Imitation is what Camilo does, and the visual side of things is obviously the easiest for him. He can take on any appearance he wants, with features vastly different to his own being the hardest, and features similar to his own being the easiest. But Camilo can also replicate sounds. Voices, yes. Again it’s easier if they’re similar to his own, but with enough practice he can do others as well. He usually doesn’t bother, because it takes a lot of time to perfect a voice, so if he won’t use it much, it isn’t worth the effort.
But it’s not just voices. With enough practice, Camilo can near perfectly recreate the sound of most things he hears, like a firework, or a clock chime, or the creaking and/or shutting of a door.
His current goal: Learn how to mimick a toucan’s call so well that Antonio can understand him.
#poor dolores honestly#because every now and then she'll just hear him dropping the same thing over and over and imitating the sound every time#for like a solid hour#camileoleon (camilo)#happy little headcanons (camilo)#my merry me (ooc)

Madrigals Sleeping Headcanons 😴
Part 1: Grandkids
Mirabel
-Has extremely vivid lucid dreams that she tells everyone about at breakfast, soon realizing they’re absolutely nonsensical when said out loud
-Every night, without fail, wakes up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water
-Accidentally sleeps in late frequently
-Often times talks in her sleep, usually just quiet mumbles
Luisa
-Always needs to hug/hold something
-Easily disturbed by any sudden noises, she’s a protector at heart. Thankfully she can go back to sleep fairly easily when she knows there’s no danger
-When she wakes up, she’s got crazy hair frizz and her voice is so deep and raspy… and yes, it’s extremely hot
-She doesn’t snore but her breathing is very powerful, like listening to ocean waves
-Doesn’t really collect a whole bunch of stuffed animals, but has this one teddy bear from when she was little that she could never get rid of and she sleeps with it when she needs it
Isabela
-Won’t admit it but has the WORST case of snoring in the whole family.
-Sleeps super sprawled out with her limbs going in literally every direction
-Somehow wakes up with perfect hair
-Always needs earplugs and an extra soft sleeping mask or else she will riot
-Will only sleep on the SOFTEST of mattresses
Dolores
-Bedroom is soundproofed but wears earplugs every night for extra measure
-Loves essential oils to help her sleep
-Very easily woken up by any little noise
-Sleeps silent as a mouse and still as a doll
Camilo
-Takes second place for the worst snoring in the family
-Always has the funniest or wackiest dreams and entertains everyone in the morning by retelling them
-Antonio loves hearing about his silliest dreams
-Can fall asleep in 2 minutes or less. When he’s out, he’s OUT.
Antonio
-Always needs a bedtime story before bed and either Mirabel, Camilo, or Luisa are the ones happy to do it for him.
-Has every animal plushie imaginable. His goal is to find every kind of animal in the world
-Instantly comes to Mirabel and cuddles her when he has a nightmare
-Always needs a night light

🎃 HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!
I have to post some Encanto Monster AU Headcanon jumpscare right now!!!!! Not everyone, but a few of them!
Isabela - Werewolf (Or, Werejaguar rather) + OK OK OK Hear me out on this one, see my vision????? Most of the time, she looks largely normal with "cute" features that many find appealing like the little kitty ears, fangs, and tail + BUT were-jaguar form is absolutely shit your pants terrifying horrific, something she was made to feel ashamed of for its wildness and unattractiveness + Spends pre-movie full moons fully barricaded in her locked room, tangled up in her own vines to keep herself contained - everything she bottles up comes out and is entirely out of control, her wild side is trying sososo hard to get out and she's literally, physically restraining it + Always ends up with an absolutely shredded room the night after the moon, snaps at anyone who ever mentions it or attempts to help her out + Post-movie after she comes to accept every part of herself and grow into her own, she starts to gain control over the beast form and spend more time in it willingly, no longer ashamed of looking "ugly" or acting as anything less than perfect
Luisa - Gargoyle + A powerful stone guardian that guards the family home restlessly + She doesn't actually need to sleep, but does go into a dormant "statue" state when exposed to direct sunlight. + Incredibly physically sturdy but not immune to damage. She can crack and break, though her pieces can be put back in place if they fall + It is debatable if she can feel pain in the same way more flesh-based beings can. She does not need to eat or breathe and cannot drown + While she has wings, she is too heavy to properly fly and uses them more to shield others from danger or glide short distances
Mirabel - Satyr + A real silly billy, she's got the fuzzy legs of a goat and little tiny horns under her hair + She's very musically inclined and can play several different instruments. She's creative, clever, and loves to frolic in the sun! + Her charisma stat is absolutely off the charts, others often find it very easy to relax around her as her monster species is not particularly threatening or associated with danger + Often faces underestimation and struggles with not being taken seriously. Her lack of scariness coupled with her inhuman nature can be a cause of direct bullying that more threatening monsters may not have to deal with.
Dolores - Vampire + Oppoisite Isabela, she's a little withdrawn and shy, probably has big ole' sensitive bat ears with perfect pitch detection + Veeeery sensitive to light and sound, she enjoys the quiet of night and often sleeps during the day + She can turn into a little bat and flutter around, but sometimes forgets she's easy to miss like that and jumpscares people who thought they were alone in a room + She's capable of sitting in complete silence for extended periods of time and is extremely patient. Her night-vision is impeccable. + Rumors have spread that she can read minds and has some psychic abilities, but these are entirely unfounded. She's just perceptive and very nosey.
Camilo - Changeling + A funky fey dude, taken in as a baby by Pepa and Félix when he was found abandoned in the wood + He's strongly attuned to magic in the environment and specializes in illusionist tricks + He has pointy ears, sharp teeth, and unnatural eyes that reflect light in the dark but shifts to a more human look most of the time to blend in with others + Quietly a little insecure about what he really is when he looks in the mirror without a disguise but tries not to dwell on it for too long
Antonio - Chimera + A strange little mix of creatures, he's got the upper half of a human with the lower half of a jaguar. He's also got the wings of an Andean condor, ears of a tapir, and an anaconda's tail! + The little dude climbs, flies, and swims - he's an ATV with endless energy who loves to shove himself into tight spaces to explore + Outgoing and a bit wild, he easily befriends other animals but sometimes finds people wary of him. He is very careful with his claws and fangs, but parents sometimes worry that he'll play too rough and hurt their kids. This makes him very sad! + Incredibly intelligent and inquisitive, he is active for long periods of time before collapsing into a nap and restarting the cycle
Bonus Augustín & Julieta - Headless horseman and Parrot Harpy I think Augustín would be like the headless horseman and constantly (literally) lose his head and Julieta would be a parrot harpy with colorful, blue plumage - incredibly intelligent and caring for her kids

Camilo Analysis
Bruh, who even is Camilo? He is arguably the Madrigal we get the least real characterization for, other than Teenage Boy, which is a very broad category of person. So as per usual, it helps me to get my thoughts in order if I write this stuff down.
First, Mirabel introduces Camilo through song and we right of way see him shapeshift into a young mother so he can sooth her baby while she takes a nap. That's actually a really great way to imply several things about his character (oh my god guys, this movie is so well written).
Thoughtful enough to offer a new mom a chance to rest
Comfortable caring for infants (probs helped care for Antonio?)
More patient than I would have thought, because taking care of a baby while the mother rests is not a quick and easy favor
Sort of implies that he likes kids
Then Mirabel sings he "won't stop until he makes you smile today" while he turns into multiple people and doing goofy stuff. Everybody already knows he's an entertainer at heart but I gotta add it to the list anyways.
