I was going to keep tinkering with this, but then thought, why?

Random ideas often pop into my head, and last night I was thinking what to draw today. I landed on my favorite toxic trope involving Charlie and Alastor—the classic "turning a good girl bad." Think Hades and Persephone vibes, which I adore. I was exploring different art styles and thought a hannya mask tattoo would be perfect. Demon Charlie with an Alastor mask? Yes, please!

This is a drawing I want to revisit in the future for sure! Once I get better at showing emotion I would love to show conflict in Charlie’s eyes , ahh, so dark I love it! I have problems and I’m okay with it 😆

i know exactly what appeals to me; it's the fancy tux/suit and the mysterious aura from the mask. wow ... idk its such a drastic shift from his usual silliness ... like wow ... hey. hi. hey. are you free this weekend? do you need anything from me?

I wrote quite a bit so... putting it under a cut LOL.

LISTEN Yuri is very queer imo and I love it. One of my favorite things about him is that he uses male pronouns and a male manner of speaking, but physically and personality wise, a lot of aspects about him are feminine and he's a lot more lowkey masculine compared to other males in his game. Most of his official artwork, especially for gachas (Asteria in particular), lean toward standard feminine posing or hairstyles. I love that he encompasses feminine and masculine traits and isn't purely one or the other. I could just as easily say he's one of the guys as I could say he's one of the girls (don't even get me started on ideas I've had of him in Rays with all the other girls). He's just... Yuri.

(For physically feminine things, I consider the way he sleeps to be kinda feminine, and a good chunk of his official artwork is rather feminine as I've mentioned. The positioning of his hands/fingers and sometimes legs (both in game and in official artwork) is also comparatively feminine to the other men, and when compared to the women. Basically just like, you know how there are ways guys are often drawn, but with girls, they usually have their fingers together and they're like... positioned in less masculine ways? Same with legs and general posing? It's hard for me to explain without pulling up image examples to specify on the dot, but a lot of Yuri's official artwork is either in the middle or leaning feminine. And sometimes it's not! He's not ever very masculine, but he's not always feminine, either. For me he feels more centered, leaning feminine. Also, his character design notes mention they purposely made him slender.)

I'd love to hear your thoughts on his outfits, because while I see some of them as a little more on the feminine side, I see most of them as more neutral. For me it's largely his hairstyles and the framing of his hair with his face.

Also, there's even that Asteria alt outfit he has that I know you like with the mask, which is actually a hannya mask. There are a few very minorly different but similar ways I've seen it described overall as far as the lore behind it (likely because there are white, red and deep red versions, and some seem to describe them as used for "elegant" women while others don't use that exact term. Little stuff like that), but it basically boils down to a female demon who has become possessed because of her obsession or jealousy. It also represents being sorrowful and tormented, as well as demonic and dangerous (meant to represent complex emotions). Yuri's is a red mask, so it references being less refined (the darker red is true demons, while white is for a refined character). Which, I'd agree, yeah, Yuri's not very refined LOL! But the general idea of it is a jealous woman with demon lore (and he does have that demon outfit in Vesperia for that play, so both of those reference Yuri in a demon role, though the hannya mask is a female thing), and... idk, I didn't make the artwork, but I do know they made the conscious decision to include that in making an alt for Yuri lol.

That's not to say I know for definite that Bamco is trying to say he's feminine and queer (and god knows most official non-indie companies are too afraid to admit it even if they did), but they do draw him in standard female posing a lot (I'd even argue his second TF24 and his Dress Up Collection poses are the "go to female poses". My tier list doesn't have Yuri's legs on the TF24 one, but the hair, legs and fingers definitely give me that vibe). Like, I get it, it's Bamco; they're probably never going to purposely create or admit to purposely creating a male character who is intentionally feminine and overall queer. I would like to be proven wrong someday but they've had ample time to do that and have yet to lol.

But generally speaking? When I look at all other Tales men? Yuri is pointedly more "girly" overall, and they're aware enough of it to make jokes like "princess Yuri", and putting Yuri in a dress in a drama CD and having him play a female role in a play while having the whole audience being enamored by him (and Flynn finding him in the dress and Yuri hiding his face from Flynn and fleeing at the first opportunity lol). Like, they're ABSOLUTELY AWARE of it enough to make "he's girly looking" jokes.

