The one time I was scheduled to work one of those black Friday things when I worked for target, nobody showed up. So I went home. Kind of the only target experience I missed out on. I did get to experience target moments like:
Maga mask meltdowns
Toilet paper hoarder frenzy
Drunk ladies on the mobility scooters
Fat lady getting mobility scooter stuck perpendicular ala Austin powers in the potato chip aisle
fat lady rolling over a case stack of Mikes Hard Lemonade in her customized 4x4 sized mobility scooter
white trash constantly dropping gallons of milk cuz fentanyl makes it too heavy
chasing teenagers making TickTocks out of the store
poop in the dressing room
dirty diaper in the BBQ grill in summer seasonal set
old man trailing poop down his pant leg onto the floor from the pharmacy to the Werther's hard candy section
adults and children fighting each other over pokeyman cards
concussion
broken nose
possible broken leg (it turned out not)
red alert /active shooter lockdown (cancelled- shooter was some crazy boomer in an old folks facility 5 miles away)
building barricade of water pallets at entrance because cops murdered a black kid selling xans down the street and regional mgmt we're worried antifa was gonna drive over from Portland and attack this random target (lol)
chasing teenagers stealing video games during solar eclipse cuz entire staff stopped working, went outside and stared at the sun
stocking Round Up pesticide bottles on the shelf beside apple juice because that's just how the two different department happened to join.
Microwave pizza rolls in break room
coworker who would carry a tiny notebook and make note of other coworkers. Pretty sure it was a hit list. I'm pretty sure I was on that list. Gone after a stalking incident. But we all on alert if we ever saw him again so we could run and hide
school shooter-y type coworker brought his Glock to help deter shoplifting

Hey guys! So this is something I wrote awhile ago and idk if y’all will like it but wanted to post it 😊 let me know what you think and/or if I should write more. If you have any questions about horse stuff feel free to message me! The cover page has all the horses on it! I’ll reboot with the order of which horse is which.
5sos x horses; Luke Hemmings x Nicole
Chapter 1
The trailer door swung open and a beautiful chestnut warmblood backed out with his head held high and his tail brushing against his legs,as he swishes it back and forth. His name was etched on the silver plate attached to the cheek piece of his orange halter. The scripture was neat and straight, etched in all capital letters "CRASH" centered in the middle of the plate. Crash was a heck of a horse, strong and trained to the t. He excelled in everything he did. He won almost all the Jumper shows he entered and excelled in dressage. Crash was sent to my farm as a retirement home, even though he's only about 6. His owner decided that he should retire from the show life and just be a normal horse so I bought him to teach people how to jump and use him as a beginner level show horse. I took Crash from the trailer hand and led him into the barn.
The barn had about 12 stalls with an attached indoor riding arena at the end. There were 6 sets of cross ties in the isle between the stalls. There was a room 5 stalls deep on the left that was filled with saddles, halters, leads, bridles, and everything the horses needed along with their food. All the stalls led out to long stretched out paddocks, leaving the horses plenty of room to run and graze. All the horses were outside in their pastures when we entered the barn and I brought Crash into the 4the stall on the left. I released the lead from the place it was clipped on his halter, letting him loose in his stall. He instantly gulped up some water and moved to his hay with a wag of his tail. After waving off the trailer hand, i climbed up into the hay loft and pushed down 8 bales of hay, landing them right outside the front door of the barn.
"Oy,Nicole! You almost crushed us there sweetheart." a thick Australian accent called from below. I smiled as i climbed down the ladder faced with 4 boys covered in hay. "Sorry guys!" I giggle as i grab each hay bail and quickly stack them in a 4X4 pile. "Haven't brought the horses in yet?" A voice asked form behind me. I turn around to face him. He is tall, about 6'3", with bright blue eyes and blonde hair that was styled up into a quiff. "The new horse came just a few minutes ago,Lucas.I haven't had time." I smiled at him as i walked up to him and quickly kissed him on the lips. If you couldn't tell the blonde, tall boy is my boyfriend Luke. With him he brought his friends Ashton,Calum, and Michael. Ashton is tall but the shortest of the boys. he has curly brown hair with emerald green eyes and is always smiling. He wore a ripped up muscle tee and black skinny jean identical to the rest of the boys. Calum has black hair with a blond streak in his bangs that is swept off to the side just over his chocolate brown . Michael has a different hair color every time i see him, but today it was red and styled in a messy wind swept look hiding a little bit of his jade eyes from view.
"Do you guys wanna help me get them in?" i asked as i ran down to the end of the barn entering the stalls and clipping the doors to the paddocks open and sliding the stall doors closed behind me. Ashton and Calum did the same as I saw Luke and Michael struggling to open a hay bail. "Um,Nicole do you have like a knife or something?" Michael yells to me as i meet Calum and Ashton by the tack room, all the stalls ready for the horses. "You don't need one,Mike." i say as i walk over to them and take the baling twine and popping it off the hay. "Your girlfriends got some muscle, Luke" Michael nudges Luke in the arm as he watches me break open 4 more bales of hay. "It's because I've been opening hay bales for you for like 3 years." i turn around and look at Michael who is shocked for being called out on not be able to do it. The rest of the boys start laughing at Michaels lack of words and soon he joins in realizing i
was joking.Partially. The 4 boys helped me get hay in all the stall, Luke tossing a broken up bale over his shoulder and walking to the end of the barn, throwing 2 flakes in each stall until he ran out.
