Do you have any favorite traditional fantasy novels? I’ve read the Kushiel’s Dart & Captive Prince series and am on the lookout for more.
Those are two of the series I would have recommended! To be honest, I haven't read a lot of traditional (I assume you mean classic second world adventure fantasy) fantasy since i was teen: I tend to be more drawn to contemporary fantasy, urban fantasy, weird fiction, slipstream, and similar genres right now. But I'm leaning back into reading some of the classics as I go.
I read a good chunk of Mistborn and loved the magic system and the worldbuilding and just stopped because I had trouble connecting to the characters, so that might be a good book for another reader. I of course love Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicle's books but those are more gothic fiction, hmm....Honestly I think Hannah's Whitten's Nightshade Crown series captures the feel and sweep of classic fantasy with a super lush, atmospheric, romantic twist. Similar, The Seven Deaths of the Saint by Alix Harrow is yes, experimental and a bit more literary, but you cannot tell me it doesn't capture the mythic, world-ending, out-of-time quality of classic fantasy.

My thoughts on FIVE
youtube
LONG POST AHEAD
I found it promising, I’ll tell you that much. I do have to acknowledge my bias towards to this piece of art. It’s WONDERFUL that a musical like SIX has sparked so much creativity and is even getting a parody!! WE’VE MADE IT INTO THE HALL OF FAME QUEENDOM!!
ALSO FUCKING JAIME??? STARKID FANS RISE UP!!
I’m was giving this thing the benefit of the doubt. I was sort of confused when I first learned about it, and I had this gut feeling that I’d hate it. I honestly thought it was kind of weird that we’re using this to make a parody of… TRUMP of all people??? Like these women are still ALIVE to my knowledge.
My only wish is that they acknowledge and give their opinion on this musical in some way because say it with me now; THEIR STILL ALIVE AND HAVE THE RIGHT TO AN OPINION ON HOW THEIR VIEWED!
However I have not seen it yet and I am excited to see what my favorite musical has inspired! …Is what I’d be saying if I hadn’t read some reviews. It seems the general consensus is that while it is funny it’s not as innovative in its humor as it could be. And it may not have done what it wanted
As this TheaterMania review states
“A musical send-up of the women in Trump’s orbit, Five: The Parody Musical, would seem to be just what the doctor ordered as we face the prospect of yet another Trump administration. So why wasn’t I laughing?“
I thought this article was being a little harsh on this musical, until I read THIS.
“The few genuinely funny moments in Five spring entirely from Jen Wineman’s adequate production — her choreography is both simplistic and sloppily executed, which is funny in its own way — and the ingenuity of the actors.”
I was surprised by this, the advertising leaned heavily into the humor of it all. The fact that it was a parody—“LOOK OUT SIX!” And “MAKE AMERICA LAUGH AGAIN!” made me excited to see how they’d creatively dunk on Trump. Like how SIX had done with Henry VIII
Then I remembered what else this article had said in regards to the humor
“The jokes generally hit three points: Donald Trump is orange, he has a small penis, and he likes getting peed on. This is territory that our overpopulated heard of late-night hosts have already stomped to death — without asking audiences to fork over the price of an off-Broadway ticket.””
And I was getting suspicious, so I looked at some more reviews. This article spends a lot of time dogging on FIVE and I was still trying to hold out hope.
This review from StageandCinema is a lot more kind! I was excited to find out what went RIGHT! About this musical!
“Five is much more sexual and crude in its descriptions of being fucked by Donald Trump. Hearing about his small prick and his sexual escapades (especially from pornstar Stormy), I struggled to immediately delete such images from my mind’s eye. The thought of Donald in any sexual act turned my stomach, which may have kept me from laughing. Perhaps nausea and comedy cancel each other out?”
OH… UHM…
Of course in the end they do have the same acknowledgment at the end of SIX, “Just because we were fucked by Donald Trump doesn’t mean we need to fuck each other over.” (A direct quote from the end of the paragraph containing the previous quote)
Through this article I also found out that this is actually a jukebox parody! (Which is when you parody existing songs in order to use it in the plot of a musical story telling medium). Which honestly was a welcome surprise. They’re not ashamed that is a BLATANT parody.
