A Pride Month Roundtable Chat

Happy Pride Month, everyone! It’s our favorite month of the year and we decided to get personal about what Pride Month means to us and how we celebrate it. The people who joined our discussion are: YF Ollwell, Rascal Hartley, Sebastian Marie, boneturtle, Alessa Riel, Tris Lawrence, EC, Owl Outerbridge, Nina Waters, and two anonymous contributors.

1. What does Pride Month mean to you?

Anonymous 1: Pride and pride month was first and foremost a riot, it’s transgressive and will continue to be transgressive until the need for it to not be anymore is served. It’s about protest and being comfortable as queer people in our own community and selves, and yes we need allies more than ever, but it’s not about them in this case. It’s about us and our community and history and being safe in our identities. Don’t deliberately alienate people or allies, but it’s on them to respect the context, but still making a point does not equate being obnoxious on purpose.

Sebastian Marie: It means that this is a time to go “I exist, and you can’t change that” to people who don’t care. There’s a lot of people who say things like “I’m supportive just don’t shove it down my throat” and to that I say, “deepthroat the rainbow, fuckers, this is my time”

Anonymous 2: I’ve always liked the idea of pride, but I can’t stand crowds and loud noises, and I don’t drink. It’s one of those things where I’m glad it exists but I don’t want to be there, if that makes sense? The merch tables are good, though. I love any excuse to buy colorful handmade merch.

Owl Outerbridge: [What Anonymous 2 says] is why I love my city’s small Pride during the first week of Pride month. It’s a big gay craft fair, lol.

Anonymous 2: Big gay craft fairs are awesome. Crafty set-ups encourage people to talk to each other, too. Learn new skills and get in contact with artists.

Rascal Hartley: If we’re just talking about the concept of Pride, and not the actual event Pride, then to me it means a space to be loud and be accepted, but especially the loud part. There is no normalization without being loud about it first, so the concept of Pride, to me, means being loud as a group.

Anonymous 2: Without a doubt. Being loud and proud and not going away is important, and I think it might be even more important now that people are getting tired and there’s a slow chipping away at the authenticity of activism.

boneturtle: This reminds me of Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette where she talks about being a “quiet gay” Another reason I struggled to identify as gay was the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. I watched it on … my TV in my little living room in my small town. That was my first introduction to my people. The Mardi Gras… I used to watch it, going, “There they are, my people. They’re busy, aren’t they? Gosh. Don’t they love to dance and party?” I used to sit there and watch it and go, “Where… where do the quiet gays… go? Where are the quiet gays supposed to go?” I still do. I’m just like… the pressure on my people to express our identity and pride through the metaphor of party is very intense. Don’t get me wrong, I love the spectacle, I really do, but I’ve never felt compelled to get amongst it. Do you know? I’m a quiet soul. … “I need to express my identity through the metaphor of a nap. I don’t… I don’t think I’m very good at gay.”

Alessa Riel: Gosh, Nanette was so powerful. Such an eye opener. It made me laugh and cry at the same time

Tris Lawrence: I love the idea of Pride, but I have never been to a Pride event. Helping at the last A Big Gay Market was the first queer big event I’ve done. Like others have said, Pride is about being out and loud and joyful and being with other queer people. But for me, being so very invisibly queer (and straight-passing because married to a dude), I’ve always felt a little off to the side. It’s getting easier to think ‘hey I could belong,’ and I’m hoping I might get to go to my first Pride event this year. It’s complicated by other things also going on the same weekend. And crowds, and social anxiety, and the idea of going by myself.

YF Ollwell: I generally consider myself a very open person, and being queer is very important to my sense of self, but Pride Month feels like a time of the year that I can share in that openness with the community at large. It’s about coming together and being ourselves in opposition of forces that would rather see us hidden away somewhere—which is why it’s felt particularly high stakes the last couple of years, and why I’ve gotten more invested in it than I was when I was younger.

Anonymous 2: I can’t even listen to live music if there’s an amp, so in-person events are my natural enemy. Sometimes you just have to accept that something can be good and also not for you.

2. How did you first learn about about Pride?

Anonymous 1: I lived in San Francisco a hop-skip from the Castro district and had a childhood hyper-fixation with historical bisexuals (Byron, Alexander Hamilton, Georgiana of Devonshire, Krishna, Olive Custance, Alfred “Bosie” Douglas, and David Bowie), and known historical queer (cause idk what he’d ID as, it’s complicated) Oscar Wilde, I was bound to stumble on it eventually. Also just wanna add, and it took me awhile to understand this cause neurodivergent etc., but part of the queer community being a bit transgressive means not discoursing each other in a way that is inherently harmful. I for one don’t understand bi vs pan, I’m bi, just bi, and not pan at all, but Janelle Monae for example uses both words as descriptors for themselves as well “she/they” and “free-ass black person” and this extends to ace and aro people and I’m Demi/grey ace but bi and genderqueer first and foremost. It’s no one’s business questioning another persons (or canonically x ID’s characters) label, you can ask respectfully how they contextualize themselves and why but if it’s malicious, drop it and stop. Even talking to older bisexuals in the bi support group I go to once a month, even they understand their bi-ness a little differently than I do, and that’s a good thing cause human diversity and diversity in perspectives is how you get well-rounded world views and people.

Sebastian Marie: When gay marriage was legalized in the US in 2015 I remember watching the news and seeing a lot of marches to celebrate, and that was the first time I’d ever seen Pride marches before. This was before I knew I was queer, but it was one of the first times I conceptualized the idea of being queer as something that had a community behind it instead of being an isolating thing.