5. Likes making people laugh
6. Plays around with his gift a lot
Moving on to Antonio's party, he's the guy greeting all the villagers by name, and he changes his energy to match each person.
7. Knows a lot of the villagers
8. Charming and personable
9. Respects his elders (kisses the old woman on the cheek)
He jokes around with Antonio, probably in an attempt to soothe his nerves, and teases his Pa. This reinforces points one, four, five and six. If this was a different list, I would talk about what it means that Camilo is clearly comfortable teasing his father, despite the seemingly stern reaction Félix has, but I digress.
He stands with Julieta while Antonio and Mirabel walk to the door, giving birth to a lot headcanons about them being especially close, and I'm going to roll with it.
10. Of his siblings, he's closest to Julieta.
Then he's very excited for Antonio as he discovers his room, it's actually the happiest we see him in the movie (other than perhaps when he's dancing in We Don't Talk About Bruno). So:
11. Supportive? Or maybe just enjoys seeing other people happy?
Plot happens, fast forward to breakfast when he pretends to be Dolores so he can get double the food. Then teases Isabela about Mariano, something he does a lot in the movie.
12. Likes food.
13. In his Little Shit era
Fast forward some more, all the way to We Don't Talk About Bruno. He absolutely kills it, and clearly enjoys the whole production. If you're like me and you headcanon that the musical numbers happen in universe then we can conclude:
13.5. Fucking loves living in a musical
And if you headcanon they don't:
14. Enjoys telling stories.
15. Probably hasn't thought through the consequences of telling everybody his Tío is a seven foot tall boogy man that feasts on screams. Which is very normal for a fifteen year old boy.
Teases Isabela about Mariano again. More plot happens. Time For Dinner. Dolores gossips to him as soon as she can, then he immediately gossips to his Pá. When Félix accidentally spits his drink onto Mariano, Camilo has to hold in a laugh. It's possible he doesn't really like Mariano, he keeps making jokes about the guy, at the very least he doesn't take him seriously. I wonder if he's the sort of guy that prefers to hang out with women?
16. Close to his sister.
17. Close to his father.
18. Shapeshifts reflexively/accidentally.
More plot. We see him try to soothe his mother.
19. Takes care of his Má. Pepa is literally unable to hide her emotions, so it would make sense that, through no real fault of her own, the kids slowly learn to take care of her as they grow up. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and all. On the flip side, the fact that sun beams come out whenever they get home from school or learn a new skill probs means the kids can never doubt that Pepa loves them. Plus, she likely has the easiest time transitioning from a parent-child relationship to a parent-adult offspring relationship of all the adults. So Camilo might be growing closer to his Má as he gets closer to adulthood.
The longer the plot goes on the less we see him. He's clearly frustrated with his gift glitching on him, but that doesn't really tell me much. It's a situation that would frustrate anyone and they don't show us how he handles those negative emotions. They also don't show us how he handles hearing the end of Mirabel's and Abuela's argument. Rude. They do show us him leaping to the candle's aid while the house crashes down around him so clearly:
20. Sees the Miracle as more important than his own safety.
The house falls, the candle goes out, in the background we hear him first remark on his gift being gone, then wonder how this will effect his little brother. We already know he enjoys using his gift, I can theorize he's made Being a Shapeshifter an important part of his identity, but all we have that's concrete is:
21: He doesn't just enjoy his gift, it is important to him.
22. Empathetic.
Mirabel runs off, resolution happens, Mirabel comes back. He is the one who cuts through the reunion to point out their house is gone, and even gets a little exasperated when he catches a bit of flack from Félix.
23. Not an optimist. Might be a pessimist, but most likely just not particularly sentimental.
For the rest of the scene he exists in a state of confusion. The hits start coming and they don't stop coming. Apparently Tío Bruno is just suddenly back now? And it kind of seems like half the family isn't surprised or asking any questions?! There's not a lot of conclusions I can draw from him being shocked and confused that Bruno just sort of appeared out of nowhere, I think most people would be. And unlike the parents or the older cousins, he doesn't have enough memories from when Bruno was around to be swept up in the joy of seeing him again. His reaction is relatable and endearing, but not very revealing.
The last character moment we get is when he tries to twirl the shovel around all fancy, almost drops it, then checks to make sure Mirabel wasn't watching. It reinforces things already mentioned, like him being showy, and wanting to entertain those around him, but also:
24. Wants to be seen as cool. Another very normal trait for a teenage boy.
It is interesting that the first person he looks at is Mirabel, I can't help but wonder if that would have been the case at the beginning of the movie. There's room for interpretation there, but regardless, by the end of the movie:
25. Respects Mirabel's opinion.

Ballet au thoughts and ideas
Yes, they do have a big dance studio and a record player to play some classical vinyl records on a gramophone record player. Most of the music is from Alma’s time, gramophones were invented in 1887 so I think Alma would have one.
Alma isn’t hard on her if Mira makes a mistake. Alma, of all people, knows that mistakes happen and you can’t be mad or upset at them. Just get up and try again. Neither does she tell Mirabel to watch her weight, she’s seen all body types doing ballet back in her day so she would never say anything of the sort.
She also likes sharing stories of her past ballet experiences with Mira. She does sometimes get a little choked up about it but pushes through to tell the story.
Also, Alma told her all about the famous stories ballet dancers danced to such as swan lake, the nutcracker, la bayadère, Giselle, and the sugar plum fairy.
I have a feeling that the sugar plum fairy is her favorite story because 1. It’s a good story and 2. She was in a play about it when she was little.
And yes, Alma is on a nostalgia kick and pressures Mirabel to do it more. And doing ballet with instruments is not the “perfect” way to go. But I believe Mira isn’t as stressed out as the others, she just feels like she is being a little forced to limit herself (don’t worry, she dances with instruments when Alma isn’t around)
Bruno doesn’t really mind though, he sees a new side to his mother that he rarely ever saw so he’s happy for both of them.
You know how everyone headcanons that there’s a big stage in Camilo’s room? Well Mirabel’s is a little bit bigger than his, like dis
That was by Alma’s request as well
When Mira’s in the mood for it, she’ll do a couple shows inviting the whole village to watch. When it comes to shows, she sometimes does solo ones, shows with alma, or with the village ballet dancers. And if she can, she’ll sing in them, which is 90% of the time.
Casita often helps with the props or FX just to make things a little more magical, and they're kind of like a built-in stage hand too.
Angst section, you don't need to take it seriously, but I needed to put these thoughts somewhere:
For angst, everyone thinks Alma’s playing favoritism (like in the werewolf au). But no one talks about it. We all know she isn’t but y’know.
On top of that, Imagine how flabbergasted the triplets (yes, Bruno stayed) are when they see Alma doing ballet. They do know what it is, they’ve seen the small ballet class in the village. But they didn’t know Alma knew it, you gotta know how hurt they felt knowing that they’re mother didn’t let them know something that their sabrina/daughter knows.
I would be a little upset, how you gon let my child/niece know something that I never knew about you? And TEACH it to her?!
Julieta and Pepa however, feel there is some favoritism going on.
Bruno doesn’t really mind though, he sees a new side to his mother that he rarely ever saw so he’s happy for both of them.
More angst tehe; for some “odd reason” most of her family, ( except bruno, antonio, luisa, agustin, and felix) can’t come to her shows. They're either “too busy” or “too tired” or “ it’s too loud”. All of those things are lies, of course. Pepa, Julieta, Isabela, Camilo, and Dolores are never that tired, or that busy, and Mirabel made Dolores ear muffs just so she can watch the show.