Okay! Let’s see what else we can find!
“It did seem like a clever idea, for at least five seconds”
WOW okay…
This article then goes on to discuss some political and legal matters that has come up surrounding the Sex worker that Trump is going against in court. He IS the first president with a criminal record (he went to court for sexual abuse, and also was impeached)
The article puts it perfectly
“Given such news of late, it’s increasingly difficult for me to appreciate, or even tolerate, a trivial show like “Five.” The creative team hasn’t read the room.”
This isn’t a fuck you to Trump supporters, this isn’t seriously discussing Trump’s effect on these women in ANY sort of fashion, this isn’t even ABOUT discussing Trump’s political status. It’s about parodying SIX and making fun of these women. The main selling point is “WHAT IF SIX BUT TRUMP!?”
“But even those who still view political humor as political armor will be disappointed, because “Five” seems little interested in Trump’s treatment of women, much less his threat to American democracy; instead, its main target is “Six.”  As political commentary, “Five” is near witless, tasteless, and toothless. But even just as a parody of “Six,” it’s too on the nose. If some theatergoers will find “Five” entertaining, I suspect it’ll largely be because its talented six-member cast makes the most of the moments in the show that add up to a stealth, second-rate “Forbidden Broadway.”
This review is BRUTAL it points out the flaws it see’s in FIVE with wit full words. This article was my turning point. It made me genuinely start to be dissatisfied with a show I HAVEN’T EVEN SEEN YET.
““Five” is not an exercise in female empowerment; the women in Trump’s lives are most often mocked.  Nor is it a takedown of a would-be tyrant; zingers against Trump rarely get more sophisticated than commenting on the size of his penis or calling him the orange bitch or orange troll.”
This is an insult to the very FABRIC of my opinions. THIS WAS A PARODY OF SIX. OF SIX. INCLUDE STUFF FROM SIX. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE MORAL DOES NOT MEAN YOU TAUGHT IT. TRUMP IS NOT A GOOD PERSON.
THIS IS A PARODY OF SIX. BE CREATIVE WITH YOUR INSULTS! IF YOU’RE MAKING A PARODY ABOUT TRUMP THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE SUFFARAGE OF WOMEN AND WHAT WE DO WITH TRAGEDY; FUCKING SHOW IT!
This is so obviously anti-Trump. But it does’t FEEL that way. It feels against these women as well. Which is strange, considering it’s supposed to be like SIX.
Don’t get me wrong I fucking HATE TRUMP CAN’T WAIT FOR HIS ACTIONS TO CATCH UP TO HIM. But HOLY SHIT this is NOT where I thought this musical was going!
I plan on looking more into this musical, but these are my thoughts for now. I was initially a hater, turned skeptic, turned confused and insulted.
Look—I don’t WANT to be so hateful about something I haven’t seen. But if THIS is what reviews are saying (and there’s barely any of them) then WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH IT???
I WANT THESE ACTRESSES TO HAVE AMAZING CAREERS! But if THIS is the show their put on, a show that is INSULTING women… then what???

Here's a rare gem for shameless promotion: The Likes of Us.
Having said that, let me immediately qualify it. It's not a gem because of the quality of the book or the score (they're, well, adequate). No, it's a gem because of the meta premise and the narrator. Allow me to explain.
You see, before writing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat together, Andrew Loyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote and pitched The Likes of Us, about Thomas Barnardo, who founded homes for poor children. It didn't sell, and they basically shoved it in a drawer and forgot about it (though ALW reused some of the melodies, most obviously turning "Love is Here" into "Travel Hopefully" in By Jeeves).
Here, have some booklet scans so I don't have to quote them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, the show was written in 1965, then had its "40th anniversary [performance] and yet world premiere" in 2005. ALW and Rice didn't really remember the plot and the book was constantly changing anyway, so the most brilliant possible choice was made: Stephen Fry was cast as a narrator.
