Chapter Three: Pathetic Attempts

A frown graced on the handsome face of your ex Professor Hannibal Lecter. The thermometer said you still had a burning fever.

Lecter made you drink ice lemonade and cold soda.

He had no choice. Picking you up, bridal style, he walked up the stairs and to the fancy bathtub which was connected to his room.

Lecter already prepared the bath with cold water and scented oils. Gulping in nervousness, he set you down slowly on the surface of the water.

Your eyes opened and you squirmed at the low temperature of the water.

Firmly holding and looking at you. "Don't resist."

You were too scared to disobey the older man so you nervously sat down on the chilly tub and took a long breath.

That is where you realized. You were naked! You covered your breasts and blushed. Out of the corner of his eye, Lecter wanted to laugh but held a straight face. You were so cute when embarrassed.

Before he kidnapped you, he set up cameras in your bathroom and saw you bathe and change before many times. 

So, he wasn't new to you.

But, that didn't mean he was bored of you. He loved seeing you exposed. It was even better now since it was in love in person and he could see you up close. Your natural perky tits made him hot and horny.

Lecter felt his boner rise. He knew it was wrong and not appropriate now to take you. But, he was willing to wait. He could easily rape you and force you. But, he doesn't want you. He loves you. Lecter wanted you to submit yourself.

"We need to get your temperature down."

You didn't say a word and let your ex teacher get a bar of soap and rub you.

Luckily, you didn't return to the basement. He carried you to the dining table and sat you on the chair. The table spread looked professional. You saw Caviar, smoked salmon, a big bowl of salad, and wine.

But sadly, Lecter sat next to you instead of across in the head chair. "I decided to give you alcohol to ease your headache. Don't make me regret it. Behave." Lecter gave you a warning look.

Gulping, you said yes. 

Smiling in approval, Lecter loaded your plate. 

"Here you go, Darling." He stabbed a piece of salmon and held it to your plump red lips.

Fearfully, you took a bite. You loved it. You tasted lemon, paprika and other spices you never knew.

It was better than Red Lobster.

"Wow. This is delicious. You cooked this?" You peeked at him in curiosity.

Lecter was surprised at how well mannered you were. But, he didn't show it. He expected you to act bratty and give him attitude and cause another fight.

The look you gave him was so sweet and innocent. He wanted to coo and stroke your face.

Smiling, he nodded. "I am talented at cooking. Mostly meat. I don't cook desserts or bake much."

The whole dinner, you felt better after each bite. The meal was hearty. The medicine, bath, fresh and natural food healed you.

Now, you were good as new again. Hannibal noticed too. He felt relaxed knowing you will not die of illness. 

Once again, he carried you to the basement. This time, he tucked you in without the chain. You looked up at him. 

"Don't try anything stupid." He seemed to have read your mind. He leaned over to you and kissed you on your forehead. "Good night, sweet heart."

You blinked. "Good night." You whispered.

Lecter hid his glee. You were slowly accepting him. Soon, you will be all over him and be an official couple.

He knew the police were after you. But, since you are an adult, he can persuade you to say you ran away and the charges by your father will be dropped.

Life is finally going back to normal for Lecter. Normal as in going his way.

If you’re writing Will from out of this area in todays age, his teenage years would have been filled with country hood shit

Also Shreveport is on the complete opposite side of the state from New Orleans, top to bottom. Not left to right

Swamps aren’t solid land. The land moves around as it’s floating in the water. Lots of potential for metaphorical shit here

We associate Will with small fishing boats but there are SO MANY. Especially on the Red River that Shreveport is on. Party barges, casino river boats, really anything. And if Will knows how to fix motors he could prolly do stuff like Hotwire a car, make something into a weapon/explosive, the potential here is endless

People from Louisiana are usually EXTREMELY superstitious. You could lean into this, or vice versa make Will into an extreme skeptic

Hannibal wouldn’t be used to the weather there at all. It’s easier to be hot at the beach/ on an island

Will would 100% be frustrated at some point because of how different grocery store stock is between Louisiana and Virginia. I haven’t lived there in years and I still get mad about it sometimes

There’s so much more to Louisiana is a very cool place with amazing people and ecosystems. I hope one day it’s a place where the government actually helps people, but for now what I see depicted in fic makes me laugh sometimes.