YF Ollwell: I grew up near San Francisco with (thankfully) very accepting parents, so I knew about Pride from a very early age; I remember being maybe seven and seeing rainbow flags and decorations being sold in a local party store. I went to SF Pride for the first time when I was sixteen with my high school girlfriend.

Nina Waters: I feel like it says a lot about my own background and age that I knew about AIDs and AIDs Walk long before I knew about Pride. I grew up in New York City, and my mother and I did AIDs Walk annually starting when I was seven years old. In retrospect, it was a lot like a Pride event, because a lot of people there were always out and proud, there were drag queens, there were performances, there was camp, so I always liked to go. I’m not actually sure when I came to understand Pride as a separate event, but I went to my first Pride after I returned to NYC after graduate school. I thought I was cishet at the time, and I just liked parades and wanted to see the drag outfits. Seeing people being so out and comfortable, wherever I was when they were like that, has always been a source of joy to me. It’s such a visceral, visible reminder of “we’re here, we’re queer, get used to it, because we won’t let the world erase us.” I wanted to be there as an ally when I was young, and now I want to be there with my wife and kids to show how many flavors of Pride there are.

3. How do you plan to celebrate Pride this year? Do you have any Pride Month rituals?

EC: “Pride Month” in the US Southeast is often a little weird [because] many local Pride celebrations are held in September or October instead of June. This is ostensibly because of the weather (I mean, it’s valid. June temps are routinely in the high 80s, and 95-100+ isn’t unheard of), but also because colleges are back in session. So we get a month of unofficial Pride in June—rainbow merch in stores, events at local queer bars and other queer and queer-friendly local businesses—but parades and other “official” events happen in the fall, somewhat piecemeal.

Anonymous 1: I am still making plans, so to be decided. But as an observation—and I do this year round anyway—buying bi and queer art and jewelry from queer artists and independent artists. Definitely some events, there’s a monthly virtual bi group I go to once a month associated with the Boston bi women’s association.

Sebastian Marie: Planning to go to several Pride events with my boyfriend including a party. My rituals include painting my nails the bisexual flag colors and doing a short prayer to Nuestra Señora de Santa Muerte, a Mexican saint whose patronage includes queer people.

boneturtle: I did have a whole thing I wrote but then deleted it because I thought it might come across as too pessimistic. But then our city’s Pride parade was canceled because it rained the night before (no flooding, just… a bit of rain) and the committee wasn’t able to get approval to reschedule it, so I think that sums the situation up pretty well.

Rascal Hartley: I’m in a similar boat, I think. I’ve had to sit out this year and really think about accessibility and if I’d even be able to go to Pride and the answer is… kind of turning out to be no, in my area. There’s just too much risk and not enough benches for me.

Owl Outerbridge: I go to Pride, and this year we’re actually marching with the community college, but I feel like my activism and my statement is existing as an openly queer teacher in the classroom. It’s exhausting to know some parents don’t want me near their children and anticipating the moment it becomes an issue, so, like, it has to be enough. I’m not huge on crowds, or noise, or standing out, lol.

YF Ollwell: Even though I’m living in a big city again, I’m not planning to go out and do anything exciting! A friend of mine is living with me most of the month, so we’ve been celebrating in our own way by going out and supporting each other as fellow queer people. Beyond that, I’m hoping to go to smaller queer/trans events around my city and meet lots of new people. My brother’s birthday is at the end of the month, so I’ll wrap it all up by celebrating with him!

Nina Waters: As the owner of Duck Prints Press, I vended at our local Pride on June 1st, and it was a wonderful time! My dad even came, he’s 83 and it was his first Pride. Considering that when I first came out, he wasn’t supportive, it felt really nice to have him there and comfortable. My wife’s office also had a group marching in Albany Pride, so she and I and our kids did that and handed out candy and stuff. I like crowds and we always see people we know at events like this, so it’s a chance to catch up with friends we don’t see often. I’ve been to Pride most years since, like…2008 or 2009…and I don’t expect that to change.

4. Rec us one (1) deliciously queer book to read this month

Anonymous 1: “Bi any other name by Loraine Hutchins and Lani Ka’ahumanu.”

Sebastian Marie: Gotta reccomend The Girl and the Goddess by Nikita Gill, which is a gorgeous semi-biographical exploration of the authors bisexuality and how it interests with her faith and culture.

Rascal Hartley: I’d love to recommend Body, Remember by Kenny Fries. It’s not very well known, but if you’re a disabled queer person, I think it’s a must-read.

YF Ollwell: I read Crash by J.G. Ballard for the first time earlier this year and it was a life-changing experience: fascinating, transgressive, and the exact kind of bizarre queer fiction style I hope to capture in my own writing.

Nina Waters: Hmm… almost everything I read is queer and it’s hard to pick. I think I’ll take the self-promotional way out – I’ve read all the stories in our upcoming anthology Many Hands: An Anthology of Polyamorous Erotica and they’re so good, so maybe check out our Kickstarter, lol. (You can’t read it this month cause it’s not out yet, but SOON!)

