he saw of her. It spiraled. Twentieth Century-Fox talent scouts, searching the world for a girl to play Anne Frank, also liked Millie's face in a magazine. They chose her
over 10,000 applicants who wanted to be movie stars, when she didn't particularly want to be one. She came to Hollywood looking fourteen, indeed, in dark knee socks, a rumpled skirt and blouse. These are still her favorite kind of clothes - she's indignant when they're called her "Anne Frank costume."
But she came quivering with fear. She was an amateur, a worrier, the pros were watching for her to fall on her face. She never got over her dread of failure. She cried under pressure, she walked alone. But to those on the set who were patient and kind, she was sweetly courteous. Director George Stevens beame an ideal in the place of her papa, the Merchant Marine officer she used to greet rapturously after each sea trip when she was home. Dodie Heath, who became Millie's friend while both were in the "Anne Frank" cast, loved her for the gentleness that many mistook for weakness - till they found she couldn't be stepped on.
Dodie told a writer, "When Millie finds someone who understands her, she gets all excited." Prophetic words. For when she met Dean, they both found understanding. And this he had been groping for all his life. From then on they walked together. They shared the outdoors, on a sailboat, on horseback, anywhere away from people and night clubs. They sprawled in secluded grassy fields and read to each other. And they talked - about everything in both their worlds. Millie even confided how sad it was for a little girl to be an ugly duckling. She didn't care that girls never admit to ugliness, past, present or future.
Anyway, Dean topped her. He said, "It's worse to be such a pretty little boy that the kids you want to play with laugh in your face. You're different - a child actor, and that's a terrible thing to be!" At six, Dean was a stage veteran starting a film career in "Anchors Aweigh." He worked too hard and played too little, till at sixteen he'd completed high school and more than twenty pictures for M-G-M. Then he rebelled.
"I'm through with all this," he told his mother and older brother Guy. "I'm going to college. I don't know what I want to be - but I want to be something." A year at Berkeley, and the "apartness" got under his skin again. He felt he'd always be "that actor" or "that conceited ham." Restless, unfulfilled, he took off for anonymity. As "Rudy Stocker" he wandered to find himself. He did everything from lugging office mailsacks, in New York, to driving railroad spikes in Texas. After a few years, satisfied he could live by the sweat of hard labor, he came back - first to the New York stage, to co-star in "Compulsion," then to Hollywood. And eventually to meet and fall in love with Millie Perkins.
THEY'RE YOUNG - BUT WISE
The mixed-up rebel was a man now, and Millie saw this in him; leaned on him for strength. She worried with him, wept on him, laughed with him, shared his quiet times with music and books, his exciting times in the big outdoors. Dean had been close to other girls, but never one like Millie. He listened to her joys and troubles, comforted and praised her, poured out his own complicated heart to her - and never, never tried to change her.
"This is my girl," he introduced her at his birthday party, where she showed up in the same old kind of skirt and blouse - and the others were all so dressed! He kissed her and said, "My girl looks different from any other - because she IS different." He loves her exactly as she is and doesn't want to change her.
This is the all-accepting love that Millie never wrote her family back home about; they read it for themselves in the columns. Friends said then, "Millie isn't sure how the Perkinses will take it, they being Catholic and the boy Jewish." They described the pictured fragment of the Ten Commandments framed and hanging over Dean's fireplace, and the Torah, the Hebrew Law, among his books.
But if difference of religion finally prompted them to go off to Vegas, secretly, and be married by a Protestant pastor, that's only part of it. The whole story is that Millie and Dean have something together far more important to them then religion, family, career, anybody or anything.
They're young, but wise. They know love is something you can't describe in words that anybody but your own beloved will truly understand. And suppose, not understanding, your family or studio or friends disapprove? They can't stop you, not when you're of legal age. But to two sensitive people, criticism of their best, dearest treasure would be harsh as a rough finger bruising a petal.
No, say the few people who really know Millie Perkins and Dean Stockwell, they took no chances. They thought about how they felt toward each other, and decided it WAS their own and very precious. That was why they ran away - to protect their love.

Chapter One - Great Expectations
(A.N.: You wanted more, you got more! This was proofread lovingly by my bestie @walkingmajority , and if u don’t follow her already go do so if U want quality content! 💖. Questions, comments, and constructive criticism are always welcomed! Anywho, happy reading!)