Tumblr media
He does an absolutely wonderful job, turning what would otherwise be a cloying story with passable melodies into a delightfully funny evening. Honestly, it's tempting to just make this post nothing but quotes of his narration, but I couldn't find a transcript and there are limits to how much I want to transcribe jokes when I'm trying to get you to listen to the album anyway.
Okay, just a few:
"It's told in song, dance, and spoken word as was the unbreakable fashion in musical theater at the time."
"Neither traumatic event, however, inspired a song from the two youthful authors, who one might well think these days be extremely aroused by the idea of an anti-lawyer number."
"'Will this last forever,' a simply ravishing melody but a rather risky title about three quarters of the way through any musical."
"There was here a scorchingly satirical song, I believe, making fun of poncy peers and fancy knights of the realm, but for some reason Lord Webber and Sir Tim Rice seem to have lost it."
youtube
Aside from the quips, my favorite of the actual songs is Going Going Gone, because I always love a good ensemble number listing stuff. (See also: "Under the Sea," "La Vie Boheme," "Murder, Murder," etc) (That, and the musical doesn't build up the romance enough to make the ballads affecting.)
youtube
Of contemporary interest, Hannah Waddingham played Rose, the cockney woman offended by Bernardo's attitude about her neighborhood. So if you want to hear her singing something a little, uh, different from what you usually hear from her, you can listen to "We'll Get Him" and "Have Another Cup of Tea." (This was a year before she was cast in the West End Spamalot.)
Anyway, you can find a few clips from local productions on Youtube, but the real joy is Stephen Fry so you may as well just listen to the soundtrack on Spotify or something. I particularly recommend it for when you have a boring task to do (data entry?) and need something to keep you entertained without working up your passions or giving you a new hyperfixation.
Last quote: "And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what failed to launch the careers of Andrew Loyd Webber and Tim Rice 40 years ago."

The full fucking (ugly fish sculpture jumpscare) pajama treatment
I love in action movies when the hero gets captured and rendered unconscious by the villain and like wakes up in their lair the next morning having been changed into sleepwear. It’s such a funny affable villain thing to me.
Like it is kind of a power play to be like I could have done anything to you while you were unconscious but I choose not to hurt you (yet). But also it’s just so funny to me, it’s like “Oohh Im so evilly hospitable, I put you in pajamas mwaha doesnt that frighten you?” Man, no, it’s just a little weird

hiiii!!!!!!!! could I request best friend chan who confesses his feelings for reader on live not realizing they're watching? Hopefully this makes sense lol
|:: The chat's view on love
Tumblr media
Author's note: Hii!!!! Thank you for much for this request!! I hope I wrote this to your expectations!! Thank you so much,I'm sorry if it's not to your expectations because it definitely did not make me happy!! But I hope it's good enough.
Synopsis: With Bang Chan's live, Stays swarm in, asking questions and such..and one slip of his tongue revealed a big detail on his life...poor boy's crush.
Warnings: Idol! Bang Chan|| fem! Reader|| nothing really, sorry if it's pretty short.
Tumblr media
"No, Berry is actually doing good!! She's with Hannah in Australia, what are you talking about???" Chan asked the live with confused laughter, as he continued to talk with Stays on his chat. Almost a good few millions, actually.
As he answered questions, laughing softly it wasn't too big on his thoughts to really think everything through and see if Stays psycho-analyze everything he said or did. As he read out questions for himself, while playing random videos of his own entertainment.
"Chocolate or cookies and cream? I'm sorry...I gotta say cookies and cream, it's too bitter for me to eat chocolate in ice-cream." he said, shaking his head as he laughed. "How is your best-friend doing??" he read, and god was he delighted to talk about you!
He also took the time to check your texts from earlier this day, telling him to eat something, as he felt butterflies in his stomach and warmth in his chest, it was just adorable at how much you cared for him.
It felt delightful to get your texts, he didn't know why, it gave him some sort of joy...sure it meant he loved you, you're his best-friend after all, since his trainee years , but this just felt different...
Different from last month...He had no idea when it began, was it when you broke up with your stupid situationship type of boyfriend? Or was it when you personally came to see him after his group won and treated them all to dinner that night...