Also like, this one's just a thing I think of, but isn't shopping a lot/loving to spend money/wanting to go on shopping sprees all at once... generally seen as more of a girl thing? Because... LOL. Yuri loves blowing money all at once because it feels good, and at least where I'm from, that's largely seen as a female quality. It's also very fun to have that as a quality for him, having grown up poor... so when he gets a bunch of money and has a ton piled up, he wants to spend it (insert Jareth wow they're brothers after all comment here).

There's even the fact that he's got like... feminine old-fashioned gender role qualities, like being really good with kids and knowing how to handle them, and being a really good cook. Like, idk, was it an accident that they made him look feminine and then gave him a bunch of feminine qualities, too? Idk, but they sure as hell 100% know he's easy to make look feminine (another example too, his eyelids/eyelashes on his model are... very pronounced, which is not usually done with men. Also, his eyelashes are very noticeable in his laughing skit portait, which was released in hella HD recently in the Fave Face voting. None of the guys/only the girls have those "feminine style" eyelashes).

I like to poke at his child and teen self as well, because he's extremely feminine as a teen imo (his official concept art even has him wearing a more, I'd say feminine-leaning, bracelet). I do have a joke though about his whooshy girly turn around when talking to Hanks in the manga as child femboy supreme. Born to be a femboy, not forced to be anything and became a femboy.

There's also the fact that in the novel in the childhood portion, Flynn realizes it's entirely possible that the reason he's growing his hair out to be long (implying it's not what is basically "boy length"), is because he's trying to emulate his mother. Basically implying he's trying to emulate a feminine appearance on purpose because he was told his mother had long hair. And like, idk man, but one of the game writers did write that novel. So to me it's just like... yet another example where it seems to be a lot of stuff that makes me believe it's not an accident.

But I do love that he's not completely feminine and he's got boyish qualities mixed into that. He's just very non-stereotype conforming as a character, both in personality/traits and in appearance. Like... there are times I can look at him and be like... lol you're such a boy.

teehee little shit yuri changed my life and i still can't believe we got that. also, yuri didn't just take a paper from him, but he even pulled flynn's nametag over to himself, in the other artwork of them in these outfits, and crossed out flynn's role on his nametag and listed flynn as being in the same team as him LOL. flynn's nametag with the cross out and yuri writing his own team name on flynn's tag was also sold as official merch LOL.

You like Togashi? I haven't seen much for NWO characters outside of Kandori, even less than my personal underrated children the Masked Circle (yes that includes Hannya, Hiroki and Yasou) Hiroki is probably my favorite character so I can't judge, put I'm pretty interested in why you like him.

Yes!! Togashi, my beloved/beloathed. I'm so cursed to love the obscure characters that don't even have their own page on the MegaTen wiki...

Anyway, hoo boy. Where to start with Togashi.

I really like that Togashi didn't have any intention of avoiding this topic with him. Katsuya has been on the force for quite some time; Togashi absolutely could have left the police whenever to avoid this conversation, but for some reason, he's stuck around.

Still, I can't praise him too much for his honesty and not running away because he only admitted to this after Shimazu dropped the bomb to Katsuya.

Togashi has been a part of this scheme and in Tatsuzou's pocket for years but only came forward once the world is in danger of being destroyed. It makes you wonder how much guilt he truly did feel over the incident with Katsuya's father. Well, I guess the thing that matters most in the end is that he does own up to what he did.

He tries to play the same game that Tatsuzou does, but fails miserably.

Poor guy. He actually tries to do something right for once and the world swatted him down like a fly. It's this attempt to do the right thing that causes a brief moment of utter hypocrisy that we see mere seconds later.

Like. Dude. You seriously cannot be lecturing Shimazu about being a corrupt officer. Cool that you tried to do the right thing, but that doesn't take away from the fact that you actively destroyed the Suou family and was complicit in Tatsuzou's delusional whatevers for years.