You best believe Alma isn’t pleased with this behavior and sometimes has to force them to come.
“You can’t be that tired to miss your prima/daughter/sister’s show. You have missed them for the fifth time and I’m tired of it. I expect you to be there on time or else, and I’m NOT taking no for an answer”
And of course, they are blown away by Mirabel’s flawless work of ballet. But they won’t admit that they’re too pressed.
RAHHHHH❗❗
Nice to see there's a company. Can't really get behind the family for their excuses tho like. Seriously, why are you so pressed, shouldn't you be happy??? I mean it's not like she just acquired the skills through magic, she has to work hard everyday to get that good. Like stop being so salty and just admit that she's good 😭 pride isn't a good color <33
Shootout to Bruno for staying and going to the performances❗❗❗ And the other family members who go to the performances as well. Major W's on their parts <33
Funny little idea. A suggestion. Luisa absolutely ADORES watching Mirabel and loves going to her shows and watching them. Like Luisa is arguably one of, if not the busiest Madrigal, and she still will straight up drop whatever she's doing (or rather finish up whatever she's doing) and go straight to wherever Mirabel's preforming. And if she's doing a public performance in like the plaza or whatever, she'll just. Stand there and watch. She'll have whole donkey's on her shoulder and just stand there and watch.
Luisa ties the ribbons on her shoes so they look like pointe shoe ribbon and. She helps Mirabels tie her bun when she goes to practice. I think Luisa would peek in on Mirabel's practice when she's at Casita.
Luisa trying not to scream out and throw flowers at Mirabel while she's performing:
Just an idea of course <333

Hi! Do you have any headcanons about what Dolores' and Mariano's (like, the Mariano from Rumble Thy Bellyful) wedding will be like?
WOW THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION... If I were to write that fic, how would it go...?
I think a lot of the story would revolve around Alma, Pepa, and Dolores, who would all agree upon a very big traditional wedding. I think it would be a lot of Alma & Pepa re-hashing what went wrong with Pepa's wedding as they carry out the bulk of Dolores' wedding planning, and Dolores, starry-eyed, completely indifferent to anything but the notion of marrying Mariano, totally neutral on every decision, outwardly stoic and inwardly just glowing with joy. I think both Alma and Pepa lose a little control of the situation, I think some stuff happens, I think it's probably Bruno's fault just because that's funny, and I think it all goes disastrously wrong...
And then Pepa and Alma look at each other, I think, re-living the moment last time, and reflecting on how things were done then, and now looking to Dolores and Mariano, because Mariano (with help from Mirabel and Camilo and Antonio, of course, who else, it's my fic) has put together this ragtag romantic thing for her and it's the only thing in the world she cares about. Dolores, in a ruined dress and no shoes, just radiantly happy.
And Alma and Pepa laugh it off, and Bruno finally manages to break the tension with laughter, and they hand things over to Félix, because he's the guy who knows how to have a good time under any circumstances, and they put together a messy little party anyway. ("Her wedding was just like ours," muses a dreamy Félix, "The most beautiful day in my life... Don't you remember?" And Pepa does remember.)
...
...Gosh, that was a lot more detailed than I was planning on making my answer. But there, that's how it would happen! I think Bruno would especially be the butt of this episode. I think Pepa and Alma learn something valuable in this episode and Bruno will never in his life learn why he shoudn't have made the rain joke at Pepa's wedding.
I guess Mirabel or Camilo's POV would appear somewhere. They're probably riffing about what they want from a future wedding, where every time they revisit the scenario Camilo wildly changes the gender and costume of his future wedding.
It's not planned, but Isabela ends up being the best man.
#I feel like this one would need a couple of new characters to be the respective wedding parties and idk about that though.#I ain't know how that would work.#Feel free to plagiarise anything about this and extrapolate on it because - well - I won't#I also don't know how the wedding would be. I'd be really bad at planning a wedding. I'll just be like “yah I'm easy”#I am extremely curious about how that wedding will go in canon - surely one of their sideshows will get it any day now#encanto#encanto fanfic#my writing#encantoTV#encanto headcanon#headcanon

Two by Two
Being Camilo’s twin wasn’t easy when you think your gift wasn’t as ‘flashy’ or as happiness-inducing like your brother’s. As Casita breaks down maybe your power could be finally of good use.
masterlist !! two by two headcanons
Platonic! Twin! Camilo x Twin! Reader
What’s worse than one Camilo Madrigal? Two Camilo Madrigals. Well, not exactly but you might as well be. Born a few minutes after Camilo was born, you were twins with the one and only troublemaker shapeshifter of the Madrigal Family. Though you can say you aren’t as bad as your older brother. Sure you would play meaningless pranks here and there but you were surprisingly more tame than he was, acting like another much more mischievous Isabela in your Abuela’s words.
While your brother had the ability to shapeshift into different people, you had the ability to shapeshift into different animals. Safe to say the first few months of having your miracles, Encanto experienced frequent thunderstorms and rainfall. The two of you were almost the same except however for your personalities. Yet you two would insist you were identical, often wearing matching ruanas as well as matching slippers so that you two wouldn't be told apart. You were proud to have him as your big brother and had loved him so.
Although you would be a bit envious of Camilo. Turning into different animals weren’t as flashy and people pleasing as Camilo’s. Though you tried to hide the fact that you felt that way.
One would think the two of you wouldn’t be as close but you would be surprised. Camilo adored you, you were his twin, you two shared the same womb, it was natural for him to be overprotective. He’d frequently tell you that you two would stick with one another no matter what.
You can always remember the times when you two were younger, whenever you’re upset he would always be sure to defend you. Sure you’d sometimes get into little arguments and tussles but it wouldn’t even last long. He would always be the first one to cave in and apologize. Although the two of you were almost the same, you were more sensitive than he was, fighting would almost always end up with you crying and storming out of frustration.
“I’m your twin.” He would remind you with a smile that the two of you shared. “You’re my twin, we stick together through thick and thin.” Camilo would promise. No matter what you or him did, the two of you would always be stuck with one another.
Although following your little brother Antonio’s gift ceremony, as well as the declaration that cracks were showing in Casita as well as the candle flickering, the two of you had ended up at odds once more. You stood by Mirabel, believing in your cousin that the miracle was dying. After all, Mirabel wouldn’t lie about such a thing. You were sure of it.
You didn't expect to discover more of yourself now that Casita was allegedly breaking down. The insecurities that you had dug deep deep down to please your abuela Alma resurfaced after stumbling upon Mirabel, while coaxing her sister to give her a hug. You didn't anticipate joining Isabela on venting out what you had thought were your flaws and weaknesses.
You grimaced as you watched Abuela’s enraged outburst. Everything was a mess.
Your primas, Luisa could barely lift an empanada, and Isabela was out of control. Then again you might have also been a part of the little flower show that Isabela had done, causing imperfect but still beautiful flowers and plants to grow. Your abuela had almost always suggested turning into animals that were beautiful in her standards. An orchid mantis, a scarlet macaw, a multicolored tanager, a peacock or a flamingo.. those were what she deemed as beautiful. Never what you liked. She never asked what you would like to turn to. Her obsession with perfection extended to you in a way. It's always been just,
(Name) turn into this..
(Name) this would look beautiful..
Ay, (Name) that animal would do no good, it must be beautiful..
And you couldn’t help but resent how she doesn’t tell off Camilo to change into 'beautiful' and 'perfect' people. Camilo was free. Camilo was free to change to who he wants and he wouldn’t get scolded for changing into something your Abuela thought was dangerous and ugly. So when you finally had the chance to be free and wild? You took the opportunity.
