Garden Grove features a number of movie theaters, but Starlight Cinemas always offers convenient show times and a great movie selection. Bring the whole family to this theater, where kiddos are welcomed with open arms.Patrons can park in a lot near Starlight Cinemas or take advantage of the generous street parking. Whatever you're in the mood for, Starlight Cinemas has.

Please read this oneI don’t usually write reviews but the experience me and my wife had is unbelievable My wife was in a car wreck on 1-24-15 and hurt her back but still wanted to see a movie for Valentine’s day 2-14-15 so I got the tickets and went I asked the lady at the door if my wife could Just sit on bench until movie time and she got a bad attitude problem with me so I asked to see The manager she came out and I told her about the problem she seemed like she didnt care at all. But she finally let my wife sit then all we heard was laughing and giggling from them made my wife feel very bad and very uncomfortable we left and won’t be back ever.By the way me and my daughter usually go to the movies there at least once a week sometimes twice a week and have been going there for almost four years now and the guy’s that work there on the weekdays are great very kind and never any Problems at all.

Was happy with the pricing of the movies here. First run movies at discounted prices. The theaters are small, but comfortable. I first saw a movie here in 1987 and it hasnt changed much, except the technology. What disappointed me were the lights that never turn off and when the movie starts nobody closes the doors (I went to the back and closed the doors myself, nothing I could do about the lights). How can one really enjoy a movie theater experience with lights in the ceiling shining down in your eyes.I came here for 3D, because ONLY the Dolby Digital 3D works for me, the crappy RealD 3D doesnt work nearly as well. Then as it turned out the movie I wanted to see was not being shown in 3D at all.I would go back again, but probably sit more towards the front away from the spotlights and open doors.

This place and staff has always given me a pleasurable experience and have gone on various days and times for the last 5yrs Even going during regular hours/days but frequent the senior/family days & hours. Been there during peak hrs & always someone at doors ready to go in and clean soon as a movie is over. Cant go to the Regals or Edwards and the like for top movies popcorn and drinks for the same price or less than what others charge just to get in the doors! Too bad Steve Crow had a bad experience, I have never seen or heard of such a thing all the times Ive gone. Im even greeted & asked where my friend is when I go alone. And acknowledged when Ive not been seen for awhile! Local theaters always best over commercial places anytime!

I see a lot of people complaining about the employees and the seats and screens. Download blackberry handheld software for 8520. I have never had a problem with any of the employees. They arent really friendly, but have never been rude to me or any of my kids. Sure it s small, but for the value, worth it for me. We could never afford to see a movie otherwise. If you get their saver card, you get a free ticket for every four you buy, even on family night. Plus you get free popcorn and free refills on popcorn and soda. Tip..go early in family nights, you will be in line for a bit, and it will fill up.

Dont be fooled by the price and Starlight brand. This place has almost nothing else in common with other Starlights. No reserved seating. No seats in the center (aisle runs down the middle). Small, dim screen. But the other Starlights (Triangle Square in Costa Mesa, Cinema City in Anaheim) have identical pricing and feature reserved seating, center seats, and larger screens, as well as having more total screens, more seats per screen, and nicer aesthetics. Go to those ones if possible. Those actually deserve the '4 Star' nomenclature.

Hate it. We came to watch sherlock holmes and half way through my lady went to use the restrooms and got kicked out cause the management said she was trying to jump movies. she had the ticket stub and she wasnt trying to jump movie.. she waited out side in the cold. while i was waiting for her to return. finally i went out side to look for her and i was very shocked to find out what had happened.. Never again will we ever come here again. Go some where else management seemed racist..

I go to this theater almost exclusively esp so that we could go bowling before or after a movie: $7 refillable (one time before the movie ends) popcorn, clean theater, good sound system, friendly staff. Prices are catching up to that of UA and Regency..$9/adult is more than at some other places; so we are pulling the reins a tad. Maybe it pays to be a frequent movie pass goer..then again, we should head out to the state parks and outdoors more. Head out and shape up, America!

i think this is a fantastic bargain to go to the movies in these most difficult of times. the popcorn is great ..the seating is good and the value is fabulous. we try to make it every Tuesday. i found the employees to be professional and courtesy so i suppose everyone has there opinion and mine is that keep the price low and the audiences will come. thanks.

The movie industry is my passion. When I was a teen I loved going to the cinema. This place is comfy, small and a great place to take out your girlfriend. However last time my girlfriend and I went everything was just dirty. Spit bubble gums, popcorn and smelly restrooms. Not a romantic experience at all. I hope they take some actions!

Is this as fancy as Bella Terra? No. But as far as a discount theater is concerned, this is a definite 5 star theater! Everyone has been nothing but polite and friendly. Only 4 movies at a time but, for the price, im willing to wait a while until they change the options! And any theater with $1 hot dogs is fine by me.

Absolutely love this theater, $6 Tuesday, Thursdays, and Sundays every week are an excellent value. Though it may not be as large as the bigger theaters, the movie viewing experience is still very enjoyable, especially given the price. The employees are friendly and the popcorn is delicious

