teeth - from 'River Roads', original
The space under the tree was broader than the hall of mirrors at the Ironwood Hotel, and it had the hushed, echoing quality of church. The bloody fringes of the tree’s aerial roots hung like buttresses and arches, and between them, its branches were bound with strips of finger-weaving. The oldest bindings were frayed, greying things, and where the tree had grown around them the branches were puckered like scars.
Finger-weaving was an old craft, less common now that factory linen and Khasanian cotton were so cheap. Robin had never had the patience for finger-weaving, but Sedge had always enjoyed the steady rhythm, the way each twist of thread built upon the last. As a child she had learned dozens of patterns, dragon’s teeth, star-seeds, the home fires and more; and when her blood came Granny Iris and Ouzel had begun to teach her the Grey River patterns, which were only woven by women of that kin.
The bands wound around the tree were odd. The familiar patterns were there, but they had jagged edges where the patterns no longer held, twisted into something less geometric and more…alive. Sedge leaned closer. Here were the home fires, but as they burned the rising smoke and falling ash curved and spread into an open ribcage. Here the net of flowers, but as she followed the pattern the net gaped and twisted into open mouths, singing. No. Screaming.
agitate - from FMA histories fic, working title 'The Unmasterable Past'
The disaffection in Ishval, to which reference was made in our columns some time ago, has reached its climax. About the fifth of August, a faction of some two hundred Ishvalan Home Rule agitators stormed the District Court buildings in Hansa intending to slaughter the men they found inside.
As the attackers were bravely seen off with grapeshot and cartridge, some dozen or so died. We now hear that in revenge the insurgents have slaughtered the garrison of Hansa, murdered and disgraced innocent soldiers’ wives and fired the city. ‘On all sides,’ our correspondent wrote, ‘great pinnacles of weaving fire shot up to heaven. The pillars of smoke rose sullenly into the sultry summer evening, and the roar of the conflagration mingled in the street with the shouts and riot of the insurgents. A great many Ishvalan homes and businesses burned. It is a sickness of the mind to destroy one’s brother’s home with one’s enemies, but the hot-heads are implacable and their hatred for lawful Ishvalans is as strong as their discontent with Amestrian authority.’
It is a disgraceful business, the result, no doubt, of Aerugan influence within the irreconcilable section of Ishvalan Home Rule agitators. In 1857 the mutiny in Pendleton Narrows was met promptly and decisively with grapeshot and canister fire, and crushed. In 1901 insurrection was met with delay, vacillation and insufficient punishment, and the consequence is that the mutiny has spread across all Ishval. The Government admittedly has a difficult and delicate position to face, but it is clear they cannot give in to the insurgents. The traitors must be made an example of and insurrection punished.
‘The Hansa Insurrection,’ Dublith Guardian, 3 September 1901

Mustang’s parents died when he was young and he was raised by his paternal aunt. Chris Mustang, known as ‘Madame Christmas’, was the owner and operator of the Christmas bar in downtown Central, an institution that, although not precisely a brothel, was known to facilitate so-called ‘gentlemen’s arrangements’. Chris Mustang was publican, patron and enforcer of the establishment. She had a well-earned reputation and an information broker - she had begun by accumulating information as insurance against the mistreatment of her ‘girls’, and against military or police interference into her business. Although disdaining blackmail and extortion as wasteful, by 1900 she was able to exert subtle influence on high-ranking military and civilian officials.
There is evidence to suggest that Mustang’s placement as a student of Berthold Hawkeye and later as the protégé of General Grumman were the result of Madam Christmas’s connections. Mustang also made use of his foster mother’s information network, setting her on the track of information he dared not pursue through official channels. However, Mustang’s ambition caused him to downplay his background. He seldom spoke of his family publicly, no doubt wishing to avoid the accusation that his unusually fast progression through the ranks was the result of, as one wag put it, his foster mother’s grip on High Command’s collective balls.