Cobra Kai S4 - How it all Came Undone

Alright, so I was thinking about holding off on this until S6 was done done, but I think that I have enough to really... say the thing. With the caveat the final five episodes could be a mathematical outlier and fix everything wrong with S4-6.

But I have my doubts.

So this is about how the show changed from Season 3 to Season 4 and how that change snowballed out of control and unmade what worked about the series, but didn't replace it with anything better.

Spoilers for... a bunch of the show.

How Johnny got his Groove Back

So Season 1-3 has a very tight narrative focus on it. It's about Johnny. Our loser protagonist, trying to be better, is Johnny. Every character with a focus is either directly connected to Johnny, or connected to Miguel (Johnny's star pupil).

Daniel is his former nemesis.

Kreese is his former teacher.

The only exception in these first three seasons is Daniel's little trip to Okinawa having the characters from the second movie. They have nothing to do with Johnny, but in Season 3 they were a brief stop to show Daniel he did not know everything.

This story was still about Johnny. And his slow, often backslid, progress to make himself better. He learned from his mistakes (slowly), and when he hit a setback... he got drunk and banned from a nearby applebees.

Johnny is a hot mess, and bad at things.

But he was working, more or less, forward. The only one of his lingering plots to not really work forward was Robby. The writers either were saving it for later, or just had no idea how to fix it so they... didn't. He got close in Season 2, but that finale happened to derail everything.

But, it's fine, Season 4 will push the narratives forward. Right?

Enter the Best/Worst part of the Show

I need to be clear on this: I love Terry Silver.

He's an amazing antagonist, Thomas Ian Griffith is having the time of his life. He steals basically every scene he's on camera for. This absolute cartoon of a man is great.

What does he have to do with Johnny Lawrence? Yes, Terry is Daniel's personal Lucifer. He's a part of the franchise. But what does he have to do with Johnny? So far, until this season, the narrative was very squarely on moving Johnny forward as a character. Ignoring forward momentum for Daniel (which is fine, he's not the main character) to try to push just a little bit more energy into Johnny as a believable flawed protagonist.

And now our main power on the villain side doesn't give a fuck about Johnny and wants to play Hannibal Lecter with Daniel. This pivoted the focus on the narrative. Away from what directly impacted Johnny, to a more nebulous 'the fate of Karate in the valley.' Which is where are problems start.

How this Falls Apart

The focused Johnny-ness of Seasons 1-3 meant that the climax of each season (even if about other people) fed into Johnny's narrative, being either a push forward, or a kick down the stairs. But Johnny's plot beat was tied to the finale cleanly, and that bond went both ways, it fed into Johnny's continued narrative.

The problem is it meant they didn't establish a narrative through line for Daniel. He kind of existed to be a problem (S1-2) and a begrudging ally (S3). So when Season 4 put a villain that really called for focus on Daniel, they hadn't set-up a groundwork for how that narrative would shape or grow Daniel into something new.

More on that later.

And with the new focus on Daniel, the lingering Johnny plot threads just- didn't get resolved effectively. Robby and Johnny was resolved in the most lackluster way at the start of Season 5, because they didn't establish much of anything for it in Season 4, and had to put too much time into the 'fate of the Valley.'

But Daniel didn't have a momentum, so he's just- fighting the good fight without it impacting him other than annoying his wife. So the pair of them just kinda- cycle through their usual 'good notes' without it being a good tune. Johnny gets the good moments of character growth (undermind by keeping his behavior more or less the same), Daniel continues to be ungiving and mule-headedly set in his ways (without any introspection at all).

Daniel during the first three seasons is, generally, an antagonist. He doesn't have to grow and learn lessons, he is not the hero of the story. But once he becomes the defacto protagonist because of Terry, he kind of needs to evaluate his life choices a bit more and not just- repeat the same mistakes over and over without thinking it through.

Are the Kids Alright?

The teenager plots do a little better, sorta. For the sake of sanity the 'important' ones are Miguel, Sam, Robby, Tory, Hawk, and Kenny. And of them I'd only give Miguel, Sam, Tory, and Kenny the label of 'primary protagonist.' (Miguel in S1-2, Sam in S3-4, Tory in S5-6, and Kenny in S4-5.)