S.O.S. (State of Sunshine) - Chapter 2
Chapter Two
“Gymnastics?  Is that really something she should be focusing on right now?  School starts in a few weeks, Evelyn.  I think the focus should be getting her ready for that.  The gymnastics can wait.”
“Can we talk about this later?” Evelyn said in a loud whisper before taking sip of her water.
“Fine.  But it is something that we need to discuss.”  Evelyn nodded.  “In depth.”
Hannah ran up to Evelyn as soon as she turned the corner into the living room.  “Miss Natalia knows someone who can coach me!  His name is Lance Tucker!”  What the hell kind of a name was Lance Tucker?  It sounded like a porno name or some ridiculous model.  Evelyn bit her lip to keep from laughing at it.
“Oh?”
“Yeah!  He was her old student and he’s living in Florida now.  His gym is … where is it, Miss Natalia?”
“Treasure Island,” the Russian replied.  Lance Tucker from Treasure Island?  The porno wrote itself!  This time, Evelyn let a giggle slip.  She was suddenly grateful to this Lance whom she’d never met - he gave her her first laugh in a long time.  Miss Natalia’s eyebrow rose in consternation.  Evelyn cleared her throat and smiled sheepishly at her.  “This is close to you, no?”
“About a half hour.  I … I didn’t know Treasure Island had a gym.”
“It is just a few years old.  Lance owns it.  He was my best student.  And I’ve already sent him an email about Hannah.”  Well, that was presumptuous.  What if Evelyn had said no?  Well, now it looked like she couldn’t.  “He said he would meet her.  Is Tuesday good for you?”  This was happening way too fast.
“I have meetings all day,” Evelyn replied.
“I will email him.  He will stay late.  Meet you after your meetings.  Is this good?”
“Please, Auntie Evelyn?”  That was the first time Hannah had called her that since she was 5.  That, accompanied with the little pout she was throwing her, made Evelyn’s self-described small, shriveled heart swell in her chest.  “Can we meet him?  Please?”
“I’ll be able to get there by 7, if he can stay that long.”
“He will do this.  For me, and for Hannah.  Once he sees what she can do, I’m sure he’ll agree to coach her.”
“Wonderful.”
It took some coaxing, but eventually Ben agreed that having something familiar to Hannah in a new and scary place was a good idea.  He wasn’t keen on gymnastics either, especially because Evelyn made no qualms to him about how much she disliked it.  But they were doing this for Hannah.
Tuesday 7:20 pm
“Is that him?” Hannah asked from the back seat of Evelyn’s Audi as they pull into the parking lot of the gym.  A tall man with perfectly gelled hair, black shades and a cocky strut walked towards a red convertible right in front of the gym entrance.  He was wearing black track pants and a fitted white t-shirt that showed off his gymnast frame.  He sure looked like a Lance Tucker. “He’s leaving!”
“Hold on.”  Evelyn stumbled out of her car, gathering herself and smoothing down her pencil skirt before approaching the man who had just turned on his engine.  The stereo was blaring old school hip-hop so loudly that Lance didn’t hear Evelyn approach, nor did he hear her exclaim, “Excuse me.  EXCUSE ME!”   His head snapped towards her and his eyes moved from her pencil skirt slowly … too slowly … up to her face.  “Can you turn the music down?”
“Huh?” he asked, dipping his shades.  His eyes were ridiculously blue, a fact that Evelyn was oblivious to at the moment because the music was so loud that she could barely think.
“Music!” she shouted, motioning down.  She could have sworn she saw him role his eyes.  She gritted her teeth as he obliged her.
“Can I help you?” he asked.
“You’re Lance, right?”
“The one and only,” he said with a megawatt smile.  The man looked like he could be in an ad for whitening toothpaste.  Lance Tucker, the toothpaste model.  It sounded right.
“I’m Evelyn Burns.  I think Natalia Taylor emailed you about my niece …”  Lance stared at her.  “Hannah?”
“Oh.  Yeah.  You’re late.”
“Yes, I know.  I had a meeting in St. Pete and it ran long.  I got here as fast as I could.”
“Yeah,” Lance clicked his teeth.  “But I’m kind of big on punctuality.  I waited 20 minutes and no Hannah so …”  He revved his engine.  Really?  What an asshole.
“Look,” Evelyn took a deep breath.  “I know I’m late, but it’s not Hannah’s fault.  It’s my fault.  And she’s really excited to meet you.  Miss Natalia told her you’re the best.”
“She’s not wrong.”
“So … can we go inside and she can show you?  She’s been practicing all day.”  Evelyn didn’t want to beg - especially to a man like Lance - but she would if it meant she got to see Hannah’s smile a little longer.  Lance looked her up and down again.  She had half a mind to bite his head off for leering, but she held her tongue.
“Fine.  But I have a date at 8, so let’s make this quick.”
“Great.  Thank you so much.”
Evelyn ran through the rough gravel in her stilettos, nearly face-planting not once but twice on her way back to the car.  She was sure Lance saw - she could feel his eyes burning into her back.  Sure enough, when she turned around he was leaning against his car, arms crossed over his chest with a sly smile playing on his lips.  Evelyn wasn’t so sure about this guy.
“Mr. Tucker, this is my niece, Hannah.”
Lance’s demeanor completely changed once Hannah was between them.  He smiled widely at her, leaning over and putting his hands on his knees.  “Hiya, Hannah.  I’m Coach Tucker,” he said, emphasizing the word coach and looking up at Evelyn when he said it.
“Hi,” she said shyly with a little wave.
“I hear you’re one heck of a gymnast.  Want to show me what you can do?”  Hannah nodded.  “Wonderful.  Let’s go inside.”
“I usually don’t take on new clients this late in the year,” Lance told Evelyn from the chair behind his desk.  His office looked out onto the big open gym area where Hannah was tumbling around while they spoke about her future there.
“But-” Evelyn scooted forward in her chair opposite him.
“Not finished,” he said, holding up a long, slender finger.  Evelyn bit her lip in frustration.  “I said, I usually don’t … but Hannah has got something.”  Evelyn heaved a sigh of relief.  “I think with my help, that little girl could be a champion.”
“So, you’ll coach her?”
“It’s not going to be cheap,” he said, leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms behind his head.
“Money’s not an issue,” Evelyn said plainly.  Lance’s smile widened.  “I just really want Hannah to have something that makes her happy.  She’s new here and … I’m sure Natalia told you …”
“Her parents? Yeah.  Bummer.”  What a sweet sentiment, Evelyn thought.  She strained to keep her eyes from rolling.  “You know, tragedy can make a great athlete into a champion.”  Evelyn cocked her head to the side.  “She could be America’s sweetheart, with a story like this.”
Evelyn rose in her chair.  “I think we’ll be taking our business somewhere else.  Thank you for your time, Coach Tucker.”  She turned and walked towards the door, but Lance jumped over his desk and grabbed her arm.  She spun around, eyes wide.  She pulled her hand from his grip. “I will not let you use Hannah’s tragedy as a sob story to help further your career … if you can call it that.”
“Look.”  Lance scratched his chin.  “I’m sorry.  I …” The man looked like he’d never apologized in his life.  “Hannah has raw talent.  Enough talent to become America’s sweetheart without a sob story.”
“I know.  A fact that I’m sure other coaches in the area will fully comprehend.”
“There’s only one other coach in the area and she’s shit.”  Lance stepped closer and Evelyn stepped back, her back coming in contact with the door.  “Hannah needs me.”
“And it sounds like you need her, too.”
“Every great coach needs a star.  I’ve got some great kids here, but none that can do what she just showed me.”  He pointed to his chest.  “I’m the best chance she has.  Natalia knows it.  And I think Hannah does, too.”
“I’m not going to have Hannah’s life turned into a circus.”
“It won’t be.”  Lance stepped closer; close enough to smell his cologne.  Evelyn hated to admit that he smelled amazing.  “She’s good.  I can make her great.  I promise you.”
“Okay,” Evelyn sighed.  There was that smile again - big and cocky and luminous.  “But you have to promise me that you will never talk about her personal life to the press.  The focus is on Hannah and the sport and nothing else.  Understood?”
“Wow,” Lance said with a little chuckle.  “You’re almost intimidating.”  He hadn’t seen the worst of her and something inside Evelyn told her that he definitely would.
“I’m good at getting what I want,” she said, tucking a loose strand of her otherwise perfect bobbed haircut behind her ear.
“That makes two of us,” he said with a wink.  If Evelyn were attracted to pretty boys like  him, that would have almost worked.  When he saw that it had no effect, his smile shrunk.  He turned, walking over to his desk and snatching a card from a holder.  “Email me and we’ll work out a schedule for her.  It’ll be rigorous, but from what I remember from learning from Miss Natalia, I’m sure Hannah’s ready for it.”
“Thank you.  I’ll be in touch.”
“Great.”  Lance looked down at his watch.  “Fuck.  It’s nearly 8.”
“We’ll see ourselves out.”
“Good.  Okay.”  Lance grabbed his sunglasses, hooking them in the V of his shirt.  The sun was down, what would he need those for?
“I hope you don’t swear like that around your students,” Evelyn said from the doorway.
“What?”  Lance walked behind her.
“You just said … “ Evelyn looked around to see if Hannah was near, “fuck.”
“Did I?”  Lance smiled.  That didn’t bode well.  “No, Miss Burns …” Lance’s eyes clocked her engagement ring, “Or is it Mrs?”
“It will be Mrs. Stevens in a few months.”
“Okay then.  Miss Burnes,” he said, popping a piece of gum in his mouth.  “No, I don’t swear in front of my students.”
“See that it stays that way.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Lance mocked, standing at attention and saluting her.  When she rolled her eyes at him, he threw his head back and laughed.  “I’ll talk to you soon.  Bye, Hannah!”  He waved goofily at her.
“Bye, Coach Tucker!”
This was going to be fun.