As soon as the hay was in all the stalls, Calum turns to me and asks "can i do it this time?" I laugh as I nod my head and grab onto Luke's arm as he comes up next to me. Calum put his fingers in his mouth and whistled loud and long and there was a moment of silence throughout the barn then there was the sound of thundering hooves. All the horses came running in as we stood at the beginning of the barn and watched as the horses started to nibble on their hay. In the stall to our left was Cam, a big chestnut suffolk punch. His coat glistened from the sunlight peeking in through the door behind him, making him look as if he was sparkling. On the Right side was Joe, a big black percheron with a huge head and body. His mane was perfectly straight and flopped to one side as he ate his hay. Beside Cam was my favorite horse, Baelfire. He is a beautiful bay Arabian with a beautiful white blaze going down his forehead and ending at the end of his nose.
Across from Baelfire was Jade. I have had Jade since she was a foal.I rescued her form an animal shelter after her mother passed away and needed constant care. There was about a month where i was sleeping in the barn with her ,feeding her bottles every 3 hours. Now she was one of the best horses I've ever trained. Even though she is about 7 years old, she is trained to understand my vocal commands and i use her all the time to teach the barn kids how to ride. She is a beautiful white Warmblood mare and is one of the most beautiful horses I've ever seen. Next to Baelfire was Luke's horse, Coal. We had gotten him about a year and a half ago as a 5 year old and Luke instantly fell in love with him. Horses then turned into a passion for both of us. Luke worked hard with Coal to make him the excellent horse that he is today. Coal is absolutely spoiled too. Luke always sneaks down and gives him twizzlers and candy, which Coal loves and can now smell on anyone, even in your breath. Across from Coal is a horse named Klaus who is the biggest horse in the barn. He is a beautiful black and white shire with with fluffy white feathering on his jet black legs. He has a straight blaze running down the length of his face and ending right above his nose. Despite his big body, he's the sweetest horse and everyone who meets him instantly falls in love with him. Next to Klaus is Crash the warmblood that I received this morning. He was settling in nicely as he munched on his hay looking up and down the aisle at the horses around him. Across from Crash is Beck. Beck is a solid colored golden paint with a flaxen mane.Beck is sort of the barn stud. He always has the 2 barn mares around him and he is always very possessive over them. The other horses let him think he's the boss but when he steps out of line the horses put him right back in his place.
Next to Beck is an empty stall at the moment. Across from the empty stall is the tack room filled with saddles and bridles, along with brushes, first aid supplies, and a bunch of other horse necessities. Next to the tack room is a chestnut warmblood gelding named King. He is the old guy on the farm at the age of 24,which is just a number to him. King loves to run and he loves to act like a 2 year old and run around the paddocks with the young guns of the barn. We never count King out because of his age. His age just makes him more experienced. Across from King is the other barn mare Aussie who is an Australian Stock horse. She is a beautiful dark bay with light points and legs. Aussie is a great trail horse and has received many ribbons in reining and barrel racing. I still take her to shows every once in a while but here new favorite thing to do is to go swimming in the lake down one of the trails. Next to Aussie is one of my favorite horses, Dino. Dino is an 18 hand giant Warmblood and is ever pound of 2,000lbs. Dino is a dark bay with light dapples on his rear and white socks on his two front legs. Across from Dino is a small Paint named Mason who is very vibrant red paint with one brown eye and one blue eye. Mason is The youngest horse that i have at just about 3 years old. He is ridable, but is very green and needs a lot of help. Every one of these horses holds a special place in my heart and they are all family to Luke and I.
"So you guys ready to go now?" I ask as I enter the tack room walking down the line of bridles hooked to the wall and grabbing the black leather bridle with a snaffle bit on it and a silver tag on the brow band reading "Baelfire". I then grab my saddle from the saddle rack to the left of all the bridles, along with a saddle pad and girth. "Ash here has never ridden a horse, Nicole" Michael says as he grabs Ashton's shoulders and pushes him a little. " He can ride Jade! Where did Luke go, he can help" I ask Michael as Luke is no where to be found. As if on queue, Luke comes out of one of the stalls and starts walking towards us. "Well i was tacking up Coal cause i had a feeling you were gonna ask me to help Ash." Luke announces as he comes up next to me with all my tack in my arm and grabs my saddle and places it on the saddle rack near Baelfires stall. " Thank you, Baby." i say as walk up to where he was with my saddle and i attached my lips to his. At first it was a soft kiss but then it grew into more of a kiss.I started to
Laugh into the kiss as Baelfire reached his head out of the stall and grabbed Luke by his t-shirt. Luke pulled away from the kiss feeling the pressure of Baelfire pulling on him and once he got his shirt free, he said "I guess i have some competition, Hey Baelfire." Luke giggled as he scratched Baelfires head and started walking towards the tack room. "What do you want Jade in,Nicole?" Luke yells over his shoulder as he enters the tack room. " Throw her in the kimberwick and use Mason's saddle." I yell as I get a halter on Baelfire and pull him into the aisle, attaching him to the cross ties. "What the heck did you just say?" Ashton giggled as he looked at me like i had 3 heads. "It's the tack Ash. Luke will show you." I laugh as i return to Baelfire and start brushing him off. Calum and Michael come out of the tack room with tack and place them on the saddle racks that are on the wall down the aisles. "Are you guys taking Beck and Dino?" I ask as the walk down to the end of the barn and into stalls. "Yes,Nicole. Is that a problem?" Calum sasses as he gives me a grin and enters Dino's stall. " I laugh and continue brushing.
