I visited Hanford to check out the Superior Dairy Products Company when I got the idea for this little story. By the way, I recommend checking out this place if you're in Hanford CA. This place is an old school ice cream restaurant that's full of charm. Currently, it's been mainly take out since the pandemic but eventually it will be a sit down place again. This is just a snapshot of a time at this place.

STAN THE MAN!

Stanley is 7 years 9 months-old and sponsored by Michael Snider. SNAP Cats rescued Stanley from Hanford, CA. Stanley is a real sweetheart! He gets along great with the other kitties here, and could probably tolerate a cat-friendly dog. We’re not sure if Stanley will use the litter box all of the time, but he makes an effort to go there… sometimes. Since he’s been here he’s gained a bit more control of his functions. But, he's basically incontinent. Which means he's a very messy, bath-a-day kitty. But look at that face. Is a bath-a-day too much to ask?! We think not!

Ziŋtkála Núni, a.k.a. "Lost Bird"

(Indigenous Lakota, born 1890 at Pine Ridge Reservation, Wounded Knee, SD, died 1920, Hanford, CA)

"In late 1890, Leonard Colby, as commander of the Nebraska National Guard, fought at Wounded Knee in South Dakota in a massacre that killed an estimated 170 to 300 Lakota men, women and children.

Four days later, a rescue party found a Lakota baby, partially frozen but still alive, strapped to her [bullet-riddled] dead mother’s back under a covering of snow.

Without his wife’s knowledge or consent, Colby brought the baby back to Nebraska. The child became known as Ziŋtkála Núni, or Lost Bird.

The story is recounted in the 1995 book “Lost Bird of Wounded Knee” by Renee Sansom Flood and in a 1999 documentary with the same title by South Dakota Public Broadcasting.

The book alleges that Leonard Colby, a prominent attorney, sexually abused his adopted daughter and exploited her as a "mascot" for his law firm." [source]