An analysis of you belong with me like you mentioned would be awesome! Ps your angelina analysis was so good:)
*Waves at anon* Hi!Thank you, it makes me super happy that you enjoyed my analysis of Angelina; I have so much fun writingthese things 😊
Sorry this is a little late, by the way, the family dinner ran long, but here it finally is, You Belong With Me: Queer Edition! 🌈🌈🌈
Before we go any furtherI’d like to give my usual disclaimer that everything I express below isspeculation or my opinion andeveryone is free to interpret music in whichever way they want.
At its core I personallybelieve You Belong With Me is a songabout a queer girl (Taylor) hopelessly in love with her straight friend (possiblyAngelina from the song of the same name) the problem? Angelina is already inlove with someone else (probably her boyfriend Steven, also from the song Angelina.)
I obviously don’t wantto get sexist or stereotypical here. Believe me, as an afab non-binary lesbianwho grew up with exclusively male friends I am very well aware that girls and boys canbe friends. That being said, I do feel that the friendship described inthis song between Taylor and her love interest seem very female-coded. I’d alsoargue that the song relies heavily on heteronormative and stereotypical genderroles. Of course I’ll explain more thoroughly what I mean by that as the analysisgoes on.
Lyrics credit toAZLyrics as usual.
Now, let’s put ourqueer googles on and look at the song.
You’re on the phone with your girlfriend
She’s upset, she’s going off about something that yousaid
‘Cause she doesn’t get your humor like I do.
She’s #NoHomo:ing right out of the gate here, by puttinga pronoun to the partner of “You.” They’re on the phone with their angry girlfriend who didn’t appreciate a joke“You” has made. Taylor seems to think said joke was hilarious though and claimsthis is because she knows “You” better than their partner and thus understandsthe joke better.
Taylor’s trying to sell the song from a heteronormativeperspective by, right away in the song’s opening line giving “You” a GIRLFRIEND. This supposedly makes “You”a boy. After all, boys like girls, right? So, if we were to look at this song’scast of characters the way Taylor wants us to the cast list would look asfollows:
Steven – You
Angelina – the girlfriend of “You”
Taylor – The heterosexual girl who’s secretly in lovewith her friend who is A BOY
But what if it’s really like this:
You – Angelina
Steven – the BOYFRIEND of “You”
Taylor – The gay girl in love with her straight FEMALEfriend
I’m in the room, it’s a typical Tuesday night.
I’m listening to the kind of music she doesn’t like.
And she’ll never know your story like I do.
For the next few lines Taylor keeps #NoHomo:ing by continuouslycalling her romantic rival “she” but she’s still gender-neutrally referring totheir mutual love interest simply as “You” and keeps insisting she knows (and presumablyalways will know) her friend better than their supposed “girlfriend” does
But she wears short skirts
I wear T-shirts
She’s cheer captain
And I’m on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you’re looking for has been here the wholetime.
Thehetero explanation for these lines is that Taylor wishes she could be pretty, feminine and athletic like Steven’s girlfriend so that Steven would beinterested in her (Taylor) instead of in Angelina.
In truth though, here is where the first interestingthing from a queer perspective really happens. You see, I no longer think thatthe female pronouns refers to “Steven’s” girlfriend, it would seem there hasbeen a shift and the pronoun are now referring to a female as the true loveinterest of the song.
If we look at these lines it looks to me as if Tayloris describing this “she” as the typical straight girl, while Taylor herself is describedas the typical gay girl. Where do I get that impression?
Well, Angelinadresses femininely, (sometimes in short skirts, sometimes in high heels) shecaptain of the cheer squad, she’s a “typical princess” if you will. (A term weknow Taylor likes to use for straight girls, I’m actually a bit surprised that doesn’tcome into play here.)
Meanwhile Taylor dresses “like a boy” (sometimes int-shirts, sometimes in sneakers) something that is a common stereotype forlesbians.  She also doesn’t participate inschool activities besides watching them from the sidelines, (something that wasalso mentioned in the song Angelina, “Just watched Stephen run across the fieldWatched him catch the ball”) she’s a bit of an outsider, a bit odd (orshould I say queer?) and someone as popular (and straight) as Angelina likely wouldn’tbe interested in her (romantically) even if they are friends as the songsuggests.
I did warn you when I said I feel like the song reliesa lot on stereotypes in order to tell its story (both about LGBT+ peeps andabout how girls and boys “should act”) it is obviously not true that everylesbian dresses “like a boy” or that every straight girl only ever wears heelsand is a cheerleader.
However we must remember that Taylor is writing onlyform her own experiences here and we do know that she largely used to dress abit more “masculine” (clothes do not have gender, people!) back in the day (noton stage, but privately, check her oldvlogs for instance, if you have no idea what I’m on about right now.)
Like I said I believe this song is about a gay girlfalling for her straight friend and Taylor’s using clothes as a metaphor. Tellingus the story by using stereotypes for how people of a certain sexualorientation supposedly usually dress. It’s her way of saying “I’m gay, she’snot.”
Anyway, in the last few lines the switch occurs again and in order to #NoHomo-proof the song thelove interest’s pronoun is back from “she” to “you.” Thus supposedly referringto “Steven” again. Under the protection of heteronormativity and brilliant useof pronoun Taylor expresses how she wishes the girl of her dreams would justrealize that they belong together already!
If you could see
That I’m the one
Who understands you.
Been here all along.
So, why can’t you see
You belong with me,
You belong with me.
It’s pining time, people! Taylor puts into words thethoughts that have at some point run through the mind of every lesbian in lovewith a straight girl and especially if she’s their friend. An approximatetranslation of what Taylor is saying here: “That stupid boy will neverunderstand or be there for you like I can. Why can’t you just dump his ass forme already? Dammit Angelina, why do you HAVE to be straight when we’re so clearly meant to be together?!” (Poorlittle Tay, few things hurt as much as a straight crush!)
Walk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeans
I can’t help thinking this is how it ought to be.
Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself,
“Hey, isn’t this easy?”
We’ve already had it explained for us that Angelina isfeminine, so obviously she’d never wear anything as tomboyish as worn-outjeans, right? Nope, so it HAS to be Steven Taylor’s hanging out with in thisverse. There was a purpose in telling us what Angelina likes to wear, it was sowe wouldn’t think she was “You” because #NoHomo everyone, #NoHomo.
However I do believe Taylor’s talking of the momentsshe spends alone with Angelina, without Steven around. The moments where shecan just look at Angelina, sitting there on the park bench in the sunshine, tellingher friend Taylor something funny about her day.
As they laugh together Taylor notices just how prettyAngelina is and she’s allowed tolook, she’s allowed to laugh at Angelina’s jokes and she’s allowed to just bearound her crush and appreciate that. The moments they’re alone are easy, Taylor can almost pretend thatAngelina like-likes her back. Those moments don’t hurt like when Steven isaround and she’s is reminded that she isn’t in fact, allowed to like Angelina like that (or as she phrases it in Angelina “run across to Angelina”) becausesomeone else already does and he’s a boy.
Sorry, didn’t mean to go into fanfic-territory there, but this is exactly why I think YBWM issuch an ANTHEM for all the gays in love with their straight friend, because atleast to me, it so perfectly captures that feeling.
And you’ve got a smile
That could light up this whole town.
I haven’t seen it in a while
Since she brought you down.
You say you’re fine I know you better than that.
Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?
I think that something we can all relate to regardlessif we’re gay or straight is our friends (who we may or may not be in love with)dating horrible people, right? You’re just like “Dude, your partner is horribleand you deserve so much better!” and they’re like “Shut up, I likeeeee them andI’m fine!” and you sigh and try againin a few months, the next time their partner does something questionable. You knowthem so well you can just see yourfriend’s happiness being sucked out of them and yet they insist on dating someonewho’s causing this. “What are theydoing with a person like that?”
Well, that’s pretty much what’s happening in thisverse between Taylor and Angelina, of course Steven is the “she” here and theverse should be:
I haven’t seen it in a while
Since HE brought you down.
You say you’re fine I know youbetter than that.
Hey, what you doing with a BOYlike that?
But #NoHomo and all that.
Standing by and waiting at your backdoor.
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me,
You belong with me.
Angelina and Taylor have been friends quite a whileand hang out so frequently that Taylor has even started using the back door forvisits instead of the front door. She’s in other words pretty familiar withAngelina’s house on account of hanging out there so much and the girl still doesn’t freaking realize theyshould be dating? What the heck is wrong with her? Oh, riiight, she’s straight
…Is basically what these lines are telling us.
Oh, I remember you driving to my house
In the middle of the night.
I’m the one who makes you laugh
When you know you’re 'bout to cry.
I know your favorite songs,
And you tell me about your dreams.
Think I know where you belong,
Think I know it’s with me.
Remember when I told you the friendship described inthe song seemed female-coded? Yeah, here’s what’s up with that…So. you’retelling me, Taylor-No-Homo-Swift, that the dad who in Picture To Burn was supposedly gonna show a boy who scorned youJUST how sorry he should be for hurting his little girl, or that in Love Story yelled at Romeo to stay awayfrom you is gonna be letting A BOY into his house in the middle of the night tohang out with his daughter? Nah, a girl though, sure! (At least if we assumeTaylor wasn’t out to her parents in her early high school days when I think wecan safely assume the crush on Angelina was happening.)
You know what’s a huge stereotype about femalefriendship? That they tell each other EVERYTHING, all of it, from trivial stufflike favorite songs to deep and personal stuff, like their hopes and dreams.  All the things they don’t tell theirboyfriends, just like they don’t tell their boyfriends everything they alsooccasionally are upset with him and when they are they have someone else theyrun to for comfort…That’s right, their best female friend who somehow manages to make her laugh in the middle of all the hurt and upset feelings they’reranting to her about at 2AM.
Because Taylor knows all of this about Angelina and isalways there for her when Steven somehow screws up and hurts her Taylor knows that the two of them are theperfect match and belong together, but when she’s done crying Angelina will dryher tears, give Taylor a hug and run back to Steven. Taylor is left alone, wondering one thing.
You belong with me.
Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me?
You belong with me.
What is Taylor wondering? The same thing every gay haswondered about the straight they love.
Has Angelina ever thought, has it ever even for a singlesecond crossed her mind that perhaps she should be with Taylor, the one wholoves and supports her instead of with Steven?
As always, thank you so much to everyone for reading and feel free to send me Taylor songs to analyze or just asks in general!
Tomorrow’s analysis will be New Romantics 😊