Maybe it was the fact that you cared for him so deeply, you got along well with Hannah and Berry and his entire family, the fact you always got a good morning and good night text for him in a weird way, how you're always ready to comfort him or others, how you're always the first to support him...It came naturally for him to fall in love with you, how couldn't he??
"They're actually doing pretty great. They recently got me a brand new rice cooker after my old one broke and I was crying to them about it...And god, was it so sweet!! It has bears drawn on it." Chan told the viewers, most commenting about "how cute!" they visualized it to be, how they'd like him to "show it!", and others as he laughed and nodded,
"I will, I will...when I can...But yeah, they've been good. I was texting them today about the new beats I was making and they told me very gently and sweetly, "go eat, la!!" and it's so cute! They're so adorable!!" he said, laughing, as he pressed his lips together to stop the biggest, giddy smile reaching his lips...
"I seriously adore them, they're such an important person in my life and I don't think I ever want to...I don't think I ever want them to leave me..or be apart and I don't want us to drift apart..I might not be making sense, but it's tr-true." he said,
"I ADORE them..." he said, before his eyes glanced up to catch the camera, and he quickly added, "Like a friend, of-course" His heart skipping a beat, as he thought of you again..perfect in his eyes, almost perfect.
He might have not noticed, but Stays definitely did. Speaking from the heart, his irises slightly growing large as he thought of you, an uncontrollable smile on his lips, the one smile where his tiny dimples start showing up as he smiles... That's love...not just admiration for a friend...
And you definitely knew it was love as you stared at the live with bright eyes, feeling flustered already, your stomach cramping in as if on a roller-coaster, you couldn't control your own smile after hearing his honey-dipped words...
The Stays watching knew the warmth those words spread, even in them...Like blankets on a particularly hard day when you simply want to cry, like the warm soup after feeling bad about yourself in the past few days, like the productivity you feel proud of after not living up to your standards, like that one friend's text after you feel left out...
It was warm and it spread to Chan's veins as he glanced at his phone, smiling down, seeing it was yours as he opened, his eyes widening as he scanned the words...
Trying to hide his urge to scream in happiness...But he heard a ping, and he quickly turned back up at camera, eyes widening a bit more that he was still Live..as he reached and looked at his phone, before hurriedly smiling towards the live and Stays,
"I-uh-I gotta go, Stays, a little-...Uh. A littl-emergency, I'm late-late to practice!!" he said, hurriedly shutting off the camera and picking up his phone, his bag and running out to see you as he struggled to put on some shoes, rushing down his apartment...tripping over his own feet slightly as he ran, smiling down at your text.
"I love you too. More than a friend though :)"

Question more so for Hannah than Tessa but who knows, maybe podcasts exist in the dnd world.
wanted to know if you had any queer fantasy and/or sci-fi audio drama recommendations. I’ve listened to and loved Welcome To NightVale, Jar Of Rebuke, Absolutely No Adventures, Zoo, The Bright Sessions, and of course, Inn Between. Thanks regardless :]
DO I
Yeah I definitely do. I'm actually one of those cishets myself, so just to be absolutely clear, i'm going to include only shows with at least one main character who's not like. You know. One of me. I'm also looking at your selections and noting a sort of steady pacing, respect for exploration, and character focus, so I'll be leaning toward those.
FANTASY
Dragon's Rest is a sitcom in the vein of ANA and Inn Between--a fantasy inn, a grumpy owner, her hapless hero hopeful busboy, the local lush, a bard who, and I cannot stress this enough, is too dumb to read. It's delightful, honestly.
Eeler's Choice is a strange and beautiful oceanic adventure about magic, siblings, and giant eels. The music slaps also.
Electromancy: imagine if Harry Potter was a) not written by a freakin transphobe, and b) actually asked hard questions about imperialism. Like hey, should we be doing imperialism?
The Kingmaker Histories is hard to describe. I can say "steampunk," and "magic" and "magical politics" and "Collette's got a jewel stuck in her head that explodes people sometimes" but that's not even the half of it.
