They hadn't even been dating yet when Reggie asked her what her favourite flowers were. They'd been lounging on the beach together, drying off and watching as Luke, Alex, and Willie trying to jump over waves only to be flattened by them instead, while Flynn laughed and mocked them, before being washed away by one as well.

"I mean, I know dahlias are important to you 'cause they were your mom's favourite," he said, earnest and sweet. "But are they yours too?"

She'd never really thought of it, before then. Dahlias were what her dad always got her mom to surprise her. They were a symbol of love, of wanting to cheer someone up, of brightening someone's day. But these days, they always had a little bittersweet pang of grief to them as well.

When she thought about love, about being cheered up, about someone brightening her day, she thought of Reggie. His sunshine smile, his laugh, his goofy jokes. His big earnest eyes, which were still looking at her, expectantly.

"Sunflowers," she blurted out. "My favourite flowers are sunflowers."

When he picked her up for their first date several months later, he gave her a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers. And for every anniversary, birthday, promotion, Mother's Day, cheer up, or Just Because, for many, many years to come. She wasn't sure if he ever figured out why her favourite flowers were sunflowers, but every time she saw his smile, she knew she'd chosen right.

When Julie sang, she glowed. Like an angel, like a sunrise after a dark cold night. When she smiled, it was like the whole world lit up bright and beautiful, and when she laughed, it sounded like a melody.

He liked to watch her from the corner of his eyes as she doodled on her knee through the rip in her jeans, as she tinkered on the piano. Liked to watch her on stage, basking in the glow of her attention when she turned to him.

And okay, maybe it took him a while to get up the courage to ask her out. Maybe he waited for the perfect moment too many times, only to lose his nerve at the last second. Maybe he ended up blurting it out one day in the studio, when she came in in her oversized yellow smiley sweater, her hair a mess and her glasses on. Because she was always perfect, always beautiful to him.

When she smiled and held Reggie’s hand, giving her answer, he glowed too.
