The Goings On

It just occurred to me that Delainey has never seen snow. 

The year she was born there was not an inch to be found anywhere in Eastern Washington. It was kind of a blessing, honestly, because I was toting three kids around by myself and having to do it in a foot of snow would have been miserable. The year we moved we ended up leaving about a week before the snow fell and we never ran into any fresh stuff on the drive east. I think one mountain range had a little of the frozen mounds here and there, but nothing you could really touch or play with. Now we are just far enough south that the minuscule amounts of snow that might fall in Atlanta have  no chance of reaching us here. 

It’s ironic because I was mystified that a friend of mine (a grown woman) had never seen snow either. But to be fair, she grew up in Texas, then lived in Hawaii, and now Georgia...so my poor friend never had a chance! And now i’ve got a kid who has never had the pleasure of making a snow angel or whitewashing someone and it’s practically criminal! 

February in Georgia might be my favorite month. It’s a little bipolar, but I’m ok with that. Monday was gorgeous! The sun was shining, the breeze was gentle, and one could shamelessly wear flip-flops and not suffer for it. Matthew’s birthday is coming up and it’s supposed to be around 70 degrees. It’s ok. I will be jealous of the multiple feet of snow in Washington, and everyone can be jealous that I’m starting to tan in February. 

Lainey decided to potty train last week just out of the blue. She has done really well. We tried before but she really dug her heels in about it. Daniel pointed out that this is the longest that I haven’t been pregnant since we got married (seven years this July). We are done with the pacifiers, bottles, and crib. No more booster seat or high chair at the table. No railing on her bed. No stroller. No real need to drag a diaper bag everywhere we go. She doesn’t want to ride in the buggy at the store anymore and she does really well walking. We sorta skipped the toddler stage and went straight to being a little person. They all sleep through the night these days and for the first time in years I am waking up feeling rested. I forgot what that was like! Haha!

As I mentioned before, Matthew’s birthday is coming up and he has his heart set on a “Mario” birthday party. We have been googling and pintresting our brains out trying to come up with a cute way to do a “Mario” party. He wanted to make his own invitations so we made invitations that looked like Power-Up Stars! He was very hands-on in their creation and looks like he wants to be hands-on throughout the whole thing. It’s so amazing to see him grow. Making up games and using technology and reading and writing and creating...it’s a sobering moment as a parent, I think, because while Daniel and I obviously had a part in his creation, the fact that he grew from two microscopic things into this active and imaginative being who posses his own thoughts, feelings, and insights is astounding to me. This is a person who can read and write and build all manner of aircraft out of legos: who likes to watch Troll Hunters and eat mac&cheese and helps Lainey put on her shoes...and who has the most adorable crush on a girl in his class named Hayley (he thinks she has the most beautiful hair)...this person is amazing. A true miracle. And it blows my mind that I have two others who started from the same parts and have grown to be vivacious little girls! 

Happy (almost) 6th Birthday to Matthew!!!!!
