Sparkle

Word of the Year. When I was trying to choose my word for this year, something to set my intentions around and to focus on throughout 2024, nothing really jumped out at me like it has in the past. So, I googled a list of “Word of the Year” options and made a list of all the words that really resonated with me. From my list, the two that stood out the most were “Sparkle” and “Thrive.” This past year, and MANY throughout my life, has been about surviving. Just making it through the best I can. But I strongly believe that we were not put on this planet to “just survive.” We were meant to thrive.

Inspired by myself going overboard with the glitter last night for New Year’s Eve, I chose “Sparkle.” I feel that “Sparkle” encompasses thriving as well. After all, it’s difficult to sparkle and shine when you’re just getting by, scraping through, surviving. 2023 was the year of Barbie, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Princess Peach, and an overall growth in women supporting women. I want to keep that momentum going for myself. One thing all these (real and fictional) women have in common is that they thrive. They sparkle and shine. But how will this word apply to me?

She leaves a little sparkle wherever she goes.

This has always been one of my favorite quotes. Last night I may or may not have left a literally glitter trail everywhere I went. But for serious, in life I want to be the woman who enters a room and there is always at least one person (preferably more) who notices and/or is happy to see me. I want to be the woman whose presence leaves a mark. When I leave the room, I want people to have good feelings and nice things to say. I want to be noticed and I want it to be for my joy, my confidence, my kindness, my generosity, my compassion. I want to be a woman that others aspire to be more like. I want to be a blessing and not a burden. I want to be one of the first people that other people, especially the women in my life, want at their dinner party, book club, networking event, etc. I want to leave a positive, impactful, and lasting impression on everyone I meet.

This means working on loving myself. It means to quit seeking approval from outside and start building my confidence from within. It means starting to believe that I can be, that I am already, this woman that I aspire to be. If I don’t believe it, no one else is going to.

Never let anyone dull your sparkle.

My confidence has to come from within and so does my joy. I cannot let other people or bad situations bring me down. I won’t be the person I want to be if I let that happen. This doesn’t mean “positive vibes only” or pretending to be happy when I’m not. It means feeling my feelings but choosing to rise above. It means fortifying my cracks with gold. It means if I find myself in a pit, I am going to claw my way out and emerge victorious. It means never going back to “just surviving.” And it means being truthful, vulnerable, completely raw, but being able to find joy in the pain. Not plastering a fake smile on my face and pretending everything is okay but choosing to find the positive and the lesson in every situation. It means being truly authentic. The strongest and shiniest diamond needs to be tested to see if it’s real. Surface may get smudged but after a quick “cleaning,” it shines again. That’s what this means to me. Authenticity. True shine. Like a diamond.

Honestly, there is so much more I could say about the word “Sparkle” and about why I’ve chosen it for 2024. But for now, I’ll leave you with this.

Cater is always trying to improve the mood of any gathering he is in and Deuce describes him as being in the "terminal stages of smartphone addiction" because of Cater's constant phone-use and dedication to magi-cam, the Twisted-Wonderland-universe-equivalent of Instagram.

While Cater is very cheery and has a friendly demeanor, he will not hesitate to use his seniority to pressure underclassmen into performing tasks on his behalf. 

He has an excellent sense of balance, which aids him both in his hobby of skateboarding and in flying classes, where he often rides his broom like a surfboard. 

Cater tends to lose his cheerful facade when it is time to go home for the holidays, as his two older sisters often pressure him into doing things he doesn’t want to do.

Cater has explained that, growing up, whether something is considered “cute” or not carries a lot of weight in his family, which is possibly why he describes almost everyone he comes into contact with as “cute”. He prefers being at the school to being at home, and referred to NRC as his true home in the 2021 New Year’s event. In his lab wear card home-screen he states that he doesn’t know what it’s like to feel homesick.

Cater likes spicy food because it cheers him up when he is feeling down, and spicy ramen in particular, because posting ramen on magicam always earns likes.

Cater didn’t always dislike sweet foods, but when he was ten years old his mother and two older sisters went through a phase where they would make sweets every single day. Since child-Cater usually had a big appetite they would always pile his plate with handmade treats. At first he was happy to be able to indulge to such a degree, but over time he grew tired of eating so much sweet-tasting food. 