Luke comes out of the tack room with Ashton in toe and sets the tack down on the saddle rack with a Purple saddle pad. I put Baelfire's light blue saddle pad on his back along with the saddle. I then attached the girth and tightened it on both sides. I unclipped Baelfire from the cross ties and slip the reins over his head and slide off his halter. I slowly push the bit in his mouth and pull the crown piece over his ears and adjusted the nose band and throat latch. I left the reins over his neck and just let him stand there as I put on his light blue splint boots. Once I was all tacked up. I looked behind me to see everyone tacked but Ashton. "Whats the hold up Luke?" I ask as i come up to Jade's side. "Umm, well i can't find her girth" He says as he scratches the back of his neck and looks around the tack room. I go in the tack room and look under some of the saddle racks and find the girth we were looking for under one. It must have fallen while we were moving all the tack around. I exit the tack room and hand Luke the girth as he hands it to Ashton, he instructs him on how to put it on. "Ok. Ash so you buckle it like a belt and then you go to the other side and tighten it a bit." Ashton does the girth no problem and then picks up the bridle from the saddle rack and moves to her head and unclips her from the cross ties and bridles her. After he is done bridling Jade, He puts on her purple splint boots and she is all set to go.
We all went outside with our horses in one hand and a helmet in the other. Michael led Beck out in his dark green saddle pad and splints which contrasted perfectly with his light coat color. Calum came out next with Dino in a Teal saddle pad and white splint boots, not matching the teal because we couldn't find teal splints in his size. Finally Ashton and Luke come out with Jade and Coal and join us in the little field in front of the barn. Luke put Coal is a bark blue saddle pad and splints, which kinda matched with Baelfire and I. Luke,Calum, and Michael all hop on their horses and put their helmets on. I tie up Baelfires reins and let him nibble on some grass and walk over to Ashton to help him get on. I walk over to Jade and tighten her girth and roll down her stirrups. "Ok Ash so all you have to do is put your foot in the stirrup and pull your self up into the saddle." I instructed as I held on to the stirrup on the right side of the saddle while Ashton was on the left side. Ashton put his foot on the stirrup and pulled himself up into the saddle like he had been doing it for years. "We have a natural here boys" Calum says as he drops his reins and puts his hands up in the air celebrating that Ashton got on. I adjusted his stirrups for him as well as tightening his girth one last time and then walked back over to Baelfire. I untied his reins and jumped on his back, clipping my helmet in place before i adjusted my girth and stirrups.
When I was finished, I asked "Are you ready boys?" with a nod from all 4 boys we start heading on the trail. I gave Ashton a quick run down on how to ride, "Ok Ashton so kicking her will make her go forward and kicking her more after shes moving will make her go faster. if you want her to stop pull on the reins. If you want here to turn pull gently on the rein in the direction you want to go. Don't worry if you have a hard time, Jade knows commands so just tell her what too do. Got it?" I ask riding up to Ashton's side. He nods and gives Jade a gentle kick and we were on our way.

04. Run
A story based on the fictional HYYH world about six boys with unimaginable problems and their friend that can’t do anything to help.
Member: Taehyung
Genre: Angst
Warning: warnings are posted in the masterlist
Word Count: 3.4K
Parts can be found on my Masterlist under “The Most Beautiful Moment In Life”
A/N: New parts every Tuesday and Friday
Life began to get to each of us.
January.
December came like a quick intake of breath and went like a heavy sigh. Once the cozy feeling of the holidays was over, winter became harsh and merciless. An icy fist that squeezed and squeezed until there was no warmth left. Taehyung was used to it though. He’d never liked winter. Not since his mom had died just after Christmas his fifth year. Mina had been too young to remember her, being only three years old, but Taehyung could remember her perfectly still, as if he’d talked to her just the day before.
He and his sister used to stay up late a lot—at least whenever they were both home—curled up on their shared bed, facing each other, covered in two layers of clothes and three blankets because their father turned the heat way down whenever he wasn’t home, which was often. Not often enough though in Taehyung’s opinion. But they would lay like that for hours and Taehyung would tell Mina stories about their mother. He didn’t have many spectacular ones—being he really could only remember a few from such a young age—but once those ran out, she started asking him simpler things. What did mom look like? What did she smell like? What did she sound like? Feel like?
“She looked like spring, smelled like flowers, sounded like rain and felt like sunshine.” How else could he describe her? Maybe his memories were clouded by the happier life he’d lived with her in it but he’d rather have this version of her in his mind. He needed it. Needed something good to cling to.
*
The first time his father had hit him, he’d apologized profusely afterward, and made Taehyung promise he’d never tell a soul. He didn’t. And he didn’t the second and third time either or any time after that. He’d never told anyone, other than his friends and only because they grew suspicious of the bruises and the injuries and his unexpected late night calls asking if he could sleep over.
