Sleeping Beauty Spring: "Sechs auf einen Streich – Dornröschen" ("Six at One Blow– Briar Rose") (2009 German TV film)

Sechs auf einen Streich ("Six at One Blow") is a series in the same vein as Märchenperlen – a German TV series of fairy tales, which airs new installments every Christmas season. It airs on a different channel than Märchenperlen (Das Erste), and its films are shorter at just an hour long, but the two series are very similar. It's probably no coincidence that Sechs auf einen Streich produced a Sleeping Beauty just a year after Märchenperlen adapted the tale.

This Sleeping Beauty takes a more serious tone than the Märchenperlen version, with a medieval setting, and with emphasis on courage, idealism, issues of social class, and children growing up and breaking free from their father figures' overprotection. The chief protagonist is Fynn (François Goeske), an orphaned stable boy at the castle of the arrogant Prince Eric (Niklas Osterloh). He lives with his uncle, the stable master August (Michael Hanemann), and we eventually learn that he knows nothing about his origins, but to his frustration, August refuses to tell him anything. Meanwhile, Prince Eric is training vigorously as a warrior, in hope of rescuing the beautiful "Briar Rose." When Fynn asks who "Briar Rose" is, August tells him the story, and we flash back a hundred and fifteen years.

In August's tale, the King (Martin Feifel) and Queen (Anna Loos) long for a child in vain, until one day a frog (a real frog, much cuter than Märchenperlen's CGI frog) foretells the birth of their daughter. When Princess Myrose is born, the King invites twelve fairies to the celebration, but due to a shortage of golden plates, he leaves out Maruna, the Fairy of Destiny (Hannelore Elsner). The other twelve fairies are youthful beauties with flowing hair and in long white robes, but the sinister Maruna looks like an aging version of Disney's Maleficent, dressed in purple and black, with her hair in buns that resemble horns. She curses the princess to die at age fifteen, which the youngest fairy (Theresa Vilsmaier) softens to a hundred-year sleep, and the King has all the spinning wheels in the kingdom taken from his distraught, pleading subjects and burned in a harsh scene recalling the 1971 German film.

Princess Myrose (Lotte Flack) grows up loved but lonely, in isolation from the world. But one day, while out riding, she escapes from her guards for a taste of freedom in the woods. Losing her way after dark, she she meets Maruna disguised as an old woman. Maruna – who isn't entirely evil, but a neutral figure who critiques injustice – informs Myrose of the King's ban on spinning, which has reduced the kingdom to a sparsely populated shadow of its former glory. This deeply troubles Myrose, and at her fifteenth birthday dinner, she confronts her father about it; when he won't explain, she angrily calls out his oppressive treatment of both his subjects and herself, and storms off. Thus she's alone when she hears an odd sound, which she follows up a spiral staircase into a tower... and there she finds Maruna disguised as another old woman with a spinning wheel. As in the Grimms' tale, when Myrose falls asleep, the rest of the court instantly does too, and briars grow around the castle.

Back in the present, August ends the story by showing Fynn an old portrait of Myrose. Smitten by her beauty, Fynn secretly trains as a fighter: first alone, later with lessons from his uncle. Finally, he sneaks out one night and journeys to the sleeping castle. There he meets Prince Eric, who laughs at the stable boy's ambition, but when Eric battles the briars himself, they entangle and kill him. Fynn then tries his own luck, and at the first stroke of his sword, the briars part by themselves and blossom with white roses.

Fynn's kiss wakes Myrose and the rest of the castle, and the King redeems himself by welcoming Fynn despite his lowly status. Then August arrives to reveal the truth: Fynn is a prince, whom August (secretly a duke) raised incognito to protect him after his grandfather and father both died in the briars trying to reach Myrose. After this, in an unusual touch, Myrose and Fynn don't become a couple straight away, but share a bonding montage as they enjoy their newfound freedom and make idealistic plans for their kingdoms' futures, culminating in a marriage proposal and kiss. Then a ball of yarn is tossed between all the characters – magically directed by an approving Maruna – so that its strands link everyone together, symbolizing reconciliation on both a personal and a worldwide level.

