Does anyone else miss Games With Hank? Because I do. Here’s a little highlight reel of Hank Plays The Sims (and ends up shipping ex-presidents in the process).

Now that I’m well, I’ve made it my mission to try and do for others the same thing the Vlogbrothers did for me. :)

The Nerdfighter community has affected my life in a positive manner in that it has provided me with a safe place online where I could explore myself, engage with others, and transition from an unawesome person that thought they were awesome, to becoming a truly moral and awesome person.

Additionally, John, via his books, and Hank though his songs and joke videos, and both of them through Hankgames, helped kept me company through some of my darkest times, and allowed me to escape the world in such a way that my background cognition could take over, showing me just how badly I needed the help I ended up getting.

Furthermore, local Nerdfighters, when they heard of my difficulty, encircled me and became some of my best friends. In this way the Vlogbrothers and Nerdfighter community saved my life.

My life was changed by John and Hank. When I found the Nerdfighter community I was very ill and truly thought I was going to die.

It wasn’t the most happy place to be, and the sicker I became, the more isolated I made myself. The Vlogbrothers helped put positivity back into my life. I started to love the world again instead of hating it.

The stark difference between bitterness and enthusiasm made all the difference in my life. There are so many things in the world to be happy about instead of sad.

Now that I’m well, I’ve made it my mission to try and do for others the same thing the Vlogbrothers did for me. :)

The Nerdfighter community makes me feel welcome for once.

I am a very shy, geeky teen. Hank and John make me feel happy.

Nerdfighters are very accepting, so I never feel left out.

Even when I was a newer Nerdfighter, I still felt welcome in this community.

You know what, it’s been so long since I’ve watched Hankgames without Hank that I’d totally forgotten about Bald John Green and Other John Green :D :D

And there I was, driving when John mentioned them, and I had to pause the podcast and laugh for five whole minutes in the car like crazy! JOHN IS SUCH A DORK for creating two fictional men who are married to each other and naming them freaking “Bald John Green” and “Other John Green” !!!! :D :D :D You are a child my friend!!

Competitive gaming, Drawing, and Finding the Energy to Do Things

This is the third week of school. I skipped a class twice and not entirely by design. Our Counter-Strike team lost its first game of the season and might lose a second one soon. The air feels tight, and I feel apprehensive if only because it still is the third week of school. I went into this semester with the intention of “taking it easy,” which is evidenced by only choosing to take four classes this semester. Once again, I find myself possibly biting off more than I can chew.

It is a hankgames video, in which John Green of the Vlogbrothers addresses a viewer’s concern about specialness, self-worth, and motivation. It is a concern that I think about a lot, especially in competitive gaming. I’ve been on-and-off playing CS:GO competitively for NYU in collegiate and amateur leagues for the past four years. I assumed I was motivated by a desire to win and be the best (read: special and unique) as most people you would find in a competitive endeavor. Yet, recently I’ve considered completely quitting, and I’ve reconsidered why I originally played the game. In the video, John Green points out that the fuel to be competitive and exceptional burns brighter but also burns out faster than a stable source of fuel from a genuine desire to engage with the universe. I think I have been trying to engage the world with the first kind of motivation and have been finding myself unsure of where to go after, whenever I burn out. In actuality, CS:GO was always about enjoying the game for what it is than about being exceptional for me, and that is perhaps why it isn’t fun for me anymore.

At the same time, I expect to continue with CS:GO until we are eliminated from the leagues. It is a team game and I have made commitments to my team, and stopping before we lose would be quitting. The best way to move forward seems to be to find out what my real priorities are, what really gets me going, and follow them. Returning to drawing is the first avenue I hope to explore, and find that slow but steady workhorse drive.

always light up my day

The Vlogbrothers always light up my day, whether it's Hank telling jokes or singing songs or John talking about things I don't understand. Hearing their voices make me feel better.

When I can't sleep, I turn on a Crash Course video from John, it calms me and helps me sleep, and when I'm sad I watch Hank Plays Pikmin.

It makes me laugh and forget about why I'm sad. All in all, they changed my life for the better and I thank them everyday,