Okay, so where do I begin. It’s just all around such a great show. It’s very tightly written show with really good pacing (lumity happened at just the right time, I will die on this hill) It’s beautifully animated, with such good character design and worldbuilding. I love a fantasy world that’s really grimy and off-putting but still really fantastical, it’s like dark whimsy it’s so cool. All the characters are so well written, with great dynamics, the found family theme is so touching and perfectly written, seriously the dynamic between Eda, Luz, & King is perfect. It’s a lot of representation that’s good representation that because the writing is so good. It handles so many mature themes for a kids show yet is also really funny and brings me so much joy and comfort

Oh boy, here we go

Luz: perfect baby bisexual, love my black Latina baby, best girl, perfect protect at all costs. She’s like the perfect weird girl, like she’s in no way a cleaned up or Hollywood-ified weird girl, I see her and go: yes that is exactly what an awkward teen girl is like. I see so much of myself in her especially my younger self, I would have inprinted on her so hard if I watched this show when I was younger, and now that I’m older it’s just like “protect, protect at all costs” She’s really perfect as a protagonist, she’s an outsider in a new world so you can learn about the world through her but that also helps with her character development and her growing as a person. She’s really balanced as a character, her neurodivergence isn’t demonized and is part of why she’s so great but also sometime her behavior is destructive or harmful and she has to learn from it, she goes so far to help those she loves but sometimes she oversteps and ends up messing things up and takes to much responsibility on herself, she’s kind but also is really sassy and not above manipulating situations to her advantage, she’s merciful but also has boundaries and isn’t afraid to cut a bitch if she needs to. She’s insecure and fears rejection but also is a ray of sunshine in everyone’s life. She’s delightful, love my baby

Eda: harpy mama, the milf, mean femme rights, tacky femme rights, trashy femme rights, MY MOM. I love her so, I love having an older queer chronically ill coded protagonist, I love having a character like that be a mom. I admire her so much and she’s kind of everything I strive to be when I’m older. She’s so sassy and funny and eccentric and marvelous. I love how she acts as a mom, how’s she sassy and talks back and wants her kids to talk back to her, but she’s still really soft and caring and incredibly protective and would do anything for them. She’s so strong, she’s been through so much. She’s been misunderstood and shunned since she was a child, been dealing with a curse that made her hate herself for most of her life, had to fight off her family’s attempts to cure her, lost the love of her life because she couldn’t accept help. She has such low self worth and blames herself for things that really aren’t her fault, and in a lot of ways doesn’t think she’s worthy of help, but she’s growing so much and still cares so much about those she loves, and cares for those who are rejected and abandoned as well. She gives me happy feelings.

Surprising not a lot. I really like non-binary she/they luz and kinda like the idea of trans-femme Eda. This isn’t really a head canon but my interpretation of Stan/Eda being divorced is that while Stan never got over her, Eda has mostly forgotten this ever happened (side note: Eda’s stages of grief definitely included a horny stage, and since I probably won’t find a another time to mention it I don’t think Eda nor Raine were chaste in the years after them breaking, nor should they have been, I’m against the idea that you’re only allowed to be with/in love with more than one person, they were apart for twenty god-damn years) oh and this is just softly cute to me: Raine and Eda aren’t really big on pda, not because they’re ashamed they’re just private like that, so they only hold hands when they’re around people they really trust and also they sneak in kisses when they think no one is looking, so is kind of a big deal if someone like Luz happens to see them kids. I’m torn between Blondie being gay or bi, doesn’t really matter either way. Nothing else comes to mind right now, except really small things like that I think Lilith picked up a lot of small hobbies throughout her life like calligraphy and origami and that Amity can’t cook to save her life (that’s actually sort of implied)

roman initially teases him relentlessly because anyone with eyes can see logan has liked virgil back for at least three quarters of that long-time

when roman realizes the two are in fact blind pining oblivious dummies, he jumps at the chance to help this ship sail as smoothly as it can from where it’s been docked for far too long

roman is obviously a Professional Matchmaker - look, his name is in the word “romance”

(never mind the fact that patton is the one who swept roman off his feet with a romantic declaration at the top of a ferris wheel underneath a bright full moon)

(they’ve definitely let roman live this down. absolutely no one brings it up at every given opportunity)

so roman teaches virgil all of the important things to woo one’s true love (“he isn’t my true love,” virgil gripes, hoping roman doesn’t notice how hard he blushes. roman notices.) this includes: practicing of poetic confessions, the perfect combination of flowers in bouquets, romcom movie marathons.

to virgil’s mortification, roman invites patton to one of their lessons. to virgil’s further humiliation, patton’s brother declan tags along, and it turns out virgil’s to practice his confession on declan because he’s got that same dry wit and humor as logan, and surely he can offer the best reactions.

(declan thinks this is very stupid but he and virgil are also kind of frenemies and so declan will take any blackmail he can get his hands on)

it goes about as well as you think it would

meanwhile, one logan sanders is trying to smother himself with a pillow

“babe, you of all people should know how physically impossible it is to do that”

logan throws the pillow at his queer platonic partner

by some miracle, remy dodges it and manages not to spill a single drop of his starbucks

so as we all know, logan has been pining for virgil for quite a few years now, and as we also all know, he is a blind oblivious dummie

remy is surprised his ears haven’t fallen off yet with how much logan gushes about virgil

it would be cute if it hadn’t gotten really old like a year and a half ago

(okay, it’s still pretty cute but remy thinks a lot of things about logan are cute) (like, hello, the utter look of concentration on his face when he’s deciding which tie matches his outfit best?)

remy wants logan as happy as he can be, of course, but virgil is… well, remy and virgil kind of had some issues sophomore year that they never really resolved.

it doesn’t really interfere with their relationship now given the dynamic of their friend group. they kinda tolerate each other. but remy’s gotta give virgil the Talk - you know the one, “you so much as even think about hurting logan and they’ll never find your body”

remy and roman definitely haven’t been texting each other updates over the months, why would you even insinuate something so devious

after many shenanigans and montages of:

roman helping bolster virgil’s confidence

big bro ro helps virgil to perfect all the makeup tricks he’s learned on his own over the years. virgil understands now just how good winged eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man can make you feel.