This is a visually lovely production, with its lush green landscapes and medieval costumes (although the hair and makeup are sometimes a bit too modern), and with the elegant white Lichtenstein Castle serving as Princess Myrose's home, while the robust, earth-toned Hohenzollern Castle serves as the castle where Fynn trains to fight. The medieval-flavored musical score is effective too, and the cast is excellently chosen. As for whether this version or the 2008 Märchenperlen version is better, I think that depends on your mood. For a lighter, funnier, quirkier version, turn to Märchenperlen, but for more of a classic sword-and-chivalry fairy tale with more emotional depth, choose Sechs auf einen Streich.

Another worthy addition to the array of Sleeping Beauties onscreen.

Es gibt sie noch, die guten Nachrichten. Die Bockenheimer Warte liegt ab heute am Hannelore-Elsner-Platz! Ich bin sehr gerührt, der Platz war heute proppenvoll, um sie zu ehren und um zu ehren, wofür sie stand: Eine Liebe zu der Liebe, die das Leben ist. Mike Josef hat eine sehr gute Rede gehalten, das hat er toll gemacht. Ich kann mich gut daran erinnern, wie er zwei Wochen vor der Wahl alleine, wirklich alleine, an einem Stand der SPD auf der Zeil stand, wie verloren, aber ganz tapfer stand er da. Und heute sehe ich ihn das erste mal live nach der Wahl, möge ihm eine gute Arbeit für die Stadt gelingen. Wichtiger heute: Er hat so lustig und schön Elsner zitiert.

Könnte man die Warte selbst in Steinhauertower umbenennen, einfach um klarzustellen, das Bockenheim momentan die Welthauptstadt des Überschwangs ist?

Wenn nicht ist auch ok. Hauptsache der Überschwang bleibt wenigstens vorhanden. Lass' Basel die Welthauptstadt des Cordon Bleue sein, lass' Alsenz den Ort sein, an dem alles Sinn macht, lass' Wuppertal die wahre Hauptstadt des 19. Jahrhunderts sein, lass' Petersburg driften und die weißen Nächte haben, lass' Recife die Hauptstadt der Schiffbrüchigen und des Lichtbrüchigen sein. Wir sind Überschwangsstadtteilchen, wir sind Bockenheim (sic!) und unsere Warte ist eine große, aufteilbare Torte. Vor einigen Jahren wurde ein Stückchen des Platzes vom Carlo- Schmid-Platz, jetzt wurde ein weiteres Stückchen zum Hannelore-Elsner-Platz und wenn das so weiter geht, ist die Bockenheimer Warte bald der Platz mit der dichtesten Ansammlung von Plätzen und Wegen in Deutschland oder sogar weltweit.

Was habt ihr denn schon gemacht? Ihr seid so albern. An diesen Satz und den späteren Satz Sprich nicht so mit mir aus der berühmten Folge Durch die Nacht muss ich mich oft erinnern. Sie sagt beides aus ihrem Vorsprung heraus. Die Folge ist so berühmt, auch weil sich dort drei von ihrer allerbesten Seite zeigen. Diese Folge ist wohltuend, drei in hohen Spannungen öffnen sich einander und vertrauen sich eine Nacht lang. Das machen vielleicht nur Nächte möglich, am Tag darauf kann es sogar Laberkater geben. Das Katergewissen, das ist ein mieser niederer Nichtmaldämon, das ist der Tag.

Einmal stand sie, Elsner, im Kinomuseum plötzlich vor mir, da wurde ich rot und habe gestammelt, ich würde mich wie ein blöder Fan benehmen und sie sagt höflich, wahrscheinlich sei ich ein Fan, ob ich blöd sei wisse sie nicht. Nicht nur ihr Charme war entwaffnet und alles an ihr schien wach. Fan war ich auf jeden Fall, wegen der ungebändigten Liebe zu der Liebe, die das Leben ist und weil sie diese Liebe herzlich lachend austrahlte, während die Stimme etwas davon wie der Inn, in dessen Nähe sie geboren wurde, kühl, ruhig und mit dämmriger Dunkelheit mittrug, nur eben im melancholischen Gegengewicht. Sie hatte eine Stimme, durch die etwas zieht.