Sidequesting is like, best friends with ANA. Rion, a brave hero, is given a magic sword for an epic quest...and promptly goes and does literally everything else. It's so nice.
Starfall hey what's up Starfall I love you Starfall, Starfall's about a magic theater troupe and definitely not also about how imperialism is bad, actually. Fel and Leona own my whole heart. Friends.
Sci-Fi
Ask Your Father is one of those shows that hits you in the teeth. When an accident sends an astronaut and his AI bestie way off course, he finds himself lost in space, answering questions from his kids and husband that will absolutely break your heart. I cried. A lot.
Gastronaut is near-future sci-fi about a bougie foodie who goes on a journey to discover the food of the Asian diaspora throughout the solar system. And things go...very bad. This show loves food so much and it loves the characters even more.
Midnight Burger is...everything. How do you even describe it. It's hard sci-fi dressed up in a found family package and served with fries. Or maybe beans and rice, if Gloria's cooking. It is a deeply cynical show that nevertheless insists that the universe is worth fighting for, with everything you've got.
The Pasithea Powder is explicitly written for people who like a gritty, uncomfortable, messy romance. Like, did you like Stucky fanfic? So do the writers and it's amazing. The tagline is that a retired fighter pilot/war hero and a disgraced scientist/war criminal used to be best friends. They still might be, if the other one will pick up the phone.
Second Star to the Left is about colonization and xenobiology and the kinds of connections you can make light years away from each other. It's about rules and when it's okay to break them. It's beautiful.
Startripper!! is also very ANA and Inn Between--an accountant decides to ditch his day job, buy the far-future equivalent of a Millennium Falcon replica, and travel the universe for the rest of his life. It's so fun.
The Strange Case of the Starship Iris is like, if Firefly had real Asians in it. It's about a group of space smugglers turned galaxy heroes, and it's absolutely incredible.
Travelling Light is another travelogue, but this one features a person doing archival work for their community and meeting amazing people and hearing amazing stories while they do it. It's so gentle and wonderful.
World Gone Wrong is a chat podcast between two separated roommates who are trying to make sense of the end of the world. Like what do you do with that extra hour in the day now? Is my community going to lose its mind because some of the trees look like women? How can I throw a poetry jam that's inclusive for my werewolf friends? It's so well crafted and well acted. I think about it every day.
Wow this ended up long. There's a few to get you started!

Actually, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but while Rolin and the other writers have said that we would revisit events from Season 1 in Season 2, such as the 1x05 fight, I actually don't remember them ever saying that when the show revisited those events in Season 2 that then we would have "the real version of events." I don't remember them ever saying, or promising, that specific thing about the revisits.
This article here, from December of 2022, has the first instance when one of the show writers, Hannah Moscovitch, talked about things being revisited, but she never uses the words "real events":
“All of it will be revisited,” says Moscovitch, adding that includes the horrific assault of episode five and Louis’ role in Lestat’s attempted murder in episode seven. “But I want to be careful to say that Louis will never be not believable as a victim,” she says.
I honestly think the idea of Season 2 showing us the "real events" is something only fandom has been saying since we learned of the revisits officially in December of 2022. But I honestly don't recall Rolin or Hannah or anyone connected with the show actually saying that revisiting in Season 2 would give us the "real" version of everything.
Again, anyone is free to correct me on that one if I am wrong about it.
And just regarding myself personally, I never anticipated we would get the "real" version of events as the post I linked to from last year above shows. I figured we'd get more context wrt the fight when we got it from Louis' POV, but I myself never said we'd get the "real" version of the fight. I even said that what we get of the fight in Season 3 from Lestat's POV might also carry on into multiple seasons as well.
So, at least from what I remember of what has been said about all of this from the writers and showrunner, there was no promise of a "real" version, just a revisit. A "real" version was more a fandom interpretation of hearing that revisits of things like the 1x05 fight would happen, IIRC.
Again, if someone has a link or something to an interview that has Rolin, Hannah, Adam, or anyone else saying something like that, I will stand corrected on it. And I actually don't think they've ever said that Lestat's version of events is the "true" version either, even though that is very much something Anne Rice said about it all. But Rolin and the other writers haven't so far, as far as I can recall. (Again, if someone has a link to them doing so, I will stand corrected.)