Friedmann. Mustang. Vol.2 1910-1937: The Hero of Ishval (Barnhelm Books, 1995)
gold - upcoming chapter of old timber to new fires, ASOIAF
In torchlight the blood had been black, but the rising sun revealed it deep red against the snow. Sansa breathed out softly, trying to still the tremors in her belly. Her father’s legs had spasmed just so, when Ser Ilyn cut off his head in King’s Landing. Her father’s head had fallen just so, rolling down from the High Septon’s pulpit, down the steps of the Great Sept of Baelor to the cobbled square below. The crowd had roared, screamed and surged. A man had lunged for her father’s head, raising it by the hair, then dropped it, doubling over, when one of the goldcloaks put a mailed fist into the man’s belly.
This was not the sodden heat of summer in King’s Landing. The air was hard and cold, the blood already frozen. The crowd in Winterfell’s court murmured, their voices low. She could not tell if it was approval or censure. Blood dripped from the dark metal in Jon’s hand. His face very still. So he had looked when she had found him at the wall, distant as the Stranger.

Mother’s letters from the war years are written on good stationary, worn, stained, folded and refolded. Father’s are written on a mismatch of sheets. At times, when he could not find paper, his words were written on the back and margins of mother’s letters, or crossing the lines of her words so that their words mingled and overlapped. At other points, he wrote to her on the backs of pages torn from books: A lithographic print of an Ishvalan temple, a handful of anatomical drawings from a medical text, the title page of a collection of Cretan poetry. As an officer, he had a partial dispensation from the official censor, and as the war progressed he made increasing use of it. His words never quite reached a pitch that might be interpreted as treasonous, but his unease grew increasingly apparent.
12 March 1908. Your letters are a solace and a comfort to me, my dear. I carry them in my front pocket and read them daily. Roy teases me for it, but I know that he is only jealous, for he has no sweetheart at home to write to. I have met him here in Kanda, for the military alchemists have been sent to the frontline en masse for the first time in our history. It is a frightening thing to see them at work, for they are as terrible as massed artillery and far more mobile. Living weapons, they are called, and I cannot disagree... ‘My Father’s War,’ Elycia Hughes, My Father's War and Other Essays. (Central: Stodhardt Publishing, 1953)

Swakopmund is a beach resort and an example of German colonial architecture. It was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa. German influences remained evident, including German street names, a German daily newspaper, and the German language being spoken by residents, prompting The New York Times to describe it as "more German than Germany". A 2008 New York Times article describes the town as having "the dislocating feel of a Baltic Sea resort set in the tropics." Prominent colonial-time vintage buildings in Swakopmund include the Altes Gefängnis, a prison designed by Heinrich Bause in 1909. The Woermann Haus, built in 1906 with a prominent tower (Damara tower), is now a public library, Kaserne, Prinzessin Rupprecht Residenz - now a small B&B establishment, Hohenzollern House, Swakopmund Hotel (1900s-built railway station), 1905 Hansa Hotel, 1899 Fachwerk Biergarten, Villa Wille, German school, Otavi Bahnhof building, a Lutheran Church and many other fine buildings.
--------------------

Rules: post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Send an ask with the title that most intrigues you and interests you and I’ll post a little snippet of it or tell you something about it!
Tagging: @oddeyesight @valorousowl @7yd1a @tmae3114 @mismagireve
Haven't seen this in a while so I'm bringing it back, especially since some things have been added/removed since the last time I was working on my WIPs. This time all the titles are taken directly from my trello list, so they're a little more descriptive than usual, but I italicized the actual titles to make them easier to find.

Just Another Class Trip :) Part 4
Marinette has a nice peaceful night, besides from having to outrun Batman, but come on thats just normal field trip stuff, and after that absolutely nothing remarkable happens.
First< Previous >Next
-------------
“It wasn't just me right?” Marinette asks her Kwamis, “Aunt Selina was acting really strange,”
“She dragged you through secret tunnels in one of the most prevalent companies in the world,” Kaalki deadpans, as she hangs something up in the wardrobe, “Everything was strange,”
“Yeah, I’m not really one to judge,” Marinette says, to the god that can fit in her pocket, “Done,”
She straightens out the portable house she had made for Tikki and Kaalki. It was made out of fabric with just a few pieces of cardboard for better support. It had bedrooms, living rooms, even a little kitchen. It was quite like the ‘doll house’ she has for them back home. She had made a replica of that one for Tikki to bring into the miracle box as a gift for the other Kwamis.
