I see a lot of analysis about Riku but I think the thing that's kinda missing in discussions about him (and by extension, his relationship with Iori and Tenn) is his disability. His respiratory disorder may be undescribed and is shown to be improving but it still makes him a disabled person canonically and I think that slightly adds a bit more to the analysis of him as a character. As an example, I see a lot of people talk about the difference between him and Tenn with Riku as somebody that only takes while Tenn as somebody that only gives. There's a scene that really exemplifies Tenn's act of only giving and that was when he was telling Riku to quit due to getting sick from all the stress of being an idol. This makes sense to Tenn because that was how he showed support to Riku when they were kids, Tenn is very cold here but, in my opinion, he's essentially saying, "Stop hurting yourself, I'll do all the hard idol work, you should just quit and be happy with your friends." Here he thinks he's giving Riku a chance to be happy in a way that won't hurt him. Already this is not the best thing to say to somebody whose just trying to pursue their dream but with Riku's disability in mind there's another layer to it. I don't know how else to say this without sounding like I hate Tenn so bare with me, Tenn is basically telling Riku he can't be an idol because he's disabled. I was always bothered by this scene and I couldn't put my finger on it until I realised that Tenn is being accidentally subtly ableist here. This is simply not how you show support to a person with a disability, it's just kinda patronising to tell a disabled person that their disability is going to kill them. Telling a disabled person who is trying to chase a dream to simply stop because of a hurdle caused by their disability is not really support even if it makes sense to Tenn because of just who he is as a person and his past with Riku. When the I7 members and the manager changed centers to help Riku out, make sure to keep the place as clean as possible to not trigger his disorder or offer him warm tea/drinks to make sure he can perform the best he can, that is actual support. They're actually being accommodating to Riku's disability instead of making him not do anything at all.

I say all this not to say that Riku's entire character is his disability, but I hope I've shown how acknowledging it adds more to the discussion surrounding him and his relationships and just makes everything more interesting!

Like we don't have cats, no money, no target-language fluency, no specialized job skills, husband is actively transitioning, I'm queer and chronically ill, Mom herself can't work, and all of our lives and family really are. Here. In this stupid state.

Husband and I are legally married and on paper it's a glaring female-female marriage. I'm sure we're already on SOME KIND OF LIST. I'm not quiet at work when chatting about how much I detest the current administration. I work retail, I have a chronically ill parent I care for when not at work, of COURSE I would be the sort of person to go to protests, I'm sure we're already on SOME KIND OF LIST.

I celebrated, some time ago, getting to and living past 18 because for a very long time I was certain I wouldn't. And I worked very hard to grow and continue to live through my 20s, loving my friends and family and finding new things to discover and continue to stick around for, expecting my 30s to also be joyful and mundane. Now, I'm about to turn 29, but I feel the worry in the pit of my stomach that I won't make it to 35, and not by my own choice.

And the worst thing is, I don't want to leave. Not just because it's familiar and it's where I've grown up and lived my whole life, but actually, yeah, that's why. This is where I fucking live. I want it to be better. I want it to get better. Things don't get better by doing nothing or running away, and it's not like I can leave anyway.

So it drives me a little nuts at times. Yknow. When Mom talks like it wouldn't be so difficult to leave Texas.

do u think illumi is bad at cooking ? i have a feeling he would be but im not fully convinced , what are ur thoughts ?

I think that hc is based off of the fact that Illumi as a Zoldyck probably 100% had professional chefs prepare him all 3 meals everyday. And while I definitely agree with that, I also think there is no way the Zoldycks have not taught Illumi survivability skills that included the basics of cooking or making your own food with what you're provided (like chucking em in the zoldyck forest and they just gotta find their own food from there for a month)

How I see it, from the logical pov he doesn't necessarily cook. He knows the basics, but thats about it. BUT if he were given a recipe book, he can replicate the meal down to a T. He can definitely cook textbook perfect recipes if he wanted to.

Whether that counts to "bad at cooking" or not is up to u tbh but im also one of those people that find it very funny if he would just ruin the entire kitchen on one saturday night because he lacked the knowledge of fundamentals like not leaving oil for too long on the stove or having to be careful of cleaning meat to not spread salmonella all over your kitchen. you learn through practice after all and when it comes to standing in an actual kitchen i think he had about none

my general hc for illumi cook is he learned a lot through watching hisoka cook first and foremost and was supervised by hisoka the first few times before he was trusted enough to be set free in the kitchen. I see hisoka having a whole written textbook of recipes he saw and likes to make and illumi uses that as his guide to making whatever he needs in there.

there are still ways for him to mess up even with all these pillars of support but imo that doesnt make him a bad cook yknow? It's like that one meme abt someone asking u to heat up a cup of water and u send them back a photo of a glass cup on the stove. He would just take things too literally but hes a fast learner so im sure after a good year of living with back and forth practice he'd become perfect at proper safe cooking.

TLDR he cooks just not safely and needs very clear proper instructions and guidance and proper practice to truly thrive but that does not make him a bad cook by definition. does that make sense.

things I wish I could relive for the first time again:

that magical window where you finish a new piece of media, having watched/read it all by yourself with no fandom contact whatsoever, and you are just so happy about it, and full of interesting theories and takeaways, and just in love with it as a gorgeous piece of art.

because I swear to god as soon as you join the fandom for anything, you're bombarded with how you're supposed to view characters and their arcs, how you're supposed to morally and ethically judge the plot and the ways it apparently failed to present the right message, and if you don't you'll either be shunned for not sharing the popular headcanons or you'll be harassed for not criticizing the source material enough.

like how is it that the fans of a piece of media are also the ones being the most negative about it? If I like a show or a movie or a book, well, I liked it. That's kind of the point. I'm actually not here to tear it apart and talk about how it didn't live up to standards other people had! I enjoyed it for what it was, and forcing myself to find negative things to say about it doesn't actually bring me more enjoyment of it or reap any benefit to me. Fandom's a double-edged sword; you want to join a community to share your love for a piece of art, and the price you pay for a modicum of joy is a mountain of negativity. that's one main reason that I never engage with fandom until I'm completely done with a show, because if I was plugged into all of that commentary and discourse during the process, I'd be completely colored by how I'm expected to interpret everything this piece of art is presenting to me without being able to even form my own opinions.
