If looks could kill, Galinda would be a murderer several times over by now. 

She gets clocked over the head for one such glare, the guard escorting her snickering rudely when her yelp of pain gets smothered by the cloth in her mouth. Her blood boils under her skin, her rage making her whole body shake.  

She can still picture her parents’ corpses in her mind. 

Galinda’s anger lashes within her, but she restrains it as best she can. As much as she wants to kick and scream and burn this palace to the ground, she is not so foolish as to not recognize when she has been defeated. She is helpless. Hopeless. 

Lost. 

The guards’ hands dig bruises into the soft flesh of her upper arms as they practically carry her down the hall, dumping her in the care of a group of handmaids. They are young girls, teenagers by the looks of it, with sunken eyes that dart nervously from her to the guards. 

“What are our orders?” the oldest asks. Her voice is carefully neutral. 

The lead guard shrugs, hitting Galinda between the shoulder blades so she stumbles forward a step, nearly tripping over the chains on her ankles. “Whatever you usually do with ‘em.”

The girls exchange another round of nervous glances. The oldest nods. “We’ll take care of it.”

The guards shuffle out, two of them remaining to watch the doors. The oldest handmaid steps forward, eyes pointedly not meeting Galinda’s as she runs a finger over the chains. She sighs, weary and low. 

Galinda is not the first royal prisoner they’ve been assigned. She has her doubts she’ll be the last.
