There's this person close to me that keeps doing something that, not only is just straight up quite rude about a certain topic, but it's more ignorant.

Bro can tell me about characters they love like some dudes from some type of dating sim with sensitive topics or portal 2 and I still remember certain elements about the said character they talked about

But if when I talk about Arashi Narukami, a Transgender character, to which I always refer with words (female, women, queen) and pronouns (she/her/herself), bro can't remember shit or even her gender??

Recently on the Engstars HappyEle translated idk what story where Tetora referred to Naru as "him" and I had this silly idea to email the company and just throw insults (HAPPYELE YOU HAD ONE JOB.) and wrote a wall of things I'd say to them in my native language.

I went to rant to this friend about it by asking "how can I send an anonymous email?" And then send the wall of what I would say. I also said that the whole fandom is enraged about it (maybe not whole since there's still some people who refer to Arashi as a man sleep with one eye open bi-) and they asked me something like "do you not see how overblown this is? Everyone in the fandom mad cuz the company that made the character called them a he/him?" YES. AND THEY ASKED "Is his gender fanon?" And quickly edited to "their" asap.

I felt rage and had to hold it to try to explain to them that it is canon. LIKE I TELL YOU "BCS SHE IS A TRANS WOMAN" AND YET YOU ASK "fanon or canon?" UGYCYCVVUYCYCVYYVVYJHCXYH

Not to mention I sent them screenshots of someone on Arashi's wiki explaining her gender over the years in ! Era and !! Era and why refering to trans women as they/them sometimes is wrong.

Not that it's just straight up rude since I've TOLD you lots of times when I talked about Arashi, but you're just straight up fcking ignorant. Sure, I don't care about your characters or your interests that much, but at least I remember things about the characters you always yap about. Do better.

Can I also add a very unrelated thing to the discussion? I don't like the new art direction, it seems a bit more juvinile than before, and when it comes to Akatsuki's new splash art, why did they make them have extra hair? it makes Keito look unorganised which is not in character, and Kuro looks younger and less buff, and Souma looks different in a way I can't really point to. Recent Ensemble stars art in general is a bit weird to me and seemed a bit squashed? like the heads are weirdly smaller and the mouths are bigger, idk, it just seems not really to the same quality as before.

you do see my point though, I was saying that yes a piece of media can have a character imply they are queer, but it’s frustrating when they won’t explicitly confirm such, because of (in the case of… checks app store purchase statistics…. A multi million dollar game franchise!) the need to market to as many people as possible. Shumika will never be “canon” because some people just don’t like shumika and won’t spend money on the game if shu and mika are in a relationship, whether or not that’s because they like the ship or the characters or are genuinely homophobic or whatnot. If the writing team cared about telling a love story, they would tell a love story, not go “well maybe they’re in love, it’s up to viewer interpretation!” like this works, sometimes it adds to the meaning of the work, but enstars really doesn’t have an excuse for their constant “this character might have feelings for this other character, but we’ll never have them say it out loud!” except the fact it makes them a lot of money, since they can market to people who like a character being the way they want that character to be, whether that’s with that character being in love with another in game character or self-shipping or whatever else. Outside of shipping, this is why some characters like Shinobu haven’t changed despite wanting to change (he continuously talks about how he wants to be more mature and taken seriously but his cards continue to make him look small and cute because his fans like that about him and god forbid we change anything!) I just think enstars should not be your first thought when someone asks you about a good piece of queer media because they’re doing just about the same job as large cast games with characters of the same gender (minus Arashi) who continue to have characters go “we’ll do all these things to imply we could be in love, but we’ll never have our characters actually date! teehee!”

i can understand being frustrated about your ships not being "confirmed", but the obsession with what is "canon" and "not canon" is just straight up not a very interesting discussion to have. what happyele's or the writers' agenda is is not of particular importance to me. one of the first things they teach you in classes about media analysis is that once a work is out there, the intentions of the creator no longer matter. the only thing that matters in your analysis is your own thoughts and the way you interpret a text.

if we were having a conversation about how much the creator of something sucks, then sure, talk about that all you want, but i am specifically referring to discussions about the piece of media and these characters and their relationships and their growth and the themes of the work etc. those things are removed from whether or not the company writes the way they do because of profit motives or whatever. companies make money, that's just what to expect. if you want art that is free of profit motives, read something by an independent creator.