The issue is that most of the kid narratives resolve rather nicely and then... you have to keep the character around but also give them nothing to do? Which is a lot of the issues here. Except Robby who I will pay special attention to (also the worst resolution of their problems of the bunch).

Robby doesn't have a coherent narrative push, he ends up on whatever side lets him fight the people he needs to fight. Does it make sense for him to join Cobra Kai in S3? No but we need him in the story, and the alternative is Kyler. And Kyler sucks. Did we give a compelling reason for him to build a relationship with his dad? No, but we needed to spend plot time on Terry's McKarate School Master Plan.

Often the plot we get is good, but it always seems to be at the expense of Robby getting anything.

Can this be Fixed?

Not really. Nothing the final five eps of S6 can do will change how poorly focused 4-5 were. Going back in time we can try to keep the focus on Johnny. Chozen and Mike are good reminders, for Daniel, in spite of everything wrong with Johnny. Johnny never tried to kill him. That if Daniel can move past things with them, it should be easier with Johnny.

Or in the other direction, you can loop early season Daniel into current Daniel's plot. Bringing in Terry, the actual reason Daniel has PTSD over Cobra Kai, might give him the tools to understand why he reacted so badly to Johnny reopening the Dojo. So he can account for his behavior and try to find a way out of this cycle. If Daniel is the season focus (S4), you can actually give Johnny a plotline where he makes amends with Robby (provided Robby isn't- you know, drinking the Kreese and Silver kool-aid).

You could also not- repeatedly have Daniel and Johnny break-up over and over only to immediately remind them that Terry and Kreese are around. You could have Johnny's behavior obviously shift across the six seasons. You can have Daniel take responsibility for anything he's been wrong about over the six seasons. There's a lot of could have here.

I'm not saying the first three seasons were perfect- but they all were walking in the same direction, no matter how slowly they were going.

I know I neglected Gellert Grindelwald and Doctor Hannibal Lecter. I am guilty. She here is a story for you guys to dwell on.

It was finally October. You hated Summer 2023. Thanks to global warming and climate change, the air was more tense and uncomfortable. You didn't like snow or ice. You loved autumn and spring best. But this summer was like a desert. It shouldn't be this hot.

You rubbed your aching temples. You needed to lie down. To your surprise, your car got a flat tire as you came out of the store. How did this happen? Did someone do it or did your driving caused you to hit something? You don't remember.

You decided to walk to your college dorm and then call the mechanic. You were about to cross the street when a car almost ran over your foot. You stepped back and gasped in shock. That was close.

You frowned and saw the culprit car roll it's window down.

It was Professor Hannibal Lecter. He was your psychology teacher. You had him last semester

He was mean to you. Always giving you detention and humiliating you in class. A bully.

You gulped in nervousness. Since he had and has so many students, you hoped he will not recognize you. But sadly he did

"Miss Name. Is that you?" He smiled. "I am sorry I almost hit you."

You gave him a tight smile and assured him out of politeness. You kind of hated him for the way he treated you.

I always thought the dynamic of power fascinating. Need and demand. The one in need always looking up to the one with means. Nothing can have value without being an object of utility, said Marx, apparently. Sell me this pen, Jordan Belfort asks Bo Bodnick. Come closer, demands Hannibal. What did you do, asks the police officer. Nothing can really work if there’s no one to obey, to give the right answer, do the right move, give the missing piece.

I don’t know what happened, but I know something will. I can feel it. I’m scared as things get worse by the second. The things we found, we should have left it all there, should’ve never said anything, to anyone. I don’t know if I trust Nico anymore. I’m worried for them, really worried. And I’m afraid of what they’ll end up doing.

I should’ve stayed home; I shouldn’t have come.

Hyde was having the time of their life. The bass, blasting in their ears, so loud the song itself was unidentifiable. There were only vibrations, moving the crowd along, the smell of expensive perfumes and sweat made the atmosphere feel hundred times hazier when mixed with the flashing lights and erotic-induced humidity.