he really does get better with pick up lines and flirting; he stumbles sometimes but it feels effortless and that’s the important part.

declan jokingly threatening to steal logan away if virgil didn’t get on with it

while virgil knows declan’s aroace ass would never, virgil does not know that logan likes him back, and so this still seems like an entirely plausible thing to worry and stress about

sometimes, declan drapes himself over logan and heckles him into a debate; partially to see virgil get all flustered over logan all worked up, partially to encourage virgil to hurry up already, wouldn’t he like to be in logan’s space like this?

remy dropping hints around virgil about logan’s newest interests

virgil and logan might be close friends who have been mutually pining over each other for years, but there’s still things they don’t tell each other, or don’t get the chance to share. if remy happens to let slip that logan wants desperately to visit the new exhibit at the observatory, well, that’s neither here nor there.

and he does give virgil the Talk, a few nights before the plan is set into motion. in the same go, they mostly remedy their past issues. by the end of it, virgil wonders how it’s possible for someone to be so threatening while using pet names like “babe,” “sweetie,” and “honey” every other sentence.

eventually, virgil is deemed Ready. it is Time.

halloween is virgil’s favorite holiday and because logan loves virgil, he also loves halloween. sure, all the sweets are a health hazard, and trick-or-treating really isn’t the safest tradition, and ghosts do not exist - but virgil glows during this season. he adds autumnal colors to his wardrobe and it really is not fair how good he looks in oranges, and browns, and deep greens.

(in case we aren’t all on the same page yet, logan is Very Very Gay.)

everyone is at remy’s house. it’s definitely one of the biggest homes in their small town and so this is where a lot of the holiday parties tend to take place. the dormir family is also generally just really well liked. which means more people than invited show up but if anyone knows how to throw and manage a party, it’s remy.

anyway the plan is that virgil and logan finally get together at this party so that they can finally go trick or treating with the gang in matching costumes

it is so lame and virgil would rather forsake trick or treating completely but also he may or may not have been planning couple’s costumes for like four years now

everything is going really well!

roman and patton are social butterflies, flitting from the dance floor to the kitchen to the backyard. they’re dressed up as she-ra and perfuma, respectively. roman’s even threaded led lights into the underskirt and cape so that he’s actually glowing. patton’s flowers aren’t just a crown atop his head, they twist and weave along his arms, around his torso, and down his legs.

remy wears the same thing every year to the party: pajamas and a ridiculous pair of slippers. he saves the extravagant costumes for halloween night. he truly is a spectacular host, making sure drinks and snacks are restocked, that nothing’s being broken, and checking in on those who don’t handle the crowds too well.

logan’s dressed in a very impressive le petit prince costume - it’s so good, it might as well be a full on cosplay. (virgil definitely isn’t swooning, what?) logan sticks close to the edges of rooms, looking like he’d rather be anywhere else.

(in, for example, virgil’s arms, on the dance floor, swaying to a slow song.)

virgil is dressed as jack skellington and declan in a creepily accurate oogie boogie - everywhere he goes, plastic insects fall out of his costume. patton’s shrieks of terror at seeing the fake spiders keeps startling the party guests.

eventually - totally not by plan or anything - logan and virgil end up in the backyard together, on the old wooden swing bench on the porch. it’s nearing midnight and the crickets are chirping and there’s an owl hooting nearby somewhere. the moon is obscured on this cloudy night.

virgil thinks it’s perfectly spooky and atmospheric

logan doesn’t need to see the stars in the sky when they’re sparkling so brightly in virgil’s eyes

logan’s feet barely reach the floor and so virgil uses his heel to push them back and forth. thankfully, both of their costumes keep them warm enough in the chilly fall weather. (though they, of course, could always do to be a little bit warmer.)

virgil’s breathing is measured and it’s super obvious he’s counting them in his head. logan scoots closer and lays a hand over virgil’s. his breath hitches.

“there is something i would like to tell you,” logan begins.

the record scratch in virgil’s head sounds loud enough that everyone at the party should be able to hear it

“for the… last couple of years, i have harb-”

“hold on,” virgil interrupts, loud and sudden. “hold - wait a seco - there’s no way you’re -”

logan normally finds all manners of virgil’s speech patterns endearing but right about now, logan has a finite amount of courage and it is quickly running out

“- going to tell me right now-”

“of course i love you.”

virgil’s jaw promptly snaps shut

(he’s been working so hard on this and all this time??????)

virgil isn’t really aware of the high-pitched noise he’s making until logan reaches out and firmly presses a hand over his mouth.

“it is my fault that you have not known it all the while,”

(and the way logan says it, like a treasured line from a fairytale. virgil’s sure he’d recognize it if he could think at all.)

“i understand if you do not reciprocate these feelings and i apologize if i have made you uncomfortable with my confession,” logan is saying now while virgil’s still working on rebooting. logan lowers his hand. “i hope that this will not negatively impact our friendship. i care deeply for you and-”

virgil’s systems spark back to life and he interrupts again, this time with a short bark of laughter.

“l, oh my god, no offense, but i’ve been building up to this night for months and you just-” he has to pause to stifle his laughter. he’s equal parts giddy because logan likes him back and frustrated because logan’s liked him back for years and neither of them had done anything about it until now.

logan looks confused.

virgil wants nothing more than to kiss him.

“i’m in love with you” bulldozes over his brain-to-mouth filter instead

logan looks confused, elated, overwhelmed, stunning, he blushes so prettily, virgil thinks, and all of his practice must pay off, because the next move he makes is easy.

at some point, they’d turned towards each other. virgil’s hand cups logan’s face. leaning closer, virgil’s gaze lowers to logan’s lips, and then back up. who knew eye contact alone could be this electrifying?

