Erethistes hara (alternatively Hara hara) is the archetypal moth or butterfly catfish, for which reason I shall describe this species as the common moth catfish, though I have also seen it labelled as 'Kosi hara'. Moth catfishes are collectively known as the 'haras', although the genus Hara is very arguably a junior synonym of Erethistes, and does not properly include all moth catfishes when it is regarded as distinct. Sources indicate that E. hara reaches lengths of 13 centimeters, but a more common length would be closer to 8 centimeters, or around 3 inches long.

Recorded from the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Irrawaddy drainage systems of Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and India, this moth catfish is an inhabitant of slow moving rivers and hillstreams. Moth catfish can be difficult to identify to species, even for catfish experts, and more than one species may be sympatric. For this reason fish that are members of different species, may be exported and labelled together in the same shipment. Their precise identity is little to fret about.

The genus Erethistes is part of a cluster of fishes, which also includes the homalopterid loaches, that colonised the northern regions of India via the 'Assam gateway'. Their origins are in the area from southern China, south into northern, non-tropical mainland Southeast Asia. The Assam gateway - the eastern Himalayas, Assam, and Burma - is a melting pot for fishes of different geographical origins, and also possesses its own endemic genera. The region as a conduit has allowed fishes of eastern origin, to colonise as far west as Kashmir.

Though the catfishes are among the more familiar clades of aquarium fishes, not all subclades of catfish are equally represented in the aquarium trade. Thus a good range of their diversity and disparity, remains obscure or unknown to the average aquarium manager, although they are surely familiar with certain loricaroids - the 'corys' and 'plecs' of South America - and probably the genus Synodontis, the Pimelodus pictus, and a few tankbusters. Among the less familiar catfishes, are species suited or ordinarily sized home aquariums, such as the moth catfishes.

Erethistids are a monophyletic clade of Asiatic catfishes, known collectively as the moth catfishes, that together with some related Asian catfishes, including the enormous goonch, comprise a clade named the sisoroids. Some of the sisoroid subclades, the amblycipitids and akysids, are obscure even to non-specialists. The sisoroids may be more familiar, because they include the mighty goonch, a sensational species which attracts dubious folklore, and the attention of game fishermen. Although sisoroids are not the most diverse or best studied catfishes, comparing the megafaunal goonch to the moth catfishes, illustrates the good disparity in this important Asian clade

A bone of contention involves the morphological similarities, between the erethistid moth catfishes of Asia, and the South American banjo catfishes, though a close kinship makes very little geographical sense. Nonetheless the morphological support for the relationship is robust, and is quite hard to dismiss, even though parallel evolution is thought to be responsible for similarities between other pairs of similar Old and New World catfish clades; the apparent closeness of the Neotoipical pimelodoids to the Asian bagrids, or of the African squeakers to the Neotropical doradoids.

The anatomy of catfishes is subject to a lot of parallel evolution. Indeed one study points out a good deal of similarity between sisoroids, loricaroids such as 'corys' and 'plecs', frogmouth catfishes, walking and stinging catfishes, and banjo catfishes. Though erethistid moth catfishes and aspredinid banjo catfishes look and behave similarly, which might lead to false positives, the degree of coincidence required would be extraordinary, much beyond, for example, the resemblance placental canids and sabertooth cats, to certain marsupial counterparts.

The waters of the rivers Hooghly, Kosi and Bagmati, were E. horai is known to be a common species, possess pH values that fluctuate per the month, but should be thought of as circumneutral, and they are lower after the monsoon, and most elevated before it. A pH value of 6.5 to 8 might be recommended in the aquarium, for fish from these rivers. The best advice would be to avoid extremes of pH, and not to create too sudden shifts in its value. The water temperature recorded in these rivers is 15 to 36 degrees centigrade, so ordinary tropical fish tank temperatures should suffice.

Though these catfish have a reputation as difficult to acclimatize to aquarium life, and for rejecting dried proprietary foods, they should readily accept defrosted foods as provided for insectivorous freshwater fish. The most important aquascaping requirement for these catfish, is a soft substrate, but living, growing plants are also authentic. These peaceful little catfishes are compatible together, and with schooling community fishes such as small cyprinids from the same kinds of riverine habitat.

so now he only allows follows from people he knows and trusts which means literally just the kiridai team, imayoshi, maybe a couple classmates, and his mum 

and then within that circle, he has the other kiridai boys on his close friends list and they’re the ones who see the stories that ‘reveal his true nature’ 

like hanamiya sees that someone who played against him has made a post about their journey going through shoulder rehab (no guessing who gave them their shoulder issues), so he reposts that post to his close friends story with the caption “time for a round two?”

meanwhile the posts his mum sees are just pictures of the kiridai cat or pages from some books he’s been reading recently

(n.b. hanamiya’s mum very rarely uses instagram. she only uses the account to keep up with family members, and only made it in the first place because hanamiya had just made his and she wanted to make sure he didn’t get cyberbullied. 

meanwhile her son is the one who has been repeatedly suspended from instagram for bullying.)