Before getting drunk they were admiring the beauty of the adolescence madness. The need for escapism. For some it was drinking, drugs, smoking and snoring, others found comfort in flirting and sexualizing their own bodies, kissing whoever gave consent, and sometimes, who didn’t. Girls and others escaped their turbulent minds in a never-ending search for male validation and praise, using miniskirts and tight tops that were definitely too uncomfortable for their own taste. Of course, you could find some girls that weren’t in that subconscious treasure haunting, the girls that were called “nerd whores’’ or “dy—s” around the corridors, which for some wasn’t wrong, but still makes you wonder what goes through a college jock’s mind besides slurs and boobs.

At first, the party was insufferable, too hot, too crowded, the music was too loud. That only lasted for 3 shots of vodka and a smoke off of someone’s blunt. Hyde’s head was too heavy to give into the foolish mindset of it all too easily, she needed something stronger. Not 20 minutes later, they were on hunching over a small coffee table near the walls. Hyde could hear a group of people screaming encouragement to her while they organized the powder in thin lines, conscious enough not to laugh on top of the newly bought heroin, but not enough to realize they needed to stop. First line was gone, then the second, third and fourth. Their brain sparking with artificial euphoria, finally the weight on her shoulders and hands was lifted, finally a moment when their faces, filled with terror, disappeared. They felt at peace, at last. They knew what they had done was wrong, gruesome, but nothing could’ve stopped it, not the police, not the teachers. They were at peace with it all, and from that moment until the sirens started to substitute the loud music around the space, they were it all.

-So, Hyde Willows. Why don’t you tell me about tonight? - the police officer asked, emotionless. There was no doubt they had done it, Officer Fei knew that, but the motives and actions behind the crime were still unclear. 3 students, all from Hyde’s social circle and 1 teacher, were all found dead. The display of their bodies, how calculated it was, how it seemed so meticulously planned, everything from the time of their death to the reason of death. All of it seemed too much to have come from that kids brain, that wasted college kid in front of her, who has not said a word for the half hour they have been together, the same blank stare stuck on their eyes, mascara and lipstick all smudged, sweat sticking their black hair to the cheeks. More silence filled the room -Great, anything else? - She bluffed, getting up, pretending to leave, maybe something could spark out of her, but to no avail. The cold in the interrogation room seemed to pierce through Hyde’s skin, Fei saw their body hair get up and their body shivering slightly, but apparently not enough to sober them up.

i know that the shot of will laying his head against hannibal’s chest in twotl is one of the most iconic images of the show but like…. sometimes i think of it and it takes my breath away bc it’s one of the only times that will seeks physical touch from someone beyond touching a hand and bc i think laying your head on someone’s chest is one of the most tender and romantic things that you can do. it’s pure intimacy, and they really gave of us that between two men on cable television in 2015. it flies in the face of generally socially accepted ways for men to touch each other in american culture, and i know we rage against there being no kiss, but that’s bc to us as lgbtq people it’s obvious what’s between them, but i think it was radical in a way. a kiss would have been a distraction to the general public viewers bc all they’d be able to think about is the fact that it’s two men kissing. but will laying his head on hannibal’s chest, peaceful at last….. that is everything bc hannibal is his everything now, all else has been stripped away, and for the first time, in the entire show will rests without guilt in the only place that can offer it to him. not to go all “their relationship is something deeper than romance and sex” but like it really is. obv i’m of the belief that romance and sex is part of their relationship, but that would be nothing without the simple yet heart wrenching core of it — that they are the only ones who understand and see each other truly for what they are and they are the only ones who can change each other until they fit together perfectly. they made a place for each other there in each other, and the embrace is the physical representation of it. nothing fits like a head against a shoulder or an arm around the waist

no no no bc will asking hannibal, “how do you see me?” in episode one is so insane bc he wouldn’t have asked just anybody that. he was not inviting the scrutiny of anyone and i mean anyone. he didn’t want people to perceive him. the way he dresses, his glasses, his biting wit, his teacher persona… they’re all methods of self-protection to keep people from looking too closely. but he asks hannibal what he sees bc he really wants to know, and hannibal, who he has just met, doesn’t even hesitate to tell will something that no one else ever has before. something dangerous, something powerful said with admiration. with a smile.