If one had ever worked in a rice field, they’d know it was torture. The blood red Sanguine sun lashing down on you like a master cracking a whip across your back, made one want to work faster so they could run and escape the heat’s blows. Melior would’ve loved for nothing more than to run and hide under a tree, but he had to work, as his father had woken up with a stomach illness this morning, leaving him to collect the seemingly endless stalks. He heaved his sack over his shoulder with what he had collected from this section, then continued to trudge along, his sandaled feet now muddy from the recently drained paddy.
He cursed as his footing left him, and he fell face first into the mud, his sack and straw hat flying from his head and his hands. The stout, tall young man stood quickly, dusting his yukata of the stinking mud. A familiar, grating voice began to laugh as he struggled to recollect his fallen rice stalks.
“Always working, Melior! How do you plan on being a mantle holder at this rate?” A voice sang out from the tree across the field. The young man furrowed his brows, pulling dark coarse hair into a lazy ponytail, retying on his now muddy sugegasa, glaring up at the tall trees branches.
“At least some of us do work, Chaim.”
And with that, a lithe young man with glinting eyes and a pearly grin swung down to the ground, standing triumphantly as Melior rolled his eyes. Typical Chaim, always posturing and posing.
“Don’t you have girls to be bothering?” Melior sneered, although his smile told of his lighthearted jab.
“Well, I’m bothering you, aren’t I?” He retorted, snagging the hat off Melior’s head and placing it upon his own.
“Aiiyah, give that back!” He growled, grabbing at the sugegasa and narrowly missing the straw brim.
“Why wear this, Mel? You’re darker than us all, you wouldn’t burn.”
This was true, as Melior was not a full-blooded Sanguineum. Rather, he was half Ferali, with almost glowing black eyes and coarse dark hair, skin tinted the shade of the dark sand the Fera people lived in. Melior’s mother had been a survivor of a Sanguineum holocaust on the Ferali people, and narrowly escaped genocide to tell the tale.
She fell in love with the son of the soldier who saved her from being used as target practice as a child, and the rest was history. Regardless of how heartwarming his parent’s story of unlikely love, his half-breed status did not earn him many friends.
He stood out among his peers, all silken haired and paper pale, with bright red-brown eyes. He was the ugly, broad duckling in the pond of svelte swans.
Melior’s appearance did not gain him many friends; they often called him Minikui as a child- ugly.
Chaim, the smartass son of a blacksmith, had been the only friend he’d managed to keep all these years, and under his friend’s father, Melior had started to train towards his ultimate goal of becoming a mantle holder.
He wanted to make sure another genocide like the one that happened to his mother’s people, his people, never happened again. He wanted to prove himself just as capable and worthy of respect as any of his peers, and while he’d often been laughed at for this goal, Chaim never quit believing in him.
“My father wanted me to come looking for you, you know. Said he had important news to tell.”
“Now?”
“No, a moon from now-yes now, you lunkhead!”
Melior frowned, a strong movement that creased his cheeks.
“I’m working right now-“
“That can wait, c’mon!”
And with that, Chaim took off through the grass, his opened yukata fluttering behind him, while Melior swore. The darker boy bolted off towards the single stable he and his mother had built, and saddled up the one dappled mare they owned, a sleepy eyed grey horse named Tsukareta.
He rode her down the black dirt path, following his friend’s sandal prints into town. Melior was taking her at an easy trot, as he did not wish to rush the old mare. (The last time he had done so, she’d thrown him off and trotted to the nearest pond to drink.)
As he rode through the wooden town, pagoda-like buildings painted with reds, black, white, and browns, he saw the government servants stringing up banners from rooftops. The banners were painted with the symbol of The honored Demon, his pointed face-paint and long tongue giving the face of the god away.
He was meant to horrify, and that he did. Melior recalled stories his father would tell him to terrify him into being good. “Behave or the Demon will cut your tongue out!” He’d tell Melior, and his son would always be good, fearing for his tongue’s safety. But now Melior wished to become the Demon he was so afraid of, and to incite hope in children, rather than fear.
Beneath the sign’s face, blood red text calling for strong young warriors to come to the palace to apply for the role of Mantle before the next new moon.
This hit him with a surprise- the next new moon was tomorrow! There would be no way he could make it to the palace in time, that was at least a 4 day trip!
Before he turned to complete fear, he watched as a servant noticed a typo, stuck her fingers into her mouth, then took a paintbrush into her now bloody palm and repainted over the words new moon with full moon.
