Part 2 to yesterday’s post on my acquisition of a beautiful old replica of the famous #sculpture of #Queen #Nefertiti & her being a source of inspiration. Multidisciplinary artist @AwolErizku is one of the more recent artists to use her in his work image 1-7. First is “Nefertiti - Miles Davis', 2017, Hard coated foam & mirror tile. #AwolErizku is an #Americanartist of #Ethiopian origins. Stressed by the lack of representation for people of color in #arthistory, museums & galleries, Erizku aims to rectify this omission in his #art which is centered upon subjects of color. In his words, “There are not that many colored people in the galleries that I went to [growing up] or the museums that I went to. I was just like, when I become an artist I have to put my two cents in this world.” He does this in a critically acclaimed series of photographic portraits, re-crafting famous painted portraits by artists like Vermeer & Caravaggio by replacing their white subjects with contemporary black ones. By re-staging these and other iconic works of art, Erizku engages in critical discourse with the past, cracking open the canon with historically repressed voices. Erizku's work asks questions about race within the context of art history. He is centrally concerned with #blackness & how #blackartists are viewed & canonized. • Image 8-10 in 2012 Düsseldorf-based artist #HansPeterFeldmann created his ”improved“ version of the bust of Queen #Nofretete (Nefertiti) on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the excavation of the bust in ancient Egypt. In this work from Feldmanns “Antikenserie” (antique series), the 1941-born deals with the story of the bust from an archaeological find to the frequently marketed ideal of timeless #beauty.