“can i kiss you?” virgil murmurs.

“i can’t think of anything i’d like more,” logan responds.

(back in the house, declan grumpily shoves a twenty dollar bill into roman’s hands.)

a week and a half later will find virgil and logan in matching costumes. for their shared interest in astronomy, they’ve lowkey always been called the “starlight gays” amongst their friends, and their costumes certainly help solidify it.

logan is wearing dark jeans and a navy button down. with roman’s help, he’s lit up like the night sky; led lights form constellations that, if asked, logan will explain in a heart beat. from his shoulders trails a glittering black cape that catches the light just right (it’s impractical for trick or treating but the way virgil keeps wrapping himself up in it, snuggling close to logan’s side… well)

virgil’s the opposite in whites and greys, though he’s glowing as well, a near match to the full moon in the sky. he seems exceptionally pleased with the makeup he’s done for the costume, silver and blue and sparkling.

(they look like they should be at a con, honestly, instead of out for one night collecting candy, but it’s cute, and that’s all that matters)

and of course, they live happily ever after

(with only the slightest of teasing for the rest of their lives about their slow burn romance)

10 facts game

I was tagged by my friend @glitterandacne I’ve never done one of these before, so this should be fun! 1. I’m a huge gamer. I play a lot of games, and some of my favorites are League of Legends, Borderlands 2, Overwatch, and a few old ones for the various PlayStations, like Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank and The Last of Us. Special attention goes to Hollow Knight, a PC game that came out in 2017. It’s probably my favorite game that came out in the last 8 years. Beautiful art and design, awesome, flowing combat, GREAT soundtrack (like seriously, go listen to it right now. https://youtu.be/KkVwuWH-woA ) and is actually quite challenging! Some of the bosses were really difficult, but that just makes the game even more fun, in my opnion.

2. When I was a kid, I was allergic to lactose. And no, it’s not the same as lactose intolerance. Lactose intolerance has to do with the digestive system, basically you lack an enzyme that helps in digesting lactose. Lactose allergy has to do with the immune system, which means the body sees the proteins in milk as a threat and acts accordingly. I almost died the first time I had milk! My throat got swollen and I couldn’t breathe, so yeah. 3. I LOVE going to bed late. I’m a huge night owl, and if given the opportunity, I’ll stay up until 5 in the morning, sometimes later. And since I can deal pretty well with very little sleep (I’m fine with just 3 hours of sleep), so that helps. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like sleeping! I can sleep for a very long time too, sometimes more than 12 hours! 4. I love animated movies and cartoons. Stuff like Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, and Laika Studios. All of Laika’s movies are amazing and I love them to bits. Then some of my favorites are Zootopia, Beauty and the Beast (1991), Moana, Mune: Guardian of the Moon, The Little Prince (2015), which I highly recommend watching, and a lot lot more that I’m not gonna mention or else I’d be here all night. Some of my favorite shows/cartoons are Star vs The Forces of Evil, Voltron: Legendary Defender and Steven Universe. 5. I’m very very friendly! I always try to keep an open mind and attitude toward everyone, and I love meeting new people! I can be quite the chatter after the initial awkwardness, if there is any at all, to the point I always and constantly worry if I’m annoying or boring. If you want to talk to me, don’t be afraid! Come say hi! 6. I’m super terrified of the future. Or at least I used to be a lot more than I am now. Now I just don’t think about it and try to ignore it. But the whole concept of time moving forward without anything I can do to stop it freaks me out. The fact that I’ll die one day kept me awake many nights in the past, I remember crying a whole night when I was just 7 because I didn’t want to die. Don’t even have to say how my mom reacted to that. I guess it’s just not common for a 7 year old to worry about that. 7. I’ve never drank any alcohol or tried smoking, even though it’s normal for people my age to drink and/or smoke (I’m 20 btw). Just a personal choice I guess, but I don’t find any charm in drinking, and even less in smoking. 8. I love animals, nature and the planet! When I was little I used to want to be a biologist, which I kinda gave up on, but I’m still very interested in all that. It saddens and angers me that the human world is just growing without consideration for all the animals and the environment, and I guess that’s one of and the major reason why I don’t want to get a driver’s license. I also think humanity could do a lot better in terms of energy production than what we’re doing now, burning millions of tons of various fossil fuels. That said, dogs and cats are my top 1 and 2 animals, and lately I’ve taken a liking to guinea pigs, so much so that I’m considering getting one. So tl:dr I love all animals except wasps, cos fuck those guys. 9. I’m quite forgetful. I don’t have any memory issues (that I know of, at least), but I tend to forget things that people told me, important dates, and so on. I remember 2 years ago, on my birthday, my mom woke me up in the morning and wished me a happy birthday. All I said was “Say what? My birthday’s not today.” to which she said “Yeah it is”, and all I said to that was “I’m sorry, but I think I’d know when my own birthday is.”. Turns out I don’t. Sorry mom. 10. A few miscellaneous facts because I have no idea what else to put here and I’m running out of ideas. I’m gay and I’m from Portugal. I’m actually pretty tall, 6′3′’/190cm. I love the summer and I love swimming, but I haven’t swam in about 3 years due to ears infections. Sucks. I dislike coffee, and actively avoid anything that is coffee flavored/scented. I have a giant dog plushy that usually sits on my bed, and sometimes I sleep cuddling him. I named him Sam, and he’s very cute! Breaking Bad Actors