Hamilton,’ ‘Lion King’ and ‘Wicked’ Set Broadway Returns
The trio of hit musicals top a growing list of productions to announce fall reopenings amid the pandemic.
Tumblr media
fellow Tony Award-winning musicals The Lion King and Wicked announced they will return to their respective stages, at the Minskoff Theatre and at the Gershwin Theatre, on the same day. Tickets for all three shows are now on sale at ticketmaster.com.
“This rare alliance between three of Broadway’s fan-favorites sends a message that Broadway is united in its commitment to ending a devastating period of hardship for the tens of thousands who make their living directly on Broadway shows and the tens of thousands in dependent industries,” reads the joint press release. Cast members from each production — Alexandra Billings from Wicked, Krystal Joy Brown from Hamilton and L. Steven Taylor from The Lion King — appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday to announce the news.
Hamilton, The Lion King, and Wicked have consistently been the best-attended shows since they opened; Hamilton six years ago, Wicked 17 years ago and The Lion King 23 years ago. Combined, the three musicals have played to 176 million audience members in dozens of countries. On Broadway, the three productions combined have employed nearly 1,000 performers during their runs, per theater owners the Nederlander Organization.
The trio of long-running hits top a running list of on- and off-Broadway shows to have announced reopening dates following last week’s joint announcement from New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Broadway League that theater will turn the lights back on in the fall. Hard-hit from the coronavirus pandemic, Broadway has been shut down since March 12, 2020. At that time, 31 productions were running, including eight shows in previews and another eight in rehearsals.
“Broadway is a major part of our state’s identity and economy, and we are thrilled that the curtains will rise again,” Cuomo said when announcing that the NYC theaters will open at 100 percent capacity starting Sept. 14. The Broadway League followed the news by directing theatergoers to Broadway.org to track developing information on ticket sales, as productions will be announcing their return dates in coming weeks on a show-by-show basis.
Nothing beats Broadway,” said Broadway League president Charlotte St. Martin last week of restarting an industry that has been dormant for over a year. “The theater owners, producers, and other League members will continue to work with the N.Y. State Department of Health and the governor to coordinate the industry’s return and the related health and safety protocols required to do so. We remain cautiously optimistic about Broadway’s ability to resume performances this fall and are happy that fans can start buying tickets again.”
Broadway shows with return or opening dates set and tickets available, as of Tuesday, include The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago, Come From Away, Tina — The Tina Turner Musical, Ain’t Too Proud — The Life and Times of the Temptations, Aladdin, Jagged Little Pill, Mrs. Doubtfire, Company, Six and Diana: A True Musical Story.

