When he said "please" to ask Hannibal to go along with the FBI using him as bait while hinting at the fact that this was good for his plan, too, and looking down at Hannibal after Dolarhyde shot him in the stomach and he collapsed in front of Will...

I think the conclusion here is that while you might assume that the prideful, manipulative, brutal serial killer would be the obvious choice, Will is a more likely choice for the sadist of the relationship and has just as much of a penchant for bitchy cruelty and bloodshed as Hannibal. “You delight, I tolerate….” Sir. Once again thinking about the power of Will Graham to turn Hannibal Fuckin' Lecter into the POV character for the audience because you'll see this beautiful man with his frizzy curls and his big wet blue eyes just quivering with shame and horror at himself whispering brokenly, "I liked killing" and you'll be like "BABYGIRL. Chilton was right about Hannibal being the Ripper and was the only one in a group of FBI BAU agents and professional psychologists (all of whom worked with/had read psych journals about Will’s empathy and its accuracy) to listen to Will’s accusations and back him up to Jack, and when Jack brushed him off, he was framed and shot by mistake for his efforts.

Chilton, Abel Gideon and Freddie Lounds were also the only ones to pick up on the blatantly obvious fact that Hannibal and Will were certainly not just psychiatrist and patient/FBI coworkers and something more complicated, messy and personal than friends, as well as their habit of communicating via fucked up scenarios and violence. He was right that “the friendship ended with disembowelment” and that murder was tantamount to flirtation— after Mizumono, both of them realize their connection is immutable, and proceed to flip tf out about it.

Chilton (and Freddie, but less thoroughly fs) were also the only ones in an embarrassingly qualified and experienced group of people to pick up on the fact that while Will had had encephalitis since ep1 and Hannibal gave him a cause for and inspirations to tap into his desire for violence, Will had his own darkness in him from the start that he hid from others more than he did from himself under a snippy mask and the job he chose. And called him on it, only to be snarked at and charbroiled.

Chilton may have been a self-important jerk of an unfortunately common administrative type who tried less than ethical methods on his more violent patients (but honestly, allowing the guards to beat up Gideon— who’d just killed their nurse coworker and was in there for killing his family— is standard prison fare), but he was the only one smart enough and humble enough to say that Hannibal was a psychiatric conundrum as stated in the novels, despite his glaring similarities to psychopaths.

I think the secret is that if a character has some flavor of sleazy snark and is irritating and gossipy in nbc Hannibal, listen to what they have to say under pain of pain, death, and likely government crisis via gory gay elopement 😭

That one scene where jack is saying there’s no way Hannibal and Will have a good relationship bc they’ve sent assassins after one another and chilton is the only one to pipe up and say that’s basically foreplay for them…iconic

This is literally a canon-compliant HC I’ve always believed in too, lmfao. Chilton rudely told Will that he’d read about his empathy and the theories others had on it in the psychiatric journals, which gives a loose background to Will’s comments about distrusting & disliking psychiatrists. He had seen more than one psychiatrist/therapist before, based on various comments of his and Alana’s in S1.

Sadly for him, as usual, it seems like his unique empathy condition was too sparkly a rare gem for them to follow privacy regulations over and/or not pry about and publish on. Hannibal probably read those same journals like he did in the novels and browsed Tattlecrime, so he probably knew about Will and found him intriguing before he even met him.

So basically, Hannibal signing on as Will’s therapist and partner in the field was like if you met your favorite bombshell model from the fashion mags because of drama at her workplace. And she immediately calls you a fugly bitch to your face while fluttering her lashes at you. Will was the girl in the magazine for him…. Hannibal “unreachable idol crush” trope realness 💀
