I dont think I really need to present today's game with much commentary. Dominion mission with short edge deployment. Night Lords keeping us in darkness until turn 3. Imperial Fists losing one half of their points cost every turn, from a turn one exploding Land Raider claiming 8 lives, to a trio of Predator Melta-Cannon turning a Dreadnought to mulch every shot. I didn't bother photographing my enemy - I think it works just to show my own force each turn, as it vanished away. It doesn't matter if your army is super elite, or if you make all the right decisions, or if you know exactly what you're doing - if the only high rolls you ever make is for your Leadership Checks, you're gonna go nowhere. And I definitely didn't do any of those other things either! (Incidentally, I stopped counting my failed leadership rolls somewhere after the sixth. Which happened on turn three. My own assault marines got pinned by intercepting rotor cannons as soon as they deployed. My lascannons were pinned turn one from a sniper rifle, and never unpinned. My Castellan and his squad failed three tests in a row, and rallied on the board edge. Aaargh.) The 9th Savlar decided to celebrate Orktober with an Ork themed operation - a bunch of lads went out to steal some know-wots. Ended in the most on-brand possible outcome, a catastrophic error cascade caused the whole server to implode, uninstall all of its mods, and boot us all out. So I've been doing some basing. Back to my home Legion, with the newest rules announcements - the Imperial Fists have held my heart ever since I first met @crusadeandheresy at Warhammer World for a Shadow War event. I liked my Imperial Fists when I first painted them, but I didn't get many finished. This fella is an attempt to match the style of my older models while using the techniques I have found the most fun in these last hundred and eighty days. There's a lot I don't like, especially how weird the eyes look from a foot away. My opponent from last week offered his Alpha Legion unto the anvil of war - a rematch with armies almost identical to last time. I left one of the Contemptors at home, to much rejoicing from the foe, and replaced him with a squad of ten Phalanx Warders. The game opened the same way it ended - with a whole lot of ones. After seizing the initiative on the first turn, the Fists hammered at the enemy: targeting the sniper Exodus before he would have a chance to pin us. Everything missed. Not even a scratch. My countercharge was spent in their first turn, as a ball of Lernian Terminators deployed from their Spartan on the left flank. Four attacks, four hits, 2+ to kill, four ones. This fight turned into a vast furball, as tactical marines and Phalanx Warders flooded in. On the right flank, Sigismund failed a charge from his Land Raider. Turn three, and the left flank and center both folded. Both Dreadnoughts blew up, the Warders fled, and Sigismund lost the last of his bodyguard. In return, he charged, slaughtered, and ran down a squad of tacticals. The game was all but lost, but the Fists fought on tooth and nail, for our mission was War of Lies and even now there was a slim chance of victory. As Alpharian fire flickered out, that chance turned to ash. All of my Line units were dead, and the only models that remained were humping Lascannons around. Honoured Ancient Hastor the Inwit. Of the many Inwit-born Space Marines to take up the Templar Oath, Templar Brother Hastt was the first to be interred in the technologic casket of a Dreadnought - perhaps even the first ever Inwit native to find immortality in the half-death of a Contemptor's pilot. While I don't see much place for my Terminator equipped Templar Brethren in the new rules, I must say I was starting to feel insulted by the length of time they've gone unpainted. These were the first models I bought specifically for the Imperial Fists, rather than getting recycled from an old project. Huscarls from when they were a line in a novel, rather than Cataphractii with rules. Classic Horus Heresy in that way.