Over the years, he became good at reading the signs and predicting when his dad was going to have an outburst. If he got home from work and slammed the door behind him, it was time to retreat to the bedroom and bolt the door. If he came with a freshly bought bottle of alcohol, it was time to leave. Taehyung’s only reason for not moving out was Mina. He’d made a promise to her and himself that he’d always be there to protect her, even if that meant taking the brunt of the abuse himself. Which it always did.
He’d ended up in the hospital a few times keeping his dad away from his sister, stepping in the way of the punches, even tackling the man to the floor to give her a chance to run. It always ended badly but he never complained. Not when it would be so much worse for her. She didn’t deserve to live in fear like this. He didn’t either but especially not her. He at least had good memories of their mother. She only had the nightmares that came with having a monster for a father.
When things got too hard, his friends were his escape. Five of them had their own problems. And five of them had families that would get suspicious if he came around too often and he couldn’t risk anyone going to the police and tearing him away from his sister. The one person he could always count on to help and be his safe place was Namjoon.
The boy was an orphan living secretly at the gas station where he worked. Taehyung didn’t have to hide anything from him. In fact, there were countless times in the past where he’d show up at the gas station pounding on the door at two in the morning, broken and bleeding and Namjoon wouldn’t say anything. He would just let him inside and make room for him on the small twin blow-up mattress he dragged out of the broom closet every night. And if he was too worked up to sleep, the two would go out into the city and find something to do. This usually involved spray paint and a concrete wall. More than once the two found themselves running from police sirens, having been caught mid-tag. Namjoon wasn’t the best influence but he was what Taehyung needed.
*
“Take this,” the older boy said holding out a pint of ice cream to him.
Taehyung looked down at it. “I don’t feel like eating ice cream right now, hyung,” he uttered and swiped his tongue across the fresh cut on his lower lip. The taste of salt and iron grated against his tastebuds. His whole head hurt from the evening’s beating. He was ninety percent sure he had a concussion.
“For your lip,” Namjoon replied dropping it into his hand.
Taehyung winced when he touched the cold container to his wound but immediately started to feel the pain fade as his lip began to go numb.
“So, I overslept this morning,” Namjoon said as he grabbed a lollipop from the rack on the counter beside where Taehyung sat and unwrapped it.
“And?”
“And Mr. Bang-nim found me this morning.”
“Did he say anything about all this?” Taehyung asked gesturing toward the mattress on the linoleum floor.
“He said if he finds me sleeping here again, I’m fired.” Then he stuck the candy in his mouth and twirled the stick between his fingers.
Taehyung’s stomach dropped when he saw the unease written across his hyung’s face. The boy had nowhere to go. Taehyung would have invited Namjoon to stay with him but of course he’d never want to subject one of his friends to the hell he had to deal with every day. Though it didn’t matter either way. Namjoon didn’t like asking for help. He wanted to be the one his friends came to, not the other way around. The boy was independent and stubborn to a fault.
“I’ll just have to be more careful,” Namjoon said with a shrug. Of course he was only acting like it wasn’t a big deal. Taehyung knew better.
Light flooded the dim store as a vehicle pulled into the parking lot and Taehyung felt his heart skip at the idea they were going to be caught. But when he looked out through the storefront window, relief flooded his chest. Jin’s 4x4 truck sat idling in front of the gas pumps.
“How’d they—”
“I texted him a bit ago,” Namjoon interrupted, a gentle smile lifting his mouth and causing his cheeks to dimple.
Taehyung hopped off the counter and set the pint of ice cream down before making his way outside. Jin rolled the driver’s side window down, music pouring from inside the cab. The other boys’ voices rose above the singer’s vocals as they screamed along to the song.
“Long time no see,” Taehyung said slapping the oldest boy’s hand when he stuck it out the window.
Jin smiled. “It’s only been a week, Tae,” he said.
Taehyung shrugged. “A week is an eternity in this town.”
The smile on Jin’s face faltered for a second and Taehyung noticed his eyes trail down to the younger’s wounded lip. He quickly swiped his tongue across it to catch the remaining blood. “How’s Mina?”
“She’s fine,” Taehyung said. “At a sleepover.”
The oldest boy’s eyes lingered on his for several moments before he finally gave a small nod. “Hop in,” he said and motioned with his head toward the back of the truck.
Taehyung scrambled over the side and dropped into the bed beside Jimin, who sat with his back against the cab, happily cramming chips into his mouth from a bag. “Want some?” he asked as he offered the bag to him.
“No thanks,” Taehyung said and barely got settled beside his friend when the truck lurched forward and they pulled back out of the gas station.
It was pretty late and almost every food place was closed save for the all-night diner they frequented. There was nothing quality or good about the food there but it was cheap, and greasy and filled their bellies. The waitresses had come to grow fond of them over the years, knowing each of them by name and favorite flavor of milkshake.
The seven of them were the only ones there, which was a good thing since they tended to get a bit rowdy. Their plates had just barely been delivered when Yoongi decided he was going to try and cheer Taehyung up by throwing a handful of french fries at Jungkook. A food fight quickly broke out between the two and the poor waitress had to dodge away to keep from getting hit by a rogue fry.