even so, it feels strange to place enstars into the bucket of "stuff that should be gayer but the bad company that makes it wont let it be" because the characters ARE so very openly queer. there are so many instances in it where characters pour their heart out to each other or offer themselves to another character in beautiful and poetic ways, and i think it's wrong to claim it doesn't count because they didn't confirm their relationship status at the end of it. if you ask me, there is absolutely no way to interpret enstars in a way completely free of queerness. there is so much explicitly queer text that ignoring it is just plain incorrect. but, if homophobic people like this game and choose to look the other way at all of the gay shit, again, that is not my problem.

why is canonization the only thing that matters? is a shitty BL with awful writing better and more worthwhile than enstars as a queer narrative because the characters had explicit gay sex on screen? are poorly written gay characters in the background of other media with nothing going on more worth talking about than shumika or wataei or rinniki or whoever else just because they say the words 'i'm gay' out loud?

queerness is so much more than all of that. it is so much more than labels and it is so much more than relationships that are easy to understand. it is so much more than the extremely narrow view of it that the internet has concocted about it over the last few years, where you’re only allowed to talk about queerness if you yourself are openly queer and out of the closet, and even then you’re only allowed to make art that makes for “good representation.” that is just so incredibly limiting. i would rather tons of companies who are trying to profit off fujoshis make vaguely gay media with unconfirmed romances and relationships that aren't easily defined by labels than have less queer art in the world.

more queer art means more queer people who will find something to really connect to. more queer art means telling more queer stories. why should who is allowed to write lgbtq media be limited? why should the kind of media people are allowed to make be limited?

its fine to criticize happyelements if youre unsatisfied with the way they do things, im not always 100% in love with everything they do either. i wouldn't even consider enstars to be the worlds' best example of a queer piece of media. but no one is forcing you to like or engage with it or give the company money if you're unhappy with how they write and market their game. they don't owe anyone explicit confirmation that any of their characters are dating, and it doesn't even matter if they do provide that confirmation or not.

regardless of who made it or for what reason, queer stories are worth talking about, "canon" or not.

ABT THE SWITCH CLIMAX STORY THING. I AGREE WITH U SO MUCH i need more tsumugi and sora interaction please !??! Like it feels like they barely have anything going on sometimes, like they do have interactions but idk its like !? The fact that theyre a trio and yet their relationship feels underdeveloped makes me sad bc. I love both sora and mugi sm!??! Idk if im making sense like i know they do interact and what is there I enjoy (like idk i think its funny how they kinda take turns taking care of each other, tsumugi being his usual mommy self and sora being very like ... YEAAAAA i love sora and tsumugis dynamic SOOOOO MUCHHHHHH i love how silly they can get yet also be so tender..... such as tsumugi trying to meet sora at his level when there is a conflict, such as him attempting to join him in playing with the plushies mugi had made to more easily converse with him (although it didnt work out too well bc tsumugi kinda sucked at it AKJHSDFJKH) LIKE!! like with natsume and tsumugi theres. well. Theres alot. you got them meeting in childhood, the war, theyve truly been through thick and thin together and that weight carries into how they interact

with natsume and sora they too met in childhood, aswell as natsume being very protective over sora due to his own internal struggles and sora deeply looking up to natsume (and tsumugi ofc! but natsume is his shisho!) which also carries into how they interact

tsumugi and sora dont really have this ?? at least not to the same extent. so i guess in contrast their dynamic ends up feeling shallow. that aswell as shipbait sells and people dont exactly ship those two very often so it tends to take a backseat in favor of natsume pairs JDKHSJKFH I JUST. GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO BOND OVER!!! PROPERLY!!!!!!! since they DONT have the same foundation with each other as they do natsume that makes this a prime opportunity to BUILD ONE!! theres SO much potential for those two but it just never gets utilized properly....... so many missed opportunities............... happyele dont fuck this up for me

So sorry, I kept writing up my reply in my head and then forgetting to answer. It's been a while so I may of forgetting most of the questions^^

First impressions:

When I first heard of our dear Mama, I was amused. Here is my boyfriend, @eviltranskanata, explaining enstar characters to me and then he brought up a guy calling himself "Mama". I was instinctly hooked. He was chaotic and I always love characters like Mama. A mystery, but oh so silly. I just found him interesting.