August 18, 2020
Tuesday we woke up around 8. We had packed up most of our things the night before, so we didn’t have much to do that morning. I made us coffee and Natalie made us half sandwiches of peanut butter and jam. I did my makeup and we loaded up the car. Natalie got a bag of ice for our cooler, and then we hit the road! We were planning on driving all the way home to Bellingham that day, so it was going to be a long one.
I drove two hours to Bend. I had never been to Bend! Natalie has been before and loved the river for floating on an inter tube, and all the breweries. Catherine (my best friend from Western) was in Bend the weekend before, and suggested a place for us to stop for lunch. She suggested Bend Brewing Company. We had some good food there! I had a chicken wrap with tater tots and Natalie had a salmon salad. We shared a flight of six beers, which was really fun! I love having flights of beer. We enjoyed lunch and found a little gift shop for a postcard or two, then hit the road again.
We stopped for gas again, then headed to the Painted Hills, another suggestion of Catherine’s. We stopped for cheap coffee at McDonald’s because it was going to be a long day! The Painted Hills are part of the John Day Fossil Beds, a National Monument. Natalie slept for about 45 minutes while I drove, then woke up and we jammed to Taylor Swift (like we had been the whole road trip!). We arrived at the Painted Hills around 3. We chose a small trail for .5 miles to walk and get a view of the hills.
IT WAS HOT. It was 100 degrees when we got back in the car! The Painted Hills were really pretty! They had layers of orange and red in the hills, as a result of fossils and different types of rocks. Thankfully it was a little windy and we only did the smallest trail. It was really cool to see! We took some pictures and headed back to the car.
From the car, I realized that we didn’t have service, so I didn’t know how to get home, via Yakima. Thankfully, enough of my Google Maps on my phone had loaded, so we took our best guess, and headed north.
Thankfully, after a bit, we got some cell phone service! We were going the right way, woo! We pulled over and both peed on the side of the road (hahah, our second time that day), and Natalie took over driving. We had had two stops, but it really felt like I had been driving all day! We spent the time chatting and listening to music. Natalie put together a throwback playlist for us, and of course we listened to Taylor Swift.
Finally, we made it into Washington! We had a snack of turkey slices with cheese to hold us over until dinner. We made it to Yakima around 8pm. Natalie wanted to go to a drive in burger place that she liked, called Miner’s, but the line was super long and we didn’t want to wait a long time. We ended up getting McDonald’s. We grabbed dinner and then got gas for the last time. Natalie kept driving for a bit, while we ate our dinner. She didn’t feel great after eating her burger—I’ve learned that she has a very sensitive stomach, but handles it so well! We drove west and started the final trek home. After a while, Natalie couldn’t drive anymore. She has really bad night blindness! It was crazy for me to learn what that was like!
I took over driving and went over Snoqualmie Pass, through Ellensburg. There was so much construction going on! It was kind of scary. I’m also really not used to that pass, as we always used to go over Steven’s Pass, when I was going up. Thankfully we made it! We popped off I-90 at Bellvue and headed north. We made one last bathroom break in Smokey Point, then cruised home. I dropped off Natalie at her place and helped her get her stuff out of my car, then drive home. Ingvar was waiting up for me, which was really nice. We had left our cottage more than 15 hours before! But, we did do a lot of stopping on the way home. It was a long day and I was sure happy to be home! It was the perfect trip for a mix of road tripping and relaxing. I would love to travel with Natalie again! :]

Rocket goal-scoring leader Charles Hudon has 4-3-7 in Laval’s last four games and is tied for fourth in the AHL in goals, with 24-7-31 in 39 GP. Nick Jonas will replace Gwen Stefani as coach on ‘The Voice’ in spring
CLOSE
Tumblr media
“The Voice” is adding Nick Jonas to its celebrity coaching roster. Jonas is set to join the singing competition in spring 2020. USA TODAY
“The Voice” is expanding its celebrity coaching roster with the addition of Nick Jonas, one-third of the multiplatinum Jonas Brothers band.
Jonas, 27, will join returning coaches and fellow music stars Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton for next spring’s edition of NBC’s popular singing competition. Host Carson Daly also returns.
The current season of “The Voice” (Monday and Tuesday, 8 EDT/PDT), which features coaches Clarkson, Legend, Shelton and Gwen Stefani, is in the blind-auditions phase.
Jonas, who is married to actress Priyanka Chopra, announced his new gig during Monday’s taping of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which will air Tuesday.