They spent hours there, stuffing their faces and drowning their problems in ketchup and grease until finally, none of them could bring themselves to take one more bite. Then they made their way sleepily back to the truck, Taehyung flopping into the bed again, this time with Namjoon, and letting his head fall onto the older boy’s lap. The gentle rock of the truck as it made its way down the road and the streetlights that passed intermittently overhead made his eyelids droop dangerously low. He probably shouldn’t fall asleep if he really did have a concussion, but the sound of the engine, the warmth of Namjoon’s thigh pressed against his cheek and the comfortable weight of food in his belly made it impossible for him to keep his eyes open and soon he drifted off completely.
*
Taehyung woke to the strong smell of coffee wafting into his nostrils and he opened his eyes to a chipped ceramic mug inches from his face. Jimin smiled warmly from the other side. It took Taehyung a few seconds to figure out where he was and why his body was aching so bad until he shifted and realized he’d slept all night in Yoongi’s bathtub.
“You know I don’t like coffee,” he uttered, batting his friend’s hand away.
“It woke you up, though, didn’t it?” Jimin asked. His voice was much too cheerful for this time of morning. What time was it anyway?
Taehyung raked his hand through his greasy hair. “How long have I been out?”
“It’s almost noon. You should eat something, Tae,” Jimin said and offered his hand to help the boy climb out of the tub.
Panic rushed through him like ice water. “Noon?” he asked. “I need to get home. I need to be there when Mina gets back from her sleepover.” He tripped out of the bathroom and through the living room, past the other boys crowded around a table as Jin tried to build a house with a deck of cards.
“You’re up!” Jungkook exclaimed throwing his arms up.
“JK!” Jin yelled, his hands frozen in midair. “Stop with the sudden movements!”
“I gotta go,” Taehyung said as he rushed past. The gust of wind he created caused Jin’s card house to collapse and he let out a heavy sigh.
Taehyung didn’t stop though. As soon as he was out of Yoongi’s home, he broke into a run and kept running until he burst through the front door of his apartment. His eyes scanned the empty front room. Liquor and beer bottles littered the kitchen counters, junk mail piled high on the table and scattered on the floor around it. The place was a dump but that wasn’t out of the ordinary. The quiet, however, was. He barely took a step when a whimper cut through the silence and then suddenly he was running again. He paused in the hallway, eyes on the shadows moving in the room at the end. The door was barely cracked open so he couldn’t see who was in there. But then he heard a choked cry. Mina.
Taehyung flew back out of the hall and wrapped a fist around the first thing he could grab, a beer bottle, then charged back down the hall, bursting into the bedroom just as his father’s hand connected with his sister’s cheek.
“Don’t touch her!” Taehyung roared shoving him back hard.
His dad stumbled back more in surprise than pain and he stared at the boy with wild, glazed over eyes. The man reeked of alcohol even at this early hour of the day. He bared his teeth and looked like he was about to lunge. But Taehyung didn’t give him the chance. He rushed forward instead, swinging the beer bottle back and sending it crashing down on his dad’s skull. The man staggered again, this time stunned by the blow. The bottle had broken when it came in contact with his head.
Taehyung could have stopped there. He could have grabbed his sister and turned and ran, maybe taken her back to Yoongi’s. The other boys would be able to help them. But no, the sight of his dad striking her had caused the time bomb within him to finally detonate and now he knew nothing but rage. With a scream that sounded too far away to be coming from his own lungs, Taehyung surged forward again, jabbing the broken bottle into the soft flesh of his father’s stomach. He felt it lodge deep in the man’s belly and a sickening groan fell from his father’s lips but it did nothing to keep Taehyung from stabbing him again and again until blood soaked the front of the man’s t-shirt and coated his own hands and clothes.
In the chaos, he couldn’t hear anything but his own gasping breath and the cries that continued to tumble from the man in front of him until his dad finally collapsed to the floor. Then his sister’s screams reached his ears, her voice already going hoarse from yelling for so long. With a violent shudder, Taehyung staggered back, letting the broken and bloodied bottle fall from his hand and clatter to the floor. His mouth fell open in a silent scream and his knees gave out. As he fell to the floor, his sister caught him, sobbing into his ear.
“What have I done?” Taehyung uttered. “What have I done, Mina? What have I done?”
“You saved me, Tae,” she cried into his neck. “You saved us.”
Their father lay motionless in front of them, the red spreading across his shirt until you could no longer tell what color it had been originally. It seeped down into the carpet, a dark stain that would never fully go away.
“You have to leave, Mina,” Taehyung said, his voice shaking so hard it came out as barely a whisper.
“No, Tae,” she cracked. “I’m not leaving you.”
“You have to.” He grabbed her hard by the shoulders and pulled her down in front of him. His eyes drilled into hers. She had their mother’s eyes. “You have to get somewhere safe. I can’t come with you.”
“But you have—”
“Our dad is dead!” Taehyung screamed. “Our dad is dead and I killed him!”
A whimper fell from Mina’s mouth and for the first time, Taehyung noticed the bruises welling up under he skin. There were so many. How long had their dad been hitting her before he’d gotten there?
“Please, Mina,” he said more gently. “Please, go to a friend’s house. Tell them dad isn’t here and neither am I and you don’t know where either of us are. Please. I’ll come for you when it’s safe. But until then, you have to go.”