You had run and danced alongside them, turning into different animals you had only heard of from books as Isabela bloomed stranger but equally beautiful flowers.
A lion, leopard, tiger, and a beautiful snake too.. all of it had frightened the villagers as you ran and ‘danced’ on the roofs of Casita with your cousins and it didn’t take long until your Abuela Alma to rush in Casita, shaking with fury. Caught up with the rush, you hadn’t even had time to change back from your form, a clouded leopard with Isabela’s colorful flower stains on your fur.
You looked down as your Abuela berated Mirabel. Lips parting as she spoke to Mirabel with venom lacing her words. You tried to find the words to defend her. Still unchanging, your fur reflecting in the moonlight as you stood there beside Isabela.
“Look at our home! Look at your sister, your cousin..!” She says, appalled by your messy and wild form. At that you had slowly changed back, unable to meet your grandmother’s eyes.
“Please, just, Isabela and (Name) weren't happy.” Mirabel tries to explain as your cousin had started to pat down the colorful mess on her dress before turning to you to gently wipe the color off your face. Both of you shifting in place nervously.
“Of course they’re unhappy! You ruined her proposal and (Name), Mirabel, you managed to rope in your prima too?”
It was a back and forth before your grandmother’s voice had shakily escaped her lips.
“The cracks started with you.” Your abuela took a step forward. “Bruno left because of you.”
“Luisa’s losing her powers! Isabela’s out of control and (Name) has gone wild because of you!” You could see Mirabel's expression and you wanted nothing more but to come to her rescue.
“I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift! But it is not an excuse for you to hurt this family!” The ground shook from underneath you, Casita’s tiles cracked as Mirabel lowered her gaze.
“I will.. never be good enough for you, will I?” Mirabel’s voice felt unsteady and you could see your Tia and Tio Julieta and Agustin behind your abuela, worry written in their features. “No matter how hard I try..” Her gaze trailed to her sisters and you.
“No matter how any of us tries. Luisa will never be strong enough, Isabela won’t be perfect enough, (Name) won’t be like Camilo, Bruno left our family because you only saw the worst in him!” Mirabel exclaims. You winced at her words, looking down at your feet. You won’t ever be like Camilo. You won’t please enough people, you won’t make others happy just like your hermano did. You refused to look at your parents eyes’, clearly showing that they didn’t know how hard you struggled to please everyone by limiting who you were.
You especially couldn’t look at Camilo who, thankfully, wasn’t in sight.
“Bruno didn’t care about this family!” The skies darkened and more cracks started to appear underneath your feet.
“He loves this family, I love this family, we all love this family, you’re the one that doesn’t care. You’re the one breaking our home..!” Mirabel continued, frustration written in her features.
“Don’t you ever..!” Your abuela had taken a step forward, her face contorting in anger. But Mirabel had stood her ground.
“The miracle is dying because of you!” Your abuela’s eyes widened and she had looked taken aback, the angry expression fading from her worn and old face.
And for a millisecond everything was silent until the ground split between the two of them. Your mami had gasped, hands raised as her eyes were focused on the candle. Mirabel and Abuela had looked towards where the candle was perched, gasping.
“The candle!”
As the cracks worsened, it knocked the candle out of balance. Everyone braced themselves as the ground shook once more. Mirabel was the first to move, running towards the candle.
“Casita, get me up there!” Casita had broken one of the railings, turning it into a ladder she could climb up on. You caught a glimpse of Camilo’s figure who had looked at you briefly, lips pursed and an unreadable expression on his face. You watch him shift into different people, ducking and running to not save the candle but Mirabel.
Your cousin Isabela had grabbed a vine, swinging and attempting to help but as she did so, you caught sight of her door, flickering before slowly going out of light. Her powers went away too as she suddenly fell, and with the help of Casita had managed to get down safely.
Your brother Camilo was close, jumping to reach the roof in Jose’s form before he had turned back to himself again and you would have helped if it weren’t for Casita beating you to it. You quickly turned to Mirabel, turning into a cheetah and attempting to save her. Damn the miracle. Your cousin had helped you be more of yourself, and realize you didn’t have to worry about making people happy as long as you were happy. Your happiness came first and it took your prima to realize that.
You jumped and quickly maneuvered the debris that stood in your way, paws tapping against the cracked tiles that was pristine before. Seeing Antonio being carried away by your father, you had swiftly pushed and guided them to the way as more debris fell. You could see Mirabel reach the rooftop, and you struggled to climb up with her, running along the ladder Casita had placed down with all your might.
“Mirabel!” You could hear your Tia Julieta call out for your cousin, watching as the tiles created waves to push her back to the rest of the family.
“(Name)!” Your own mother’s voice had exclaimed, trying to reach out for you as well. “(Name)! Mirabel, leave it!”
As she struggled to reach the window, you had helped her out, letting her climb on your back, pushing her against the wall so she could have something to hold on as Casita’s roof tiles pushed her up even more. For some reason your door was still okay, still glowing despite the flickers. You can only hope you would have enough time to get the two of you out of there.
Your eyes widened as the largest tower of your home had slowly descended and you watched Mirabel as Casita caught her, creating a slide on the way down. You let out a frightened yowl as you were separated from her, your door finally flickering and going out as you shifted back to yourself, a large crash echoing as Casita came crashing down on the two of you.
Your family had quickly rushed in as the worst of the disaster had passed, dust and smoke wafting about.
“Mirabel!” Julieta’s cries filled the air with Pepa’s calling of your own. “(Name)!”
Your Abuela was settled down by Dolores, making sure the older woman was alright before she had joined the search for you. And she had sobbed, her gift being no more. Despite the times she wished her miracle was different or she hadn’t gotten a miracle at all, she wished her hearing had returned now so she could find you. She would take it all back, have her miracle enhanced to its maximum and she wouldn’t mind. If it meant hearing you again.
Camilo Madrigal had never been scared. He was supposed to be all smiles, so he could entertain, so he could make everyone happy. But as he saw you chase after Mirabel, dread pooled in his stomach.
His throat was sore as he called out your name along with your mami. No, no, he could lose his powers but not you. He didn’t even have the chance to say sorry yet. He didn’t know. If he had known what you had felt, what you had thought of yourself, he would’ve reassured you. He didn’t want another him, he only wanted one of you.
He was the first in the pile of debris, looking around for any sign of you.
“(Name), please, where are you!?” Dios, Dios, if he can hear Camilo’s prayers, please let him find you safe. “(Name), hija, where are you?!” Your mother and father had sobbed in worry.
You and Him. Him and You. Two by two, remember?
And Camilo had sobbed, desperation evident in his painful cries. The gravity of the situation weighing down on him. What if he never finds you? What if he was a twin no more? He’d give everything up just to know that you’re okay.
He was slowly losing all hope. There was no sign of you.
Memories of growing up with you had suddenly entered his mind and made him sob harder. The day of your fifth birthdays’ he had told you that he would use his powers just not to help the people of Encanto but to protect you, his baby sister. He promised to make you smile no matter what and protect that smile too. He promised that you would never be apart.
Once you had gotten lost whilst running wild in Encanto's forests in your many animal forms, exploring and not heeding any warnings or calls from your parents. As soon as Dolores had informed the rest of the family of your disappearance, he was already grabbing his ruana and a lamp. It didn't take long for him to find you, huddled inside a hollow tree, whimpering and calling out for him.
You were inconsolable, having been under the impression that you had been forgotten and abandoned. Camilo only shook his head and carried you on his back where you hugged his neck tight.