Impressions now:

I still find him just as interesting and I just have no idea how he managed to worm his way into my heart. I still find him interesting and just generally a complex character. I still need to read his stories. If you're in a enstars discord server with me (looks at Checkmate cafe), you'll know some of my thoughts on him. He's complex, an asshole, and just please Happyele let him heal please! Give him to me!

Story idea?:

I actually was planning on writing a Watamada scene for this (hence why it took me so long to answer), but my motivation sucks ass. Had a thought of them being in their dorm room....making...out.... That's it. A break down of their masks, giggling and being just...people. sparkle sparkle. Or something like a first date or just...something nice and warm. Maybe a little angst but my heart can't handle too much angst when it comes to...well, Mama.

Fandom?:

This is where I admit I forgot the rest of the questions (I'm so bad at remembering things and I can't find the post again TwT). I actually don't really know how the fandom interprets him, I kinda only engage in a small portion of the fandom here on tumblr. And I end up blocking a lot of KohakuxMadara blogs/ships because....dude....DUDE! Otherwise from that, not..much. I know Madara isn't really popular in general (as I heard), and I don't know if I should count that as a blessing or as a curse. Because on one end: People overlook just how complex he is and how much of a hot mess he is(and more). But on the other end: people would end up simplifying him, just like they did with other characters, to fulfill a ship. Talking of ships, I do have my favourite trio of ships (Madarei, WataMama, and Madaleo), but I feel like who he is right now(as in his character atm)...wouldn't exactly be possible due to how many barriers he has up. This is of course my view of him, and remember that I kinda...just only read Meteor Impact. Reading Enstar stories, in its current format, is kinda hard for me to do. Mostly the time aspect of it really stops me, I wish there was an audio format for it.

So sorry for forgetting the rest of the questions, but honestly! Feel free to send me more characters, I would love to tell you guys my thoughts.

honestly I wonder how happyele’s writing team functions because did no one ever said “hey this is a bad idea the fans are gonna go ballistic” . Are they that out of touch with their fans? I know the fandom sucks ass and gets much worse every year but if you think about it the fans being like that is the result of their shitty story writing. Like I get it they hid the writer’s name because of the fans toxicity but why are the stories going that way??? It’s just a never ending circle of bad stuff at this point.

happyelements has sucked and enstars has been going downhill as of late, but with the recent transphobia on engstars, the ableism in vs gladiator, the orientalism in the midosora cross scout, and now this blatant racism towards ibuki, all in the past 4-5 months mind you, i cannot bring myself to be okay with openly endorsing the franchise

i took down my enstars edits since im no longer comfortable supporting the franchise or being associated with it after happyelements poor choice to japanize an indigenous character

the burning of alexandria sucks bc now we have interpretations of characters through 1. word of mouth 2. enstars memes 3. !! era stories. these all lowered the average media literacy lvl to below the earths core.

i am definitely on ur side even if i dont have much context for this ask. theyre doing a lot better now, izumi can still be a lil weirdo but its definitely not as bad as it used to be. most importantly, makoto trusts him more now and isnt prone to running away which i think is an extremely positive thing in his own character development and in their dynamic!!

and dont get me wrong early interactions btw the two were ungodly terrible, izumis actions were comically evil and akira was so clearly gunning for a certain dynamic btw the two that were still feeling the negative effects of, but it rlly annoys me like no other when ppl disregard leos importance in their dynamic bc while it is a dependency born from a combination from early relationships w him and his parents, it was leos disappearance that further strengthened that need for control and fueled izumi mistaken idea that he can "protect" makoto like he failed w leo. this is part of why izuleo bodies the competition. the rest is that they have synced menstrual cycles.

and this is not counting that recent story where akira decided "fuck this character development" and justified every izumi action by saying he was jet lagged and tired... but anyways. i do hate when ppl view izmk as a funny lil joke, it pisses me off bc izumi is still learning to recognize makoto as a person instead of an object that he can be possessive over.... im sorry i made this my ranting place. you should make roles in ur server labeled "you receive a gummy worm" and "you do not".