Mina nodded, her head jerking up and down erratically as she tried and failed to keep whatever last bit of composure she had. Then suddenly, she fell against him, a wail tearing from her throat and he clutched her to his chest, tears streaming down his own cheeks. His hands were coated still in his father’s blood and he raked his fingers through his sister’s hair, holding onto her, pulling her closer, smelling her, feeling her against him. Who knew if he’d ever see her again?
Mina changed her clothes and washed the blood out of her hair from when Taehyung had held her, before rushing out of the apartment. He didn’t go outside but watched her from the front window. She’d texted a friend and asked them to pick her up and now he watched as she got into their car, her head lifting, her eyes locking on his one last time before she climbed into the the backseat and then she was gone.
He didn’t know what to do. That moment of clarity when he’d needed to get his sister away was gone and now all he could do was stare at the messy living room in shock. With his back pressed against the door, he sank down onto the carpet, his hands catching him as he fell. His hands. Covered in sticky, drying blood. His father’s blood. He killed his father. He was a murderer.
A murderer.
His head began to pound as the thoughts swirled in his brain. It was all too much. Everything was too much. The coppery smell of blood filled his nose, filled his head, filled the room and it overwhelmed him. His hands shook and his breath hitched and he couldn’t inhale deep enough. Too much. He killed his father. He was a murderer.
His eyes watered and his nerves were shot and he was numb but could feel everything at the same time and it was overwhelming. His skin crawled and his heart hammered and his lungs were on fire and he couldn’t breathe and he squeezed his eyes shut as if he could shut out the world and it was all too much. He killed his father. He was a murderer.
A murderer.
*
When he opened his eyes again, it was dark. He didn’t know if he’d fallen asleep or passed out but when his gaze fell on the digital clock on the microwave, he saw that he’d been out for nearly nine hours.
It was silent in the apartment. Silent as the dead. His head slumped to the side and he looked at the entrance to the hallway. His father was back there. Or rather, his body. If he crawled just six feet to his left, he’d be able to peer down the hall and see his dad’s body slumped against the wall in the back bedroom. Immediately, Taehyung felt like he was going to be sick. He made his way clumsily to his feet and tripped into the kitchen, barely making it to the sink before he heaved and the contents of his stomach emptied into the basin. He spit a few times before sitting up again, a sheen of sweat coating his skin. When he brought his arm up to wipe his forehead, his eyes locked on the brown, dried blood that crusted on his skin. Then he looked down again at his white t-shirt. Well, it used to be white.
He rushed out of the kitchen, turning his head away as he passed the hall so he wouldn’t accidentally catch a glimpse of what was at the other end, then slipped out the front door, locking it behind him. He zipped his jacket up to his chin, glad that at least the dark sweatshirt hid the stains, and pulled the hood up over his hair and his sleeves down over his hands. He kept his head down to conceal any blood spatters on his face as he made his way through the dark streets and to the gas station.
To his relief, there were no cars there, but then another thought occurred to him. What if Namjoon wasn’t there either? What if he’d been caught again by his boss? He had to be there. Taehyung didn’t have anyone else to turn to.
He jogged up to the front door and peered in. The place was dark. It looked deserted. As the panic started to set in, he raised his fist and beat it against the glass. At last, he caught movement from within. And then Namjoon appeared in one of the aisles toward the back. He seemed to recognize who it was immediately and hurried over. A lollipop stick stuck out of his mouth and he switched it from one corner to the other in a nervous habit as he unlocked the door and opened it. Only then did he notice that Taehyung was covered in blood. Slowly, he lifted a hand and pulled the candy out of his mouth.
Taehyung’s breath quivered as he met the older boy’s eyes. “I did something really bad, hyung.”

You don’t know you’re alive until you’re almost dead. Chapter Zero. Genesis.
Year 2061. July first. Yellowstone national park. Yellowstone Caldera.
The earth heaved and shook. The groundwater was made toxic by the sulphuric gasses that pushed up through the earths crust. The wildlife began leaving the increasingly inhospitable area, almost as if they knew what was to come.
Humanity had been warned, but wouldn't listen. Thankfully, the earth remained calm for now.
Year 2114. December 21st. 9:00 pm Friday. Northern Sweden.
31 year old Lars Karlsson, advanced physicist at I.a.c.e. (Institute for advancement of clean energy) had fallen asleep on the couch. They had left Stockholm 06:30 in the morning, and driven for 11 hours, to their cabin at lake Hornavan, just north of Arjeplog, for a 14 day Christmas holiday. His 26-year old wife Lena, pharmacologist and yoga instructor, was singing and dancing to the kitchen radio, while fixing some snacks. She looked out the window at the raging snowstorm, and was thankful to be home. On a clear day she could see the village where she was born and raised. And she was thankful to be out of the noisy, dirty capital for the first time all year. She put her hands on her growing stomach and smiled. "Thirteen more weeks till I can see you two." She couldn't wait to be a mom and show them all her favorite spots in the mountains.
She put away the bags with chips and candy, closed the pantry and the dishwasher, and reached for the bowl on the counter. She gasped and grasped for the edge of the counter as a sharp stabbing pain radiated out from her stomach.