Hara Kazuya

has a lot of accounts and if not for the fact that he has basketball and other hobbies he would be chronically online

so there’s one main account which has just a couple photos that make him look cool (a photo of him dunking, or him drumming with good lighting) and occasionally he’ll post a picture on his stories of the city under a dawn sky and a note of the time so everyone knows he’s out grinding streetball at stupid o’clock. 

the main account is his only public account and he only really has it so that, if anyone (family friends, basketball players from other schools) search him up, those curated posts are all they’ll see. he only posts that occasional story in order to see if anyone’s been stalking him.

then there’s the finsta which is what he’s most active on. he posts several times a week on this account and the posts are all either 1) shitposts and memes that make little to no sense, 2) pictures of fellow kiridai members at very bad angles, or 3) photos from matches that he wants to mock, like a picture of kiyoshi’s face in agony as his knee got broken with the caption “tfw tanaka-sensei sets a pop quiz.”

and finally hara has his assortment of troll accounts, most of which he uses to pretend to be a high school girl living in the general Tokyo area so that he can catfish classmates when he’s bored. 

hara has so many of these accounts that he’s created a cinematic universe of his own with elaborate storylines about the tumultuous friendships between these non-existent girls. they’ve become kiridai’s answer to d&d whenever the boys are bored.

plus these catfish accounts have now become strategic. several of the ‘girls’ are in talking stages, and even online relationships with, basketball players from other schools. this means that a) hara can get intel from the players and b) as soon as any important match comes around, he breaks up with/ghosts the guy, in the hope that it’ll make them place worse.

it goes without saying that it was hanamiya who invented this innovative technique of psychological warfare but hara’s the one who puts the hours in - to the point where it would be a little suspicious how well he can pretend to be a teen girl in love if not for the shit-eating grin on his face whenever he goes through his collection of screenshots of messages begging “her” to take them back

Furuhashi Kojiro 

has two Instagram accounts

account number one is the one his teammates/family/friends follow. it’s a private account that he doesn’t use very much apart from liking friends’ posts. he has a few photos on there, but mostly photos of scenery from holidays

account number two is public, with around 10k followers. it’s completely anonymous and no one irl knows he has it. this account posts quite regularly and every post is an aesthetic picture either of his plants or what he’s baked recently. and when i say aesthetic, i mean aesthetic: the perfect warm lighting and usually some berries or something framing the centrepiece of the photo. 

the captions are usually quite short and wholesome: “making melonpan can be difficult but i find the challenge refreshing” “when the days become stressful, i turn to these larch bonsai to remind myself to stand tall” “i am trying a new macaroon recipe. may it bring great riches.”

he’s also started posting some reels on this account, mostly timelapses of bread rising or plants growing etc

furu uses very few hashtags but somehow still gets super high engagement. his followers adore him and have collectively assumed he’s a fem lesbian living in the countryside somewhere with her beloved girlfriend. (furuhashi naturally never corrects anyone because he wants to keep it anonymous.) the comments are all “cottagecore queen” “i owe all my mental health to you” “the only unproblematic account on Instagram” 

so yeah, on instagram, furu is considered an angel

this man has not posted a single photo where he is not shirtless

and his stories are like 30% videos from streetball practice and 70% thirst traps which he pretends he’s posting to show his gains... but everyone knows he’s just posting them to try attract the three women who followed him back

his following is around 50% ‘baddies’, 45% nba players, and 5% friends and a few streetballers that he’s played against before

(he follows very few streetballers because he thinks it’s beneath him to follow losers and see how they’re improving. he’s so good at basketball he has no need for that, duh.)

no profile photo, no posts: 100% anonymous account. man just uses his Instagram account to get material to jerk off too - pretty much every single account he follows is of an onlyfans model. (he would still be following some female classmates and kise’s ex girlfriend if not for the fact that they’ve all blocked him.)

in the end, haizaki has no friends to interact with and no aesthetic life he can post about, so why would be bother having a more social instagram

added bonus of the anonymous account is that he can use it to stalk others - and he does like his stalking. 

sometimes he stalks the gom’s accounts, and he tells himself it’s just to make fun of them being desperate for likes or looking pretentious, but really he gets a “what could have been” feeling from scrolling through all the photos (and it hurts -- especially seeing videos of them playing together like back in middle school.)

and sometimes haizaki stalks his fukuda sogo teammates. again, he tells himself it’s just to mock them, and he’ll see photos of them hanging out together and be like “what fucking losers who would want to be seen with them.” but there’s a little pang of loneliness in his heart all the same.