The myth of “Go Woke Go Broke” is hilarious to me. Everyone is out here reporting that, if you actually have a social conscious about your productions or business, you end of tanking your profits by alienating those who don’t “agree” with that position. This ain’t it, bud. Some of the most progressive shows on television, are some of the most revered. Avatar: The Last Airbender literally has no white people in it and no one cares. The show is good and respects the cultures it pulls from to build that world. Hell, even Korra has it’s moments, when it’s not up it’s own ass with the abrupt shift toward everything Avatar was against. Adventure Time was one of the best cartoons on television for it’s entire run. It grew up with the audience and never got preachy about it’s politics, even if the ending was a little forced. F*ck, man, Steven Universe exists. That sh*t ain’t my flavor but i get why it’s popular. Before anything, Steven Universe is a good show. It tells a decent story but the characters therein are what drive that show’s popularity. A stable of characters that are, effectively, all lesbian. “Woke” content can be great when the representation is integrated into the show organically. Owl House does a good job with this, or, at least it does so far. We’ll see if they start forcing things going forward. You start running into trouble when that sh*t is forced.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is how you don’t do diversity in your shows. Look, i love Catra as a character. She’s the best thing about that show. Scorpia and Entrapta re close but Catra is the only character with any semblance of an arc. I'm glad Catra got her happy ending but it was a f*cking slog getting there. The problem with the new She-Ra as a whole, is that it’s an exercise in virtue signaling. This is a bad show to begin with, bad writing, poor direction, rambling plot, but calling out the lack of quality earns you the title of sexist or anti-female or whatever else, because the diversity of the show has been weaponized by bad actors for the cause. It’s wild to me because it’s sister show, Voltron: Legendary Defender, does the exact same sh*t and is still beloved, even if the last two seasons were less than ideal. Why is there such a stark difference between the two shows? It comes down to the quality of the narrative, the focus of the production. Voltron had a story to tell. It's characters were developed and grew along with the narrative. There was a ton of diversity in that show, even a whole ass gay marriage at the end, and no one was wielding pitch forks about any of that because it was organic to the story the creators wanted to tell. She-Ra was a framework for the show runner to preach at an audience. It fell into the same trap that Star Wars under Kathleen Kennedy did and fans responded in kind. Hell, the Castlevania adaptation is one of the best shows airing now, and there was a legit bisexual love scene where Alucard was visibly bottomed and no one bat an eye, never mind the race bent characters turned fan favorites. Isaac, I'm looking directly at you. You don’t go broke when you go woke. you go broke when you get antagonistic about your sh*tty narrative being called out for what it is and use the diversity in your show as a shield from criticism. If your sh*t is bad, there isn't any amount of black dude or gay chicks that can cover that sh*t up, bro. F*cking make a better show.

I actually follow a lot of right-wing blogs and watch what could be considered toxic male YouTube channels specifically to understand that point of view. I don’t agree with anything they ever say, but I would prefer not to exist in an echo chamber. I need to have properly diverse opinions and takes to be well informed. I'll admit, though, it is exceptionally hard to see their logic, mostly because it’s racially charged nonsense, but i get why they're angry. A lot of it does have to do with entitlement and ignorance but, under all of that backwards nonsense, there is a valid point which should be considered; No one wants to be told what to think. Overtly. You can‘t put whatever message you want in anything you make, as long as it’s subtle and clever. Take Get Out for instance. That sh*t is a straight up accusation of white people and their predatory ass nature but they love that sh*t. Jordan Peele spent an hour and forty-four minutes, calling these motherf*cker out on their bullsh*t and they gave him an Oscar for it. Audiences rewarded his veiled sermon about the parasitic nature of white “culture” with fifty-seven times his budget, in profit for the studio, catapulting his directing career into the stratosphere. How the f*ck did he pulled that off when Brie Larson became the arch nemesis of every neck beard, toxic man-child, and MAGA cultists on the entire interwebs for just saying that we should have less stories about white dudes? Subtlety. Get Out is a masterclass on how to say something career-ending, while packaging it in an incredibly palatable way. Before anything that film is excellent. The writing is on point. The message is cleverly buried under layers of outstanding performances and deft direction. You’re too entertained to consciously realize you’re being directly accused of being sh*tty people. Cats aren’t looking to engage intellectually with their entertainment so you can technically say whatever you want, however you want, as long as you distract them enough to miss the sermon on a conscious level. Larson openly making her stance known to Hollywood, while commendable, is too easy. It's too direct. Sh*t makes you a target, not a hero.

Diversity matters. I think that sh*t should be in everything because the world, itself, is mad diverse. A lot of the culture here, in the states, is driven by people who look like me. Fashion, music, sports; The stuff that get the youth going is all manufactured by people with melanin. It’s mad disingenuous to present a “Hollywood so white” face to the world when the world looks so much more colorful than that. If this year has taught us anything, it’s that there is a very vocal minority that hates to see faces which don’t look like their own, prosper. Entire cities have burned because of it. Entire careers have been lost because of that. The answer isn’t to go the other way. The answer isn’t making “The Force Female.” The force was already female. Ahsoka Tano, Darth Talon, Mara Jade, and Darth Treia were all female but also great f*cking characters. Rey was a plot device that cheapened the already rich and diverse universe that Lucas allowed great creators to expand. The force was already female, and black, and Asian, and white, and blue, and green, and red, and orange, and whatever else because it was designed to be that way. Star Wars failed and sent Disney into a panic because they let a chick with an inferiority complex and massive ego, do whatever she wanted with a franchise that has existed for forty f*cking years, because Twatter has opinions and so does she. Kennedy forgot to make sure the plot around those opinions was good enough to distract you from her politics. She forgot to tell a good story and just decided to preach. No one wants that sermon in a movie, not even the most Woke motherf*cker in the world.