He appeared on “Ellen” with his brothers, Joe and Kevin, to promote the latest Jonas Brothers album collaboration, “Happiness Begins,” and its current single, “Only Human.” His future coaching collaborators welcomed him via video, with Nick Jonas responding to Shelton’s trash talk with a little of his own.
“I’m so excited to be a part of ‘The Voice’ family,” Jonas said in a statement included in NBC’s Monday announcement. “It’s such an awesome group of individuals, and I can’t wait to help these artists really build and hone in to find their unique voices.”
NBC Entertainment alternative programming chief Meredith Ahr said Jonas stood out during his time on “Songland,” a songwriting competition broadcast on NBC during the summer.

Transiting Sun enters Pisces
February 18 - March 20, 2017
“The best way to view the transits of the Sun is to think of them as a big, celestial searchlight. It plays a hyperintense beam of self-awareness over us, cutting through the overlapping webs of planetary trigger points spread throughout the chart. Whatever part of the mind it hits is temporarily centralized in the ego, occupying our attention and centralizing its needs. With solar transits, ego plays its hand, for better or worse.” -- The Changing Sky, Steven Forrest
Through the filter of Pisces, the solar searchlight is a little hazy and out of focus. With little effort, our imaginations run wild, creating this or that scenario which may or may not have anything to do with reality.
I really like this representation of the constellation Pisces:
Tumblr media
You can see easily that the two fish, though tied together by their tails, are headed in different directions - not opposites. One fish remains more or less aligned on the “path” made by the Zodiac, while the other is trying to leap free of the whole thing. That’s our first clue about any Pisces transit: there are things you can see easily, on the surface; and there are things you’ll discover only when you look beyond that surface.
Pisceans are notorious for their tendency to drift through life; a better way to channel that wafting energy is to put a little more conscious awareness into going with the flow. We’re very sensitive to all the different currents and undercurrents - and sometimes that’s too much to cope with, too overwhelming. Another less happy Piscean trait is escapism, be it via pharmaceuticals, the idiot box, or your poison of choice.
With practice and with faith, though, we can eventually become experts at navigation. We can anticipate not only problems, but possibilities. It isn’t yet time to act on these problems and possibilities - that’s Aries’ department - so use this month to prepare for that burst of energy next March.
Celebrities with Sun in Pisces Albert Einstein, Rihanna, Alan Rickman, Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Taylor, Adam Levine, George Harrison, Brian Jones, Drew Barrymore, Edgar Cayce, Daniel Craig, Nicolaus Copernicus, Oscar Isaac, Frederic Chopin, Johnny Cash, Kesha, Michelangelo, George Washington, Emily Blunt, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Isabelle Huppert, Erykah Badu, Nina Simone, Queen Latifah, Galileo Gallilei, Bobby Fischer
NB: for the time period February 20-25, the Sun/Pisces will be annoying the Cardinal Grand Cross. Please see this blog post for more information.
Tuesday, February 21, North Node/Virgo opposite Sun/Pisces, South Node/Pisces conjunct Sun/Pisces, 3:28
If the North Node symbolizes our path for growth, then the Sun conjunct the South Node is literally the furthest away from the path that is possible. As it’s the first major aspect the Sun makes, it sets the tone for the entire Sun-through-Pisces. Rather than giving up just as we’re getting started, we need to keep our ultimate North Node goals in mind (becoming more effective and sustainable) and commit to working toward them.
Planets/Points affected lie between 2:28 and 4:28 of the signs Taurus, Gemini*, Cancer, Virgo*, Scorpio, Sagittarius*, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Wednesday, February 23, Ceres/Taurus sextile Sun/Pisces, 5:50 Thursday, February 24, Juno/Capricorn sextile Sun/Pisces, 6:19
Quite down-to-earth, practical, and indeed a natural reaction to the previous aspect. We find it very easy to establish basic domestic routines which are healthy and emotionally supportive. Keeping life as simple and realistic as we can manage will have a tremendously stabilizing influence - sorely needed.
Planets/Points affected lie between 4:50 and 7:19 of the yin signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Wednesday, March 1, Neptune/Pisces conjunct Sun/Pisces, 11:42
This can be confusing, delusionary, inspirational, otherworldly, impressionable, and psychic - all at once. It will be almost impossible to avoid, or evade, the overall Pisces vibe of the day; if you have anything important within range, and especially in the mutable signs, you may not like this. Or be particularly susceptible to it. Or both. Basically, it’s a great day to be a space cadet!
Planets/Points affected lie between 10:42 and 12:42 of the signs Taurus, Gemini*, Cancer, Virgo*, Scorpio, Sagittarius*, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Monday, March 6, Mercury/Pisces conjunct Sun/Pisces, 16:37
This is the “superior conjunction” of the Sun and Mercury. The little planet is at its top apparent speed, and is on the other side of the Sun from the Earth - in other words, it’s a “Full Mercury” time. We struggle to keep our minds as objective as possible, while reflecting (“Full Mercury”) on what has happened to us. In Pisces this could be difficult because of the innate Piscean being diffusive, nebulous, and vacillating. It may be time to let the right brain take over the mental processing, today.
Planets/Points affected lie between 15:37 and 17:37 of the signs Taurus, Gemini*, Cancer, Virgo*, Scorpio, Sagittarius*, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Thursday, March 9, Pluto/Capricorn sextile Sun/Pisces, 18:57
Pluto loves to plot, and Capricorn gives it an appreciation of structure and of the long-term. This sextile will bring opportunities to reach your “effective sustainability” goals, or whatever goals you have in mind. There’s real staying power. What the Sun in Pisces brings is a certain flexibility and fluidity - if/when we encounter roadblocks, we’re able to sail right around/through them.
Planets/Points affected lie between 17:57 and 19:56 of the yin signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Friday, March 10, Vesta/Cancer trine Sun/Pisces, 20:09
This can be a very beautiful aspect of self-integration and self-identification. In water signs, however - well, remember that water has no shape of its own, but rather takes the shape of its container. We may be coming up with an “identity” that allows us to function in the world, with our real selves camouflaged, or sunk into deeper waters. We may be more concerned with “tribal” identity (Cancer) as a way to cope with the larger world (Pisces).
Planets/Points affected lie between 19:09 and 21:09 of the yin signs Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces.
Tuesday, March 14, Pallas/Pisces conjunct Sun/Pisces, 24:41; Chiron/Pisces conjunct Sun/Pisces, 24:42
This is an impressive triple conjunction. The two mentioned above are exact within 11 minutes of each other, and the third one (Pallas conjunct Chiron) occurs less than half an hour later. In “The Mountain Astrologer,” Leah Whitehorse comments that this “spotlights (Sun) bridge-building (Chiron) and negotiation (Pallas) to transcend our differences and help us adapt to change. Healing becomes a creative process of self-illumination.” I would like to substitute “immanence” for “transcendence,” as you well know - it isn’t just healing (Chiron), but a genius idea (Pallas), to find everything we have in common with one another.
Planets/Points affected lie between 23:41and 25:42 of the signs Taurus, Gemini*, Cancer, Virgo*, Scorpio, Sagittarius*, Capricorn, and Pisces; and between 8:41 and 10:42 of the fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.
Friday, March 17, Saturn/Sagittarius square Sun/Pisces, 27:29
Here is the day that the idealistic plans you’ve made are challenged by “reality.” It’s a test of faith, primarily, but also of our flexibility and our compassion. Can we live up to our own hype? How do we work with/around “unreasonable” authority? There’s a chance that we meet the enemy at last, and he is us - how do we respond to that realization? It’s impractical to ignore reality, but it’s stupid to let reality excuse us from showing imagination and mercy.
Planets/Points affected lie between 26:29 and 28:29 of the mutable signs Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces; and between 11:29 and 13:29 of the fixed signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius.