Anyway, Togashi doesn't get much screentime, but from what we do see, this man is a selfish, walking contradiction. He has no intention of running away from what he did to Katsuya's father, but also no intention of stepping up to it either. He berates Shimazu for being corrupt when he's been in that boat for just as long. Just because Togashi doesn't embrace it like Shimazu does, doesn't make it any better. He's presumably lived fairly comfortably in Tatsuzou's pocket until his own life is threatened, at which point he jumps ship in the name of self-preservation. I do think that he genuinely regrets what he's done, but even in his apology and his methods of atonement, we can still clearly see the selfish streaks that have defined him and his behaviors for a long, long time now.

“This Hydra facility showed to be more blistering and tortuous than the last, only having a handful of survivors left! Look! There’s one! It’s a girl! It’s a girl! She’s smiling! She’s smiling! That’s clearly a smile!”

Bucky watches the frantic news reporter yell over your rescue and feels the hair on the back of his neck raise as he watches a wide grin stretch across your face. The video is shaky and chaotic but he can clearly make out the ragged and ripped up tactical gear on your body, large stars on the sleeves and the infamous skull and tentacles on the chest. Your body is drenched in blood and there’s even blood in the cracks of your teeth of your smile.

“They tried to find her family or at least someone who knows her, but nothing came of it. Once she was cleared from a hospital they advised intense therapy and later sent her off to a psychiatric ward. She killed three people there before they relocated her to a more military grade psych ward. She then killed a guard which put her on death row.” Sharon explains to Bucky once he pauses the video.

She has F.R.I.D.A.Y display multiple images as she speaks; holograms of you once you were cleaned up the hospital, pictures of your victims, crime scene photos, and more.

“What makes you think she knows anything about where these missing kids are? Besides the fact that she used to be Hydra?” Bucky asks.

“About a year ago there was another missing child case that the FBI was handling; a detective had a similar idea when they connected the dots to Hydra and they contacted her. She claimed that she could feel the child’s pain and then described the surroundings of where the child was later found in full detail. Some said it was luck, others said she was somehow connected with somebody on the outside, others said she was psychic and could truly see and feel these things.” Sharon finishes that last part with a small smirk on her face. Bucky sees Sam roll his eyes in his peripheries.

“I mean, after all the shit we’ve seen, I’m not surprised…” Bucky trails off as he glances back down at the laptop in front of him, the screen paused on your face; your creepy smile disturbing him and making him feel uneasy.

“I set up a time to talk to her tomorrow morning. The ward warned us that… she’s not exactly stable. They said not to expect much.” Sam clarifies and Bucky assumes he’s going through with this because it was Sharon’s idea. 

“Tell me about the missing teenagers.” 

“James Summers and Elizabeth Hawley - both 19, both students at Columbia University, both studying biophysics with concentrations in genetics. Summers is leaning towards molecular enhancements while Hawley’s leaning towards changes in future evolution. Sound familiar?” Sharon teases. 

“Hydra’s favorite meal. What did the FBI figure out before handing it over to us?” 

“They made a connection to another couple of students kidnapped a year ago, to the day. They were found murdered about 8 days after their abduction; except this happened at Duke University.” Sam interrupts.

“...So five days? That’s a grim deadline.” Bucky’s brow twitches at the thought of these kids being killed for their knowledge.

Sharon and Sam don’t audibly answer but Bucky’s throat goes dry as he understands their silence.

“Let’s deal, shall we?”

Bucky, Sam, and Sharon sit across from you in the interrogation room of the psych ward. Your wrists are cuffed, but not to the table, and your ankles are shackled; the metal clanking against the metal chair you sit in every couple of minutes. Your orange jumpsuit is bright against your otherwise depressed skin; it’s obvious it’s been awhile since it’s gotten any care. 

Bucky notes that you’re a small little thing. Short, strong build but definitely not big enough to take down anyone too much larger than you. The only other color on your body besides your jumpsuit is a baby blue string bracelet on your left wrist and a small tattoo on your neck; a Japanese style Hannya mask with bright red skin and teal eyes. Your fingers are skinny as they twitch against each other and Bucky can only imagine when it was the last time you had a fulfilling meal. He wonders how much he really has in common with you.