"No matter where you are, hermana, even if you were on the opposite side of the world, I'll always come and find you."
He had made you laugh, and had tried his hardest not to make you cry. He would tease you but you’d know he didn’t mean a word. He would give you seconds and when the two of you were caught, he would take the blame.
And he squeezed his eyes shut, tears continuing to roll down his freckles cheeks.
“Hermana, please..” He collapsed on his knees, hands trembling and all cut up as he had tried to dig through numerous piles of broken down walls and furniture. Antonio had curled up behind him, not wanting to believe that you were gone. Pepa and Felix had joined, pulling each other into a tight hug as Dolores stifled a sob.
“Cami..” A quiet voice had come out of nowhere and he swore he had never gotten up that fast. “(Name)?” He calls out. Was his mind deceiving him?
"Camilo," There it was again. Calling out to him and he whipped his head from side to side, looking for the source of the voice.
"(Name)! I hear you!" Dios, Dios, was it you? Were you okay? He begged to whomever was listening that it was you who he heard.
“Cami.. Mamí, Papí, Toñito..” Another call of his name and the rest of your families’ and he knew he wasn’t hallucinating anymore. “(Name)! Where are you, hermana!?” He was up on his feet, your own family following after him as hope swelled in their hearts.
A pile of furniture was situated deeper in the ruins of Casita and there you were, huddled up under the protection of the large dining room table as well as the large doors of your home. You coughed again, dust in your lungs as you breathed in.
Camilo was the first one to hold you, pulling you close and hugging you tightly as he sobbed against your hair. “Hermana,” You couldn’t look him in the eyes after what Mirabel had said but you allowed him to hold you. The next thing you knew you were both engulfed into a warm hug by your parents and Dolores who had sobbed as well, Antonio wiggling in between you and Camilo’s hug.
“I was afraid we lost you, (Name).” Pepa’s voice trembled as she gently cupped your dust covered cheek in her hands, wiping them away as tears rolled down her cheeks. She held you close, squeezing as if making sure that she wasn't dreaming. She gently held you in arm's length, looking over to make sure that you were okay.
"Mami, I.."
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Felix had gently held your shoulder and you looked down at the question as you felt Camilo’s gaze on you.
“I didn’t want.. I just wanted to make everyone happy like Camilo,” You admit. “But it’s hard with a miracle like mine.. or what once was mine. I thought if I just kept quiet, I’ll slowly love who I am and what I'm meant to be. I thought I’d be satisfied with just being.. I just wanted to make you happy.” You trailed off as you hiccupped.
“Lo siento, mamí, papí..” Pepa and Felix looked at one another before shaking their heads. “Ay, mija.. whatever makes you happy, makes us happy. Your happiness comes first and foremost. Whatever you wish to do, we will be right behind you.”
Camilo sighed softly as he gently pats your head. “You don’t need to make everyone happy, hermana. I don’t want you to be like me. I like you the way you are. I like (Name) Madrigal, my twin sister.” He says seriously.
“And besides, you think the town could take another me? We might as well be shooed out of Encanto.”
You stifled a laugh, your cries ceasing as you smiled and Camilo had mirrored your own. “See?” He ruffles your hair and your would tilt your head curiously, wondering what he had meant.
“I told you, I’ll always find you."

If you’re fine with going to see the movie, then yeah, because honestly Pepa and her family would be a interesting set of platonic yanderes imo lol
Yandere Madrigals (Platonic Headcanons)
Warnings: Psychological Manipulation, Toxic Mindsets.
A.N. – I wasn't sure how much of the family you wanted, so I did all of them at once.
A silent war is waged in Casa Madrigal, and the entire town of Encanto has a stake in it. When the skies darken and pouring rain arrives in gusts of howling winds courtesy of Pepa, every citizen reaps the consequences of the family having an argument with or a disagreement over their friend. Each member has a unique idea of how best to treat their friend, which breeds an endless amount of petty conflict but also a powerful sense of unity.
As the perceived golden child, Isabela expects to be the centre of their attention. She attempts to dazzle them by blooming rows of the flowers she has been told are beautiful and praised for growing. If this fails to win their everlasting admiration, Isabela is at a loss for what to do. For much of her life, her chlorokinesis was hailed as her best quality, leaving seeds of envy to sprout when their friend is impressed by another member of the family.
In addition to her own insecurities, Isabela encounters great competition in the form of her cousins. None of these threats are greater than Camilo, who is rich with a need for attention and is determined to steal the title of their friend's favourite Madrigal. Camilo shapeshifts into random civilians on the street, important people in their friend's life and their preferred member of the family if not himself — all to interact with them a little longer and, in his mind, build a rapport with them.
Luisa is not as hungry for attention as her cousins and older sister, but she does have a robust want to be seen as useful to their friend. She refrains from intruding on their engagements with other members of the family and instead waits for them to seek out her, asking for any tasks and chores that she can do for them every time they meet. Luisa measures her worth by how much stress she lifts off their friend and encourages them to transfer the smallest and most insignificant duties to her if she has not helped them for a while.
Before Bruno is accepted back into the family, he goes unnoticed by their friend until Dolores enlightens them or they catch him raiding the kitchen in the dead of night during a sleepover. Bruno fears the wrath of Alma and resigns himself to speaking with them through tunnels in the walls, sometimes trying to persuade them to visit his hideout. Antonio is informed of this via his nocturnal animals and Bruno's rats, but the kid is happy to keep it secret as long as he can come with their friend and receive extra time with them later.
As a magic-less individual in a household full of supernatural abilities, Mirabel struggles to retain a presence in their friend's day. Among her family's nonstop ventures to enthral them with superhuman feats, she feels that anything she can offer is doomed to be inferior to the gardens, rainbows and heavy lifting. This does not deter her from trying, however, and Mirabel seeks to claim her piece of their attention by rushing to talk to them and bring them to the privacy of the nursery when a family member steps away.
Regardless of how much their friend tries to keep their private life to themselves, Dolores hears each thought mumbled in secrecy and every twinge of fear and discomfort that sneaks into a laugh or step. She is quite loose-lipped when it pertains to secrets and wastes no time recounting everything she learned to the eager ears of her family.
As a means of vengeance whenever someone interrupts her time with their friend, Dolores withholds information and tells her other relatives not to keep the offending member updated with the latest news until either she forgives them or they apologize to her.
Mirabel and Antonio shed doubt on the fairness of this process, and while she does not approve of its underhanded nature, Alma deems it a necessary invasion to ensure their safety. As far as Agustín and Félix are concerned, eavesdropping is a silly byproduct of joining the Madrigals because their friend might as well be a member of the family. Julieta and her motherly instincts support Alma when she encourages their friend to move into Casa Madrigal, citing it as a way to provide them with the happiest life possible.
After he is accepted back into the family, Bruno lives in constant fear of giving their friend one too many negative prophecies and losing their companionship forever. He wishes to only share the good news, but the thought of them facing a hardship unprepared when he could have warned them drives him to track down their whereabouts and deliver the brutal truth. Whether Bruno slips up or Dolores overhears him, knowledge of the adverse prophecy flows back to the rest of the family and causes an uproar at dinner.
Alma leads the discussion, with Julieta and Pepa throwing in the odd comment here and there. Agustín and Félix are the jokesters of the group and fail to understand why the situation has to be so tense, aiming to keep the room stable with humour. Isabela casts hidden glares and the occasional snide remark at whoever she thinks their friend prefers to her. Dolores exposes her, and Isabela's denial leads to Pepa succumbing to the emotional chaos and summoning a storm.