Below is the day-by-day calendar of “theater openings”* in August, 2020, a month of abundance: Two theatrical celebrations of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage (Aug 16 & 18), two ways to re-experience Amiri Baraka’s landmark play “The Dutchman” (Aug 8 & 20), at least two annual summer theater festivals re-imagined, and three “reunion readings” of plays with their original starry casts.
And that’s just what we know about as the month begins. Since physical theaters were shut down in March, many  shows are put together at the last minute, sometimes not even announced until the very day of their launch. (And there have also been last-minute cancellations.) That’s why  I will be updating this preview guide every day, and highlighting the offerings each new day with a new link up top. This calendar as of this moment offers a glimpse of what’s in store. Come back day by day for a better look. (Some of the plays listed do require advance reservation.)
Several ongoing series have been consistent in quality and output, many of them new or even ad-hoc.
Four offer live performances (usually referred to as readings), often of original plays:
The Homebound Project (See Aug 5) Livelabs: One Acts from MCC Play-PerView (See Aug 1, 8 and 15th) Viral Monologues from 24 Hour Plays (some 10 short new monologues almost every Tuesday) This month, the similar 48Hours in…Harlem celebrates its 10th anniversary, by going online. (See August 20.)
There is also Stars in the House, a twice-daily variety and talk show that, twice a week — on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons — presents Plays in the House,  Zoom readings of well-known plays, often classics…and a Sunday matinee for teenagers.
*My definition of theater for the purposes of this calendar generally does not extend to variety shows, cast reunions, galas, panel discussions, documentaries, classes, interviews — of which there are plenty, many worth checking out. My focus here is on creative storytelling in performance. (I make an occasional exception for a high-profile Netathon, involving many theater artists, such as Broadway Bares on Aug 1.)
A reminder that this calendar lists when the shows “open.” Some are live and available only for that one performance. Other shows are available for four days, or a week, or longer.
August 1
playwright Lydia Diamond
Crystal Monee Hall
Jelani Aladdin
Stick Fly Plays in the House 2 p.m. Available until August 5 The Zoom reading of Lydia Diamond’s play (which ran on Broadway in 2011)  is the latest matinee  in the twice-weekly spinoff series of Stars in the House. The affluent, African-American LeVay family is gathering at their Martha’s Vineyard home for the weekend, and brothers Kent and Flip have each brought their respective ladies home to meet the parents for the first time. The cast features Jelani Alladin, Crystal Monee Hall, Caroline Innerbichler, Keith Randolph Smith, Tiffany Rachelle Stewart, Daniel J. Watts and Renika Williams. New original music by Crystal Monee Hall
RoosevElvis Play-PerView Launches at 5 p.m. $5-$50 A reunion reading of The TEAM’s 2013 comedy, directed by Rachel Chavkin (Hadestown, Great Comet): On a hallucinatory road trip from the Badlands to Graceland, the spirits of Elvis Presley and Theodore Roosevelt battle over the soul of Ann, a painfully shy meat-processing plant worker, and what kind of man or woman Ann should become.
Verdi’s Ernani Metropolitan Opera 7:30 p.m. available for 23 hours A complicated story based on a Victor Hugo play about a young woman and the three men vying for her affection
Murder in Montgomery Manor Broadway Whodunit $21.30 8 p.m. The first in a series of virtual unscripted murder mysteries created by Andrew Barth Feldman (Dear Evan Hansen), where we play detective after one Broadway star is murdered to figure out which Broadway star was the killer. The eight-member cast this time features Feldman as host Laurence Montgomery VI, Alex Boniello as Giuseppe Romano, The Lawyer (I’ll bet he winds up the killer), Will Roland and Shereen Pimentel.
Broadway Bares 9:30 p.m. The annual strip show for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS has gone online this year, featuring (clothed) appearances by Nick Adams, Charles Busch, Lea DeLaria, J. Harrison Ghee, Jane Krakowski, Nathan Lane, Beth Leavel, Judith Light, Andrew Lippa, Lesli Margherita, Angie Schworer, Marc Shaiman, Miriam Shor, Christopher Sieber, Wesley Taylor