As a creator, myself, i get it. I’ve been on the other side of that Tumblr activism and, more than anything, it feels like if you don’t agree with whoever’s politics, you are automatically the problem. I mean, i got called racist for the way i speak by a black chick, while being black myself. It was surreal and stupid. This chick didn’t like the tone of two reviews i wrote, on a blog with eleven year’s worth of content. Like, for real? Okay. I type how i speak on that blog and i can’t help that i speak with an “urban” flair. I grew up in the ghetto. I speak to my friends like this because they grew up in the same neighborhoods. I actually have a firm grasp on grammar and syntax. I’m a proper writer by trade, working toward getting my first novel published and, guess what? It’s chock full of f*cking diversity. Not because I'm preachy, but because that’s a realistic portrayal of the whole ass world. Because i grew up in a neighborhood that had White people and Mexican people and Asian people and Indian people and Native people and Pacific Islanders and Fijians and whatever else. The world is, inherently, diverse and catering to one extreme or the other is f*cking ridiculous to me. Just tell good stories with strong characters. If the narrative is accessible, you can inject whatever the f*ck you want to say directly into the audience but you have to have a great story to start from. You have to make those colorful characters real. You have to package that bitter pill with a sugary coat so it goes down easy for those who would refuse the dose. If not, you’re just going to antagonize the audience and no one is going to give you the time of day. They're just going to tell you to get out.

A Poem About the Girl Who Opened me up to my Own Sexuality

I am a woman, and I don’t believe in love

Love is an abstract concept to me.

A thing that exists to further the plot of a fairy tale,

A myth, derived from the logic of fools, Fools that share a fatuitous belief,

A belief that as little as one glance could awaken a terribly beautiful beast inside you.

A beast that consumes your heart and soul,

Extinguishing the rationality belonging to you.

“Soul Mate” is the term

It’s the tale of the “First Sight” connection that honeymoon phasers consistently broadcast,

Even though when you turn away and the door closes the lie sheds like a scales on a snake,

Reveling the truth that they’re magical connection is nothing short of a mad-mans delusion.

They say “Soul Mate” like everyone in the world has one.

Regardless of the face that 1/3 of people will never marry and remain single.

They say “Soul Mate” as if there aren’t empty shells of people walking around.

People, who have had their souls unwillingly torn from their body, through some of the most unspeakable means known to man.

Or empty shells of people who jut seem to have been born without them….

I’m sorry to say this,

But there is not someone for everyone.

For majority of you, there are people out there for you, maybe even several.

But the truth is that some of us will die never meeting that ”special someone”.

It is a fact that typically fills the hearts of all those who hear it with sorrow, and for some, hopelessness ensnare them.

But what I think is saddest is those who feel hopeless when presented with this knowledge.

We are all amazing creatures, beautiful and unique in our own way.

Too long have we been inundated with the concept that we are not enough for ourselves,

That we need to be dependent on finding and holding on to the “perfect” person in order to be “complete”.

To me, this epidemic is sadder than never finding that non-existent “soul mate”

But perhaps there are worse things still….

I did not write to share my what some call my “bleak view” on love,

No,

I want to tell you of the girl who helped me understand and accept my sexuality as a gay woman,

The week before Christmas in 2014 I met a girl online.

You see… She simply wanted to make friends.

And though I claimed the same thing, my intentions were very different.

All I wanted was to feel the touch of her skin on mine.

I wanted to wrap around her like a boa constrictor to its prey,

And once I’d had my fill, to slither back into a hole…. never to be found again.

I had propositioned a proper meeting; face-to-face, all the while hungrier intentions swarmed though my mind.

Much to my astonishment, she had agreed and set a time and place.

Christmas Eve, 2014

I walked with a friend of mine (one who was significantly more intimidating than I was

For the sole purpose of the possibility that I would run into someone with much more sinister appetites than mine)

I approached the destination we were to meet and there she was, waiting for me.

When I was only a few feet away and before I got a good look at her, I felt her arms fling around me.

Now, this was not an embrace that lovers share but nor was it the embrace of strangers meeting for the first time.

It was something in between, something I did not understand.

She released me from her hold and struck up a conversation.

In all honesty, I can’t even remember what that conversation was about.

Because I was trapped you see….

I remained rooted to the floor barley able to form proper responses to whatever she was excitedly talking about…

But I will tell you what I do remember of that conversation….

She was taller than me, but only by inches (neither of us were even 5’ tall)

She had long curly hair, pulled tight into a bun that perched itself perfectly off the crown of her head.

Her hair was the color of melting chocolate, providing a delicate contrast around her pale complexion.

I remember Her nose,

It seems odd I know,

But it was centered perfectly within the frame of her face, perky enough to fit inside of a bottle cap.

And while I was observing she turned her head and I noticed the hole where a septum piercing used to live.

I remember her smile. A genuine smile that was naturally flawless. Straight, white teeth, outlined by a pair of velvet lips.

Her smile was radiant. It seemed to shine brighter than the sun itself, and with every giggle, every grin, her smile would light up her face as if she were glowing.

And when the corners that smile would touch her eyes…..

Oh… her eyes……

Those big, round, brilliant blue/gray eyes that looked as if they could freeze you with merely a glance.

And frozen I was. Feet frozen to the floor, lips nearly frozen shut, I could hardly breath for it felt as if my lungs seemed to fill with ice.

But then she’d smile…

And as her skin glowed from its brilliance the corners of it touched her eyes and they twinkled as if encrusted with millions and millions of microscopic diamonds

Immediately, I felt warmth inside me, starting from my core and radiating from my body until the parts of me I once thought frozen from her piercing wintery gaze, were thawed.