“My life… for the kids.” You smile brightly. Although your features are exaggerated as you speak, Bucky can hardly see any emotion in your face; you feel absolutely nothing.

“You’re gonna have to do a little more for me first.” Sam says as he stands, taking a small clear bag out of the backpack Sharon brought. Inside the bag sits a small square of blue fabric.

Bucky glances at Sharon for clarification but she stares straight ahead at you. I’m sure Bird Brain has a reason.

Sam removes the fabric from the bag and places it in your hands. You immediately grip it tightly and close your eyes.

The longer you hold onto the fabric, the tighter your grip is and the more laboured your breathing becomes. Suddenly you gasp loudly and  Bucky flinches a bit.

“Pain! I feel pain… It’s dark. Dark and cold, so cold,” Your eyes open wide and Bucky can see tears forming in the corners of your eyes. Your knuckles are turning white from how hard you’re holding onto the fabric.

“The-the boy. His-his hands are- they’re tied with twine… packing twine. A-and a hanger. They whip him with a coat hanger. A wire coat hanger... “ You trail off as tears begin to fall down your cheeks and your hands begin to shake. 

“A cellar… Warehouse, condemned. An angel of stone. Waterfall. W-water falling. N-not water. They’re there.” You gasp.

Bucky scribbles down what you’re saying just in case, but he feels Sam’s annoyance from where he’s sitting and assumes they won’t be coming back here.

Bucky knows Hydra experimented, but people who can see things like this? From touching fabric? It unlikely; Hydra wanted soldiers, not mind readers. Perhaps the other case she helped solve was pure luck.

“Oh, God… oh, God…” You mumble as Sam finally approaches you and crouches down to meet your eyes. 

He plucks the fabric from your fingers roughly, “I tore this off the back of my New York Knicks T-shirt.” He whispers, “It has nothing to do with the crime.”

Sam stands as a buzzer is sounded, signaling the unlocking of the door and he walks out as Sharon follows. Bucky stands and gathers his notebook and slides the cap on his pen, putting both in Sharon’s backpack and heads towards the open door. 

“Heaven, I’m in heaven… And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak…” 

Bucky freezes at the doorway as he hears your voice singing softly. 

“And I seem to find the happiness that I seek… When we’re out together, dancing cheek to cheek…” You trail off.

Bucky slowly turns around to face you and sees Steve sitting in your spot smiling at him and he quickly shuts his eyes. One… Two… Three… Bucky counts in his head before slowly opening his eyes to see you staring at him, small innocent smile on your face, eyes staring at him with almost a hint of love and adoration.

“I’m with you ‘til the end of the line, pal.” You speak to him, voice soft and inviting. Bucky’s breath catches in his throat and he feels like he’s about to throw up. He quickly turns and catches up with his partners, accidentally brushing past Sharon with a bit of force.

“You okay, Bucky? Did she say something to you?” Sharon asks, resting a gentle hand on his upper arm.

“Uh, n-no. She didn’t. I just, uh, I gotta get home.” Bucky spits out. 

Sam and Sharon don’t question it.

Theory on Nagoriyuki’s Theme and Backstory.

So, in my previous posts, somebody managed to put out the lyrics of What Do You Fight For-Nagoriyuki’s Theme. 

Reminder, I may or may not be right with my theory. This is just speculation and my interpretation.

LYRICS:

It is becoming one of my favorite songs to be honest. The music and its tone obviously is heavy metal, but there is a sense of calmness and self-control. Although, the lyrics are pretty hammy and full of burning passion. 

It can be safe to believe that Nagoriyuki is a calm and collected person. There is a possibility that he is disciplined and passionate about his fighting skills. According to his biography, the man values Bushido (Samurai Code). Bushido Code of the samurai has principles that emphasizes courage, honor, and loyalty to their master, the daimyo. 

The principles clearly almost coincide to the lyrics to a certain extent. The most important part of the lyrics that stood out is that the beginning of the song quotes that everything in this world leads to soul enlightenment.