Camilo seizes the opportunity to mock and impersonate whichever family member he views as his biggest competitor. Luisa is crying about how she has supposedly disappointed their friend, while Mirabel comforts her and tries to keep a foothold in the conversation at the same time. Antonio is an anxious observer for most of the event and excuses himself to play with his animals far from the dining room.
Just as it seems like the discussion cannot be salvaged, Bruno stumbles out of a hole in the wall — sand in his mouth and a rat in his hand. He lies and announces a second prophecy that negates the first. It is a desperate ploy to ease the tempers and fears of his family, and if the real prophecy comes to pass, Bruno suggests a way to fight it but paints the suggestion as a forgotten detail of his vision to preserve his innocence.

Found some tags in an old post I'd forgotten about so it's official headcanon time!
Camilo doesn't always shift for fun, or because someone's asked him to. Sometimes it's for comfort. This can work in a couple different ways.
If he misses somebody, shifting into them for a little while can help him feel closer to them again. If he needs a confidence boost, or to channel a certain way of thinking, he'll do a quick shift into whoever he thinks is most confident or best at doing what he needs to do.
And, my personal favourite, if he's scared or threatened or feels the need to defend himself in any way, he (often automatically) shifts into someone he sees as intimidating, but also, and more importantly, as a protector. It's usually his Scary Bruno impression that he goes for in those moments.

I have never made headcanons in my ✨life✨, but for this man?
For this man, I will do my best ❤️
SO.
Bruno Headcanons That Live In Here Rent-Free
Do I think Bruno is asexual? Yes. Do I think he’s the clumsiest romantic on the planet Earth anyways? Also yes.
Bruno is good at parkour, yes. But the second he sees someone he likes, that goes directly out the window, goodbye skills
I can vividly and PHYSICALLY envision Bruno leaning in a doorway trying to talk to his crush and like slipping and stumbling forward a little and catching himself and trying to laugh it off
Bruno is definitely the kind of guy to hear about or deduce some small interest you’ve got and then run with it,,, romantic or otherwise, doesn’t matter, if he thinks you’re cool he’ll collect things for you like a bird
Like say you show Bruno a cool rock you found one time?? Expect to find a bunch more cool rocks just popping up, like just in your bag or on your windowsill or something; he might give them directly but he’s way more likely to just leave them for you to find
If someone did something similar for him he would probably try really really hard not to cry and only kind of succeed
He’s really happy to be here
If you directly invite him to something, to his face, he’ll probably go; if you send him a card he’ll probably assume it was a politeness thing and will only go if his sisters do some convincing
After living in the walls for so long, he’s developed a habit of having a stash of Julieta’s food just in case
In case of what, it’s not clear even he knows, but just in case
For the first couple months he’s back, if he’s been observing a conversation without participating for a while, Bruno will occasionally get a little startled when someone talks to him
Sometimes he just kind of forgets that he’s back now and he’s part of the conversation
I don’t know, maybe these aren’t super popular headcanons??? They’re just my personal little ones
I also headcanon that Bruno and Luisa get to be unexpectedly close
I don’t really have a justification for that?? I can just see it
Also this isn’t related to Bruno but I can totally see Camilo turning into Dolores to take some snacks even though she’s already had some and then Dolores going in for seconds and when they’re like “hey didnt you already have snacks” she’s like “oh no that was Camilo, I haven’t had any yet” and nobody questions it and they’re working together so they both get to have more than they’re supposed to lol
Idk maybe these are bad, what do y’all think??

what do you imagine antonio grown up
Thank you for the ask! This ended up being a little long so I put it under a cut. Just a quick warning, my ideas of what Antonio is like as an adult might not be everybody's cup o' tea, that's not to say I think he grows up to be a jerk. The exact opposite. I just figure the guy is going to be the least traditional in his family due to the influence of the animals around him.
I like the common headcanon that Antonio grows up to be really tall. I figure he ends up taller than Pepa but still a little shorter than Luisa. Despite his height, Pepa still insists on calling him her baby even once he's a grandfather himself.
I once saw somebody reason that because Antonio hangs out with a carnivore, he gets pretty comfy with the circle of life. That makes a lot of sense to me, but I imagine it's his association with jaguars that makes him such a stalwart advocate for animal rights. Jaguars might eat other animals but they don't put them in tiny little boxes and forget to feed them. The circle of life is a part of nature, cruelty for cruelty's sake is not. So, Antonio goes around to the farms of Encanto and does what he can to ensure that the livestock are all being treated fairly. And considering he's followed everywhere he goes by at least one jaguar, he can do a lot.
In the same vein as him being comfy with the cycle of life and death, I imagine that Antonio learns what sex is basically the first time mating season comes around. He sees one of the birds preparing a nest, asks if this means they’re about to have babies and gets a frank lesson on that bird’s courting rituals. The bird doesn’t see any reason not to explain how new birds are made, and the talk is given so matter of factly that Antonio just thinks of it as a new science fact. One day his parents are reminiscing about when they were young and Antonio asks his Pá if he built Pepa a nest, the adults chuckle and say no, only birds do that. So Antonio asks if sex is also something only birds do. The silence is resounding and would have lasted forever if Camilo hadn’t broken out laughing. When he grows up he's the easiest adult in the family to talk to about puberty and wedding night jitters.
We know the warm color side of the family has game, Dolores had Mariano asking for marriage within one conversation, and despite having a very minor role in the movie Camilo has so many fangirls. Antonio is no exception. The little dude grows up with all the charisma of Félix and all the emotional intelligence of Mirabel, and there’s a roughly 7 year period between Camilo getting married and Dolores’ eldest coming of age where he’s the only single Madrigal of marrying age. Needless to say, he’s super popular with both men and women, but he’s also pretty content to just hang out with the animals all day. Until a girl a couple years younger than him gets caught kissing another girl by her parents. They are furious at her, and plan to force her to marry the first man they find that'll take an unwilling wife. Antonio finds her crying by the river, gets her to tell him what’s wrong, then says he’ll marry her and she can keep seeing her girlfriend. She asks multiple times if he’s sure, and doesn’t he want to fall in love, marry his soulmate? Antonio just shrugs, he’s happy as he is. So she agrees, her parents jump on the chance to marry her off to a Madrigal, and they get hitched.
This next part is the reason I put the warning up at the top, you can interpret it as Antonio and the girlfriends all wanting kids and going for the obvious solution, or you can interpret it as polyamorous Antonio. I sure as hell haven’t made up my mind which it is. But, he has two kids with his wife, then her girlfriend moves into Antonio’s room and they have two kids too. Nobody is sure what to think, but at this point the family is getting pretty big, and both women love cooking so whenever somebody asks Alma what she thinks of the situation she says “Not only can Antonio have as many wives as he wants, but if Isabela has another son, I’m sending Antonio to culinary school with a bag of engagement rings.” Nobody knows whether or not she’s joking, but it’s hard to argue with that. (Side note, I figure each generation has an average of three kids per Madrigal. So, factoring in spouses, by the time the youngest grandkid is having his third child that's roughly 36 mouths to feed. Which leads some people in the village to argue that Alma is serious and rightfully so.)
His kids are close enough in age that people sometimes forget what child came from which woman, and all of the kids call both women Mama and Mami. He’s pretty happy with his small army of offspring, he’s a pretty chill dude and after spending most of his life dealing with wild animals he takes to parenthood like a duck to water. This makes it even harder for anyone to complain about his strange situation, because all of his kids are so happy and well behaved.