Lars awoke to his wife screaming his name. "LAAAARS!" He stumbled into the dining room, his wife stood in the doorway to the kitchen, her grey sweatpants were stained dark red down the inside of both her legs. He froze. He didn't know what to do! "Could you possibly call 112 Lars? NOOW!" Her screeching voice jolted him into action. He fumbled desperately with his phone. He misdailed 112 three times before he got it right. Lena felt something warm slowly running down her legs. She didn't look, knowing full well what it was but she didn't want to see. She had to keep calm, she closed her eyes and thought of her babies. Seconds felt like hours. A woman answered and she heard "what's your emergency?" Lars stuttered, made some strange noises and couldn't form a single word, let alone a sentence. "Give me the phone Lars." He held it out towards her, across the entire dining room. Her patience had its limits tested. "Come here with it, please, Lars." He was not good in high stress situations. "Hello?" Said the voice on the phone. "Hi, I'm Lena Karlsson, we're up at Hornavan, I'm 29 weeks along with twins, and I just had a bleed. A big one." She listened intently to the woman on the other end, explaining that the helicopter couldn't fly in the storm, and the closest delivery room was at least 3 hours away on a good day. "Well we don't have a choice do we? I can't do this alone, and my husband is completely useless right now." Lars looked at her and nodded in agreement. "We'll get there, one way or another." She hung up the phone, her mind racing. She knew time was of the essence, but her fear kept getting in the way of her reasoning. She knew she had to solve this. Normally, their cabin was perfect in her mind, there wasn't even much of a road leading up to it. Their 4x4 Jeep had barely made it up to the cabin. That would probably get stuck in the snow somewhere. In the shed outside sat the Yamaha 360 Propulse snowmobile they bought last year. It was definitely fast enough. On flat hard snow it would do 140 mph. They'd be there in 80 minutes at that speed. Or crash and die horribly. Stay here and die for sure? Or save her babies? There was no doubt in her mind. "Lars, go start the snowmobile." He nodded and hurried out the door. Lena went to the hallway and opened the closet. Gloves, overalls, boots, helmets. Everything was where it should be. She heard the high pitched whine of the Yamaha turbine spooling up. Thank god the battery wasn't dead. She got out of her bloodied pants, put on the insulating inner suit, and stepped in the overall. Lars came back in. "It's just outside the door." "Good, get dressed." He didn't even think, he just did what he was told. He helped her with her zipper and helmet, then closed his own. They stepped out into the snowstorm looking like two inflated racing drivers.
Lars climbed on the front seat of the snowmobile. "Are you sure you want to drive?" She shouted over the wind and the idling turbine. He thought for a second, then scooted backwards. She climbed on carefully, and sat down as slow as she could. She wasn't in extreme pain, but she didn't want to push it. She put the dead mans grip on her wrist, turned on the lights and the heat in the handle and seats. She put it in gear and started the descent down the steep mountainside. She had picked this one for its superior handling in deep snow and long range. It's turbine engine used so little fuel they hadn't even filled it up last year, it had just under half a tank left. She hoped it would be enough. She steered carefully past the trees that marked their path down, winding slowly down to the main road. When the path ended she couldn't see the road, but she saw that there were no trees. She turned it in the right direction and pressed her thumb down hard on the throttle.
360 horsepower of supercharged nitrogen turbine erupted into life, propelling them forward so hard she almost lost her grip on the handlebars. Lars who couldn't really see anything wasn't ready and almost fell off. He was scared out of his mind, but Lena only thought of her babies. A stray thought crossed her mind as she saw the needle pass 120 mph. If we crash now, we won't even have time to feel it. We'll just be dead. She didn't look at the speedometer again.
Five days later, December 27th, Lena and Lars waited for the doctor to discharge her and the babies. Lars had fueled the snowmobile the day before and bought a sled to transport their babies in. He had been ambushed at the gas station by a reporter that had heard of the story about the speed demon mom on a quest to save her twins. They were in the papers today. After a quick chat with the doctor they we're on their way out to the parking lot, where the same reporter wanted an interview with Lena as well. She kindly declined, with a long journey ahead of them, she just wanted to go home.
"Please," he begged, "just one picture?" She looked at Lars. "Sure." he replied.
Lena held the boy, and Lars held the girl. "Have you decided any names yet?" Lena nodded and looked at her son. "Erik." Lars nodded and looked at his baby girl. "Sophia?" He looked to Lena. She nodded approvingly. "Sophia."

#TBT Featuring “Screwed Up FJ” in the 2nd Ward. Being a B&R Dallas-cite, living in Houston was something special to my Texan heart. My mom is from San Antonio, My Dad from Dallas, and my brother was born in Houston. My Dad would always tell me stories of Houston when my mom and he lived there during the mid-’70s to early ’80s. I could only imagine how much different it looked back then. I’ve been into Rap my entire life, Dallas has had its music movement, But Houston always had some hard-hitting artist in the Rap game since the ’80s. So being able to live in the city where lyrics put on beats painted a picture in my mind of ghetto dreams, paint so glossy it looked like candy, dope houses, and grey cassette tapes that sold like crack. This experience will always be in my skull like a screw and I made sure I visited those streets that were put on beats. 59 South Lee, Clover land, Mo City, North Side, Reveille park, and many more. Easter and leave.