“Oh the others would love this!” Tikki squeaks, flying around inside, Marinette can see her through the little cut out windows.
“Well I can’t hold all of you,” Marinette laughs, falling back on her bed, “I guess I should get some sleep,”
“You aren’t going out for patrol?”
“I thought that was a one time thing?”
“But you had so much fun,” Tikki looks at her with thos big round eyes, “You should go again Marinette,”
“You know Tikki I was actually about to make a responsible decision and go to bed early,” Marinette sighs, getting back up, “But you ruined it,”
“It’s midnight and we both know that you would just keep designing dresses,” Kaalki pushes away one of the many wads of paper littering her bed and room.
“Touche,” Marinette pulls over her mask, “What about the miracle box?”
“It’s your choice Marinette,” Tikki assures, her smile telling Marinette there would be no hard feelings either way.
“Well it was safe last night, Hawk Moth isn't around to try and steal it,” She puts on her cape, “And it would be pretty bad if it got damaged during a fight,”
“So you’ve made your choice?”
“Yeah,”
Starling finishes zip tying the crooks hands when she feels eyes fall to her. She doesn't directly look around, instead stretching and yawning to survey her surroundings. Above. A flash of color, yellow, Robin.
Instead of going back up to the roof as planned she turns and walks out the alley into the street. The victim of the mugging is there waiting and she smiles brightly, letting them relax. When the police arrive she slips away, having no illusions of Robin, or whoever else is watching, actually losing sight of her.
Obviously they wanted her alone for whatever reason. That just means she has to stick to populated areas. Luckily she is in a seedier part of town but not enough that people are too cautious of roaming the streets. There's a few drunk people around, she’d have to find denser crowds if she wants to give them the slip.
She sees an older woman struggling with her bags, full of fresh produce.
“Hello,” She steps out of the shadows, “Would you-whoa!”
She backs up from the gun that is pointed right at her head.
“Tell your boss to fuck off,” The woman scowls
“Sorry, but I don’t have a boss, Milady,” She smiles kindly, “But I can leave if you want, just thought I’d offer to help with the bags,”
“You a bat?” She raises and eyebrow looking over Starling.
“No Milady,” She can dodge a bullet right?
“Good guy?” The gun inches closer.
“Good enough to not get shot, I hope,” Starling smiles a crooked grin.
“Eh, you would have tried to disarm me if you were a threat,” She puts the gun into her cardigan pocket decorated with embroidered cats.
“Try?” Starling picks up the dropped bags.
“And fail,” She nods, taking the bags from her.
“I’m starting to think I need your help more than you need mine,” Starling chuckles, rubbing her neck.
“Well you can still carry all of this,” She passes the bags back.
“Is there a market at this hour or something?” Starling asks, following after her leaving enough distance.
“Well you see dear late at night is actually when it’s safest,”
“Oh I see,” Starling nods along, scanning the rooftops, “Bats,”
“And you can sell nasty looking fruit in bad lighting,” The older woman cracks a grin, Starling mirroring her.
“I guess that's true,”
“Plus also works as a front for drugs,” Starling chokes out a laugh.
“And you would know,”
“Of course, your now an accessory to crime my dear,” There's a sparkle in her eye and Starling can’t help but laugh.
“I never seem to be able to stay out of trouble,” Starling sighs dramatically, sagging to the side.
“That's because you wander Gotham's streets in a costume my dear,” She says kindly, then turns a shrewd eye to her, “Just who are you?”
“Starling, nice to meet your acquaintance,” Starling bows, easily managing even with the bags.
“You’re not from around here are you dear?” The lady raises her brow.
“Am I that obvious,” Starling chuckles, a skip in her step.