He ends up with a pack of domesticated jaguars that follow him around. The one time a dangerous gang got into Encanto, Antonio sent some jaguars after them and that pretty much took care of that.
Even once his own kids are all grown “Tío Nio” can be found with a pile of children on top of him while he calmly reads a medical journal. There are more healers in the family than just Julieta by now, but none of them can completely heal disease, and pregnancy is still a complicated process for all species. So he reads up as much he can in order to help the animals of the village.
He is the best person to go to for relationship advice. There are plenty of people in the family who can tell you the most charming way to behave in a relationship, and Mirabel will tell you the most mature way to behave, but Antonio blends charm and maturity like no other. For example: at one point one of his nieces accidentally rubs salt in the wound that is her husband's bad day, she apologizes but he is still visibly upset. She doesn't know if he's still upset about his bad day, or if she hurt him more than she realized and needed to give a bigger apology, so she turns to her Tio Nio. He tells her to set up a day out they'll both enjoy, that way if she needs to apologize she'll have a whole day of meaningful gestures prepared, and if she doesn't she still gets the chance to spend time with the man she loves.
Thank you again for the ask! Hope you enjoyed some of these.

Bruno Madrigal had once, a long time ago, been a good babysitter. He had to watch all of his nieces and nephew at least a few times in the past, and not only they had not died under his care, he had actually became pretty reliable.
They were probably too young to remember, but there had been a time before he left when all the children of the house always wanted to hang out with him, specially Camilo, who, in a house full of women, shadowed behind the nearest male figure.
He knew how to change diapers, make bottles, cook their favourite meals, play tea time and tell good stories, both scary or for bedtime, depending on the need, the works.
But it had been more than ten years since he'd had to do all that stuff.
When his nephew sprinted into the house and asked him if he could watch the kid he was babysitting for a moment, Bruno had every reason to panic.
"I planned a prank for today, I scheduled it to happen with a timer," Camilo panted really close to his face, "I think I set the timer wrong, tío."
And with one last look to his wide eyed, freaked out expression, he rushed out of the house to what Bruno assumed was the place with the ticking time bomb.
A babble came from his arms and, frightened, he looked down to the baby girl cooing against his chest. She was about a year old, reaching out her chubby arms to try and grab the loose threads of the collar of his ruana. The muscles of his arms, thankfully, remembered how to carry a baby, his hold was steady so dropping her wasn't something he had to worry about.
He tilted his head to the side, eyeing the creature curiously, and he was imitated by it, he tilted his head to the other side and, again, the baby mirrored his action. A smile started to grow on his lips as he kept repeating the movement just to see the baby do it back.
"Camilo could have told me your name," for some people, it would probably be weird to see a grown man talking to a baby, but after ten years living among rats, he was pretty used to conversations where he didn't get an actual response, "because I'm sure you heard him call me Bruno, that's my name, but I have absolutely no idea of who you are." The baby said something in gibberish baby talk, to which he nodded. "Yes, he was very rude not to introduce us properly."
As if on cue, an explosion was heard from the other side of the village and a huge cloud of green dust paint settled on a handful of houses. "When I get my hands on that boy!" Pepa cried out a few seconds later.
"Well, Camilo is now in trouble," he nodded before looking back at the baby, "we might as well get comfortable."
He spent most of the day in the living room, having a one sided conversation with the baby whose name he was trying to guess. He changed her diaper, made her a bottle, did every thing he used to do as he remembered it, with a little help from Julieta.
The one thing he didn't remember about babysitting was the unavoidable moment where he got lost in the way the baby in front of him stared back into his eyes and he started thinking about how he was the only one who didn't have a family of his own.
Or maybe not a family per se, he loved his sisters and his nieces and nephews and, truth be told, he had never felt the same desire as Pepa and Julieta to go through the falling in love, the wedding, the whole marital life. He loved seeing the happiness Félix and Agustín brought on his sisters, but he never felt like his happiness would come like that.
But then they started having children, and while Bruno didn't want a spouse, he did like the idea of having one of those loud, messy, time consuming, sleep depriving, funny smelling creatures of his own. He had actually thought about it at length, and he understood the terms of it pretty well.
He knew very well that it wasn't a baby that he wanted, that word was rather tricky, because the baby phase was cute and all, but it didn't last more than a year and a half. He wanted a kid, a child, a tiny human that resembled him, that would search for his guidance to find their way through life and dress on his colour scheme.
And he also knew he didn't want a bunch of kids, not even three like both his sisters. He loved all his nieces and nephews, but it had always been enough having to take care of two at the same time to get overwhelmed. No, one was more than enough.
However, even one was too much to ask when he lacked the desire for a partner, so he limited himself to dreaming.
"Hi, tío," Camilo entered the living room well into the night, half covered in green and with a sheepish smile.
"Now we're matching," the man joked, cradling the sleeping baby, making Camilo laugh.
"Did Carmen give you any trouble?" So that was her name.
"Not at all." Bruno shook his head. "How much trouble did you get into?"
Camilo grimaced before answering, "I won't be surprised if I have to clean off the green with a toothbrush." The boy looked back to the door before talking again. "Thanks for helping me with her, tío. Her grandmother is at the door so I'll walk them home."
Bruno pondered, he didn't want to part ways with the newly introduced Carmen just yet. "I'll do it, you go take a bath."
His nephew looked at him with an ocean of gratefulness before turning back to his room tiredly. Bruno stood up and walked to the door, unable to hide his shock when he saw the woman standing in front of the house.
He knew very well who she was, Carmenza Ríos was a woman a few years older than his mother who walked with a cane since Bruno could remember. She'd had a handful of daughters, all of them who had left Encanto when they got married, and a husband who died not long after Dolores was born. She suffered of a never ending flow of illnesses Julieta's food had never been able to heal with her food, so much everyone just silently diagnosed it was moral penalty that sickened her.
The woman barely acknowledged the baby before starting the walk up to her house, at the very end of the street, one of the houses that had been victim to Camilo's prank. Bruno followed her silently.
He didn't know what was he expecting the inside of the house to be like, but that definitely wasn't it. The wood floors had a weird sour smell, there was a fine layer of dust over all surfaces and there was no indication of a child living in that house.
Curiously, he walked over to the piece of furniture close to the entrance, where there were several framed pictures of her children displayed. Bruno had known all of them, the eldest had been his same age and his friend up until the moment she left. The picture that called his attention the most, the most recent one, was that of a young woman who was very clearly pregnant.
"She's Juliana's," the woman talked in hoarse voice, sitting down in one of her chairs as a cloud of dust erupted from it.
"What?"
"You're wondering whose child she is," she motioned to the baby, "she's Juliana's, my youngest. You remember her?" He did, she had been born many years after her youngest, when the triplets were in their twenties. She was joyful and bubbly, the only one who had left unwed. "She left to the city following some musician," she pronounced the word like it disgusted her, "and he had her trailing behind him for years. That is until two years ago, at least, when he got her pregnant and never talked to her again."
Bruno frowned as to why was she telling him that, but still opened his mouth to ask, "where is she now?"
"Dead." The woman answered bluntly, eyeing the baby darkly. "She died giving birth and now I'm stuck taking care of her, it's really a blessing that that nephew of yours can have her so often."
The resentment on señora Ríos' demeanor filled him unease, making unconsciously tighten his hold on Carmen, who was still fast asleep. It was more than the way she talked, it was the state of the house, the neglect of the space where the baby was to grow. How could she breath under all that dust? How wasn't she cold?
The woman's face softened in regret under his stare. "I know what you're thinking, but I don't hate children and I don't hate her. I thoroughly enjoyed my daughters when I had them, but I'm old now, I'm tired and sick." She sighed. "I know she needs better, but right now ‘better’ is not available."