My lips seemed to be able to move in conversation, the icy air that had filled my lungs seconds prior has evaporated and the ice holding my feet in place simply melted as she took my hand and led me onward.

I did not know where our destination was, nor did I care.

Half of my brain seemed to be temporarily blinded by her radiance and the other half was like a sponge, soaking in every bit of her.

I was paying attention to what she was saying now. Her likes, her dislikes, interests, stories,

I wanted to hear it all,

Right down to the peach ring candies, which I despise, but ate anyways because they were her favorite.

She took off her winter coat and my eyes glazed over her porcelain skin, which acted as a canvas to beautiful pieces of ink that stretched across it.

I immediately started to examine her many tattoos, marveling at the beautiful ornate inked owl spanned out across her chest.

We finally sat down to have a proper conversation, and found myself significantly more relaxed.

By now I started opening up to her and we started to understand each other.

By this time the hunger that drove me here in the first place was all but forgotten…

All I wanted was to sit there and talk with her, and I didn’t want it to end.

Eventually we had to part ways.

As I dropped her off she looked at me with those eyes of hers and once again I froze.

I should have gotten out, opened the door, and said goodbye though a gesture that said all that I had left unsaid that night.

Instead, I froze

Sitting in the passengers’ seat of my moms van she attempted the same embrace she greeted me with but with great difficulty and much awkwardness.

A slight pause lingered the second the awkward embrace broke.

Our were brains and on fire with no knowledge on how to proceed,

But the promise of a kiss seemed to hang in the air, Fading fast, and with a clumsy goodbye that was half-shouted it finally died as she opened the passenger door turning a delicate shad of pink as she said goodnight.

I drove off with that same paralyzed feeling as when I first gazed into those eyes. But a fire was searing through my brain and chest.

Days later I moved hundreds of miles south, and shortly after that, she moved hundreds of miles west.

No facebook, no phone number, and the online profile I first met her on had disappeared.

Years passed and yet, somehow, we connected again.

Excitement roared inside me with a new confidence, I wasn’t going to screw up this time.

She was in a relationship.

My heart stopped.

I had to keep telling myself “you don’t know her, you met for a day”

But a dull ache remained all the same.

But their relationship was rocky and I always went out of my way to make sure I was there for her whenever I read that she was down or having a rough time.

I even told her how I felt about her, which was conflicting and confusing,

Regardless, sometimes we talked a lot, sometimes not at all. But she never forgot me, and I never forgot her.

Her relationship ended, and I plucked up the nerve to ask her to be my date for a wedding. She agreed and I was ecstatic.

Finally! I had the chance to say all that was unsaid and put all those lingering actions from years prior into motion.

Then a week later the announcement was made

She’s engaged….

I was even asked to be a bridesmaid.

She seems just so happy. Who could ask for more than that?

I don’t believe in “soul mates”

I don’t believe in the notion of “love-first-sight”

But if such things did exist, this would have been it.

I do not believe in love

But perhaps I just tell myself this,

To abate the pain of losing the only one I might have ever truly loved

Then again…. you cannot loose that which was never yours…..

Have you ever held hands with the last person you texted? last person i texted was my cousin and his wife at the same time. i don’t think i’ve ever held either of their hands. only one i might have held hands with is my cousin and that would have been years ago when we were younger. i think we used to play red rover so i might have for that. i just don’t remember who all used to play red rover. Can you remember the last conversation you had before you went to bed last night? Who did you talk to, and what did you talk about? i think the last person i talked to was jacob and i was just saying i knew things were frustrating right now while we are all trying to get situated in the new house, but that it’ll get better and easier. Are you okay? Be honest. If not, why not? i’m honestly not okay, but i’m trying to be for wy. i have to be. but last night my family got in a huge fight and my brother said he’s never coming back to this house just because my parents went to a movie and dinner with us, that we invited them to, after rose and lilli went to bed. well, rose woke up while we were at the movie and got in erin’s makeup that she left open and on the floor in her room... got makeup in their room and on the banister. we were able to get it cleaned up, so no big deal. erin laughs off the mess in her room and my brother loses it. they start fighting. then he starts telling my parents they’re not allowed to leave the house without lilli and rose (one: totally not his kids so not his call, two: lots of parents i know go out with family or friends when their kids are sleeping and another person, especially an adult is at home, and three: we invited them to the movie, they wouldn’t have went if we hadn’t). and he also told my parents that they need to be responsible for themselves because evidently they aren’t since they are living in this house with us. but we wouldn’t even have this house if it weren’t for them paying for the down payment. and we’re fine with them living here... they are going to help pay the bills, and whatever. and this isn’t even my brother’s house to be all shitty about. we weren’t happy she did what she did but she’s a kid, and it happens. now my parents are upset and depressed and my mom is saying this isn’t their home now and they’ll try to be out in two months... but we really don’t mind them being here while they get their stuff together. they’ve done it for us forever. it’s all just a mess.... Well, how’s your view of things today? not very good. pretty bleak really. i have to do laundry and work on getting our room done (because that’s pissing jacob off more than what happened with rose) but i am seriously lacking motivation to do shit today after last night. i’m just.. depressed.

How do people get addicted to such weird things, like house cleanser? i really don’t know. i think in most cases, they just try it one day and they like it, or it helps them feel better somehow, so they just keep doing it.

Do you watch Skins? never seen it. never been interested based on the little i know of it. Know any Gleeks? (yourself included) my sister watches it, but i don’t know if she is a “gleek”. Do you know what Bosco Sticks are? yeah. my high school used to serve them. everyone seemed to love them, with the exception of me. haha.