Whenever he tried to refuse their food they would look sad, making him feel guilty for being the source of their unhappiness, so he would force himself to eat what they made. Over time he came to dislike sweet things in general.

Cater says his sisters would also force him to do tasks like carry their bags when shopping, leave the house to buy them ice cream on a whim, etc.; demanding his help rather than asking for it. On his birthdays they would give him gifts according to what they wanted for themselves, including stuffed animals, dolls, perfumes and soaps. He says that recently, however, they've gotten better about it.

Unlike every other main character in Heartslabyul Dorm, Cater does not come from the Queendom of Roses, having been born in the Shaftlands (as were Vil, Jack, Vargas and Trein, none of whom he met before enrolling in Night Raven College). 

Cater’s father works for a bank with branches all over the country and so, growing up, he was never in any one location for more than two years. As a result, he never had a chance to form any deep friendships.

Cater explains the reason behind his obsession with Magicam in the Halloween event, which I’m going to quote directly because I cannot do it justice through paraphrasing: “Changing schools over a short period of time, you will meet a lot more people than if you stay in one place…But there is one thing that we all have in common: I leave, and everyone else stays…That’s why I like to always get along with everyone, like a circus troupe that entertains people from all over the world―and then leaves. That’s why Magicam is so great…I love how it promotes casual, light relationships.”

Rook calls him “Monsieur Magicam”, while Floyd refers to him as “Hadai-kun”, meaning “Crimson sea bream”.

His smartphone case was purchased for him as a souvenir by Lilia. An extremely popular design, Cater used his unique magic to try and win the chance to buy one as they were only being sold raffle-style, and failed. Lilia will now occasionally insinuate that he wants to be paid back one day.

In his labwear vignette, Cater attempts to infuse mandragora with magic, in an assignment where the mandragora subsequently "reflects the qualities" of the magic-user as they grow. Lilia and Vil's mandragora begin to dance, and Cater's first attempt results in a "bright pink mandragora with big, round eyes". Cater explains that, due to pressure from his sisters, "make it cute" has been burned into his brain.

While his second mandragora poses as though playing the guitar, his third mandragora ends up "hugging its knees and huddling in place".

Cater’s unique magic is “Split Card” (In Japanese: “Fluttering Deck”), and it creates identical clones of Cater himself, though using the spell for an extended period of time is apparently very taxing.

It is unclear if there is a limit to how many copies Cater is capable of producing at one time. In-game he has only ever created a maximum of four simultaneously, but it has been hinted that he can do more, and he creates many more at once in the manga.

Something different for New Years Eve

I do have a lot of art on the back burner to share, but, since I’m so caught up in KenUno hell rn, I found my old KenUno logs all the way back from 2017! Wanted to share some of my favorite pieces from it

The cover of the first book 😩 this brings me back, it was just about a year after I graduated high school LMAOOO (also me having the ability to fill up a tiny sketchbook in about 6-7 months, couldn’t be me nowadays unfortunately. Kinda cheated as I only drew on one side of each page; paper was really thin.)

More angst drawings. I remember being so proud of the hands in the pic on the left.

Some cutesy fluff to heal my soul. God I remember being so obsessed with their relationship; how history repeats itself lmao.

Still to this day, one of my favorite kisses I’ve ever drawn. The passion and yearning I captured in this? The way Zaraki is holding on to her as though she would disappear before his eyes if he let her go? My ass was onto something and I’m gonna have to keep this energy for the new KenUno stuff I wanna draw.

I remember when Kubo posted sketches of when he was a guest at Lucca 2017 & I went absolutely feral at the Kenpachi sketch. He had the aviators on, his chest was showing, his little head tilt; GOD

Wanted to do something a little cheeky with Kenny in that outfit. He’s fully aware of what he does to us methinks.

This is the last page of the first KenUno log. Just like the inside cover up at the top, this one still tugs at my heart, paired with the Shakespeare quote (I believe this is Shakespeare? I’d have to double check). The gentle touching of their hands, it’s so quietly romantic.