Do I think they might deviate from what Rice herself said about Lestat's version of things? No. But I don't think they are just going to present Lestat's POV of events without some type of critique or way to not actually verify the things Lestat presents when we finally hear his side of things.
Take for example the backstory Armand gave about his relationship with Lestat. As I said at the time if you know how much of those events actually played out in TVL, then you know a key person who will very likely back up Lestat's story about what really happened was omitted in Armand's telling of things but who too was very much there for much of them -- Gabrielle. A second eye witness who was there but not at all mentioned by Armand when he spoke of it will be a key factor when it comes to why Lestat's version of what happened will look to be more believable than Armand's.
So no, I do not think the show is just going to present Lestat's version of things and just say in an interview or whatever outside of the show that "this is the real version" and leave it at that. That very much would be lazy writing, and I personally would call that out (loudly) if they did that.
I feel when they present Lestat's POV of things, they will very much have to -- and will -- do so in a way that will also be presented with some real verification of the things he says. It may not happen right away with everything in Season 3 (such as Gabrielle backing up Lestat's version of what happened with Armand -- because who knows when we'll see her in the present day) but I very much think it will happen.
And you know what? I strongly disagree that it's an easy way out, i.e. a cop-out wrt writing to have presented the story like this, with no clear "correct" version of events assigned at the end. If that were so, then stories/films like Kurosawa's Rashamon would fail to resonate with people as it still does over 70 years later. And this show has very much been employing The Rashamon Effect in its storytelling since the very beginning.
IMO, Lestat's POV will be presented in Season 3, and much of it very likely be given corroboration in some ways, like by Gabrielle wrt Lestat's backstory with Armand. But, at the end of the day, if people want to believe Lestat will come down to each viewer's own individual bias and interpretation -- and I honestly think that will be the case no matter if Lestat's version of things is air-tight verifiable (which I suspect it will be shown to be when it comes to something like Paul's death).
Whether someone likes this brand of storytelling is very much an individual preference, I'll say that. But I very much do not see it as an easy form of storytelling or a way to give the writers easy outs either.
you know what, i have accepted the fight and will br moving in from it, like you can’t revisit something several times. so i don’t expect a third revisit,
I do. Because we did not get Lestat‘s POV yet *shrugs*

Note
That is not where the consensus of Lestat’s version being the true version comes from. Anne would send private newsletters to her fan club in the early 2000’s & in one of those newsletters she addressed the discrepancies between IWTV & TVL by saying “Louis was the side of myself that was grief and anger. He was the side of me saying things in moments of abject sorrow. Upon having clarity and making peace with my grief, I realized the Lestat side of myself was the truth and the light. I never wanted to explicitly address it, because Louis’s grief is something tethering many together. However, we all know my Lestat doesn’t lie. His version was the truth, because he had the clarity and the facilities to see things for how they are unlike my sorrowful Louis.”
But this is Anne Rice not Rolin Jones and his writing team. Rolin Jones and his staff don’t see Louis as their personal grief and anger nor do they see Lestat as their personal light and truth. Anne retconned the events of the first book due to her healing from her grief. What grief is Rolin Jones and co. healing from that will have them go back and retcon the tale that Louis relays to the audience? There are some things like Lestat’s death and the depths of Louis’s grief that will be looked into further in s2 and the DV scene of episode 5 will be revisited but it makes no narrative sense for Louis’s tale to be retconned to the extent that Anne did with the first book. Especially because this is the second interview and the first one, as Daniel pointed out, was Louis being angry with Lestat. There are still some cracks but he is more willing to open up about how Lestat made him feel in the past. He was already a “bitter ex” in the 70s as we hear on the tape and that phase is gone. Being so sure that Louis is lying about everything including his abuse is what is giving me pause here seeing as how I heard that Lestat gets worse. Even Hannah Moscovitch says that beating Louis is not outside of Lestat’s evil so what is the point and what purpose will it serve to the narrative for all of it to be back tracked?