I know it’s Easter Sunday but blog I must, as emotions may get the better of me by tomorrow! It’s his last day of leave and he will be returning to base. (Boo hoo!) But what a fantastic week we have had, we are not having the planned extension due to costs but we have a log cabin in the planning stage to incorporate a hot tub, oh and a bar! Well, it’s a luxury item that we have been dreaming about for the past three years, so we did it! Our local store couldn’t get the square one down from the storage as the fork lift truck has broken down, so cue me and a little persuasive ‘nice damsel in distress that we wanted one today’ voice and a nice man agreed he and the manager could “put their hands on one not displayed for £450” (£50 more) Ok, ok I reiterated as long as it’s that price I will send husband back down. He returned home with this huge 4-6 seater thing with bloody LED lights, numerous jets and in short - is shear heaven. We have not watched any TV all week nor indeed, been on the Internet or had any inclination to play candy crush! This tub has been a good purchase!
Then he wants to get a gazebo, twinkly lights and a shed?! The husband has worked really hard in the back garden for the week making it just a relaxing area for us, we have gained a decking area this year as obviously both children do not need to be safely enclosed and tend to play in the woods. The bonus is that we have a whole level of decking previously reserved for the smaller person - it now has a shed (not a man shed) and we are managing to clear boxes from the spare room. We have agree should we go to war at any stage that we could probably kit out a few 'soldiers’ in the bloody kit he has but alas for now it has to be stored until he can get it back to some master?! There is a name for this particular person but I can’t remember, anyway it’s the person who takes all the surplus uniform to be returned to? Well another surplus store which is better than our spare room I might add!
I am so crap at all the army stuff (as you all know) and there is a new blogger in the midst who is raw and very real but I have to say, I can’t understand why - when people respond to her funnies that there is such a bloody need for all the fooking T.L.A.’s it drives me nuts trying to figure out this foreign language other wives talk! Give me a break please - just write it in English eh? It doesn't make you part of the military, neither does it make you important for other subordinates to have to ask WTF is that?! But I guess that’s the downside to MU living. I am just not in the 'zone’. AND another thing that bugs the hell out of me…(sorry, got to just get this off my chest)… A partner, wife, girlfriend or whatever; posts about how sad they are that husband is deploying, this is the most mind boggling, character changing shite any partner, wife, girlfriend or whatever might go through and yet…many see this as a freaking competition with lines like “been there, done that” “husband had done 3,590 tours so far and counting” “mine was away for all children’s births” etc etc etc Ladies - what is this shite?! What’s wrong with saying “Hey, I’m sorry chick, it will be ok, you can do this we know how it feels? Here for you?” Now in my book, that’s far more supportive but noooooo this is too easy for most?! *rant over!
Anyway, onto delightful MU things and aside from hot tub and shed building we have managed to get a family day out or two in. We pottered off to Prickly Ball Farm on Friday. It’s a hedgehog hospital and our children love animals of any description especially if they have a 'rescue story’ to boot. So we walk around this little farm and fall in love with all of the little animals deciding that when we win the lottery this is what we would love to do and of course Erin still has her heart set on a chicken or two! But apart from that I can’t help but notice that most of these places are geared towards your average toddler and pre-schooler with soft play areas and slides etc which every screaming kid around us is enjoying. This is great but as I found with my own two at this age, they have little fooking interest in conservation or rescue animals and actually once you have paid whatever extortionate entrance fee it is to get into these place all the little darlings want to do is go to the play areas?! Ours are older and much more interested in the animals and conservation coupled with a rescue story so when we sit in the hedgehog hospital to meet 'Bob’ the hedgehog, this young girl comes out to tell us about their extra sensitive ears and can we all keep quiet so that Bob doesn’t get too frightened? Yep, all of the 30 odd toddlers got this bit for sure *rolls eyes and the young girl had no control over them! Erin was whispering how worried she was about Bob because 'these kids are not quiet’ I sat very very glad that we had passed this bloody stressful stage in parenting! That said, little Bob coped well and will be released back into the wild this week. I predict little Bob will be a very happy little hedgehog away from the farm!
I collected Mum for Easter dinner today and she is doing well, she is still talking about leaving the home as she keeps getting a bill for the supposed 'care package’ that was taken away from her 7 months ago? £200 a month for hoovering, dishes and a shower? She has had none of it but is still being charged? Guess who is contacting a bloody care manager this Tuesday?! Here we go again! Erin and I did take the staff a bucket full of rice crispie cakes that we made this morning, so at least they have a bit of a sugar rush with their coffee! Husband cooked and I took Mum back to the home at 5pm. Norton is my leach at the moment (actually; hes always my leach) and he watched me intently as I got Mum into the car - I told him I wouldn’t be long (as you do) and drove off. As I drove back down the lane 10 minutes later, there is Norton, half way up the bloody lane having a good sniff around and no one else has noticed he is missing! Erin tries to round him up but he has no collar on (due to the throat tumour) and he is too deaf to hear me calling him! Erin gets in a panic and starts crying so I leave the car and fetch him but he is wet and covered in mud? He had a good ten minutes of freedom but lord only knows what he was doing!
Erin delights in running into Dad and asking if he is missing something?! What a week! A beautiful week to be fair; which I really don’t want to end but reality is happening and I need to do a job search for some more hours! I’m not gonna get that little 4x4 anytime soon otherwise! The only thing I will not miss is the snoring, because quite frankly if I hadn’t have come downstairs last night at 3am I would have smothered the fooker with a pillow! Roll on undisturbed sleep is all I can say!
Have a great week all. Mille xx