Yamazaki Hiroshi

has had the same instagram account since he was 10 and he never deletes or archives any posts so if you scroll far down enough, you’ll find videos of pre-pubescent him and hara doing ‘parkour’ (literally just jumping over benches and off swings) or those chain posts like “share this with five friends or you’ll be haunted forever.)

zaki’s is a private account with a couple hundred followers - his teammates obviously but also family, cousins, some classmates, some of hara’s catfish accounts, and even a couple fellow high school basketballers from distant enough teams that they somehow haven’t realised that zaki is a member of the infamous kiridai. 

he posts semi-regularly and mostly just very normal, mundane posts - photos from family holidays, a tasty udon noodle bowl he had the other day and maybe the occasional streetball photo (typically with one of the kiridai boys in the frame instead of zaki – zaki’s not a huge fan of photos of himself)

zaki’s feed is mostly hara’s shitposts and also streaming clips from his various video games, and if you do ever see his account in the ‘wild’, it will be him backing up hara’s finsta after hara made a particularly outrageous comment somewhere

because a real friendship takes two people: Person 1 who just stirs shit up, and Person 2 who defends Person 2’s shit-stirring by cursing out every commenter who criticises them

You may know her by the user VeeVeey2k, neuvibao, or Xinyismuu in the Honkai star rail community, which she has joined earlier this year pretending to be a blasian. Her Tumblr user at this very moment is @/blkneuvilette

It is crucial that we document down this person's online activities, as we have also included new evidence of catfishing by directly contacting various victims for confirmation of details. In addition to linking the document, we will also be providing a condensed version of the contents below "Read more", but we strongly urge you all to read the document for full context.

Firstly, we strongly recommend you to read through user @happyartisanreview's post regarding her comprehensive history of inappropriate conduct with minors. They also regularly update on the current users of Merlin/Vee.

We also recommend going through the last thread by user blusongbird001 on twitter, as they have also linked down other relevant threads on the site regarding her previous identities.

It has come to our attention, after being reached out to, and having reached out to multiple people ourselves, that Merlin (who is pretending to be a blasian called “Xinran”, nicknamed Vee), along with her friends/bf are holding NSFW conversations in her server full of minors, as well as harassing/threatening to doxx various victims in the fandom.

INAPROPPRIATE INTERACTIONS WITH MINORS

I cannot stress this enough. It is so incredibly inappropriate for someone of such a history to continue to purposefully put herself (and her boyfriend) within the same space as minors and subject them to NSFW conversations.

Especially when she herself has promised to not make any more servers with minors in the past. Yet she and her bf Mika/Mio (@/zxmikah on twitter) who has admitted to believe there were “links between merlin and Vee”, proceeds to have nsfw conversations about his bathroom habits in their server with minors as young as 13. This should not be happening at all.

HARASSMENT AGAINST MINORS (NSFW)

Merlin and her friends have also in the past few months, harassed several minors aged between 13-15, threatened to dox them, allowed NSFW comments/harassment to be made by her friends towards these minors All with absolutely zero attempts to even stop or regulate her server either.

And as Merlin/Vee’s boyfriend was an active participant in harassing the victims mentioned, we were also requested to include this thread that was made last month regarding his islamaphobia in the Genshin community.

Merlin/Vee has also found the address of the underaged victims, referred to as “C” in the doc, and claimed in her own public server that she can “just decide one day to drop her house address”. For context, Merlin currently racefakes as a Chinese nicknamed “Xinyi”

Needless to say it is incredibly inappropriate and weird of Merlin/Vee to keep track of a 13 year old minor (who has already blocked her at this point), and claim that the minors’ family circumstances were a result of Merlin practicing Juju..?

CATFISHING

Merlin/Vee has also CATFISHED complete strangers on her previous AND current alt, claiming these individuals to be her sister and parents, all the whilst fabricating their family history, race, occupations, and even claiming emotional abuse while using their faces.

We were fortunately able to reach out to two of the catfished individuals, and discovered that the “father” and “sister” merlin/Vee claimed were hers were in fact FROM THE SAME FAMILY. They both have NOTHING to do with Merlin, Vee, Xinyi, Tiana or any other names she goes by.

We were given full permission by Luisa to post the screenshots above. Luisa and her whole family are aware of what has transpired and that their photos were used without their consent. We have also handed over every relevant information and lies Merlin has spread all the way from last year on her alt up to this month on her current account that may possibly endanger or defame Luisa’s family in any way.

Merlin claiming her father works in the Big 4 of Ireland, using Luisa's father's photos. Luisa has already confirmed that this is a lie.

We also want to point out that Merlin has catfished this family as her own on her PAST ALT with no regards to real life consequences at all.