Bruno swallowed, looking at the baby fisting the wool of his ruana.
The whole family was setting up the table for dinner when he was back, they were immersed in loud chattery and didn't notice him come in until he cleared his throat uncomfortably.
"Oh, Bruno, we were wondering when you'd be back." Pepa said gathering the dishes before turning around and seeing him. "Weren't you taking that baby home?"
"I was," the man nodded, growing nervous under the eyes of all his family, now silent, "but there was a change of planes: I'm keeping it."
"Keeping it?" Julieta repeated in a confused voice. "A baby is not a dog, Bruno, you don't keep it."
He nodded once again. "Yeah, I know. I mean I'm..."
"Adopting her?" Isabela offered and he nodded profusely.
"Does señora Ríos' know that you're adopting her granddaughter?" Camilo asked raising an eyebrow.
"She was the one to give me this," he motioned to the bag with all of Carmen's belongings in it.
"Bruno, what's going on?" Alma asked, deeply confused.
The rat man shifted in his feet, searching for the words to explain his decision. "Señora Ríos is too tired to take care of a child, much less raise them, and I... I've always wanted one." He muttered the last part, avoiding their looks. "I never told anyone because I didn't want you to feel bad for me, but I do, you have no idea of how much I've wanted a kid." He gulped before raising his eyes to them. "I know how to take care of a baby, I babysat all of yours except for Antonio; I know how to change diapers and make bottles and cook, I can tell stories and I can read them if she doesn't like mine and I can ask you if there's something I don't know... I can love her, no one has to explain to me how to do that."
Bruno knew he didn't need exactly permission to adopt Carmen, but he did want his family's support. They all looked at him with expressions that were hard to read, except for Isabela and Luisa, who looked deeply touched by his words.
"Félix, where do we have Antonio's crib?" Pepa turned to her husband, who had to look at her for a few seconds before catching on to what was happening.
"In the closet. Do you want it to be in your room for now, bro?" When the house was rebuilt and Mirabel got her own room, they decided to build a nursery again, for the future, and it was ready to have a baby sleep in it, but Félix had been through that path three times before and he knew Bruno would want to keep her close at first.
Bruno nodded stunned. "I'll help you assemble it." Agustín said following Félix.
Both his sisters looked at him with smiles, similar to the ones they had when they saw him again for the first time after the ten years he spent living between the walls.
Alma walked up to him with a soft expression, lowering down her eyes to Carmen's face, wanting to see her closely. She was going to grow raven hair in the future and she had olive skin, she actually reminded her of Bruno when he was a baby. "This calls for a celebration."
"Really?"
"Of course," she looked at him with excitement, "we threw a party for every baby in the family to introduce them as Madrigals, we're not about to make an exception now."
And just like that, Carmen became Carmen Madrigal.
The very next day, Bruno went over to señora Ríos' house to help her clean her house, those were no conditions for a baby to live in, but they weren't good for her either. He dusted all the furniture, swept the floor, changed the curtains and scrubbed her kitchen until it was spotless. He kept going every other day for the following year, until she finally died one day on her sleep.
During those hours, Carmen was babysat by her cousins, who enjoyed every waking moment hanging out with the toddler. Camilo, who had more experience taking care of her, turned different shapes to make her laugh. Isabela made her colorful flower crowns. Mirabel embroidered her socks with figures the same colour green as her tío Bruno's ruana. Antonio showed her all the animals that inhabited his room. When it was her abuela watching her, she became the most pampered child in the world.
And that was a lot, because no one could top Bruno's pampering.
He spent every waking moment with his kid, even as she grew up. Using a long blanket, he strapped her to his chest to take her with him everywhere. As she started to grow longer hair, he learnt how to braid it and brush it, sometimes tangling Isabela's flowers in it. Whenever she sneaked into his bed at night, he limited himself to tell her to go back to her room a few times before cuddling her.
And Carmen? Carmen loved her papá more than anything in the world. He was her best friend, her confident and her playmate. She loved dressing the same colour as him, the way she saw her cousins do with their parents, so much she asked Mirabel once to knit her a ruana like Bruno's. Wherever her dad was, she wanted to be there too. Whenever he peppered her face with kisses, she peppered his back, the action becoming a war of kiss peppering that only ended when she bit his nose.
Of course, raising his own daughter was much harder than helping raise his sisters' kids. He now understood the motherly fear of everything around being a hazard and the constant self questioning of every decision he took, the palpitating terror of how his mistakes would affect her. Carmen was the brightest piece of his world and God be witness that he would steal the stars from the sky for his little girl.
But the first thing he was significantly stared at, the idea that his daughter would never truly be considered part of the family, was laid to rest pretty early on. Carmen was a Madrigal, no one would even think to question it. Her picture had been added to the mural on the town square and to the family tree on the wall of the kitchen, she walked around sure of who she was and where she belonged.
The morning of her fifth birthday, Bruno entered the nursery quietly, with a steaming tamal over a tray, next to a cup of hot chocolate, with cheese melting in the bottom. Carmen was still fast sleep on her bed, drooling over the pillow and her long black hair spread over her face. Her father decided the best way to wake her up was, of course, to tickle the palm of her foot.
"Ah!" The girl woke up with a scream when, at the lack of response at the tickling, Bruno pulled her up by her feet.
"I'm sorry, who are you? What are you doing in my daughters bed?" He asked jokingly, staring at her upside down face.
"¡Papi!" She laughed.
Bruno shook his head. "No, you are not her. You are too big to be my daughter."
"It's me! It's my birthday!" Carmen exclaimed as her dad set her back down on the bed.
"It's your birthday?!" He inquired with a shocked expression, as if he hadn't been stressing over it for the past weeks. Carmen nodded violently, jumping to wrap her arms around his neck. Bruno closed his eyes and took on the hug, like he always did whenever she hugged him. "Why are you growing up so fast?"
"Because I'm big now!"
A soft knock on the door interrupted them, making them look to where Mirabel, still in her nightdress, was standing nervously.
"It's my birthday, Mirabel!" The kid happily told her.
"I know, Carmen, happy birthday." Mirabel congratulated her with the loving smile she always gave her youngest cousin before looking back up to Bruno. "Tío, you might want to see this."
Worry started spreading over his chest as he perched his kid up in his waist and walked behind his niece to the end of the hall.
She stopped and there it was.
It took him a couple seconds to realize what he was looking at and suddenly became entrance by it, not even noticing Alma arrive at his side with a knowing expression.
There was a door, a door that hadn't been there the night before when they went to sleep, glowing with floating golden dust of magic waiting to be unleashed by Carmen. Bruno thought his daughter wouldn't get one, given that she didn't have Madrigal blood running through her veins, but there it was.
"Is that for me?" Carmen asked with an aggressive rush of energy at everyone's silence. "Does that mean I'm getting gift?"
"So it seams," Bruno responded with a fine thread for a voice.
All of them stared at the door, still in shock, for a little longer, before Mirabel clapped, snapping them out of their trance. "We have a ceremony to throw, familia! Let's go!" She ordered taking her cousin from her tío's arms and started going down the stairs. "We need decorations, and food, and... Mami! Do we still have the dress I used for my gift ceremony?!"
Bruno simply couldn't take his eyes of the door, of the recognition of his daughter as a Madrigal in all the meaning of the word, even as his eyes started to water up. His mother gave him a sweet kiss on his cheek, before grabbing his hand and guiding him back to the room for Carmen's breakfast.