Soul Enlightenment’s definition varies, but what is it like when a person is spiritually enlightened? The qualities of that is that the enlightened person is a being of pure love and light, kind and compassionate. However, those qualities aren’t enough to truly define you as ‘enlightened’. 

You must purify your soul, heart, mind, and body. The back of Nagoriyuki’s kimono and the kanji written on his mask was written as ‘Heart’ and ‘Mind’, if I am correct. That matches the attributes of what one needs for spiritual enlightenment. 

Even so, the lyrics quoted: ‘You’re denying your thirst. Now it’s time to feast!’

This could refer to Nagoriyuki’s internal struggles on resisting his vampiric urges. As stated before, it’s speculated that his hannya youkai mask is special limiter that helps suppress his impulses. So Nagoriyuki might be struggling to control his vampire side and he could be using the culture and traditions of Bushido to obtain spiritual enlightenment to maintain self-control. Not only is he trying to maintain himself, but he is obviously very determined to keep fighting. Keep fighting until it is his time to die. He might have a mindset of a warrior, someone who isn’t afraid of death, even though he is an ‘immortal’, a vampire. 

Onto his backstory, there is no information on Nagoroyuki’s past. He is simply called a mysterious swordsman that wields a sword that absorbs blood, but Daisuke claimed that he plays an important role to the history of Guilty Gear. 

If this is true, it is safe to assume that he’s seen a lot of pretty crazy events that transpired throughout the lore’s timeline. He certainly gives off the impression of an experienced warrior and a man with a story to tell. 

I believe his situation is no different from Sol Badguy. Sol was a human but due to some...bad circumstances, he became a Gear and as a prototype, he is insanely strong. Too strong for his own good to the point where he needed to create a limiter to suppress the Gear cells and his Gear instincts. There has always been this internal conflict Sol has with his Gear side. 

Nagoriyuki is probably a similar case. Long story short, he might’ve been human once in his lifetime, but something must’ve happened (probably the cursed nature of his sword) to where he became a vampire. As a vampire, you would obviously begin to act out on your bloodlust and impulse to drink blood. Upon discovering the traditions of the Bushido Code of the Samurai, he studied it and tried to obtain inner peace with himself and his vampiric side. 

 While he does come off as a loner, I have doubts that Nagoriyuki built that mechanical mask by himself. He likely had help someone within the P.W.A.B. or something. Who that person is, it’s unknown and I’m not going to speculate it for we still don’t know all the details of the Strive story. 

However, unlike Sol, Nagoriyuki doesn’t seem like he’ll hesitant to remove his limiter and access his full power. 

“I know the time of darkness will come some day but I will fight it till the day I die Break it out! Break it out! Dive in the deep! Like cold steel I will not face my doom, SAYONARA “

This part could mean that Nagoriyuki is well-aware that his impulses could overtake him at any moment if he is pushed to the extreme. However, the lyrics may imply that he isn’t backing down and will keep fighting those impulses until the day he dies. If anything, in the process of learning the Bushido Code, the man likely has an immense indomitable will that helps him maintain his humanity and self-awareness. He’s not afraid to face his demons and is determined to fight them. 

I really believe that Nagoriyuki’s theme is all related to his ideals and personal struggles as a person. In principle, he may have this belief that everyone has reason for fighting. If you are fighting, you should a goal in mind. But in the process of striving and fighting for your goal, you must achieve spiritual enlightenment to reflect on yourself and fight your inner demons. This can sort of tie-in toward the theme of the game. The title is Strive and in lore, the characters are fighting for something, but before they do reach their goal, they must reflect on themselves as individuals. Basically, it’s discovering and awakening their utmost potential. 

That concludes my theory on what I believe could be is Nagoriyuki’s personality and backstory. Like I said before and I’ll say it once again, this must be taken with a grain of salt and be viewed as a mere interpretation of mine, not a fact. The story mode may debunk my theory or not. This is all for the sake of fun and being hyped for the upcoming installation.

I have to say, his theme song is freakin’ awesome to listen to. I think I’ll make it my third favorite next to Colors and Society.