At this, Melior gagged and turned his head back to the path, dodging merchants selling boiled bird eggs and gizzards and livers and the like. Tsukareta nimbly avoided children playing with balls and hoops and kites in the street. That was one similarity Melior was always thankful he never shared with the Sanguineum people: they had the uncanny ability to spit blood at whim, like beasts trying to blind their prey or disgust their predators. Melior had only managed to do it once under extreme stress, and had made a promise to himself never to do that again. The experience was traumatic, and the blood had stained his mother’s dining room table, which was even more traumatic if you ask her
But, with this disgusting editing, Melior was given more time, and he mumbled a prayer of thanks to The Demon under his breath.
By the time they had passed through town, he found himself with the familiar burn of steel in his nose, and knew he was close to the blacksmith’s.
Chaim’s father was an ancient man named Edo, and he was practically a skeleton. Chaim had always told Melior that his father once crafted weapons for the King, the Royal Council, and for the Demon Mantle himself!
This was one of his friend’s tall tales Melior elected to personally not believe, as all three of those honors seemed highly unlikely to be had at once. Even for a man like Edo, who was likely the best blacksmith he’d ever known (although to be honest, he didn’t know more than one blacksmith.)
When Melior arrived, Chaim was sitting in a rusted out chair, picking at his fingernails and hardly even glanced at him.
“About time you showed up, Melly.”
“Don’t call me that.” He mumbled, tying up Tsukareta to a post and patting on her nose. She whinnied in response, and Chaim stretched in his chair, motioning to the door. Melior’s heavy footsteps made the wooden steps of the shack groan in protest, and his ink haired friend yawned.
“Father said for you to head to the workshop, he had a gift for you. Wanted you to learn to use it before you ran off to get yourself killed to try and become a Mantle holder.”
Melior didn’t honor this statement with a retort, rather just turned back, and walked through the dry, untrimmed grass, finding himself at old man’s work hut. The sharp smell of hot metal singed at his nose, and the sheer heat radiating from the building made his eyes water as he stepped inside.
“Edo.” He said firmly, bringing a fist to his chest before dipping into a courteous bow.
Edo, in response, let out a haggard scream, hitting a cane over Melior’s head before returning to his hearth. The younger man swore, and rubbed on what he was sure would become a knot.
“Ow! Demon’s blood, old man, did you think I was an intruder?!”
“I have told you before about walking in without asking to come in! And don’t give me your apologies, I’m not going to waste what time I have left listening to them!”
Melior sidled up to the wooden work table centering the hut. It was aged and brittle and crumbling, the decor seemingly matching it’s owner.
“Oh, I’d never, sir.” Melior deadpanned, before getting another hit with Edo’s cane.
He scowled while the old man dragged a creaky, rusting stool from a darkened corner, and reached for a fabric bound item on a shelf.
He struggled with the weight of the object, but did not ask Melior’s help, he simply tossed the object onto the table, where it’s wooden legs groaned in protestation while Edo hobbled over to it. The old man struggled to untie the string binding it with stiff, semi-arthritic fingers, but managed to free the object from the bundle.
He moved the fabric to the side, and on the table now laid the most distinguished, beautiful weapon Melior had ever seen. A square of polished black steel became a gradient into unpolished metal, the edge sharp as sickle Melior had used to harvest rice.
Melior’s eyes lit up as he took the long handled weapon into his hands.
“...An axe.”
“Yes, an axe.”
Melior quickly put it back down on the table, almost frightened by the sight of it. He backed up like at any time it might attack him.
“I can’t take this, this is meant for only-“
“I know who it’s meant for, boy! I made the damned thing! I just want you to bring it to him as a gift!”
The young man watched as Edo rebound it, and handed it to him with aged, shaking hands.
“You bring that to Genahaki and tell him it’s a sign of approval from Edo.”
Melior frowned as he took it. The axe felt heavier than any rice sack he’d carried in his life! He was to lug this on his back, and on Tsukareta? That seemed almost cruel to him and the horse.
“He’ll take you seriously if you give this to him. Otherwise, you’re just like every other arrogant soldier, aristocratic softie and farm boy that plan on being the next Mantle holder.”
And with this, Edo strapped the weapon to Melior’s back before sending him out with a cane whip to the ankles.
When he returned to the front of the house, Tsukareta looked at him lazily. Chaim was nowhere to be seen, likely inside napping already.
Melior shook his head as he untied the reins from the post. Chaim was almost unbearable in his laziness, but he was still his friend, so he had learned to put up with it.
Without a word, Melior left Chaim and Edo’s shack on a calmly trotting Tsukareta, heading home with the axe strapped to his back. If he was to be prepared to head to the palace by the next moon, he needed to be ready for the training it took to become a mantle.
He needed to learn how to find his inner Demon.