The 2020 Virtual Woody Guthrie Festival came to a close this past Sunday, putting a wrap on a bold journey into unknown territory for the Woody Guthrie Coalition and the annual fest. Following an impressive all-star line-up of songwriters on Tuesday and Saturday’s broadcasts, the invaluable Terry “Buffalo” Ware got the Sunday show underway with his rollicking “Plain As Day” and some extra fun picking. Next up, Melissa Hembree joined by her pals, Michael Hurd on mandolin and Bruce Metcalf on acoustic bass, performed a great poignant new song, “Okfuskee” down in front of the Woody statue in downtown Okemah. It doesn’t get more fitting than that. Or does it?
Andy Adams made his case, by delivering a stunning version of Jimmy LaFave’s “Music From the Motorcourt,” that does a fine job of capturing the after-hours hotel parking lot scene that really inspires so many. I really enjoyed Adams’ albeit brief performance at the Old Church here in Perkins, OK just a few months back, and have tuned into several of his own livestreams since. Keeping with the LaFave theme, Adams closed out his segment with another of the beloved songwriter and mentor, the aptly titled, “Woody Guthrie.” Up next, the multi-talented, Ali Harter with an older song she indicated she had recently dug out, “Anti-Political, Unpolitical Song.” Not only a gifted songwriter, Harter also designed this year’s logo and merch via her Pigs Fly Shop, and all her endeavors certainly deserve your attention. OKCs K.C. Clifford performed next, straight from her home’s staircase with a really great song that I believe to be titled, “Remember When.” I haven’t taken the opportunity to catch Clifford live yet, but now I certainly know I need to. You probably need to as well. Tell her I sent you. Robert Williams came next, with a nice sing-a-long on Woody’s “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know Yuh” and was followed by the wonderful, Susan Herndon performing her take of the traditional, “This Train is Bound For Glory.” Need a pick-me-up? Williams and Herdon’s songs should do the trick. Following up on their duo performance on the opening night, Travis Fite and Monica Taylor returned with Fite on vocals for Woody’s “Dust Pneumonia Blues,” which has always been a personal favorite of mine from the vast Guthrie catalog. Great, fun version.
Also returning from Saturday’s show, was another song from Betty Soo. This time, a stunning rendition of her own “Henry & Me,” which just stopped me in my tracks and was one of my favorite songs of the festival. I’ll definitely be digging more into this gifted songwriter’s songs soon. With a perfect Terilingua backdrop, good ol’ Butch Hancock was back with well wishes, a bit of hope and a Flatlander’s cut, “One Road More.” Next, Nellie Clay served as our Okenah tour guide in a great production type clip accompanying a soundtrack of Clay performing Woody’s “Ranger’s Command.” Nellie’s choice of song while visiting the Crystal Theatre, the Pastures of Plenty stage and Guthrie’s homestead for the clip, was just exactly perfect. Jared Deck followed, with his soulful “Mountain Valley Road” that had me wishing for at least one more. Instead, Jaimee Harris was back with “On The Surface,” and a short tale detailing the travels that took her from Terilingua, to Okemah to Taos and Eliza Gilkyson’s home. Harris’ stripped down performances were a highlight throughout the festival, and this version was no different. Definitely take the time to listen. Joel Rafael also returned again, this time with a nice version of “Glory Bound,” followed by the sounds of the Red Dirt Rangers and “Strawberries and Watermelon.” Bristow, Oklahoma’s Cassie Latshaw next performed, what I think is titled, “Hide Away” with her friends Steven and Paul and gave me yet another Okie songwriter I really need to catch soon. Annie Guthrie was back with a new song, one she indicated was still being worked out, and well, she doesn’t really care if you have an opinion about it. Keep it to yourself friend. Right there, the spirit of the Guthrie family was perfectly represented, and despite her likely disregard for this writer’s opinion, it’s a damn fine song.
Gypsy Twang comprised of Sarah Barker Huhn, and Steve Huhn, as well as John Williams and Craig Skinner, added a beautiful version of Woody’s “Ramblin’ Round.” Next, Larry Spears’ “Puppeteer” and it’s Dylan-esque cadence, proceeded to blow me away. Just a great song, look it up. Leading us into the closing stretch, Ken Pomeroy presented her inspired tale of Dylan and Baez, titled, “Joan.” It’s been so much fun watching Pomeroy develop as a songwriter, and even when she covers a song, as she did next with “Deportees,” she unmistakably leaves her fingerprints all of it. I can’t recommend her Horton Records debut release, “Hallways” enough, so be sure to look it up. Jacob Tovar returned from his barn for Tom Skinner’s “Crystal,” while R.T. Valine, with birds accompanying delivered a timely take on “Wish This World (Would Settle Down), while his good boy, Wino, kept watch. In the Oklahoma music scene, I doubt there;s a more valuable asset than Kyle Reid. Besides fronting his own endeavors, Reid has played a part in countless local shows and recordings. Reid’s tent set last year with his Low Swinging Chariots was a highlight, and I always look forward to any opportunity to hear his contributions, which thankfully happens quite frequently here in the OKC area. For this year’s fest, Reid recorded a great original, “Dance Alone” and followed it up with Woody’s Hobo’s Lullaby.”
Throughout the pandemic, Carter Sampson has been right there, doing her part to help keep us sane, and maybe herself too. I’ve probably tuned into more Carter livestreams this year than anyone elses, and there’s a couple of reasons. First, she’s performed nearly 60 of her “Happy Hour w/Carter & Bubba,”, and second, each one has been outstanding. Along with her faithful, canine rescue, Bubba, Sampson provides great songs, stories, Shel Silverstein and well, hope. Hope that all this will someday end. Here, Sampson and Bubba perform a great version of “Queen of Oklahoma” and her more recent, “Rattlesnake Kate” from “Lucky” on Horton Records. Next, Peggy Johnson performed a pair of songs that always hit me hard, “One of the Ones” and “Dustbowl Lullaby.” I just discovered Johnson at last year’s fest, and I’m so glad I did. Closing in on the end, Michigan’s Chris Buhalis dropped in again with another brilliant song for the “Working People,” and introduced himself as a new favorite that I must become more familiar with. Any songwriter that can include a line about Bob Gibson’s fastball high and tight, is on to something. The great Greg Jacobs came up next from Greg Johnson’s Blue Door in Oklahoma City for a loving take on “Do Re Mi,” and a poignant version of his own, “Footprints” before our host Terry Ware wrapped up this years recorded performances for the year with the traditionally played Hoot for Huntington’s, sing-along take of Bob Childer’s “Woody’s Road.”
Like everything else in this crazy world right now, this year’s festival was different, and not quite what any of us wanted. Thankfully though, it did happen. I know I needed it, our community needed it and undoubtedly the performers needed it. Any sense of normalcy has to be grasped, and thank goodness the Woody Guthrie Coalition came through for us, because it really helped. Throughout the broadcasts, performer after performer mentioned how much they missed, and how much they look forward to actually sweating it out at the festival next year. Count me in. Next year’s Woody Guthrie Festival will hopefully return with live performances from Okemah on July 14th -18th. A huge thank you to all the 2020 festival artists, supporters, contributors, Friends of the Festival and Coalition members. The fact that together, all of these people were able to convey the sense of family and spirit over a livestream process, is nothing short of amazing. It really shows the depth of dedication and the love of the music that each one of these beautiful people possesses. I really missed seeing everyone this year, and eagerly look forward to the next time we can all get together. As always, an extra loud thank you to all the members of the Festival Board of Directors: President Randy Norman, Vice-President Gary Hart, Dana Gunn, Miranda Huff, Fred Ellert, Cheyenne Felker, Lindsey Flowers, Maddie Gregory, Roger Hostenbach, Roger Osburn, Dennis Whiteman and Guy Zahller, and lastly, of course, the Guthrie Family. Special people, each and every one.
The 2020 WoodyFest stream can still  be viewed until the end of the month on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=woodyfest+2020 and the Coalition would definitely appreciate any support via donations and 2020 fest merchandise. All the information can be found here: https://www.woodyfest.com.