There is absolutely zero reason and justifications for any of the things said and done by Merlin/Vee towards her dozens of victims, past and present. Especially when she is committing acts of harassment towards minors under a false identity and defaming someone else’s family.

RACEFAKING AND RELIGION RELATED MATTERS

Regarding her racefaking- This is a topic that many of us have already gone over again and again. I, along with many other fellow Asian contributors are deeply exhausted at this point to even have to fight on what has already been proven.

No matter how much she tries to convince people that she is related to Ramses II, that shes Chinese Hokkien and attends “marriage tea parties” arranged by her great aunt, that she’s related to the families she catfished- She has never been any of these and never will be.

Keep in mind that Merlin (who claims to be Chinese) has a TikTok account dedicated to posting translations for HSR. If she is indeed Chinese and a mandarin speaker, how did she manage to mess up such a simple phrase this badly? Did your DeepL hit the usage limit that day?

And as per her old habits of finding new nationalities to collect every week, she has also recently started identifying as part Filipino, East Asian, as well as Indian again. All the whilst claiming that Hokkien and Vietnamese are alike. (They are nothing of the sort).

She also has a long history of pretending to be a muslim all the whilst saying things like this.

HER IDENTITY

Merlin/Vee has repeatedly built up the inconsistencies towards her own identity, race, culture, nationality and religion while exhibiting discriminatory behaviour towards the multiple communities and other religious groups that she is not a part of.

Going so far as to catfish people she has mutual friends with and use their family’s photos to spread lies about their father simply shows Merlin’s delusions regarding the “lack” of consequences of her own actions.

Merlin seems to have forgotten that she posted her own BIRTHDAY information on her previous alt, which we have already proven to be her account. The birth year shows 2004, not 2001.

How convenient is it that “Xinyi” shares the same birthday, surname, location, catfish victims, IRL social circle and even face and injuries when she has claimed she knew nothing about Merlin?

You know, of all the choices there are, glass catfish are definitely among the better ones since I don’t think they’d stress your Betta out too much. The only thing I fear, however, is that those long feelers would prove irresistible to a bitey Betta. If you want to keep your Betta with other fish, my favorite choices are kuhli loaches and maybe Hara jerdoni if you can find them. They just wriggle around on the bottom of the tank so the two species won’t come across each other much.

I'm sorry, but what are anchor cats? And what is a hardy shrimp that I can try to breed in a 10 gallon? Would amano shrimp work? How big do those get?

Anchor cats are hara jerdoni, really tiny, cute catfish that are undemanding and sneaky. They’re nocturnal so they spend most of their day hidden among leaves, driftwood or hides and come out at night to look for food, which is why it’s recommended to feed them only after you shut off the lights, and to have relatively dim lighting.

They’re about as long as a big cherry shrimp.

Speaking of cherry shrimp, neocaridina are great, hardy shrimp for a 10 gallon. Amanos don’t breed in fresh iirc, but neos will breed plentifully.

There aren’t a ton of options for a 10 gallon unfortunately. A single dwarf gourami, honey gourami, or sparkling gourami would be doable. You could also look into asian stone catfish (Hara jerdoni) but they’re VERY shy & you may never see them. It would also be minimum for a single wild betta in the splendens complex (imbellis, smaragdina, mahachaiensis, etc) but they tend to be a lot harder to find than domestic betta and on the pricier end. They do tend to be healthier, though, and able to move much more easily compared to a long finned domestic betta. A dwarf pea puffer is another option.

Currently debating what to put in my new 10 gallon. Thinkin about chili rasboras or pygmy corys...dunno if I'm gonna be able to find those tho. We'll see :)

Hello! I have a couple questions I was hoping you could help with, I keep getting really mixed answers online. How do I feed my betta frozen food from the little blister pack things that have bloodworms or mysis shrimp? Also, do you have any recommendations for stocking a 10 or 20 g? I want to get another tank besides my betta but I want to try and expand because I've had many bettas in the past. Thank you!

Hi there anon! thanks for the ask :D hopefully I can be of some help to you ^-^How do I feed my betta frozen food from the little blister pack things that have bloodworms or mysis shrimp?I actually had to ask this question myself a few weeks ago :p the most helpful answer that I got was: pop out a whole cube from the pack, take a hot knife and cut off a small piece of the cube. Put the rest of the frozen cube back in the little blister pack (put the whole pack of food in a baggie of some sort) and put that back in the freezer. Then take that little bit that you cut off and defrost it in dechlorinated water, and feed the worms of shrimp to your fish! :p i used some tongs to feed mine and my fish loved it! :D

Also, do you have any recommendations for stocking a 10 or 20 g? I want to get another tank besides my betta but I want to try and expand because I’ve had many bettas in the past. Some of these fish are much hardier, and therefore easier to keep, than other fish. Some require schools, some require a species-only tank, others require tropical or temperate waters.