“Cheerfulness is a dead give away,” Starling nods along to the advice? “You’re either from out of town or crazy,”
“I’ll pick out of town then,” Starling tilts her head to the side, “Tho I can’t guarantee the second one,”
“Batman is not hospitable to rouges my dear,” She ignores Starlings hopefully-a-joke.
“No kidding,” Starling mutters, glancing back up to the rooftops, she was definitely still being watched.
“... Well if you wanted to help more old ladies with their groceries tonight just head back the way we came go straight and take the first right,” She stops in front of a door holding her hand out to take the bags back.
“Thank you,” Starling smiles, giving another bow, “I think I will,”
“Stay out of trouble my dear,” The woman calls as Starling heads down the street.
“Sorry!” Starling calls over her shoulder, “I’m a really bad listener! Have a good night!”
She sees the older lady shake her head before disappearing into the building. Taking her advice Starling walks towards the markets. Those watching don’t approach her on the way to the market. Either they don’t know she’s aware of them or are confident enough that they can keep track of her. She’ll have to check for bugs regardless.
She reaches the market, weaving in between people. She waits for the perfect moment where she's sure she’ll be in a blind spot. The people milling around watch her curiously and cautiously, a high chance she's a villain a higher chance she's a vigilante. This unfortunately means people give her some personal space, not ideal for hiding.
It’s when a group of tall built men walk past her she sees her opportunity. She darts behind them, none backing off from her, a brief glance or two then just ignore her, part of some gang or rather. In a fluid motion Marinette pulls off her cape and scarf with one hand, flipping the skirt inside out to hide the distinct patterning. With her other hand she brings her bun down into a ponytail, being able to just pull it out.
She must of lost them for a second so she quickly but discreetly leaves the spot, not letting them connect her build to Starling. Now that she's out of costume she is able to hide in crowds. She dips behind some people pulling on her skirt quickly and zipping it up, she then unzips the hood to make it look like a pattern against her skirt. With the scarf in place around her neck turned to the pink side and a pair of glasses, she is sure she looks to the world like a different person.
The next hurtle are the bugs. They probably can’t track her in the market if she stays close to others. There's one on her skirt, shoe, elbow, and belt. She drops them off in any crates that are full of white powder that is certainly not flower. Might as well send them after something useful.
When she’s sure that she’s untraceable she heads back to the hotel a spring in her step. She does indeed run into someone on her way home that needs help with some groceries. If Marinette does indeed notice something suspicious in their bag no one needs to see her slip in the number of some people that can help out.
“Tikki! That was so great!” “My costume worked perfectly! They didn’t even see it coming!”
“Great job Marinette!” Tikki cheers, flying out of her pockets as they enter her room.
“I wonder what they wanted,” Kaalki asks, as she settles on the bed.
“They were probably going to be like,” Marinette brings her fingers up to make 'bat ears', “Get out of the city Starling' or 'don't stand on that gargoyle its my brooding gargoyle,”
“Probably shouldn’t have wrote ‘Starling was here’ on it,” Tikki sighs, more of a piece of advice than a lecture.
“Well I wanted to write ‘dibs’ on it, sooo,” Marinette falls back on her bed, lowering her voice so Adrien sleeping next door wont wake up.
“At least you’re having fun,” Tikki giggles.
“I did, but I need a sleep in,” Marinette snuggles further into the bed.
Tikki flys off over the edge of the bed. Probably to get her little sleeping bag or something.
“Marinette!”
"What?!" She darts to Tikki's side, to see an empty backpack. An empty backpack where the Miracle box should be.
“Where's the Miracle box!”
Fuck

Hansa Hotel, dating back to 1905, forms part of Swakopmund’s architectural culture. At the beginning of the 20th century, master hairdresser Paul Miersch opened his new salon in a large building. As many of the rooms were not used, he rented them out to travelers and thus founded the Hansa Hotel in 1905.
The 4 star hotel offers 54 standard rooms, 4 suites and is popular for its fine cuisine. Especially the breakfast is versatile but the "colonial coffee" is also highly recommended.

After I had arrived in Lübeck by train I stored my luggage in a locker at the train station as I had arrived a few hours before I could check into my hotel. I guess one lesson I can already draw from this trip, is that I should not take the earliest train if that means I can’t check in for some time.
I spent a lot of the time walking around the old city center of Lübeck. The city center is mostly composed of medieval brick buildings on an island in the river Trave. Some smaller islands are on the western and southern side of the city center that used to be defensive works that were in part converted into public green space. From the hills that used to be walls you can get some nice views over the city and its large churches towering over the rest of the buildings. The city center is not very large and you can easily cross it on foot in about 15 minutes.
[view from one of the hills towards the old town; five church towers peak over the rest of the buildings]
That day and on the Monday I walked around the city a lot trying to peek into every street and I certainly can understand why this was declared cultural heritage. The large churches and other city buildings show the amount of money that flowed through the city in the days of the Hansa. When ships sailed to ports in the Baltic and the North Sea fully loaded with goods to make a fortune. The city grew rich and soon houses were crammed close to each other in narrow streets. And to cross between these streets the people built a small walkways through the buildings and backyards. Some of them seem to be still in use. I did not want to disturb people living there so all I took was a few pictures. Especially in the eastern part of the city everything is quite calm and seems to not have changed that much. Unless a large garbage truck rumbles over the cobblestone street.
[an open archway leads through a house into a backyard; the way itself is dark and only a some sunlight is shining from the other side]
But here is also where I should be a bit critical about this journey. While some parts of Lübeck are nice and quiet with its historic buildings being a wonderful sight, especially the western part of the city center is a terrible mess of car traffic. The Holstentor is a big gate marking the entrance to the center which is prominent for it having sunk in the middle under its own weight a bit. It once connected to the city wall and nowadays sits in the middle of heavy traffic. It was incredibly busy and noisy with cars all day here.
[the Holstentor on a cloudy day; the brick gate is decorated with statues and has pointy roofs]
And it is not much better for major parts of the western side of the city center. Cars are everywhere in the narrow streets. The sidewalks barely fit two people side by side and cars are parked in most streets. At times I felt less safe crossing these small streets than in bustling Berlin.
While there was some bike lanes on the periphery, in the actual city center that was mostly not the case. I also very much noticed, again to my surprise how very loud the traffic noise was. I think it is a mix of the narrow streets with high building facades (usually 2 or 3 stories with little to no gaps) which reflect the sound and an utter lack of foliage. Berlin is far from perfect, but there are trees nearly everywhere and they really help absorbing and breaking up sound from cars. Something I dearly missed in Lübeck.
[view along a narrow side street; arches have been constructed over the cobblestone street to connect the buildings on either side]
There is public transport in the form of about a dozen bus lines, but they are all routed around the Holstentor which becomes a terrible bottleneck. At least two times I saw three buses in a row sitting in dense traffic and the bus drivers became even fed up with each other with one bus driver honking at another one.
You might think that there might be some peace and quiet along the river, but unfortunately a lot of the riverside is taken up by vast parking spaces. This availability of car parking makes it very appealing to people from out of town to come with their cars, which just makes traffic a lot worse.
After a while I retreated to my hotel room to get some quiet time. Just a nice green area to relax would have been nice. But I was always close to a car parking space or a major street. The city had even built roads on the green islands that used to be part of the defensive works.
It seems that there is not much left of the medieval city that by technological necessity used to be walkable when it was built. It got taken over by cars and noise to a large degree. I am in the end kinda glad I only stayed for a short duration.
[several boats are anchored in the river Trave; houses typical for the Lübeck town center are behind them]
But the situation might improve. I saw advertisements for political campaigns to improve bike infrastructure. In the end I believe that especially an old city center like this one would immensely improve with a ban on car traffic. Of course this only means banning private car owner. Transporters, services and emergency vehicles would still operate. But those were pretty scarce, so basically nothing would be left of the terrible noise and the streets would be safe and pleasant to walk and admire this wonderful coastal town that has an interesting story to tell.
